0:00:52 > 0:00:53TOOT-TOOT!
0:00:55 > 0:00:56Hello, there!
0:00:56 > 0:01:00Salty and I, we've got big plans for today, haven't we, girl? Eh?
0:01:00 > 0:01:03Yes, we have. We are going on a picnic.
0:01:03 > 0:01:06Yes, I do love a good picnic.
0:01:06 > 0:01:08I've packed all the food in there.
0:01:08 > 0:01:12I've got a nice blanket for you, Salty, haven't I, girl? Yes.
0:01:12 > 0:01:14All ready, aren't we? Ha-ha!
0:01:14 > 0:01:21Listen, why don't I tell you a story of a picnic that I once had, eh?
0:01:21 > 0:01:23Yeah, heh-heh!
0:01:23 > 0:01:26It all happened when I was a boy.
0:01:26 > 0:01:30In a twinkly time, long, long ago.
0:01:30 > 0:01:31Heh-heh!
0:01:31 > 0:01:36I used to run down to play on the beach as often as I could.
0:01:36 > 0:01:42Meeting up with my best friends, Little Ernie and Little Sailor Sue.
0:01:42 > 0:01:46Our mums and dads were having a picnic, and Ernie, Sue and I
0:01:46 > 0:01:50were having a picnic of our own. We were all bringing some food.
0:01:50 > 0:01:56"What have you got?" I asked Ernie. "An Apple", said Ernie. "Ah", I said.
0:01:56 > 0:01:58"Me too."
0:01:58 > 0:02:02Well, it wasn't going to be much of a picnic, was it? Just two apples?
0:02:02 > 0:02:05Maybe Sue was bringing something better?
0:02:05 > 0:02:06Where's Sue?
0:02:06 > 0:02:11We looked around for her. She was on the far side of the rockpools.
0:02:11 > 0:02:12There she is.
0:02:12 > 0:02:15She had a very large bag on her back
0:02:15 > 0:02:18which was making her walk really slowly.
0:02:18 > 0:02:21"She's going to be a while", said Ernie.
0:02:21 > 0:02:25"Let's meet her at the rockpools!" I said. So we dashed over.
0:02:27 > 0:02:32When we got there, we gazed deep down in the glittery waters
0:02:32 > 0:02:39and there a magical world appeared before our eyes.
0:02:39 > 0:02:41BUBBLE-BUBBLE
0:02:43 > 0:02:48One afternoon, Bertrum the Butterfish was fast asleep
0:02:48 > 0:02:51in his little home in the rocky ridge.
0:02:51 > 0:02:56All day he had been moving pebbles with his big clearing-up trolley.
0:02:56 > 0:03:01He was dreaming a very happy dream,
0:03:01 > 0:03:03when suddenly he heard singing.
0:03:03 > 0:03:06# Wake up! Wake up!
0:03:06 > 0:03:10# Get up and get out! #
0:03:10 > 0:03:14Bertrum was so surprised that he almost fell out of bed.
0:03:14 > 0:03:17- Where was that singing coming from? Any ideas, Salty?- Ruff!
0:03:17 > 0:03:21Anyway, he dashed over to his doorway and there, outside,
0:03:21 > 0:03:24was Sidney the Snail.
0:03:24 > 0:03:26"Afternoon!" said Sidney.
0:03:26 > 0:03:31"Do you know what time it is?" demanded Bertrum.
0:03:31 > 0:03:33Well, Sidney didn't know.
0:03:33 > 0:03:35Snails don't wear watches.
0:03:35 > 0:03:40"It's nap time, that's what it is!" said Bertrum, crossly.
0:03:40 > 0:03:45"I thought you might like a song," said Sidney, a little surprised.
0:03:45 > 0:03:47"No!" said Bertrum.
0:03:47 > 0:03:51And he would have slammed his door, but he didn't have a door.
0:03:51 > 0:03:54So he just huffed his way back to bed.
0:03:55 > 0:03:58Buster the Crab clicked and clacked past.
0:03:58 > 0:04:03"Bertrum doesn't like my singing," said Sidney to Buster.
0:04:03 > 0:04:08"Oh, he probably doesn't like you singing on your own," said Buster.
0:04:08 > 0:04:14"You need a trio, three voices singing together, he'll like that."
0:04:14 > 0:04:16And he bustled off.
0:04:16 > 0:04:21Meanwhile, Bertrum had settled back into his bed, when, suddenly...
0:04:21 > 0:04:23# Wake up! Wa-a-ake up!
0:04:23 > 0:04:25# Get up and get out! #
0:04:25 > 0:04:29It was that song again!
0:04:29 > 0:04:33- And even louder. Guess who, Salty?- Ruff!
0:04:33 > 0:04:35Hee-hee, yes.
0:04:35 > 0:04:41Bertrum rushed outside and saw three snails waiting there.
0:04:41 > 0:04:43One of them was Sidney.
0:04:43 > 0:04:50"I thought a trio might be a good idea," said Sidney, hopefully.
0:04:50 > 0:04:54"A trio is NOT a good idea!" shouted Bertrum.
0:04:54 > 0:04:58"I don't want a trio singing outside my door!"
0:04:58 > 0:05:01And he stomped back inside.
0:05:01 > 0:05:05"He doesn't have a door!" said one of the snails.
0:05:05 > 0:05:09"Doesn't he like our song?" said the other snail.
0:05:09 > 0:05:12Sidney thought for a moment.
0:05:12 > 0:05:16"No, but I've had an idea."
0:05:17 > 0:05:23Back inside his home, Bertrum was snuggled down deep in his bed,
0:05:23 > 0:05:27when suddenly he heard a muffled sound.
0:05:28 > 0:05:30# Wake up, wa-a-ake up!
0:05:30 > 0:05:33# Get up and get out! #
0:05:33 > 0:05:37I think it might be the snails again, Salty! Yes! Anyway,
0:05:37 > 0:05:41he dashed outside, and what a sight he saw!
0:05:41 > 0:05:44It was a whole choir of snails.
0:05:44 > 0:05:47There were snails everywhere.
0:05:47 > 0:05:50And they were all singing together.
0:05:50 > 0:05:52"Hello!" smiled Sidney.
0:05:52 > 0:05:57"I thought you might prefer a snail choir singing."
0:05:57 > 0:06:01"No!" squawked Bertrum.
0:06:01 > 0:06:06"I do not! I don't like you singing on your own, in a trio
0:06:06 > 0:06:11"or in a snail choir! Now go away!"
0:06:11 > 0:06:13And he stomped back off.
0:06:13 > 0:06:18Sidney turned to his mighty choir of snails.
0:06:18 > 0:06:21"Well, lads," he said, sadly,
0:06:21 > 0:06:25"I think we need to move on."
0:06:25 > 0:06:30"Why don't we sing a song while we're moving?" piped up one of the snails.
0:06:30 > 0:06:34So the cheery band of snails started to sing as they set off.
0:06:36 > 0:06:40Back inside, Bertrum heard them singing.
0:06:40 > 0:06:41He waited.
0:06:41 > 0:06:43And he waited.
0:06:43 > 0:06:44SINGING CONTINUES
0:06:44 > 0:06:47But the singing went on and on.
0:06:47 > 0:06:49This was starting to make him very cross indeed.
0:06:49 > 0:06:55He dashed outside again and there was the snail choir.
0:06:55 > 0:06:57It hadn't moved at all!
0:06:57 > 0:07:01"You're still here and still singing!" he roared.
0:07:01 > 0:07:03"I thought you were going?"
0:07:03 > 0:07:06"We are!" replied Sidney.
0:07:06 > 0:07:13"But we are snails. It takes us a very, very, very long time to go.
0:07:13 > 0:07:17"We're not the fastest creatures in the rockpool,
0:07:17 > 0:07:21"and we have to sing to get ourselves moving.
0:07:21 > 0:07:24"Well, you got here quickly enough," said Bertrum.
0:07:24 > 0:07:29"That's because we came by taxi," said Sidney.
0:07:29 > 0:07:34"But taxis are expensive, so we are leaving under our own steam,
0:07:34 > 0:07:39"at our own pace. Slow."
0:07:39 > 0:07:41Bertrum sighed.
0:07:41 > 0:07:48He wasn't going to get any sleep at this rate. And then he had an idea.
0:07:48 > 0:07:53If the snails weren't going to move, HE would.
0:07:53 > 0:07:56Moments later, the snails watched, amazed,
0:07:56 > 0:08:00as all Bertrum's things started to fly out of his doorway.
0:08:00 > 0:08:05His wind-up gramophone, his favourite socks, his bedside table
0:08:05 > 0:08:11and, finally, his bed. They all landed in a heap outside his home.
0:08:11 > 0:08:15And then he fetched his big clearing-up trolley.
0:08:15 > 0:08:18He piled all his possessions onto the trolley
0:08:18 > 0:08:22and then, with a heave, he set off for the far side of the rockpool.
0:08:22 > 0:08:26"I'm moving house!" he announced.
0:08:26 > 0:08:29"Now try and wake me!"
0:08:29 > 0:08:32Well, Buster heard the commotion
0:08:32 > 0:08:35and he clicked and clacked back over.
0:08:35 > 0:08:38"What did he say?" asked Buster.
0:08:38 > 0:08:44"He said, 'Now try and wake me'," said Sidney.
0:08:44 > 0:08:46"Well," said Buster,
0:08:46 > 0:08:49"perhaps you should."
0:08:49 > 0:08:52Meanwhile, on the far side of the rockpool,
0:08:52 > 0:08:57Bertrum had rebuilt his little bedroom under a shady piece of coral.
0:08:57 > 0:09:00He was already tucked back up in his bed.
0:09:00 > 0:09:04"You are brilliant, Bertrum!" he said to himself.
0:09:04 > 0:09:09"Those snails are too slow to get all the way over here.
0:09:09 > 0:09:12"Now you can sleep in peace! Ooh!"
0:09:12 > 0:09:17And he closed his eyes and rested his weary head.
0:09:17 > 0:09:19And he heard...
0:09:19 > 0:09:20singing.
0:09:20 > 0:09:28Snails singing, a whole choir of snails, singing.
0:09:28 > 0:09:31He dashed out from under his little piece of coral,
0:09:31 > 0:09:34and there he saw his clearing-up trolley,
0:09:34 > 0:09:39piled high with snails, snails, snails everywhere!
0:09:39 > 0:09:42They were all singing.
0:09:42 > 0:09:45Sidney sat on the very top of the pile of snails.
0:09:45 > 0:09:48"Hello, Bertrum!" he smiled.
0:09:48 > 0:09:51"You said, 'Now try and wake me!'
0:09:51 > 0:09:57"So, Buster pulled us over on your big trolley to wake you.
0:09:57 > 0:10:00"Ahh! Surprise!"
0:10:00 > 0:10:04Bertrum was surprised, very surprised.
0:10:04 > 0:10:08He was about to shout the loudest, crossest shout
0:10:08 > 0:10:11ever heard in the rockpool, ever.
0:10:11 > 0:10:15When Buster clicked and clacked over to him.
0:10:15 > 0:10:20"Have you ever thought of singing with the choir?"
0:10:20 > 0:10:23Bertrum looked at him in surprise.
0:10:23 > 0:10:25"Oh, yes!" said Sidney.
0:10:25 > 0:10:29"I'm sure you have a lovely voice."
0:10:29 > 0:10:31There was silence.
0:10:31 > 0:10:34The snails all looked at Bertrum
0:10:34 > 0:10:37and blinked, hopefully.
0:10:37 > 0:10:42"Well," said Bertrum, "I have been told that my singing voice
0:10:42 > 0:10:44"is rather lovely."
0:10:45 > 0:10:51He looked at the faces of the little snails who just wanted to sing.
0:10:51 > 0:10:55And he realised that he'd been wrong all along.
0:10:55 > 0:11:00"You know, I don't want to stop any of you singing," he announced.
0:11:00 > 0:11:05"In fact, let's all sing together!"
0:11:05 > 0:11:09Sidney and the snails let out a great cheer,
0:11:09 > 0:11:12and Buster clicked and clacked happily.
0:11:12 > 0:11:16And so, Bertrum joined the snail choir
0:11:16 > 0:11:22and they sang and they sang and they sang for the rest of the day.
0:11:22 > 0:11:24# Get up and get out! #
0:11:24 > 0:11:27Ernie and I looked up from the rockpool
0:11:27 > 0:11:29and there was Sue.
0:11:29 > 0:11:32She'd arrived at last with her big, heavy bag,
0:11:32 > 0:11:34still on her back.
0:11:34 > 0:11:39"You look just like a snail with an enormous shell!" laughed Ernie.
0:11:39 > 0:11:43Sue heaved the big bag off her back and she smiled.
0:11:43 > 0:11:47"Well, you two might laugh at me for looking like a snail,
0:11:47 > 0:11:51"but I think you'll like what I've got in here!"
0:11:51 > 0:11:54We both looked at each other.
0:11:54 > 0:11:59What was inside the bag? "A proper picnic," laughed Sue.
0:11:59 > 0:12:03So we helped to carry the bag all the way back to our mums and dads,
0:12:03 > 0:12:08and do you know what was inside that snail-shell bag of hers?
0:12:08 > 0:12:12Cakes and pies and fruit and biscuits.
0:12:12 > 0:12:15It was a picnic fit for kings.
0:12:15 > 0:12:17"Thank you, Sue!"
0:12:17 > 0:12:21"We'll never make fun of snails again!" said Ernie.
0:12:22 > 0:12:25Well, after our picnic we played and played
0:12:25 > 0:12:28until it was time for us to go home.
0:12:28 > 0:12:33And the tide came in and covered the rockpool
0:12:33 > 0:12:36like a great seaweedy blanket.
0:12:46 > 0:12:51And you know what? We still love going on picnics, don't we, Salty?
0:12:51 > 0:12:53Ha-ha!
0:12:53 > 0:12:57This is a picnic surprise for Big Ernie,
0:12:57 > 0:12:59I'm sure he's going to love it. HE WHISTLES
0:13:03 > 0:13:07So why don't you join us for some more Rockpool Tales next time?
0:13:07 > 0:13:09All right? Heh-heh.
0:13:09 > 0:13:11Goodbye! Come on, girl!
