0:00:02 > 0:00:03Go on, Salty.
0:00:09 > 0:00:14# Come with me, we're off to the sea to where I used to play
0:00:14 > 0:00:19# Looking back when I was a boy and the fun we had each day
0:00:19 > 0:00:23# Over the cobbles and through the streets, playing in the sun
0:00:23 > 0:00:28# Friends to meet with games and treats, adventures just begun
0:00:28 > 0:00:33# Stories from a magical world washed in by the sea
0:00:33 > 0:00:37# Meet the rock pool creatures there, it's amazing what you see
0:00:38 > 0:00:42# Looking back when I was a boy
0:00:42 > 0:00:45# Shrimps and starfish Crabs and snails
0:00:45 > 0:00:47# In twinkly Rockpool Tales
0:00:47 > 0:00:49OLD JACK LAUGHS
0:00:49 > 0:00:52# Those lovely Rockpool Tales. #
0:00:55 > 0:00:59Oh, hello.
0:00:59 > 0:01:02Salty and I, we've just been having a bit of a tidy up
0:01:02 > 0:01:03on the Rainbow today.
0:01:03 > 0:01:04Look at it.
0:01:04 > 0:01:07Not too keen on tidying up, are you, Salty?
0:01:07 > 0:01:09She makes most of the mess anyway.
0:01:11 > 0:01:15Oh, would you believe that?
0:01:16 > 0:01:20Look at this. Look at this.
0:01:22 > 0:01:26This is my beautiful red kite.
0:01:27 > 0:01:31Me and my dad made this together when I was a boy.
0:01:31 > 0:01:32Yeah.
0:01:32 > 0:01:36And we'd take it down to the beach every time it was windy,
0:01:36 > 0:01:40which happens quite a lot in Staithes, doesn't it, Salty?
0:01:40 > 0:01:42And we'd fly it.
0:01:42 > 0:01:43Do you know what?
0:01:43 > 0:01:47Finding this, it reminds me of a story.
0:01:48 > 0:01:52It's a swoopy, divey, glidey sort of a story.
0:01:53 > 0:01:57And it all happened when I was a boy
0:01:57 > 0:02:00in a twinkly time long, long ago.
0:02:02 > 0:02:08You know, I used to run down to play on the beach as often as I could.
0:02:08 > 0:02:11Meeting up with my best friends,
0:02:11 > 0:02:14Little Ernie and Little Sailor Sue.
0:02:16 > 0:02:19It was particularly windy on the beach that day
0:02:19 > 0:02:22and the kite was flying really well.
0:02:22 > 0:02:26Ernie asked if he could try flying the kite himself
0:02:26 > 0:02:29so I passed him the strings and said we could hold it together.
0:02:29 > 0:02:33But Ernie, he wanted to fly the kite on his own.
0:02:33 > 0:02:37"Don't worry, Jack," he said, and he grabbed the strings.
0:02:37 > 0:02:43The kite swooped lower and lower until, with a sudden whoosh,
0:02:43 > 0:02:45it came down.
0:02:45 > 0:02:48Crunch. Oh, dear. Huh.
0:02:48 > 0:02:52"We'd better go and see if it's all right," suggested Sue.
0:02:52 > 0:02:56We followed the strings all the way across the beach
0:02:56 > 0:02:58to where the kite had crashed
0:02:58 > 0:03:02and we saw the tail had fallen into a rock pool nearby.
0:03:02 > 0:03:06And as we gazed deep down into the glittery waters,
0:03:06 > 0:03:10a magical world appeared before our eyes.
0:03:15 > 0:03:20One windy day, Sally the Starfish and Belinda the Blenny
0:03:20 > 0:03:26were playing together in the seaweed when they heard a long, snaily sigh.
0:03:26 > 0:03:28SNAIL SIGHS
0:03:28 > 0:03:31It came from Sidney the Snail.
0:03:31 > 0:03:34He was sitting on his favourite rock
0:03:34 > 0:03:37gazing up through the water at the sky above.
0:03:37 > 0:03:40"Hi, Sidney," said Sally.
0:03:40 > 0:03:42"What are you looking at?"
0:03:42 > 0:03:44Sidney sighed again.
0:03:44 > 0:03:46"Look," he said.
0:03:46 > 0:03:52They all looked up and there, high above them, flew a beautiful kite.
0:03:52 > 0:03:55"I've been watching that big red bird
0:03:55 > 0:04:00"fly in the sky all morning," he explained.
0:04:00 > 0:04:04"So, why the big sigh?" asked Belinda.
0:04:04 > 0:04:05Sidney sniffed.
0:04:05 > 0:04:10"Because I would really love to fly in the sky, too."
0:04:10 > 0:04:13"But you're a snail," said Sally.
0:04:13 > 0:04:16"I know," replied Sidney.
0:04:16 > 0:04:20"And that means I'm stuck down here on this rock."
0:04:20 > 0:04:24"Maybe not," said Sally, with a big grin,
0:04:24 > 0:04:26and she dashed off.
0:04:26 > 0:04:32Well, what she brought back would've made your whiskers whiffle, Salty.
0:04:32 > 0:04:36Buster the Crab, Andrew the Anemone and Sheena the Shrimp
0:04:36 > 0:04:41were all helping Sally to push a strange-looking machine.
0:04:41 > 0:04:46Sidney slid slowly over to take a closer look.
0:04:46 > 0:04:48"What is it?" he asked.
0:04:48 > 0:04:52"It's a rock pool rocket," Sally proudly announced.
0:04:52 > 0:04:54"You get in the seat at that end.
0:04:54 > 0:04:57"I pull on the stretchy seaweed at this end
0:04:57 > 0:05:00"and, whoosh, you rocket into the sky."
0:05:00 > 0:05:03Sidney's eyes lit up.
0:05:03 > 0:05:05He was going to fly.
0:05:06 > 0:05:10He slithered into the seat of the rock pool rocket,
0:05:10 > 0:05:12shrinking back in his shell for safety
0:05:12 > 0:05:16until just his eyes were peeping out.
0:05:16 > 0:05:19Then Sally pulled back on the stretchy seaweed.
0:05:20 > 0:05:23And Andrew started the countdown.
0:05:23 > 0:05:28"Five, four, three, two, one," he shouted.
0:05:28 > 0:05:31Sally let go.
0:05:31 > 0:05:35"Twang!" went the seaweed as it snapped in two.
0:05:35 > 0:05:39"Boing!" went Sidney as he whooshed through the water.
0:05:39 > 0:05:41"Whee!" he cried.
0:05:41 > 0:05:43Oh... But, oh, dear.
0:05:43 > 0:05:48Oh, dear. Instead of going upwards towards the sky,
0:05:48 > 0:05:51the broken seaweed sent Sidney
0:05:51 > 0:05:54whizzing across the sandy bed of the rock pool.
0:05:54 > 0:05:57With an "ooh" and an "ouch" and an "o-o-o-ooh",
0:05:57 > 0:06:00he bounced over and over like a pebble
0:06:00 > 0:06:05until he landed with a squishy bump in a soft clump of seagrass.
0:06:05 > 0:06:08"Are you all right, Sidney?" asked Belinda
0:06:08 > 0:06:10with a worried look at the others.
0:06:10 > 0:06:13Sidney blinked and smiled.
0:06:13 > 0:06:16"Yes, I am.
0:06:16 > 0:06:18"Can we try that again?"
0:06:18 > 0:06:23Sally shook her head and held up the snapped seaweed.
0:06:23 > 0:06:27"I'm afraid we can't. The rock pool rocket is broken."
0:06:27 > 0:06:30"Oh, well," said Sidney.
0:06:30 > 0:06:34"I suppose snails are just not supposed to fly.
0:06:34 > 0:06:37- "Ho-ho-ho..." - HE SIGHS
0:06:37 > 0:06:41And he sighed another big snaily sigh.
0:06:41 > 0:06:45And then Buster clicked and clacked over.
0:06:45 > 0:06:48He had an idea.
0:06:48 > 0:06:52"What if we all balance on top of each other like a tower
0:06:52 > 0:06:54"with Sidney at the top?
0:06:54 > 0:06:57"You'll be so high, you'll feel like you're flying."
0:06:57 > 0:07:01So Andrew balanced on Buster, then it was Belinda's turn,
0:07:01 > 0:07:06and then Sheena and then Sally, and right on top of the tower
0:07:06 > 0:07:07was a thrilled Sidney.
0:07:09 > 0:07:13Sidney's head popped out of the water's surface.
0:07:13 > 0:07:16He could feel the sea breeze on his face.
0:07:16 > 0:07:19"I'm almost flying," he chuckled
0:07:19 > 0:07:23and he tried to stretch further towards the sky.
0:07:23 > 0:07:27But Sidney's stretching started to make the tower wobble.
0:07:27 > 0:07:31"Stay still, Sidney," called Buster from the bottom,
0:07:31 > 0:07:33but it was too late.
0:07:33 > 0:07:36The tower wobbled and wibbled one way and then the other
0:07:36 > 0:07:40until, crash, down it came.
0:07:41 > 0:07:45Well, everyone rushed over to where Sidney had landed
0:07:45 > 0:07:47to check that he was all right.
0:07:47 > 0:07:50"I'm sorry we couldn't make you fly," said Buster.
0:07:50 > 0:07:53"Oh, that's all right, Buster," sighed Sidney.
0:07:53 > 0:07:58"I suppose snails are just not meant to leave the ground."
0:07:58 > 0:08:03And then a very strange thing happened.
0:08:03 > 0:08:07Sidney the snail started to leave the ground.
0:08:09 > 0:08:12He blinked a few blinks as he rose up
0:08:12 > 0:08:15through the water of the rock pool.
0:08:15 > 0:08:19The others all gazed at him in surprise.
0:08:19 > 0:08:23Sidney felt a tugging on his tail and there he saw wrapped around it
0:08:23 > 0:08:29was a long piece of red seaweed that was pulling him up.
0:08:29 > 0:08:33He must've got tangled in it when he fell from the tower.
0:08:33 > 0:08:37"That's funny-looking seaweed," said Sheena.
0:08:37 > 0:08:41Of course, you know what Sidney was tangled in, don't you?
0:08:41 > 0:08:42SALTY BARKS
0:08:42 > 0:08:44That's right, Salty.
0:08:44 > 0:08:46It wasn't seaweed.
0:08:46 > 0:08:49It was tail of the kite.
0:08:49 > 0:08:53"Whoo!" called Sidney as he was pulled higher.
0:08:53 > 0:08:57"Quick, everyone!" shouted Buster. "Grab him."
0:08:57 > 0:09:01One by one, the friends grabbed hold of the kite tail
0:09:01 > 0:09:02as it whizzed past them.
0:09:02 > 0:09:07They tried to pull it back down, but it was too strong.
0:09:07 > 0:09:12With an enormous plip, it pulled them all out of the water.
0:09:12 > 0:09:16Sidney and his little friends then shot past a snoozing Reginald
0:09:16 > 0:09:18with a great whoosh.
0:09:19 > 0:09:22"Hi, Reginald," shouted Sidney.
0:09:22 > 0:09:27"Flying snails?" yawned Reginald. "Whatever next?"
0:09:29 > 0:09:30Well, in no time at all,
0:09:30 > 0:09:34Sidney and his friends found themselves high up in the sky.
0:09:34 > 0:09:37"Wow! Look!" laughed Sidney.
0:09:37 > 0:09:41"I'm tangled in the tail of the big red bird.
0:09:41 > 0:09:43"Whee-whee-whee-whee!
0:09:43 > 0:09:46"Look at the view. Whoo!"
0:09:46 > 0:09:51Well, the kite swooped and dived this way and that.
0:09:51 > 0:09:56Sidney was having great fun, but his friends couldn't hold on forever.
0:09:56 > 0:10:00"We need to get back home," called Sally.
0:10:00 > 0:10:05So, Sheena the Shrimp nibbled away at the kite's tail
0:10:05 > 0:10:08until Sidney was untangled.
0:10:08 > 0:10:14"The next time we swoop over the rock pool, let go," Buster shouted.
0:10:15 > 0:10:22The kite did one last dive, it glided low over the rock pool,
0:10:22 > 0:10:25and with a splash, splash, splosh,
0:10:25 > 0:10:31the rock poolers let go and plopped back down into the water.
0:10:31 > 0:10:34Sidney was the last to drop.
0:10:34 > 0:10:38He took a final look at the amazing view
0:10:38 > 0:10:43before floating gently down to the rock pool floor,
0:10:43 > 0:10:48where he landed safe on his favourite rock.
0:10:48 > 0:10:51Everyone crowded round Sidney.
0:10:51 > 0:10:55"What an adventure," laughed Andrew as he bounced around.
0:10:55 > 0:10:58"Let's fly again," shouted Sheena.
0:10:58 > 0:11:00But Sidney, he said nothing.
0:11:00 > 0:11:02He just blinked.
0:11:02 > 0:11:06"Would you like to fly again?" Sally asked him.
0:11:06 > 0:11:10Sidney shook his head and smiled.
0:11:10 > 0:11:15"You know," he said, "it was fabulous to fly.
0:11:15 > 0:11:17"I'll never forget it, but...
0:11:17 > 0:11:23"I'm a snail and snails aren't really supposed to fly.
0:11:23 > 0:11:27"Anyway, I like it in the rock pool with all my friends around
0:11:27 > 0:11:30"watching the seaweed swish
0:11:30 > 0:11:35"while I'm sitting here on my favourite rock."
0:11:36 > 0:11:40He gave one last look up at the sky
0:11:40 > 0:11:44and then carried on playing with his friends
0:11:44 > 0:11:47- for the rest of the day. - HE CHUCKLES
0:11:47 > 0:11:49We left the rock pool
0:11:49 > 0:11:54carrying the long wet tail of the kite in a big messy bundle.
0:11:54 > 0:11:56We got the kite back onto the beach
0:11:56 > 0:11:59and Ernie was very keen to fly it again.
0:11:59 > 0:12:02He picked up the long strings while Sue and I
0:12:02 > 0:12:07held the kite high before letting it fly up into the air.
0:12:07 > 0:12:10The tail of the kite was really wet
0:12:10 > 0:12:14and, as the kite flew, drops of water from the tail fell down.
0:12:14 > 0:12:16It was just like rain.
0:12:16 > 0:12:18"We will need to keep the kite flying
0:12:18 > 0:12:21"until the tails are dry," said Sue.
0:12:21 > 0:12:22And that's just what we did.
0:12:22 > 0:12:29Flying and playing all afternoon until it was time for us to go home,
0:12:29 > 0:12:31when the tide started to come in
0:12:31 > 0:12:34and covered the rock pool
0:12:34 > 0:12:36like a great seaweedy blanket.
0:12:47 > 0:12:51Ha-ha! I have some lovely memories of flying this kite, I do.
0:12:51 > 0:12:53It's a bit windy today.
0:12:53 > 0:12:57You fancy going for a fly, do you, Salty, eh?
0:12:57 > 0:13:02So why don't you join us for some more Rockpool Tales next time?
0:13:02 > 0:13:05Bye-bye. Come on.
