0:04:15 > 0:04:20There she is. The Rainbow. What have you got for us today, my dear?
0:04:24 > 0:04:26Come on, Salty.
0:04:38 > 0:04:41On you go. Good girl. There, now.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51There we are. That's the one, yes.
0:04:53 > 0:04:54Do you know,
0:04:54 > 0:04:59Ernie did look funny with that tie of his dangling in his tea!
0:04:59 > 0:05:02I mean, they are not the easiest things to wear.
0:05:02 > 0:05:06I had to wear a fancy tie once. A bowtie, it was.
0:05:06 > 0:05:09It was very smart indeed. Do you remember?
0:05:09 > 0:05:11Yes.
0:05:11 > 0:05:14Let me get comfortable and I'll tell you the story.
0:05:17 > 0:05:22Once upon a twinkly time, The Rainbow set off from Staithes,
0:05:22 > 0:05:27waved goodbye to Whitby and disappeared over the horizon.
0:05:27 > 0:05:31Salty and I, we were waiting for Pearl, our favourite mermaid,
0:05:31 > 0:05:33to escort us to the Barnacle Ball.
0:05:33 > 0:05:35I was wearing a smart bowtie
0:05:35 > 0:05:40and Salty was wearing her red scarf and a silky, pink ribbon.
0:05:40 > 0:05:42She looked ever so pretty.
0:05:42 > 0:05:44As we sailed along, we had a little singsong.
0:05:44 > 0:05:47# Just salty dog and me
0:05:47 > 0:05:49# Upon the briny sea
0:05:49 > 0:05:52# The sun is up And the wind is fair
0:05:52 > 0:05:56# We've brushed our fur And we've combed our hair
0:05:56 > 0:06:00# We've dressed ourselves smartly To go to a party
0:06:00 > 0:06:02# Just salty dog and me. #
0:06:03 > 0:06:10"Oh, Salty, my girl," I said, "you are a very fine looking hound."
0:06:10 > 0:06:13"I know I am," she whined. "But I've got the scarf.
0:06:13 > 0:06:18"Why do I have to wear a ribbon too? I'm not a ribbon sort of dog."
0:06:18 > 0:06:23Just then, we heard three perfect notes drifting on the wind.
0:06:23 > 0:06:26"That sounds like Pearl," yapped Salty.
0:06:26 > 0:06:30And sure enough, Pearl popped up from the waves.
0:06:30 > 0:06:35"Sorry I'm late. I couldn't decide what to wear," she chimed.
0:06:35 > 0:06:38"In the end, I chose my best necklace."
0:06:38 > 0:06:42Pearl looked beautiful in her necklace made from little pearls
0:06:42 > 0:06:45and Salty and I had a gift for her,
0:06:45 > 0:06:48which was sure to make her the belle of the ball.
0:06:48 > 0:06:53She opened it eagerly. "Pearl earrings," she said with delight.
0:06:53 > 0:06:58"Oh, thank you. They're lovely." And she put them on straight away.
0:06:58 > 0:07:02"Right," I said, "let's be off to the ball."
0:07:02 > 0:07:05And before we could say "bobbly barnacles",
0:07:05 > 0:07:07we were strolling along the sea bed.
0:07:08 > 0:07:11The Barnacle Ball was taking place
0:07:11 > 0:07:15on board a splendiferous sunken galleon.
0:07:15 > 0:07:20"Follow me," said Pearl. "The sunken ballroom is this way."
0:07:20 > 0:07:24Tangly seaweed push-up through the floors
0:07:24 > 0:07:26and dangled in the doorways.
0:07:26 > 0:07:30We were just trying to wind our way through it
0:07:30 > 0:07:33when someone pushed past Pearl quite rudely.
0:07:33 > 0:07:36"I must say, I'm extremely disappointed, Harold,"
0:07:36 > 0:07:39said a cross sounding fish.
0:07:39 > 0:07:43It was Mrs Cod, who was closely followed by her husband, Mr Cod.
0:07:43 > 0:07:48Mrs Cod could not find an outfit to wear to the ball,
0:07:48 > 0:07:50so she was in a panic.
0:07:50 > 0:07:53"I have been looking everywhere, Penelope, dear,"
0:07:53 > 0:07:55Mr Cod told his wife.
0:07:55 > 0:07:58"But because you are such a perfect Cod,
0:07:58 > 0:08:02"it is hard to find an outfit that is good enough for you."
0:08:02 > 0:08:06"But the ball is about to begin," said Mrs Cod.
0:08:06 > 0:08:12"I must, must, must get a move on." "Yes, dear," said Mr Cod.
0:08:12 > 0:08:15And then the Cods pushed past us again,
0:08:15 > 0:08:18causing Pearl to whirl around
0:08:18 > 0:08:22until her lovely long hair tangled in the seaweed.
0:08:22 > 0:08:28She tried to untangle it and one of her earrings came loose.
0:08:28 > 0:08:31Downwards it drifted and before we could catch it,
0:08:31 > 0:08:35it slipped through a crack in the wooden floor.
0:08:35 > 0:08:39"Don't worry, Pearl. We'll get it out in no time," I said.
0:08:39 > 0:08:42But the crack was too small and my hand wouldn't fit.
0:08:42 > 0:08:45Even Salty's paw was too big.
0:08:45 > 0:08:48"What am I going to do," cried Pearl.
0:08:48 > 0:08:52A shark swam by and offered to help.
0:08:52 > 0:08:55"Tell you what," it said, "I'll bash in the crack with my head.
0:08:55 > 0:08:57"That will make it wider."
0:08:57 > 0:09:02Well, it biffed and it boffed and it bashed quite a lot,
0:09:02 > 0:09:05but it couldn't make the crack any bigger
0:09:05 > 0:09:08and it ended up with a lumpy bump on its head.
0:09:08 > 0:09:10"Ouch," said the shark.
0:09:10 > 0:09:17Next, a sawfish swam by with a snout full of teeth and offered to help.
0:09:17 > 0:09:21"I'll use my saw because that's what it's for," it said.
0:09:21 > 0:09:26And it gnashed and it gnawed and it chipped and it sawed,
0:09:26 > 0:09:29but it couldn't make the crack any bigger.
0:09:29 > 0:09:33"I think I've lost a tooth," it moaned.
0:09:33 > 0:09:39"Oh dear," said Pearl, "I think my pearl earring has gone for ever.
0:09:39 > 0:09:43"Now then, Pearl," I said, "don't upset yourself.
0:09:43 > 0:09:47"I've heard that it's quite the thing nowadays to wear one earring.
0:09:47 > 0:09:50"Kiki Cutlass the pirate, she does it all the time.
0:09:50 > 0:09:53"So let's just go to the ball and forget about it."
0:09:53 > 0:09:59I could see that Pearl was a little sad but we headed for the ballroom.
0:09:59 > 0:10:04The dancing had just begun and crowds of colourful sea creatures
0:10:04 > 0:10:08shimmered to the wonderful sounds of the Galleon band.
0:10:09 > 0:10:12It was such a marvellous thing to see.
0:10:12 > 0:10:15All those glittering tails and fins.
0:10:15 > 0:10:19Salty couldn't wait to join in.
0:10:19 > 0:10:24Salty is a rather fabulous dancer in her spare time, aren't you, my girl?
0:10:24 > 0:10:27Yes.
0:10:27 > 0:10:30But as she was dancing, she kept trying to shake her ribbon off
0:10:30 > 0:10:33because it felt very uncomfortable.
0:10:33 > 0:10:36She's not really a ribbon sort of dog.
0:10:36 > 0:10:39So there we were, waltzing and weaving
0:10:39 > 0:10:43and scratching with the dancers at the Barnacle Ball
0:10:43 > 0:10:49when suddenly, Mrs Cod swished past with her husband and guess what.
0:10:49 > 0:10:55She had found something to wear and it was dangling from her fin.
0:10:55 > 0:10:59"Look," cried Pearl. "That's my pearl earring!"
0:10:59 > 0:11:03"Your pearl earring?" Mrs Cod replied.
0:11:03 > 0:11:06"Indeed, it is not. Tell her Harold."
0:11:06 > 0:11:08"Well," said Harold, about to start.
0:11:08 > 0:11:11"My husband gave it to me just a moment ago,"
0:11:11 > 0:11:13interrupted Mrs Cod, "didn't you?"
0:11:13 > 0:11:15"Yes, dear," said Mr Cod.
0:11:15 > 0:11:19"I found it on my way here," he added proudly.
0:11:19 > 0:11:21"Isn't it lovely?"
0:11:21 > 0:11:24We all looked flabbergasted.
0:11:24 > 0:11:29"Pity it isn't pink though," Mr Cod continued.
0:11:29 > 0:11:32And he looked keenly at Salty's ribbon.
0:11:32 > 0:11:35"Pink is Penelope's favourite colour."
0:11:35 > 0:11:39And then, Salty's whiskers whiffled.
0:11:39 > 0:11:42She was having one of her bright ideas.
0:11:42 > 0:11:48She gently pulled off her ribbon and proudly offered it to Mrs Cod.
0:11:48 > 0:11:53"I think she wants to swap her ribbon for the earring," I said.
0:11:53 > 0:11:57She isn't really a ribbon sort of dog.
0:11:57 > 0:12:01Mrs Cod, she was overjoyed at this idea
0:12:01 > 0:12:04and the pink ribbon really suited her.
0:12:04 > 0:12:09"I'm not really an earring wearing sort of dog either," said Salty.
0:12:09 > 0:12:12And she gave the year into Pearl,
0:12:12 > 0:12:17which made her the happiest mermaid at the Barnacle Ball.
0:12:17 > 0:12:20And probably the pearliest!
0:12:21 > 0:12:23So we danced and we danced all night
0:12:23 > 0:12:29until the whole Galleon was full of happy, dancy bubbles.
0:12:29 > 0:12:33Then, when Salty's paws got hot and needed a rest,
0:12:33 > 0:12:36we jumped back on board The Rainbow
0:12:36 > 0:12:40and set our course for Staithes and home.
0:12:40 > 0:12:46Oh, it was a lovely evening though. She does like dancing.
0:12:53 > 0:12:55You liked that story, didn't you, Salty?
0:12:55 > 0:12:57Jack! Salty! Over here.
0:12:57 > 0:13:01Ernie looks happy, doesn't he? Come on.
0:13:01 > 0:13:05Hello, everybody. Right, Ernie, I'm ready to take your photograph.
0:13:05 > 0:13:09I hope you've got that tie under control.
0:13:09 > 0:13:11I'm sorry, Miss P-H, but I can't wear this tie.
0:13:11 > 0:13:14I was getting myself into a right messy muddle with it.
0:13:14 > 0:13:17- What?- Oh, oh!
0:13:17 > 0:13:22But what about my scrapbook? You won't look smart for my photo.
0:13:22 > 0:13:24Of course I will. I'm still wearing a tie.
0:13:24 > 0:13:28Only this tie won't get caught in my fish crates!
0:13:30 > 0:13:36- Emily made it for me. She's a star! - Isn't that clever? And smart.
0:13:36 > 0:13:40- I love it.- It's very funny. It's very you.
0:13:40 > 0:13:43And one with you too, Jack.
0:13:43 > 0:13:46Smashing!
0:13:46 > 0:13:50You know what, I'm going to get Emily to make me a T-shirt
0:13:50 > 0:13:52with a bowtie on the front. How about that?
0:13:52 > 0:13:56Come on, Salty. Me with a bowtie stuck on a T-shirt!
