0:03:11 > 0:03:14I've got to shut up shop until the power comes back on.

0:03:14 > 0:03:18Yeah, well, wouldn't a little bit of Shelly magic help?

0:03:18 > 0:03:21I don't know what you're talking about, Jack.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24JACK CHUCKLES First no sandwiches and now no cake!

0:03:33 > 0:03:38Well, look, there's Emily's stall, but where's Emily?

0:03:38 > 0:03:40- There's ice cream in the freezer! - Oi-oi!

0:03:40 > 0:03:43You'll have to ask Emily first, Ernie.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46I will! But where is she?!

0:03:46 > 0:03:49- Oh, what's going on today?! - I have to get back to The Rainbow.

0:03:49 > 0:03:53I've got jobs to do. We could find you something to eat on board.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56No, you're all right, Jack, I'll wait here for Emily.

0:03:56 > 0:03:58- All right. Good luck. - Catch you later, Jack.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09There she is! The Rainbow!

0:04:09 > 0:04:12What have you got for us today, my dear?

0:04:12 > 0:04:14FOGHORN

0:04:14 > 0:04:15HE LAUGHS

0:04:15 > 0:04:17Come on, Salty.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19HE HUMS

0:04:19 > 0:04:21There we are.

0:04:21 > 0:04:25WOOD CREAKS

0:04:26 > 0:04:28FOGHORN

0:04:28 > 0:04:31I'll have a look in here.

0:04:31 > 0:04:36Oh. No food for Ernie here either, old girl.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39- HE SIGHS - Nothing to drink either.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42And you can't drink seawater.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45It's too salty, isn't it, Salty?

0:04:45 > 0:04:50Here, do you know how the sea came to be salty?

0:04:50 > 0:04:52Well, Salty and I do.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54I'll just make myself... comfortable.

0:04:54 > 0:04:55Ah!

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Once upon a twinkly time,

0:04:58 > 0:05:03The Rainbow set off from Staithes, waved goodbye to Whitby

0:05:03 > 0:05:06and disappeared over the horizon.

0:05:06 > 0:05:10We were fishing that day, and as we fished, we sang.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13# Just Salty Dog and me

0:05:13 > 0:05:15# On the salty, shiny sea

0:05:15 > 0:05:18# There's all sorts of food we're wanting to eat

0:05:18 > 0:05:22# We need a quick break and a good tasty treat... # Don't we?

0:05:22 > 0:05:25# ..But before it gets wet We'll haul in the net

0:05:25 > 0:05:28- # Just Salty Dog and me. # - FOGHORN

0:05:28 > 0:05:32Salty was hungry, so before we turned for home

0:05:32 > 0:05:34I hauled in the net

0:05:34 > 0:05:38and there, tangled in the seaweed, was a trident.

0:05:38 > 0:05:43Now, as I'm sure you know, the great sea king Neptune carries a trident

0:05:43 > 0:05:45to control the waves.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49It's a kind of magical fork.

0:05:49 > 0:05:53And Salty thought this trident belonged to King Neptune,

0:05:53 > 0:05:57and we should return it to his underwater palace straight away.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59So off we set.

0:05:59 > 0:06:05We waded through the watery world until we got to an underwater gate

0:06:05 > 0:06:09guarded by two gruff-looking soldier fish.

0:06:09 > 0:06:13"What is your business with King Neptune?" said one.

0:06:13 > 0:06:18But then both soldier fish caught sight of the trident

0:06:18 > 0:06:21and their eyes grew round and they bowed a fishy bow.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24"Make way!" shouted one.

0:06:24 > 0:06:28"For the bearer of the trident!" shouted the other.

0:06:28 > 0:06:32Well, the gates swished apart and soon we found ourselves

0:06:32 > 0:06:38in the presence of the great sea king Neptune.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40"My trident!" he bellowed.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43And Salty and I wondered if we were in trouble.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45But we needn't have worried.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48King Neptune was so overjoyed to have his trident back,

0:06:48 > 0:06:52he gave us a gift. "Take this magic shell," he said.

0:06:52 > 0:06:58"Whatever you wish to eat, just ask the shell and it will be yours!"

0:06:58 > 0:07:03Then King Neptune told us the magic words to make it work.

0:07:03 > 0:07:07"Neptune's shell. All is well."

0:07:07 > 0:07:10"But don't forget," warned the sea king,

0:07:10 > 0:07:13"you must always thank the shell for what you receive

0:07:13 > 0:07:18"or the magic will turn against you."

0:07:18 > 0:07:23So we said thank you to King Neptune and went on our way,

0:07:23 > 0:07:26eager to try out our magic shell.

0:07:26 > 0:07:30Back on board The Rainbow, I let Salty have the first wish.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33"Neptune's shell. All is well."

0:07:33 > 0:07:36And Salty woofed her wish.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40She wanted some of her favourite dog biscuits -

0:07:40 > 0:07:43peanut butter flavour.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46To our amazement, the magic shell

0:07:46 > 0:07:50poured out a load of beautiful biscuits.

0:07:50 > 0:07:55And, of course, both Salty and I were very careful to say thank you.

0:07:55 > 0:07:57And now it was my turn.

0:07:57 > 0:08:01As I was considering what my wish would be,

0:08:01 > 0:08:05a ship drew up close to The Rainbow.

0:08:05 > 0:08:09It was The Hurlyburly, with Kitty Cutlass at the helm.

0:08:09 > 0:08:15Her pirate nose was a-twitching at the smell of peanut butter.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19But of course, I didn't notice her creeping up on us -

0:08:19 > 0:08:22I was still working on my wish.

0:08:22 > 0:08:25"Neptune's shell. All is well." I said.

0:08:25 > 0:08:30"I'd like some fat golden chips, please."

0:08:30 > 0:08:36In a twinkle, the shell poured out a pile of beautiful golden chips!

0:08:36 > 0:08:40And, of course, I remembered to say thank you.

0:08:40 > 0:08:44If I'm honest, as good as they looked,

0:08:44 > 0:08:46the chips needed a bit of salt.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49So we nipped down to the galley for the salt pot.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53I had no idea that Kitty was watching,

0:08:53 > 0:08:55and she had a dastardly plan.

0:08:55 > 0:09:00While we were gone, that rascally pirate took the opportunity

0:09:00 > 0:09:06to nip in and steal my chips, and the magic shell as well.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08Well, when I returned with the salt pot,

0:09:08 > 0:09:11I found my chips had disappeared.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13And where was the magic shell?

0:09:13 > 0:09:19Salty pointed to a distant ship sailing away as fast as it could.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21The Hurlyburly, of course!

0:09:21 > 0:09:27Kitty Cutlass was sailing away with the magic shell and my lunch!

0:09:27 > 0:09:30What a rascally pirate she is!

0:09:30 > 0:09:32On board The Hurlyburly,

0:09:32 > 0:09:36Kitty settled down to eat her ill-gotten gains.

0:09:36 > 0:09:41But as she tasted the chips, she made a sort of scrunched-up face.

0:09:41 > 0:09:47"Urgh! Jack was right," she said, "they do need a bit of salt."

0:09:47 > 0:09:53"Well, since I have a magic shell, I think I shall magic some salt."

0:09:53 > 0:09:56"Now, what were the magic words?"

0:09:56 > 0:10:00"Ah, yes. 'Neptune's shell. All is well.' "

0:10:00 > 0:10:03"I want some salt now!"

0:10:03 > 0:10:06Well, no sooner had Kitty wished

0:10:06 > 0:10:11than the first little sprinkle of salt came out of the shell.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14"Oh, more than that," said Kitty crossly.

0:10:14 > 0:10:19The shell sprinkled a little bit more than the first time.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22"Oh, come on!" barked Kitty. "More!"

0:10:22 > 0:10:29So the salt started to sprinkle out of the shell even faster.

0:10:29 > 0:10:32"Right, stop there," said Kitty.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35But the shell didn't stop.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38Soon the chips were completely covered with salt

0:10:38 > 0:10:40and couldn't be eaten.

0:10:40 > 0:10:44And still the shell didn't stop pouring out salt.

0:10:44 > 0:10:49It's well known that pirates have very bad manners,

0:10:49 > 0:10:52and, of course, Kitty hadn't thanked the shell.

0:10:52 > 0:10:56So the salt just kept on flowing and flowing,

0:10:56 > 0:11:00over the table, on to the floor, still it kept coming.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04More and more salt poured out of the shell

0:11:04 > 0:11:07until the ship was almost completely full.

0:11:07 > 0:11:11Any more salt, and The Hurlyburly would sink!

0:11:11 > 0:11:13There was nothing for it.

0:11:13 > 0:11:18Kitty picked up the magic shell and hurled it into the sea!

0:11:18 > 0:11:22Where it disappeared with an enormous splash.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25She then had to spend the rest of the day

0:11:25 > 0:11:29shovelling salt out of her boat to stop it sinking,

0:11:29 > 0:11:32which served her right.

0:11:34 > 0:11:40I was still hungry, but I wasn't sure about magical chips after that,

0:11:40 > 0:11:44so I peeled some spuds and cooked myself chips

0:11:44 > 0:11:46the usual way - on the stove.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48And gorgeous they were, too.

0:11:48 > 0:11:52Especially with a little sprinkle of salt on them.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54And the magic shell?

0:11:54 > 0:12:00Well, it came to rest far below the waves on the seabed.

0:12:00 > 0:12:04And because Kitty didn't say thank you,

0:12:04 > 0:12:09it continues to pour out salt to this very day.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12And that's why the sea is salty.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15- Isn't that right, Salty? - SALTY BARKS

0:12:15 > 0:12:18Mmm. See, she knows. Oh, yes.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21FOGHORN

0:12:24 > 0:12:27You like that story, Salty? Yeah?

0:12:27 > 0:12:29All true, of course.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32- Mind you, my stories always are. - HE LAUGHS

0:12:32 > 0:12:34Come on, girl.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45You know, Salty, it's still a bit of a mystery to me

0:12:45 > 0:12:47how you learnt to catch dog biscuits.

0:12:47 > 0:12:48Oh! Hiya, Jack!

0:12:48 > 0:12:51I see you've found some ice cream after all.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54It's my lucky day. Remember we had that power cut?

0:12:54 > 0:12:57Yeah. There was no electricity. Shelly couldn't finish her baking.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59That's right. It also meant

0:12:59 > 0:13:03that Emily's ice cream freezer wasn't working.

0:13:03 > 0:13:07- And?- That meant it would melt if it didn't get eaten!

0:13:07 > 0:13:11I can't have all this ice cream going to waste,

0:13:11 > 0:13:14so I wonder if you'd help us eat it?

0:13:14 > 0:13:16Well, I think I could manage a little.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18- Oh, marvellous!- Thank you.

0:13:18 > 0:13:22- Oh, I haven't forgotten you, Salty. - Eh?

0:13:22 > 0:13:25Good girl! Well learnt!

0:13:25 > 0:13:27So you're the one who taught her that!

0:13:27 > 0:13:32Of course! Salty often pops by for a little dog biscuit, don't you?

0:13:32 > 0:13:36You never told me that, did you? Did you?

0:13:36 > 0:13:39Biscuit-catching mystery solved! Ice cream, anyone?

0:13:39 > 0:13:42- Yes, please. - LAUGHS

0:13:42 > 0:13:46- Look at that! That's a good bit! - I've got a bit with toffee on!

0:13:46 > 0:13:48Mmm! Lovely!
