0:03:27 > 0:03:29'Ha-ha!'

0:03:33 > 0:03:37Ha-ha! Dear me. Do you remember him?
0:03:37 > 0:03:42Oh, he was the oldest sailor in the world. Remember the day he ran away?
0:03:42 > 0:03:45Hoo! Here, let me tell you the story.
0:03:45 > 0:03:50Once upon a twinkly time, the Rainbow set off from Staithes,
0:03:50 > 0:03:55waved goodbye to Whitby and disappeared over the horizon.
0:03:55 > 0:03:59And as we sailed along the coast, we sang.
0:03:59 > 0:04:03# Just Salty Dog and me Upon the silvery sea
0:04:03 > 0:04:06# We're never too old for a sail in the sun
0:04:06 > 0:04:09# It's never a bother We always have fun
0:04:09 > 0:04:12# We'll sail on for years With the wind in our ears
0:04:12 > 0:04:14# Just Salty Dog and me. #
0:04:14 > 0:04:17Ha-ha-ha-ha!
0:04:17 > 0:04:21Well, we had just finished singing when a voice cried out,
0:04:21 > 0:04:24"Hello, young man!" "Young man?" I thought.
0:04:24 > 0:04:27"It's been a while since anybody called me that.
0:04:27 > 0:04:30"There's only one person it can be."
0:04:30 > 0:04:34I looked at the shore through my trusty old telescope. Ha-ha!
0:04:34 > 0:04:38And there he was, Grandpa Pops.
0:04:38 > 0:04:41Now, Grandpa Pops had a beaming, sunny face.
0:04:41 > 0:04:44He was an old man when I was a boy.
0:04:44 > 0:04:49Some people in the village said he must be 114 years old.
0:04:49 > 0:04:52The oldest sailor in the world.
0:04:52 > 0:04:56And now he was sitting outside the old folks' home in his wheelchair.
0:04:56 > 0:05:02He called out, "Jack, young fellow my lad, can I ask you a favour?
0:05:02 > 0:05:07"Can you take me for a ride on the Rainbow one last time?"
0:05:07 > 0:05:11Well, I called back, "I'd love to, but you've got really kind doctors
0:05:11 > 0:05:14"and really nice nurses inside that old folks' home.
0:05:14 > 0:05:18"Won't they mind if I take you out to sea?"
0:05:18 > 0:05:23"No, they won't mind a bit," said Grandpa Pops.
0:05:23 > 0:05:26And he wheeled himself down to the jetty at top speed,
0:05:26 > 0:05:31saying, "Whee-ee-ee!" all the way down.
0:05:31 > 0:05:34I was just helping him on board the Rainbow
0:05:34 > 0:05:37when I heard voices calling out. "Grandpa!" they shouted.
0:05:37 > 0:05:40"Grandpa Pops, where are you?"
0:05:40 > 0:05:43I could see all the kind doctors and all the nice nurses
0:05:43 > 0:05:47from the old folks' home looking for Grandpa Pops.
0:05:47 > 0:05:50I said, "Grandpa Pops, I'd better take you back."
0:05:50 > 0:05:54But he said, "No, lad, it's just a game of hide and seek. Let's go."
0:05:54 > 0:05:58So we set out to sea, but behind us all the kind doctors
0:05:58 > 0:06:03and all the nice nurses came running down to the jetty.
0:06:03 > 0:06:07They shouted out, "Grandpa Pops! Grandpa Pops! Come back!"
0:06:07 > 0:06:09But Grandpa Pops said to me,
0:06:09 > 0:06:12"Don't worry about them, they're only having fun.
0:06:12 > 0:06:14"Keep going!"
0:06:14 > 0:06:18So we sailed along the coast, but all the kind doctors
0:06:18 > 0:06:22and all the nice nurses kept chasing over the cliff tops.
0:06:22 > 0:06:25They shouted, "Come back, Grandpa Pops!
0:06:25 > 0:06:29"It's time you had your tea, it's time you went to bed! Come back!"
0:06:29 > 0:06:33And now, I was a tiny little bit suspicious.
0:06:33 > 0:06:38I said, "Grandpa Pops, are you being naughty?"
0:06:39 > 0:06:44And Grandpa Pops gave a cheeky smile and he said, "Naughty?
0:06:44 > 0:06:47"Why, Jack, I don't know the meaning of the word."
0:06:47 > 0:06:50Then he took hold of the ship's wheel
0:06:50 > 0:06:53and steered the Rainbow out to sea.
0:06:53 > 0:06:56All the kind doctors and nice nurses stood on the cliffs
0:06:56 > 0:07:01and watched us go until they became tiny little dots in the distance.
0:07:01 > 0:07:02- And then... - POP!
0:07:02 > 0:07:05..they were gone.
0:07:05 > 0:07:08Now, I'm not daft.
0:07:08 > 0:07:12I knew that Grandpa Pops was being a little bit naughty.
0:07:12 > 0:07:16But then I thought, "Maybe that is allowed,
0:07:16 > 0:07:19"just once when you have had your 114th birthday."
0:07:19 > 0:07:21Hoo-hoo!
0:07:21 > 0:07:25So I said, "I don't mind a bit of fun and games
0:07:25 > 0:07:27"but as soon as we return,
0:07:27 > 0:07:30"I'm taking you straight back to the old folks' home."
0:07:30 > 0:07:36But Grandpa Pops just smiled. Like he had a little secret.
0:07:36 > 0:07:40And he whistled a sea shanty as we sailed far out to sea.
0:07:40 > 0:07:42WHISTLING
0:07:42 > 0:07:44After a while, Salty started barking.
0:07:44 > 0:07:48She woofed, "I know where we are."
0:07:48 > 0:07:52I looked around and said, "This is where Pearl lives."
0:07:52 > 0:07:54Huh, and there she was,
0:07:54 > 0:07:56Pearl, the mermaid - swimming, waving,
0:07:56 > 0:08:01splashing the water with her long, silvery, mermaid's tail.
0:08:01 > 0:08:02She called out,
0:08:02 > 0:08:07"Hello, Jack! Hello, Salty! Hello, Grandpa Pops!"
0:08:07 > 0:08:11I was a bit surprised. I said, "How do you know Grandpa Pops?"
0:08:11 > 0:08:15Pearl said, "All the mer-people know Grandpa Pops."
0:08:15 > 0:08:18"That's me!" said Grandpa Pops.
0:08:18 > 0:08:22And he wheeled his wheelchair up to the edge of the boat
0:08:22 > 0:08:28and then he jumped overboard into the water, splash.
0:08:30 > 0:08:36"Goodness me," I said. "Be careful, Grandpa Pops!" But he could swim.
0:08:36 > 0:08:41Grandpa Pops could swim like a bird flies through the sky.
0:08:41 > 0:08:44All of a sudden, he didn't look old.
0:08:44 > 0:08:48He looked as young as can be as he darted through the water,
0:08:48 > 0:08:51laughing with Pearl swimming around him.
0:08:51 > 0:08:54Salty and I were laughing, too,
0:08:54 > 0:08:57cos we had never seen anyone look so happy.
0:08:57 > 0:09:03Then Grandpa Pops said to Pearl, "I've come to collect my gift."
0:09:03 > 0:09:08I said, "What gift is that, then?" And Pearl explained.
0:09:08 > 0:09:12Once upon a time, Grandpa Pops did a wonderful thing.
0:09:12 > 0:09:16The King of the Sea had a child, his only son,
0:09:16 > 0:09:19but the boy had fallen into a deep, deep sleep
0:09:19 > 0:09:20and no-one could wake him.
0:09:20 > 0:09:24"Oh, dear," I said, "that is sad." "No, it's not," said Pearl,
0:09:24 > 0:09:30"because the Sea King called out for help, and Grandpa Pops arrived.
0:09:30 > 0:09:33"He looked at the boy in his deep, deep sleep."
0:09:33 > 0:09:35"And what did he do?" I said.
0:09:35 > 0:09:40Pearl replied, "He held a bottle of pop under the boy's nose,
0:09:40 > 0:09:44"and the fizzy bubbles woke him up.
0:09:44 > 0:09:48"That's why everyone calls him Grandpa Pops, because of the pop."
0:09:48 > 0:09:53Then Grandpa Pops said, "The Sea King promised me a gift to thank me
0:09:53 > 0:09:56"for saving his son all those years ago
0:09:56 > 0:09:59"and now I've come to collect it."
0:10:00 > 0:10:03Pearl said, "I will summon the King,"
0:10:03 > 0:10:05and she blew upon a conch shell.
0:10:05 > 0:10:09It made a loud, magnificent sound.
0:10:09 > 0:10:12CONCH BLOWS LIKE A HORN
0:10:12 > 0:10:17Then, the water rose up, and the sea spray curled back
0:10:17 > 0:10:23like a huge fountain, and the mighty Sea King rose out of the water.
0:10:23 > 0:10:26He sat on a big, tall throne made of coral.
0:10:26 > 0:10:31I've never seen the Sea King looking so splendid,
0:10:31 > 0:10:32all wrapped in seaweed,
0:10:32 > 0:10:35carrying a trident, with shoals of mermaids
0:10:35 > 0:10:39and mermen swimming all around him. I was amazed.
0:10:39 > 0:10:42And Grandpa Pops called out,
0:10:42 > 0:10:46"I'm here, oh, mighty King, can I have my gift now?"
0:10:47 > 0:10:50The Sea King looked down upon us.
0:10:50 > 0:10:56I have never seen eyes so ancient and powerful.
0:10:56 > 0:10:59He didn't say a single word
0:10:59 > 0:11:04but he lifted up his trident and pointed it at Grandpa Pops,
0:11:04 > 0:11:10and magic came out of his trident, a swirl of stars and water
0:11:10 > 0:11:14and glitter and magic swirled around Grandpa Pops.
0:11:14 > 0:11:18He laughed and laughed like a tickle.
0:11:18 > 0:11:20And I said, "Look at that, Salty."
0:11:20 > 0:11:23The magic swirled around Grandpa Pops' legs,
0:11:23 > 0:11:27and his legs began to change.
0:11:27 > 0:11:31His knobbly knees faded away, and all of a sudden,
0:11:31 > 0:11:37Grandpa Pops had a fishtail, all silvery and shiny,
0:11:37 > 0:11:42just like the mermaids and the mermen. Now he could really swim.
0:11:42 > 0:11:45With a whoop, he dived up into the air
0:11:45 > 0:11:48then plunged down into the depths.
0:11:50 > 0:11:53Then back up again, laughing and laughing as he went.
0:11:53 > 0:11:56It looked like so much fun.
0:11:56 > 0:12:00Then he called out, "Goodbye, Jack!
0:12:00 > 0:12:01"Goodbye, Salty!
0:12:01 > 0:12:06"I'm going to join the mer-people and swim with them for ever."
0:12:06 > 0:12:09I said, "But what about the old folks' home?"
0:12:09 > 0:12:11He said, "I'm not old any more!
0:12:11 > 0:12:14"They won't have room for me.
0:12:14 > 0:12:19"I am as ageless as the water now. I'm as young as a mountain spring."
0:12:19 > 0:12:23And then the mighty Sea King sank beneath the waves,
0:12:23 > 0:12:27and all the others plunged down alongside him.
0:12:27 > 0:12:32I caught one last glimpse of Grandpa Pops, laughing with Pearl
0:12:32 > 0:12:37and her sisters as they swam away into the underwater kingdom
0:12:37 > 0:12:40to begin his new life.
0:12:40 > 0:12:44And to this day, I still hear him sometimes.
0:12:44 > 0:12:47When the wind is in the right direction,
0:12:47 > 0:12:53I catch a drift of Grandpa Pops, far out at sea,
0:12:53 > 0:12:58laughing and laughing with the mermaids and the mermen.
0:12:58 > 0:13:01"Keep swimming!" I call to the waves.
0:13:01 > 0:13:07"You keep swimming, Grandpa Pops! Swim for ever!"
0:13:16 > 0:13:17'Calling Jack!'
0:13:17 > 0:13:19Calling Jack!
0:13:20 > 0:13:25And now for that snooze, Salty. All I need is a duster.
0:13:25 > 0:13:27'Calling Jack. Calling Jack...'
0:13:27 > 0:13:32There you are. Little trick I learnt from Grandpa Pops. There.
0:13:32 > 0:13:34MUFFLED: 'Calling Jack!'
0:13:38 > 0:13:43- Calling Jack! Jack, can you hear me? - It should be working.
0:13:43 > 0:13:48- I fixed it myself.- You don't think he's avoiding us, do you?- Jack?! No!
0:13:48 > 0:13:51He'd never do that. Would he?
