0:01:41 > 0:01:45Ah, well, Salty, I wonder what the weather's going to do today?

0:01:45 > 0:01:47I think we'd better go and ask Emily.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50She always knows, doesn't she? Come on, girl.

0:01:50 > 0:01:51Go on, down here. That's it.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56- Hello, Em! What's the weather going to be like?- Ssh!

0:01:56 > 0:01:57What's up?

0:01:57 > 0:01:59- I'm nesting!- Oh, right.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02So I can't tell you what the weather's going to be like.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06- Right, right, right.- I'm not having a very good morning, actually.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09- What is it, the seagulls? - Seagulls.- Yeah.

0:02:09 > 0:02:13- Seem to be plenty of them around. - Yes, but they're nesting.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16And when they're nesting, they can't hang around with me

0:02:16 > 0:02:18- and predict the weather.- No.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21So I've built meself a nest to attract them over.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24- Right. Any luck?- Nothing.- No.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28Don't ask me what the weather's going to do because I've no idea!

0:02:28 > 0:02:31I'll, I'll, I'll leave you to your nesting.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33- Thank you, Jack. - Yes. Come along, Salty.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38You look busy, Sam.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41Hello, you two! Nice to see you.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44You've got your work cut out with this lot, haven't you?

0:02:44 > 0:02:48We're overrun with seaweed. I'm trying to clear some of it away.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50I don't know what I'm going to do with it!

0:02:50 > 0:02:52You've got some in your...

0:02:52 > 0:02:55- Toolbox?- No.- Coffee.- No, no, no.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58- In your hair. Look. - Ooo! Seaweed hair!

0:02:58 > 0:03:00- Why didn't you say?- Well, I tried.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03I wish I had some idea what to do with this.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05Why don't you talk to Emily?

0:03:05 > 0:03:07She could make ice cream out of anything.

0:03:07 > 0:03:11Hm! Good idea, Jack. I'll take it to Emily.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13She's up there. She's nesting.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17Yes. We'd better get going, then. Oh, by the way, you missed a bit.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20- Goodbye, Jack.- Goodbye.

0:03:20 > 0:03:25- You missed a bit! That was a good one, wasn't it, Salty?- Oh, dear!

0:03:32 > 0:03:36There she is! The Rainbow!

0:03:36 > 0:03:38What have you got for us today, me dear?

0:03:38 > 0:03:40WHISTLE TOOTS

0:03:40 > 0:03:43Hey-hey! Come on, Salty.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46JACK HUMS A TUNE

0:03:46 > 0:03:47Here we are.

0:03:55 > 0:03:59Go on, then, in your bed. Good girl! Go on. Huh!

0:03:59 > 0:04:04Sam was getting in a tangle with that seaweed, wasn't she, Salty?

0:04:04 > 0:04:08I seem to remember that our favourite mermaid, Pearl,

0:04:08 > 0:04:10she had the same problem once.

0:04:10 > 0:04:11Do you remember? Yeah.

0:04:11 > 0:04:15Let me get comfortable and I'll tell you the story.

0:04:15 > 0:04:16Oh, yes, Salty!

0:04:16 > 0:04:21This will make your fur go curly, this one will. Ha-ha! Right.

0:04:21 > 0:04:26Once upon a twinkly time, the Rainbow set off from Staithes,

0:04:26 > 0:04:31waved goodbye to Whitby and disappeared over the horizon.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34"I'm in the mood for a singsong," said Salty.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36"And so am I," I said.

0:04:36 > 0:04:40# Just Salty Dog and me

0:04:40 > 0:04:41# Upon the briny sea

0:04:41 > 0:04:44# You never did see such a smiley pair

0:04:44 > 0:04:47# We're sailing off to who-knows-where

0:04:47 > 0:04:51# With the wind to assist us and whiffle our whiskers... #

0:04:51 > 0:04:53Whiffle-whiffle-whiffle!

0:04:53 > 0:04:56# Just Salty Dog and me. #

0:04:56 > 0:04:59Suddenly, out of nowhere, there was a huge bump

0:04:59 > 0:05:02which sent us skittering across the deck

0:05:02 > 0:05:05and made the Rainbow rock wildly.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09"Scuttling spider crabs, what was that?" I cried.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13We looked overboard to see what had caused the problem,

0:05:13 > 0:05:17but all we saw was a carpet of seaweed floating on the waves.

0:05:17 > 0:05:22"Not to worry, Salty, whatever it was has gone now," I said.

0:05:22 > 0:05:26"Let's get on with giving you a good brush."

0:05:26 > 0:05:32Salty sat very nicely at first, cos she likes being brushed, you see.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35Says it feels like a lot of tiny tickles.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38And then, who should appear from out of the waves

0:05:38 > 0:05:41but our favourite mermaid, Pearl.

0:05:41 > 0:05:43"All right, Pearl?" I said.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46"Lovely to see you, but what has happened to your hair?

0:05:46 > 0:05:49"I've never seen it in such a mess."

0:05:49 > 0:05:53"I haven't had time to comb it," she said.

0:05:53 > 0:05:59"But seeing as Salty is having her fur brushed, I'll pamper myself."

0:05:59 > 0:06:05So she got out her shell comb and she began to comb her hair.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08Salty suddenly let out a yowl.

0:06:08 > 0:06:10"Y-e-e-e-eow!

0:06:10 > 0:06:13"There's a huge seaweed beasty in the sea!"

0:06:13 > 0:06:16But when Pearl and I looked,

0:06:16 > 0:06:21all we could see was a carpet of seaweed floating on the waves.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26But before I could reply, another huge bump rocked the boat.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28"Galloping seahorses," I said.

0:06:28 > 0:06:32"Something's giving us the bumps! Ooo!"

0:06:32 > 0:06:37"Well, whatever it is has made me drop my comb," said Pearl crossly.

0:06:37 > 0:06:41Well, we looked overboard and saw the carpet of seaweed.

0:06:41 > 0:06:43Then something sparkled.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45"My comb!" cried Pearl.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47"It's caught in the seaweed!"

0:06:47 > 0:06:51And she jumped into the waves to rescue it.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54Then, before you could say jiggly jellyfish,

0:06:54 > 0:06:59the seaweed carpet rose out of the waves

0:06:59 > 0:07:01with Pearl tangled in it.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05"That's no seaweed carpet," I said.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09"It's the seaweed hair on the humungous head

0:07:09 > 0:07:12"of a huge seaweed beasty!"

0:07:12 > 0:07:14"Help!" cried Pearl.

0:07:14 > 0:07:20"Uh-oh," I said. "There is a huge seaweed beasty after all."

0:07:20 > 0:07:23"I told you so," barked Salty.

0:07:23 > 0:07:27The seaweed beasty jolted the boat again

0:07:27 > 0:07:32and then swam off at speed with Pearl clinging to it.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35"Jump off, Pearl!" we cried.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38"I can't! I'm tangled!" she called.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41"Come on, Salty", I said, taking the wheel.

0:07:41 > 0:07:43"We'd better make chase."

0:07:44 > 0:07:49Well, the beasty swam north with us close behind.

0:07:49 > 0:07:54Lighthouse Rock was up ahead and the beasty swam straight for it.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57"Watch out for the rock," we cried.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59But it was too late. The beasty hit it.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02Ooo! Huge bump!

0:08:02 > 0:08:04Making the lighthouse wibble-wobble.

0:08:04 > 0:08:08"Oi!" cried the lighthouse keeper, shaking her fist.

0:08:08 > 0:08:12"Sorry," cried Pearl, "but the beasty won't stop!"

0:08:12 > 0:08:15"Hold on tight, Pearl, we're not far behind you," I called.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19The beasty kept swimming north.

0:08:19 > 0:08:22The waves were choppy now and a keen wind was blowing.

0:08:22 > 0:08:25It started to feel very chilly. Brrr!

0:08:25 > 0:08:28I mean, there were icicles hanging from our whiskers.

0:08:28 > 0:08:33On and on swam the beasty until it reached the Sea of Icebergs,

0:08:33 > 0:08:38where blue, white icy mountains rose out of the waves.

0:08:38 > 0:08:41And then suddenly, guess what?

0:08:41 > 0:08:44The beasty stopped.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46"At last," I said.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49And I brought the Rainbow up alongside it.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52"Are you all right, Pearl?" I called.

0:08:52 > 0:08:56"I'm fine, but my hair's more tangly than ever," she answered.

0:08:56 > 0:08:59"I just want to get my comb back."

0:08:59 > 0:09:02Well, Pearl turned to the beasty and asked,

0:09:02 > 0:09:05"Please, could you keep still a moment

0:09:05 > 0:09:09"while I untangle my tail and my lovely shell comb?"

0:09:09 > 0:09:13"Oh, all right, then," groaned the beasty.

0:09:13 > 0:09:15"I'm Pearl, by the way.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19"I've been clinging to the top of your head for quite some time.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22"You really are a very bumpy beasty, aren't you?"

0:09:22 > 0:09:27"Please could you speak a little more quietly?" groaned the beasty.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29"I have a terrible headache."

0:09:29 > 0:09:33"I'm not surprised you have a headache," Pearl whispered,

0:09:33 > 0:09:35as she untangled her tail.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38"You've been bumping into things all day."

0:09:38 > 0:09:40"You even bumped my boat," I added.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43"More than once," yapped Salty.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46"I'm sorry," grizzled the beasty,

0:09:46 > 0:09:48"but I can't see where I'm going.

0:09:48 > 0:09:54"My long, seaweedy hair keeps getting in the way."

0:09:54 > 0:09:58"Salty has that problem sometimes," I said.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01"And I have to give her fur a good combing,

0:10:01 > 0:10:05"but we'd never get a comb through your seaweed coils."

0:10:05 > 0:10:06Phwoar! Look at it!

0:10:06 > 0:10:10We wanted to help, but didn't know how.

0:10:10 > 0:10:15And then suddenly, Salty's whiskers whiffled.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18She was having one of her bright ideas.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20And off she scampered.

0:10:20 > 0:10:25Then she came back with a bit of spare netting in her mouth.

0:10:25 > 0:10:29She wanted us to make the beasty a hair net.

0:10:29 > 0:10:34"Oh, that's a brilliant idea, Salty, my girl," I said.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37"Let me get my comb out first, though," said Pearl.

0:10:37 > 0:10:41And she gently freed it from the beasty's curls.

0:10:41 > 0:10:46Then we twined its hair into a curly knot.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49And we put the fishing net on top.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51It looked very smart indeed.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55"Oh, thank you," said the beasty.

0:10:55 > 0:10:59"Now I can see where I'm going."

0:10:59 > 0:11:02Well, it was time to head for home.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04But we had a problem.

0:11:04 > 0:11:08The icebergs had surrounded us.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11It was going to be impossible to get the boat through them

0:11:11 > 0:11:13without hitting them.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17And if you bash into an iceberg, it can sink your ship.

0:11:17 > 0:11:19"Now we're scuppered," I said.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23"Don't worry," said the seaweed beasty.

0:11:23 > 0:11:27"I can give the icebergs the bumps."

0:11:27 > 0:11:29"But what about your headache?" said Pearl.

0:11:29 > 0:11:35"This time, I'll use my tail," said the beasty.

0:11:35 > 0:11:36Bump!

0:11:36 > 0:11:41It bumped the icebergs with its huge, powerful tail,

0:11:41 > 0:11:44making a clear path.

0:11:44 > 0:11:50"You're a very helpful beasty," we called, as we set our course south.

0:11:50 > 0:11:54"And you've got a great hairstyle, too." Ha-ha!

0:11:54 > 0:12:00And with that, we sailed off to Staithes and home. Hm-hm!

0:12:00 > 0:12:02What a voyage, eh! Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!

0:12:09 > 0:12:11Did you like that story, Salty?

0:12:11 > 0:12:14Yeah? All true, of course.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17Mind you, my stories always are. Ho-ho-ho!

0:12:17 > 0:12:18Come on, girl.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29- Jack!- Hi, Sam. How did you get on?

0:12:29 > 0:12:32- I managed to clear the worst of it away.- Oh, good.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34What have you done with it? Don't tell me.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37- Emily's put it in the ice cream, right?- No.

0:12:37 > 0:12:39This is vanilla, thank goodness.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42But Emily did get very excited when she saw the seaweed.

0:12:42 > 0:12:44She's found a use for it all right.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47- What would that be, I wonder? - Go and see.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50Yeah. Come on, Salty. This could be interesting. Ta-ta.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52Yeah. Come on, girl.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56Oh, look at that, Salty!

0:12:56 > 0:13:01Our very own Em has become the seaweed queen of Staithes.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03Enough of your teasing, Jack!

0:13:03 > 0:13:06This seaweed is very useful, I'll have you know.

0:13:06 > 0:13:08Especially if you can't rely on seagulls.

0:13:08 > 0:13:13Tell us what it's useful for. We can't wait to hear, can we, Salty?

0:13:13 > 0:13:17- Well, I can use it for forecasting the weather.- Oh!

0:13:17 > 0:13:22When the seaweed's moist, it means it's going to rain.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25But when it's dry, it'll be dry all day.

0:13:25 > 0:13:30- Oh, your luck's in! It's dry! - So now you've got the seaweed,

0:13:30 > 0:13:33you don't need the seagulls to forecast the weather.

0:13:33 > 0:13:35Ooo, I don't know about that.

0:13:35 > 0:13:39This seaweed doesn't half smell fishy!

0:13:39 > 0:13:41Yeah? Ooo, yes! Ooo, yeah!

0:13:41 > 0:13:43Come on, Salty, let's get home. Ha-ha!

0:13:43 > 0:13:45- Ta-ta, Em!- Ta-ta!
