0:03:46 > 0:03:50There you go, Salty. Don't distract me. Into bed.

0:03:50 > 0:03:58Now, I'd better put this little purse somewhere safe. Let me see.

0:03:58 > 0:04:02Yes, that'll do in there.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05Do you know what?

0:04:05 > 0:04:11I seem to remember that our favourite mermaid, Pearl,

0:04:11 > 0:04:16she lost something once that was very, very precious. Yes.

0:04:16 > 0:04:20Let me get comfortable and I'll tell you the story.

0:04:20 > 0:04:25Ah, yes, Salty, this'll make your ears prick up, all right.

0:04:25 > 0:04:29Once upon a twinkly time, the Rainbow set off from Staithes,

0:04:29 > 0:04:34waved goodbye to Whitby and disappeared over the horizon.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38It was one of those glorious fine weather days

0:04:38 > 0:04:40when even the waves seem lazy.

0:04:40 > 0:04:44The Rainbow was gently bobbing along

0:04:44 > 0:04:47and Salty and I were having a sing-song.

0:04:47 > 0:04:51# Just Salty Dog and me, upon the briny sea

0:04:51 > 0:04:54# It's one of those wonderful hazy days,

0:04:54 > 0:04:57# For bobbing along on the lazy waves

0:04:57 > 0:05:00# The sun is a-beaming, we're busy daydreaming,

0:05:00 > 0:05:03# Just Salty Dog and me. #

0:05:03 > 0:05:08Salty, she likes a good sing-song, you know! Don't you, Salty!

0:05:08 > 0:05:13Anyway, there she was lying on her back, jiggling her legs

0:05:13 > 0:05:19and sunning her belly, when suddenly, her nose twitched.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21"Pearl's coming!" she woofed!

0:05:21 > 0:05:26Well, we listened for our favourite mermaid's song,

0:05:26 > 0:05:32but we couldn't hear it. And then, I spotted her at the stern.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35"Pearl," I called out, "Good to see you!

0:05:35 > 0:05:39"Not in the mood for singing today?"

0:05:39 > 0:05:43Pearl mouthed some words but no sounds came out.

0:05:43 > 0:05:49"I think our little mermaid friend has lost her voice," I said.

0:05:49 > 0:05:53"And she's such a lovely singer too," said Salty.

0:05:53 > 0:05:58She put her paws over her head to show how sad she was.

0:05:58 > 0:06:03Poor Pearl, she looked quite upset.

0:06:03 > 0:06:08She was supposed to be singing at the Sea King's party later that day.

0:06:08 > 0:06:12The Sea King was sure to be disappointed.

0:06:12 > 0:06:18"You can't help it if you've lost your voice, my girl," I told her.

0:06:18 > 0:06:20Then, I had an idea. "I know.

0:06:20 > 0:06:25"Why don't Salty and I help you find another singer?"

0:06:25 > 0:06:31A big smile spread across Pearl's pretty face.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35She liked the plan very much, so, before you could say,

0:06:35 > 0:06:40"Scuttling spider crabs", we were under the sea.

0:06:40 > 0:06:45Off we went to find a singer to sing for the Sea King!

0:06:45 > 0:06:50"A swim, swim, swim.

0:06:50 > 0:06:54"Who'd like to sing a song for the Sea King?" we chanted.

0:06:54 > 0:06:59Suddenly, we met Buster the crab. Oh, oh-oh!

0:06:59 > 0:07:06With eyes on stalks and a sideways walk. "Can you sing?" we asked him.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09"No," said Buster, "but I can clack!"

0:07:09 > 0:07:11He showed off his unusual dance,

0:07:11 > 0:07:14opening his claws and snapping them shut.

0:07:14 > 0:07:21"Your clacking is smashing!" I said, "but we are looking for someone

0:07:21 > 0:07:27"to sing for the Sea King." So, we swam on and the crab swam with us.

0:07:27 > 0:07:31"A swim, a swim, a swim.

0:07:31 > 0:07:35"Who'd like to sing a song for the Sea King?" we chanted.

0:07:35 > 0:07:41Then we came to a sandy lagoon where we met Percy the pipefish.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44"Can you sing?" Salty asked him.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48"No," the pipefish piped, "but I can pipe!" And he showed us.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50HE PIPES A TUNE

0:07:50 > 0:07:53"I find your piping to my liking," I said,

0:07:53 > 0:07:59"but we're looking for someone to sing for the Sea King."

0:07:59 > 0:08:06So, we swam on. Percy the pipefish and Buster the crab swam with us.

0:08:06 > 0:08:10"A swim, swim, swim, a swim, swim, swim.

0:08:10 > 0:08:14"Who'd like to sing a song for the Sea King?" we chanted.

0:08:14 > 0:08:20Before too long, we met a floaty, bloaty pufferfish called Nicola.

0:08:20 > 0:08:26"Can you sing?" I asked her. "Sing? Oh, no, sir, no.

0:08:26 > 0:08:31"But I can make a sound that's low," said Nicola.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35And she puffed herself out like a fishy balloon

0:08:35 > 0:08:39and she cleared her throat, "Ahem!"

0:08:39 > 0:08:44And she let out a low, slow, rippling sound.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46BUBBLY GURGLES

0:08:46 > 0:08:50"I like your sound, I really do, and I'm sure a king

0:08:50 > 0:08:55"would like it too, but it isn't really singing, is it?" I said.

0:08:55 > 0:09:00So, we swam on. And Nicola the pufferfish, Percy the pipefish

0:09:00 > 0:09:03and Buster the crab swam with us.

0:09:03 > 0:09:09By the time we reached the sunken galleon, a shoal of little fish

0:09:09 > 0:09:14all shimmering and silverish, they joined us too.

0:09:14 > 0:09:19The Sea King sat on his throne, drinking a seaweed smoothie.

0:09:19 > 0:09:24And all his sea creatures were gathered around him.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27"Ah, Pearl, you've come just in time!"

0:09:27 > 0:09:32He said, "We're all looking forward to your song."

0:09:32 > 0:09:36"I'm sorry, Your Majesty, but Pearl can't sing." I said,

0:09:36 > 0:09:39"she's lost her voice."

0:09:39 > 0:09:43"I'm sorry to hear that," said the Sea King.

0:09:43 > 0:09:49"Is there anyone else who could sing for me?" he asked.

0:09:49 > 0:09:55Everyone went very quiet, then Salty put her head on one side,

0:09:55 > 0:09:58"Why don't we sing?" she said.

0:09:58 > 0:10:05"I think we sound very good as long as you don't drown me out."

0:10:05 > 0:10:09And so, we sang and all our friends joined in.

0:10:09 > 0:10:14# Just Salty Dog and me, upon the briny sea

0:10:14 > 0:10:16# It's one of those wonderful hazy days

0:10:16 > 0:10:19# For bobbing along on the lazy waves

0:10:19 > 0:10:23# The sun is a-beaming, we're busy daydreaming

0:10:23 > 0:10:26# Just Salty Dog and me. # Haha!

0:10:26 > 0:10:29Pearl thought it was so lovely

0:10:29 > 0:10:33that a little tear of joy trickled down her face

0:10:33 > 0:10:38and she opened her mermaid's purse to get her hanky out

0:10:38 > 0:10:41and out came her lost voice.

0:10:41 > 0:10:46"Silly me! I forgot I put it in my purse!" she giggled.

0:10:46 > 0:10:50And she joined in with the singing as well.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54When the song ended, all the sea creatures cheered.

0:10:54 > 0:11:00"Hooray! That was splendid!" said the Sea King, clapping his hands.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04"I'm so glad that you've found your voice, Pearl."

0:11:04 > 0:11:07"So am I," said Pearl, giggling.

0:11:07 > 0:11:12"You must bring your friends to see me again!" said the Sea King,

0:11:12 > 0:11:16and then, he shook my hand and he shook Salty's paw.

0:11:16 > 0:11:21"Splendid," the Sea King muttered, "quite remarkable.

0:11:21 > 0:11:26"I'm afraid I don't have party bags, but please take these little

0:11:26 > 0:11:30"thank-you gifts," said the Sea King, smiling.

0:11:30 > 0:11:34Well, we said our goodbyes and before you could say,

0:11:34 > 0:11:38"gabbling guillemots" we were back on the deck of the Rainbow,

0:11:38 > 0:11:40admiring our lovely gifts.

0:11:40 > 0:11:46There was a shiny stone for Salty, a lucky anchor charm for me

0:11:46 > 0:11:53and a lovely spiral shell for Pearl that whispered the song of the sea.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55Yeah, lovely. Hehehe...

0:12:03 > 0:12:07You like that story, Salty? It's all true.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10Mind you, my stories always are!

0:12:15 > 0:12:17Come on.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30Go on, get up. Hahaha!

0:12:40 > 0:12:43I've given back everything to everyone else,

0:12:43 > 0:12:47but I'm afraid I owe you an apology, because I know I've got something

0:12:47 > 0:12:51- of yours, but I just can't seem to find it.- Not to worry. It'll turn up.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54Shelly asked me to give you this.

0:12:54 > 0:12:57- You left it in the cafe. - That's the very thing
