0:02:13 > 0:02:17- It's a bit dirty and it's very whiffy.- I'll say.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20Now then, young Salty, see that seagull up there,

0:03:43 > 0:03:46What a good idea! We will see you later, Em.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48Come along, Salty.

0:03:48 > 0:03:52Right, time to wash that old thing.

0:04:02 > 0:04:08There she is, the Rainbow. What have you got for us today, my dear?

0:04:08 > 0:04:10SHIP'S HORN SOUNDS

0:04:10 > 0:04:15- Hey-hey. Come on, Salty. - HE HUMS A TUNE

0:04:15 > 0:04:17Here we are.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27Good girl, Salty, in your bed, go on, that's it.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30You curl up in there.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33And we won't mention smelly blankets, will we, heh?

0:04:33 > 0:04:35HE CHUCKLES

0:04:35 > 0:04:40Although I do remember the last time your blanket was really stinky.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42Oh! Do you? Poo!

0:04:42 > 0:04:46Right, let me get the comfortable and I'll tell you the story.

0:04:46 > 0:04:48Ah, yes, Salty,

0:04:48 > 0:04:51this'll make your whiskers whiffle, this one will.

0:04:51 > 0:04:55Once upon a twinkly time, the Rainbow set off from Staithes,

0:04:55 > 0:05:00waved goodbye to Whitby and disappeared over the horizon.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02It was a breezy day

0:05:02 > 0:05:05and a rather whiffy smell was wafting on the wind. Poo!

0:05:05 > 0:05:10Despite that, Salty and I started to sing.

0:05:10 > 0:05:14# Just Salty dog and me Upon the briny sea

0:05:14 > 0:05:16# The wind is keen The waves are high

0:05:16 > 0:05:19# There isn't a cloud up in the sky

0:05:19 > 0:05:23# And although something's stinking At least we're not sinking

0:05:23 > 0:05:26# Just Salty Dog and me # Hey!

0:05:26 > 0:05:31"Right, Salty," I said, "let's find out what's causing that smell

0:05:31 > 0:05:33"and throw it overboard."

0:05:33 > 0:05:36I followed the smell, all around the deck

0:05:36 > 0:05:40and it led me to Salty's bed and Salty's blanket.

0:05:40 > 0:05:41SALTY WHIMPERS

0:05:41 > 0:05:45Now, Salty's blanket is her favourite thing.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49But, sometimes, it gets very whiffy and it needs to be washed.

0:05:49 > 0:05:53"Come on," I said, "let's dunk it in the sea."

0:05:53 > 0:05:55I tied the blanket to a rope

0:05:55 > 0:05:59and threw it overboard, where it swished through the waves

0:05:59 > 0:06:01as the ship skimmed along.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03Things were fine for a while,

0:06:03 > 0:06:07when, suddenly, I heard the ship's emergency bell ringing.

0:06:07 > 0:06:11Clang, clang, clang! And it was Salty who was ringing it.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13BELL RINGS

0:06:13 > 0:06:15"What is the matter, Salty, my girl?" I said.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19- IMITATES SALTY HOWLING - "Look," she howled.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22And she pointed a paw to the stern.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26Oh, dearie me, there was the rope, swishing through the water,

0:06:26 > 0:06:29but there was no blanket tied to it.

0:06:29 > 0:06:33Salty's blanket had gone. "Don't panic," I said.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36"We will just have to go and look for it."

0:06:36 > 0:06:40And before you could say "scuttling spider crabs",

0:06:40 > 0:06:42we were under the sea.

0:06:42 > 0:06:46Well, we hadn't gone far when Mr and Mrs Cod swam up to us.

0:06:46 > 0:06:50"Ask if they've come to help us with the tug-of-war, Harold,"

0:06:50 > 0:06:53said Mrs Cod. "Yes, dear," said Mr Cod.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56But before he could say another word,

0:06:56 > 0:06:58Mrs Cod nudged me with her nose.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01"You can be the referee," she told me.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04"And you, she said, rolling her eyes at Salty,

0:07:04 > 0:07:07"you can help to pull the rope."

0:07:07 > 0:07:10"Actually, we're looking for a blanket," I said.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12"You haven't seen it, have you?"

0:07:12 > 0:07:17"Have we seen a blanket, Harold?" Mrs Cod asked her husband.

0:07:17 > 0:07:19Mr Cod said, "Yes, dear."

0:07:19 > 0:07:22"I think, hm, we've seen it somewhere," said Mrs Cod.

0:07:22 > 0:07:27"There isn't time to look for it. The tug-of-war is about to begin."

0:07:27 > 0:07:30Before we knew it, I was on the referee's spot

0:07:30 > 0:07:34and Salty was standing in line behind the tigerfish.

0:07:34 > 0:07:39Soon, lots of other sea creatures had taken their places behind Salty.

0:07:39 > 0:07:43Angela, the anglerfish, she came with her lantern dangling.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46Nicola the pufferfish, she arrived.

0:07:46 > 0:07:50She puffed herself up to her fullest size.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54Next came Percy, the pipefish, and the two blobfish.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57And even a couple of sea horses bobbed up

0:07:57 > 0:07:59and took their places in the line.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03The tigerfish called out, "We can't win,

0:08:03 > 0:08:06"we do this every year and every year, we lose."

0:08:06 > 0:08:12Well, Salty and I, we were a little surprised. "Why is that?" I asked.

0:08:12 > 0:08:17"Because we are playing against him," said the tigerfish,

0:08:17 > 0:08:21pointing at a huge creature that was approaching.

0:08:21 > 0:08:26"Blistering barnacles," I exclaimed. "It's Bluey the blue whale."

0:08:26 > 0:08:31"Hello, everyone," he called, swishing his enormous tail,

0:08:31 > 0:08:34"lovely to see you again."

0:08:34 > 0:08:37Well, Salty buried her head in her paws.

0:08:37 > 0:08:42"It's not fair," she whined, "we'll never win, we don't have a chance."

0:08:42 > 0:08:45"Remember, the one left holding the rope

0:08:45 > 0:08:48"wins the tug-of-war trophy," said Mrs Cod.

0:08:48 > 0:08:52"Right, Harold, give the referee the hooter."

0:08:52 > 0:08:56Mr Cod swam up to me with a little horn.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58And I blew it.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04And the tug-of-war began.

0:09:04 > 0:09:07Everyone picked up the rope and started to pull.

0:09:07 > 0:09:12"Come on," cried the tigerfish. "Heave-ho!"

0:09:14 > 0:09:18But there was something unusual about the rope.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21It didn't really look very rope-like.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24It was slightly woollier than a rope should be

0:09:24 > 0:09:28and it was a little, hm, smelly.

0:09:28 > 0:09:33Salty gave the rope a sniff and let out a howl.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35HE IMITATES SALTY HOWLING

0:09:35 > 0:09:39"It's not a rope, it's my blanket! It must have come loose

0:09:39 > 0:09:44"when we were dragging it and then it sank to the bottom of the sea.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47"That's why the tug-of-war team have it now."

0:09:48 > 0:09:51So Salty started to pull extra hard.

0:09:51 > 0:09:55She wasn't worried about winning the tug-of-war trophy,

0:09:55 > 0:10:00but she was worried that Bluey the whale might keep her blanket.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03So, she started tugging.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06"Heave-ho, heave-ho."

0:10:06 > 0:10:10"I can't keep going," cried Angela, the anglerfish,

0:10:10 > 0:10:12"my strength has run out."

0:10:12 > 0:10:16"Us, too, said the two blobfish and they let go.

0:10:16 > 0:10:20"Heave-ho! Heave-ho!"

0:10:20 > 0:10:23"My fins ache, they feel like they are going to fall off,"

0:10:23 > 0:10:27cried the tigerfish. "I'm going to have to let go, too."

0:10:27 > 0:10:29Everyone was tiring.

0:10:29 > 0:10:34Bluey the whale had such a powerful grip.

0:10:34 > 0:10:40And soon, it was only Salty who was left tugging at the blanket.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42"Come on, Salty, you can do it," I cried.

0:10:42 > 0:10:47"Come on, heave-ho, hold on to your blanket. Don't let go!

0:10:47 > 0:10:49"Good girl, go on!"

0:10:49 > 0:10:51Bluey the whale was super-strong,

0:10:51 > 0:10:55but Salty just wouldn't give up on her blanket,

0:10:55 > 0:10:58for dogs are very attached to their blankets,

0:10:58 > 0:11:00as you probably know.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04And with one more enormous tug, she pulled it free

0:11:04 > 0:11:06from Bluey's grip.

0:11:06 > 0:11:11"Hurray! We have a winner," I cried.

0:11:11 > 0:11:13"Salty's won the tug-of-war."

0:11:13 > 0:11:16"Well done, cried Bluey, "what fun.

0:11:16 > 0:11:21"Who'd have thought that a little dog would be so strong?"

0:11:21 > 0:11:24"Congratulations," said Mrs Cod.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27And she gave Salty the tug-of-war trophy.

0:11:27 > 0:11:31Salty said that her underwater friends could keep the trophy,

0:11:31 > 0:11:35all she wanted was her blanket.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38"Your blanket?" said Mrs Cod.

0:11:38 > 0:11:42"Well, I never. I told you it was strange rope, didn't I, Harold?"

0:11:42 > 0:11:46Mr Cod nodded. "Yes, dear," he said.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48I turned to Salty.

0:11:48 > 0:11:52"Time to be getting home now," Salty, my girl, I said.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55Before you could say "jiggling jellyfish",

0:11:55 > 0:11:58Salty and I were back on board the Rainbow.

0:11:58 > 0:12:03"You know, I never knew you were so strong, Salty," I chuckled.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06- After all that time in the water... - HE SNIFFS

0:12:06 > 0:12:10..cor, your blanket isn't stinking any more!

0:12:10 > 0:12:13- Is it? No. - HE CHUCKLES

0:12:13 > 0:12:18Well, we both laughed as we set our course for Staithes and home.

0:12:27 > 0:12:31Do you like that story, Salty? All true, of course!

0:12:31 > 0:12:33Mind you, my stories always are.

0:12:33 > 0:12:35HE CHUCKLES

0:12:35 > 0:12:40Oh, look! See that?

0:12:40 > 0:12:41Come on.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51Listen, Salty, I've got a confession to make.

0:12:51 > 0:12:55While we were away, Emily washed your blanket.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57HE LAUGHS

0:12:57 > 0:12:59That's not it, is it?

0:12:59 > 0:13:03Oh, no. Oh, no. Oh, no.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06Oh, that's not your blanket. That's too small.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09It must have shrunk in the wash.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12Well, at least it will be easy to carry around

0:13:12 > 0:13:14and probably smell a lot better.

0:13:14 > 0:13:18- Hello, you two.- Hello. - You all right?- Well...

0:13:18 > 0:13:23I've washed the blanket and it's dry, too. Here you are, Salty.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26Well, what's that?

0:13:26 > 0:13:29It's one of my tea towels, why do you ask?

0:13:29 > 0:13:34For a minute, I thought it was Salty's blanket, shrunk in the wash.

0:13:34 > 0:13:38I wouldn't shrink Salty's blanket! I know how precious it is.

0:13:38 > 0:13:42What a relief! There you are, Salty. Look at that. Yes.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45It smells lovely. You're a very lucky dog.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48Say thank you to Ems. That's it.

0:13:48 > 0:13:51- You know, you saved the day, you have.- My pleasure.- Thank you.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55- Come on, Salty. Thanks again, Em.- Bye now!- Bye-bye.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58We were getting really worried about that!
