0:03:26 > 0:03:29Whoops-a-daisy, Ernie. Steady now.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32Come on, Salty, back to the Rainbow. Oh, dear.

0:03:41 > 0:03:46There she is. The Rainbow. What have you got for us today, my dear?

0:03:46 > 0:03:47HOOTER

0:03:49 > 0:03:50Hey, come on, Salty.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54HE HUMS

0:03:54 > 0:03:56Here we are.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07Come on, Salty, go in your bed. Good girl.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10You curl up in there while I find this moon lantern.

0:04:10 > 0:04:14There it is. There you are!

0:04:14 > 0:04:17Here, Ernie's certainly got his hands full with those eggs.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19Hoo-hoo!

0:04:19 > 0:04:22Do you know what? This moon lantern

0:04:22 > 0:04:27makes me recall an adventure we had involving eggs. Do you remember?

0:04:27 > 0:04:33Yes. Let me get comfortable and I'll tell you the story.

0:04:33 > 0:04:38Oh, yes, Salty. This will make your whiskers whiffle, this one will.

0:04:38 > 0:04:43Once upon a twinkly time, the Rainbow set off from Staithes,

0:04:43 > 0:04:48waved goodbye to Whitby and disappeared over the horizon.

0:04:48 > 0:04:52We sailed into the night and as we sailed, we sang.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55- # Just Salty Dog and me - HOOTER

0:04:55 > 0:04:57- # Upon the briny sea - HOOTER

0:04:57 > 0:05:00# The moon is round and full tonight

0:05:00 > 0:05:02# It's casting out a silvery light

0:05:02 > 0:05:06# And the waves seem to glimmer and sparkle and shimmer

0:05:06 > 0:05:08# For Salty Dog and me. #

0:05:08 > 0:05:09HOOTER

0:05:09 > 0:05:14On the horizon we spied the silvery blue silhouette of a ship.

0:05:14 > 0:05:19"Uh-oh," I cried. "That looks to me like the Hurly-Burly."

0:05:19 > 0:05:23Now, in case you don't already know, the Hurly-Burly is a pirate ship

0:05:23 > 0:05:29and it belongs to Kitty Cutlass, the trickiest pirate to sail the seas.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32"Ahoy, me old diamonds!" cried Kitty,

0:05:32 > 0:05:35bringing the Hurly-Burly up alongside.

0:05:35 > 0:05:40"And what might you two be doing on this beautiful evening?"

0:05:40 > 0:05:45"Well, Kitty, we were thinking of going for an underwater walk,"

0:05:45 > 0:05:46says I.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49"I'm coming, too," cried Kitty,

0:05:49 > 0:05:53"because I've heard that there are stars at the bottom of the sea

0:05:53 > 0:05:55"and I want to find them."

0:05:55 > 0:05:59And before you could say, "Limboing lobsters,"

0:05:59 > 0:06:01we were all under the waves.

0:06:01 > 0:06:06Well, as we wandered along, a creature swam over.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09She had a huge leathery body

0:06:09 > 0:06:12that was shaped like a giant bicycle helmet

0:06:12 > 0:06:16and her front flippers were very large.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19"I am a leatherback turtle," she told us.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22"Nice to meet you," I said.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26"Kitty here has heard that there are stars at the bottom of the sea,

0:06:26 > 0:06:28"so we thought we'd try and find some."

0:06:28 > 0:06:31"Oh, yes," said the turtle.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35"There are lots of stars I could show you but I can't be too long.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39"I've laid my eggs on an island not far from here."

0:06:39 > 0:06:42Salty didn't know that turtles laid eggs.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45"Oh, we do," replied the turtle.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49"They're buried safely in the sand but they'll be hatching soon.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52"Then my baby turtles find their way to the sea

0:06:52 > 0:06:54"by the light of the moon."

0:06:55 > 0:06:58"How many eggs have you laid?" I asked.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02"127," replied the turtle.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05"Turtles have big families," said Salty.

0:07:05 > 0:07:10"Come on, come on, we're supposed to be searching for stars," said Kitty.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14We soon found ourselves in an underwater jungly place

0:07:14 > 0:07:17where a huge mountain loomed

0:07:17 > 0:07:21and strange, frondy plants waggled and waved in the water.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24"Look at that mountain," I said.

0:07:24 > 0:07:29"It's a volcano, actually," said the turtle. "Isn't it magnificent?"

0:07:29 > 0:07:33We all stopped to admire it for it was indeed magnificent.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36"Your sea stars are just here," said the turtle,

0:07:36 > 0:07:39pointing a flipper at a large rock.

0:07:39 > 0:07:42"Oh, tickle me dimples! Look how many there are,"

0:07:42 > 0:07:44cried Kitty greedily.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47And, sure enough, the rock was covered

0:07:47 > 0:07:51in crowds of different-coloured, beautiful, bumpy stars.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53"Treasure!" cried Kitty

0:07:53 > 0:07:57and she tried to pick up one of the stars. But...

0:07:57 > 0:08:00"Ow!" The star let out a squeal.

0:08:00 > 0:08:05"Take your hands off me at once!" it cried.

0:08:05 > 0:08:09Well, Kitty, she jumped back in surprise.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12"I thought you were precious treasure," she said.

0:08:12 > 0:08:16"I'm a starfish," said the starfish crossly.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18Kitty looked very hot and bothered.

0:08:18 > 0:08:23"Sorry I disturbed you. I won't do it again," she said, blushing.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26But before Kitty could get any more flustered,

0:08:26 > 0:08:30we all felt an enormous rumble

0:08:30 > 0:08:34and the whole of the sea bed seemed to tremble.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37"Ooooh!" howled Salty.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39"What's that?"

0:08:39 > 0:08:43"Goodness!" cried the turtle. "The volcano is erupting."

0:08:43 > 0:08:45"Quick, follow me."

0:08:45 > 0:08:49So we all swam off at top speed up to the surface of the waves

0:08:49 > 0:08:51and into a sandy bay.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55"It's all right, we'll be safe here," said the turtle.

0:08:55 > 0:08:59"This is the island where I buried my eggs."

0:08:59 > 0:09:01Well, we were just in time.

0:09:01 > 0:09:06In the distance, we saw a huge orange-grey plume

0:09:06 > 0:09:07rising from the waves.

0:09:07 > 0:09:11The volcano was erupting all right.

0:09:11 > 0:09:15"Thank you for saving us," I told the turtle.

0:09:15 > 0:09:20And we all sat down on the sand to watch the cloud of volcano ashes

0:09:20 > 0:09:23curling upwards out of the sea.

0:09:23 > 0:09:29As we looked across the beach, we suddenly saw the sand moving.

0:09:29 > 0:09:33"Uh-oh!" cried the turtle. "My eggs are hatching."

0:09:33 > 0:09:38As she spoke, the cloud of smoke and ashes from the volcano

0:09:38 > 0:09:40curled into the sky and covered the moon.

0:09:40 > 0:09:44It started getting darker, but if we squinted,

0:09:44 > 0:09:48we could just see that the baby turtles had hatched

0:09:48 > 0:09:53from their buried eggs and were digging themselves out of the sand.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55"Oh, no!" said the turtle in a panic.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58"The moon is hidden behind that dusty cloud

0:09:58 > 0:10:03"and it's too dark for my babies to find the sea. What do I do?"

0:10:03 > 0:10:08Then Salty's whiskers whiffled. She was having one of her bright ideas.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10SHE BARKS

0:10:10 > 0:10:14She pointed her paw to the Rainbow, which was anchored in the distance.

0:10:14 > 0:10:21"Salty, you're a genius," I cried. "We need to light the moon lantern."

0:10:21 > 0:10:22But we had to be quick

0:10:22 > 0:10:27for the turtle babies were starting to appear from the sand.

0:10:27 > 0:10:31"You'll never be able to swim to your ship in time," said Kitty.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33"Too far away."

0:10:33 > 0:10:37"I think my friends can help," said the turtle.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39We went to the water's edge

0:10:39 > 0:10:41and the turtle called out to all her friends.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45"Leatherback turtles, wherever you are, I need your help.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48"Please form a path."

0:10:48 > 0:10:53And soon the sea was teeming with leatherback turtles.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56They all formed a path, like stepping stones, from the beach

0:10:56 > 0:10:59right across the sea to the Rainbow.

0:10:59 > 0:11:03"Quick!" cried the turtles. "Use our backs as stepping stones.

0:11:03 > 0:11:04"We're ever so strong."

0:11:04 > 0:11:06So he did.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09Hoppity, skippity, quickity, quickity. Heh!

0:11:09 > 0:11:13And before we knew it, we were back aboard the Rainbow. Oh!

0:11:13 > 0:11:18"Right, Salty," says I, "let's light the moon lantern."

0:11:18 > 0:11:22Well, in a matter of seconds, the moon lantern had flickered into life

0:11:22 > 0:11:28and it gave out a huge silvery white light, which sparkled on the sea.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31The baby turtles saw the twinkling waves

0:11:31 > 0:11:34and made their way safely to the sea.

0:11:34 > 0:11:38"Thank you for saving my babies," called the turtle happily.

0:11:38 > 0:11:42"You're welcome," we said. "Congratulations.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44"You've got a lovely family.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46"Look at them all."

0:11:46 > 0:11:51"Tickle me dimples. That was an adventure!" cried Kitty

0:11:51 > 0:11:55as she jumped back on board the Hurly-Burly and sailed away.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59"Come on, Salty, my girl," I said, "we'd better get going.

0:11:59 > 0:12:04"That's more than enough excitement for one night."

0:12:04 > 0:12:08So, with the silvery light of our moon lantern to guide us,

0:12:08 > 0:12:11we sailed all the way home.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20Did you like that story, Salty? Yeah?

0:12:20 > 0:12:24All true, of course. Mind you, my stories always are.

0:12:24 > 0:12:26HE CHUCKLES

0:12:26 > 0:12:27Oh! Look.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30Oh, dear.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32Come on.

0:12:42 > 0:12:47- Oh, hello, Jack, Salty.- How did you get on with the egg delivery?

0:12:47 > 0:12:50All the eggs were delivered carefully and safely,

0:12:50 > 0:12:52without any mishaps whatsoever.

0:12:52 > 0:12:56- Was Sam pleased to get them? - Were you pleased to get the eggs?

0:12:56 > 0:12:59- Lovely, Ernie.- Just... - What the doctor ordered.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02- No, no. Just one problem. - What's that, then, Ernie?

0:13:02 > 0:13:04Well, Sam's oven wasn't working

0:13:04 > 0:13:09so we have to take the eggs down to Shelly's caff to have them cooked.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12- It's a smashing idea. - It certainly is that.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14- Off we go, Sam.- Right you are.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18Dustbin!

0:13:18 > 0:13:20Football!

0:13:20 > 0:13:22- Elephant!- Elephant?

0:13:22 > 0:13:24Ha-ha! That's what Jack said.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26ALL LAUGH

0:13:26 > 0:13:28- Pavement.- Oh!

0:13:29 > 0:13:31Oh, dear.

0:13:31 > 0:13:33We might have missed our fish supper

0:13:33 > 0:13:38but I think there will be scrambled eggs at the Mermaid Cafe tonight.

0:13:38 > 0:13:40Come on, Salty. Oh, dear me!

0:13:44 > 0:13:46Well, Salty, that's it for today.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49We'll see all our friends again next time.

0:13:50 > 0:13:54Oh, and we'll see YOU next time as well. Bye-bye.

0:13:54 > 0:13:57Come on, girl.
