0:02:15 > 0:02:18Oh, Jack. What are you going to do with that lot?

0:02:21 > 0:02:24- Not yours, are they?- No! Oh, and a shopping bag, too!

0:02:55 > 0:02:58I wondered whose they were. Are you all right?

0:02:58 > 0:03:02SIGHS Oh, Jack, I've had a bit of a shock.

0:03:02 > 0:03:06I'd done all my grocery shopping, and I'd stopped for a snack,

0:03:06 > 0:03:11so I reached in my bag for a banana, and... Oh! It was horrible!

0:03:11 > 0:03:13- Horrible?- Yes!

0:03:13 > 0:03:15My hand felt something...hairy.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19Well, I was so surprised I threw the bag into the air

0:03:19 > 0:03:21and the bananas flew everywhere!

0:03:21 > 0:03:25Then I dashed off home as quickly as I could.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28Well, what was it that scared you so much?

0:03:28 > 0:03:31Some sort of nasty, hairy creature.

0:03:31 > 0:03:36- You didn't see it, did you?- No, no. - It must've escaped.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39- Emily and I will hunt for it in the bushes.- Right.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48- Hopefully!- Come on, Salty.

0:03:48 > 0:03:52Wasn't you, was it? You're a hairy creature.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03There she is! The Rainbow.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05What have you got for us today, my dear?

0:04:05 > 0:04:08FOGHORN

0:04:08 > 0:04:10Come on, Salty.

0:04:21 > 0:04:26Good girl, Salty. Go in your bed. Good girl. You curl up there.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28And don't distract me.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31Funny finding all those bananas, eh?

0:04:31 > 0:04:35Wasn't there a time we got involved with some bananas?

0:04:35 > 0:04:38I remember. Let me get comfortable...

0:04:38 > 0:04:41and I'll tell you the story.

0:04:42 > 0:04:46Once upon a twinkly time, the Rainbow set off from Staithes,

0:04:46 > 0:04:51waved goodbye to Whitby, and disappeared over the horizon.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53And as we sailed, we sang.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55# We're Salty Dog and me

0:04:55 > 0:04:58# Upon the briny sea

0:04:58 > 0:05:00# The waves are calm The wind is light

0:05:00 > 0:05:02# We're working up an appetite

0:05:02 > 0:05:06# Soon we'll cast anchor and open the hamper

0:05:06 > 0:05:08# Just Salty Dog and me. #

0:05:08 > 0:05:12It was snack time, so I fetched my trusty telescope

0:05:12 > 0:05:15and scanned the horizon.

0:05:15 > 0:05:20And in the distance I saw an island with trees on it.

0:05:20 > 0:05:25And where there are trees, there's sure to be delicious fruit.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28"Snacks ahoy, Salty," I cried.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30So we set our course for the island.

0:05:30 > 0:05:35And when we were as close as a stone's throw, we dropped anchor.

0:05:35 > 0:05:39"Isn't it nice here, Salty?" I said as we strolled along the beach.

0:05:39 > 0:05:44And then I spotted a palm tree full of coconuts. Look at that!

0:05:44 > 0:05:49"Here's something to eat! "Coconuts! I cried. "My favourite."

0:05:49 > 0:05:54Salty said she didn't like coconuts, she only liked bananas.

0:05:54 > 0:05:59And just then I spotted something unusual peering down at me

0:05:59 > 0:06:01through the leaves.

0:06:01 > 0:06:06It was small and hairy with huge, shiny horns,

0:06:06 > 0:06:08and it was jumping about and chattering.

0:06:08 > 0:06:14"Look, I think we may've discovered a rare beast, Salty," I whispered.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17Salty said she hoped that it was friendly.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20"I'll try talking to it," I said.

0:06:20 > 0:06:24- CLEARS THROAT - I put on my politest voice.

0:06:24 > 0:06:29"Hello. I'm Jack and this is Salty," said I.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32"We've forgotten our picnic hamper.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35"Could I eat one of your coconuts?"

0:06:35 > 0:06:38The creature put its head on one side for a moment

0:06:38 > 0:06:42- and then it let out a loud shriek... - SHRIEK!

0:06:42 > 0:06:44..and threw down a coconut!

0:06:46 > 0:06:50"Thank you very much," I said. "Much appreciated, I'm sure."

0:06:50 > 0:06:52We sat down in the shade of the tree

0:06:52 > 0:06:55and I was just about to eat the coconut

0:06:55 > 0:06:59when a strange man came stomping up the beach towards us.

0:06:59 > 0:07:03He was very big and as hairy as a coconut shell.

0:07:03 > 0:07:08"Greetings," he said, in a booming voice. "I am Erik the Viking."

0:07:08 > 0:07:11"Well, very nice to meet you," I said.

0:07:11 > 0:07:15I'd never met a Viking before and I wasn't sure what to say.

0:07:15 > 0:07:21"Er, you having a good day?" "No," said Erik. "I am not.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24"I took off my helmet to go for a swim

0:07:24 > 0:07:26"but it seems to have disappeared."

0:07:26 > 0:07:30"Have you seen it?" Well, Salty and I shook our heads.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33We definitely had not seen a Viking's helmet.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36"But I must find it," said Erik sadly.

0:07:36 > 0:07:41"I am on my way to a huge Viking feast that lasts for weeks.

0:07:41 > 0:07:43"And weeks. And weeks.

0:07:43 > 0:07:47"But they won't let me in if I don't have my helmet."

0:07:47 > 0:07:52At that moment, another coconut came flying down from the tree.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55"Who threw that?" said the Viking crossly.

0:07:55 > 0:07:57He squinted up into the tree

0:07:57 > 0:08:01and he saw the unusual creature with the shiny horns.

0:08:01 > 0:08:06"Ah!" I said. "I think it was that funny-looking beast with the horns.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09"It throws us coconuts. It's ever so kind."

0:08:09 > 0:08:12"That's not a funny-looking beast with horns,

0:08:12 > 0:08:16"it's a monkey with my helmet on!" said the Viking.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19Old Salty and I peered up at the creature

0:08:19 > 0:08:24and we couldn't help chuckling, for it was, indeed, a monkey!

0:08:24 > 0:08:27"Give me back my helmet!" shouted the Viking.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30He waved his fist at the monkey.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32And the monkey chattered

0:08:32 > 0:08:35and waved its fist back at the Viking!

0:08:35 > 0:08:40"I want my helmet back, you bow-legged branch-buckler!"

0:08:40 > 0:08:43boomed the Viking, and he stamped his feet.

0:08:43 > 0:08:49Well, the monkey jumped up and down on the branch, copying him stamping!

0:08:49 > 0:08:52But it didn't seem to want to part with the helmet!

0:08:52 > 0:08:55"Stinkpots!" said the Viking.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58"I'll never get my helmet back at this rate."

0:08:58 > 0:09:02"It's definitely a problem," I said, scratching my chin.

0:09:02 > 0:09:06The monkey scratched his chin, too. "Hm," I said.

0:09:06 > 0:09:12"That monkey seems to be copying everything we do.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15"Perhaps, if I throw my hat down,

0:09:15 > 0:09:19"the monkey will throw down your helmet."

0:09:19 > 0:09:23"Maybe," said the Viking, smiling hopefully.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25But the monkey was watching us

0:09:25 > 0:09:28through the leaves with its shiny button-eyes.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30"Here goes," I said.

0:09:30 > 0:09:34And I took off my cap... and I threw it down.

0:09:34 > 0:09:39And then would you believe it... the monkey took off the helmet

0:09:39 > 0:09:41and - yes! - it threw it down.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44"Oh, thank goodness!" cried Erik.

0:09:44 > 0:09:46"Your plan worked!"

0:09:46 > 0:09:52But, oh dear - the helmet was completely broken.

0:09:52 > 0:09:57Erik put his head in his hands - "Oh, no!" he cried.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00"You can't go to the Viking feast with a broken helmet,

0:10:00 > 0:10:05"it's not allowed," he groaned. "What am I going to do?"

0:10:05 > 0:10:10The monkey climbed down from the tree and sat down next to Erik.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13It put its head in its little monkey hands

0:10:13 > 0:10:16and looked just as upset as Erik.

0:10:16 > 0:10:20"Can you stop copying me now? It's getting annoying,"

0:10:20 > 0:10:23said the Viking crossly.

0:10:23 > 0:10:27"I don't think the monkey meant to break your helmet," I said.

0:10:27 > 0:10:31"Perhaps we could have our own feast here?"

0:10:31 > 0:10:35Salty said it was not much of a feast, as there were only coconuts.

0:10:35 > 0:10:40But then, the monkey scampered off and seconds later,

0:10:40 > 0:10:43something landed with a thump at our feet.

0:10:43 > 0:10:45Ah! It was a bug bunch of bananas!

0:10:45 > 0:10:50"Hey, look, Salty," I laughed. "Bananas! Your favourite!"

0:10:50 > 0:10:54So, Salty feasted on delicious bananas,

0:10:54 > 0:10:58and the Viking and I ate scrumptious coconuts.

0:10:58 > 0:11:04"It's a pity there isn't a tree that grows helmets," said Erik sadly.

0:11:04 > 0:11:09And then...Salty's whiskers whiffled.

0:11:09 > 0:11:13"She's having one of her bright ideas," I whispered to the Viking.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17We watched as Salty took two of the bananas

0:11:17 > 0:11:21and fixed them to half a coconut shell.

0:11:21 > 0:11:26"Salty, you are a genius, my girl!" I said.

0:11:26 > 0:11:30For she had made the Viking a new helmet!

0:11:30 > 0:11:33"Amazing!" he said, trying it on.

0:11:33 > 0:11:38"It's much better than my old helmet. Now I can go to my feast.

0:11:38 > 0:11:40"Thank you!"

0:11:40 > 0:11:43Well, it was time for us to go.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46"Have a lovely time at your feast," we told the Viking.

0:11:46 > 0:11:51"And thank you, monkey, for sharing your fruity snacks.

0:11:51 > 0:11:53"We're not hungry any more."

0:11:53 > 0:11:59And so with our tummies full and our sights set on the horizon,

0:11:59 > 0:12:02we clambered back aboard the Rainbow

0:12:02 > 0:12:05and sailed for Staithes and home.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08Had a lovely letter from the Viking.

0:12:08 > 0:12:12Said he had a smashing party. Yes. Hm. And lots of bananas.

0:12:18 > 0:12:22You like that story, Salty? All true, of course.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25Mind you, my stories always are.

0:12:25 > 0:12:27CHUCKLES

0:12:31 > 0:12:32Go on, girl.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37Oh, hello, Miss Bowline-Hitch.

0:12:37 > 0:12:41I was just wondering if you'd managed to find

0:12:41 > 0:12:45- the hairy beast that gave you such a shock earlier.- I'm afraid not.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47Emily and I looked everywhere,

0:12:47 > 0:12:50but there was no sign of a hairy beast anywhere.

0:12:50 > 0:12:54- I suppose you think I imagined it. - No, no, not at all.

0:12:54 > 0:12:57No, I was just wondering if you'd looked to see

0:12:57 > 0:13:00if it was still in the shopping bag.

0:13:00 > 0:13:01Well, no, I haven't.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03But I think it's best if you do it.

0:13:03 > 0:13:08- I've already had one shock today. - All right, here goes.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13Ah! Yeah, it's still there. And it's hairy, all right.

0:13:13 > 0:13:16- Salty, you won't like this. - Is it a squirrel?

0:13:16 > 0:13:18- No.- A rabbit?

0:13:18 > 0:13:22- No!- A hairy gorilla?! Er...no.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24No...

0:13:25 > 0:13:27It's a coconut!

0:13:27 > 0:13:29Oh, yes! Yes!

0:13:29 > 0:13:32I did buy a coconut!

0:13:32 > 0:13:35How embarrassing! I must've forgotten all about it!

0:13:35 > 0:13:40The mystery of the hairy creature is solved.

0:13:40 > 0:13:42Thank you, Jack.

0:13:42 > 0:13:46No problem. Come on, time to head home, Salty.

0:13:46 > 0:13:50- Goodbye, you two.- Bye-bye. Come on, Salty. You and me.

0:13:50 > 0:13:53How very embarrassing...! Thank you!
