0:01:41 > 0:01:46- Ah!- Oh, hello, Jack. Hello, Salty!

0:01:46 > 0:01:49How lovely to see you. I was just on my way out.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51Hello, Miss Bowline-Hitch.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54We're checking you're all right after last night.

0:01:54 > 0:01:58- Yes! Wasn't it windy?- Wasn't it, eh? That old wind was howling worse

0:01:58 > 0:02:01than she does when she wants her dinner.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03It whipped away my favourite scarf

0:02:03 > 0:02:07and wound it down the road before I could do a thing about it.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11- Oh, dear!- I've been looking for it all night. You haven't seen it?

0:02:11 > 0:02:16It's dark blue silk with little golden sequined stars.

0:02:16 > 0:02:17No, we haven't.

0:02:17 > 0:02:21- We'll keep an eye out for it, won't we, Salty?- Thank you.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24- PHONE RINGS Oh, I'm in demand.- Oh, yes.

0:02:24 > 0:02:29- Better get going. Busy, busy, busy. - Oh, yes. Busy, busy. Come on, then.

0:02:29 > 0:02:33Come on, Salty. Good girl. That's it. Come on, then.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44Hello, somebody's started work early.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46Hiya, Jack. Salty. Where are you off to?

0:02:46 > 0:02:50To The Rainbow to clear some of them cobwebs away,

0:02:50 > 0:02:53if the wind hasn't done it already.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57- Are you...?- Feeling all right?- No. - Flying a kite?- No, no. Fishing?

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Oh! Oh, yes. For my keys.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04I was fixing this life ring back on, it kept blowing off,

0:03:04 > 0:03:06but then I dropped my keys!

0:03:06 > 0:03:09They've landed down there in a rock pool. Typical!

0:03:09 > 0:03:13- Lucky I've go my bamboo contraption with me.- I like the sound of that.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15It's a nifty bit of kit.

0:03:15 > 0:03:20Basically, a bamboo pole with a bit of string and a hook in the end.

0:03:20 > 0:03:25- I invented it myself. I call it... - A fishing rod.- Well, yes.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28- I suppose it is, really. - Listen, can we help at all?

0:03:28 > 0:03:31Thanks for offering, but I'll be fine.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34Right. I'll see you later. Happy fishing.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37- Come on, Salty. Round here. - See you, Jack.- Bye-bye.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39JACK LAUGHS

0:03:50 > 0:03:53There she is! The Rainbow!

0:03:53 > 0:03:56What have you got for us today, my dear?

0:03:56 > 0:03:58BOAT HORN BLARES

0:03:58 > 0:04:01- HE CHUCKLES - Come on, Salty.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04- HE HUMS - Here we are.

0:04:13 > 0:04:18Good girl. Go in your bed. Go on. That's it, you curl up in there

0:04:18 > 0:04:21while I get rid of some of these cobwebs. I don't know.

0:04:21 > 0:04:26Oh. Look at those keys there.

0:04:26 > 0:04:30I hope Sam manages to fish out those keys.

0:04:30 > 0:04:34You know, keys aren't the sort of thing you usually go fishing for

0:04:34 > 0:04:39and yet I remember once we had to go fishing

0:04:39 > 0:04:42for something even more unusual.

0:04:42 > 0:04:46Yes. Yes, once upon a twinkly time,

0:04:46 > 0:04:49The Rainbow set off from Staithes,

0:04:49 > 0:04:53waved goodbye to Whitby and disappeared over the horizon.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58When night fell, I gazed around me.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01"What a beautiful planet we live on," I said.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04I think this calls for a sing-song.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07# Just Salty Dog and me

0:05:07 > 0:05:09# Upon the briny sea

0:05:09 > 0:05:11# There's no other place we'd rather be

0:05:11 > 0:05:14# When the stars are bright and twinkly

0:05:14 > 0:05:18# We're like two giddy kippers beneath the Big Dipper

0:05:18 > 0:05:21# Just Salty Dog and me! #

0:05:21 > 0:05:23Good girl.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25All that singing made us hungry,

0:05:25 > 0:05:29so out came the cheese sandwiches and the jam tarts.

0:05:29 > 0:05:33Ooh, our favourites! Not for Salty, though. Dog biscuits for her.

0:05:33 > 0:05:35And just then,

0:05:35 > 0:05:39I noticed a star that twinkled brighter than all the others.

0:05:39 > 0:05:43"Look, Salty! That's the brightest star in the sky," I said.

0:05:43 > 0:05:48"And guess what it's called. Sirius, which means the Dog Star."

0:05:48 > 0:05:52Ha-ha! But as we were happily gazing, the wind came

0:05:52 > 0:05:57and it brought the clouds, which covered up the stars.

0:05:57 > 0:06:01"I hope we're not going to have one of those sneaky-uppy storms

0:06:01 > 0:06:03"that come out of nowhere," I said.

0:06:03 > 0:06:07Salty sniffed the air. A storm was coming all right.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09She could feel it in her whiskers.

0:06:09 > 0:06:13And before we could say, "Jiggling jellyfish,"

0:06:13 > 0:06:15the rain came pattering down.

0:06:15 > 0:06:20"Quick, Salty!" I called. "We'd better put away the jam tarts."

0:06:20 > 0:06:25The wind, oh! It was wild! It whistled and howled

0:06:25 > 0:06:29and whipped up the waves as enormous as elephants,

0:06:29 > 0:06:33as tall as tower blocks, as massive as mountains.

0:06:33 > 0:06:38"Hold on tight, Salty! It's a storm," I called.

0:06:38 > 0:06:42I fought with the wheel, but the Rainbow was blown off course

0:06:42 > 0:06:46until I didn't know my beard from my belly button.

0:06:46 > 0:06:51And then, suddenly, we felt a great jolt. Ooh!

0:06:51 > 0:06:55And the Rainbow's bow, it dipped ever so low.

0:06:55 > 0:06:59"Have we hit the rocks?" I cried. "No," said Salty.

0:06:59 > 0:07:04And she nodded towards the bow. "We've got a visitor."

0:07:04 > 0:07:07That's when I noticed a mass of huge suckered arms

0:07:07 > 0:07:12coiled around the boat and two huge eyes staring at me.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16"Uh-oh," said Salty. "It's Charlie the Giant Squid."

0:07:16 > 0:07:19"We can't have a giant squid suckered onto the boat,

0:07:19 > 0:07:24"it'll sink us," I said. "I'm so sorry," said Charlie.

0:07:24 > 0:07:29"But I'm scared of the storm and I always get clingy when I'm scared."

0:07:29 > 0:07:34"That's all we need. A giant clingy thing with arms like spaghetti,"

0:07:34 > 0:07:40whined Salty. And suddenly we felt another huge jolt. Crash!

0:07:41 > 0:07:45"Have we hit the rocks?" I cried.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48"Yes, this time we have," cried Salty.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52"And I think I've grazed my bottom," said Charlie.

0:07:52 > 0:07:54"Sorry about that," I said.

0:07:54 > 0:07:58"Usually, it's the light from a lighthouse that saves us

0:07:58 > 0:08:03"from breaking up on the rocks not a giant squid's bottom!"

0:08:03 > 0:08:08Just then, someone came rushing up to us in a little boat.

0:08:08 > 0:08:12It was being tossed around on the sea like a teacup.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15"Hello," she called. "Are you all right?"

0:08:15 > 0:08:18"Yes, just," says I.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22"But we could have come a cropper on those rocks."

0:08:22 > 0:08:26"Sorry," said the stranger. "I'm the lighthouse keeper

0:08:26 > 0:08:30"and I'm having a bit of bother with my lighthouse lamp."

0:08:30 > 0:08:33"We didn't even see your lighthouse," I said.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35"Oh, I know," said the lighthouse keeper.

0:08:35 > 0:08:40"The bulb has broken and none of the ships can see where the rocks are.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42"It's a disaster."

0:08:42 > 0:08:46A bolt of lightning crackled over the sea and in its brief light,

0:08:46 > 0:08:51we could see a large ship sailing too close to the rocks.

0:08:51 > 0:08:55"Go away," we yelled. "You'll hit the rocks!"

0:08:55 > 0:08:59But our shouts were just lost in the wind.

0:08:59 > 0:09:03"Stay away from the rocks," cried Charlie the Squid,

0:09:03 > 0:09:05waving his arms wildly.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08And then, Salty's whiskers whiffled.

0:09:08 > 0:09:12She was having one of her bright ideas.

0:09:12 > 0:09:17She grabbed my long-handled fishing net and she handed it to Charlie.

0:09:17 > 0:09:21"Here," she woofed. "You've got the longest arms.

0:09:21 > 0:09:25"It's time to go fishing for stars."

0:09:25 > 0:09:30Charlie unwound himself from the boat and using one of his long

0:09:30 > 0:09:36feeding tentacles, he grabbed the net and he stretched up to the sky.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43And fished behind the clouds.

0:09:43 > 0:09:45It was just like a lucky dip.

0:09:45 > 0:09:50"I've caught something," he cried, pulling down the net,

0:09:50 > 0:09:52which was fluttering.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55"Oh, that's not a star," said the lighthouse keeper.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58"It's a seagull."

0:09:58 > 0:10:03"Sorry," said Charlie. And the seagull flew off very cross.

0:10:03 > 0:10:04Well, he tried again.

0:10:04 > 0:10:08And before too long, he'd caught something else -

0:10:08 > 0:10:11all shaped like a diamond, with a long tail.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14"That isn't a star, that's a kite," I said.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17"It's very nice but it isn't very bright."

0:10:17 > 0:10:21Meanwhile, the large ship was getting closer to the rocks.

0:10:21 > 0:10:24"Quick!" cried the lighthouse keeper.

0:10:24 > 0:10:28So Charlie the Squid, he tried again.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33This time, he caught a fabulous dazzling thing.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38It was Sirius, the Dog Star.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41"Golly," I said. "That's a beauty!"

0:10:41 > 0:10:47And Charlie held up the star and it lit up all the rocks all around.

0:10:47 > 0:10:51And now the large ship could see how close it was to the rocks

0:10:51 > 0:10:54and it turned back just in time.

0:10:54 > 0:10:59Ho! "You're a hero," we told Charlie.

0:10:59 > 0:11:04"It was Salty's idea," he said shyly.

0:11:04 > 0:11:10That fabulous giant tentacled beast held up the star for a long

0:11:10 > 0:11:15time while the lighthouse keeper fixed the light.

0:11:15 > 0:11:19"You make a wonderful lighthouse," said the lighthouse keeper.

0:11:19 > 0:11:24So the storm passed and just as the sun was rising,

0:11:24 > 0:11:30we thanked the star and we put it back in the sky.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32"You were amazing," I told Charlie.

0:11:32 > 0:11:36"Let's have a jam tart to celebrate."

0:11:36 > 0:11:41And then off he swam back to the deepest darkest depths of the ocean.

0:11:43 > 0:11:47Well, Salty, that was a picnic to remember, I said. Wasn't it?

0:11:47 > 0:11:49Eh? Ha-ha!

0:11:49 > 0:11:54And we sailed off happily home to Staithes,

0:11:54 > 0:11:58and some more jam tarts. Ho-ho!

0:12:04 > 0:12:08Did you like that story, Salty? All true, of course.

0:12:08 > 0:12:13Mind you, my stories always are. Ho-ho!

0:12:13 > 0:12:15Oh, look.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19Come on.

0:12:24 > 0:12:26Ho-ho-ho!

0:12:29 > 0:12:31Have you caught any keys yet?

0:12:31 > 0:12:35Not yet, Jack. But I've caught plenty of seaweed.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38- Just going to give it another go. - Right.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41Oh! Wait! Wait...

0:12:41 > 0:12:44- What's that sparkling?- Oh!

0:12:44 > 0:12:46Oh, you might just be in luck.

0:12:46 > 0:12:49Not sure it's my keys, but it looks like treasure.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51I think I've caught some stars!

0:12:51 > 0:12:55Sequin stars. It's Miss Bowline-Hitch's scarf.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58It's a bit soggy, but still it'll dry out.

0:12:58 > 0:13:03Looks like something's tangled up inside. My keys!

0:13:03 > 0:13:06- Brilliant!- Ha-ha! That's not a bad morning's fishing.

0:13:06 > 0:13:11We'd better head off and give this back to Miss Bowline-Hitch.

0:13:11 > 0:13:15- She will be tickled...- With an enormous feather duster.- No, pink.

0:13:15 > 0:13:19- She'll be tickled pink! - Good. Well, back to work for me.

0:13:19 > 0:13:23- See you later, then. - See you soon, Jack.- Come on, you.

0:13:30 > 0:13:36Well, Salty, that's it today. We'll see all our friends again next time.

0:13:36 > 0:13:40Oh. And we'll see you next time as well.

0:13:40 > 0:13:42Bye-bye!

0:13:42 > 0:13:44Come on, girl.
