0:02:15 > 0:02:19Let me get some of Sam's tools and see

0:02:19 > 0:02:23if we can stops sending great clouds in the air.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26Here, here, Salty.

0:02:26 > 0:02:31Do you remember the time we had to deal with a great cloud in the air?

0:02:31 > 0:02:34Yeah, let me tell you that story.

0:02:34 > 0:02:39You'll like this. It involves a moon maiden.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43Once upon a twinkly time, we set off from Staithes,

0:02:43 > 0:02:48waved goodbye to Whitby and headed off over the horizon.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50And as we sailed, we sang.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52# Just Salty Dog and me

0:02:52 > 0:02:55# A-sailing on the sea

0:02:55 > 0:02:57# Singing a song to our favourite tune

0:02:57 > 0:03:01# Watching the sun chased away by the moon

0:03:01 > 0:03:03# Drifting away to the end of the day

0:03:03 > 0:03:05# Just Salty Dog and me. #

0:03:05 > 0:03:09Salty and I, we sailed off into the night.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12All we could see was the white foam of the water

0:03:12 > 0:03:16and the light from a lovely, big, full moon.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18That's it, up there. You see it, yeah.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22"Look at that," I said to Salty.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25"The moonlight's reflected on the water,

0:03:25 > 0:03:29"heading all the way to the horizon, straight as a Roman road."

0:03:29 > 0:03:31But then Salty barked.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34- Woof!- "Can you see what I see?"

0:03:34 > 0:03:38I ran to the prow of the boat and stared out into the night.

0:03:38 > 0:03:42There was someone walking towards us, across the sea.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45It was a lady.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47A tall, beautiful lady.

0:03:47 > 0:03:54And then I realised, "Salty, she's not walking on the water,

0:03:54 > 0:03:56"she's walking on the moonlight."

0:03:56 > 0:03:59And that's exactly what she was doing.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03The moonlight twinkled like diamonds in between her toes

0:04:03 > 0:04:06as she got closer and closer and closer.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09She walked right up to the boat

0:04:09 > 0:04:14and I could see her clothes were like silk and clouds woven together.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16Her hair was filled with stars

0:04:16 > 0:04:20and her skin was mottled like the moon itself.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23She said "Hello, Jack."

0:04:23 > 0:04:25I said, "Hello!

0:04:25 > 0:04:28"But how did you know my name?"

0:04:28 > 0:04:32She said, "We've been watching you, Jack. And you, Salty.

0:04:32 > 0:04:37"We always watch the adventures of the Rainbow from my home, up there."

0:04:37 > 0:04:43And she pointed up at the sky. She pointed at the moon.

0:04:43 > 0:04:50I said, "The moon? Are you from the moon?" She said, "Indeed.

0:04:50 > 0:04:54"I am a moon maiden. Once every full moon,

0:04:54 > 0:04:59"one of the moon people is allowed down to earth to make new friends.

0:04:59 > 0:05:01"Will you be my friend?"

0:05:01 > 0:05:05I said, "Yes! Of course! I love making new friends!"

0:05:05 > 0:05:10"Thank you," said the Moon Maiden. "May I come aboard the Rainbow?"

0:05:10 > 0:05:14I said, "Oh, yes, it's an honour. Welcome aboard."

0:05:14 > 0:05:20And the Moon Maiden stepped off the path of moonlight and onto the boat.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23But just in that second, a cold wind blew

0:05:23 > 0:05:28and big dark clouds rolled in front of the moon, blotting it out.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30And the moonlight disappeared too,

0:05:30 > 0:05:34its reflection on the water just twinkled away to nothing.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36And it was gone.

0:05:36 > 0:05:41Suddenly, the Moon Maiden moaned and she looked all faint.

0:05:41 > 0:05:45She had to sit down on an old coil of rope. She said, "Oh dear."

0:05:45 > 0:05:49I said, "What is it, Moon Maiden? What's wrong?"

0:05:49 > 0:05:55She said, "Oh, Jack, I'm sorry, but I feel pale and weary.

0:05:55 > 0:06:00"I've lost the moonlight. And moonlight keeps me strong.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04"I should go back home but I can't." I said, "Why not?"

0:06:04 > 0:06:08"The only way home is to walk along the moonlight

0:06:08 > 0:06:13"all the way to the horizon, and then it's just a small step up

0:06:13 > 0:06:15"back to the moon.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19"But now the clouds had covered the moon so the moonlight path is gone."

0:06:19 > 0:06:23"Never mind," I said. "You can stay here and wait with me.

0:06:23 > 0:06:27"Then maybe the weather will be better tomorrow night."

0:06:27 > 0:06:32"No," she said. "I can't wait until tomorrow. As soon as the sun rises,

0:06:32 > 0:06:38"I'll fade away. Oh, Jack, oh, Salty, whatever shall I do?"

0:06:38 > 0:06:41And I said, "Don't you worry, Moon Maiden. I'm your friend.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44"That's what you said. Your friend on earth.

0:06:44 > 0:06:49"And friends always help each other. Isn't that right, Salty?

0:06:49 > 0:06:53And Salty barked "Yes, yes, yes!"

0:06:53 > 0:06:57But the Moon Maiden looked up at the night sky.

0:06:57 > 0:07:02It was filled with huge purple and black storm clouds.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05She said, "Those clouds are bigger the mountains.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09"You're a very clever man, Jack, but even you can't move the sky."

0:07:09 > 0:07:12"Oh, is that right?" I said.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16"You just watch me cause if there's one thing I like in this life,

0:07:16 > 0:07:21"it's a challenge. Especially when one of my friends is in trouble."

0:07:21 > 0:07:27So I fired up the motor on the Rainbow and we sailed top speed

0:07:27 > 0:07:31all the way back to Staithes. "Hold on tight," I said.

0:07:31 > 0:07:35And Salty barked with joy as we zoomed along.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39Faster and faster we went! "Hurry up, Jack," said the Moon Maiden.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41She got paler and paler

0:07:41 > 0:07:44and the stars in her hair began to disappear.

0:07:44 > 0:07:49The Rainbow sailed up to the village but all the houses were in darkness.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52It was the middle of the night. Everyone was asleep.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55"I can soon wake them up," I said.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58I began to blow on the Rainbow's foghorn.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00It went "Baaaaaaaah," again and again.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03"Baaaaaaah," echoing across the night!

0:08:03 > 0:08:07"Baaaaaah!" And Salty began to bark, "Woo-woo-woo-woof!"

0:08:07 > 0:08:11And I sounded the foghorn again and again, "Baaaaaa!

0:08:11 > 0:08:15"Baaaaa!" "Wooo-woof!" Lights came on, windows lit up,

0:08:15 > 0:08:19sleepy faces appeared round doorways. Well, I kept going.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21"Baaaaaaaa!"

0:08:21 > 0:08:25Jack! You old nuisance. Be quiet!

0:08:25 > 0:08:29- We're trying to sleep. - ..said Miss Bowline-Hitch.

0:08:29 > 0:08:32But I shouted out, "I need your help!

0:08:32 > 0:08:37- "Or this poor lady will fade away!" - What are we supposed to do?

0:08:37 > 0:08:40..called Shelly. I shouted out, "I need you to blow,

0:08:40 > 0:08:44"I need you to huff and puff and blow with all your might.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47"I want you to blow into the air

0:08:47 > 0:08:51"because if we blow together we might be able to move those clouds."

0:08:51 > 0:08:54- Don't be daft!- That won't work!

0:08:54 > 0:08:58This sounds like one of your tall tales, Jack.

0:08:58 > 0:08:59"No, no, it's true," I said.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02"We need to move those clouds and find the moon

0:09:02 > 0:09:06"so this poor Moon Maiden can walk on the moonlight.

0:09:06 > 0:09:11"Please, please help me! Oh, please. You've got to believe me!"

0:09:11 > 0:09:16And then...one little voice said:

0:09:16 > 0:09:18I believe you.

0:09:18 > 0:09:23It was Pip, the tailor's son, bright red hair, still wearing his pyjamas.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27But he was the bravest lad I've ever seen.

0:09:27 > 0:09:33As he lifted his face up to the sky, took a deep breath and blew.

0:09:34 > 0:09:37- And then his sister, Olive, she said:- I can do that.

0:09:37 > 0:09:42And she started blowing, too. She went "Whhhhhhhhhhh!"

0:09:42 > 0:09:44And Pip went "Whhhhhhhhhh!"

0:09:45 > 0:09:48And then all the children began to join in.

0:09:48 > 0:09:53They all faced the sky and took a deep breath in and then blew out

0:09:53 > 0:09:57with a great big whhhhhhhh,

0:09:57 > 0:10:01again and again they went. "Whhhhhhhh!"

0:10:01 > 0:10:04"That's it," I said. "Keep blowing!"

0:10:04 > 0:10:08And then one of the grown-ups said, "Let's help."

0:10:08 > 0:10:11And they all began to join in. Everyone blew.

0:10:11 > 0:10:15The mums, dads, shopkeepers, the schoolteacher,

0:10:15 > 0:10:18the lollipop lady, Ernie, Emily, Sam, Shelly

0:10:18 > 0:10:22and Miss Bowline-Hitch, all of them blowing into the night sky.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28And I was blowing too, whhhhh! And Salty - "Whhhhhhhh!"

0:10:28 > 0:10:32We all went "Whhhhhhh!"

0:10:32 > 0:10:39And then the clouds began to move. "More!" I shouted, "More!"

0:10:39 > 0:10:42And now the whole village lined up on the shore

0:10:42 > 0:10:44and everybody went "Whhhhhh!"

0:10:44 > 0:10:49And the Moon Maiden cried out, "It's working!"

0:10:49 > 0:10:54Slowly, the huge clouds rolled back

0:10:54 > 0:10:59and the whole village kept going, "Whhhhhhh, whhhhhhhh!"

0:10:59 > 0:11:03And then the curve of the moon appeared

0:11:03 > 0:11:08and we all blew some more until the final clouds rolled away

0:11:08 > 0:11:13and there was the full moon shining in the sky.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17And the moonlight appeared on the water like a glittery road,

0:11:17 > 0:11:20heading towards the horizon.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23"My way home," said the Moon Maiden,

0:11:23 > 0:11:25with tears of joy in her eyes.

0:11:25 > 0:11:30And then everyone in the village clapped and cheered.

0:11:30 > 0:11:36"Yay, yay!" And the Moon Maiden turned to face all of us.

0:11:36 > 0:11:40"I will never forget this," she said.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44"You are the best friends I could ever hope to make."

0:11:44 > 0:11:47Then she stepped over the edge of the boat

0:11:47 > 0:11:52and onto the moonlight path. She looked back one last time.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55"Goodbye, Jack," she said.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59"And remember, whenever the moon is in the sky,

0:11:59 > 0:12:02"that means I am looking down and watching you.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04"And I will always keep you safe."

0:12:04 > 0:12:08"Thank you, Moon Maiden," I said.

0:12:08 > 0:12:10"Bye-bye."

0:12:10 > 0:12:12And then I watched and Salty watched

0:12:12 > 0:12:16and the whole village watched from the shore

0:12:16 > 0:12:19as the beautiful Moon Maiden walked over the water,

0:12:19 > 0:12:22along the twinkling path of moonlight,

0:12:22 > 0:12:24towards the horizon,

0:12:24 > 0:12:27until she was gone.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30I've never seen her since that day.

0:12:30 > 0:12:34But every night, when we sail out to sea, Salty and I,

0:12:34 > 0:12:40we look up, because we know there's not just a man in the moon,

0:12:40 > 0:12:43but a beautiful maiden too.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46You look up tonight, you might see her.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51FOGHORN BLARES

0:12:53 > 0:12:57Oh, right. I better get back to that old boiler valve.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00- FOGHORN BLARES - Yes, all right. Oh, dear.

0:13:03 > 0:13:08- Oh, you're back soon, Sam. - Yes, Jack's still using my tools.

0:13:08 > 0:13:09FOGHORN BLARES

0:13:09 > 0:13:12He'll be working on the boiler for a while.

0:13:12 > 0:13:16So how about some fish? What can I do you for?

0:13:16 > 0:13:20I think I'll have a nice piece of... FOGHORN DROWNS HER OUT

0:13:20 > 0:13:23- ..for my dinner. - A nice piece of what?

0:13:23 > 0:13:27A nice piece of... FOGHORN DROWNS HER OUT

0:13:27 > 0:13:31- What was that?- A nice piece of... FOGHORN DROWNS HER OUT

0:13:33 > 0:13:35BOTH: Jack!

0:13:35 > 0:13:39What? Was that somebody calling, Salty? No?

0:13:39 > 0:13:42FOGHORN BLARES

0:13:42 > 0:13:45- This could take a very long... - FOGHORN DROWNS HIM OUT

0:13:45 > 0:13:46A very long what?

0:13:46 > 0:13:49- I said, a very long... - FOGHORN DROWNS HIM OUT
