0:03:01 > 0:03:03Yep, ha-ha!

0:03:04 > 0:03:06Hello?

0:03:07 > 0:03:09That looks like Sam, Salty.

0:03:09 > 0:03:14What's she doing on the beach today, eh?

0:03:14 > 0:03:16Oh! Looks like she's busy.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19She's got a stick. She's writing.

0:03:19 > 0:03:24No, wait a minute, she's drawing something on the sand.

0:03:24 > 0:03:29That's odd. She's drawing an enormous ear.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31SALTY WHINES QUIZZICALLY

0:03:31 > 0:03:34Why would Sam do a thing like that?

0:03:34 > 0:03:36Perhaps it's a message for me.

0:03:36 > 0:03:41I can't think why she'd draw an ear, though.

0:03:41 > 0:03:44Although that does remind me

0:03:44 > 0:03:49of the time I almost got into a lot of trouble over an ear.

0:03:49 > 0:03:50Do you remember?

0:03:50 > 0:03:53Well, it was a pair of ears, actually.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56Yeah. Why don't you make yourself nice and comfy

0:03:56 > 0:03:59and I'll tell you a story.

0:03:59 > 0:04:04This'll make your whiskers whiffle, Salty, my girl! Hoo-hoo!

0:04:04 > 0:04:06Once upon a twinkly time,

0:04:06 > 0:04:10the Rainbow set off from Staithes, waved goodbye to Whitby,

0:04:10 > 0:04:13and disappeared over the horizon.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16# Yes, Salty Dog and me

0:04:16 > 0:04:18# Upon the briny sea

0:04:18 > 0:04:21# We washed our hands and we brushed our hair

0:04:21 > 0:04:24# We're sailing here, we're sailing there

0:04:24 > 0:04:27# We take it steady, we're always ready

0:04:27 > 0:04:31# A Salty Dog and me! Ha-ha! #

0:04:31 > 0:04:34Over the waves we sailed until, suddenly, I heard

0:04:34 > 0:04:37a roaring and a raging.

0:04:37 > 0:04:42"Huhh! I want my hair cut!"

0:04:42 > 0:04:45I dashed to the side of the boat and I looked out.

0:04:45 > 0:04:47It was coming from below.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50"Come on," I said to Salty, "let's go and investigate."

0:04:50 > 0:04:53Soon, we were under the water.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Up ahead of us, we saw a little barber shop

0:04:55 > 0:04:58and sitting in the barber's chair

0:04:58 > 0:05:02was Derek, the Deep Sea Dastardly Duke.

0:05:02 > 0:05:06We were all a-shiver and a-shake at the sight of him.

0:05:06 > 0:05:10One wrong move and Derek splashes the waves

0:05:10 > 0:05:14so high, you'll end up in the day after tomorrow.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17And if you say something he doesn't like, he might shout so loud

0:05:17 > 0:05:21that it feels like your ears are changing sides.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25And if you look at him the wrong way, he whirls round and round

0:05:25 > 0:05:28so fast, it feels like your nose is falling off!

0:05:28 > 0:05:32"I want my hair cut!" he roared.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35I looked at Salty, Salty looked at me.

0:05:35 > 0:05:39"I haven't got any scissors," I said to Salty.

0:05:39 > 0:05:43Just then, who should turn up but Charlie Squid?

0:05:43 > 0:05:48And, amazing! In each arm, he had a mirror, some scissors,

0:05:48 > 0:05:51a towel and some shampoo.

0:05:51 > 0:05:53He had the full gear to cut the hair

0:05:53 > 0:05:56of Derek, the Deep Sea Dastardly Duke.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59"I need you to help me," says Charlie.

0:05:59 > 0:06:02"Come on, Salty," I said, "there's a job to be done."

0:06:02 > 0:06:05Well, Derek gathered us round about him.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08"I'm getting married," he said.

0:06:08 > 0:06:10"And I want the world's best haircut,

0:06:10 > 0:06:15"but this has to be a secret haircut."

0:06:15 > 0:06:19"Do you promise not to tell anyone what you see here today?" he said.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21"We promise," I said.

0:06:21 > 0:06:25"Remember," said Derek. "Secrets are slippery, there's not a doubt.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28"You may keep them in but they'll want to slip out.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31"Now, get cutting."

0:06:32 > 0:06:37So Charlie got to work. Snip-snip here, snip-snip there.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40Back short, sides short, in and out the dusty bluebells.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44Salty rushed to and fro, fetching and carrying,

0:06:44 > 0:06:47till she got tired and she lay down, she went to sleep.

0:06:47 > 0:06:53But then, just then, I noticed THE most amazing thing ever.

0:06:55 > 0:07:02Derek, the Deep Sea Dastardly Duke had bright blue ears!

0:07:03 > 0:07:05They were peeping out from under his hair!

0:07:05 > 0:07:09Charlie didn't see them. He just went on snipping.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12And Salty didn't notice because Salty was asleep

0:07:12 > 0:07:14but, oh, dear me. Oh!

0:07:14 > 0:07:19Derek saw me looking at his bright blue ears, and he said,

0:07:19 > 0:07:24"Remember, not a word to a single person. Sh!"

0:07:24 > 0:07:27"Finished!" said Charlie.

0:07:27 > 0:07:31And Derek, delighted, He was so delighted,

0:07:31 > 0:07:37he said that Charlie, Salty and I were invited to his wedding feast,

0:07:37 > 0:07:39that very evening.

0:07:39 > 0:07:44And off he went in his special underwater Derek Dive-o-mobile.

0:07:45 > 0:07:49"Come on, Salty, me old girl, we've got a bit of a walk ahead of us,

0:07:49 > 0:07:54"if we want to go to this feast," I said. So off we went.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57But, all the time, I was thinking, "Whatever I do, I must never,

0:07:57 > 0:08:03"never tell a single person about Derek's bright blue ears."

0:08:03 > 0:08:05HE LAUGHS

0:08:05 > 0:08:09But it wasn't long before we came across George the swordfish.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11"Hello," says I.

0:08:11 > 0:08:16"It's amazing. Derek the Deep Sea Dastardly Duke's got bright blue..."

0:08:16 > 0:08:19Boosh! I stopped myself.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21"He's got bright blue trousers."

0:08:22 > 0:08:25That was close!

0:08:25 > 0:08:29Salty looked at me very strangely. Well, we walked on a bit further

0:08:29 > 0:08:34and came across the Cod Twins, playing at being Derek.

0:08:34 > 0:08:35And I said, "Hang on a minute.

0:08:35 > 0:08:39"If you two are being Derek, your ears should be..."

0:08:39 > 0:08:40Oosh! I stopped myself.

0:08:40 > 0:08:44"Your ears should be listening out

0:08:44 > 0:08:49"for anything that might be coming past, like sharks, or crocodiles."

0:08:49 > 0:08:51(That was close!)

0:08:51 > 0:08:54Salty looked at me very, very strangely.

0:08:54 > 0:08:59We walked on a bit further and came across a little painter fish.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02He was painting a picture of Derek for his wedding.

0:09:02 > 0:09:07I looked at the picture and I said, "The ears. Derek's ears are...

0:09:07 > 0:09:09Sh!

0:09:09 > 0:09:11Just managed to stop myself.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14"Derek's ears are beautiful," I said.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17"Thank you," says the painter.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19Oh, that was close.

0:09:19 > 0:09:24Well, Salty looked at me very strangely.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27But secrets are slippery, there's not a doubt.

0:09:27 > 0:09:31You may keep them in, but they want to slip out.

0:09:31 > 0:09:38Ho-ho-ho! Well, I just had to tell someone about Derek's blue ears.

0:09:38 > 0:09:40So who could I tell?

0:09:40 > 0:09:44I looked at Salty. Salty looked at me.

0:09:44 > 0:09:49"Salty," I said, "I know you can keep a secret, and you really must,

0:09:49 > 0:09:53"must, must keep this secret. But, you see, I've got to tell someone!

0:09:53 > 0:09:59"Derek the Deep Sea Dastardly Duke has got bright blue ears!"

0:09:59 > 0:10:02HE CACKLES

0:10:02 > 0:10:05And Salty smiled. And nodded.

0:10:05 > 0:10:08Yeah. She could keep a secret, all right.

0:10:08 > 0:10:11"Oh, that felt better," I thought.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14And then, we got to Derek's wedding feast.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17Oh, ho-ho! It was a huge wedding.

0:10:17 > 0:10:23Everyone who was anyone was there, including a beautiful bride,

0:10:23 > 0:10:27who was now Mrs Derek, and of course me and Charlie and Salty.

0:10:27 > 0:10:31And the band was playing and, oh, it was wonderful!

0:10:31 > 0:10:36Everyone was dancing, even Salty! You should have seen her!

0:10:36 > 0:10:39It all got so exciting that, all of a sudden,

0:10:39 > 0:10:41Salty just burst out, singing,

0:10:41 > 0:10:42# Derek's got bright blue ears

0:10:42 > 0:10:45# Derek's got blue ears

0:10:45 > 0:10:49# Do you know what? I know what! Derek's got bright blue ears! #

0:10:49 > 0:10:53"Stop right there!" shouted Derek.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56And the room went silent.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58I was horrified.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00Derek looked angry.

0:11:00 > 0:11:02"I heard that, every word of it."

0:11:02 > 0:11:04"Who said that?"

0:11:04 > 0:11:07Everyone looked round and - yes, it was you -

0:11:07 > 0:11:09and everyone looked at Salty.

0:11:09 > 0:11:13"This is your dog, isn't it?" Derek said to me.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17"You must have told your dog about my bright blue ears," said Derek.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20"Yes," I said. And I did some quick thinking.

0:11:20 > 0:11:24Well, you said I mustn't tell a single person.

0:11:24 > 0:11:26I didn't tell a single person.

0:11:26 > 0:11:28I told a dog.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31Salty Dog! My lovely old Salty Dog!

0:11:31 > 0:11:35For a moment, there was another silence and then...

0:11:35 > 0:11:39HE LAUGHS

0:11:39 > 0:11:40"Oh, yes," said Derek.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44"Yes, you're right. You didn't tell a single person.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47"You told your dog! Ha-ha-ha! Very funny!

0:11:47 > 0:11:51"Oh, you make me laugh, Jack! Ha-ha! What am I making a fuss about?

0:11:51 > 0:11:56"So I've got bright blue ears. My wife's got bright yellow ears!"

0:11:56 > 0:11:59Well, we looked at the lovely bride,

0:11:59 > 0:12:02and she did indeed have bright yellow ears.

0:12:02 > 0:12:07"That's why I love her," said Derek. "We're all different!"

0:12:07 > 0:12:11And then Derek announced, "Everybody at the wedding,

0:12:11 > 0:12:14"let's all sing a new song."

0:12:14 > 0:12:17# Derek's got bright blue ears

0:12:17 > 0:12:19# Derek's got blue ears

0:12:19 > 0:12:24# Do you know what? I know what! Derek's got bright blue ears! #

0:12:24 > 0:12:28Oh, everyone joined in. It was fantastic!

0:12:28 > 0:12:33And later, as everyone sang and danced away in the moonlight,

0:12:33 > 0:12:37we returned to the Rainbow, tired and happy.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40Ha! We set our course for the horizon

0:12:40 > 0:12:44and chug-chug-chugged away under a sky full of stars.

0:12:44 > 0:12:45RAINBOW WHISTLES

0:13:14 > 0:13:19Maybe it's something to do with that ear she drew on the sand! Ha!

0:13:19 > 0:13:22Ooh, wait a minute.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24That's not an ear.

0:13:24 > 0:13:27That's the handle of a teacup!
