0:03:29 > 0:03:30HE SIGHS

0:03:30 > 0:03:32Do you remember that time I thought

0:03:32 > 0:03:35we could do without something we really needed, Salty?

0:03:35 > 0:03:39The Map! We need the map to know where we're going.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42Oh, we got in a right pickle that day and no mistake.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44- HE SIGHS - Let me get comfortable

0:03:44 > 0:03:47and I'll tell you the whole story.

0:03:47 > 0:03:52Once upon a twinkly time, The Rainbow set off from Staithes,

0:03:52 > 0:03:57waved goodbye to Whitby and disappeared over the horizon.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00I had lent my map to a pal of mine.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03Now, we usually never leave port without it,

0:04:03 > 0:04:05but it was such a lovely day

0:04:05 > 0:04:08I convinced Salty that we should set sail.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10And I began to sing.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13# Just Salty Dog and me

0:04:13 > 0:04:15# Upon the briny sea

0:04:15 > 0:04:18# We've got no map but that's OK

0:04:21 > 0:04:23# We're bowling along and singing this song

0:04:23 > 0:04:27# Just Salty Dog me. #

0:04:27 > 0:04:30- HE LAUGHS - Well, we hadn't got very far

0:04:30 > 0:04:33when it got very cold and very foggy.

0:04:33 > 0:04:34Salty had that

0:04:34 > 0:04:38you-should-have-brought-the-map look in her eye.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40And she was right.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42"We're lost," I exclaimed.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45"Found you," said a squeaky voice.

0:04:45 > 0:04:47"Can I get a badge for that?"

0:04:47 > 0:04:49HE LAUGHS

0:04:49 > 0:04:53It was our old friend Penguin on an iceberg.

0:04:53 > 0:04:57"You're near the South Pole," said Penguin.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00Well, I'd quite forgotten that Penguin

0:05:00 > 0:05:05was a member of the 123rd South Pole Rangers.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08He had a badge for everything.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12"And now I'm going to get one for flying," he said

0:05:12 > 0:05:14"Ah," said Salty.

0:05:14 > 0:05:19"Penguin," I asked, "can you fly?"

0:05:19 > 0:05:24"No," he said, "but I'm trying and then I can get a badge for it."

0:05:24 > 0:05:26"Look."

0:05:26 > 0:05:29And he held up his Rangers handbook

0:05:29 > 0:05:33and turned to the page that said "flying badge."

0:05:33 > 0:05:36"To be awarded a flying badge," it said,

0:05:36 > 0:05:39"Rangers must go as far as the blue-tipped iceberg

0:05:39 > 0:05:44by flapping their wings and not touching the ground, not once."

0:05:44 > 0:05:48Well, we all looked at the blue-tipped iceberg.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51It was a very long way away.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54Penguin flapped his slippery wings.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57"I can do it," he said.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59And he flapped...and he flapped...

0:05:59 > 0:06:03and he hopped and he hopped and he flapped and he flapped again.

0:06:03 > 0:06:08"Am I at the blue-tipped iceberg yet," Penguin puffed.

0:06:08 > 0:06:14Salty put a paw over her eyes and shook her head.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18"Ohh," said the disappointed Penguin

0:06:18 > 0:06:22and he sat down...right beside The Rainbow.

0:06:22 > 0:06:27Beside The Rainbow? How's that possible?

0:06:27 > 0:06:31Salty and I looked over the side.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35The sea had completely frozen over.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39The Rainbow was stuck in the ice.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42"I can help," said Penguin.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45And he pecked away at the ice.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48Will... Peck! ..I get... Peck!

0:06:48 > 0:06:52..a badge... Peck! ..for this?

0:06:52 > 0:06:54Salty wasn't sure.

0:06:54 > 0:06:58Penguin had only managed to peck a teensy hole

0:06:58 > 0:07:02and his beak was looking a little skew-whiff.

0:07:02 > 0:07:08"Thank you," I said, "but I think we need something hot to melt the ice."

0:07:08 > 0:07:12"We'll have to wait until summer when the sun comes out."

0:07:12 > 0:07:16Well, Salty didn't want to wait until summer,

0:07:16 > 0:07:20she'd planned a trip to Saltburn and wanted to get home soon.

0:07:20 > 0:07:24And that's when her whiskers started wiffling.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27She was having one of her ideas.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30"Thelma the Dragon!" she woofed.

0:07:30 > 0:07:34"She can melt the ice with her hot, fiery breath."

0:07:34 > 0:07:37"Good thinking," I said. "Get the Dragon Whistle."

0:07:37 > 0:07:40"I can't find it," woofed Salty.

0:07:40 > 0:07:44"It's tied to the edge of the map," I said.

0:07:44 > 0:07:49And then I remembered, we didn't have the map either.

0:07:49 > 0:07:50Salty had that

0:07:50 > 0:07:54you-should-have-brought-the-map look in her eye.

0:07:54 > 0:07:58"How are we going to get Thelma now?" I said.

0:07:58 > 0:08:02And then Salty's whiskers started to wiffle,

0:08:02 > 0:08:04she was having another one

0:08:04 > 0:08:06- of her bright ideas. - SALTY BARKS

0:08:06 > 0:08:08"The Rainbow!"

0:08:08 > 0:08:14"We can send Thelma a signal using smoke from the funnel," she said.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16"She'll never see it," I said.

0:08:16 > 0:08:21"I know," said Penguin suddenly, "I'll get Thelma for you!"

0:08:21 > 0:08:24"But it's a very, very long way,"

0:08:24 > 0:08:27I shouted to Penguin as he dived through the ice.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30"It's all right, I might get a badge for this!"

0:08:30 > 0:08:32And he was off!

0:08:32 > 0:08:35"I hope he'll be OK," I said to Salty

0:08:35 > 0:08:37as we watched him go all the way

0:08:37 > 0:08:41to just past the blue-tipped iceberg and then...

0:08:41 > 0:08:44- we couldn't see him many more. - HE SIGHS

0:08:44 > 0:08:49Suddenly, Salty spotted a pink dot in the distance.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53When it was just past the blue-tipped iceberg,

0:08:53 > 0:08:54we could see...

0:08:54 > 0:08:56it was Thelma!

0:08:56 > 0:09:00Below in the water...there was Penguin

0:09:00 > 0:09:05flapping his wings and flying through the water.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08"I said I'd beat you back, Thelma,"

0:09:08 > 0:09:12he shouted as he shot out onto the ice.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15"Only just though," Thelma replied

0:09:15 > 0:09:18as she landed on top of The Rainbow's funnel.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20"Spot of bother, Jack?"

0:09:20 > 0:09:23"Nothing you can't solve," I said.

0:09:23 > 0:09:28And, in an instant, she had melted the ice with her hot, fiery breath

0:09:28 > 0:09:32and The Rainbow...was free.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34"Thank you, Thelma," I said.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36"And thank you, Penguin."

0:09:36 > 0:09:39"That's all right," said Penguin.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41"Do I get a badge for that?"

0:09:41 > 0:09:46So I looked on every page of the Penguin Rangers Handbook,

0:09:46 > 0:09:48but try as I might I just couldn't find

0:09:48 > 0:09:52a going to Smoulder Island to get Thelma badge.

0:09:52 > 0:09:57"Never mind," Penguin said with a woeful waddle,

0:09:57 > 0:10:01"the flying badge is the one I really want anyway."

0:10:01 > 0:10:08Then Salty pointed to the page about the flying badge.

0:10:08 > 0:10:12"To be awarded a flying badge," it said,

0:10:12 > 0:10:17"Rangers must go as far as the blue-tipped iceberg

0:10:17 > 0:10:23"by flapping their wings and not touching the ground, not once."

0:10:23 > 0:10:29Well, Penguin had gone further than the blue-tipped iceberg

0:10:29 > 0:10:34by flapping his wings and he didn't touch the ground, not once,

0:10:34 > 0:10:39he had flown all the way... underwater!

0:10:39 > 0:10:43"You can have your flying badge after all. Hooray!"

0:10:43 > 0:10:45HE LAUGHS

0:10:45 > 0:10:48"I can?" he stuttered, turning a little bit pink.

0:10:48 > 0:10:52- "Wow! Thank you!" - HE LAUGHS

0:10:52 > 0:10:56And we'll cheered and gave him a big hooray

0:10:56 > 0:11:01whilst he gave the 123rd South Pole Rangers' salute.

0:11:02 > 0:11:07"Well, we'd best be off before this ice freezes," I said.

0:11:07 > 0:11:11But then...I remembered, we were lost.

0:11:11 > 0:11:13We didn't have the map.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16"I know the way," said Thelma.

0:11:16 > 0:11:20So we said goodbye to Penguin

0:11:20 > 0:11:23and followed Thelma all the way

0:11:23 > 0:11:26- back to Staithes and home. - HORN

0:11:26 > 0:11:31And after that, we never left port without the map again.

0:11:31 > 0:11:35Salty made sure of that, didn't you, eh? Ha-ha!

0:11:35 > 0:11:36HORN

0:11:40 > 0:11:42Did you like that story, Salty?

0:11:42 > 0:11:44All true, of course.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46Mind you, my stories always are.

0:11:56 > 0:12:00It's a lot quieter in the workshop, Salty.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02Come on, I wonder if Sam's finished

0:12:02 > 0:12:05building that trunk for Ernie's fishing gear.

0:12:05 > 0:12:06Let's go and have a look.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11Ernie, are you all right?

0:12:11 > 0:12:14- I'm fine!- Oh.- Sam's told me to close my eyes,

0:12:14 > 0:12:16she's got a surprise for me.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19- She's finished my trunk.- Oh!

0:12:19 > 0:12:22All finished. You can take a look.

0:12:24 > 0:12:26Ooh!

0:12:26 > 0:12:29That's amazing!

0:12:29 > 0:12:33Perfect for my fishing stuff! Perfect!

0:12:33 > 0:12:37It looks more like a cupboard than I imagined it would.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40Well, that's because it is a cupboard.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43- Your trunks inside.- Oh! HE LAUGHS

0:12:50 > 0:12:53This?! It's a bit...small.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55I told you it would be a surprise.

0:12:55 > 0:12:59You see, that's what comes from having no plans and no tape measure.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01Sorry, Ernie.

0:13:01 > 0:13:05Do you know what, Sam, this cupboard would be perfect

0:13:05 > 0:13:06for my fishing stuff.

0:13:06 > 0:13:08Why don't we just clear it out

0:13:08 > 0:13:11and forget about building enormous trunks?

0:13:11 > 0:13:14- Good idea.- Yeah, that's the spirit.

0:13:14 > 0:13:16And I know just what we can put in there.

0:13:16 > 0:13:20Dog biscuits! Perfect for Salty. Yeah.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23See you later, Sam. Bye, Ernie.

0:13:23 > 0:13:25- See you later.- Bye, Jack.
