0:03:39 > 0:03:41JACK WHISTLES

0:03:41 > 0:03:42Over here!

0:03:42 > 0:03:46Jack and Salty! How did you do it?

0:03:46 > 0:03:50If there's one thing we can rely on, it's you being "busy-busy".

0:03:50 > 0:03:54I knew you'd get a couple of phone calls on the way.

0:03:54 > 0:03:56Well, really! I thought I'd be the winner.

0:03:56 > 0:03:58How disappointing.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01Now we've had our cup of tea and Salty's had her biscuit,

0:04:01 > 0:04:04I think it's about time we got back to the Rainbow.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07- No hard feelings?- None at all!

0:04:07 > 0:04:09- CHUCKLING:- Bye-bye!

0:04:09 > 0:04:11Come on, Salty.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23There she is - the Rainbow.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26What have you got for us today, me dear?

0:04:27 > 0:04:30Hey-hey! Come on, Salty.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33JACK HUMS A TUNE

0:04:33 > 0:04:34Here we are.

0:04:42 > 0:04:47That's it - you settle yourself down there, girl. Good girl.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50Well, that race we had with Miss Bowline-Hitch

0:04:50 > 0:04:51just shows, doesn't it?

0:04:51 > 0:04:54Fastest isn't always the best.

0:04:54 > 0:04:58Here, do you remember that underwater race we once saw?

0:04:58 > 0:05:01That was to see who was the fastest, wasn't it?

0:05:01 > 0:05:04Oh, this will whiffle your whiskers, girl.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06Once upon a twinkly time,

0:05:06 > 0:05:11the Rainbow set off from Staithes, waved goodbye to Whitby

0:05:11 > 0:05:13and disappeared over the horizon.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16# Just Salty Dog and me

0:05:16 > 0:05:18# Upon the briny sea

0:05:18 > 0:05:21# The sun is up, the weather's fair

0:05:21 > 0:05:23# Salty is sniffing the ocean air

0:05:23 > 0:05:27# We're not in a hurry so no need to worry

0:05:27 > 0:05:29# Just Salty Dog and me. #

0:05:29 > 0:05:30JACK LAUGHS

0:05:30 > 0:05:34Then suddenly, the Rainbow stopped.

0:05:34 > 0:05:35Oh!

0:05:35 > 0:05:39Salty looked over the stern - that's the back -

0:05:39 > 0:05:43and she pointed to some seaweed wrapped around our rudder.

0:05:43 > 0:05:44Ha!

0:05:44 > 0:05:46We were stuck.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49"We must be tangled up in the Seaweed Forest",

0:05:49 > 0:05:50I said to Salty.

0:05:50 > 0:05:55So we headed underwater to do some untangling.

0:05:56 > 0:06:01Well, down below, Salty spotted a crowd gathering on the sea bed.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05Mrs Cod was there, organising everyone.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08"Have you marked the start line, Harold?" she said.

0:06:08 > 0:06:10"Yes, dear", said Mr Cod.

0:06:10 > 0:06:12Then she spotted Salty and me.

0:06:12 > 0:06:17"Jack, you're just in time." "For what?" I asked.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20"The Grand Splashinol. We do it every year.

0:06:20 > 0:06:24"It's when someone tries to beat Speedy in a race."

0:06:24 > 0:06:28"But Speedy is the fastest fish in the sea!" I said.

0:06:28 > 0:06:33"Exactly", Mrs Cod replied. "No-one's ever beaten him."

0:06:33 > 0:06:36And with that, she announced,

0:06:36 > 0:06:39"Competitors for the Grand Splashinol,

0:06:39 > 0:06:41"take your places!"

0:06:41 > 0:06:44And immediately, there was a great "whoosh!"

0:06:44 > 0:06:48as Speedy sped up to the start line.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50But who was going to race him?

0:06:50 > 0:06:52"Come on!" Speedy said.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54All the fish shook their heads -

0:06:54 > 0:06:57they'd all tried before and they lost.

0:06:57 > 0:07:02So, in a flurry of fins, all the fish whizzed away,

0:07:02 > 0:07:07leaving a teeny tiny seahorse called Sam,

0:07:07 > 0:07:10wide-eyed and on his own.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14"You'll do", Speedy laughed. "This is going to be easy!"

0:07:14 > 0:07:19And with that, a determined look came onto Sam's face - hmm -

0:07:19 > 0:07:23and he flapped up to the start line next to Speedy.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25"You go for it, Sam!" I said.

0:07:25 > 0:07:29"You don't have to be big to do big things."

0:07:29 > 0:07:31Sam gulped.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34I gave out the race numbers. Sam's was a bit big

0:07:34 > 0:07:38and when I pinned it on, he started to sink.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40"I'll wear it for you", Salty woofed.

0:07:40 > 0:07:45And then Mrs Cod gave me the signal and I trumpeted,

0:07:45 > 0:07:50"On your marks, get set, go!"

0:07:50 > 0:07:54"See you at the finish line", Speedy smirked to Sam,

0:07:54 > 0:07:56"if you make it that far - ha-ha!"

0:07:56 > 0:08:01And he sped off, faster than a firework.

0:08:01 > 0:08:05Sam flapped his fins, with Salty trotting along beside him,

0:08:05 > 0:08:07but they were hardly past the start

0:08:07 > 0:08:10before Speedy was just a speck in the distance.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14"Oh, bother!" said Sam.

0:08:14 > 0:08:19Up ahead, Speedy sped past an arrow that was pointing the way.

0:08:19 > 0:08:23He zipped past it so fast, he sent the arrow whizzing round

0:08:23 > 0:08:27and it ended up pointing the wrong way.

0:08:27 > 0:08:31"Whoops!" said Speedy, chuckling to himself.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35A little while later, Sam flapped along with Salty.

0:08:35 > 0:08:41"Follow the arrow", Salty woofed and off they went...the wrong way.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44Well, it turned out that Salty and Sam

0:08:44 > 0:08:47had actually followed the arrow down a shortcut

0:08:47 > 0:08:50and they ended up in front of Speedy.

0:08:50 > 0:08:55"Go, Sam!" cheered Coral Reef, as Sam flapped past.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57And soon, Speedy arrived.

0:08:57 > 0:09:00"Go, Speedy!" Coral cheered.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04Speedy thought he was far ahead, so he stopped for a chat.

0:09:04 > 0:09:08"This'll be the third time I've won the Grand Splashinol",

0:09:08 > 0:09:09he bragged.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11"Really?" Coral marvelled.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14She asked Speedy if he had time for a photo.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17"Of course! Plenty of time."

0:09:17 > 0:09:20So Speedy posed for loads of photos.

0:09:20 > 0:09:21Dah-dee! Ta-dah!

0:09:21 > 0:09:24Against the volcano, beside the submarine,

0:09:24 > 0:09:28balancing on his tail, grinning a toothy grin.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32Soon, Coral suggested that perhaps Speedy should get going

0:09:32 > 0:09:34if he wanted to catch up with Sam.

0:09:34 > 0:09:40"Catch up?" laughed Speedy. "Sam and Salty are way behind!"

0:09:40 > 0:09:44"Actually, they passed by quite a while ago", Coral said.

0:09:44 > 0:09:46"What?!" said Speedy.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48And then he thought,

0:09:48 > 0:09:51"I'll take the shortcut through the Seaweed Forest.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53"That'll beat 'em!"

0:09:53 > 0:09:57Well, up ahead, Sam was getting tired.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00It was a long way for a little seahorse.

0:10:00 > 0:10:05"You don't have to be big to do big things", Salty woofed.

0:10:05 > 0:10:09And Sam swam on and on and on.

0:10:09 > 0:10:13Meanwhile, Speedy sped through the Seaweed Forest

0:10:13 > 0:10:18and up ahead, he could see Sam, nearly at the finish line.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21Speedy went faster, faster and faster.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23Then he stopped.

0:10:23 > 0:10:28A strand of seaweed had tangled round Speedy's tail.

0:10:28 > 0:10:29"Ah! Ooh!"

0:10:29 > 0:10:31He was stuck.

0:10:31 > 0:10:35He tried to pull himself free, but the seaweed wouldn't move.

0:10:35 > 0:10:39Something was making it really heavy.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41It was the Rainbow's rudder -

0:10:41 > 0:10:46Speedy and the Rainbow were tangled on the same strand of seaweed.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48"Rrrggghhh! Ooh!"

0:10:48 > 0:10:52Speedy pulled and edged slowly forwards.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55At the finish line, we could see Sam and Salty coming.

0:10:55 > 0:10:59Sam was huffing and puffing and flapping up to the finish.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02"Come on", we all cheered. "You can do it!"

0:11:02 > 0:11:06Speedy watched what was happening and put everything he had

0:11:06 > 0:11:10into one final tug on the seaweed.

0:11:10 > 0:11:12Ping! "Oh!"

0:11:12 > 0:11:15And Speedy pinged off towards the finish line

0:11:15 > 0:11:19and the seaweed untangled from the Rainbow's rudder.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23Speedy nearly caught up with Sam, but with a flap and a puff

0:11:23 > 0:11:25and a stretched-out nose...

0:11:26 > 0:11:29..Sam crossed the line first.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32Ha! "Sam is the winner", I announced,

0:11:32 > 0:11:35and the crowd went wild.

0:11:35 > 0:11:40"You don't need to be big to do big things", I said to Sam,

0:11:40 > 0:11:44as everyone patted him on the back and Coral Reef took his photo.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46And Speedy?

0:11:46 > 0:11:50Well, being beaten by a slow little seahorse

0:11:50 > 0:11:53made him a much less boastful fish.

0:11:53 > 0:11:58He even said "Well done" to Sam for beating him.

0:11:58 > 0:12:03So, now the Rainbow was free, it was time to go.

0:12:03 > 0:12:07We did some goodbye-ing and headed back on board

0:12:07 > 0:12:11and set our course for Staithes and home.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22Did you like that story, Salty? All true, of course.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25Mind you, my stories always are.

0:12:26 > 0:12:28Come on, girl.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41Come on, Salty - time for the raffle.

0:12:41 > 0:12:43We'd better get over to The Mermaid.

0:12:45 > 0:12:46Come on.

0:12:46 > 0:12:50Jack, Salty, you're just in time for the raffle.

0:12:50 > 0:12:55Yes - you're not upset about losing our little race earlier, are you?

0:12:55 > 0:12:58Not at all - I'm a good loser.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01Ladies and gentlemen, the winning number is...

0:13:01 > 0:13:03Seven, let it be seven!

0:13:09 > 0:13:10..number 12!

0:13:11 > 0:13:14- Oh.- Ah...!

0:13:16 > 0:13:19Does anyone have the winning number?

0:13:19 > 0:13:22Just a minute - Miss Bowline-Hitch, what was your number?

0:13:22 > 0:13:24Em...

0:13:24 > 0:13:26Oh...number 12.

0:13:26 > 0:13:30Ah! You are a winner after all, Miss Bowline-Hitch!

0:13:30 > 0:13:33- I am!- Yes, you are.

0:13:33 > 0:13:35- Congratulations! - Oh, thank you!

0:13:35 > 0:13:38- Yeah!- Hooray!

0:13:38 > 0:13:43Now we can celebrate with a cup of The Mermaid Cafe's finest tea.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46Yeah, and a couple of cakes, eh?
