0:02:52 > 0:02:56This is all about how our stars made it big.

0:02:56 > 0:02:57First up...

0:02:57 > 0:03:00# Do do-do do do do do-do... #

0:03:00 > 0:03:01..5 Seconds Of Summer.

0:03:03 > 0:03:07These guys are fast becoming one of the biggest pop-rock bands

0:03:07 > 0:03:09the world has ever seen.

0:03:09 > 0:03:13# ..Cos good girls are bad girls that haven't been caught... #

0:03:13 > 0:03:15But before all that,

0:03:15 > 0:03:17they were just four school kids growing up right here...

0:03:17 > 0:03:21in Sydney, Australia!

0:03:21 > 0:03:23# ..I swear she lives in that library... #

0:03:23 > 0:03:26Well, actually, it was here in Riverstone,

0:03:26 > 0:03:27just outside of Sydney.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30It's a quiet place, but it's here that a band formed that

0:03:30 > 0:03:32was about to make a lot of noise.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35So, do you guys actually want to know how 5 Seconds Of Summer

0:03:35 > 0:03:37made it massive?

0:03:37 > 0:03:40Of course you do! Let's do this.

0:03:40 > 0:03:41# ..Not reading books

0:03:41 > 0:03:44# She said to me # "Forget what you thought

0:03:44 > 0:03:47# "Cos good girls are bad girls that haven't been caught..." #

0:03:47 > 0:03:50It all started right here,

0:03:50 > 0:03:52at Norwest Christian College

0:03:52 > 0:03:55where Michael, Luke and Calum went to school.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58# Do do-do do do do do do... #

0:03:58 > 0:04:00The three of them loved music

0:04:00 > 0:04:02and they loved bands like Blink-182 and Green Day,

0:04:02 > 0:04:04so they decided to start a band.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07Probs the best idea in the history of best ideas.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09Whoa...!

0:04:15 > 0:04:16# Well, I don't even like you

0:04:16 > 0:04:20# Why do you want to go and make me feel this way... #

0:04:21 > 0:04:24The band was born.

0:04:24 > 0:04:26And it was Michael who randomly chose the name

0:04:26 > 0:04:285 Seconds Of Summer.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30# ..Cos I can feel you watching

0:04:30 > 0:04:34# Even when you know that you'll be seen... #

0:04:34 > 0:04:37So, the boys had the name and knew how to play...

0:04:37 > 0:04:39but that was a problem -

0:04:39 > 0:04:41they all played guitars and sang.

0:04:41 > 0:04:445 Seconds Of Summer needed a drummer.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47Enter local boy Ashton Irwin...

0:04:47 > 0:04:48hashtag love him!

0:04:48 > 0:04:50Oh... No spinning.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52No SPINNING! NOOOOO...!

0:04:53 > 0:04:57The now-complete band started uploading videos of themselves

0:04:57 > 0:04:59onto the internet

0:04:59 > 0:05:02and, not surprisingly, people were loving them, including me.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06I am giving you three Ambo points

0:05:06 > 0:05:07for not wasting any time,

0:05:07 > 0:05:09and getting your music online.

0:05:09 > 0:05:125SOS were gaining a lot of momentum with their online following,

0:05:12 > 0:05:14and they had a tonne of fans

0:05:14 > 0:05:16who loved what they were uploading.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18But they needed to get out there in the real world,

0:05:18 > 0:05:20so on the 3rd of December, 2011,

0:05:20 > 0:05:24they came right here to the Annandale Hotel in Sydney

0:05:24 > 0:05:27and played their first ever gig as a four-piece band.

0:05:27 > 0:05:29And I get to check it out. So excited.

0:05:29 > 0:05:33BAND PLAYS

0:05:33 > 0:05:35LYRICS INDISTINCT

0:05:39 > 0:05:42This is footage of the boys performing

0:05:42 > 0:05:45at that first gig at the Annandale.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49Oh, yes! This is the very stage where the 5 Seconds Of Summer boys

0:05:49 > 0:05:51performed their very first gig as a band.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54Now, I know it might look pretty small,

0:05:54 > 0:05:55but from here they went on to play

0:05:55 > 0:05:58in some of the biggest venues across the world.

0:06:03 > 0:06:07This was a stomping first performance as a four-piece.

0:06:07 > 0:06:11Two Ambo points coming your way, boys!

0:06:11 > 0:06:14Playing the Annandale was all well and good,

0:06:14 > 0:06:16but the boys wanted more.

0:06:16 > 0:06:17# ..Fine at all

0:06:17 > 0:06:22# I remember the day you told me you were leaving

0:06:22 > 0:06:26# I remember the make-up running down your face... #

0:06:26 > 0:06:28To take it to the next level, they needed help.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31Enter, Adam Wilkinson - their first ever manager.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35He's the guy who made them into a global phenomenon. Huh!

0:06:35 > 0:06:36Wouldn't it be nice if he was here

0:06:36 > 0:06:41in this beautiful spot to chat with me? Shame.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44Jokes! He totally is! I'm so excited.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49# ..Like the way it felt to fall asleep next to you...#

0:06:49 > 0:06:53Adam, firstly, thank you so much for bringing us 5SOS.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56But take us back to the beginning. How did it all start?

0:06:56 > 0:06:58I was working in a recording studio at the time

0:06:58 > 0:07:01and the guys came through on a little tour.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03There was just something about them, you know,

0:07:03 > 0:07:05there was this weird nervous energy between them.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08And they had the good looks, they had everything there.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11I hadn't heard their music at that point, but something just clicked.

0:07:11 > 0:07:15Did you have a sort of special sense that you thought these guys

0:07:15 > 0:07:17- could go on to do something amazing. - Absolutely.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20At that point, I didn't think they'd be as big as they are now,

0:07:20 > 0:07:21but they definitely had it.

0:07:21 > 0:07:23# ..If what we had was real

0:07:23 > 0:07:27# How could you be fine?

0:07:27 > 0:07:29# Cos I'm not fine at all

0:07:29 > 0:07:32# I remember the day you told me you was leaving... #

0:07:32 > 0:07:34So, you were with the guys for two years,

0:07:34 > 0:07:36do you have any fun stories from that time?

0:07:36 > 0:07:39Look, probably my favourite story is on one of our tours,

0:07:39 > 0:07:41I thought, it's probably time for the guys

0:07:41 > 0:07:43to start having their own hotel rooms, so...

0:07:43 > 0:07:45Wait, hold up, were they sharing?

0:07:45 > 0:07:48They were sharing up to that point. They were sharing two in a room.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50I thought it's probably time for them to have their own rooms.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53So we booked the hotel, we checked into the hotel,

0:07:53 > 0:07:55went to check on them about an hour later,

0:07:55 > 0:07:56and they'd put all their beds

0:07:56 > 0:07:59into one room and they were all sharing in the one room together.

0:07:59 > 0:08:00- Aw!- They all wanted to be together.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03They're really, you know, a great bunch of friends, obviously?

0:08:03 > 0:08:05Absolutely. They're best mates. So...

0:08:05 > 0:08:10# ..If the day I woke up with you right beside me... #

0:08:10 > 0:08:12Say 5 Seconds Of Summer have gone from a small band

0:08:12 > 0:08:15to one of the biggest bands in the world. Are you proud of them?

0:08:15 > 0:08:17Oh, unbelievably so.

0:08:17 > 0:08:19You know, to see them playing to 16 people,

0:08:19 > 0:08:22to the O2 Arena, has just been absolutely unbelievable.

0:08:22 > 0:08:25They're really hard-working guys and really good people,

0:08:25 > 0:08:27you know, and I couldn't be prouder of them.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29# ..The day you told me you were leaving

0:08:29 > 0:08:33# I remember the make-up running down your face... #

0:08:33 > 0:08:35Adam is awesome!

0:08:35 > 0:08:37Boys, have two Ambo points

0:08:37 > 0:08:40for landing a manager to help you get to the top.

0:08:42 > 0:08:46# ..Cos I'm not fine at all. #

0:08:46 > 0:08:48Their fan base was growing and growing,

0:08:48 > 0:08:51but 5SOS were really catapulted into stardom

0:08:51 > 0:08:53when a few of their fans tweeted about them.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56And when I say fans, I'm talking Louis and Niall.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58You know, One Direction.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01SCREAMING

0:09:04 > 0:09:05# Whoo! #

0:09:05 > 0:09:10That's right, those 1D boys loved 5SOS from the beginning

0:09:10 > 0:09:13and when they started talking about them online,

0:09:13 > 0:09:16everyone knew about their awesomeness.

0:09:16 > 0:09:18Have four Ambo points

0:09:18 > 0:09:21for being so good that even One Direction love you.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24# That's what I like about you

0:09:24 > 0:09:26# You hold me tight. #

0:09:26 > 0:09:30Soon the boys would be bigger than they ever could have dreams,

0:09:30 > 0:09:33but more about that later.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35Now, let's head back over to the UK

0:09:35 > 0:09:38to see how Paloma Faith made it massive.

0:09:38 > 0:09:40# She's gone

0:09:40 > 0:09:44# And I'm picking up the pieces... #

0:09:44 > 0:09:49Today, she is one of the UK's most sassy and stylish pop stars.

0:09:49 > 0:09:51But before she hit the big time,

0:09:51 > 0:09:56Paloma Faith was living right here in Stoke Newington, North London.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58# ..In her shadow is it me you see?

0:09:58 > 0:10:02# Cos all that's left is you and I

0:10:02 > 0:10:08# And I'm picking up the pieces she left behind... #

0:10:08 > 0:10:11This is the very street that Paloma grew up on.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14And back then, she didn't even know she could sing.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16This is the story of how a shy schoolgirl

0:10:16 > 0:10:20went on to become one of the biggest characters in pop.

0:10:20 > 0:10:24# Ooh! #

0:10:27 > 0:10:31It's hard to believe, but Paloma was actually really shy at school.

0:10:31 > 0:10:35But all that started to change when at aged seven,

0:10:35 > 0:10:37she got offered a role in a school play

0:10:37 > 0:10:40called Dinosaurs And All That Rubbish.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43And she caught the performance bug big time.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46# The city lead me out one night

0:10:46 > 0:10:48# Through lonely streets and neon light

0:10:48 > 0:10:50# Searching

0:10:50 > 0:10:52# Again... #

0:10:52 > 0:10:54A few years later, Paloma started going to

0:10:54 > 0:10:57the now-closed Islington Green School.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00She loved it there and got amazing grades,

0:11:00 > 0:11:04as well as developing her love for dancing, singing and performing.

0:11:04 > 0:11:06Have three Ambo points

0:11:06 > 0:11:08for overcoming your shyness, Paloma.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14Paloma left school with straight As,

0:11:14 > 0:11:17but she never really knew what she wanted to do.

0:11:17 > 0:11:21She had a bunch of random jobs, an actor, dancer, model,

0:11:21 > 0:11:25magician's assistant, and you'll never believe this,

0:11:25 > 0:11:28she had a job as a ghost on a ghost train.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30Say what?!

0:11:30 > 0:11:33Now, prepare yourselves

0:11:33 > 0:11:37to ride Carnesky's Ghost Train.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40It all sounds a bit too spooky for my liking,

0:11:40 > 0:11:44so I've tracked down Marisa who use of direct Paloma on the ghost train

0:11:44 > 0:11:46to find out more.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48Now, Marisa, I am super jealous,

0:11:48 > 0:11:51cos you got to work with Paloma for two whole years.

0:11:51 > 0:11:53Paint me a picture. What was it like?

0:11:53 > 0:11:57Well, she used to sing as she danced inside the ride.

0:11:57 > 0:12:01She was in this very dark, scary haunted-house ride

0:12:01 > 0:12:07in a beautiful vintage dress with all ghostly doves landing on her.

0:12:07 > 0:12:11And, every so often, you could hear her singing over the soundtrack,

0:12:11 > 0:12:13this beautiful voice coming across.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16# ..And although it was the shortest time

0:12:16 > 0:12:18# I'll never forget it... #

0:12:18 > 0:12:20So were you surprised to see Paloma

0:12:20 > 0:12:23doing all those amazing things that she does now?

0:12:23 > 0:12:26I think we all knew that Paloma was special.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29She's a really normal girl from London,

0:12:29 > 0:12:31she went to a normal school,

0:12:31 > 0:12:34and it was through sheer willpower

0:12:34 > 0:12:37and talent and professionalism

0:12:37 > 0:12:40and commitment that she succeeded.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42# It was best when we left it

0:12:42 > 0:12:45# Now I'll never forget it... #

0:12:45 > 0:12:46We're all very proud of her

0:12:46 > 0:12:50and it's such a joy to have been part of that story.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53All of us are very proud of her.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55That is one random job.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58And I love a bit of randomness!

0:12:58 > 0:13:00Have two Ambo points.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04# ..In this love affair. #

0:13:04 > 0:13:08While Paloma was spooking around the ghost train,

0:13:08 > 0:13:10she developed a kooky fashion sense.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12And it's this that got her noticed by a band

0:13:12 > 0:13:14who were looking for a singer.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17They asked her to join them and she said no.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20I'm kidding, she totally said yes.

0:13:20 > 0:13:24And it was when Paloma was performing with these guys

0:13:24 > 0:13:26that she got spotted by a record label

0:13:26 > 0:13:30and was asked to perform at an industry showcase,

0:13:30 > 0:13:32a very tough crowd to please.

0:13:32 > 0:13:36Paloma had to perform in front of a bigwig from Epic Records.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39I'm a record label bigwig.

0:13:39 > 0:13:43Talk about pressure. It was her chance to impress,

0:13:43 > 0:13:46but it didn't quite go to plan.

0:13:46 > 0:13:47Now, I wasn't there at the time,
