0:03:00 > 0:03:03These days, Union J are one of the biggest boybands in the UK.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05But before they hit the big time

0:03:05 > 0:03:08they were just four kids from the South of England

0:03:08 > 0:03:09who dreamed of stardom.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11We all know and love Union J.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14I mean, they're huge and everyone knows who they are.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17But it's not always been that way.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20Back in 2010, they were one three-piece band

0:03:20 > 0:03:24and a chap named George Shelley who loved to play the guitar.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26But when they combined forces,

0:03:26 > 0:03:29they would become one of the biggest boy bands in the country.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31Here's how it all happened.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34# I think I finally found the one

0:03:48 > 0:03:50Are you still with me? Good.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53The two met whilst studying performing arts

0:03:53 > 0:03:56at the world-famous Sylvia Young Theatre School.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01Sylvia and her school have taught the likes of Rita Ora

0:04:01 > 0:04:04and McBusted's Matt and Tom.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08And back in 2011, Josh and Jaymi were weekend pupils there.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Mega scoop, I've tracked down Josh's best mate Tim

0:04:15 > 0:04:18- Tim! Bring it in.- How are you doing?

0:04:21 > 0:04:24- Was he all about the music?- Always.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27No matter where we were, whether we were walking into a party,

0:04:27 > 0:04:30he'd be singing. In the car. Even on his lunch breaks,

0:04:30 > 0:04:34like, he'd be doing a karaoke session in the cafe at college and stuff.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36So always, always singing.

0:04:36 > 0:04:40- # I won't live forever - Won't live forever... #

0:04:40 > 0:04:42Tim and Josh have been BFFs since college

0:04:42 > 0:04:45and old mate Tim has even featured in a Union J video!

0:04:48 > 0:04:50What was Josh into, besides music?

0:04:50 > 0:04:53Other than music, he was really into his football.

0:04:53 > 0:04:54He was a goalkeeper.

0:04:54 > 0:04:57He was quite a good goalkeeper, to be fair to him.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59Oh, really? Did he let many in?

0:04:59 > 0:05:00Against me, yeah.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03There was a point where we had a game against each other, like,

0:05:03 > 0:05:05our football teams came together.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07And...a little hat-trick.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10SHE CHEERS

0:05:10 > 0:05:13Talk to me about his hair. Has it always been so amazing?

0:05:13 > 0:05:17Oh, no. Back in the day, it was like proper slicked to your head.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19He used to have the hair product in, straighten it,

0:05:19 > 0:05:21and it'd be like sizzling and burning.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24It's amazing he hasn't done any serious damage cos it is

0:05:24 > 0:05:26looking lush right now.

0:05:26 > 0:05:27And has he changed much?

0:05:27 > 0:05:29Do you know what, in all honesty, he hasn't.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31Like, not one bit. Like, he's still really genuine.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34He's still a laugh. He's a good...a really nice guy.

0:05:34 > 0:05:35He's just one of the lads really.

0:05:35 > 0:05:39- And the hair's got a little bit better.- A lot better. THEY LAUGH

0:05:39 > 0:05:41Tim, it has been absolutely amazing. Put it here.

0:05:41 > 0:05:43It's been a pleasure. Take it easy.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46# All I see is you when I wake up

0:05:46 > 0:05:48# You, when I talk

0:05:48 > 0:05:51# You, when... #

0:05:51 > 0:05:52Bye, Tim!

0:05:53 > 0:05:55- Oh, hello.- Oh, hi, Josh.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01Nah, can't be.

0:06:01 > 0:06:06Ambo, you crazy dingo, that WAS him. Ah, well. Back to the story.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09Josh and Jaymi were going from strength to strength

0:06:09 > 0:06:12but to make it big, they needed to get bigger, literally,

0:06:12 > 0:06:15so they decided to become a three-piece.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17Step up, Jamie Hamblett.

0:06:17 > 0:06:22Before music took over Jamie's life, he spent his days on one of these.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24Whoa!

0:06:24 > 0:06:26Well, obvs a real one.

0:06:26 > 0:06:29Yes, believe it or not, Jamie was a flat racing jockey,

0:06:29 > 0:06:31and a pretty good one at that.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35He won 23 races and even rode one of the Queen's horses!

0:06:35 > 0:06:38Have 3 Ambo Points for being a superstar jockey.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43In 2009, Jamie decided to hang up his saddle

0:06:43 > 0:06:45to concentrate on his music.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48He then met Josh and Jaymi, to create Triple J.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52The band already had a Jaymi so he became JJ, as in Jockey Jamie.

0:06:52 > 0:06:56# He got his fortune on the plate... #

0:06:56 > 0:06:58With Triple J together,

0:06:58 > 0:07:02the boys set about practicing to become the next big boy band.

0:07:02 > 0:07:07# He's got six zeroes but no one to share it with... #

0:07:07 > 0:07:11Meanwhile, in North Somerset, a young chap by the name of

0:07:11 > 0:07:14George Shelley also wanted a career in music.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17Time to get digging and find out everything I can about him!

0:07:17 > 0:07:22This is too much. I'm about to meet George's best mate, Emily.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24Play it cool, Ambo. Play it cool.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31Emily, no way! You're George's best mate. Come here.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34I want to know everything about George.

0:07:34 > 0:07:36# ..fix a broken heart

0:07:36 > 0:07:37# You have to try... #

0:07:37 > 0:07:39Let's talk George.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41What was he like back in the day?

0:07:41 > 0:07:44He was quite quiet. Quite shy.

0:07:44 > 0:07:46But really nice and sweet.

0:07:46 > 0:07:50- Hold the phone. Quite quiet? - Yeah, he was quite shy in himself.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53Like, he didn't really very many friends or anything.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56I sort of brought him out of his shell.

0:07:56 > 0:07:57So, was he into the singing?

0:07:57 > 0:07:59Yeah, he was always...

0:07:59 > 0:08:02I think that was his point where he just started to let himself go

0:08:02 > 0:08:03and become more confident.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06He'd always have the guitar there and sing,

0:08:06 > 0:08:08and that's when you could really see the real George.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11So, cos he was quiet, was he singing around everyone at school

0:08:11 > 0:08:13or was it something only you got to see?

0:08:13 > 0:08:15No, I really had to push it out of him.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17I was like, "Come on, pick up your guitar. I want to hear you sing."

0:08:17 > 0:08:19He was like, "No, no, no."

0:08:19 > 0:08:21Finally, I heard him sing one day and I was like, "Whoa!

0:08:21 > 0:08:23"You've got to go on the X Factor."

0:08:23 > 0:08:26- Really?!- Yeah. - And that's how it all started?- Yeah.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30George, I'm giving you 2 Ambo points for building up

0:08:30 > 0:08:33the courage to get your music out there.

0:08:33 > 0:08:34Off went George

0:08:34 > 0:08:38and his guitar to audition for the 2012 series of X Factor.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40And guess who else was there.

0:08:40 > 0:08:41Me!

0:08:41 > 0:08:43No, it was Triple J, of course.

0:08:43 > 0:08:45And what happened next was legendary.

0:08:51 > 0:08:55They both got kicked out of boot camp. Oh, not so good.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58But don't worry, Lady Luck was smiling down on them

0:08:58 > 0:09:01and one of the other groups had to pull out of the competition.

0:09:01 > 0:09:06So Triple J got a call to come back on X Factor as a four piece.

0:09:06 > 0:09:10Goodbye Triple J, hello Union J.

0:09:10 > 0:09:11# Your stare was holding

0:09:11 > 0:09:13# Ripped jeans, skin was showing

0:09:13 > 0:09:15# Hot night, wind was blowin'

0:09:15 > 0:09:18# Where you think you're going, baby?... #

0:09:18 > 0:09:20This was their first ever performance

0:09:20 > 0:09:22at the X Factor judges' houses.

0:09:22 > 0:09:26And after this, they were guaranteed to go through to the live shows.

0:09:26 > 0:09:30Boys, have 2 Ambo Points for making the most of your second chance.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32# I took no time with the fall

0:09:32 > 0:09:33# You gave me nothing... #

0:09:33 > 0:09:36But despite being amazing and incredibly popular,

0:09:36 > 0:09:41Union J didn't win the X Factor, that prize went to James Arthur.

0:09:41 > 0:09:46But those record industry peeps know a good thing when they see it,

0:09:46 > 0:09:48so, in December 2012,

0:09:48 > 0:09:53they signed Union J up and the dream was back on.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55# Don't ever say you're lonely

0:09:55 > 0:09:56# Just lay your problems on me

0:09:56 > 0:10:01# And I'll be waiting there for you... #

0:10:01 > 0:10:04They had their deal but success was a long way off.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06# You don't have to worry

0:10:06 > 0:10:08# I'll be all right... #

0:10:08 > 0:10:11What Union J needed was a hit single.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14And in 2013, that's what they got

0:10:14 > 0:10:17when they smashed into the top ten with Carry You.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19# Carry you

0:10:19 > 0:10:21# I'll carry you

0:10:21 > 0:10:23# I'll carry you

0:10:23 > 0:10:26# You know that I'll carry you

0:10:26 > 0:10:28# I'll carry you... #

0:10:28 > 0:10:29Union J had made it.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35Hitting the big time after not winning X Factor

0:10:35 > 0:10:38earns you 3 Ambo Points, boys.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40# In your shoes... #

0:10:40 > 0:10:42Right, that's how Union J made it.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45Now it's time to head across the globe to find out all about

0:10:45 > 0:10:48Lorde's rise to superstardom.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50# ..the ladies out

0:10:50 > 0:10:53# They're in their finery

0:10:53 > 0:10:55# A hundred jewels on throats

0:10:55 > 0:10:58# A hundred jewels between teeth... #

0:10:58 > 0:11:01Lorde may be a member of music royalty now,

0:11:01 > 0:11:02but before all that,

0:11:02 > 0:11:07she was just a kid who grew up right here in Auckland, New Zealand!

0:11:07 > 0:11:11# We live in cities you'll never see on screen

0:11:11 > 0:11:17# Not very pretty but we sure know how to run things... #

0:11:17 > 0:11:20When you think of New Zealand, you think Middle Earth.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22# Living in ruins of a palace within my dreams... #

0:11:22 > 0:11:25But this isn't a story about orcs and hobbits,

0:11:25 > 0:11:27it's about a girl named Ella Yellich-O'Connor

0:11:27 > 0:11:31and her quest to become one of the biggest names in pop.

0:11:31 > 0:11:32Lorde.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34Spoiler alert, she totally did it!

0:11:35 > 0:11:41# Don't you think that it's boring how people talk... #

0:11:41 > 0:11:45The story of how Ella became Lorde started right here.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48It was on these beaches in Devonport, New Zealand,

0:11:48 > 0:11:50where a young Ella loved to hang out.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53# I'm bored... #

0:11:53 > 0:11:55Another thing Ella loved to do was read.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59And by the age of 12, she'd read over a thousand books!

0:11:59 > 0:12:02# ..chasing a million things I want... #

0:12:02 > 0:12:06In 2009, Ella flew to South Africa to represent her school

0:12:06 > 0:12:10at the World Literature Quiz Final, where her team came second

0:12:10 > 0:12:11to none other than the UK.

0:12:14 > 0:12:18- # But I know they'll never own me - Yeah... #

0:12:18 > 0:12:21I'm giving you 4 Ambo Points for travelling to another continent

0:12:21 > 0:12:24to take part in a massive literary competition.

0:12:24 > 0:12:28So how did Ella go from a bookworm to budding pop star?

0:12:28 > 0:12:30Well, it all started at her school.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35When Ella was 12 she was already a budding musician

0:12:35 > 0:12:38and was playing in a band called Extreme.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41That's her there on the left, obvs.

0:12:41 > 0:12:46Not only that, but in 2009 she won her school's annual talent show.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48Have 3 Ambo points for rocking the school.

0:12:51 > 0:12:53So Lorde was wowing everyone at her school

0:12:53 > 0:12:56but she needed to take it to the next level

0:12:56 > 0:12:58and let the whole of her country hear her sing.

0:12:58 > 0:13:00And that's exactly what she did

0:13:00 > 0:13:03when she was invited to appear on Radio New Zealand.

0:13:06 > 0:13:08Hi, welcome to New Zealand.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11This is Radio New Zealand. My name's Jim.

0:13:13 > 0:13:16This is mega famous New Zealand radio DJ Jim Mora.

0:13:16 > 0:13:20Back in 2009, word of Ella's amazing voice reached him

0:13:20 > 0:13:23and Jimmy boy was quick to get her on his show.

0:13:23 > 0:13:28She was 12 years old and this was the very studio Lorde was in.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59And we get this.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02# What would my daddy say? #

0:23:09 > 0:23:10#Shamazing!

0:23:14 > 0:23:17This is Frank Strachan. He's a top pop stylist

0:23:17 > 0:23:20and worked with the boys when they first got together.

0:23:25 > 0:23:26They were great fun.

0:23:26 > 0:23:30It was really for us about trying to build an identity for them

0:23:30 > 0:23:33as a band that they could then go forward with.

0:23:33 > 0:23:35And what was that kind of identity that you tried to build?

0:23:35 > 0:23:37They don't really rock the boat.

0:23:37 > 0:23:40They're not really pushing anything. They're just looking like cool lads.

0:23:47 > 0:23:49Is being in a band about keeping it all uniform

0:23:49 > 0:23:52or do you get to keep a bit of your own identity?

0:23:52 > 0:23:53I think that times have moved on from

0:23:53 > 0:23:55when bands looked like a uniform, little package.

0:23:55 > 0:23:57No-one really believes that any more.

0:23:57 > 0:23:59I think it's much better for the fans to be able to identify

0:23:59 > 0:24:02with individual members, but, at the same time, I think

0:24:02 > 0:24:04it's important that it looks like they're all at the same party.

0:24:04 > 0:24:06They're all going to the same thing.

0:24:06 > 0:24:09It has been amazing chatting all things Union J. Bring it in.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25Now, I wasn't there at the time, but I imagine it went

0:24:25 > 0:24:27a little something like this.

0:24:29 > 0:24:30Hey, man, what's up, what's up?

0:24:30 > 0:24:34So, George, what are you wearing tonight to accessorize for the gig?

0:24:37 > 0:24:39Ni-i-ice! Oh, what are you going to do, Josh?

0:24:39 > 0:24:42Well, I was thinking I'd rock this, you know, sweater around my waist.

0:24:42 > 0:24:44Oh, look, it could be a tripping hazard.

0:24:44 > 0:24:46I wouldn't do that if I was you.

0:24:46 > 0:24:48Oh, George, you make me laugh.

0:25:12 > 0:25:14and he tripped over it and fell down the stairs.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16But don't worry, he suffered no injuries

0:25:16 > 0:25:19other than a little bit of a red face from embarrassment.

0:25:19 > 0:25:23# Yeah, yeah, yeah

0:25:23 > 0:25:25# Cos you got it all
