0:00:34 > 0:00:35APPLAUSE AND CHEERS

0:00:35 > 0:00:37Hello, I'm Richard.

0:00:37 > 0:00:42Yeah, I built a body-morphing machine last night and it works!

0:00:42 > 0:00:44It's just not the most reliable of things.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47Anyway, I am Richard Hammond, and this is my Blast Lab!

0:00:47 > 0:00:49APPLAUSE AND CHEERS

0:00:53 > 0:00:56Today I have invited two teams to come along

0:00:56 > 0:01:00and take part in top-level, exciting scientific challenges.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03The winning team will walk off with a wheelbarrow full of prizes.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05Let's have a look at what's in store.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18APPLAUSE AND CHEERS

0:01:18 > 0:01:21And the good news is that my top-secret underground lab

0:01:21 > 0:01:25is guarded by a team of crack SAS soldiers.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28The bad news is, I cooked for them last night

0:01:28 > 0:01:31and now they're all off sick with food poisoning.

0:01:31 > 0:01:35That's the last time I try cooking nuclear chicken in a basket.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38But don't worry, I have invited the very next best thing.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41She's trained in all ancient forms of martial arts,

0:01:41 > 0:01:44because she is herself ancient.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46- She is my Ninja Nan! - APPLAUSE AND CHEERS

0:01:55 > 0:01:58Ninja Nan, thanks for standing in.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01Now, she looks fragile, but she is a fully-trained ninja.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10See? Nan, if you'd like to make your way to security.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12Nan. Nan? Nan!

0:02:12 > 0:02:15Sorry, Nan. if you'd like to make your way to security and settle in.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18There she goes! Look at that!

0:02:18 > 0:02:20Faster than a lightning bolt!

0:02:20 > 0:02:22Stronger than a bear!

0:02:22 > 0:02:24Right now, as sleepy as a sloth!

0:02:24 > 0:02:27It's further than it looks to the security centre there.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29It's about a mile. She'll be there soon!

0:02:29 > 0:02:31Nan, are you settled in...

0:02:31 > 0:02:35Oh, there she is, look, pulling her little ninja trolley, marvellous!

0:02:35 > 0:02:38It's good to know she's there to protect us from invaders.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40Oh, what has she got? Aah, knitting! Yes!

0:02:40 > 0:02:44She's now so good at karate that she's actually beyond a black belt,

0:02:44 > 0:02:46which is as far as you can go, technically,

0:02:46 > 0:02:50so she's knitting herself a new belt, beyond a black belt.

0:02:50 > 0:02:56OK, you carry on, Nan. Meanwhile, we're gonna meet the group of people who claim to be our teams for today.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58Let's have a look at you. Show yourselves!

0:02:58 > 0:03:01CHEERS AND SQUEALS

0:03:04 > 0:03:06Yes, yes, yes, audience, we're all very excited,

0:03:06 > 0:03:09if they are the Yellow Team. They could be anybody!

0:03:09 > 0:03:12Can't be too careful here - that's why we have security and Ninja Nan.

0:03:12 > 0:03:16Sorry, I have to make sure that you are who you say you are.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18Your names, please - I'll check them off on the list.

0:03:18 > 0:03:22- You are? - Kristy!- Katie!- Alice!

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Kristy, Katie and Alice... yes, that checks out.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27Hidden talent, to prove you are who you say you are.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30- Alice, it's got your name here. - Yes. I'm a gymnast.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32Really? You see, you say that!

0:03:32 > 0:03:34We can't be too sure and we can't be too careful.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36Prove it and you can come in.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42OK, fair enough, I'd say that that proves you're a gymnast -

0:03:42 > 0:03:45you're cleared through security. Come into the Blast Lab.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49APPLAUSE AND CHEERS

0:03:49 > 0:03:51Sorry about that, can't be too careful.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54Can't let just anybody in. Where have you all come from?

0:03:54 > 0:03:56Milton Keynes,

0:03:56 > 0:04:00and we are the Penguins!

0:04:00 > 0:04:01Wooh!

0:04:01 > 0:04:04Oh, you've got your own name and your own routine!

0:04:04 > 0:04:06You needn't have bothered - you're the Yellow Team.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09Let's meet the people who claim to be the Red Team

0:04:09 > 0:04:11you'll be playing against.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13Where are they? Show yourselves, chaps!

0:04:13 > 0:04:15APPLAUSE AND CHEERS

0:04:15 > 0:04:20OK. Now you say you're the Red Team for Blast Lab?

0:04:20 > 0:04:22Well, I need you to prove that, obviously.

0:04:22 > 0:04:27- What are your names, first of all? - Stanley!- Philip!- Daniel!

0:04:27 > 0:04:29Stanley, Philip and Daniel? Yeah, that checks out.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32Hidden talent, it says all three of you are gonna prove

0:04:32 > 0:04:34you are who you say you are. How?

0:04:34 > 0:04:38- We're gonna rap.- That's what it says here. OK, right, prove it, then!

0:04:38 > 0:04:41- BEATBOXES - Bless you.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45RAPS: My name is Dan I am the man...

0:04:45 > 0:04:48- He's deflated!- RAPS: My best mate Philip and my best mate Stan

0:04:48 > 0:04:50If you see us in the park or you see us in the street

0:04:50 > 0:04:53If you wanna meet the winners it's us you're gonna meet!

0:04:53 > 0:04:57Fair enough! That was a rap, I reckon so.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59APPLAUSE AND CHEERS

0:05:01 > 0:05:03That's all it took, you see!

0:05:03 > 0:05:05You have to prove who you are before I let you in.

0:05:05 > 0:05:10- Where have you come from? - Kent...and we are the Golden Eagles!

0:05:10 > 0:05:13Well, you're very loud but you're the Red Team and that's final!

0:05:13 > 0:05:14Welcome to Blast Lab.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18Reds and Yellows, we're gonna be doing round one in a second,

0:05:18 > 0:05:20so go over there, get settled in.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22Good luck to both teams. I've noticed something.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25It's a boys' team and a girls' team today.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27I'm expecting the competition to be high.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30Right, let's bring on my assistant. He is so clever,

0:05:30 > 0:05:34the only thing higher than his IQ is the number on his milometer!

0:05:34 > 0:05:35It is of course, Oliver!

0:05:52 > 0:05:55APPLAUSE AND CHEERS

0:05:55 > 0:06:00Now this, this is Oliver's hi-tech state-of-the-art Fact Nav.

0:06:00 > 0:06:03All the facts in the world are stored in it. It's brilliant!

0:06:03 > 0:06:08Unfortunately, I fitted it, so it doesn't work. Well, not very well.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11Sometimes the facts are true sometimes they're false,

0:06:11 > 0:06:15so I need my two teams to decide which are true and which are false.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19Fortunately, Oliver is cleverer than me and he knows the answers anyway,

0:06:19 > 0:06:21so if it is true, he'll do this...

0:06:21 > 0:06:24SIRENS AND WHIRRS

0:06:24 > 0:06:27And if our science fact is false, he'll tell us by doing this...

0:06:27 > 0:06:29HORN BLARES

0:06:29 > 0:06:31OK. This, then, is Round One.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35Teams, your first chance to earn points here in the Blast Lab.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37Are you all settled and comfortable? Nervous?

0:06:37 > 0:06:39You all seem very calm.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41Daniel, you're the only one. Good luck!

0:06:41 > 0:06:43Here comes the first fact.

0:06:43 > 0:06:47Reds, you go first. I need you to tell me if this is true or false.

0:06:47 > 0:06:51Human eyes get bigger the colder the weather gets.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53At 20 degrees, they're the size of tennis balls.

0:06:53 > 0:06:57Have a chat, have a think. Audience, tell me, is that true or false?

0:06:57 > 0:06:59Audience, what do you think? Shout it out!

0:06:59 > 0:07:02AUDIENCE: False!

0:07:03 > 0:07:06Fairly clear decision from the audience, there.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09- False.- You're going with false? Now is that because of what you believe,

0:07:09 > 0:07:11or did you listen to the audience?

0:07:11 > 0:07:13- False! - What you believe? Do you all agree?

0:07:13 > 0:07:17- Yes.- Are you all in agreement on that, Stanley?- Yeah!- Philip?- Yeah.

0:07:17 > 0:07:21OK, OK. You think it's false? Oliver, is it true or false?

0:07:21 > 0:07:23- HORN BLARES - It is false!

0:07:23 > 0:07:26That's a point to the Reds straightaway. Well done!

0:07:28 > 0:07:32Right, Yellows, your turn. This is your science fact.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35Is it true or false?

0:07:35 > 0:07:39Water can cut through steel. True or false?

0:07:39 > 0:07:43Have a chat, think about it, girls. Audience, is it true or false?

0:07:43 > 0:07:46What do you think? Is that true or false?

0:07:46 > 0:07:49Ooh, split the audience down the middle, that one!

0:07:49 > 0:07:51Everyone here thinks it's true,

0:07:51 > 0:07:54quite a few down there thinking it's false.

0:07:54 > 0:07:56Alice, Katie, Kristy, what do you think?

0:07:56 > 0:07:59You're the ones playing for a point. You're one behind already.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03- No pressure, just reminding you of that! What do you think?- False!

0:08:03 > 0:08:05- You think it's...- No, true; sorry!

0:08:05 > 0:08:08That was a quick mind-change from the girls' team!

0:08:08 > 0:08:11- Are you going with true? - Yeah!- Final answer?- Yeah!

0:08:11 > 0:08:14- Not gonna change?- No!- Are you sure you're not gonna change?- I'm sure!

0:08:14 > 0:08:16OK. Oliver, is it true or false?

0:08:16 > 0:08:19- SIREN AND WHIRRS - It is true! Point to the Yellows!

0:08:19 > 0:08:22APPLAUSE AND CHEERS

0:08:22 > 0:08:25They actually use water jet tools to cut through metal

0:08:25 > 0:08:29and it goes at such a high pressure it's 30 times the speed of the water

0:08:29 > 0:08:31that you use to clean your car,

0:08:31 > 0:08:34so, if you ever get one of those water pressure jet tools,

0:08:34 > 0:08:37don't clean the car with it! You'll cut straight through it!

0:08:37 > 0:08:38Right, the third question.

0:08:38 > 0:08:41This is the one I don't need a true or false answer for.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44I need a proper answer. OK, teams?

0:08:44 > 0:08:47I'll give the points to the team that gets closest.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50It doesn't have to be bang-on. Here's the question.

0:08:50 > 0:08:55How many rivets hold up the Eiffel Tower in Paris?

0:08:55 > 0:08:58I know, it's easy! Sometimes I worry these are too easy.

0:08:58 > 0:09:02I know that your face there, Daniel, is telling me that it's too easy!

0:09:02 > 0:09:06Have a chat, have a chat! Teams, have a talk between you.

0:09:06 > 0:09:07Audience, anybody got a clue?

0:09:07 > 0:09:11I'm coming over to talk to you in this new health-conscious age.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14You'll think this is a pineapple, but what I've done here

0:09:14 > 0:09:19is very clever - it's also a microphone! Very hi-tech!

0:09:19 > 0:09:22It also counts as one of your five a day so it's...

0:09:22 > 0:09:25What do you think? How many rivets hold up the Eiffel Tower?

0:09:25 > 0:09:27- About 200,000.- 200,000?- Yeah!

0:09:27 > 0:09:30- Do you know that, or is it a complete guess?- Complete guess!

0:09:30 > 0:09:33If we're honest, what else could it be?

0:09:33 > 0:09:35- Maybe somebody who knows!- Er...

0:09:35 > 0:09:39Does anybody here know the answer? Anybody been to the Eiffel Tower?

0:09:39 > 0:09:42- Yeah.- Well, why didn't you count the rivets for us?!

0:09:42 > 0:09:46- How many did you think there were? You've seen it!- About 8,000.

0:09:46 > 0:09:508,000 rivets? Any advance on that? Any different answers? No?

0:09:50 > 0:09:52You're impressed with this, though, aren't you?

0:09:52 > 0:09:54You see it's the latest in fruit technology.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57I made it here in the Blast Lab. Just look at that.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00You'd never see the microphone, either.

0:10:00 > 0:10:02- Yes, how many do you think? - A billion?- A billion?

0:10:02 > 0:10:04We've got quite a range going on here.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07OK, I think it's time to see what our teams think.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11I can see scribbling going on so we're writing down answers, clearly.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15I'll put this pineapple microphone here -

0:10:15 > 0:10:17if anybody is from the world of marketing and wants to

0:10:17 > 0:10:20come and talk to me about taking it worldwide, it's there!

0:10:20 > 0:10:23OK, Reds, you've got an answer written down.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26Yellows, have you as well? OK, both teams turn your boards round.

0:10:26 > 0:10:29Show them all to us! Let's have a look at what you've got.

0:10:29 > 0:10:31Reds have gone for 5,000,

0:10:31 > 0:10:34Yellows, 9,500.

0:10:34 > 0:10:36The actual answer is...

0:10:36 > 0:10:38fairly close.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40It's, er, two and a half million rivets,

0:10:40 > 0:10:43which means the point goes to the Yellow Team.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46- There you go! - APPLAUSE AND CHEERS

0:10:48 > 0:10:51Two and a half million! When they built it,

0:10:51 > 0:10:55you needed four men to put each rivet in

0:10:55 > 0:10:58because you had to heat it up and then a bloke had to hold it in place

0:10:58 > 0:11:00and then another bloke had to shape the head

0:11:00 > 0:11:02and another beat it in with a sledgehammer.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04Two and a half million of them!

0:11:04 > 0:11:06Right, so the scores now are...

0:11:06 > 0:11:09- Two-one to the Yellows! - APPLAUSE AND CHEERS

0:11:24 > 0:11:28That's all to come. Right now, it's time for Mini Science

0:11:28 > 0:11:30and our teams are gonna get practical.

0:11:30 > 0:11:31To help with this, please welcome

0:11:31 > 0:11:34my old science teacher from school, it is Mini Miss.

0:11:36 > 0:11:41- Good day, Richard.- Good day, Miss. She taught me everything I know.

0:11:41 > 0:11:42That's not saying much, is it?

0:11:42 > 0:11:45Not really, especially not about time machines.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48I built a time machine to bring my science teacher here

0:11:48 > 0:11:51to Blast Lab from school and I messed it up.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54She's actually 65 but that's why she now looks ten years old!

0:11:54 > 0:11:57Luckily, though, she's as wise as ever she was.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00Of course I am! I know everything about nuclear physics!

0:12:00 > 0:12:03Indeed you do, Miss. So, what is today's experiment?

0:12:03 > 0:12:05Today we're going to be

0:12:05 > 0:12:08looking at the behaviour of light, using lasers.

0:12:08 > 0:12:09Right, does that stand for

0:12:09 > 0:12:13"Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation"?

0:12:13 > 0:12:15- Yes, that's right, Richard, well done!- Good.

0:12:15 > 0:12:17What are we doing with lasers?

0:12:17 > 0:12:20Well, the teams are going to play a game called Prism Break

0:12:20 > 0:12:26and the aim of the game is to get the rat released from its cage.

0:12:26 > 0:12:30- This is a rat in here?- Yes. - Right, OK. How do they do that?

0:12:30 > 0:12:33The teams are going to have to fire a laser into the maze

0:12:33 > 0:12:36and then change its direction by using mirrors.

0:12:36 > 0:12:41Once it has reflected off the mirrors,

0:12:41 > 0:12:43it should reflect onto the prism,

0:12:43 > 0:12:46which will open the door to the cage and release the rat.

0:12:46 > 0:12:49The teams have to use all their mirrors available, though,

0:12:49 > 0:12:53and the team to release their rat first, wins the game.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55So it's a race? OK, the little mirrors -

0:12:55 > 0:12:59they've got to use all of these and I happen to have a laser here.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01So you can see how these reflect.

0:13:01 > 0:13:05So that's the laser just pointing against that end wall there

0:13:05 > 0:13:09and if I reflect it with the mirror, there you go, it's fairly simple -

0:13:09 > 0:13:12it bounces around the place, reflects off the mirror.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15The difficult bit is working your way through the maze with the laser.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17OK, well that sounds pretty simple.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20Teams, if you'd like to get into position and ready,

0:13:20 > 0:13:22Mini Miss and I will step out of your way

0:13:22 > 0:13:26because I think there's going to be some competition, Miss.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28Boys' team, girls' team. Both teams wanna win.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31OK, teams, you have, well, as long as it takes.

0:13:31 > 0:13:35It is a straight race, after all, and that race starts...

0:13:35 > 0:13:37Now!

0:13:52 > 0:13:55This is not as easy as it looks.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58Actually, it does look quite difficult, and it is,

0:13:58 > 0:14:01especially as the room seems to be filling with smoke,

0:14:01 > 0:14:05which might help us see the lasers, but very little else!

0:14:05 > 0:14:09Not that very long ago, lasers were only ever seen in sci-fi movies.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12Now they're everywhere, places you wouldn't expect to see them.

0:14:12 > 0:14:16The machine that scans the barcode in the supermarket, that's a laser.

0:14:16 > 0:14:18They seal wounds in surgery with lasers

0:14:18 > 0:14:20and they cut through metal with lasers.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23They can be small, like the one in a CD player,

0:14:23 > 0:14:25or they can be very, very big.

0:14:25 > 0:14:28The most powerful laser in the world can exert a pressure

0:14:28 > 0:14:32the equivalent of ten aircraft carriers balanced on your thumb,

0:14:32 > 0:14:35so it's best to be careful!

0:14:36 > 0:14:39How are we doing? How's it going, Reds?

0:14:39 > 0:14:42- Reds, how's it going?- Not well!

0:14:42 > 0:14:44- Why not? Struggling?- Yep.

0:14:47 > 0:14:49I thought you guys had made a plan?

0:14:49 > 0:14:52- We had, but it's not working!- OK, OK.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58- Yellows, how are you doing? - Not very well!

0:14:58 > 0:15:01Yep, they've messed up. I'm gonna get out of their way.

0:15:01 > 0:15:03Have they done it?

0:15:03 > 0:15:05The Red Team have done it!

0:15:05 > 0:15:07APPLAUSE AND CHEERS

0:15:07 > 0:15:10The Red Team solved the maze and released their rat,

0:15:10 > 0:15:12which takes the score to two-all.

0:15:12 > 0:15:15APPLAUSE AND CHEERS

0:15:15 > 0:15:18All that we've just done was based on light reflecting off objects

0:15:18 > 0:15:22but things can do something else with light. They can absorb it.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25And that calls for another experiment, only this time,

0:15:25 > 0:15:27I think we should have a bigger laser.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33We're going under the cover of darkness.

0:15:37 > 0:15:42Because that's where we keep our special Blast Lab laser pen.

0:15:52 > 0:15:56No normal person would be stupid enough to operate this equipment

0:15:56 > 0:15:59so we've brought in our very own laser lab rat,

0:15:59 > 0:16:02expertly trained and infinitely replaceable,

0:16:02 > 0:16:04to conduct the experiment.

0:16:04 > 0:16:08We're going to find out what happens when you fire a laser beam

0:16:08 > 0:16:11at different coloured balloons.

0:16:11 > 0:16:13Firstly, a red balloon.

0:16:15 > 0:16:19In scientific terms, it's gone bang.

0:16:19 > 0:16:21Now, a green balloon.

0:16:24 > 0:16:28By scientific comparison, it hasn't gone bang.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31This is down to colour absorption.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33We see a green balloon as green

0:16:33 > 0:16:36because it absorbs all the colours except for green.

0:16:36 > 0:16:39And it's the same for the red balloon -

0:16:39 > 0:16:42this absorbs all the colours except for red,

0:16:42 > 0:16:45and because our laser is green,

0:16:45 > 0:16:48this means when our laser is shone on the green balloon,

0:16:48 > 0:16:51it's not absorbed and the balloon doesn't pop,

0:16:51 > 0:16:53but when our green laser is shone on the red balloon,

0:16:53 > 0:16:57it is absorbed, heating up the balloon until it goes bang!

0:16:59 > 0:17:04Let's try one more experiment, with the help of this laser expert.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07Hello. I'm a laser expert.

0:17:07 > 0:17:10He's going to fire a laser at two red balloons.

0:17:10 > 0:17:14One is being held by a teddy bear behind a red plastic screen

0:17:14 > 0:17:18and the other by this handsome young chap behind a green screen.

0:17:18 > 0:17:22And he's going to blast them with this giant laser machine.

0:17:22 > 0:17:26It gives out as much power as a nuclear power station

0:17:26 > 0:17:27in just a billionth of a second

0:17:27 > 0:17:30and it's so bright that without protection,

0:17:30 > 0:17:33it will make everyone in the building go permanently blind.

0:17:33 > 0:17:37So with anti-blindness goggles on, we're ready for action.

0:17:38 > 0:17:42OK, hold that experiment right there. It's a draw right now -

0:17:42 > 0:17:45two points to the Reds, two points to the Yellows.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48For an extra point, what happens now? Which balloon bursts?

0:17:48 > 0:17:50Does either balloon burst?

0:17:50 > 0:17:53Maybe neither balloon bursts, maybe they both burst?

0:17:53 > 0:17:56Have a quick chat, think what might be about to happen.

0:17:56 > 0:17:58Audience, anybody got any clue?

0:17:58 > 0:18:01You saw what happened to a red balloon and a green balloon,

0:18:01 > 0:18:04they're both behind screens. What do we think?

0:18:04 > 0:18:05Hang on!

0:18:05 > 0:18:10I shall bring my amazing pineapple microphone down there...yes?

0:18:10 > 0:18:15I think the one with the teddy bear is gonna burst because it's...

0:18:15 > 0:18:18Because it's red and the one with the man

0:18:18 > 0:18:21is not gonna burst because the man's green.

0:18:21 > 0:18:24But we're behind the screens, remember, that's what changed here.

0:18:24 > 0:18:28I think the teddy bear was a red herring, if you see what I mean.

0:18:28 > 0:18:29Any other answers over here?

0:18:29 > 0:18:33Let's have a think. Anybody got any ideas? Have you got any ideas?

0:18:33 > 0:18:36- Yeah, I have.- It's all right, I can hold it, don't worry.

0:18:36 > 0:18:39- I think basically that the green one might pop as well.- Why?

0:18:39 > 0:18:42Because like it's a stronger laser, and...

0:18:42 > 0:18:47- You think that the stronger laser might make a difference?- Yeah.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50- OK.- I think that what might happen, though,

0:18:50 > 0:18:54if you get another different-coloured laser it might burst the green one.

0:18:54 > 0:18:57But I think this might be the same colour, be another green one.

0:18:57 > 0:19:00But you've obviously been paying attention down here. Yes?

0:19:00 > 0:19:04I think the balloon teddy bear is gonna pop,

0:19:04 > 0:19:06but the one behind the green screen isn't.

0:19:06 > 0:19:08Hang on. Do you think the teddy bear

0:19:08 > 0:19:11- has got anything to do with this, or is it just...?- OK, the balloon!

0:19:11 > 0:19:14Right, OK, OK. Well, let's find out what our teams think.

0:19:14 > 0:19:15No, the teddy bear.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18- You think the teddy bear's gonna blow up?- No!- Well, it might!

0:19:18 > 0:19:21Teams, have we come to conclusions?

0:19:21 > 0:19:24- Yeah.- What do you think, Reds?

0:19:24 > 0:19:26- Both!- Both. - You think both are gonna explode?

0:19:26 > 0:19:30- I think the green one.- You think the green one?- The green screen.

0:19:30 > 0:19:33OK. So Reds think both are gonna go, Yellows think the green balloon.

0:19:33 > 0:19:38Before this becomes too complicated and confusing, let's have a look.

0:19:38 > 0:19:40Let's find out.

0:19:41 > 0:19:44OK, it's the balloon behind the red screen first.

0:19:44 > 0:19:46Stand by.

0:19:46 > 0:19:50Ready...aim...

0:19:50 > 0:19:52Fire!

0:19:54 > 0:19:56Nothing! Zilch!

0:19:56 > 0:19:59The red screen has absorbed the green laser.

0:19:59 > 0:20:01Let's try the one behind the green screen.

0:20:01 > 0:20:02Ready...aim...

0:20:02 > 0:20:04Fire!

0:20:05 > 0:20:07That's more like it!

0:20:07 > 0:20:11Our green laser has not been absorbed by the green screen

0:20:11 > 0:20:13and has passed through to burst the red balloon,

0:20:13 > 0:20:16while the other balloon remains intact.

0:20:18 > 0:20:20Well, that result then is a point for the Yellows.

0:20:20 > 0:20:22That means it's at 3-2 to the Yellows

0:20:22 > 0:20:25and it's time for us to move on towards the final test,

0:20:25 > 0:20:27the Messy Messy Mess Test.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30Both teams go off and get changed into their protective outfits.

0:20:30 > 0:20:34Because it's time for all of us to get messy,

0:20:34 > 0:20:36for the Messy Messy Mess Test.

0:20:39 > 0:20:44Which today is the Gungy Bungy, featuring my Blast Lab Catapults,

0:20:44 > 0:20:49originally designed and built by me for airborne cat transportation,

0:20:49 > 0:20:52and a complete disaster. However, we've found a better use for them.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55Today, we're gonna use them for propelling projectiles

0:20:55 > 0:20:58across the Toxic Tank to the Prize Zone beyond,

0:20:58 > 0:21:01and that's a clue because that, teams, is what you've got to do.

0:21:01 > 0:21:03Get as many of these as you possibly can - Prize Pods -

0:21:03 > 0:21:06into the Prize Zone on the other side of the tank.

0:21:06 > 0:21:09But this being Blast Lab, there is, of course, a twist.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12Each team has one of its members representing them

0:21:12 > 0:21:15standing here in the Toxic Tank. Are you OK there? Comfortable?

0:21:15 > 0:21:18Good, good! Lab Rat, have you got it yet, by the way?

0:21:18 > 0:21:20Not caught it? Yeah!

0:21:20 > 0:21:24Late last night I saw a fin and probably some claws,

0:21:24 > 0:21:27pincers maybe, a lot of teeth.

0:21:27 > 0:21:29Forget it, we've got to get on with the game. Don't worry!

0:21:29 > 0:21:32Just don't go beyond this tape.

0:21:32 > 0:21:35That's there for your own safety and probably its.

0:21:35 > 0:21:37What you have to do is get as many of these Prize Pods

0:21:37 > 0:21:39over the tank past these guys,

0:21:39 > 0:21:41because you've got two jobs in the tank there,

0:21:41 > 0:21:45because one of your jobs is to stop the opposing team's Prize Pods

0:21:45 > 0:21:47as they go over the tank, knock them out the tank.

0:21:47 > 0:21:51Your other job is to collect your team's Prize Pods if they fall in,

0:21:51 > 0:21:54return them to these baskets so they can be fired once again,

0:21:54 > 0:21:55try and get them in the Prize Zone.

0:21:55 > 0:21:59The winning team is whoever gets the most Prize Pods into that zone,

0:21:59 > 0:22:03and you will get to take home all the prizes written on them -

0:22:03 > 0:22:06things like Plug & Play electronics, Bionic Helicopter, MP3 player.

0:22:06 > 0:22:11Every team member will take those home. The losing team...won't.

0:22:11 > 0:22:15Now, Yellows, you are in the lead on points right now,

0:22:15 > 0:22:16so you get to start first.

0:22:16 > 0:22:19Your points have brought you a five-second advantage, OK?

0:22:19 > 0:22:22When you hear the first siren, you start.

0:22:22 > 0:22:25Reds, wait until you hear the second siren, then you start.

0:22:25 > 0:22:29You have Some Time to get as many Prize Pods across the Toxic Tank

0:22:29 > 0:22:32as you can and that Some Time starts...now!

0:22:34 > 0:22:37So, it's the Yellows who have the advantage in today's game.

0:22:39 > 0:22:44I think that's the highest Prize Pod shot I've ever seen in my life!

0:22:44 > 0:22:47It's possibly also the most inaccurate shot

0:22:47 > 0:22:49I've ever seen as well, ever!

0:22:50 > 0:22:54The Red pods seem to be drawn to the Prize Zone like moths to a flame,

0:22:54 > 0:22:57but I can see a number of Yellows as well,

0:22:57 > 0:23:00so we have a real match on our hands today!

0:23:02 > 0:23:04A perfectly balanced game!

0:23:06 > 0:23:08Maybe I spoke too soon -

0:23:08 > 0:23:11another crazy sky shot from the Yellows!

0:23:14 > 0:23:18The teams showing us the importance of wearing safety helmets today!

0:23:21 > 0:23:23Meanwhile, the Reds are keeping up the pressure

0:23:23 > 0:23:26with a sustained barrage of pods overhead.

0:23:26 > 0:23:28They are a machine!

0:23:35 > 0:23:39And the Reds are about to load their final pod.

0:23:39 > 0:23:41And there he flies!

0:23:43 > 0:23:46And it's bang on target! The Reds are celebrating already!

0:23:46 > 0:23:53The Yellows are frantic! Do they have enough Some Time to draw level?

0:23:53 > 0:23:57I think we have our answer.

0:23:58 > 0:24:00Time's up!

0:24:02 > 0:24:05Time is up and I think from the reactions, we can guess the results.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08Let's find out which team has won.

0:24:08 > 0:24:10How many have the Yellows got? 5 for the Yellow Team.

0:24:10 > 0:24:12The Reds, how many have they got?

0:24:12 > 0:24:1310 for the Red Team!

0:24:13 > 0:24:15That means the Red Team are the winners!

0:24:15 > 0:24:17APPLAUSE AND CHEERS

0:24:17 > 0:24:21So Reds, these are the prizes each of you will be taking home with you.

0:24:21 > 0:24:23You will each be taking home...

0:24:23 > 0:24:24Ready, Nan?

0:24:24 > 0:24:27A crystal growing kit.

0:24:27 > 0:24:30An X-Twin Jet.

0:24:30 > 0:24:32Transforming Robots.

0:24:32 > 0:24:34MP3 Player.

0:24:34 > 0:24:37A bionic helicopter.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40Horrible Science book.

0:24:40 > 0:24:43Plug & play electronics.

0:24:43 > 0:24:4620 Questions.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49Lunar eclipse bedroom light.

0:24:49 > 0:24:52And night vision goggles.

0:24:52 > 0:24:54Every one of those for you!

0:24:54 > 0:24:57In short, everything in the Blast Lab, apart from the Lab Rats,

0:24:57 > 0:25:01which I'll be stuck with. Right, Yellows, this is slightly trickier,

0:25:01 > 0:25:05because now we find out what you would have been taking home. Sorry!

0:25:05 > 0:25:10This is not a contented face, there. I'm sorry!

0:25:10 > 0:25:13Never mind! Let's see what you would have been taking home, but aren't!

0:25:13 > 0:25:17- OK. You would have been taking home MP3 player...- Aww!

0:25:17 > 0:25:19Yeah, I know!

0:25:19 > 0:25:22- Plug and play electronics...- Aww! - Yep, yep, yep, yep.

0:25:22 > 0:25:26- Night vision goggles...- Aww! - Oh, the fun...

0:25:26 > 0:25:29- X-Twin Jet...- Aww!

0:25:29 > 0:25:32- 20 Questions, yep!- Aww!

0:25:32 > 0:25:35But it's OK, Yellows, because instead of taking them home,

0:25:35 > 0:25:37- you're gonna blow them up!- Whoo!

0:25:37 > 0:25:40It's time for Bidet Goes Bang!

0:25:47 > 0:25:51OK, well here we are, that strange moment once again.

0:25:51 > 0:25:53The Yellow Team are...all right.

0:25:53 > 0:25:56The Red Team, by contrast, are really quite happy,

0:25:56 > 0:25:58because you cleaned out my Blast Lab.

0:25:58 > 0:26:01These are all your prizes - congratulations, well played.

0:26:01 > 0:26:03You're taking just about everything

0:26:03 > 0:26:06but a couple of Lab Rats and my lab coat.

0:26:06 > 0:26:07All of those prizes are yours!

0:26:07 > 0:26:11Over here, Yellows, how are we feeling, team?

0:26:11 > 0:26:13A bit upset!

0:26:13 > 0:26:16Yeah, yeah, well yes, it's never brilliant to lose.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18What went wrong in that game?

0:26:18 > 0:26:22Well, Katie couldn't reach it, and I didn't pull back far enough.

0:26:22 > 0:26:25It's not the easiest of games. I'm really sorry.

0:26:25 > 0:26:27- Who's gonna push the plunger? - All of us!

0:26:27 > 0:26:30You're gonna do it together? Share the blame?

0:26:30 > 0:26:31I think that's probably best.

0:26:31 > 0:26:35Right then, toilets flush, baths gurgle, but bidets go bang!

0:26:35 > 0:26:37So, let's see it in action.

0:26:37 > 0:26:39It's loaded up with your prizes. Ready?

0:26:39 > 0:26:42Lift the plunger then please, girls, into the firing position.

0:26:42 > 0:26:45Don't press it until we've counted you down. Are we ready?

0:26:45 > 0:26:50Don't look at me like that, Kristy, please! Are we ready?

0:26:50 > 0:26:555...4...3... 2...1!

0:27:00 > 0:27:02That's all we've got time for.

0:27:02 > 0:27:05We've had a good look at light and colour today -

0:27:05 > 0:27:06two things very close to my heart

0:27:06 > 0:27:09because when my Lab Rats leave the lights on overnight,

0:27:09 > 0:27:12it makes me see red! See you next time!

0:27:12 > 0:27:14APPLAUSE AND CHEERS

0:27:21 > 0:27:25Blast Lab was recorded before a live studio audience.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28Not one Lab Rat was harmed during the filming.

0:27:28 > 0:27:30it was most like seven... or was it eight?

0:27:38 > 0:27:41Subtitles by Red Bee Media Ltd
