0:00:02 > 0:00:06'Imogen the giraffe is one of the park's best-loved animals,

0:00:06 > 0:00:09'but now she needs a vital operation

0:00:09 > 0:00:13'and there's always the danger it could go wrong.'

0:00:39 > 0:00:41Hello and welcome to Roar. I'm Rani.

0:00:41 > 0:00:45I'm Johny, I know they say imitation is the highest form of flattery,

0:00:45 > 0:00:48but I think these Polish chickens are taking it a bit far.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50He's nicked my hairstyle!

0:00:50 > 0:00:52I've got to say, Johny, I do prefer theirs.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55- Shall we get on with today's show? - I had it first.

0:00:59 > 0:01:04'Coming up today, it's the A Team verses Genghis Khan and brothers,

0:01:04 > 0:01:07'so who's going to win?'

0:01:07 > 0:01:09They've got some mean tusks on them.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11'Why is Johny going all funny?

0:01:11 > 0:01:16'Just because he's got to pick up some furry little creatures!

0:01:19 > 0:01:22'And Hansel the armadillo is looking for love,

0:01:22 > 0:01:24'and is in a hurry to find it!'

0:01:24 > 0:01:26He's so fast! Look at him!

0:01:32 > 0:01:38'We're starting with giraffes. One of them has a serious problem.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41'Imogen's 15-years-old.

0:01:41 > 0:01:45'She was born here and has been one of the park's biggest characters.

0:01:45 > 0:01:50'Over the years she's had two babies, Henry and Kaiser,

0:01:50 > 0:01:53'and she was a great mum.

0:01:53 > 0:01:58'It's not surprising that Imogen is a real favourite with the keepers.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00'Here's Ryan.'

0:02:00 > 0:02:04Imogen's important to the giraffes, not just as a brooding female,

0:02:04 > 0:02:08but also just as a sound, steady member.

0:02:10 > 0:02:15'There's another reason that Imogen has a place in everyone's heart.

0:02:15 > 0:02:20'Years ago there was a time when they thought she was about to die.

0:02:20 > 0:02:24'She was pregnant, but there were problems,

0:02:24 > 0:02:29'so she had an emergency Caesarean operation to get the baby out.

0:02:29 > 0:02:33'The keeper in charge, Andy, was expecting the worst.'

0:02:33 > 0:02:37Immy's been through the biggest operation when we did the Caesarean.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40We actually thought she wasn't going to make it through.

0:02:40 > 0:02:46And, bless her heart, she did. She's a bit of a survivor, old Immy.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49'Like everyone else who was there,

0:02:49 > 0:02:51'deputy warden Ian never forgot that day.'

0:02:51 > 0:02:54All the giraffes are special,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57but Imogen is a bit special because of the Caesarean stuff.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00We went through all that trouble and she's such a fighter.

0:03:00 > 0:03:05'But now she's got a new problem. Andy has called in Chris, the vet.'

0:03:05 > 0:03:10Today we're looking at Imogen, who is one of the older giraffes.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13She's had bad feet for a while now and one have them is really sore,

0:03:13 > 0:03:16so she's not putting any weight on one of her front feet.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21'Imogen has had a touch of arthritis for some time.

0:03:21 > 0:03:25'That makes her legs ache, so she just doesn't walk around very much,

0:03:25 > 0:03:27'which means her hooves don't get worn down

0:03:27 > 0:03:31'and that's what has caused the problem now.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34The trouble is, once that toe overgrows they rock on the heel.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37And you can see the way she's moving is just awkward for her.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40'Overgrown hooves are very serious.

0:03:40 > 0:03:44'If they don't do something, Imogen will be in agony, unable to walk.'

0:03:44 > 0:03:48What we're going to do is we're going to is anaesthetise Imogen

0:03:48 > 0:03:50knock her down and trim her feet

0:03:50 > 0:03:53because her hooves on her feet are really becoming quite overgrown.

0:03:53 > 0:03:58'The keepers have their own slang, so when Andy says "knock her down",

0:03:58 > 0:04:03'what he's talking about is sending her to sleep with an anaesthetic.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06'And that can be dangerous.'

0:04:06 > 0:04:08There's always a risk with anaesthesia.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Whatever you knock down, be it a guinea pig up to a giraffe,

0:04:11 > 0:04:13elephant, rhino, there's a risk.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17Giraffes seem to be one of the more hard animals to do.

0:04:17 > 0:04:21We try to make sure it's as safe and successful as possible.

0:04:22 > 0:04:26'The risk is very high because giraffes

0:04:26 > 0:04:28'can have extreme reactions to anaesthetic,

0:04:28 > 0:04:31'but they've got no choice.'

0:04:31 > 0:04:34The procedure's vital because the way her feet are growing

0:04:34 > 0:04:37is affecting the rest of her leg.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39It's like wearing shoes that don't fit.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41If you chiselled half your shoe off, you'd walk funny

0:04:41 > 0:04:45and it would affect all the rest of the bones, so it has to be done.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48If a wild giraffe had the problems Imogen had, she'd be lion food.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52'But now Chris, the vet, is ready.

0:04:52 > 0:04:57'A team has been assembled and the procedure is about to start.

0:04:57 > 0:05:01'The park's Head of Animals, John Cracknell, is a vet, too.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03'He'll be in charge of anaesthetic.

0:05:03 > 0:05:07'Imogen is being kept inside the Giraffe House.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09'It's vital she's perfectly relaxed

0:05:09 > 0:05:12'while they're giving her the anaesthetic.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15'If she's stressed because they are strangers around,

0:05:15 > 0:05:17'she might try to fight the drug.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19'So, our film crew must wait outside

0:05:19 > 0:05:23'until after Imogen has been sent to sleep.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28'But then we're going in, so don't go away.

0:05:35 > 0:05:41'In our last series we met Hansel and Gretel, the armadillos.

0:05:41 > 0:05:46'Since then, sadly, Gretel has died, leaving Hansel all alone.'

0:05:46 > 0:05:49Now, we all need a bit of care and attention and Hansel here,

0:05:49 > 0:05:52well, he's on the hunt for a new mate,

0:05:52 > 0:05:55so me and Sarah are going to make sure he's on top form.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57What do we need to do for him today?

0:05:57 > 0:05:59We're going to give him a health check and weigh him,

0:05:59 > 0:06:01make sure he's all right.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04How to weigh him? It's too small to put him in, that bowl!

0:06:04 > 0:06:08It's quite hard to weigh an armadillo because they just roll around,

0:06:08 > 0:06:11so I've got this little bowl to keep him still.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14There's no way he's getting in there, Sarah, look at that!

0:06:14 > 0:06:18You're not getting in there, are you, Hansel? "I'm not, Rani!" OK.

0:06:18 > 0:06:23If you just pop him down on the top, that should keep him...

0:06:23 > 0:06:26- He's just going to unravel. - It should be all right.

0:06:26 > 0:06:29- You have to be quick. - Do you want me to let go?

0:06:29 > 0:06:31- Yeah, yeah.- Really? - Yeah, go on.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34Is that a good weight for an armadillo?

0:06:34 > 0:06:36Yeah, that's normally what he weighs.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39So he's not losing and not gaining, which is ideal.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43Do we pick him back up again or what do we do? He's so warm.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45I love him. Oh! And he's strong.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47You are strong, aren't you, hairy man? Yes.

0:06:47 > 0:06:51What's the next thing we need to do to make sure he's on top form?

0:06:51 > 0:06:53We'll just give him a little look over.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55check his eyes are nice and bright.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58Check his nose that there's no discharge coming out.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00Make sure his ears are nice and clean.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03Eyes, nose, all good. So, what's the next plan for him?

0:07:03 > 0:07:06So, we'll just pop him on the floor and give him

0:07:06 > 0:07:09a run around and maybe see if he wants some mealworms, as well.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11We're saying a little run around.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14We should point out, there's nobody in this room apart from our crew.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17We'd all better watch our feet. Is he fast?

0:07:17 > 0:07:22Yeah, he is very fast, actually, we'll keep a close eye on him.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25Everybody watch where you trod, we're going to put Hansel down.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27He needs a bit of exercise.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29And off he goes!

0:07:30 > 0:07:34It's like we've wound him up and he's off! He is amazing!

0:07:34 > 0:07:36Awww!

0:07:36 > 0:07:39Is he going to go through? He's going to go through the doors!

0:07:39 > 0:07:43- He's going to go through the doors! - It's all right, it's OK.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46He's not trying to escape.

0:07:46 > 0:07:47He's really fast.

0:07:47 > 0:07:51He's not doing a lot, so it's nice for him to come and run around

0:07:51 > 0:07:53and give him something new to explore.

0:07:53 > 0:07:57He's so fast, look at him! Look at those legs!

0:07:57 > 0:07:59It's almost like they're blurring.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03Here he comes, here he comes, here he comes, here he comes, !

0:08:03 > 0:08:06I mean, what makes a good armadillo partner for him?

0:08:06 > 0:08:08A female roughly his age,

0:08:08 > 0:08:11because if you want to breed them it would be important.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15He's about two and-a-half, this one. But that's it, really.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17As long as the female's in good health as well,

0:08:17 > 0:08:20like he is, then they should mix in really well.

0:08:20 > 0:08:24But you've got to sell him. So, he's caring, he's playful.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27He has got a lot of character. He's a funny little thing.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29He runs around, bumps into things.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31He can be a bit clumsy sometimes.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35So, if you're an armadillo out there and you like the sound of Hansel,

0:08:35 > 0:08:38get in touch with Roar and I think we've got you a date.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40Come on, let's go and catch him.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49'Anteaters don't have any teeth.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54'They mainly eat bugs and, instead of chewing,

0:08:54 > 0:08:57'they just crush them in their mouths.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01'Over the course of a lifetime,

0:09:01 > 0:09:03'this must save a lot of time.

0:09:03 > 0:09:05'Just think, if an anteater lives for 25 years,

0:09:05 > 0:09:12'that would be 26 days, eight hours and 40 minutes

0:09:12 > 0:09:15'that they don't have to spend brushing their teeth.'

0:09:29 > 0:09:32It's time for another Ask The Keeper.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36And looking almost as tough as these lions are their keeper,

0:09:36 > 0:09:39big, bad, Bob Trollope.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41HEAVY METAL MUSIC

0:09:44 > 0:09:48You're looking tough, but are you tough enough to take on this?

0:09:48 > 0:09:50Well, I don't know.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53Guys, are you ready to ask him some questions?

0:09:53 > 0:09:55Yes.

0:09:55 > 0:09:56OK, who's going to be first, then?

0:09:56 > 0:09:59What's the average size of a newborn baby lion?

0:09:59 > 0:10:02They're very, very small, but they grow very, very quickly.

0:10:02 > 0:10:06So weight wise, you're looking at, in kilos, maybe a kilo.

0:10:06 > 0:10:08Not very big at all.

0:10:08 > 0:10:11How old are they when they start hunting?

0:10:11 > 0:10:13Mum won't let the cubs go on a hunt for a long time

0:10:13 > 0:10:15because they get in the way,

0:10:15 > 0:10:19so you're looking at about the age of 18 months

0:10:19 > 0:10:23when they will actually join in with the hunt.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25Why is mum growling like that?

0:10:25 > 0:10:28She's basically just telling us that she's there,

0:10:28 > 0:10:31not to overstep our mark and get too close to her and her cubs.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34- What do they eat now? - They're very good.

0:10:34 > 0:10:36They're on solids, so they actually eat meat.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39We've got some if you want to do some feeding.

0:10:39 > 0:10:43What do you reckon, guys, feeds some lion cubs? That's brilliant.

0:10:43 > 0:10:44How do I feed them?

0:10:44 > 0:10:46Don't hold it in your fingers because,

0:10:46 > 0:10:48obviously, it might be dangerous,

0:10:48 > 0:10:52so we've got a nice stick and we've just skewered one.

0:10:53 > 0:10:57As you can see, this one is already keen to have some meat.

0:10:57 > 0:10:59'This really is a rare treat.

0:10:59 > 0:11:03'We can feed the lion cubs only because Bob is right here.'

0:11:03 > 0:11:06Don't let go of the stick because you'd have to go in and get it!

0:11:06 > 0:11:08Look, there you go!

0:11:10 > 0:11:13Wow! You fed a lion, Nathan.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15How big are mum's teeth?

0:11:15 > 0:11:19Well, mum's canine teeth, those are the long ones at the front,

0:11:19 > 0:11:23the top ones are about five centimetres long.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26- So, that's really, really big. - What are their names?

0:11:26 > 0:11:32There's four cubs here. There are three girls and one boy.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34The little boy is called Klaus,

0:11:34 > 0:11:38and then we have another female that's called Eva,

0:11:38 > 0:11:42one called Tana and one called Kianna.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46They haven't actually had a piece yet, have they?

0:11:46 > 0:11:49If you hold it out and push it in, they'll grab hold of that.

0:11:49 > 0:11:53Ah, you've got it! Do you want to have a go, Johny?

0:11:53 > 0:11:56Yes please. I've been waiting for you to say that!

0:11:56 > 0:11:57There you go.

0:11:57 > 0:12:01Brilliant. I'll give this little one some meat.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04Bob, I have to say, this has been absolutely amazing.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07I almost forgot that we've still got one more question to ask,

0:12:07 > 0:12:09and that one is the Killer Question!

0:12:12 > 0:12:15So, we need a question that's going to make it hard for him to answer.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18OK, come on. Come on!

0:12:18 > 0:12:20Stretch out guys, come on.

0:12:20 > 0:12:22It's time for the Killer Question.

0:12:22 > 0:12:24Right, OK. Here we go, Bob.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27I hope you know your stuff.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29Here you have four healthy lion cubs.

0:12:29 > 0:12:31They are in captivity.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34Out in the wild, the survival rate isn't quite as good.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37How many of your cubs would you expect to survive in the wild?

0:12:38 > 0:12:42Oh, very good. I would say...

0:12:45 > 0:12:47..half.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50You are saying half. You're saying about 50%.

0:12:50 > 0:12:5150%, I reckon.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54You know what, Bob, that's completely right!

0:12:54 > 0:12:57About two of the clubs would survive out in the wild.

0:12:57 > 0:13:01It's about a 50% survival rate. What do you reckon, guys?

0:13:01 > 0:13:02He answered all our questions.

0:13:02 > 0:13:04Is that a claws up or claws down for Bob?

0:13:04 > 0:13:06Claws up all round.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09Let's give him a round of a claws!

0:13:09 > 0:13:10APPLAUSE

0:13:17 > 0:13:20'If Imogen doesn't have her hooves trimmed,

0:13:20 > 0:13:23'she'll soon be in agony and unable to walk.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26'And now the team is ready to sort it out.

0:13:26 > 0:13:31'Imogen has just been sent to sleep with an anaesthetic drug.'

0:13:31 > 0:13:34Immy's gone down a lot faster than we were expecting.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37The drug worked really, really quickly.

0:13:39 > 0:13:40'Now Imogen's asleep,

0:13:40 > 0:13:44'the team moves in and gets straight to work on those hooves.

0:13:49 > 0:13:53'Hooves are just like our toenails, they never stop growing,

0:13:53 > 0:13:57'and it doesn't hurt to cut or file them down.

0:13:57 > 0:14:02'Though, obviously, with giraffes you need much bigger tools.

0:14:06 > 0:14:10'While the team press on, Ian is taking pictures.

0:14:10 > 0:14:12'It's important to record everything,

0:14:12 > 0:14:15'just in case they need to do this sort of operation again

0:14:15 > 0:14:19'and right now the vets don't have time to stop and make notes.'

0:14:19 > 0:14:22Chris is working away on the feet. One of the front feet is done.

0:14:22 > 0:14:27That wasn't bad. Now it's this back foot that's the really overgrown one,

0:14:27 > 0:14:30so Chris is sweating away over this one now.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33Everybody else is massaging her because you can get problems

0:14:33 > 0:14:35when they're down for a long time.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37They get muscle damage, so you want blood flow,

0:14:37 > 0:14:39so when you get her up she hasn't got dead legs.

0:14:39 > 0:14:43Everybody knows what it's like to get pins and needles in your legs.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46If you've got legs that long, it's a real nightmare.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51'Giraffes can suffer unusual side effects from anaesthetic

0:14:51 > 0:14:56'and the longer Imogen is kept under, the greater the risk.

0:14:57 > 0:14:59'While she's down,

0:14:59 > 0:15:02'they're taking the opportunity to give her a health check.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05'The animal dentist is here to take care of her teeth.

0:15:05 > 0:15:12'And as the hooves are trimmed, the team takes an X-ray of each foot

0:15:12 > 0:15:15'to make sure there are no other problems.'

0:15:15 > 0:15:19Everybody is sweating and working hard.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22You want everything done as quickly as you possibly can.

0:15:22 > 0:15:24'One of the hooves is very tough,

0:15:24 > 0:15:29'so Chris uses a wire cutter to get through it as quickly as possible.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32'Everyone knows they're working against the clock.'

0:15:34 > 0:15:36We've trimmed all four feet now.

0:15:36 > 0:15:38The back feet were twisted,

0:15:38 > 0:15:41so we've got them back to what they should look like.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44And the front feet, which take more weight than the back,

0:15:44 > 0:15:48they had some stones and some little abscesses inside so, hopefully,

0:15:48 > 0:15:51we've cut all of that out.

0:15:51 > 0:15:53'When all the jobs are done, Imogen's given a drug

0:15:53 > 0:15:56'that will reverse the effect of the anaesthetic.'

0:15:56 > 0:15:59The worry is always with the coming round bit.

0:15:59 > 0:16:03We know she's fine at the minute the machine is breathing for her,

0:16:03 > 0:16:07but there's always that next bit of time.

0:16:09 > 0:16:11'But, very soon, we'll find out

0:16:11 > 0:16:15'whether or not Imogen has suffered side effects from the anaesthetic.

0:16:15 > 0:16:18'So, now, like everyone else, all we can do is wait.'

0:16:27 > 0:16:30What did the rabbit give his girlfriend for her birthday?

0:16:31 > 0:16:34A 14 carrot ring!

0:16:34 > 0:16:36IMPERSONATES ELEPHANT

0:16:36 > 0:16:39- I'm a hamster and my name is Oliver. - Why are you called Oliver?

0:16:39 > 0:16:43Because when the human lets me out of my cage, I'm Oliver the place!

0:16:43 > 0:16:46IMPERSONATES MONKEY

0:16:46 > 0:16:49What do camels wear to protect themselves?

0:16:49 > 0:16:52I don't know, what do camels wear to protect themselves?

0:16:52 > 0:16:54Camelflage.

0:16:54 > 0:16:57LAUGHTER

0:17:05 > 0:17:10'Genghis Khan, Attila the Hun, and Vlad the Impaler.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13'You'd think with those names the park's three African warthogs

0:17:13 > 0:17:16'would be a little more in your face.

0:17:18 > 0:17:21'But, no, these three brothers are really quite shy.

0:17:21 > 0:17:25'In fact, it's difficult to get a close look at them.'

0:17:25 > 0:17:28Seriously, I'm not having any luck getting close to those warthogs.

0:17:28 > 0:17:32- How about you, keeper Ross? - It's all about your equipment, Rani.

0:17:32 > 0:17:36The man's got a point. That's why we've brought in the Roar A Team!

0:17:41 > 0:17:44Armed with a camera, a log and, of course,

0:17:44 > 0:17:47the trusty carrot, irresistible to warthogs.

0:17:47 > 0:17:50Come on, let's go and find us a warthog!

0:17:59 > 0:18:02A Team, we're ready.

0:18:03 > 0:18:08'To get some close up footage, the Roar A Team have set up an ambush.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11'When the warthogs go for the food we've left out,

0:18:11 > 0:18:14'our spy cameras should get some clear shots.'

0:18:14 > 0:18:17What else do we need to entice the warthogs over?

0:18:17 > 0:18:22We need to be quiet and, also, if we could back off a little bit,

0:18:22 > 0:18:26hopefully, they can get a bit more confident and they'll come closer.

0:18:26 > 0:18:30I can back off, but being quiet has always been tricky for me.

0:18:30 > 0:18:32Right, then, let's back up.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38- Is about here good? - Yeah, this is all right.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42Look at them all eyeballing us!

0:18:48 > 0:18:50'I thought warthogs were supposed to be greedy,

0:18:50 > 0:18:54'but these guys are going nowhere near the food we put out.

0:18:55 > 0:18:59'In fact, they're actually getting closer to us.'

0:18:59 > 0:19:02Ross, I've got to say, them getting closer,

0:19:02 > 0:19:04they've got mean tusks on them.

0:19:04 > 0:19:07Yeah, they're tough animals and they use them for fighting,

0:19:07 > 0:19:10but they usually use their tusks more for burrowing

0:19:10 > 0:19:12and getting foliage from underground.

0:19:12 > 0:19:16'The A Team's ambush hasn't worked,

0:19:16 > 0:19:20'but now the warthogs are getting close enough to get a good look.

0:19:20 > 0:19:22'Maybe a little too close!'

0:19:22 > 0:19:24I've got to admit, I'm getting slightly wary,

0:19:24 > 0:19:28so, I'm going to get out of here and you should get the cameras.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31See you later, warthogs!

0:19:40 > 0:19:43'There are loads of great games on the CBBC website,

0:19:43 > 0:19:46'but the Roar game is the only one

0:19:46 > 0:19:51'where you can get an animal park to look after, so why not give it a go?

0:19:51 > 0:19:55'But right now make a note of this, crystal674.

0:19:55 > 0:19:58'That's today's cheat code

0:19:58 > 0:20:01'and you'll see what it's for when you get to the game.'

0:20:23 > 0:20:26I've popped down to Animal Adventure to help Kim do measuring.

0:20:26 > 0:20:28I've brought my tape measure,

0:20:28 > 0:20:30maybe I should have brought a metre rule, Kim?

0:20:30 > 0:20:33You don't need that at all, Johny, you need this.

0:20:33 > 0:20:375p? Well, thanks for that, Kim, but what are we doing?

0:20:37 > 0:20:40If you come over here I will show you. These are our spiderlings.

0:20:40 > 0:20:42I know you've met a few of them before,

0:20:42 > 0:20:46but we've got some very important stuff that we need to do today.

0:20:46 > 0:20:48If you take a look at this picture over here,

0:20:48 > 0:20:51this is when they were only 12 weeks old,

0:20:51 > 0:20:54you can see I used a five pence piece to show how big they were then.

0:20:54 > 0:20:56- Oh, yeah. - So, it's just a constant.

0:20:56 > 0:20:59Obviously, the 5p hasn't changed, but the spiders have.

0:20:59 > 0:21:01So, that's pretty much to scale.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05That's tiny and that's at 12 weeks. So, are we going to measure them?

0:21:05 > 0:21:08Yeah, we're just going to pop them on the piece of paper next to the 5p,

0:21:08 > 0:21:12and then I can take a picture and I've got it then as proof.

0:21:12 > 0:21:15Johny, are you going to get one out and pop it on the paper?

0:21:15 > 0:21:19This is weird. I've held a tarantula before and I thought I was OK,

0:21:19 > 0:21:22but I think it's going into their territory.

0:21:22 > 0:21:26It's a bit weird. It's different when you're picking them up, isn't it?

0:21:26 > 0:21:29So, if you pop your hands fairly flat in front of her.

0:21:29 > 0:21:30Yeah.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33I can move her around to an area where she's...

0:21:33 > 0:21:35That's it, and then just from behind.

0:21:37 > 0:21:40As long as she's got something safe to stand on, she's fine.

0:21:40 > 0:21:42There you go, look. There you are.

0:21:42 > 0:21:45- It's not as bad as you'd think. - APPLAUSE

0:21:45 > 0:21:47That's chilled out.

0:21:47 > 0:21:50If you take her and pop her on the paper next to the 5p.

0:21:50 > 0:21:53- So, how am I doing? - Yeah, just pop her down.

0:21:53 > 0:21:57Just move your hand out and we just make sure that she sits still.

0:21:57 > 0:22:02So, we can see a good, healthy growth, Kim, but what about weight?

0:22:02 > 0:22:05- I see a weighing machine. - We've got a little scales.

0:22:05 > 0:22:08This is the first time I've weighed these baby spiders,

0:22:08 > 0:22:10so I've got no idea how much they weigh.

0:22:10 > 0:22:14So, literally, if we pick them up and pop them down on to here,

0:22:14 > 0:22:18you can see, literally, almost nothing!

0:22:18 > 0:22:20She's 10 grams.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22That's quite surprising, actually.

0:22:22 > 0:22:25When you look at tarantulas they look really heavy and huge,

0:22:25 > 0:22:28but when they're on you, they're light, aren't they?

0:22:28 > 0:22:31They are extremely light. There's almost nothing to them.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34A nice easy morning, we've just got about three more to weigh?

0:22:34 > 0:22:38- No, out there we've got 19. - We've got 19 spiderlings.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40We could be here a long time.

0:22:40 > 0:22:43Shall we start with that big one first, then?

0:22:50 > 0:22:52'Back in the Giraffe House,

0:22:52 > 0:22:55'Imogen has just had some vital work done on her hooves

0:22:55 > 0:22:57'to save her from going lame.

0:22:59 > 0:23:04'And now everyone is waiting for her to wake up from the anaesthetic.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07'This is the worst part of the whole operation

0:23:07 > 0:23:11'because giraffes can have a bad reaction to the anaesthetic drug.

0:23:11 > 0:23:13'It can affect their heart, lungs and muscles.

0:23:17 > 0:23:19'But now she seems to be coming round.'

0:23:19 > 0:23:21Yeah, she's moving her legs.

0:23:21 > 0:23:25'It's been two hours since she was first put under anaesthetic,

0:23:25 > 0:23:29'so Imogen must get to her feet as soon as possible.'

0:23:33 > 0:23:36Easy. Good girl. Easy.

0:23:36 > 0:23:39'She's trying to get up, but her legs are week.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42'She may already have suffered muscle damage.

0:23:42 > 0:23:46'If she doesn't get up, it's going to get worse and worse.'

0:23:51 > 0:23:53Right, everybody out.

0:23:56 > 0:23:59'Andy asks everyone who is just watching to leave,

0:23:59 > 0:24:01'in case the crowd is causing her stress.

0:24:04 > 0:24:08'So now we must wait outside while the vets and her closest keepers

0:24:08 > 0:24:13'try everything they can to get Imogen back on her feet.

0:24:13 > 0:24:19'They even bring in special hoisting equipment to try to get her up.

0:24:19 > 0:24:23'The work goes on as minutes and hours kick by, but nothing helps.

0:24:26 > 0:24:30'And, then, Andy comes out with the news everyone was dreading.'

0:24:33 > 0:24:36Unfortunately, our worst fears have happened.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40The anaesthesia went pretty well.

0:24:40 > 0:24:43The actual operation itself went well,

0:24:43 > 0:24:48but, as can happen with giraffe, Imogen couldn't get up to her feet

0:24:48 > 0:24:54and we decided to put her to sleep and avoid any more suffering.

0:24:54 > 0:24:58'The keepers and vets did everything they could to save Imogen,

0:24:58 > 0:25:01'and her death has come as a terrible blow.'

0:25:02 > 0:25:07None of the animals here are any more or less important than anybody else,

0:25:07 > 0:25:11but when you get your old favourite like Imogen go, it hurts a lot.

0:25:14 > 0:25:19She was special. She was a pretty amazing giraffe and she's gone.

0:25:19 > 0:25:21'Imogen was a big character

0:25:21 > 0:25:25'and she made a big contribution to the life of the herd.

0:25:25 > 0:25:27'She may be gone, but the herd goes on.

0:25:29 > 0:25:33We're in a wonderful position with this giraffe herd.

0:25:33 > 0:25:35We've got a lot of young up and coming females.

0:25:35 > 0:25:37We're having a lot of calves born.

0:25:37 > 0:25:39It's the best group of Rothschild giraffe.

0:25:39 > 0:25:44You look a little Leila running around. It's what we do.

0:25:44 > 0:25:49You've got to look forward and we've got lots of babies to come

0:25:49 > 0:25:50and it's all good.

0:26:07 > 0:26:10MUSIC: "Wherever You Will Go" by Charlene Soraia

0:26:27 > 0:26:29'It's been a sad day for everyone who knew Imogen,

0:26:29 > 0:26:33'but the life of the park carries on.

0:26:33 > 0:26:35'The lion cubs are still practising their pounce,

0:26:35 > 0:26:38'the monkeys keep getting up to mischief,

0:26:38 > 0:26:41'and we're going to carry on bringing you the animal action,

0:26:41 > 0:26:44'fun and drama from the park.

0:26:44 > 0:26:48'Right now, though, we're out of time,

0:26:48 > 0:26:50'so, here's what we'll have next time on Roar.

0:26:52 > 0:26:57'Cessna the marmoset was bullied and kicked out of the group,

0:26:57 > 0:27:01'but now that Carlos is here, has true love come her way?

0:27:03 > 0:27:04We're ready!

0:27:04 > 0:27:09'The Rangers discover the downside of being a lorikeet keeper.'

0:27:09 > 0:27:13One has pooed on my shoulder!

0:27:13 > 0:27:16'And we'll be challenging the tigers to a tug-of-war

0:27:16 > 0:27:19'to find out how strong and scary they really are.'

0:27:20 > 0:27:23That was unbelievable!
