0:00:03 > 0:00:05On Roar today, there's trouble up in Wolf Wood.
0:00:05 > 0:00:08Frida the she-wolf is dangerously ill.
0:00:08 > 0:00:12The keepers and vet will do everything they can to help her,
0:00:12 > 0:00:14but will it be enough?
0:00:42 > 0:00:46- Hello, and welcome to ROAR. I'm Rani.- And I'm Johny.- And I'm Johny.
0:00:46 > 0:00:50- No, Rani, I'm Johny.- No Rani, I'm Johny.- Rani, what you doing?
0:00:50 > 0:00:52- What you doing?- That's... Oh, I get it!
0:00:52 > 0:00:55You're being a parrot and you're copying everything I'm saying
0:00:55 > 0:00:56and being really annoying!
0:00:56 > 0:00:58Being a parrot, being really annoying!
0:00:58 > 0:01:00Being a parrot, being really annoying!
0:01:00 > 0:01:02Let's just get on with today's show!
0:01:02 > 0:01:04Being really annoying! Get on with today's show!
0:01:04 > 0:01:05Being really annoying!
0:01:06 > 0:01:09It's a bird show today.
0:01:09 > 0:01:12Whippet, the tiny Boobook owl is learning how to fly,
0:01:12 > 0:01:16and I'll be there for his very first attempt.
0:01:16 > 0:01:19Oh, my goodness!
0:01:19 > 0:01:22Oh, please don't fall, please don't fall!
0:01:22 > 0:01:25And I'll be meeting a bird that can do an obstacle course
0:01:25 > 0:01:27quicker than a soldier.
0:01:29 > 0:01:32And Roar Ranger Ethan is a keen magician,
0:01:32 > 0:01:34so the sea lions show him a trick or two.
0:01:34 > 0:01:37How to make a fish disappear!
0:01:45 > 0:01:47But first, we're going up to Wolf Wood.
0:01:49 > 0:01:51There are 12 Canadian Timberwolves here,
0:01:51 > 0:01:55led by top dog Two Tips, and she-wolf Frida.
0:01:57 > 0:02:01Together, they are the alpha male and alpha female,
0:02:01 > 0:02:03and are in charge of the pack.
0:02:03 > 0:02:06This means they have their pick of the food, have the best sleeping
0:02:06 > 0:02:10spots, and most importantly, they are the only ones
0:02:10 > 0:02:12who breed and produce young.
0:02:13 > 0:02:17The alpha male and female are born into the position, but they must be
0:02:17 > 0:02:21physically and mentally fit enough to remain leaders of the pack.
0:02:23 > 0:02:27Frida is ten now, and has been the alpha female for six years.
0:02:27 > 0:02:30During that time, she's had eight pups.
0:02:34 > 0:02:38Deputy head of section Bob Trollope has looked after her since
0:02:38 > 0:02:41she herself was a pup, and she's definitely one of his favourites.
0:02:43 > 0:02:47But recently, Bob has noticed that Frida is not her old self.
0:02:47 > 0:02:50Something is wrong, and he's worried.
0:02:52 > 0:02:56Frida, in the past week or two, has been doing some strange behaviour,
0:02:56 > 0:03:00circling in one direction, not walking properly,
0:03:00 > 0:03:03finding it difficult to eat, drink,
0:03:03 > 0:03:07and we're obviously concerned about her.
0:03:10 > 0:03:13Bob has brought Frida into the wolf house,
0:03:13 > 0:03:17and called in Safari Park vet Duncan to have a look at her.
0:03:17 > 0:03:18Has she got a head tilt?
0:03:20 > 0:03:22More of a turn one way, rather than tilted.
0:03:22 > 0:03:25She tends to sway off to the left.
0:03:26 > 0:03:30Frida is a hugely important member of the wolfpack, but she needs
0:03:30 > 0:03:34to be at full strength if she's to continue as the alpha female.
0:03:36 > 0:03:38Does she get bullied at all?
0:03:38 > 0:03:40Yeah, I think they've been picking on her slightly,
0:03:40 > 0:03:43but then she's also been picking on some of the other ones.
0:03:45 > 0:03:48She always turns to the left, yeah, she can't go to her right.
0:03:52 > 0:03:55All the signs are, really, she's got some brain problem.
0:03:56 > 0:03:58If she's got a brain problem, really,
0:03:58 > 0:04:01there's not a lot you can do for that, I'm afraid, Bob.
0:04:04 > 0:04:06It looked really difficult, drinking.
0:04:06 > 0:04:08She was trying to drink with her head on one side,
0:04:08 > 0:04:10and she was just dribbling it all back out again.
0:04:10 > 0:04:13If Duncan is right, and Frida's illness is being caused by a
0:04:13 > 0:04:19brain problem, then the team will be faced with a difficult decision.
0:04:19 > 0:04:21If it progresses and gets worse and worse, it's just a sign that
0:04:21 > 0:04:25whatever's causing the problem's getting bigger, and in that
0:04:25 > 0:04:28situation, the kindest thing for her would be to put her to sleep.
0:04:30 > 0:04:34So do you think we're at that stage now, or do we let it...
0:04:34 > 0:04:38I don't know, really. What do you think? How is she coping?
0:04:38 > 0:04:42She seems to be getting wobblier, but...
0:04:43 > 0:04:46I don't know. Well, how quick would it deteriorate?
0:04:46 > 0:04:49Well, she's changed quite a lot in the last week, hasn't she?
0:04:49 > 0:04:50Yeah, I think so.
0:04:53 > 0:04:58These are the hardest decisions that vets and keepers ever have to make.
0:04:58 > 0:05:00If they can make an animal better, they will,
0:05:00 > 0:05:04but they love their animals and don't want them to suffer.
0:05:04 > 0:05:08They're faced with some tough choices, and need time to
0:05:08 > 0:05:11think about them, so we'll come back to Wolf Wood later on.
0:05:21 > 0:05:24Now, earlier in the series I was introduced to
0:05:24 > 0:05:28one of the cutest animals in the park, Whippet here, the baby owl.
0:05:28 > 0:05:30Now today, I believe, it's a special day for Whippet,
0:05:30 > 0:05:32- is that right, Jimmy? - It certainly is, yeah.
0:05:32 > 0:05:34We're going to try and get him
0:05:34 > 0:05:37to fly to you for the very first time in his whole career.
0:05:37 > 0:05:40Now hang on, seriously. Has he ever flown before?
0:05:40 > 0:05:41Because how old is he now?
0:05:41 > 0:05:43He is now, he must be about 12 or 13 weeks old,
0:05:43 > 0:05:47so the initial flights are only little baby bumps around his aviary,
0:05:47 > 0:05:49you know, so he'll bounce from perch to perch,
0:05:49 > 0:05:53so we want to ask him to do bigger flights now, and train him
0:05:53 > 0:05:56to come to us for food, so we can use him in the displays.
0:05:56 > 0:05:58I love that you say we're going to ask him.
0:05:58 > 0:05:59OK, Whippet, we're going to ask you!
0:05:59 > 0:06:01No, obviously, how are we going to do this?
0:06:01 > 0:06:04He's due his breakfast, OK, so that means he'll jump to us
0:06:04 > 0:06:07for little bits of food, OK, so I'm going to give you a little glove.
0:06:07 > 0:06:09We'll just teach him where he needs to sit,
0:06:09 > 0:06:11and then we're going to ask him
0:06:11 > 0:06:13to come to you for a few little bits of food.
0:06:13 > 0:06:15I never think of birds taking their first flight.
0:06:15 > 0:06:17You just presume they can do it.
0:06:17 > 0:06:19Yeah, in the wild they have to branch out from trees,
0:06:19 > 0:06:22and eventually learn to hunt on their own, so it is maiden flights.
0:06:22 > 0:06:24He'd be doing it in the wild roughly about this time,
0:06:24 > 0:06:27- so we're going to teach him to do it today as well.- OK.
0:06:27 > 0:06:30What I'm going to get you to do, Rani, is almost have him so the back
0:06:30 > 0:06:32of your fist is facing him, then it's a nice, clear perch for him.
0:06:32 > 0:06:34That's it, and then if you turn round
0:06:34 > 0:06:36and stretch your arm out this way.
0:06:36 > 0:06:39- How close?- If you look at him at the moment...- His wings are open!
0:06:39 > 0:06:41He's opening his wings because he's having a shower.
0:06:41 > 0:06:43Because it's raining, he's having a bit of a bath and shower,
0:06:43 > 0:06:46which is really cool, because he's never done that before.
0:06:46 > 0:06:49- He's having a bit of a wash. - Look at the wings underneath!
0:06:49 > 0:06:51The colours underneath are amazing, aren't they?
0:06:51 > 0:06:53Yeah, he's quite colourful,
0:06:53 > 0:06:55and underneath his wings you can see his feathers are still growing.
0:06:55 > 0:06:58- Yeah.- So they almost grow in like a little tube.
0:06:58 > 0:06:59I've got to say that he has changed,
0:06:59 > 0:07:02because he was a bit more fluffy the last time I saw him, a bit lighter.
0:07:02 > 0:07:04Yeah, yeah, definitely. So he'll go a bit darker,
0:07:04 > 0:07:06the little feathers around his head will eventually go.
0:07:06 > 0:07:08Oh, my goodness. Look at him!
0:07:08 > 0:07:11Let's see if we can get him to do a little jump, now.
0:07:11 > 0:07:13You stick your thumb down, like this, and then...
0:07:13 > 0:07:15Here you go, Whippet.
0:07:17 > 0:07:18You did it!
0:07:23 > 0:07:26Well done! I feel really proud of him!
0:07:26 > 0:07:31- I feel very proud as well, yeah!- Do you feel proud as well?- I do, I do!
0:07:31 > 0:07:34Whippet, the hand-reared Boobook owl has done brilliantly for his
0:07:34 > 0:07:38first flight, but Jimmy reckons he can do an even bigger one.
0:07:38 > 0:07:41Will he manage it? Find out later.
0:07:49 > 0:07:52Our Roar Ranger for today is 10-year-old Ethan.
0:07:54 > 0:08:00This budding magician is mad about animals, even the less exotic ones.
0:08:00 > 0:08:03My favourite animal is a goat.
0:08:03 > 0:08:05GOAT BLEATS
0:08:05 > 0:08:09But what animal will he be working with today?
0:08:09 > 0:08:14As usual, we're giving Ethan just two clues to help him guess his job.
0:08:15 > 0:08:17Clue number one, a boat.
0:08:17 > 0:08:20Clue number two, a loudspeaker.
0:08:23 > 0:08:26River cruiser. I know it's a river cruiser.
0:08:26 > 0:08:30This is one of those intercoms. You speak into it.
0:08:30 > 0:08:33Kkkkrr! This is the captain. Kkkkrrr!
0:08:33 > 0:08:36So, I feel like we're going on a river cruiser,
0:08:36 > 0:08:40and I'll be the person speaking on the intercom.
0:08:41 > 0:08:43He's confident, but is he right?
0:08:43 > 0:08:46He is!
0:08:46 > 0:08:48Right!
0:08:48 > 0:08:49Yes! Sea lions!
0:08:51 > 0:08:52In the wild,
0:08:52 > 0:08:56California sea lions are found all along the West Coast of America.
0:08:56 > 0:09:01These incredible hunters can dive to depths of 274 metres
0:09:01 > 0:09:02in search of their prey.
0:09:02 > 0:09:06That's more than 2 and a half football pitches straight down!
0:09:06 > 0:09:09Not only will Ethan be helping with the sea lions, but we are also
0:09:09 > 0:09:13giving him one of the hardest Ranger challenges we've ever set.
0:09:13 > 0:09:16Being a presenter on the Jungle Cruise.
0:09:17 > 0:09:21If he is to pass this challenge, he'll need some help, so we're
0:09:21 > 0:09:25sending him off to see deputy head of the lake section, Sarah.
0:09:25 > 0:09:28- Hello, my name's Ethan. - Hi, Ethan, I'm Sarah.
0:09:28 > 0:09:30I'm one of the keepers down here at the lakes,
0:09:30 > 0:09:32and I hear you've got a bit of a mission today.
0:09:32 > 0:09:36- Yes.- You need to learn some things about the sea lions.- Yep.
0:09:36 > 0:09:39Well, you've come to the right place.
0:09:39 > 0:09:42She's got four of the sea lions in for a feed this morning.
0:09:46 > 0:09:48..and noisy old Buster.
0:09:48 > 0:09:50FOGHORN
0:09:51 > 0:09:55Demonstration over, it's time for Ethan to get stuck in.
0:09:55 > 0:09:56You're very lucky today,
0:09:56 > 0:09:59because as you've got that bucket of fish in your hand, I'm going
0:09:59 > 0:10:02to ask you if you could possibly feed one of the sea lions for me.
0:10:02 > 0:10:05But throwing a slimy fish whilst wearing a glove is not
0:10:05 > 0:10:07the easiest thing to do.
0:10:10 > 0:10:12Whoops!
0:10:14 > 0:10:15Don't worry, Buster'll get it!
0:10:16 > 0:10:20Slippery start over, he's right on target.
0:10:23 > 0:10:25To keep things simple for his presentation,
0:10:25 > 0:10:31Ethan is going to focus on just two of the sea lions, Buster and Nancy.
0:10:31 > 0:10:32How can you tell which one is which?
0:10:32 > 0:10:35Buster will be the easiest one to tell from the boat,
0:10:35 > 0:10:37because he's the biggest sea lion we've got,
0:10:37 > 0:10:40so just the biggest, loudest sea lion, that's Buster.
0:10:40 > 0:10:43If you see on the top of his head, as well, he's got that little lump.
0:10:43 > 0:10:46Only the boy sea lions, when they get older, get that little lump.
0:10:46 > 0:10:47It's called a crest.
0:10:47 > 0:10:51Big and loud. Well, that seems easy enough, but what about Nancy?
0:10:51 > 0:10:55This one's Nancy, here. She's one of our oldest sea lions.
0:10:55 > 0:10:58As you can see, she's got really short whiskers there,
0:10:58 > 0:11:02- compared to the other ones. - What are their whiskers used for?
0:11:02 > 0:11:05Well, erm, for starters,
0:11:05 > 0:11:09a really cool fact is the official name for them is vibrissae,
0:11:09 > 0:11:13for their whiskers, but what they are is they're really sensitive,
0:11:13 > 0:11:15and they actually use them to detect the fish.
0:11:15 > 0:11:18That's really cool, I'm definitely going to use that.
0:11:20 > 0:11:23- They are so cute. - They are very good.
0:11:23 > 0:11:26I think, can I have another fact?
0:11:26 > 0:11:28Do you know how much the sea lions weigh?
0:11:28 > 0:11:32Er, Buster there, approximately, I would say weighs somewhere
0:11:32 > 0:11:37between 250 to 300 kilograms in weight, quite a heavy boy.
0:11:37 > 0:11:42At 300 kilograms, Buster is six times heavier than Ethan.
0:11:43 > 0:11:46Ethan's head must be swimming with information.
0:11:46 > 0:11:47Question is, will he remember it
0:11:47 > 0:11:51when he's faced with a boat full of visitors?
0:11:51 > 0:11:53Join us later in the show to find out.
0:11:59 > 0:12:01A little earlier, I was with falconer Jimmy,
0:12:01 > 0:12:06where we saw Whippet the Boobook owl do his very first little flight.
0:12:06 > 0:12:09Now Jimmy reckons he's ready for more.
0:12:09 > 0:12:11So, what are we going to do now?
0:12:11 > 0:12:15He's done his first jump, and there was a bit of arm, wing movement.
0:12:15 > 0:12:17Yeah. We're going to ask him to do a little bit more,
0:12:17 > 0:12:20and so what we do is we do very, very short jumps first of all,
0:12:20 > 0:12:23and then we try and increase the distance, OK, to make him
0:12:23 > 0:12:26do a little bit more work, but at the moment he's snuggling into Paul.
0:12:26 > 0:12:29So, we'll go a little bit further away, so we've got about...
0:12:29 > 0:12:31- Is that too much? - No, that's good, that's good.
0:12:31 > 0:12:33So, we'll get you to hold your arm out again, Rani, and then...
0:12:33 > 0:12:35Oh, my goodness!
0:12:35 > 0:12:37JIMMY WHISTLES
0:12:37 > 0:12:40Please don't fall, please don't fall!
0:12:40 > 0:12:41Did you see that?
0:12:47 > 0:12:50That was proper, like, three or four foot as well, wasn't it?
0:12:50 > 0:12:52- Yeah, definitely. Right, shall we try the big one?- Oh, no.
0:12:52 > 0:12:56- Is he ready?- Yeah, I think so. - I don't want to push him too far.
0:12:56 > 0:12:58- No, he's all right, he's all right. - Yeah? I don't want him to get...
0:12:58 > 0:13:03- I'm so nervous for him!- Made him do it for the first time ever.
0:13:03 > 0:13:05OK, so we're going to go for a final one, OK,
0:13:05 > 0:13:07and we're going to make it a fairly big one.
0:13:07 > 0:13:09We don't want to push him too far,
0:13:09 > 0:13:11so we always want to end on a positive note.
0:13:11 > 0:13:14OK, so we'll go a little bit further back.
0:13:14 > 0:13:17So, is it tiring for Whippet? Because he's only little.
0:13:17 > 0:13:18Yeah, I suppose it is, really.
0:13:18 > 0:13:21It's his first baby flights, really, so he's
0:13:21 > 0:13:23building muscle, and eventually, over the next few weeks, he'll
0:13:23 > 0:13:26get fitter and fitter, and then we can increase bigger distances.
0:13:26 > 0:13:28OK, so we'll get you to hold your hand out.
0:13:28 > 0:13:31If he looks like he's not going to make it, should I run closer to him?
0:13:31 > 0:13:32We might be able to help him.
0:13:32 > 0:13:35I don't want him to fall, please don't let him fall!
0:13:35 > 0:13:36He shouldn't do. Whippet!
0:13:36 > 0:13:38JIMMY WHISTLES
0:13:38 > 0:13:39Whippet!
0:13:39 > 0:13:42JIMMY WHISTLES
0:13:42 > 0:13:46Ah, you see. He's really thinking about it, isn't he?
0:13:46 > 0:13:51- His head's going, his head's going.- Come on. Here we go.
0:13:51 > 0:13:53He's thinking about it.
0:13:53 > 0:13:54Yes! Well done!
0:14:03 > 0:14:06You clever, clever boy!
0:14:06 > 0:14:10Look at those big eyes, he's saying, "I am so proud of me".
0:14:10 > 0:14:14Well, Jimmy, thank you. Genuinely, thank you so much.
0:14:14 > 0:14:16I can't believe, Whippet, I was here,
0:14:16 > 0:14:19- we were here for your first flight. - First-ever flight.
0:14:19 > 0:14:20And, you never know, one day,
0:14:20 > 0:14:22you could be flying above all the crowds here.
0:14:22 > 0:14:24Yeah, he'll be wowing audiences in a few weeks' time,
0:14:24 > 0:14:26so it won't take long now.
0:14:26 > 0:14:29Now we've got these initial flights, we're kind of cooking on gas, now.
0:14:29 > 0:14:31- High five!- High five!
0:14:31 > 0:14:34- Excellent, good stuff. - And for you as well. Well done!
0:14:40 > 0:14:43What's a shark's favourite game?
0:14:43 > 0:14:44Swallow the leader!
0:14:44 > 0:14:46Meow!
0:14:46 > 0:14:51- What do frogs like to drink?- I don't know. What do frogs like to drink?
0:14:51 > 0:14:53Croaka-Cola!
0:14:53 > 0:14:56Oh, oh, oh, aaaah! Aaaah! Aaaah!
0:14:56 > 0:15:00How does a fish get to school?
0:15:00 > 0:15:01By octobus!
0:15:10 > 0:15:15Back up in Wolf Wood, Safari Park vet Duncan and the keepers
0:15:15 > 0:15:18have been discussing what to do about Frida the poorly wolf.
0:15:18 > 0:15:22Her health has been getting worse very quickly recently.
0:15:22 > 0:15:24They're not sure what is causing it.
0:15:24 > 0:15:28It may be a brain problem, or even heart disease.
0:15:28 > 0:15:31I don't exactly know what's wrong with Frida,
0:15:31 > 0:15:33but she's got some problem in her head which is causing all
0:15:33 > 0:15:37these neurological problems, and it's obviously progressing quite
0:15:37 > 0:15:40quickly, because she's got quite a lot worse in the last week,
0:15:40 > 0:15:44and if we don't do anything she's just going to get a lot worse,
0:15:46 > 0:15:51and the risk is, because of the pack animal nature of wolves,
0:15:51 > 0:15:55the other wolves will probably start picking on her,
0:15:55 > 0:15:59so I think, on balance, the best thing for her, really,
0:15:59 > 0:16:02is to put her to sleep, before any of these nasty things happen.
0:16:02 > 0:16:05Of course, animals can't talk,
0:16:05 > 0:16:10so when they are very ill sometimes the kindest thing is to
0:16:10 > 0:16:14put them to sleep, so they don't suffer lots of pain.
0:16:14 > 0:16:17When you have an animal, you care for it,
0:16:17 > 0:16:21and unfortunately sometimes you have to make that question of
0:16:21 > 0:16:25is it worth letting her go on, and we've decided that it's not, so
0:16:25 > 0:16:30it's a bit of a sad day, but we will have to put her down, I'm afraid.
0:16:32 > 0:16:35Bob has known Frida since she was a wolf pup,
0:16:35 > 0:16:37so he feels her death more than most.
0:16:37 > 0:16:41But he's also a very experienced animal keeper,
0:16:41 > 0:16:45and knows sometimes this is the kindest thing to do.
0:16:45 > 0:16:48Frida will be missed, but she won't be forgotten.
0:16:50 > 0:16:55Frida was a very important part of the pack, being an alpha female.
0:16:55 > 0:16:58It's always a loss losing any of our animals,
0:16:58 > 0:17:02but a major role as an alpha is obviously a big loss for the pack.
0:17:04 > 0:17:07She's been a breeding female for a number of years,
0:17:07 > 0:17:10which is an important role, obviously.
0:17:13 > 0:17:15She was a character, we loved her.
0:17:15 > 0:17:19I think she had a really good life here.
0:17:19 > 0:17:22And we'll catch up with Bob later on,
0:17:22 > 0:17:27to see what happens to the wolfpack with Frida gone.
0:17:39 > 0:17:42Now, earlier in the show, Rani had an incredible experience
0:17:42 > 0:17:46when little Whippet, the Boobook owl, did his first ever flight.
0:17:46 > 0:17:49Well, now I'm heading down to see Jimmy the falconer
0:17:49 > 0:17:50for another first.
0:17:50 > 0:17:53A bird I've never even heard of.
0:17:54 > 0:17:57Jimmy, what is a caracara, first and foremost?
0:17:57 > 0:17:59It's a really unusual bird.
0:17:59 > 0:18:02It's really closely related to falcons, so a really, really
0:18:02 > 0:18:05fast species of bird of prey, but it doesn't really look or act like one.
0:18:05 > 0:18:07There's about 12 different types of caracara
0:18:07 > 0:18:08in the whole world.
0:18:08 > 0:18:10Which caracara are we going to be working with today?
0:18:10 > 0:18:12He's a striated caracara, OK, and the striations are just
0:18:12 > 0:18:15basically the little gold flecks around his neck, and they live
0:18:15 > 0:18:18on the Falkland Islands, so they're only on a few scattered
0:18:18 > 0:18:21islands around the south tip of America, and he's called Sirius.
0:18:21 > 0:18:23OK, and I guess, today, we're going to be seeing how
0:18:23 > 0:18:25intelligent they are, so what are we going to do?
0:18:25 > 0:18:28What we've basically done is we've hidden food around the
0:18:28 > 0:18:30rocks, because in the wild they'll feed on bugs and beetles and
0:18:30 > 0:18:33insects, crabs and crustaceans, you know, you name it, they'll eat it.
0:18:33 > 0:18:34Really?
0:18:34 > 0:18:37Then, hopefully, from the rocks, he'll work his way down to
0:18:37 > 0:18:40the plant pots, so we've hidden a few little bits of food underneath
0:18:40 > 0:18:42those as well, so he's got to actually flip over the plant
0:18:42 > 0:18:43pot to get the bit of food.
0:18:43 > 0:18:45Wow! We've got a bin here, what's all this about?
0:18:45 > 0:18:48On the Falkland Islands, you will find dustbins.
0:18:48 > 0:18:50There's people there who stick a dustbin out the back garden,
0:18:50 > 0:18:53and caracaras have learnt that there's food inside these.
0:18:53 > 0:18:54All they've got to do is raid them.
0:18:54 > 0:18:57- And now we've got the socks.- So, they're attracted to the colour red.
0:18:57 > 0:19:00Not many birds of prey can see in full colour,
0:19:00 > 0:19:03so the different colours of socks should hopefully prove every
0:19:03 > 0:19:05single time, when he picks the red one,
0:19:05 > 0:19:07and we can change them round, so you can swap them round.
0:19:07 > 0:19:08Why would it pick the right one?
0:19:08 > 0:19:10Is it because it looks a little bit like meat,
0:19:10 > 0:19:11or a juicy berry or something?
0:19:11 > 0:19:14Yeah, it'll be meat, so it's the colour of meat.
0:19:14 > 0:19:17So, here we got an animal that's not only an amazing hunter,
0:19:17 > 0:19:21super intelligent, but can see in colour, unlike other birds,
0:19:21 > 0:19:24and is just the main, uber-predator of its kingdom?
0:19:24 > 0:19:27I can't wait to meet this bird, so can we bring it out?
0:19:27 > 0:19:29- We can, we certainly can.- Excellent.
0:19:29 > 0:19:32Well, join us later on in the show to meet the amazing caracara.
0:19:32 > 0:19:35I know I'm looking forward to it.
0:19:39 > 0:19:44OK, here's the cheat code you've been waiting for.
0:19:46 > 0:19:47Type that in and see what it gives you.
0:19:47 > 0:19:49New treats, animals or enclosures.
0:19:49 > 0:19:54You'll find the brilliant Roar game on the CBBC website. Happy gaming!
0:20:06 > 0:20:09We're back on Half-mile Lake, where Ethan is about to undergo
0:20:09 > 0:20:13one of the hardest tasks we've ever set a Roar Ranger.
0:20:13 > 0:20:15To present to a boat of paying guests!
0:20:16 > 0:20:20He's looking nervous. Before his big challenge,
0:20:20 > 0:20:24there's just time for some top tips from the professional, keeper John.
0:20:24 > 0:20:26Now, when you're talking to the public,
0:20:26 > 0:20:28you've just got to make sure you try and give them eye contact,
0:20:28 > 0:20:31make sure you try and keep eye contact with them.
0:20:31 > 0:20:33Try and speak as clearly as possible.
0:20:33 > 0:20:35Don't speak too fast, because a lot of people,
0:20:35 > 0:20:37- when they start off, they speak too fast.- And no one hears.
0:20:37 > 0:20:41Yeah, and no one hears, it just sounds like one great big blur.
0:20:41 > 0:20:44It's almost time for Ethan's big moment,
0:20:44 > 0:20:48And the sea lions have turned up in force.
0:20:48 > 0:20:52How on earth is he going to tell one from another?
0:20:52 > 0:20:54There's Buster, but will he recognise him?
0:20:55 > 0:20:57All right, Ethan, I think you're up.
0:20:57 > 0:20:59We're ready for you, so I'll just introduce you,
0:20:59 > 0:21:02and then I'll have the microphone over to you, all right?
0:21:02 > 0:21:04Come on, Ethan, you can do it!
0:21:06 > 0:21:08Ethan is going to tell you all about the sea lions,
0:21:08 > 0:21:10so I'll pass you over to Ethan now.
0:21:11 > 0:21:13All eyes are on him.
0:21:15 > 0:21:18He must stay focused if he is to succeed.
0:21:20 > 0:21:21Hi, I'm Ethan,
0:21:21 > 0:21:24and I'm here to tell you a couple of facts about the sea lions.
0:21:26 > 0:21:30If you look carefully over there, you should see Buster.
0:21:30 > 0:21:32He weighs around about 200 kilograms onwards.
0:21:32 > 0:21:35Yes! He's off to a flying start.
0:21:35 > 0:21:39You can tell sea lions, male from girl,
0:21:39 > 0:21:44because the males have lumps on top of the head, whereas the girls don't.
0:21:44 > 0:21:46Great fact, Ethan!
0:21:46 > 0:21:52Buster's been joined by Nancy, but will Ethan be able to recognise her?
0:21:52 > 0:21:53And there's Nancy.
0:21:53 > 0:21:57You can tell Nancy because of her very short whiskers,
0:21:57 > 0:21:59if you look carefully.
0:21:59 > 0:22:01The technical name for whiskers is vibrissae.
0:22:01 > 0:22:05Yes! Another killer fact!
0:22:07 > 0:22:09Thank you very much.
0:22:09 > 0:22:11APPLAUSE
0:22:12 > 0:22:16With the tour over, has John been happy with Ethan's performance?
0:22:16 > 0:22:18He actually did really well for his first trip.
0:22:18 > 0:22:21I'm quite pleased with how it went. It could have gone worse.
0:22:21 > 0:22:24The fact that he's gone off to learn his own facts is fantastic,
0:22:24 > 0:22:25it's what we like to see.
0:22:25 > 0:22:29Because I was standing there, and literally, pffffff!
0:22:29 > 0:22:31Like a bullet, it just comes out of nowhere.
0:22:31 > 0:22:34Apart from the giraffe, that's the biggest animal I've ever seen.
0:22:34 > 0:22:35Go, Buster!
0:22:35 > 0:22:37BUSTER BARKS
0:22:44 > 0:22:47Earlier on in the show, head falconer Jimmy told us
0:22:47 > 0:22:49about one of his favourite birds, the caracara.
0:22:49 > 0:22:51He thinks this bird is incredible.
0:22:51 > 0:22:55So incredible, he's set up its own assault course to prove how
0:22:55 > 0:22:57intelligent this bird is.
0:22:57 > 0:23:00It's Sirius the caracara, and we're ready to meet him.
0:23:00 > 0:23:03- Jimmy, are you ready?- I'm ready, I'm ready.- Let the bird out, then!
0:23:03 > 0:23:04OK, Sirius.
0:23:04 > 0:23:07Looking forward to this. Here he is. This is Sirius the caracara.
0:23:07 > 0:23:10Hello, Sirius!
0:23:10 > 0:23:13Oh, he's gone straight over to the rocks, that's incredible!
0:23:13 > 0:23:16So he's got the meat here, he's going over, he needs to go over
0:23:16 > 0:23:19to these rocks and try and knock them out of the way, look at this!
0:23:19 > 0:23:22So, he uses his feet to flip over the plant pot.
0:23:22 > 0:23:24Most birds of prey will use either their feet or their beak.
0:23:24 > 0:23:27He uses both, which makes him a bit of a special bird of prey.
0:23:27 > 0:23:28That's incredible!
0:23:28 > 0:23:30So his feet have got a little bit of dexterity, then, in a way?
0:23:30 > 0:23:32Yeah, yeah, definitely. Yeah, he certainly has.
0:23:32 > 0:23:35We'll see if we can get him back down to this rock over here.
0:23:35 > 0:23:37So, we want him to put his head under these...
0:23:37 > 0:23:39He's actually got to stick his head in and almost shift the rock
0:23:39 > 0:23:42up to find a little bit of food from underneath.
0:23:44 > 0:23:46There are all sorts of bugs and beetles and insects,
0:23:46 > 0:23:48and then this one, he's got to pull the rope to move the rock.
0:23:48 > 0:23:51Look at that! That was incredible to see him, he did pull the rope,
0:23:51 > 0:23:52though, didn't he?
0:23:52 > 0:23:55Yeah, yeah, he will do, yeah. So, we've got the burrow, next of all.
0:23:55 > 0:23:57- OK.- And then we'll come back to the few others,
0:23:57 > 0:23:59he's going to have a quick look over there.
0:23:59 > 0:24:01So, if you hide food all over the arena,
0:24:01 > 0:24:04so he never knows where the food is going to be every single day.
0:24:04 > 0:24:07Now, we know these are intelligent birds and they would do
0:24:07 > 0:24:09things like this in the wild, but have you had to do any training
0:24:09 > 0:24:11with him to do this kind of stuff?
0:24:11 > 0:24:13Not really. What we'll do is we'll set him a task and let him
0:24:13 > 0:24:16work it out himself. It keeps him busy and keeps on stimulated,
0:24:16 > 0:24:18so hopefully we can get him to go through the burrow.
0:24:18 > 0:24:20Hello, mate!
0:24:20 > 0:24:25- So, we'll get him to jump on down. - So he's having a little...
0:24:25 > 0:24:27We do have a camera inside this tunnel,
0:24:27 > 0:24:30so hopefully we've got some amazing shots of Sirius going through
0:24:30 > 0:24:31that tunnel and picking up his meat.
0:24:31 > 0:24:33So he's done that, he's completed that task.
0:24:33 > 0:24:37- Yeah, he's perfect, so we go to the dustbin.- The dustbin, OK, excellent.
0:24:37 > 0:24:39- This should be good.- We'll set this dustbin out for him,
0:24:39 > 0:24:42we'll take the lid off it, and he should just...
0:24:42 > 0:24:44- Straight in!- Not a problem.
0:24:44 > 0:24:47I don't know if you caught him, but he looks at you,
0:24:47 > 0:24:49then at me, and was like, "Come on, then, what's next?"
0:24:49 > 0:24:53- So we've got the washing line next. - He's gone straight over from it!
0:24:53 > 0:24:55So, in order to get a reward from me,
0:24:55 > 0:25:00he knows he's got to steal the red item from the washing line.
0:25:00 > 0:25:01To actually pick it off the line?
0:25:01 > 0:25:04- Oh, there you go, he's pulled it off!- And he'll run away with it.
0:25:04 > 0:25:06I tell you what, Jimmy, it's been brilliant hanging out with
0:25:06 > 0:25:09Sirius, and this is the first time I've seen a caracara bird.
0:25:09 > 0:25:11- Yeah, they are pretty unusual. - And he really has impressed me.
0:25:11 > 0:25:14I tell you what, I think he's got a higher IQ than me!
0:25:25 > 0:25:27Now, it nearly is the end of the show,
0:25:27 > 0:25:29but before we leave you today we've come up to meet up with
0:25:29 > 0:25:31keeper Bob and find out how the wolves are doing.
0:25:31 > 0:25:35Now, Bob, there has been some sad news, hasn't there, because
0:25:35 > 0:25:39the alpha female of the pack, Frida, has recently passed away.
0:25:39 > 0:25:40Was she a bit of a character?
0:25:40 > 0:25:42She was very much a character, and obviously, in the pack,
0:25:42 > 0:25:45she was very important, and it was a great loss.
0:25:45 > 0:25:47So what kind of things are we talking about?
0:25:47 > 0:25:49Tell us some great things about Frida,
0:25:49 > 0:25:51because you knew her really well, didn't you?
0:25:51 > 0:25:55Yeah, well, she was one of these mischievous wolves.
0:25:55 > 0:25:57If there was going to be any trouble,
0:25:57 > 0:25:59she would get in there somewhere along the line!
0:25:59 > 0:26:02So, how are the rest of the pack reacting now,
0:26:02 > 0:26:05because she was the only breeding female, wasn't she?
0:26:05 > 0:26:08- So she was mummy to a lot.- She was mummy to most of them.- Really?
0:26:08 > 0:26:10How many pups did she have over a time?
0:26:10 > 0:26:12Well, she had several litters over a few years.
0:26:12 > 0:26:15Unfortunately, for the past couple of years she didn't breed,
0:26:15 > 0:26:19but maybe that was something to do with her problem.
0:26:19 > 0:26:21So although she's gone, Bob, her legacy lives on in the pack,
0:26:21 > 0:26:23through the little ones.
0:26:23 > 0:26:26- Very much so, yeah, very much so. - So what are the plans now, then?
0:26:26 > 0:26:30Well, as the saying goes, when one door closes, another one opens,
0:26:30 > 0:26:35and it opens it up to a whole new bloodline coming in, if we want to.
0:26:35 > 0:26:37All we've got to do is move the young female on,
0:26:37 > 0:26:39because obviously, being her daughter,
0:26:39 > 0:26:40we don't want to breed from her,
0:26:40 > 0:26:44because she is related to the other males, so we could get, possibly,
0:26:44 > 0:26:48a new female in, unless they swap the young one for a new one.
0:26:48 > 0:26:51- Wow!- That's awesome! Some pups may be on the way!- Maybe.
0:26:51 > 0:26:52Well, we look forward to that.
0:26:52 > 0:26:56It really is sad news about Frida, but great stuff to look forward to.
0:26:56 > 0:26:57- Thanks very much, Bob.- It is.
0:26:57 > 0:26:59That's all we've got time for on today's show, but here's
0:26:59 > 0:27:03a sneak peek of what's coming up on the next episode of Roar.
0:27:05 > 0:27:08They may be deadly, ferocious, and loud,
0:27:08 > 0:27:12but lions play like pussycats.
0:27:12 > 0:27:16So what will they make of our two big red balls?
0:27:16 > 0:27:20The cheetah is the fastest land animal on earth,
0:27:20 > 0:27:23but are they quick off the mark at feeding time?
0:27:25 > 0:27:29And the competition is fierce to find our new champion.
0:27:29 > 0:27:32Who will be crowned the park's laziest animal?
0:27:32 > 0:27:36You can see they're all working flat out to win it!
