0:00:30 > 0:00:34But can these eight kids make the grade and learn enough

0:00:34 > 0:00:37to lead a safari in search of the big five?

0:00:37 > 0:00:40This is the challenge for the Safari 8.

0:01:00 > 0:01:04Last time, the Safari 8 learned how to deal with a medical emergency.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07You've been bitten by a black mamba, Tomas. Don't move.

0:01:07 > 0:01:12And their big cat mission to study lions was a roaring success.

0:01:13 > 0:01:15I don't get scared very easily.

0:01:17 > 0:01:21Today, the team hit the road and the beach

0:01:21 > 0:01:23to take a break at the coast.

0:01:25 > 0:01:29Our rookie rangers are all at sea on a whale-watching mission.

0:01:29 > 0:01:33- There's the fin. - I think I'm going to be sick.

0:01:33 > 0:01:37And everyone has to face up to some hard truths in their midway reports.

0:01:37 > 0:01:41- I'll reprimand you a bit now. - I won't like this.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45It's early in Kruger National Park

0:01:45 > 0:01:49and everyone is already up and about, ready for ranger training,

0:01:49 > 0:01:54but mentors Rudi and Frankie have something different in mind.

0:01:54 > 0:01:58What we've got in store today, we're going down to the Natal coastline.

0:01:58 > 0:02:03KwaZulu-Natal is a region of South Africa bordered by the Indian Ocean

0:02:03 > 0:02:06and the Safari 8 are heading for Rocktail Bay.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09Guys, you've got five minutes to pack your bags,

0:02:09 > 0:02:13so we can pack the stuff in the vehicles and get off. Off you go!

0:02:15 > 0:02:19So it's straight to the business of packing

0:02:19 > 0:02:22everything a ranger could need down by the sea.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25Head torch, water bottle, back pack.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28Has everyone got a head torch?

0:02:28 > 0:02:31- What's fourth on the list? - Underwear and socks.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34- For how long?- Four days. - OK, thanks.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37But there's been a mix-up with the laundry.

0:02:37 > 0:02:41- Ella, I've got your trousers. - Whose are these?

0:02:41 > 0:02:44It isn't just the large, it's also their smalls.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46They're bigger than me. Tomas!

0:02:46 > 0:02:49No, don't empty your stuff out. That's mine.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52That's mine!

0:02:52 > 0:02:54I have one.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57All my washing is in all of these bags.

0:02:57 > 0:03:03I've got Tomas's really cool boxers and he's got my bras and my knickers.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06These are cool!

0:03:06 > 0:03:10I am just so happy to get out of this bug-infested place.

0:03:10 > 0:03:14They should be travelling light, but by packing with emergencies in mind,

0:03:14 > 0:03:18Noma has ended up with excess baggage.

0:03:18 > 0:03:22You never know when someone might spill juice on your jeans,

0:03:22 > 0:03:24so I've packed my things as a girl.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28They've told me "no" and now I have to go and put it back.

0:03:28 > 0:03:32Eventually, the team are ready to hit the highway,

0:03:32 > 0:03:35a bottom-numbing seven-hour drive.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38On the journey, the dry and dusty Kruger savannah

0:03:38 > 0:03:43gives way to the lush landscape and coastal forest of KwaZulu-Natal.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46When our rookie rangers get to Rocktail Bay,

0:03:46 > 0:03:51their new surroundings are different to anything they've experienced,

0:03:51 > 0:03:55which makes their drawn-out drive well worth the wait.

0:03:57 > 0:04:01Sea, sand, surf and a seriously excited Safari 8.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08EXCITED SHOUTS AND SCREAMS

0:04:12 > 0:04:17But one member of the team doesn't like to be beside the seaside.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20It seems Tomas has a phobia of wet sand.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24If I went in the water and my feet were soaking, they would stick.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27Look at this now. If I put a little bit there...

0:04:29 > 0:04:32It sticks like tarmac.

0:04:32 > 0:04:36It's really annoying and I'd rather miss out going in the sea.

0:04:36 > 0:04:40- Tomas, do you want to come and touch the water with me?- Yeah.- Come.

0:04:40 > 0:04:44In a bid to help, Ella tries some fear-facing therapy.

0:04:45 > 0:04:47- SCREAMS - Come on, Tomas!

0:04:47 > 0:04:51But her good intentions only make things worse.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54Tomas doesn't like the sea and the beach very much.

0:04:54 > 0:04:58The sand gets in his feet. We're trying to get him more adventurous.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02Aagh! As time goes... As time goes by.

0:05:02 > 0:05:06Everything about this place is lovely apart from the sand.

0:05:06 > 0:05:10With 40 kilometres of beach along the Rocktail Bay coastline,

0:05:10 > 0:05:12that could be a problem,

0:05:12 > 0:05:16but the team can't let a soaking dampen their spirits

0:05:16 > 0:05:21because they're at the Indian Ocean to do more than just paddle.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25- OK, guys, are you enjoying your holiday at the sea?- Yeah!

0:05:25 > 0:05:29You also need to get involved in conservation of marine animals.

0:05:29 > 0:05:34Frankie is going to give you a clue as to what your next task will be.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38There's good reason for lying down on the job

0:05:38 > 0:05:42because Rudi and Frankie have a sandy puzzle for the Safari 8.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46Head to toe like this, our rookie rangers stretch 13 metres,

0:05:46 > 0:05:51the same length as a blubbery creature living in the sea.

0:05:51 > 0:05:53What do you think you are now?

0:05:53 > 0:05:56- The length of a whale!- Well done.

0:05:58 > 0:06:03So whales are the next animal on the Safari 8 checklist.

0:06:03 > 0:06:07These underwater giants are the largest creatures on the planet

0:06:07 > 0:06:09and can live as long as 80 years.

0:06:09 > 0:06:13Humpback whales are off the Rocktail Bay coast six months of the year,

0:06:13 > 0:06:17first heading north to breed and give birth in warmer waters,

0:06:17 > 0:06:22then swimming back south to feed in the nutrient-rich Antarctic Ocean.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36Time for our rookie rangers to leave dry land behind

0:06:36 > 0:06:40and take to the high seas in search of some massive mammals.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44I really can't wait to be on the ocean

0:06:44 > 0:06:47because this is my first time on a boat and I'm really excited.

0:06:47 > 0:06:52I'm excited about going on the boat, but I also feel scared and nervous.

0:06:52 > 0:06:57The sea's quite choppy today and I'm not very good on a choppy sea.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02I love the sea, so I'm really excited.

0:07:02 > 0:07:06I don't think there'll be any screaming on the way out there.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09- SCREAMING - But Ashleigh couldn't be more wrong.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13Launching from the beach in blustery conditions means a bumpy

0:07:13 > 0:07:15and noisy ride.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18'The sea looks so calm.'

0:07:18 > 0:07:21You see these little waves coming to us.

0:07:21 > 0:07:25When you're out there, these big things are like monsters.

0:07:25 > 0:07:28Sadly, there's one person who's missed the boat.

0:07:28 > 0:07:33Ella's not feeling well, so she's staying ashore.

0:07:33 > 0:07:37It's nautical novice Noma who finds her sea legs first.

0:07:37 > 0:07:41It was so cool. As we hit the waves and the water splashed your face

0:07:41 > 0:07:45and you tasted the salt water, I loved every single bit of it.

0:07:45 > 0:07:51And on the boys' boat, Sifiso is also having a whale of a time.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54It was like I was flying in the air

0:07:54 > 0:07:57and it was very exciting driving fast on the water.

0:07:57 > 0:08:01Of all the kids on that boat, he enjoyed it the most.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04Me, on the other hand, didn't.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07All right, we're in the middle of the ocean now.

0:08:07 > 0:08:11It's not the best conditions to find whales, but keep your eyes open.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14One of them might surface close by.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17The fool that I am, I'd taken my glasses off.

0:08:17 > 0:08:20I didn't want them to get wet.

0:08:20 > 0:08:24We were going whale spotting and I took my glasses off!

0:08:24 > 0:08:27We're looking for their blowholes. They need to breathe air.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30They come up and throw these sprays

0:08:30 > 0:08:33of water out of the ocean, so look out for that.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36Whales breathe air just like we do,

0:08:36 > 0:08:39but instead of nostrils, they have a blowhole.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42When a whale surfaces and breathes out,

0:08:42 > 0:08:45it throws a spout of vapour and water high above the sea.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48It's a sign that whales are nearby

0:08:48 > 0:08:52and it's not long before Noma scores the first sighting.

0:08:52 > 0:08:54I can see a dolphin.

0:08:54 > 0:08:56There's a whale.

0:08:56 > 0:08:59I saw a dolphin. Whoo!

0:08:59 > 0:09:03In her excitement, Noma's mistaken a whale for a dolphin.

0:09:03 > 0:09:07With all eyes peeled, next to spot a spout is Tomas.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12Right up there. It was blowing the water.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15With whales breaching nearby,

0:09:15 > 0:09:19our rookie rangers are going to try and listen to them.

0:09:19 > 0:09:23You saw whales breaching down there, so we'll put in this hydrophone,

0:09:23 > 0:09:27an underwater microphone, to try and pick up some whale sounds.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30Tomas, Manya, let me know when you hear something.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32HIGH-PITCHED CRIES

0:09:33 > 0:09:37Yeah, can you hear something?

0:09:37 > 0:09:41Tomas can't believe his ears and wants Frankie to listen too.

0:09:42 > 0:09:44FAINT CRIES

0:09:44 > 0:09:48Even a ranger can be impressed by the sound of whales.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53Humpbacks are well known for their mysterious songs.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56It's only the males who sing

0:09:56 > 0:09:59and they make these sounds to attract a female mate.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02Oh, there's the fin!

0:10:02 > 0:10:06Weighing in at 40 tons, the same as three double-decker buses,

0:10:06 > 0:10:08an adult humpback is hard to miss.

0:10:08 > 0:10:12And their songs can be heard over 100 kilometres away.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15DISTANT WHALE SONG

0:10:19 > 0:10:22Such a beautiful sound and so much fun listening to them.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25They're like... MIMICS WHALE SOUNDS

0:10:30 > 0:10:32DISTANT WHALE SONG

0:10:34 > 0:10:36Whales swim in groups called pods.

0:10:36 > 0:10:41The girls are very close to one and Noma is taking it all in her stride.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45It's kind of scary, but when you look how beautiful it is,

0:10:45 > 0:10:48it's just that thing of, "Oh, this is so cool!"

0:10:48 > 0:10:51My dad is never the person at the ocean.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54He's always the one who says,

0:10:54 > 0:10:57"Stay away from the ocean. It's dangerous!"

0:10:57 > 0:11:00So I can't wait to tell him about this

0:11:00 > 0:11:05and to tell him, "Dad, I was on the ocean and it was 80 metres deep!"

0:11:05 > 0:11:09But Caroline isn't coping with the motion of the ocean.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11I love it, but I'm feeling sick.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14'It was really fun on the way there,'

0:11:14 > 0:11:19but once we stopped and were floating in the water, it was quite sickening.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23We've been out here for a while. The conditions are not too great.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26At least we heard them and Tomas saw one.

0:11:26 > 0:11:30- Let's head back to shore.- Yes!

0:11:30 > 0:11:33For Caroline, they're not heading back soon enough.

0:11:33 > 0:11:35I think I'm going to be sick.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38'After I was sick, I felt a lot better.'

0:11:38 > 0:11:41And I could enjoy it more.

0:11:41 > 0:11:45So it was a lot of fun, but quite minging.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47And for landlubber Ashleigh,

0:11:47 > 0:11:51getting back to solid ground is a genuine relief.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54Yes! Yes! LAUGHTER

0:11:54 > 0:11:58This definitely wasn't my best Safari 8 experience.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00I couldn't enjoy myself.

0:12:00 > 0:12:04I don't even think I saw a whale because I was holding on so tight.

0:12:04 > 0:12:08I didn't think we would do anything like this in the beginning.

0:12:08 > 0:12:12There's no sea in Kruger, so this is a great surprise.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14It was wicked. I had so much fun.

0:12:14 > 0:12:18It was such a good experience, especially hearing the whales.

0:12:18 > 0:12:24Coming up, the Safari 8 head inland in search of a hefty inhabitant.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27- Whoa!- And halfway through ranger training,

0:12:27 > 0:12:30our rookies are told to pull their socks up.

0:12:30 > 0:12:34Being a ranger, you need to take everything seriously.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37# Let's go surfing now, everybody's learning how

0:12:37 > 0:12:40# Come on a safari with me... #

0:12:40 > 0:12:43The Safari 8 are back on dry land.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46Rudi and Frankie are keen to focus on teamwork.

0:12:46 > 0:12:50We've got an interesting challenge for you. We are dune-boarding.

0:12:50 > 0:12:54- Oh, yes!- Are you up for the challenge?- Yes!- Excellent.

0:12:54 > 0:12:58We'll split up in two teams. One guy surfs to the bottom.

0:12:58 > 0:13:02He runs up to the top, grabs the board and slides down.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05Then your team member goes up again.

0:13:05 > 0:13:09Working together will be vital for our rookies' final safari challenge.

0:13:09 > 0:13:14Tomas provides an immediate chance for the team to hone their skills.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17He's got a sore leg and can't run uphill.

0:13:17 > 0:13:21- How are you going to sort this out? - You should start at the top.

0:13:21 > 0:13:25- The fastest runner is probably Manya. Would that be OK?- Yeah.

0:13:25 > 0:13:29Manya could run up two times on your behalf, then you could slide down.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32- OK?- Yeah.- Excellent.

0:13:32 > 0:13:36With a plan in place and Tomas in position for Team Rudi,

0:13:36 > 0:13:39there's only one thing left to do - dune-board!

0:13:39 > 0:13:43This coastal dune has taken 25,000 years to form,

0:13:43 > 0:13:46but Manya's demolished it in seconds.

0:13:46 > 0:13:50And with a heroic dive, he tags team-mate Tomas.

0:13:50 > 0:13:52ALL SHOUT ENCOURAGEMENT

0:13:52 > 0:13:56On the downhill, dune-boarding is all about technique.

0:13:56 > 0:14:00Ella's unorthodox paddling puts her past Tomas

0:14:00 > 0:14:03and takes Team Frankie into the lead.

0:14:04 > 0:14:09And while Tomas struggles, Sifiso is off to a flyer.

0:14:09 > 0:14:14Caroline gives chase, but she's got a lot of ground to make up.

0:14:17 > 0:14:21Amazingly and with super-human effort,

0:14:21 > 0:14:24Caroline draws level with Sifiso

0:14:24 > 0:14:27and it's neck and neck on the way down.

0:14:30 > 0:14:34The highest dune on this stretch of coastline is taller

0:14:34 > 0:14:37than Blackpool Tower, but this is no donkey ride.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40SHOUTING CONTINUES

0:14:40 > 0:14:45Ashleigh and Noma give it everything they've got and turn in tandem.

0:14:46 > 0:14:50But as Noma falters, Ashleigh crawls out in front for Team Frankie.

0:14:57 > 0:15:01And she releases Kushal to make the final run.

0:15:01 > 0:15:04Come on, Kushal!

0:15:04 > 0:15:09So it's left to Manya on his second breathtaking ascent

0:15:09 > 0:15:12to try and steal Team Rudi a victory.

0:15:13 > 0:15:17That's a huge task and too big an ask

0:15:17 > 0:15:21because Kushal is scrambling closer and closer to the finish line.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25CHEERING

0:15:25 > 0:15:30A valiant effort by Manya, but too late as Team Frankie triumph.

0:15:30 > 0:15:35- Well done, guys.- It was tough going twice. I was tired the second time.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38But we did well as a team. They were just a bit faster.

0:15:38 > 0:15:42It was amazing. The adrenaline was like, "Whoa!"

0:15:42 > 0:15:45I had to do it. You've got to have a laugh and everything.

0:15:45 > 0:15:49So I just went with it and I felt really good.

0:15:51 > 0:15:56After the excitement of the dunes, the Safari 8 are venturing inland

0:15:56 > 0:15:58to the tranquillity of Lake Sibaya.

0:15:58 > 0:16:02This is the largest freshwater lake in South Africa

0:16:02 > 0:16:05and is five times the size of Lake Windermere.

0:16:05 > 0:16:08We decided to come down to Lake Sibaya today

0:16:08 > 0:16:11to show the kids a massive inland lake.

0:16:11 > 0:16:16It's quite rich in birdlife. For us, this was our highlight so far.

0:16:16 > 0:16:21Lake Sibaya holds the richest birdlife in all of Africa.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24Some 279 bird species have been recorded here.

0:16:24 > 0:16:26Also hippos and crocs.

0:16:26 > 0:16:30Just to show the kids that you get them not just in the park,

0:16:30 > 0:16:32but also all through South Africa.

0:16:32 > 0:16:36The Wetland Park around Lake Sibaya and Rocktail Bay

0:16:36 > 0:16:40has a greater diversity of animal species than Kruger

0:16:40 > 0:16:44and it's the perfect place for our rookies to glimpse a hippopotamus.

0:16:44 > 0:16:49- Manya!- Yeah.- It looks a bit like a rock.- Yeah.- But it's moving.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52- It's going down.- It's a moving rock.

0:16:52 > 0:16:56A hippo can hold its breath under water for six minutes.

0:16:56 > 0:16:59Their name means "river horse",

0:16:59 > 0:17:02but their closest living cousin is the whale.

0:17:02 > 0:17:06He's so wrinkly. He reminds me of my gran!

0:17:06 > 0:17:09They swim up to their nose under the water,

0:17:09 > 0:17:13then they'll lift up and go back down again. It's fascinating.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16There was a baby and it was opening its mouth!

0:17:17 > 0:17:21We've learnt that they've got a gland that lets out like pink sunscreen,

0:17:21 > 0:17:24so it protects them from the sun.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27A group of hippos is called a bloat,

0:17:27 > 0:17:31but they're not the only aquatic animals found at Lake Sibaya.

0:17:31 > 0:17:34There are also some fearsome reptile residents.

0:17:34 > 0:17:38If it's deep and dark water, you don't see crocodiles,

0:17:38 > 0:17:42- so you don't go in it. There's a crocodile.- Yeah.- Oh, wow!

0:17:43 > 0:17:48- Whoa!- Crocodiles have the strongest bite of any animal

0:17:48 > 0:17:52and from his own ranger experience of this snappy species,

0:17:52 > 0:17:54Rudi has a gripping fact.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57You can hold a crocodile's mouth closed

0:17:57 > 0:18:02because the muscles going out are very, very weak. OK?

0:18:02 > 0:18:06The muscles going down are very, very strong.

0:18:06 > 0:18:11- How long do you think crocodiles existed on Earth?- 4 million years?

0:18:11 > 0:18:14- Since dinosaurs maybe? - 2 million years?

0:18:14 > 0:18:19The correct answer is... 200 million years.

0:18:19 > 0:18:23That's why they're so clever. When you walk through a river,

0:18:23 > 0:18:26a crocodile will not take you the first time

0:18:26 > 0:18:30because he knows humans are creatures of habit.

0:18:30 > 0:18:34If you go through a river and you end up on the other side safe,

0:18:34 > 0:18:38nothing bit you, and you have to cross the river again,

0:18:38 > 0:18:42where will you cross? The same place because the first time it was safe.

0:18:42 > 0:18:44Crocodiles also know that.

0:18:44 > 0:18:48- If you cross a river, you should cross in a different place?- Yes.

0:18:48 > 0:18:53- Why cross a river with crocodiles in it?- To get to the other side.

0:18:53 > 0:18:55LAUGHTER

0:18:55 > 0:18:58Yes, fun and joke!

0:18:58 > 0:19:02Out of the Safari 8 group, Ashleigh is quite interested.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05Oh, my gosh! What type of crocodile is that?

0:19:05 > 0:19:08'She wants to borrow my binoculars all the time.'

0:19:08 > 0:19:12I think Noma as well. Noma is quite interested in this lake, yeah.

0:19:12 > 0:19:16And visiting Lake Sibaya has helped Ella overcome a fear

0:19:16 > 0:19:18that's been troubling her.

0:19:18 > 0:19:22I'm less scared of crocodiles. I was a bit nervous about seeing them.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25But I'm a bit more relaxed now.

0:19:27 > 0:19:31- ALL: The Safari 8! - A giraffe!- I don't like spiders.

0:19:31 > 0:19:36The Safari 8 are halfway through their month-long adventure.

0:19:36 > 0:19:39So far, the team have pregnancy-tested buffalo,

0:19:39 > 0:19:43given lions a health check, tracked elephant and rhino,

0:19:43 > 0:19:47entered into some friendly competition

0:19:47 > 0:19:49and picked up plenty of poo.

0:19:49 > 0:19:52Our rookies have racked up the ranger experience,

0:19:52 > 0:19:54training for one final mission -

0:19:54 > 0:19:59to lead a two-day safari in search of South Africa's big five.

0:19:59 > 0:20:04It's a challenge for which every team member must be 100% prepared,

0:20:04 > 0:20:09but Rudi and Frankie aren't convinced that anyone's ready.

0:20:09 > 0:20:13We'll have to wait a couple of weeks and see if they'll gel like a team.

0:20:13 > 0:20:18So, from here on in, ranger training is going to get a whole lot tougher,

0:20:18 > 0:20:22starting with some brutally honest midway reports.

0:20:22 > 0:20:26And first to face the music is Tomas.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30Tomas, first of all, put your shirt in.

0:20:32 > 0:20:36OK, Tomas, you're definitely the joker of the group.

0:20:38 > 0:20:44You always keep the team laughing and you're great with the team.

0:20:44 > 0:20:48We think you need to take this a bit more seriously.

0:20:48 > 0:20:52You are the scruffiest of all the eight kids.

0:20:52 > 0:20:57As a ranger, when you get your uniform, it's a pride thing.

0:20:57 > 0:21:01My proudest moment was my first uniform as a guide.

0:21:01 > 0:21:03You need to start accepting that.

0:21:03 > 0:21:07I'm not used to tucking shirts in cos it just looks geeky.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10But I suppose you have to do it with this job.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16You've got a bubbling personality.

0:21:17 > 0:21:21Very willing, very keen to help others.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24But there's a downside to it as well.

0:21:24 > 0:21:28You need to find your inner strength.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31A ranger's job is tough at certain times.

0:21:31 > 0:21:37With the rhino, that didn't help my appearance of being strong.

0:21:37 > 0:21:41You might have a client that feels the same way like you.

0:21:41 > 0:21:46He or she might break down in tears and you need to be the stronger one.

0:21:46 > 0:21:51I really understood why they said I have to be strong for other people.

0:21:51 > 0:21:55I need to be strong for them and for myself too.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59Manya, you started off with a bang.

0:21:59 > 0:22:02- Well done.- Who saw that first? - I did.

0:22:02 > 0:22:07You ask questions. There's a lot of potential in you to be a leader.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10Manya, take us back, please.

0:22:10 > 0:22:14But as the week's gone, you've slowly faded away in the background.

0:22:14 > 0:22:18You are distracted by the jokers in the group.

0:22:18 > 0:22:21Do you think he had diarrhoea? LAUGHTER

0:22:21 > 0:22:25We need you to channel your energies more into the training

0:22:25 > 0:22:27and stop mucking about.

0:22:27 > 0:22:31I think it was really tough, hearing what they were saying.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34It was quite a blow, but I think they're absolutely right

0:22:34 > 0:22:37and I understand what they're saying.

0:22:37 > 0:22:39- Thank you.- Thanks, Manya.

0:22:40 > 0:22:42Hello.

0:22:42 > 0:22:46Well, Noma, we have summed you up as an extremely bright girl.

0:22:46 > 0:22:51Things you do, questions you ask are really in depth and intellectual.

0:22:51 > 0:22:53If the female is bigger than the male,

0:22:53 > 0:22:57is it going to be much deeper or just wider?

0:22:57 > 0:23:00You're very quiet most of the time

0:23:00 > 0:23:04and we're worried actually that you're not enjoying it.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07So I'm going to reprimand you a bit now

0:23:07 > 0:23:12because I know that you're part of a debating team.

0:23:12 > 0:23:16This is not only according to South Africa, but other countries as well.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19So we need you to come out a bit.

0:23:19 > 0:23:21We need you to show it to us.

0:23:21 > 0:23:26I think I should accept the environment I'm in and get used to it

0:23:26 > 0:23:29and be this happy person when I am happy.

0:23:31 > 0:23:35- Hello, Ashleigh. - I'm really scared.

0:23:35 > 0:23:39You've studied a lot. Your knowledge is incredible.

0:23:39 > 0:23:43It's an elephant because the toenails are stuck on the side of the foot.

0:23:43 > 0:23:46You're probably the strongest of the girl team.

0:23:46 > 0:23:50Your enthusiasm is there for certain things, but you seem bored.

0:23:50 > 0:23:54You can't follow pathways, so teamwork is important.

0:23:54 > 0:23:59A ranger needs to take everything seriously. Even the smallest insect.

0:24:00 > 0:24:05There is a colossal amount of things that allow the big five to be here.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08We feel you're taking those things for granted.

0:24:08 > 0:24:13I am interested in other animals. I've made myself a checklist.

0:24:13 > 0:24:16So I was a bit confused about that.

0:24:17 > 0:24:20Hi, Sifiso. Your enthusiasm is great.

0:24:21 > 0:24:24Oh, yeah, that was amazing!

0:24:25 > 0:24:29I can see you've got questions, but you're worried about asking them.

0:24:29 > 0:24:33Something that feeds on grass. It's much darker.

0:24:33 > 0:24:35I had a teacher that said to me,

0:24:35 > 0:24:39"If you ask a question, you're only stupid for a short while.

0:24:39 > 0:24:42"If you don't ask a question, you'll stay stupid."

0:24:42 > 0:24:47So that enthusiasm, we need that to come out in being a ranger.

0:24:47 > 0:24:49I want to see it.

0:24:49 > 0:24:54You've got what it takes. We just need to work on your confidence.

0:24:54 > 0:24:56Giving goals and motivations,

0:24:56 > 0:25:00that was very encouraging to me and it builds me up.

0:25:01 > 0:25:03- Hello, Caroline.- Hi.

0:25:03 > 0:25:06You're really a bubbly personality.

0:25:06 > 0:25:08You have got a lot of energy.

0:25:08 > 0:25:11Yes, whoo-hoo! Five!

0:25:11 > 0:25:15But in turn also you're distracting the group through that.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18- I won't like this. - Sometimes you're Caroline.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20Is it the leopard shelter?

0:25:20 > 0:25:22Yes, so you learnt.

0:25:22 > 0:25:26And sometimes you're someone that you're not.

0:25:26 > 0:25:31They're in my sleeping bag and I'm not sleeping here. I don't like it.

0:25:31 > 0:25:34This is Africa. You must realise this is not Scotland.

0:25:34 > 0:25:38Insects and creepy-crawlies are all around us.

0:25:38 > 0:25:42- You can't scream every time you see an ant.- Aaaagh!

0:25:42 > 0:25:44Aaagh, there's a tick!

0:25:44 > 0:25:48I know I'm scared of bugs and I can't help that.

0:25:48 > 0:25:52I know sometimes I am over-dramatic, but I just don't like bugs.

0:25:55 > 0:26:00Right, Kushal, we feel that you're really keen.

0:26:00 > 0:26:02You are asking a lot of questions.

0:26:02 > 0:26:04Can I ask a question?

0:26:04 > 0:26:08You do, however, vocalise too quickly what you think.

0:26:08 > 0:26:12The whole thing should be flat like that, but it's just a bundle.

0:26:12 > 0:26:17Life is not just about winning. If you lose, bite the bullet.

0:26:17 > 0:26:20I could be heading to Sundown right now.

0:26:20 > 0:26:26There's a lot of disappointments being a ranger. Deal with it.

0:26:26 > 0:26:30I've got to knuckle down and listen to what they're saying.

0:26:30 > 0:26:32I need to really try my hardest

0:26:32 > 0:26:35because I've got so much more to give.

0:26:35 > 0:26:39Rudi and Frankie just want to help us constantly to be better rangers.

0:26:39 > 0:26:43It feels like we've known each other for ten years.

0:26:43 > 0:26:45We're comfortable with each other.

0:26:45 > 0:26:49- What do you say for something that's not super-cool?- Mingin'.

0:26:49 > 0:26:53Yeah. Minging or "manging"? Is it minging or "manging"?

0:26:53 > 0:26:56- Check out my head torch. - You say, "Och, aye, the noo."

0:26:56 > 0:26:58Och, aye, noo-noo.

0:27:00 > 0:27:03What is that? What is that?

0:27:03 > 0:27:05No, Caroline, don't laugh!

0:27:06 > 0:27:10The noise of the whales, they go... MAKES HIGH-PITCHED SOUNDS

0:27:10 > 0:27:13- What is it?- "Och, aye, noo-noo"?

0:27:13 > 0:27:15I said, "Och, aye, the noo."

0:27:16 > 0:27:19Wait. Och, aye, noo-noo.

0:27:21 > 0:27:25Next time, the Safari 8 get right back to basics, Zulu-style.

0:27:25 > 0:27:29I find it a bit unfair that the boys had to do basically nothing

0:27:29 > 0:27:31and we had to do all the work.

0:27:31 > 0:27:36The team bust their best moves in a traditional dance-off.

0:27:36 > 0:27:42- We still want this.- And there are plenty of tears before bedtime.

0:27:42 > 0:27:45When I first saw my mum, I was in tears.
