0:00:03 > 0:00:06are taking on the toughest challenge of their lives -

0:00:06 > 0:00:09an extreme expedition in South America.

0:00:09 > 0:00:11That is mad!

0:00:11 > 0:00:13They're attempting a series of astonishing world firsts...

0:00:13 > 0:00:15Oh, my God!

0:00:15 > 0:00:18..going where no children have been before

0:00:18 > 0:00:21to get to some of the most awesome places on earth.

0:00:21 > 0:00:23- We've reached the top! - Land to starboard!

0:00:23 > 0:00:26The team are following in the footsteps

0:00:26 > 0:00:28of the great Elizabethan, Sir Walter Raleigh,

0:00:28 > 0:00:32the first Englishman to explore Guyana as he searched for El Dorado,

0:00:32 > 0:00:34the lost city of gold.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38Led by survival expert Ben Major

0:00:38 > 0:00:40and record-breaking adventurer Polly Murray,

0:00:40 > 0:00:45the epic journey will push the seven explorers to the limit and beyond.

0:00:49 > 0:00:51It's all bad!

0:00:51 > 0:00:54I hate you so much!

0:00:54 > 0:00:55You having a laugh?!

0:00:55 > 0:00:57It's too scary.

0:01:00 > 0:01:01Coming up,

0:01:01 > 0:01:07an unbelievable challenge - paddling 75 miles down a jungle river.

0:01:07 > 0:01:11My bum absolutely kills. I just want to walk the rest of it.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14And climbing high in the rainforest -

0:01:14 > 0:01:16a rare encounter 100 feet up.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18She's checking me out for dinner!

0:01:21 > 0:01:25Previously, the explorers have spent a week in the rainforests of Guyana

0:01:25 > 0:01:30- training in jungle survival skills. - Urrghh!- Whoa!

0:01:30 > 0:01:34Some, like Sammie, were spooked by the wildlife.

0:01:34 > 0:01:35OK, take him back, take him back!

0:01:35 > 0:01:39Unlike Regan, who's a total rainforest enthusiast.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42Oh, it's a bumblebee poison dart frog!

0:01:42 > 0:01:45Two-tonne dugout canoes proved tricky to steer.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48Oh, no!

0:01:48 > 0:01:51The three-person canoe finally got the hang of it.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53Just one stroke on the right.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56But the four-person canoe struggled badly...

0:01:56 > 0:01:58You're going straight into the bushes!

0:01:58 > 0:02:00- Why are you there?- I'm the director.

0:02:00 > 0:02:04..leading to clashes between Nikita and the boys on the boat, Regan and Jake.

0:02:04 > 0:02:09- Right, paddle!- Move that way! - Where are you going? You need to work harder.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17With the explorers' intense jungle training week finally completed,

0:02:17 > 0:02:20it's time to discover what it's all been leading up to.

0:02:20 > 0:02:24From here, we're going to be going by dugout canoe

0:02:24 > 0:02:29down the Burro-Burro River for approximately 70 miles.

0:02:29 > 0:02:30Oh, wow!

0:02:31 > 0:02:34The epic journey has never been attempted by children before.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37They've just five days to get to the end of the remote river.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43- We've really, really got to pull together. What do you think about that?- Exciting.

0:02:43 > 0:02:47- Yeah, I'm excited.- Tiring. - Except for the jungle camp.

0:02:47 > 0:02:52We're going to have some strong arms by the end of it, I'll say that.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55When Sir Walter Raleigh came to Guyana 400 years ago,

0:02:55 > 0:02:59he travelled whenever possible by rowing boat or dugout canoe

0:02:59 > 0:03:02and he found it extremely tough.

0:03:02 > 0:03:07"We began to despair, the weather being extreme hot.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10"The further we went on the river, the weaker and weaker we grew."

0:03:14 > 0:03:21The Serious Explorers have to take with them everything they'll need to survive for five days.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23You should have four paddles in there.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26They've a total journey of 75 miles

0:03:26 > 0:03:28to where the Burro-Burro ends

0:03:28 > 0:03:30at the Sipuruni River.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33So each day they have to cover around 15 miles

0:03:33 > 0:03:34to stay on schedule.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36Let's get out of here.

0:03:36 > 0:03:37Get that paddle.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42It's going to be really tough.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45Dugout canoes are not easy things to steer,

0:03:45 > 0:03:48to paddle, to manoeuvre, they are just awkward.

0:03:48 > 0:03:54I know it's going to be tough as, like properly hard, but I'm really looking forward to it.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57Our boat will probably get stuck, it'll probably capsize.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00A lot of things are going to happen. It's going to be very fun.

0:04:00 > 0:04:01So, pretty cool.

0:04:03 > 0:04:09- Oh, my God.- Disaster strikes in the first five minutes.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12- Straight for the bushes.- Let's try and get this direction sorted, guys.

0:04:14 > 0:04:19The four-person canoe crew are still failing to pull together as a team.

0:04:19 > 0:04:24Oh, my God! That's just...aargh! You two paddle on this way.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27- You two paddle that way, quick! - It doesn't paddle as quick.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29We went crashing into a bush,

0:04:29 > 0:04:33because the people at the back are paddling the same way as us.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35And that's the wrong way.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41In contrast, the three-person canoe is in complete harmony.

0:04:41 > 0:04:46With Michael steering at the back, they're getting further and further ahead.

0:04:46 > 0:04:47Bushes ahead, guys!

0:04:47 > 0:04:51But Nikita's boat is soon in even more trouble.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Are you joking?

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Jake has dropped his paddle in the water.

0:05:00 > 0:05:04We have to get it. We have to find it.

0:05:04 > 0:05:05No, it's sunk!

0:05:07 > 0:05:09The other team are so far ahead,

0:05:09 > 0:05:11they've pulled into the side to wait.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14- Whoa!- What was that? - My paddle.- You're joking.

0:05:15 > 0:05:20Michael's paddle has also sunk to the bottom of the river.

0:05:20 > 0:05:24- You...doughnut! - You've dropped another paddle?

0:05:24 > 0:05:26Yeah. It slid off the boat.

0:05:26 > 0:05:30You absolute muppets! How are you going to paddle downstream without a paddle?

0:05:30 > 0:05:34We're going backwards and we're turning round!

0:05:34 > 0:05:37It takes 20 minutes for Nikita's crew to catch up.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40It's not been a promising start.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43In short, sorry, not good enough, all right?

0:05:43 > 0:05:45We have made half a mile in an hour.

0:05:45 > 0:05:50All we've heard is you four bickering and shouting at one another.

0:05:50 > 0:05:55At this rate, guys, we're still going to be paddling at midnight tonight. Get it sorted.

0:05:55 > 0:05:58Each team is given a new paddle,

0:05:58 > 0:06:02but, for the four-person canoe, things go from bad to worse.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12- He's in a bush. - Just let yourself drift backwards.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15What are you doing? Don't push it in!

0:06:15 > 0:06:18HE LAUGHS

0:06:18 > 0:06:19Paddle back.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21It doesn't work.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24It doesn't work!

0:06:27 > 0:06:31What are they doing? Are they trying to be awful?

0:06:38 > 0:06:42Everything was OK. When people started moving, that's when we crashed.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45She hits on any boy that's in her way!

0:06:45 > 0:06:48No-one wants to be on the same team as her.

0:06:48 > 0:06:53Every time I listen to them THINGS at the back - that pond life,

0:06:53 > 0:06:56we end up going all weird ways.

0:06:56 > 0:07:00Nikita actually is the best in the boat, she understands steering,

0:07:00 > 0:07:02but she's getting frustrated with the lack of support

0:07:02 > 0:07:04from everyone else in the boat.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07Jake, just paddle, you don't need to do anything.

0:07:07 > 0:07:13But, of course, we all know Nikita and her delivery of instructions can be taken the wrong way.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16Oh for goodness sake! See, I told you!

0:07:16 > 0:07:19Four hours in, the expedition stops for lunch.

0:07:19 > 0:07:25Though it's nearly half an hour later before Nikita's canoe finally arrives.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27Jake don't look too happy!

0:07:27 > 0:07:32When you actually cut down the chitter-chatter, you actually do really well,

0:07:32 > 0:07:35and so less gob, more effort might make more sense, huh?

0:07:35 > 0:07:37Nikita?

0:07:37 > 0:07:41- Can I just say something, please? - I can just see you're waiting.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44- The thing what gets me annoyed is he states the obvious. - What do you mean he?

0:07:44 > 0:07:46That!

0:07:46 > 0:07:48Who is that?

0:07:48 > 0:07:50- I dunno.- Is that Jake?

0:07:50 > 0:07:54Seriously, he states the obvious. Me and Simon said, "We need to go faster a minute,"

0:07:54 > 0:07:57and he's, "We need to go faster! Keep going!" Really(?)

0:07:57 > 0:07:59That's because you two were slowing down.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02The first two hours, me and Sammie were doing everything.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04Nikita, I can assure you that

0:08:04 > 0:08:07for the first two hours, you weren't doing all the work.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10- ALL:- Ohhhhh! - Not a chance.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14Jake and Nikita just can't seem to get on together.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16She needs to communicate a lot more,

0:08:16 > 0:08:20I cannot see from the back of the boat. She can, she's at the front.

0:08:20 > 0:08:25And try not to be so cocky and try not to be so cheeky as much.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28If I get annoyed, I just cannot control myself,

0:08:28 > 0:08:29I just go in a big mood swing.

0:08:29 > 0:08:32But today he's annoyed me so much and I don't have clue why.

0:08:32 > 0:08:37After Ben's chat, both are on best behaviour through the afternoon.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39Obviously not, thicko!

0:08:41 > 0:08:42Most of the time at least!

0:08:42 > 0:08:46The right is that way, and we need to keep away from it.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48Looking better, keep it up. Well done, guys!

0:08:50 > 0:08:54And after seven hours of paddling, they cover the day's 15 miles.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58- Wahey! We have arrived. - We've done it!

0:08:59 > 0:09:02They're just one day into the five day marathon,

0:09:02 > 0:09:05and it's already starting to take its toll.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07My shoulders hurt by the time I got off.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09But it's your bum that hurts,

0:09:09 > 0:09:12because its so uncomfortable sitting on those wooden blocks.

0:09:12 > 0:09:16All my blisters are coming off my hands and that really hurts.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19I've got blisters along the top of my hand.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21It's OK, it's just keeping it up.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24And their day is far from over.

0:09:24 > 0:09:28The tired team now have to set up an entire jungle camp from scratch.

0:09:28 > 0:09:33From putting up hammocks, to digging a poo pit.

0:09:33 > 0:09:38- Josh!- Yeah?- Can you dig this bit, cos I can't do it.

0:09:39 > 0:09:44- Well, how did you do that? - Just try.- Yeah, I did try!

0:09:44 > 0:09:47The team feel that Sammie's not pulling her weight.

0:09:49 > 0:09:51'I'm just a bit lazy tonight.

0:09:51 > 0:09:54'I'm a bit lazy every night, but I'm a bit extra lazy tonight.'

0:09:54 > 0:09:56I can't be bothered.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00You've got so much potential,

0:10:00 > 0:10:04but you just allow other people to do stuff for you.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06You've got to start thinking for yourself.

0:10:06 > 0:10:10We just want to get you thinking, "I'm Sammie and I'm a go-getter!"

0:10:10 > 0:10:13- You know what I mean? - Fair enough, because it's true.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16I get like...

0:10:16 > 0:10:19lazy, like you said. And I don't bother.

0:10:19 > 0:10:21But I am going to try not doing that.

0:10:21 > 0:10:24Cos I know it's unfair on the rest of the group and that.

0:10:24 > 0:10:25As they prepare for bed,

0:10:25 > 0:10:31Megan is latest to fall victim to the blood-sucking ticks.

0:10:31 > 0:10:32That is huge, like a spider!

0:10:32 > 0:10:35- I wanted everyone to see it! - That is big!

0:10:35 > 0:10:37Well, can you please get it off me?

0:10:38 > 0:10:41I don't want everyone having a look at my tick!

0:10:41 > 0:10:44It's started spreading its legs out and made itself comfy!

0:10:44 > 0:10:48Expedition doctor Fi hopes to remove it with tweezers.

0:10:48 > 0:10:52Might just be able to pull it. Let's hope so anyway.

0:10:52 > 0:10:54Oh, let go! That's not fair!

0:10:54 > 0:10:56Let go! Ohh...

0:10:56 > 0:10:58Yay! Release!

0:10:58 > 0:11:01- Make sure that's dead and killed. - That is well and truly dead.

0:11:01 > 0:11:05Jake has a different problem.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07I've got a bit of a headache from today.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10From Nikita's voice going through me!

0:11:10 > 0:11:12We were all just arguing all day.

0:11:12 > 0:11:14But towards the end it was fine,

0:11:14 > 0:11:17but just like the start and through the middle

0:11:17 > 0:11:19it was just "Nyah, nyah, nyah!"

0:11:21 > 0:11:2315 miles to go. Up for it?

0:11:23 > 0:11:26Yeah? All good? Let's get paddling!

0:11:26 > 0:11:28Day two, and they've got it all to do again.

0:11:30 > 0:11:34But the four person canoe team are soon back to their old tricks.

0:11:34 > 0:11:36Hello?! Go to the left!

0:11:36 > 0:11:39Just a little, just a little!

0:11:39 > 0:11:41Paddle! You have to paddle now.

0:11:41 > 0:11:45And they quickly fall well behind.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48THEY SING "THE LION SLEEPS TONIGHT"

0:11:48 > 0:11:51Josh, Megan and Michael are powering ahead as usual,

0:11:51 > 0:11:55but for once, being in front proves a major disadvantage.

0:11:55 > 0:11:57Oh!

0:11:57 > 0:12:01They plough into a wasps' nest in some overhanging branches.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07Get them off my head!

0:12:07 > 0:12:09- OK.- Ah! Oh, my head!

0:12:09 > 0:12:12I've been stung about 30 times on my head.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15Three times on the arm and it kind of hurts!

0:12:15 > 0:12:17There's one in my head there.

0:12:17 > 0:12:21Expedition doctor, Henry, checks them out.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24- Nobody's allergic to wasp stings or bee stings?- No.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27Luckily, they're not the worst kind of jungle wasp.

0:12:27 > 0:12:31The stings have not swollen up hugely and everybody's in good spirits

0:12:31 > 0:12:35and not showing any signs of great sensitivity to it.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38So we've just given them something to treat the pain and the sting.

0:12:38 > 0:12:43One, two, three, four, five...

0:12:43 > 0:12:45Six, seven on your back. Two on your back.

0:12:45 > 0:12:49Seven, and I've got two on my tummy. So it's about nine times.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51My head kills!

0:12:51 > 0:12:54As the rain starts to bucket down,

0:12:54 > 0:12:58the four person canoe is now badly stuck on a submerged log.

0:12:58 > 0:13:00We have to move it towards you.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04Get somebody in charge and then on the count of three, push it out.

0:13:04 > 0:13:06Three, two, one!

0:13:07 > 0:13:10It'll never go forward. I go forward.

0:13:10 > 0:13:11Sammie, are you OK?

0:13:13 > 0:13:17They're soaked through and starting to get dangerously cold.

0:13:17 > 0:13:21The more exercise you do, your bodies will warm up a little bit.

0:13:21 > 0:13:22So you need to be paddling,

0:13:22 > 0:13:25you need to get out of this rain sooner rather than later.

0:13:25 > 0:13:28Get paddling. It's going to warm you up.

0:13:28 > 0:13:34We have been awful, awful, awful, throughout today.

0:13:34 > 0:13:38We tried new positions and we went faster -

0:13:38 > 0:13:40faster into the tree trunks, that is!

0:13:42 > 0:13:46At the next break, Ben decides enough is enough.

0:13:46 > 0:13:47Morale has gone zzzzt.

0:13:47 > 0:13:50I've never seen Jake look so down.

0:13:50 > 0:13:54Nikita's just silent - which says a lot in itself.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56Sammie - broken.

0:13:56 > 0:13:59And Regan pretty much broken.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01Any they're now freezing cold as well.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03We have to take some drastic measures.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06- We've got to make the distance. - We've got nine more miles.

0:14:06 > 0:14:12Therefore, Michael, you're going into their boat, OK?

0:14:12 > 0:14:14Regan, you're going into the other boat, OK?

0:14:14 > 0:14:18I'm not happy about going into the other boat, morale's not very good.

0:14:18 > 0:14:20But if we can help everyone out, I'm happy to do that.

0:14:20 > 0:14:25I think it'll help a lot and I'll shout quite a lot.

0:14:25 > 0:14:28But I don't really mean to, so I'm going to try not to.

0:14:28 > 0:14:30With top steerer Michael aboard,

0:14:30 > 0:14:34the four person canoe undergoes an amazing transformation.

0:14:34 > 0:14:37- Paddle, paddle, paddle! - Paddle hard.

0:14:41 > 0:14:45But the three person canoe then takes over as the lame duck.

0:14:50 > 0:14:54It's Michael, he must be the best at steering ever!

0:14:54 > 0:14:56But I'm sure we'll get better.

0:14:56 > 0:14:57I hope so, anyway.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06Everything just went well since Michael came on the boat.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09I'm paddling properly now and we're in front for once.

0:15:09 > 0:15:12So I just think the whole mood's changed.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21You have the biggest spider on your head!

0:15:21 > 0:15:23Get it off me! Get it off me! SHE SCREAMS

0:15:23 > 0:15:26Suddenly they spot something in the trees.

0:15:26 > 0:15:31- Up there.- Howler monkeys!- Where? - Right at the top, you see it?

0:15:31 > 0:15:34- Three monkeys! - Red howler monkeys, yeah?

0:15:34 > 0:15:38- Oh, that is so cool! Oh!- I want it!

0:15:39 > 0:15:43The beautiful orangey-brown howler monkeys are only found

0:15:43 > 0:15:44in the jungles of Latin America.

0:15:44 > 0:15:47They're named after their howling call.

0:15:49 > 0:15:51Oh it's got a baby on its back!

0:15:51 > 0:15:55They were at the very top of the trees

0:15:55 > 0:15:58and it was just so cool to see them swinging about and stuff.

0:15:58 > 0:16:03There were three adults, and one baby on one of them's back.

0:16:03 > 0:16:06They were sat on that tree and hopped along the trees.

0:16:06 > 0:16:07That's amazingly cool!

0:16:10 > 0:16:14In the end, they almost hit their target for the day,

0:16:14 > 0:16:17covering 14 miles in eight hours.

0:16:17 > 0:16:19Pretty fed up this morning,

0:16:19 > 0:16:22pretty hacked off with certain people like Nikita and...

0:16:22 > 0:16:25Just gobbing off and not shutting up all the time.

0:16:25 > 0:16:27But then it got really good,

0:16:27 > 0:16:30cos Michael changed, and he improved it really well.

0:16:30 > 0:16:33I think he's an amazing motivator,

0:16:33 > 0:16:35because he just gets you to do things

0:16:35 > 0:16:38and if you slack off he is like, "You need to do it now!" OK!

0:16:38 > 0:16:41It made a difference and we actually got somewhere.

0:16:41 > 0:16:46Michael is capable, but also a little bit of a leader

0:16:46 > 0:16:49and they tend to look up to Michael.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52I said to them, just start fresh, and I think they listened

0:16:52 > 0:16:55and they tried hard not to get annoyed with me as well.

0:16:55 > 0:16:58So I think we worked really well together as a team

0:16:58 > 0:17:01to get here without having too many crashes.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04It's day 23 of the 35-day expedition,

0:17:04 > 0:17:08and some of the team are getting a bit homesick.

0:17:08 > 0:17:10I miss my sister so much. Like, oh my gosh.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13I really want to get home and see my friends, family,

0:17:13 > 0:17:18but I also want to be out here just every day doing something different.

0:17:18 > 0:17:19It's a weird situation.

0:17:21 > 0:17:23Polly has a surprise announcement.

0:17:23 > 0:17:27We are now three and a bit weeks into the expedition.

0:17:27 > 0:17:30We've actually been sent some messages from home.

0:17:31 > 0:17:33- Yeah?- Oh no!

0:17:34 > 0:17:36Why would you do that to me?

0:17:36 > 0:17:39The news meets with a mixed reaction.

0:17:39 > 0:17:43When you're missing someone, seeing them again makes you miss them more.

0:17:43 > 0:17:47# In the jungle, the mighty jungle! #

0:17:47 > 0:17:51Each has a video message from friends and family.

0:17:51 > 0:17:55It's brilliant you're on Serious Explorers, but you can't do this.

0:17:58 > 0:18:01- Who's that?- Is that your little sister? Wow!

0:18:01 > 0:18:05Hey Sammie, I'm enjoying playing Wii by myself with the two remotes.

0:18:05 > 0:18:08You're in the jungle - enjoy the snakes!

0:18:08 > 0:18:10I can't wait till you come back.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13Love you and I hope you're having a brilliant time. Bye.

0:18:15 > 0:18:18- They're all in my clothes! - LAUGHTER

0:18:18 > 0:18:22- FAMILY:- See you later! Love you!

0:18:22 > 0:18:25Oh, that's my horse!

0:18:25 > 0:18:28Boys are doing what they do best - eating!

0:18:28 > 0:18:29That's my farm.

0:18:29 > 0:18:33Hope you're enjoying yourself, not in too much trouble.

0:18:33 > 0:18:34Who is that?

0:18:34 > 0:18:37- Hi, Nikita! - Oh, my uncle and my auntie.

0:18:37 > 0:18:40- Hello Nikita.- Oh go away! That's my teacher!

0:18:43 > 0:18:47Don't you want to come home now? Look at it - it's beautiful.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50That's outside my grandma's house.

0:18:50 > 0:18:53How much are you missing Regan?

0:18:55 > 0:18:59I want one paw for a little bit, two paws for a lot.

0:18:59 > 0:19:01Where is that paw? Where's the other one?

0:19:01 > 0:19:05Oh yes, the little dog is missing you a lot.

0:19:05 > 0:19:07Unfortunately we had to bribe with...

0:19:12 > 0:19:16The explorers have now paddled 29 miles,

0:19:16 > 0:19:18but with just three days left,

0:19:18 > 0:19:19they've still got 46 to go.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24The new canoe teams are still working well together

0:19:24 > 0:19:27and spirits are high.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30# All the monkeys in the jungle! All the monkeys in the jungle! #

0:19:30 > 0:19:35Nikita's paddling hard, though her style is a little unusual.

0:19:35 > 0:19:37I don't care if she does a handstand and does it,

0:19:37 > 0:19:41as long as she goes fast, that is all I'm really bothered about.

0:19:41 > 0:19:45This is amazing, we're doing four miles an hour, which is phenomenal.

0:19:45 > 0:19:47I don't think they can continue this pace,

0:19:47 > 0:19:49so things will slow down,

0:19:49 > 0:19:52but it's a fantastic start. Can't ask for anything more.

0:19:52 > 0:19:56Unfortunately, Michael has a small problem.

0:19:56 > 0:19:59I really, really need a wee.

0:19:59 > 0:20:01Rather than hold up the team by pulling in,

0:20:01 > 0:20:03he tries to go from the boat.

0:20:03 > 0:20:05Michael, have you not been yet?

0:20:05 > 0:20:08No, I haven't even started.

0:20:08 > 0:20:10I can't even go!

0:20:12 > 0:20:13They're eating up the miles,

0:20:13 > 0:20:17but paddling for day after day, their bodies are close to the limit.

0:20:19 > 0:20:21It's been very tiring so far.

0:20:21 > 0:20:24But we're going at a really good pace.

0:20:24 > 0:20:27To be honest, I can't wait to get it over with.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30I just want to get out the boats and start a new thing.

0:20:30 > 0:20:35My bum absolutely kills, I just want to walk the rest of it.

0:20:36 > 0:20:40As they approach the end of day four, they clock up

0:20:40 > 0:20:44a total of 64 miles, leaving just 11 to go tomorrow.

0:20:44 > 0:20:47But one of the explorers won't be with them

0:20:47 > 0:20:50for the final stage of the journey.

0:20:50 > 0:20:55Instead they'll be going on a unique trip to observe a harpy eagle,

0:20:55 > 0:20:56becoming one of the few people ever

0:20:56 > 0:21:00to see the world's most powerful eagle in the wild.

0:21:00 > 0:21:04We have an amazing treat lined up for one of you.

0:21:04 > 0:21:09And that person is going to be...

0:21:09 > 0:21:11Megan!

0:21:12 > 0:21:16And the reason being is that you're the all-round star

0:21:16 > 0:21:19that just gets on with things, doesn't complain.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21So the treat that we've got for you

0:21:21 > 0:21:24starts off with a helicopter ride out of the jungle...

0:21:24 > 0:21:27Unbelievable!

0:21:27 > 0:21:30And this particular bird is about eight months old.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33So it's now standing about a metre tall.

0:21:33 > 0:21:35Chick! It's a chick, yeah?

0:21:35 > 0:21:39It's going to be amazing, I'm really looking forward to it now.

0:21:39 > 0:21:43I'm sorry all these lot have got to paddle down the river though!

0:21:43 > 0:21:46It's the final morning on the Burro-Burro River

0:21:46 > 0:21:49and Nikita is in charge of breaking camp.

0:21:52 > 0:21:56Where are you going? Help me with all these barrels.

0:21:56 > 0:21:59The team work hard under her command.

0:21:59 > 0:22:01- Oh! - Get all the rubbish off the floor

0:22:01 > 0:22:04and put it into that black bin bag.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11A lot of them have a few issues with her

0:22:11 > 0:22:14and they would be within their rights to refuse to work for her.

0:22:14 > 0:22:18But actually they've buckled round and worked really hard for her,

0:22:18 > 0:22:22- which has been brilliant. - She did a really, really good job

0:22:22 > 0:22:25and I actually think she quite likes taking command.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28Right, guys, let's get out of here.

0:22:28 > 0:22:30- Bye guys!- Bye, Megan!

0:22:32 > 0:22:33Bye Megan, have fun.

0:22:33 > 0:22:37The canoeists have half a day's hard paddle to complete 11 miles.

0:22:37 > 0:22:41While Megan heads to a clearing to wait for the helicopter.

0:22:41 > 0:22:45It's full of pale sulphur butterflies taking in moisture

0:22:45 > 0:22:47from the riverbank.

0:22:47 > 0:22:51But there's another, more deadly creature lurking nearby.

0:22:52 > 0:22:56I just spotted a 30-foot anaconda!

0:22:56 > 0:23:02It's a little bit scary, because that's a whole lot bigger than me!

0:23:02 > 0:23:06If it wanted, it could just, like, eat me for dinner.

0:23:06 > 0:23:10Anacondas are the world's largest, heaviest snake.

0:23:10 > 0:23:12There are tales of them eating humans,

0:23:12 > 0:23:14but in reality they're very shy.

0:23:16 > 0:23:17The local guides head closer.

0:23:17 > 0:23:20They're trying to catch it!

0:23:24 > 0:23:26But it's off like a shot.

0:23:28 > 0:23:30It's coming! I'm really excited!

0:23:34 > 0:23:39I'm going in a helicopter! It's my first time ever!

0:23:45 > 0:23:49Megan gets a birds-eye view of the unspoilt rainforest.

0:23:49 > 0:23:53They look like little broccoli trees, it's really funny.

0:23:55 > 0:24:00Back on the river, they're slowly closing in on their epic goal,

0:24:00 > 0:24:01but they're having to dig deep.

0:24:01 > 0:24:04For the past mile, we've been doing four miles an hour.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07And we've got seven miles to go.

0:24:07 > 0:24:11I was hoping it was a lot less than that.

0:24:11 > 0:24:13My shoulders are starting to burn a little bit.

0:24:13 > 0:24:18Suddenly, an unwelcome passenger climbs aboard one of the canoes.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21There's a tarantula there and..

0:24:21 > 0:24:24I don't want to sit on my seat just in case it, like, jumps.

0:24:24 > 0:24:26That is tiny.

0:24:26 > 0:24:28But it's disgusting!

0:24:28 > 0:24:33Come on, something that big, what you're 20 million times bigger than?

0:24:33 > 0:24:34You're scared of it?

0:24:34 > 0:24:36Regan comes to the rescue.

0:24:38 > 0:24:40I didn't kill it, it swims.

0:24:40 > 0:24:42You can see it, it's back there on the water.

0:24:44 > 0:24:47At the harpy eagle nesting site, Megan is in luck.

0:24:47 > 0:24:49The chick hasn't flown far away from the nest.

0:24:49 > 0:24:54It's really exciting, because I'm finally getting the harness on

0:24:54 > 0:24:57to go up and see the big birdie!

0:24:57 > 0:24:59It's a little bit frightening,

0:24:59 > 0:25:03because apparently I'm not far off prey size!

0:25:03 > 0:25:06She needs to climb 30 metres up into the rainforest canopy.

0:25:06 > 0:25:08Perfect!

0:25:10 > 0:25:12Wow, you're cruising!

0:25:12 > 0:25:15I'm just hanging in the air!

0:25:15 > 0:25:17I feel like I can fly!

0:25:19 > 0:25:21I'm coming to get you, birdie!

0:25:24 > 0:25:25This is really fun.

0:25:25 > 0:25:27Oh my God, look down there!

0:25:27 > 0:25:30Well done, Megan.

0:25:30 > 0:25:33And she fearlessly makes it all the way up.

0:25:33 > 0:25:36Very good. Stay there.

0:25:36 > 0:25:38She's massive!

0:25:38 > 0:25:42Before long, the chick will be preying on animals

0:25:42 > 0:25:43as big as howler monkeys.

0:25:43 > 0:25:45Cor, look at her feet!

0:25:46 > 0:25:50Her claws are like that long!

0:25:50 > 0:25:53The huge chick seems equally intrigued by Megan.

0:25:53 > 0:25:56She's looking at me now!

0:25:59 > 0:26:02She's checking me out for dinner!

0:26:03 > 0:26:05Hello!

0:26:05 > 0:26:07Hello!

0:26:10 > 0:26:12She's a really little baby.

0:26:12 > 0:26:16The adult must be absolutely huge.

0:26:16 > 0:26:20It's a magical and extremely rare encounter.

0:26:20 > 0:26:23That was absolutely amazing.

0:26:23 > 0:26:27I crossed my fingers last night that it would be here this morning.

0:26:27 > 0:26:30And he stayed there and I got to see him.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36On the river, the end is almost in sight,

0:26:36 > 0:26:40and they're making one final superhuman push.

0:26:41 > 0:26:43I'm enjoying it a lot. It is hard though.

0:26:43 > 0:26:47Because obviously something like this, you've got to work to get.

0:26:47 > 0:26:49And that's what we're doing.

0:26:50 > 0:26:54Over five days, they've paddled a phenomenal 75 miles.

0:26:56 > 0:26:59And at last they approach the end of the Burro-Burro river,

0:26:59 > 0:27:02where it joins the larger Sipuruni.

0:27:03 > 0:27:05What can we see?

0:27:05 > 0:27:09We have completed the Burro-Burro, yeah?

0:27:15 > 0:27:18Another record-breaking achievement for the young explorers.

0:27:21 > 0:27:22Ecstatic at the minute.

0:27:22 > 0:27:27So glad we've done it, completed our mission of getting here.

0:27:28 > 0:27:31That's a long, long way in anyone's book,

0:27:31 > 0:27:33let alone in one of these things.

0:27:33 > 0:27:37So really, really amazing effort on all their parts.

0:27:37 > 0:27:40There have been low parts during it and we have thought,

0:27:40 > 0:27:43"Why are we here in the pouring rain?"

0:27:43 > 0:27:46But this is just worth it, it's just incredible.

0:27:50 > 0:27:52Next time on Serious Explorers:

0:27:52 > 0:27:55the expedition reaches an awe-inspiring climax,

0:27:55 > 0:27:59trekking to the bottom of an immense waterfall.

0:27:59 > 0:28:01Can't get much better than this, really!

0:28:01 > 0:28:03And abseiling off the top.

0:28:03 > 0:28:07That is the best view in the whole world!
