0:00:02 > 0:00:05So far, I've taken pampered British kids to three different continents,

0:00:05 > 0:00:08seven countries, and 20 factories and farms,

0:00:08 > 0:00:13to show them the hard work that goes into making their favourite things.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16Now Show Me What You're Made Of is coming home.

0:00:16 > 0:00:20I want our five to see that hard work is also home-grown

0:00:20 > 0:00:23and that there are people all over the country putting in the hours

0:00:23 > 0:00:28to make the stuff that our kids rely on, and to keep the country running.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31Will our kids be shocked by the working world on their doorstep?

0:00:31 > 0:00:34It genuinely brought, like, a tear to my eye.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36How could someone do this just, like, over and over?

0:00:36 > 0:00:40- I hate cleaning.- If I'm going to be doing this for eight hours, I might have a heart attack.

0:00:40 > 0:00:44- Who takes the time to have a poo in a bus?- Disgusting.

0:00:44 > 0:00:45SHE SCREAMS

0:00:45 > 0:00:48I'm no longer a 13-year-old boy, I'm the boss!

0:00:48 > 0:00:50This is Show Me What You're Made Of UK.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58Our five kids are - Candyfloss Kazia...

0:00:58 > 0:01:01I don't ever think about where my stuff comes from, to be honest.

0:01:01 > 0:01:02..Boy In A Bubble Josh...

0:01:02 > 0:01:04I never do anything around the house

0:01:04 > 0:01:07because I don't really see anything that needs to be done.

0:01:07 > 0:01:08..Stylista Hansa...

0:01:08 > 0:01:10I do like being the centre of attention.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12I'm not going to lie.

0:01:12 > 0:01:13..Stubborn Safia...

0:01:13 > 0:01:16When I don't get my own way I tend to sulk and I'm quite

0:01:16 > 0:01:20melodramatic about the whole thing, I don't like not getting my own way.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22..and Bold And Brash Noah...

0:01:22 > 0:01:25I am a very self-confident guy.

0:01:29 > 0:01:33Today, we've travelled 300 miles to the East Midlands.

0:01:33 > 0:01:37To the vibrant and multicultural city of Leicester.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40Leicester used to be the centre

0:01:40 > 0:01:43of the UK's clothes-manufacturing industry.

0:01:43 > 0:01:46But all that started to change in the 1980s,

0:01:46 > 0:01:49when production went abroad to Asia, where it's cheaper.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53But now companies like Basic Premier are trying to revive

0:01:53 > 0:01:55clothes making in the UK.

0:01:55 > 0:02:00Now, in Britain, we love our clothes, spending nearly £44 billion

0:02:00 > 0:02:04a year on them. It takes a lot of graft to be able to keep up

0:02:04 > 0:02:08with such a demand and our five are about to find out just how much.

0:02:08 > 0:02:1290% of everything we wear is made abroad, but our kids are going

0:02:12 > 0:02:15to be working for a man who is trying to change that.

0:02:16 > 0:02:18OK, gang. Up you come.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23- I want you to meet your lovely new boss, Mick.- Hello.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26Hello, how do you do? Mick, I know you're trying to buck the trend here, aren't you?

0:02:26 > 0:02:29Yeah. We produce 35,000 to 40,000 garments a week here

0:02:29 > 0:02:31for the fashion industry.

0:02:31 > 0:02:32ALL GASP

0:02:32 > 0:02:34But to make that garment...

0:02:34 > 0:02:38we have to work very competitively to these oversees suppliers.

0:02:38 > 0:02:42We are all very hard-working and we are committed to the same cause.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45I didn't really realise that the clothes were more,

0:02:45 > 0:02:46like, stitched by people.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48I thought that, like, in this day and age,

0:02:48 > 0:02:51there'd be machines that would do all of that for them.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53Do you think you've got what it takes

0:02:53 > 0:02:57- to make the high street clothes? ALL:- Totes. Totally.

0:02:57 > 0:02:58LAUGHTER

0:02:58 > 0:03:01We're looking forward to having you for the next two days,

0:03:01 > 0:03:03be a part of our team down here.

0:03:03 > 0:03:07And you have to be dedicated to the same level as the staff down here.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10So, if you go into an environment like that,

0:03:10 > 0:03:14and aren't behaving in the same way, they're going to notice instantly.

0:03:14 > 0:03:16- Pressure.- Pressure's on.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22Basic Premier employs 80 workers

0:03:22 > 0:03:26and most of the jobs are done by hand. Speed and precision

0:03:26 > 0:03:29are vital, as there are very strict targets.

0:03:29 > 0:03:30The clothes made here

0:03:30 > 0:03:35are sold by several big high street names and the major supermarkets.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38- I've seen some things that I like. - Yeah!

0:03:38 > 0:03:40- Kazia, are you shopping? - Yeah, just shopping.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43Are you ready to go, are you ready to do your first task?

0:03:43 > 0:03:44- ALL:- Yeah.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48OK, guys, time to get down to business.

0:03:48 > 0:03:50So this is what you're going to be making for me today.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53'Mick is starting them on a job that he gives to all his trainees -

0:03:53 > 0:03:55'stitching the sides of bags.

0:03:55 > 0:03:59'All they have to do is sew three seams in a straight line

0:03:59 > 0:04:00'and edge the top.'

0:04:03 > 0:04:05This is Moni.

0:04:05 > 0:04:06- ALL:- Hello.

0:04:06 > 0:04:08She is our supervisor here,

0:04:08 > 0:04:11so she will show you how to operate the machines.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14The kids will have to do 30 bags in one hour.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16A machinist can make 80.

0:04:16 > 0:04:17That is so fast.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20'Sewing two squares of fabric together,

0:04:20 > 0:04:24'making bags, is the simplest job in the factory.'

0:04:24 > 0:04:26That is so cool.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28It looks hard but it's not too hard.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31If you go to countries in the Third World,

0:04:31 > 0:04:33there's kids about eight or seven years of age,

0:04:33 > 0:04:37sitting on machines like this and sewing away ten hours a day.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39Nice and quick at your stations.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42'If young children can do this, surely for our lot it will be

0:04:42 > 0:04:43'a walk in the park?'

0:04:43 > 0:04:48OK, guys, you know what is expected of you. The pressure's on.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51Three, two, one, get sewing.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56But things don't get off to a strong start.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00It's a lot harder than I thought.

0:05:00 > 0:05:04I thought it would be like textiles at school but it is really hard.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07And some seem to be finding it harder than others.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09Oh, it's all wonky!

0:05:09 > 0:05:11I don't know what to do.

0:05:11 > 0:05:13Oh, my God, the pressure. What... Like that?

0:05:13 > 0:05:16- Watch your finger. Oh-oh. - I can't do it.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20Kaz. What's gone on?

0:05:20 > 0:05:23- SOBBING:- I just can't do it. I can't do it.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25Talk to me, why are you getting upset?

0:05:25 > 0:05:28This one is all messed up. It's all wrong.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30Come and have a chat. Let me hear what you're saying.

0:05:30 > 0:05:34I can't do it. It keeps going wrong, and I can't do it!

0:05:34 > 0:05:36Oh, dear, Kazia's got herself in a bit of a muddle.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38So, Kaz, tell Mick what's gone wrong.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40It's just... I just can't do it. I'm just finding it really hard.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42That's fine, Kaz.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44Basically what it is, you can't be afraid of the machine.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46So, let's do it again.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48Lift the foot up, place it underneath there,

0:05:48 > 0:05:50That's it, nice and slowly, nice and slowly.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52That's it, that's it, carry on.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54Watch and just let it go through, that's it.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57And then carry on pressing it and then we'll cut the thread off.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59- That's definitely better. - There you go.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04But Kazia's not alone, Saf is also struggling.

0:06:04 > 0:06:08That's a major issue, so to prevent you doing this again,

0:06:08 > 0:06:11- what I'll do is, I'll put a little sign on your machine.- Oh.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13So that is a sign, "Seams not matching."

0:06:13 > 0:06:15As the quality control

0:06:15 > 0:06:18is walking around, they will pay you a bit more attention, actually.

0:06:18 > 0:06:21- Ohh.- OK. So, I'm just going to... - Can I get it taken off?

0:06:21 > 0:06:25Yeah, once your quality improves, yeah, we'll take it off, yeah.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28I can't believe you've got a sign and I haven't.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31- Mine's, like, ten times worse than yours.- I'm not happy.

0:06:31 > 0:06:33You look really flustered.

0:06:33 > 0:06:35Oh, don't tell me I'm red, don't say that.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38You're more of a salmon pink colour.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41We have had a lot of drama already within this task.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44There have been tears, there has been a sign put up,

0:06:44 > 0:06:47there's been complaints. But if you look around at the other workers,

0:06:47 > 0:06:51they are incredibly quiet and very, very disciplined.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55The kids have really got to up their game

0:06:55 > 0:06:57but things are going from bad to worse.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00There are signs of bad work everywhere.

0:07:00 > 0:07:04Quality control has said that you have got too many thread ends, so what I'm going to give you...

0:07:04 > 0:07:08- But no-one said that I had to cut them off.- ..is a second sign. - Can I have the blue one taken off?

0:07:08 > 0:07:11- Seams not matching, do you think we should take it off now?- Yep.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14- We're going to remove this sign now. - Yes!

0:07:14 > 0:07:17You can give it to Kaz, she's got all hers messed up.

0:07:17 > 0:07:19LAUGHTER

0:07:19 > 0:07:21You're so mean. You gave them that to me.

0:07:21 > 0:07:23That's bullying, that is.

0:07:25 > 0:07:28So, I'm not entirely sure what's gone on.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31I left and there was one sign, and I've come back

0:07:31 > 0:07:35and there are numerous signs all over everyone's stations, bar Noah.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38Noah hasn't put a foot wrong all morning.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41Do a fair amount and then it gets a bit easier after a while.

0:07:43 > 0:07:44I've got one left.

0:07:46 > 0:07:50Back home in London, 13-year-old Noah is used to being top dog.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53I am a very self-confident guy, you know.

0:07:53 > 0:07:57I do like to... I'm not really ashamed of anything.

0:07:57 > 0:08:01In fact, he's such a showman, he even has his own online channel.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04It says "Fiery, earthy and exhilarating".

0:08:04 > 0:08:06We're going to be testing that.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11BOTH SHRIEK

0:08:11 > 0:08:15Mum Sharon admits that his overconfidence isn't

0:08:15 > 0:08:16everyone's cup of tea.

0:08:16 > 0:08:21I think some of his teachers feel Noah is a bit big for his boots.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24Not very long ago, the teacher made a mistake and I sort

0:08:24 > 0:08:27of pointed it out. It's always quite fun to point mistakes out by a teacher because...

0:08:27 > 0:08:31You feel, like, "Oh, you know, I'm actually quite clever!"

0:08:31 > 0:08:33His mum's hoping this trip might soften him up.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35I'm not hoping Noah will change drastically,

0:08:35 > 0:08:37cos I love him the way he is,

0:08:37 > 0:08:41but I hope that he might be a little bit more considerate, perhaps a bit

0:08:41 > 0:08:46more compassionate, and a bit more thoughtful about other people.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49Back at the garment factory, that's about to be tested.

0:08:49 > 0:08:51OK, guys. Can I get your attention?

0:08:51 > 0:08:54Your boss has got something he would like to tell you.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58We're going to have to pull one of you off the line now.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01Not for a bad reason, for a good reason. Noah...

0:09:01 > 0:09:04- Surprise, surprise! - Oh, my God!

0:09:04 > 0:09:07- I'm promoting you.- Really?

0:09:07 > 0:09:09So, basically, what you're going to do now...

0:09:09 > 0:09:12You're going to become a supervisor/quality controller.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15Guys, Mick has just told Noah that he is now your supervisor.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17What?

0:09:17 > 0:09:18No way!

0:09:18 > 0:09:20LAUGHTER

0:09:20 > 0:09:23'Noah's promotion has not gone down well with all of the team.'

0:09:23 > 0:09:26Why is he so good at everything?

0:09:26 > 0:09:29Kazia, you're a bit gutted that you're going to have to listen to Noah.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32Yeah. He's going to be proper bossing me around.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35'And Mick has something to make sure they all take Noah seriously.'

0:09:35 > 0:09:37- IMITATES AMERICAN ACCENT: - I'm the boss.

0:09:37 > 0:09:41- I've got a piece of paper that says I'm the boss!- And he's quick to crack the whip.

0:09:41 > 0:09:42WHIP CRACKS

0:09:42 > 0:09:45Don't give me a sign. I'll hate you forever if you do.

0:09:45 > 0:09:48- You're too small, Noah. - That's just harsh.

0:09:48 > 0:09:52Yeah, you're too small - you can't put it up. That means I don't need it.

0:09:52 > 0:09:53That's cool beans. Done.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56- It's not cool beans. I don't like you any more.- It is cool.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59It's up to him, since he's my supervisor, I cannot argue.

0:09:59 > 0:10:01Cos that will just get...

0:10:01 > 0:10:04Oh, look, it's a sign, it's fallen down. I don't need it.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06I do not need it.

0:10:06 > 0:10:08He may have a big badge...

0:10:08 > 0:10:09Noah, I need your help...

0:10:09 > 0:10:13..but it takes more than that to control these girls.

0:10:13 > 0:10:15Just keep on, like, threading it through.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17I haven't done it like that. OK, thank you, boss.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20- Um, tell me how to do that, Noah. - Right, OK.

0:10:20 > 0:10:22- Noah?- What?

0:10:22 > 0:10:26- It's gone wrong. - Noah, I done it wrong!

0:10:26 > 0:10:29- Yeah, one at a time, ladies. - Noah!

0:10:31 > 0:10:33How is it supervising?

0:10:33 > 0:10:34Hard.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37It's just they're trying to be as awkward as possible to try

0:10:37 > 0:10:40and push me to the limits until eventually I break.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44'And they're not giving up.'

0:10:44 > 0:10:45Yo! Check out my cool hat.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52'Mick's not happy and decides to step in.'

0:10:52 > 0:10:56The two candidates that are being pretty offensive, I think.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59You know, in the workplace with putting hats on their heads...

0:10:59 > 0:11:02And you've got another fellow employee looking up,

0:11:02 > 0:11:04"Oops, I've chopped my finger off on the machine."

0:11:04 > 0:11:05This ain't on.

0:11:05 > 0:11:09You know, any behaviour like that, don't let them get away with it.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11- Yeah.- Do you feel confident enough to be able to do that?

0:11:11 > 0:11:14Er, yeah. I think so.

0:11:14 > 0:11:15THEY GIGGLE

0:11:15 > 0:11:18Hansa, they're made for bags, not for things that

0:11:18 > 0:11:20go on your head. So...

0:11:20 > 0:11:22I'm very sorry, boss.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25If you carry on doing that, I'd cut your wages.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27Really? Can you do that?

0:11:27 > 0:11:30Yeah. I got a piece of paper that says I can.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33'Mick's seen enough, and pulls everyone off the line.'

0:11:34 > 0:11:37Here they are, then. So you know why you're here.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40Mick, your boss, wants to have a quick chat with you.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43He caught up with his sheriff, and had a conversation with Noah,

0:11:43 > 0:11:45the supervisor. Still got your badge on, Noah?

0:11:45 > 0:11:48- Got the badge to prove it! - There it is.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50The boss with the badge.

0:11:50 > 0:11:55And he has decided that some of you will be promoted, yes?

0:11:55 > 0:11:57So, tomorrow, you'll come back and do a different job.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59And the rest will be demoted

0:11:59 > 0:12:02and perhaps do a job that is not quite as nice.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05We looked at the quality of the craftsmanship.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08We talked about that, and also about the behaviour.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11There's one thing that you never tolerate in the workplace...

0:12:11 > 0:12:14It is insubordination towards the authority.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16Towards your superior.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18And that's pretty serious, actually.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21'The two girls have really crossed the line.'

0:12:21 > 0:12:27It was decided that Hansa and Kaz - you are being demoted.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30- Ohh, again?- And you two have been promoted to the next...

0:12:30 > 0:12:33- Well done, guys.- Yay.- ..stage.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36After Noah got promoted, we kind of felt that he could be

0:12:36 > 0:12:41more lenient on us, so we could muck around a little bit more.

0:12:41 > 0:12:44Me and Hansa thought that because he was supervisor

0:12:44 > 0:12:48we could get away with a bit more, which obviously wasn't the case.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51And we just...were silly.

0:12:52 > 0:12:54When I arrived in Leicester this morning,

0:12:54 > 0:12:57I didn't really know what to expect. It has been a complete whirlwind.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00You know, we've had serious misbehaving, we've had tears,

0:13:00 > 0:13:02we've had management issues.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05What the five need to remember, ultimately, is this is a

0:13:05 > 0:13:09working environment and the people here rely heavily on their jobs.

0:13:10 > 0:13:14After Noah's problems at the factory today, I want him

0:13:14 > 0:13:17and the other promoted pair to meet someone who knows first-hand

0:13:17 > 0:13:20the difficulties of being in charge.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23Hello. Jump in, guys.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26'Anita lives with her daughters Anika and Manesha.'

0:13:26 > 0:13:30So. I don't know whether you guys recognise Anita.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32Anita works in the factory, she was on the shop floor.

0:13:32 > 0:13:37- Did I not see you walking through? - Yeah, I'm a quality controller.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40I heard somebody became a supervisor today.

0:13:40 > 0:13:41Yeah, that was me.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44- Was that you?- Yeah, I got a badge to prove it, as well!

0:13:44 > 0:13:46LAUGHTER

0:13:46 > 0:13:49- How did it feel to be a supervisor? - Hard. The worst is

0:13:49 > 0:13:52doing the telling off. I found that so hard.

0:13:52 > 0:13:56- I found it hard to actually be serious.- It's not easy

0:13:56 > 0:14:00telling an employee that... "You are doing this right..."

0:14:00 > 0:14:02You have to do it, because at the end of the day,

0:14:02 > 0:14:03every garment costs money

0:14:03 > 0:14:07and we've got to make sure that all the garments are perfect.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12Across town, Hansa and Kazia are also meeting a family who

0:14:12 > 0:14:16have nothing but respect for the work done at the factory.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19- Hey, there. Welcome. Come on in. - BOTH: Nice to meet you. - Nice to meet you, too.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22- I'm Kazia.- I'm Hansa.- My name is Amrit. So, guys, I would like you to meet my family.

0:14:22 > 0:14:24This is my brother, Dave.

0:14:24 > 0:14:26- Hello. Nice to meet you.- Hello.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29And this is my mum, she works at the factory.

0:14:29 > 0:14:30Hello, nice to meet you.

0:14:30 > 0:14:3315-year-old Amrit lives with his mum, Surjeet,

0:14:33 > 0:14:34and ten-year-old brother Dave.

0:14:34 > 0:14:38His dad works nights and his mum is a seamstress at the factory.

0:14:38 > 0:14:40So, today, we have been working at the factory where you work.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43Apparently, one of you put a bag on your head?

0:14:43 > 0:14:44- LAUGHTER - Yeah!

0:14:44 > 0:14:46What would happen to you if you were as noisy as us,

0:14:46 > 0:14:49and misbehaved like us?

0:14:49 > 0:14:50Yeah.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52And Amrit knows only too well

0:14:52 > 0:14:54how important his mum's job is to the family.

0:14:54 > 0:14:57In my opinion, she's like a soldier.

0:14:57 > 0:15:01She comes home, does the work, cooks sleeps, and that's it...

0:15:01 > 0:15:03It's the same thing every day and I can't be more proud of her.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06And...and... She's, like, my inspiration.

0:15:06 > 0:15:08With both his parents working long hours,

0:15:08 > 0:15:10it's up to Amrit to look after his brother.

0:15:10 > 0:15:14Cooking dinner for my brother, washing dishes properly,

0:15:14 > 0:15:16just stuff like that, just basic things like that.

0:15:16 > 0:15:19I don't do any vacuuming around the house.

0:15:19 > 0:15:20I just... My mum does it all.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25Back home in Surrey, Hansa rarely lifts a finger.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28I'd like to say that I do loads of chores

0:15:28 > 0:15:31but I don't really do many.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34Hansa has never had to work hard for anything.

0:15:34 > 0:15:37Her idea of hard work is baby-sitting,

0:15:37 > 0:15:40and sitting around eating crisps and playing on the iPad.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42I babysit the boys sometimes,

0:15:42 > 0:15:46because I generally get something out of it.

0:15:47 > 0:15:51And it's this attitude that her mum hopes will change.

0:15:51 > 0:15:55I think it'll do her a lot of good to go away and see what

0:15:55 > 0:15:59hard work goes into making the things that she loves.

0:15:59 > 0:16:01And so I would love for her to come back

0:16:01 > 0:16:03and contribute a little bit more.

0:16:03 > 0:16:06I kind of take my mum's presence for granted.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09Obviously, I love her, and it's amazing her being there,

0:16:09 > 0:16:11but I kind of just...

0:16:11 > 0:16:13I've never really known a life when she's not been there.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16What about you, Dave? Do you wish your mum was around the house more,

0:16:16 > 0:16:18to be with you and your brother?

0:16:18 > 0:16:21I am kind of sad how my mum isn't really there, but I'm glad

0:16:21 > 0:16:25that my brother's there cos he does pretty much everything for me.

0:16:25 > 0:16:27It's crazy how mature you are.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30- Yeah.- Like, compared to us.

0:16:30 > 0:16:33- Can't believe you are just 15.- Yeah.

0:16:33 > 0:16:34You're like an adult!

0:16:36 > 0:16:38I've so much respect for Amrit.

0:16:38 > 0:16:41Yeah, and normal fifteen year olds just care about themselves,

0:16:41 > 0:16:43but he's so selfless.

0:16:43 > 0:16:46Amrit's mum is so, like, caring, and the fact that she works

0:16:46 > 0:16:5060 hours a week, all for her sons, is unbelievable.

0:16:50 > 0:16:52Meeting her makes me feel really bad

0:16:52 > 0:16:55that I kind of took the job as a little bit of a joke.

0:16:55 > 0:16:57Maybe tomorrow things will change?

0:17:07 > 0:17:10So, it's the morning of day two here in the garment factory.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13Now, it's worth remembering that there was some serious playing up

0:17:13 > 0:17:16going on yesterday. Our five have promised me there's

0:17:16 > 0:17:19going to be none of that today. They now realise that the job must be

0:17:19 > 0:17:22taken seriously. But let's wait and see...

0:17:26 > 0:17:29And before they get down to business, it's time for a special celebration,

0:17:29 > 0:17:32it's the Hindu festival, Diwali.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35And Mick has laid on some treats to get the day off with a swing.

0:17:35 > 0:17:38Mick has put all this food on for the factory workers.

0:17:38 > 0:17:40Happy Diwali, everybody.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43- Happy Diwali.- And to you, too.

0:17:43 > 0:17:44Thank you.

0:17:45 > 0:17:47Oh, my God, it's so pretty.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49How long have you been working here for?

0:17:49 > 0:17:53- Three years.- Three years? Do you enjoy it here?

0:17:53 > 0:17:56I've been working for two hours, and I love it!

0:17:56 > 0:17:57LAUGHTER

0:17:57 > 0:18:00All of our kids are expected to match the work ethic

0:18:00 > 0:18:01of these machinists today.

0:18:01 > 0:18:05Let's hope demoted pair Kazia and Hansa can rise to that challenge.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13Uncle Gee is Hansa and Kazia's boss this morning.

0:18:13 > 0:18:15He runs the pressing and packing room,

0:18:15 > 0:18:18and he's got a spot of ironing in store for the girls.

0:18:18 > 0:18:20Under strict supervision,

0:18:20 > 0:18:22they'll be using these specially adapted irons,

0:18:22 > 0:18:25which have the right heat to press any type of garment in seconds.

0:18:25 > 0:18:28This pile will be yours. I've counted.

0:18:28 > 0:18:31- I have to do all of those? - This is 120.

0:18:31 > 0:18:32That's quite a lot.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35It's a lot, but you have to. Our chap does it.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38Sometimes they do 130, 140.

0:18:38 > 0:18:42The girls' target is 120 skirts each in just one hour.

0:18:45 > 0:18:47How many do you think you are going to get done?

0:18:47 > 0:18:48Not 120.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51No. I could not do 120.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54Too hot...already! I've only done, like, three.

0:18:54 > 0:18:55Are you sweating?

0:18:55 > 0:18:59Yeah, literally. I can just feel sweat.

0:19:01 > 0:19:02Shall we put our hair up?

0:19:02 > 0:19:04Yeah, I'm putting my hair up.

0:19:04 > 0:19:06- Does mine look all right, Kaz? - It is hot.

0:19:08 > 0:19:10Oh, mine's is really bad.

0:19:10 > 0:19:13The girls still don't seem to be taking this job seriously,

0:19:13 > 0:19:15despite the promises they made.

0:19:15 > 0:19:17Uncle Gee is not impressed.

0:19:17 > 0:19:20They are just, like, thinking that this is a game, you know,

0:19:20 > 0:19:23but actually it's not, it's real hard work.

0:19:23 > 0:19:28And you've got to get it out because everything depends on,

0:19:28 > 0:19:31you know, the order and deadlines, and things like that.

0:19:35 > 0:19:39Meanwhile, upstairs, Mick is putting Noah on the stitching line,

0:19:39 > 0:19:41making tops for a major supermarket.

0:19:41 > 0:19:44You're actually going to make a real product that is actually

0:19:44 > 0:19:46going to sell in the shops.

0:19:46 > 0:19:48This order is 11,000 units.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50So, if they pick up, say, two or three faults

0:19:50 > 0:19:52they'll send the whole thing back to us.

0:19:52 > 0:19:55So I'm relying on you to perform a really, you know...

0:19:55 > 0:19:57- Good job.- ..good task.- Yeah.

0:19:57 > 0:19:59No pressure, then!

0:19:59 > 0:20:01Scary. Scary stuff.

0:20:01 > 0:20:03Josh and Saf haven't quite made the grade,

0:20:03 > 0:20:06so they are finishing off yesterday's bags.

0:20:06 > 0:20:09So, you've overlocked them all up, and now we are attaching the straps.

0:20:09 > 0:20:11When you're ready, start.

0:20:11 > 0:20:13Whilst Josh and Saf get stuck straight in...

0:20:16 > 0:20:20..Noah's finding stitching sleeves much harder than yesterday's task.

0:20:23 > 0:20:25Noah...

0:20:25 > 0:20:27Can I just show you on the one that you just done?

0:20:27 > 0:20:30The reason that this will come back from the shops

0:20:30 > 0:20:32is because it's got a big hole in it. Yeah.

0:20:32 > 0:20:36I've just got to remind you that this is, like, a very important

0:20:36 > 0:20:38order to us.

0:20:38 > 0:20:42- Noah...- Oh!

0:20:43 > 0:20:46- I'll do that one again in just a second.- OK.

0:20:46 > 0:20:50I'm nervous. I genuinely do feel a bit under pressure.

0:20:50 > 0:20:54In fact, his work is so bad he's given his first sign.

0:20:54 > 0:20:58- It's a new sign, actually. We've never had this sign in the factory before.- Oh, right!

0:20:58 > 0:21:01Cos you've created a new fault that we've never had before,

0:21:01 > 0:21:03- holes in seams!- Yeah!

0:21:05 > 0:21:07Back at the steam press,

0:21:07 > 0:21:10Uncle Gee is still trying get the girls to iron the skirts properly.

0:21:10 > 0:21:12Not taking this seriously, are you?

0:21:12 > 0:21:15- We are.- No, you're not.

0:21:15 > 0:21:17You haven't done half of what you are supposed to have done.

0:21:17 > 0:21:19No. But we're trying our hardest.

0:21:20 > 0:21:23It is a bit annoying, him saying we're not doing our best,

0:21:23 > 0:21:26because we're not treating it like a game, it's hard work.

0:21:26 > 0:21:30Yeah, but we've just got to crack on and, like, do our best..

0:21:30 > 0:21:33And prove to Uncle that we are trying our best.

0:21:33 > 0:21:36Yeah, because we don't want him to think we're slacking.

0:21:36 > 0:21:38Nothing's impossible, though.

0:21:38 > 0:21:40With just a few minutes left to go,

0:21:40 > 0:21:43the girls finally give up the chat and get their heads down.

0:21:45 > 0:21:47So, are their skirts up to scratch?

0:21:47 > 0:21:48That was really tough,

0:21:48 > 0:21:51because you have to make sure there's no creases.

0:21:51 > 0:21:54It has to be perfect.

0:21:56 > 0:22:00But when Uncle Gee inspects their work, it's far from perfect.

0:22:00 > 0:22:02This is all no good.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07BOTH: Hi!

0:22:07 > 0:22:09I've been through your work...

0:22:09 > 0:22:11- Yeah.- ..and counted it.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16- You're supposed to be doing 120 an hour.- Yeah.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18You only did one third.

0:22:18 > 0:22:21Not only have they missed their target, but nearly half will

0:22:21 > 0:22:24have to be ironed again, because the seams aren't straight.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28It SEEMS they haven't learnt anything.

0:22:30 > 0:22:34Back on the production line, Noah is not the only one feeling the heat.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37If I make one, not obvious mistake to these guys,

0:22:37 > 0:22:40but obvious mistakes to the retailer, that's 11,000 garments

0:22:40 > 0:22:43that everyone here has worked really hard for.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46That's just... All that is just gone.

0:22:46 > 0:22:49So I'm trying to be as selfless as possible

0:22:49 > 0:22:53and make sure that these are genuinely the best things that I can produce.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58Whilst Noah returns to his high standards,

0:22:58 > 0:23:00Mick is back to check his progress.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07- That's it, that's the standard we need.- Yeah.

0:23:07 > 0:23:08That's a good standard there.

0:23:08 > 0:23:11The boss may be impressed with Noah,

0:23:11 > 0:23:13but when he hears about Kazia and Hansa's

0:23:13 > 0:23:17dismal ironing efforts, he decides to give them one last chance.

0:23:19 > 0:23:24They've been given one of the easiest jobs in the factory, folding skirts.

0:23:24 > 0:23:28You take the garment. Fold the side. Fold that side.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31Fold that halfway, like that. And then we bring this over.

0:23:33 > 0:23:35If the girls can't iron, let's hope they can fold,

0:23:35 > 0:23:39there are 5,000 skirts that need doing.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42And Mick's entrusting Noah to make sure they do it properly.

0:23:42 > 0:23:45- Noah is you're supervisor now. - Hi, Noah!- Hi, Noah!

0:23:45 > 0:23:47So, on good behaviour, yeah?

0:23:47 > 0:23:51- Yeah, yeah.- Noah is literally the golden boy today.

0:23:51 > 0:23:54- He's always the golden boy.- Yeah, he is, but we're not going to give him

0:23:54 > 0:23:56the excuse to tell us off and put the signs up.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58Is it all right if I have a little bit more space

0:23:58 > 0:24:01because I'm kind of going into Hansa.

0:24:01 > 0:24:04I'll just go find where 12s are.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07They know me now as like a supervisor sort of thing.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10I think now they're going to give me the respect that they

0:24:10 > 0:24:12would give any other supervisor.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15Excuse me, the size 12s...? Yep, there you go.

0:24:15 > 0:24:17And I've got a few more, if that's all right...?

0:24:17 > 0:24:19STACEY: Not only is it Noah's last chance to prove himself

0:24:19 > 0:24:23but it's also the girls', and Hansa's even spotting mistakes.

0:24:23 > 0:24:26This skirt, I don't think it'll pass quality control.

0:24:26 > 0:24:29- Cos, look...- It's got a hole!

0:24:29 > 0:24:30Exactly.

0:24:30 > 0:24:32Noah immediately reports the fault

0:24:32 > 0:24:36- That's a good spot. - It's a good spot by Hansa.

0:24:36 > 0:24:39That's really good quality control, there, Hansa. Excellent. Well done.

0:24:39 > 0:24:42Mick's pleased with the girls' turnaround,

0:24:42 > 0:24:45and it seems that Noah's also proved he's got what it takes.

0:24:45 > 0:24:47So, everything is fine and it's OK

0:24:47 > 0:24:49and we will get 5,000 done by end of today?

0:24:49 > 0:24:52- Yeah. Hopefully.- That's good.

0:24:52 > 0:24:54With the skirts packed...

0:24:58 > 0:24:59..it's time for the boardroom.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04OK. Hello, guys.

0:25:04 > 0:25:06ALL: Hi.

0:25:06 > 0:25:08Welcome to the boardroom.

0:25:08 > 0:25:11Mick, if you could remind us a bit about your factory

0:25:11 > 0:25:14and why it's so important for you to still be here.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16Why it's so important as a business to buy British clothing...

0:25:16 > 0:25:19Cos it's not just about profits, et cetera, it's not about that.

0:25:19 > 0:25:22It's actually working as a whole group.

0:25:22 > 0:25:25We're thinking about the workers, we're trying to pay them

0:25:25 > 0:25:27the best we can. We want to generate a business that can

0:25:27 > 0:25:29generate a community, in a way.

0:25:29 > 0:25:32You know Mick has been watching you for the past couple of days.

0:25:32 > 0:25:34He has had conversations with his supervisors,

0:25:34 > 0:25:37and we're going to tell you what he thinks.

0:25:37 > 0:25:39So, let's start with Noah...

0:25:39 > 0:25:42He was very, very good.

0:25:42 > 0:25:45I had a few of the workers actually approach me

0:25:45 > 0:25:48and say, "He is a pretty good machinist, there."

0:25:48 > 0:25:52The other four, you are actually not ready at the moment.

0:25:52 > 0:25:54No, the four of you in particular, you know, there were

0:25:54 > 0:25:58points on that factory floor where you just weren't getting it.

0:25:58 > 0:26:02Every time I looked over, you know, particularly the two girls...

0:26:02 > 0:26:04It was like you were in the playground

0:26:04 > 0:26:06- Noah!- Noah!

0:26:07 > 0:26:09Yo! Check out my cool hat!

0:26:10 > 0:26:13And I look around and you've got the bag on your head.

0:26:13 > 0:26:15It is just not cool.

0:26:15 > 0:26:19If I had my way, I would have given you a proper verbal warning.

0:26:19 > 0:26:22Called you in the office, sat you down. And it would have been up on your records, as well.

0:26:22 > 0:26:25Do you think you two are a bit of a nightmare together?

0:26:25 > 0:26:27- I would say so! - LAUGHTER

0:26:27 > 0:26:31- Yeah, we just kind of clicked. We've got similar personalities. - Definitely.

0:26:31 > 0:26:33- I think we just got on quite well. - Yeah.

0:26:33 > 0:26:37Good thing outside of the workplace, but not so good inside the workplace.

0:26:37 > 0:26:39- Not inside.- Yeah.

0:26:39 > 0:26:44So with all of that said, Mick has told me that he would be

0:26:44 > 0:26:47offering jobs, if you were old enough.

0:26:48 > 0:26:52Mick, if you could tell us your decision...

0:26:52 > 0:26:54I'm going to offer a job to Noah.

0:26:54 > 0:26:58He treated the task in hand with 100% respect,

0:26:58 > 0:27:00and I think he has got the right attitude at this stage,

0:27:00 > 0:27:06to actually come into our business and, you know, give us credit.

0:27:06 > 0:27:09That means the four of you wouldn't have been offered a job.

0:27:09 > 0:27:11How does that make you feel?

0:27:11 > 0:27:13Do you think that it's fair - do you agree?

0:27:13 > 0:27:15Yeah, I wouldn't hire me.

0:27:15 > 0:27:17LAUGHTER

0:27:17 > 0:27:19Noah is the star of the show again.

0:27:19 > 0:27:22But, you know, we have still got three factories to go, guys.
