0:01:28 > 0:01:30The decision is...

0:01:30 > 0:01:33Who will be Taking The Next Step?

0:01:43 > 0:01:44Welcome to Day One of Nationals!

0:01:44 > 0:01:47CONTESTANTS CHEER

0:01:47 > 0:01:51Dancers, a huge congratulations on making it this far. I think

0:01:51 > 0:01:56it's time to welcome in our three judges. Kimberly, John, and Simeon!

0:01:59 > 0:02:00Hello! How you doing?

0:02:00 > 0:02:03Hello! Hi! Yes!

0:02:03 > 0:02:06Go, go, go, go!

0:02:09 > 0:02:13Kimberly, the pressure is on today, isn't it? So what have the dancers

0:02:13 > 0:02:16- got to do to get through?- We're in Nationals now, which means

0:02:16 > 0:02:19they have got to pull it out the bag. We need to see them at

0:02:19 > 0:02:22their best. How they work together, how they take on a task and

0:02:22 > 0:02:26ultimately, how they perform it. So, you've just got to do it.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28- You got to go for it. - LAUGHTER

0:02:28 > 0:02:30It's going to be tough, isn't it? John, what are you looking for?

0:02:30 > 0:02:35I'm looking for performance, character, personality and charisma.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38Simeon, these dancers have got to prove that they've got

0:02:38 > 0:02:42- what it takes.- Yeah.- So what's their first challenge?- First challenge

0:02:42 > 0:02:45for you guys, you'll learn a piece of choreography from myself.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47OK. CONTESTANTS CHEER

0:02:47 > 0:02:49Yeah, come on! Hup!

0:02:51 > 0:02:54POP MUSIC PLAYS

0:02:54 > 0:02:56Woo!

0:03:02 > 0:03:04THEY CHEER

0:03:06 > 0:03:09So you guys will take all these steps, and we'll adjust them.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12So you're going to put your own style, your own flavour.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14- Are you ready? - CONTESTANTS: Yeah!

0:03:14 > 0:03:17Find a way that you can stand out. For me, in

0:03:17 > 0:03:20the Pussycat Dolls, I had my signature move, the Standing

0:03:20 > 0:03:23Leg Tilt, that separated me from the rest of the girls.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26- What is it about you that makes YOU stand out?- You ready?

0:03:26 > 0:03:28- CONTESTANTS: Yeah!- Good luck!

0:03:28 > 0:03:30It's the first of two challenges

0:03:30 > 0:03:34- today and the first cut will be from 53 to 30.- Get out of here!

0:03:34 > 0:03:39At Regionals, everyone had a chance to prepare their own audition

0:03:39 > 0:03:42routines, but now the choreography is being set for them.

0:03:42 > 0:03:46Boom, boom, boom! Five and six. Go back, let's go.

0:03:46 > 0:03:50Simeon is taking the dancers through the steps in groups.

0:03:50 > 0:03:55And they have just ten minutes to memorise his choreography.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58Two, three and four. Now, the hand doesn't need to be a click.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01You might want to do something more exotic. One, two, three and four.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04Play around with it, yeah? When we do this turn to the side

0:04:04 > 0:04:07you can make it anything you want. So I can be here, I can go up,

0:04:07 > 0:04:10and down. As long as we finish on exactly the same timing,

0:04:10 > 0:04:13I don't mind what you do. Cool? That's all I want.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16CONTESTANTS: One, two, three, and four...

0:04:16 > 0:04:19'Whether they dance ballet, tap, contemporary or street,

0:04:19 > 0:04:22'everyone is expected to put their own stamp on the routine.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27'And everybody must deliver a signature move.'

0:04:27 > 0:04:30Seeing some style come out. Some individuality.

0:04:30 > 0:04:34There really is nowhere to hide at Nationals, and the dancers

0:04:34 > 0:04:38are rehearsing outside under the watchful eye of Kimberly and John.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43- What are you looking for?- We're looking for technique, we're

0:04:43 > 0:04:46looking for character, we're also looking for team playing and

0:04:46 > 0:04:48- we're not seeing too much of that right now.- Really?

0:04:50 > 0:04:53Adapting the steps isn't coming easy to everyone.

0:04:54 > 0:04:58- Alex is struggling a bit. I kind of saw that coming.- Yeah.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01- He's tap, isn't he? - He is tap, yeah.

0:05:03 > 0:05:07The new routine may be proving tricky for 13-year-old Alex,

0:05:07 > 0:05:11but it was a different story when he first auditioned in London.

0:05:11 > 0:05:13Choreographically, I'm very rhythmical, especially when

0:05:13 > 0:05:18there's music involved and you were like getting down. I like when I

0:05:18 > 0:05:21see dancers sit on tracks, no matter what style it is. A lot of the

0:05:21 > 0:05:24time, I wasn't even watching you, I was listening. Are you, not just

0:05:24 > 0:05:26in time, but how are you playing around with the music?

0:05:26 > 0:05:29Then when I saw you, I was like, "OK, I'm looking at this cool cat,

0:05:29 > 0:05:32"you're sitting, you're performing, you're dada dada dada ba ba!"

0:05:32 > 0:05:34- So, yeah, well. Well done. - Thank you.

0:05:36 > 0:05:40It's time for tapper Alex and his group to face the judges. Can he put

0:05:40 > 0:05:43his own spin on Simeon's routine?

0:05:43 > 0:05:47Five, six, five, six, seven and...

0:05:47 > 0:05:51POP MUSIC PLAYS

0:05:57 > 0:06:02I feel it went a bit bad because I mucked up and I went too early.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08I think I did put it back on track, but I don't really know.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11Tap dancer Alex and his group have

0:06:11 > 0:06:14had their chance in front of the judges.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17And, a nonstop stream of auditions follows.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21- How was that?- Good.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25High-fives! Well done, guys! Well done!

0:06:26 > 0:06:3053 dancers are battling for just 30 places in the next round.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33On a scale of one to ten, how do we think it went?

0:06:35 > 0:06:39- Ten.- While some dancers are brimming with confidence, others are

0:06:39 > 0:06:42finding the new choreography a challenge. How was that?

0:06:42 > 0:06:46- Ah, nerve-racking. - Nerve-racking? I bet.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49And the judges are watching their every move.

0:06:50 > 0:06:54- You look in shock.- Ah.- How was it, Tallulah?- It was just like...

0:06:54 > 0:06:57You're all a bit out of breath, aren't you?

0:06:57 > 0:06:59The auditions have been relentless.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01Stand up!

0:07:01 > 0:07:05All our dancers today have their sights set on the ultimate goal -

0:07:05 > 0:07:07that guest role on The Next Step.

0:07:08 > 0:07:12And everyone is hoping to stand out with their signature move.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15I think the thing about making a signature move is just that,

0:07:15 > 0:07:19it's like, it's your plug, you know? It's... When you get out on

0:07:19 > 0:07:22stage, you plug it quick, and the audience goes wild, you know?

0:07:22 > 0:07:26And I think that comes from who you are as a person.

0:07:26 > 0:07:30What inspires you? Is it jumps and turns, or is it something artistic

0:07:30 > 0:07:35- that's cool and that's smoother? - Hmm. Thanks, Eldon. I'm sure I

0:07:35 > 0:07:36can have a crack at this.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40What do you think? Terrible.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44Erm, back to our dancers and their signature moves.

0:07:44 > 0:07:46We've had Leg Lifts...

0:07:46 > 0:07:47Well done.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50We've seen some leaps.

0:07:53 > 0:07:54Thank you.

0:07:56 > 0:08:00And we've had some that are, shall we say, unique.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08Hoping to stand out in her group for all the right reasons, it's

0:08:08 > 0:08:1011-year-old street dancer, Hollie.

0:08:18 > 0:08:20I can't believe you came out here so nervous when you can dance

0:08:20 > 0:08:24like that. You need to believe in yourself! I want confidence!

0:08:24 > 0:08:26And I mean it, because you're good!

0:08:26 > 0:08:28Thank you.

0:08:28 > 0:08:32- Can Hollie prove to Kim she was right to believe in her?- Hello.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34CONTESTANTS: Hello.

0:08:34 > 0:08:38So this is it, Nationals. It's your time to shine.

0:08:38 > 0:08:42Take the floor. Space yourselves out. Simeon's going to count you in.

0:08:42 > 0:08:46Five, six, five, six, seven and...

0:09:03 > 0:09:04Thank you very much, guys.

0:09:07 > 0:09:11- How did that go?- Yeah, it was really good.- Really good? You seem

0:09:11 > 0:09:14- really positive.- Yeah. - Any smiles from the judges?

0:09:14 > 0:09:16- Could you tell?- Yeah!- Really?

0:09:16 > 0:09:18I don't think it went how I

0:09:18 > 0:09:20planned, but hopefully,

0:09:20 > 0:09:23you never know, fingers crossed.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26While Hollie and the other dancers take a well earned break, the

0:09:26 > 0:09:31judges must decide who stays and who goes. The judges are

0:09:31 > 0:09:35deliberating just behind me. They have the task of choosing 30

0:09:35 > 0:09:38to take the next step. There's going to be some tough decisions

0:09:38 > 0:09:42and we will have to say goodbye to 23 dancers.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45I would not want to be in their shoes right now.

0:09:45 > 0:09:48Now that was a strong yes from me, because I really felt that she

0:09:48 > 0:09:51pulled it out the bag. She gave me energy. One of the only ones

0:09:51 > 0:09:52that really performed.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57With such a big cut coming, this could be bad news for some of

0:09:57 > 0:10:00the friendships that have formed since Regionals.

0:10:02 > 0:10:06Esha and Erin bonded at their first audition in London when they had to

0:10:06 > 0:10:09- perform together in a call-back at the end of the day.- So we've

0:10:09 > 0:10:12decided to take both of you through to Nationals!

0:10:14 > 0:10:17Now were you in different groups when you went into your challenge?

0:10:17 > 0:10:20- Yes.- Yes.- So you don't know how each other have done.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23- No.- And what would happen today if one of you went through and

0:10:23 > 0:10:25- one of you didn't?- Ohhhh!

0:10:25 > 0:10:27You had to bring that up, didn't you?

0:10:27 > 0:10:30Yeah, sorry! It is the awkward truth. It might happen,

0:10:30 > 0:10:32you'd never know! How would you feel?

0:10:32 > 0:10:36- I'd be happy.- Happy for her. - But I would be upset as well.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39You guys are so supportive of each other. It's really nice.

0:10:39 > 0:10:43The mood backstage is upbeat. But 23 dancers will be going home.

0:10:45 > 0:10:49Back in the audition room, Kimberly, John and Simeon, have been

0:10:49 > 0:10:51locked in serious discussion.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55I wanted him to come and smash it, but he was struggling.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57That is a definite yes from me.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00I haven't fought for many, but this is one I will fight for.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03- Signature move was good though.- I don't even remember what it was.

0:11:03 > 0:11:05- I kind of just don't want to give up on him.- As soon as it

0:11:05 > 0:11:08came time to perform, turned it on.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10- Yeah?- We happy? We agreed?- Yeah.

0:11:10 > 0:11:12The 30 have been chosen.

0:11:15 > 0:11:19The dancers have been placed in groups to hear either a yes

0:11:19 > 0:11:24or a no from the judges. Erin and Esha are in different groups,

0:11:24 > 0:11:27but, will both dancers survive the cuts?

0:11:28 > 0:11:32All of you have amazing qualities as dancers, and we have felt so

0:11:32 > 0:11:35- inspired by you.- There are positives and there are

0:11:35 > 0:11:37negatives with all of you.

0:11:37 > 0:11:41But we've needed to deliberate to find out whether or not

0:11:41 > 0:11:44you're through to the next round.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46We have reached a decision.

0:11:53 > 0:11:58We've decided that you will be going through to the next round!

0:11:58 > 0:11:59Congratulations!

0:11:59 > 0:12:01THEY CHEER

0:12:01 > 0:12:03So, it's great news for Erin!

0:12:03 > 0:12:07- Bet you guys are just feeling ecstatic, aren't you?- Yeah.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10Well, guess what? Challenge Two next!

0:12:10 > 0:12:12CONTESTANTS: Ohhhh!

0:12:12 > 0:12:15But, will Esha be joining her?

0:12:19 > 0:12:22You will not be going through to the next round. I'm sorry.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25You should be really proud of yourselves. Do you feel all right?

0:12:25 > 0:12:28- Yeah.- You feel good? Feel proud?- Yep.

0:12:28 > 0:12:32So it's the end of Esha's Next Step journey and she's not the only one.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38Unfortunately this time you will not be Taking The Next Step.

0:12:41 > 0:12:45It's been an amazing opportunity and I'm glad that I got this far.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47- You going to keep dancing? - Definitely.- Do you need a fourth

0:12:47 > 0:12:52- dancer in your crew?- Yes.- Yeah... - That was a "no," Roan, wasn't it?

0:12:52 > 0:12:53No...

0:12:56 > 0:12:59But for others, it's the result they've been desperate to hear.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04You will be going through to the next round. All of you.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10It's only going to get harder for you because you are through

0:13:10 > 0:13:12to the next round!

0:13:12 > 0:13:14THEY CHEER

0:13:16 > 0:13:19And that is Challenge One done, who's up for Challenge Two?

0:13:19 > 0:13:21CONTESTANTS: ME!

0:13:21 > 0:13:24Me too! Off you go, tell your family, get ready, OK?

0:13:24 > 0:13:28There's plenty to celebrate backstage as 25 dancers have

0:13:28 > 0:13:31earned their places in the second round of Nationals.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37But with just five places left, there can only be good news

0:13:37 > 0:13:42for one of our final two groups. Who has done enough to make it through?

0:13:42 > 0:13:44Hollie or Alex?

0:13:47 > 0:13:48Hello.

0:13:50 > 0:13:54I just want to say congratulations on getting this far.

0:13:54 > 0:13:57The stakes have been incredibly high.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00Do we see potential in you? Yes.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04But we're actually looking for somebody to be a star.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08Do you have that star potential?

0:14:09 > 0:14:11So, after much deliberation,

0:14:11 > 0:14:14we have come to a decision.

0:14:17 > 0:14:19And our decision is...

0:14:20 > 0:14:23..that we will not be able to take any of you to the next round.

0:14:28 > 0:14:30I'm a bit disappointed I didn't get through,

0:14:30 > 0:14:32but I'm all right in the end.

0:14:32 > 0:14:33Cos it's all about the experience, isn't it?

0:14:34 > 0:14:37I have to tell you that it's only going to get harder,

0:14:37 > 0:14:39because you are through to the next round!

0:14:39 > 0:14:40CHEERING

0:14:42 > 0:14:44APPLAUSE

0:14:44 > 0:14:46I'm in a lot of shock right now,

0:14:46 > 0:14:48and I'm really excited and really happy.

0:14:51 > 0:14:55Tears of joy for Hollie. But it's the end of the road for Alex.

0:14:57 > 0:15:00So, our 30 remaining dancers are edging closer

0:15:00 > 0:15:02to that guest role on The Next Step.

0:15:02 > 0:15:07Can Hollie and Erin make it through to Nationals, Day Two?

0:15:07 > 0:15:11All right, we're onto our next challenge. And this is a tough one.

0:15:11 > 0:15:13We are going to break you into dance troupes,

0:15:13 > 0:15:15and in your dance troupe,

0:15:15 > 0:15:20it's up to you to create and choreograph a performance.

0:15:20 > 0:15:24I always say you're only as good as your weakest link.

0:15:24 > 0:15:27You all want to be able to shine in this piece.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30Of course you'll be judged as individuals,

0:15:30 > 0:15:34but if the group is good, then the individuals will shine.

0:15:34 > 0:15:36So, we want you to work as a team.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39But also, you're all fighting for that number one spot.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43The stakes are high. Don't blow it.

0:15:43 > 0:15:47- Let's do this! - Yeah, come on! Come on!

0:15:50 > 0:15:54Our 30 dancers will be working in troupes of five, and they

0:15:54 > 0:15:57have to come up with a routine to The Next Step track Coming Home.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59# I'm coming home. #

0:16:01 > 0:16:02When I'm dancing in a group on The Next Step,

0:16:02 > 0:16:05I feel very connected to them, and I feel like that's very important.

0:16:05 > 0:16:09# I'm coming home Coming home, coming home. #

0:16:09 > 0:16:10I think it's amazing when we mix

0:16:10 > 0:16:12everyone's different styles together,

0:16:27 > 0:16:31Each troupe has just 15 minutes to come up with a routine, and all

0:16:31 > 0:16:35three judges will be watching as they develop their ideas.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50The other dancers' styles share similar moves,

0:16:50 > 0:16:53so how will Hollie blend with her troupe?

0:16:58 > 0:16:59So you roll like this...

0:17:06 > 0:17:08Rehearsals are over.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11It's time for Hollie and the rest of the troupe to bring

0:17:11 > 0:17:13their routine together for the big performance.
