0:00:17 > 0:00:20Most of us aren't going to get very far staring at a

0:00:20 > 0:00:22blank screen or an empty page.

0:00:24 > 0:00:29But ideas, inspiration, can come from sounds around us.

0:00:29 > 0:00:35Memories, stories, poems, photos...or a picture,

0:00:35 > 0:00:37like the image of a dark, turbulent wave.

0:00:38 > 0:00:42That's what composer Anna Clyne saw in her head back in 2012

0:00:42 > 0:00:45and the first thing that she did was to paint it,

0:00:45 > 0:00:49then she went over to her piano and started to improvise.

0:00:50 > 0:00:54Notes, melodies, rhythms, any music that the image made her think of.

0:00:54 > 0:00:58To do this, you don't need to know how to read or write music,

0:00:58 > 0:01:00you just need to want to make it.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03Anna's music grew, the images grew,

0:01:03 > 0:01:08both took on a life of their own and soon a Night Ferry emerged.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11INTENSE MUSIC PLAYS

0:01:17 > 0:01:21- ETHEREAL VOICE:- The ice was here, the ice was there,

0:01:21 > 0:01:23the ice was all around.

0:01:23 > 0:01:27..scratched in pencil or thick paint, and lines from poems

0:01:27 > 0:01:31like The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and the tale of his cursed ship.

0:01:31 > 0:01:37It cracked and growled, and roared and howled, like noises in a swound!

0:01:37 > 0:01:41You know, our minds are mysterious places,

0:01:41 > 0:01:45where our moods can suddenly turn from light and clear to dark

0:01:45 > 0:01:48and stormy, and that's what Night Ferry is -

0:01:48 > 0:01:51the journey of a ship struggling through the night,

0:01:51 > 0:01:56but also a journey through the whirlwind of our own minds.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59And that whole musical voyage started in Anna's mind with

0:01:59 > 0:02:01one single idea.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03One image, one wave.
