0:03:02 > 0:03:07Chloe was so nervous, she couldn't even look at her audience.

0:03:16 > 0:03:21# Whe-e-e-ere is love

0:03:22 > 0:03:27# Does it fall from skies above... #

0:03:34 > 0:03:36'At first, I despaired.'

0:03:36 > 0:03:41They were so underconfident. I questioned if they'd get there.

0:03:41 > 0:03:46As the big performance got closer, audiences grew bigger and bigger

0:03:46 > 0:03:51and each week a different singer was under the solo spotlight.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55In Week Two, the bus pulled up in Bournemouth

0:03:55 > 0:04:01to sing for a proper audience - Gareth's old school choir.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04Twin sisters Katie and Annabel were picked first

0:04:04 > 0:04:06to try out for the solo spot.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09'I really didn't want to sing.'

0:04:09 > 0:04:12"Oh, my goodness! I'm so bad!"

0:04:12 > 0:04:14# The whole world's coming together now... #

0:04:14 > 0:04:19- Why do you keep looking at me? - Cos it's not all right.- Why?

0:04:19 > 0:04:23- Cos.- Why? Cos why? - 'I have always had problems'

0:04:23 > 0:04:29with being underconfident. People say, "Katie, you're so shy."

0:04:29 > 0:04:34The extent of the nerves was unlike anything I've ever seen.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38They were so frightened and timid. I had to get them singing.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41More energy! Throw the chair!

0:04:41 > 0:04:44# Coming together now... # Yeah!

0:04:44 > 0:04:47- THEY SING - Yeah!

0:04:47 > 0:04:50'I think the fact that Gareth'

0:04:50 > 0:04:53made me go all loopy

0:04:53 > 0:04:57'and just playing around and being all crazy,'

0:04:57 > 0:05:00that brought my confidence up.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02- Can you go, "Yeah!"?- Yeah!

0:05:02 > 0:05:05Oh, my gosh! We've found it!

0:05:05 > 0:05:09But when Gareth took them to train with a professional soul choir,

0:05:09 > 0:05:12it was a different story for Katie.

0:05:12 > 0:05:17# Higher and higher! # 'When I saw the choir,'

0:05:17 > 0:05:21I thought I could never sing on stage with that much confidence.

0:05:21 > 0:05:26So when it was Katie's turn to perform her solo,

0:05:26 > 0:05:30- things didn't go to plan. - Give it your best shot.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33SHE BARELY WHISPERS

0:05:36 > 0:05:38Ohhh.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40Hey, hey, I don't want you to cry.

0:05:40 > 0:05:44I'd like to be able to sing in front of people without getting upset,

0:05:44 > 0:05:47but I don't think I can.

0:05:47 > 0:05:51She fell apart completely and I was really worried for her.

0:05:51 > 0:05:55I didn't think she'd get back from that.

0:05:55 > 0:06:01By Week Three, nerves were still getting the better of the 10.

0:06:01 > 0:06:06So when Chloe stepped up to the show tune solo,

0:06:06 > 0:06:08before long disaster struck.

0:06:08 > 0:06:13# Said the Tin Man... # Oh, I can't do it.

0:06:13 > 0:06:18She crumbled into dust. I thought she would not come back.

0:06:18 > 0:06:20What's the matter?

0:06:20 > 0:06:23I don't want to do it.

0:06:23 > 0:06:27It was going through my mind that I'd ruined it for everybody

0:06:27 > 0:06:30and that they won't like me.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33- I'm scared.- I know you're scared.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36You've got to face your fears.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39'I hadn't realised how much pressure she felt.'

0:06:39 > 0:06:44Somehow she found the confidence to come back and sing.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46# Said the Tin Man... #

0:06:46 > 0:06:51My confidence really started to grow when I finished my performance.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54I just thought, "I can do it.

0:06:54 > 0:06:58"I can do it for everything." I was proud of myself.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01Well done!

0:07:02 > 0:07:08Each week Gareth set his chosen soloist a test of nerves

0:07:08 > 0:07:12in front of their scariest audience imaginable.

0:07:12 > 0:07:17Chris forgot his words singing to his two sisters and their friends.

0:07:17 > 0:07:19# You're...

0:07:19 > 0:07:22# ..for... #

0:07:22 > 0:07:27- Aah!- And Emily was completely thrown when she sang

0:07:27 > 0:07:30to her mates from majorettes.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32Oh. My. Goodness.

0:07:32 > 0:07:36I was nearly crying because I was terrified.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40In Week Five, it was Howard's turn.

0:07:40 > 0:07:45A cafe full of strangers awaited, as well as his mum.

0:07:45 > 0:07:51My scariest moment was singing my solo challenge. I didn't like it.

0:07:51 > 0:07:55My mum was in the cafe. I didn't know she'd be there.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58I've never heard Howard sing in front of me.

0:07:58 > 0:08:02It's going to be quite hard for him.

0:08:02 > 0:08:07- Hello.- When Howard first auditioned for Gareth, it was clear

0:08:07 > 0:08:11- that singing had a huge impact on him.- I don't get a tic when I sing.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14- You suffer from Tourette's.- Yes.

0:08:16 > 0:08:20Tourette's causes Howard to move or tic uncontrollably.

0:08:20 > 0:08:25When I'm singing, I don't get a single tic. But I go bright red.

0:08:25 > 0:08:29- Really?- That's why I get nervous and try to run offstage.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31- Is that frustrating?- Very.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35His solo test was more frightening than anyone else's.

0:08:35 > 0:08:40They didn't know he had Tourette's. It was a scary thing to do.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43# We can fight our desires

0:08:46 > 0:08:53# But when we... # 'At first I thought my tics would hold me back.'

0:08:53 > 0:08:58But when I started singing a lot more, they couldn't hold me back.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01# I'm doing it for a thrill

0:09:01 > 0:09:05# Oh, I'm hoping you'll understand

0:09:05 > 0:09:09# And not let go of my hand. #

0:09:09 > 0:09:14Succeeding in this challenge was a massive achievement for Howard

0:09:14 > 0:09:19- and had a big effect on the audience.- It moved me to tears.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21Tears!

0:09:21 > 0:09:24I think Howard found it difficult,

0:09:24 > 0:09:28but he's proved to himself he has got the courage

0:09:28 > 0:09:33and hopefully he'll be able to do that more often.

0:09:33 > 0:09:37Watching him come to terms with people not worrying about Tourette's

0:09:37 > 0:09:43when he has such a beautiful voice, that was great. He found confidence.

0:09:47 > 0:09:52Gareth had to get all of the nervous singers performing

0:09:52 > 0:09:55to 40,000 people in just a matter of weeks.

0:09:55 > 0:09:59Getting rid of their insecurities was key.

0:09:59 > 0:10:04A lot of these challenges were just about getting their confidence up,

0:10:04 > 0:10:08having fun, being expressive and just feeling comfortable.

0:10:08 > 0:10:12And Gareth was more than happy to lead by example.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15# Do a little dance Make a little love

0:10:15 > 0:10:20# Get down tonight Get down tonight... #

0:10:21 > 0:10:26Letting their hair down was just the boost these shy kids needed.

0:10:26 > 0:10:31We did an air guitar competition and I think

0:10:31 > 0:10:34I really let go of it. It's just like singing.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37You can just go for it.

0:10:37 > 0:10:41If I go for this, with my singing I'll do a lot better.

0:10:41 > 0:10:46Once she'd done that, I knew she'd got the confidence I was looking for

0:10:46 > 0:10:49to make an idiot of herself,

0:10:49 > 0:10:53to prat around in front of other people and not worry.

0:10:53 > 0:10:57It was all very well giving them the courage to dance around,

0:10:57 > 0:11:02but they were still struggling to sing as a group.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05# I'm going in for the kill... #

0:11:05 > 0:11:10A fact that was pretty obvious in front of the man from the Proms.

0:11:10 > 0:11:14# And don't let go of my hand. #

0:11:14 > 0:11:17I think I'd have to be honest

0:11:17 > 0:11:20and say they're not quite ready yet.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23There's still work for Gareth to do.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29With Gareth's glam rock challenge,

0:11:29 > 0:11:33it was clear that to be able to perform at Proms In The Park,

0:11:33 > 0:11:36they were going to have to lose their inhibitions.

0:11:36 > 0:11:41To bring them out of their shell, the group had to strut their stuff

0:11:41 > 0:11:46in the centre of Birmingham dressed as Lady Gaga.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48- Even the boys!- Well done, Oli!

0:11:48 > 0:11:52For one of the group, this was a step too far.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55- You'll get applause.- I'm not going!

0:11:55 > 0:11:58I saw someone go...

0:11:59 > 0:12:01I was terrified.

0:12:01 > 0:12:05- I have a lobster on my head! - You look great!

0:12:05 > 0:12:08A big lobster. I repeat - lobster.

0:12:08 > 0:12:12Hello. Are you Miriyah? I'm Gareth, hi.

0:12:12 > 0:12:16When Gareth first met Miriyah, her confidence had taken a big knock.

0:12:16 > 0:12:22- What's the worst thing to happen? - People made fun of my singing.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25- That must be very upsetting.- Yeah.

0:12:25 > 0:12:30Despite Miriyah's lack of self belief, her voice shone through.

0:12:30 > 0:12:36# You don't have to be afraid of what you are... #

0:12:36 > 0:12:41Wow! She's seriously very, very good. Pure, natural talent.

0:12:41 > 0:12:45# ..that a hero lies in you. #

0:12:45 > 0:12:47Good!

0:12:47 > 0:12:53Because she's such a confident singer, to see her refuse to go out

0:12:53 > 0:12:56revealed what her issue was,

0:12:56 > 0:13:00which is just worrying what people will say.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03While Miriyah was a no-show,

0:13:03 > 0:13:07the rest of the group rose to the glam rock challenge.

0:13:10 > 0:13:14That is glam rock attitude. That's how you do it.

0:13:14 > 0:13:18Everybody else went before me. In the end, I said, "OK, I'll go."

0:13:18 > 0:13:21Everybody else seemed to do well.

0:13:28 > 0:13:32It made me think it doesn't matter what other people think.

0:13:32 > 0:13:37If I feel comfortable wearing it, it doesn't matter.

0:13:42 > 0:13:46As part of Gareth's training for Proms In The Park,

0:13:46 > 0:13:50each week the group took on a different musical style.

0:13:50 > 0:13:54You have to be able to do a variety of styles.

0:13:54 > 0:13:59- Some were an instant hit. - Today is pop music!- Yeah!

0:13:59 > 0:14:01Are you excited?

0:14:01 > 0:14:05- Others weren't even on their radar. - Glam rock.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08Is it posh people's rock?

0:14:08 > 0:14:13- When it came to Oli and Chris's solo...- It's country music.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16# Your cheatin' heart... #

0:14:16 > 0:14:22- Christ tried to show an interest, but not Oli.- I'm not doing it.

0:14:22 > 0:14:26- You don't want to do it? - I hate the song too much.

0:14:26 > 0:14:31- you need to give it a go. Is this a complete refusal?- Yeah.

0:14:31 > 0:14:33'I hate country music'

0:14:33 > 0:14:38and I just thought, "I'm going home. It's stupid."

0:14:38 > 0:14:43I thought he would walk out and some of the others might follow.

0:14:43 > 0:14:48- It was a really touch and go time. - I'm not doing it.

0:14:49 > 0:14:53From the very beginning, Oli was incredibly self-conscious.

0:14:53 > 0:14:59I can sing in front of anyone with my eyes closed and headphones on.

0:14:59 > 0:15:05- I'll lose my friends. - Lose all your friends? Oh, come on.

0:15:05 > 0:15:09Oli needed to know that I really believed he was a good singer

0:15:09 > 0:15:13and he wasn't going to look like an idiot.

0:15:13 > 0:15:17- Do you think you can do it? - Don't know.- I reckon you can.

0:15:17 > 0:15:23I think just the fact that everyone was behind me made me have a go.

0:15:23 > 0:15:27# Your cheatin' heart

0:15:27 > 0:15:31# Will tell on you... #

0:15:31 > 0:15:35He would never have imagined I'd make him sing a country song.

0:15:35 > 0:15:40Now I'm really glad I did. I was right. Muhahaha!

0:15:44 > 0:15:49With only two weeks to the Proms, the tour bus arrived in London.

0:15:49 > 0:15:53There was just one person left to try out for the solo spot.

0:15:53 > 0:15:56It's you, Jordan.

0:15:56 > 0:16:00What musical style could Gareth choose for rapper Jordan?

0:16:00 > 0:16:02Classical music.

0:16:02 > 0:16:08I had to sing classical music. And I'm not really into that.

0:16:08 > 0:16:13At his audition, it was clear he was anything but a classical music fan.

0:16:13 > 0:16:17# If you walk out, baby I'll understand

0:16:17 > 0:16:21# Cos all I do is hurt you again. #

0:16:21 > 0:16:25When Jordan came in to the audition and rapped, I despaired.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28How will I get this kid to sing?

0:16:28 > 0:16:33The challenge was on, but with the help of Faryl Smith,

0:16:33 > 0:16:36Gareth got Jordan hitting more than notes.

0:16:36 > 0:16:39Singing is like playing football.

0:16:39 > 0:16:44- How?- Because there's the ball. What do you do with your energy?

0:16:44 > 0:16:49- Kick the ball.- Where does the energy go?- In the ball.- Straight out.

0:16:49 > 0:16:54That's why it's like football. You take your breath, your energy,

0:16:54 > 0:16:56and send it out to the crowd.

0:16:56 > 0:17:02But how would Jordan and the group manage to project their voices

0:17:02 > 0:17:06to a real crowd of 15,000 people at Reading Football Club?

0:17:06 > 0:17:11When Gareth told me I was singing at Reading, I was very nervous.

0:17:11 > 0:17:13I didn't think I'd do it.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16# Oh, Danny boy

0:17:16 > 0:17:21# The pipes, the pipes are calling... #

0:17:21 > 0:17:24There was loads of fans that were shouting,

0:17:24 > 0:17:29but I just blocked out the fans and carried on singing.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32# Oh, Danny boy, oh, Danny boy

0:17:32 > 0:17:38# I love you so. #

0:17:38 > 0:17:40At the end,

0:17:40 > 0:17:45I felt happy because I was doing something I never thought I would do.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48Yes! Brilliant! Well done!

0:17:48 > 0:17:52Jordan the rapper to Jordan the singer. What a journey.

0:17:59 > 0:18:04By Week Ten, all of the singers had tried out for the solo spot

0:18:04 > 0:18:07with varying degrees of success.

0:18:07 > 0:18:11Katie and Annabel both have a low chance.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13Chloe has a medium chance.

0:18:13 > 0:18:16High chance...low chance...

0:18:16 > 0:18:20With only one week until they sing to 40,000 people

0:18:20 > 0:18:25at Proms In The Park, Gareth had to pick the Big Performance soloist.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30Emily. Howard.
