0:00:18 > 0:00:19..to face their ultimate fear...
0:00:21 > 0:00:24..singing to a crowd of 40,000 people.
0:00:24 > 0:00:27There's enough people there to eat you alive.
0:00:28 > 0:00:31I just can't explain how I feel. I'm just really scared.
0:00:31 > 0:00:35Could you do it? This is The Big Performance.
0:00:40 > 0:00:44# Aaah... Aah-aah-aah-aah...

0:00:58 > 0:01:01These shy singers are halfway through their Big Performance
0:01:01 > 0:01:05tour of the country. In just six weeks, they must take to the stage
0:01:05 > 0:01:09at one of Britain's largest outdoor concerts - Proms in the Park.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11At the last stop on their musical journey,
0:01:11 > 0:01:13a walk-out threatened the performance.
0:01:13 > 0:01:15- What happened? - I don't want to do it.
0:01:15 > 0:01:17Today, their confidence is tested even further,
0:01:17 > 0:01:21as they sing to their most important audience yet.
0:01:21 > 0:01:23He may only be one man, but this is a really big deal.
0:01:23 > 0:01:25Will the man from the Proms say yes?
0:01:25 > 0:01:30All of the acts who take part have got to convince everybody
0:01:30 > 0:01:31they're the best.
0:01:37 > 0:01:41Today, The Big Performance tour bus is heading into the heart of the UK,
0:01:41 > 0:01:44the Midlands. Home to Howard, musical maestro Ozzy Osbourne
0:01:44 > 0:01:46and R&B star Jamelia.
0:01:46 > 0:01:47There's a radical shift
0:01:47 > 0:01:50in the music style this week.
0:01:50 > 0:01:52It's not the kind of music they're expecting.
0:01:52 > 0:01:54I think it could be kind of like hippie...
0:01:54 > 0:01:58and, like, '70s music.
0:01:58 > 0:02:00I don't actually know which music style
0:02:00 > 0:02:02we'll be doing, but if I could guess,
0:02:02 > 0:02:05I'd think it'd be something like classical.
0:02:05 > 0:02:07I'm excited. It's very of the moment.
0:02:07 > 0:02:10My shiny suit is a little bit of a clue.
0:02:11 > 0:02:15Right, it's our fifth stop and this week, it's a little bit different.
0:02:15 > 0:02:17The music theme is...
0:02:17 > 0:02:19Electro-pop.
0:02:19 > 0:02:20THEY LAUGH
0:02:20 > 0:02:23And the soloist is... Drum roll, please!
0:02:23 > 0:02:27The soloist is...Howard.
0:02:29 > 0:02:31I love musical theatre,
0:02:31 > 0:02:34but I can't stand rock or pop.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37My favourite song is Where Is Love? from Oliver Twist.
0:02:37 > 0:02:41My worst fear is singing in front of strangers.
0:02:41 > 0:02:43Right, let's go, come on.
0:02:43 > 0:02:46Electro-pop started in the late '70s and early '80s.
0:02:46 > 0:02:48Its recent revival is thanks to artists
0:02:48 > 0:02:50such as Ellie Goulding,
0:02:50 > 0:02:51Lady Gaga and La Roux.
0:02:53 > 0:02:56# Oh! Everybody's starry-eyed... #
0:02:56 > 0:02:59I don't really know what electro-pop is. I've never heard of it.
0:02:59 > 0:03:02I think that it'll be, um, techno
0:03:02 > 0:03:03with, like, vocals in it.
0:03:03 > 0:03:05I think it's kind of like...
0:03:05 > 0:03:07rock music, kind of, maybe.
0:03:07 > 0:03:10Today's music venue - the Custard Factory,
0:03:10 > 0:03:12a media arts centre in the heart of Birmingham -
0:03:12 > 0:03:15has played host to some of the world's biggest stars,
0:03:15 > 0:03:17including Amy Winehouse.
0:03:17 > 0:03:22Guys, we are now back in the 1980s, and this is electro-pop.
0:03:22 > 0:03:25MUSIC: "Don't Go" by Yazoo
0:03:25 > 0:03:29'When you're singing a new style of music, you've got to understand it,'
0:03:29 > 0:03:31not just sing it in a vacuum.
0:03:31 > 0:03:32# Came in from the city
0:03:32 > 0:03:34# Walked into the door I turned around
0:03:34 > 0:03:38# When I heard the sound of footsteps on the floor... #
0:03:38 > 0:03:40Electro-pop came from synthesizers and disco,
0:03:40 > 0:03:42it's a totally different era,
0:03:42 > 0:03:44so just having a go at being in a disco,
0:03:44 > 0:03:46seeing these lights,
0:03:46 > 0:03:49getting into the mindset is very important when you're singing.
0:03:49 > 0:03:51Howard, yeah! # Don't go! #
0:03:51 > 0:03:55The choice of music, so far, hasn't struck a chord with the kids.
0:03:55 > 0:03:58# Your cheatin' heart... #
0:03:58 > 0:04:02- They were embarrassed by Country... - Do you like country music?- No.- No.
0:04:02 > 0:04:04- Do you hate country music? - Yep.- Yep.
0:04:04 > 0:04:06UPBEAT MUSIC
0:04:06 > 0:04:08..and show tunes failed to razzle-dazzle.
0:04:08 > 0:04:12'I'm a bit disappointed about the song, because...'
0:04:12 > 0:04:14it's not a song you can jump around to.
0:04:14 > 0:04:18Will the electro-pop track get a more positive response?
0:04:18 > 0:04:20The song that I've chosen for you
0:04:20 > 0:04:23is one of my absolute favourites of the minute. It's called...
0:04:23 > 0:04:25In For The Kill, and it's by La Roux. Know it?
0:04:25 > 0:04:29- Yes.- Oh, brilliant! - I love that song!- Yes!
0:04:29 > 0:04:32A song that you love. # I'm going in
0:04:32 > 0:04:33# For the kill
0:04:33 > 0:04:34# I'm doing it
0:04:34 > 0:04:36# For a thrill
0:04:36 > 0:04:40# Oh, I'm hoping you'll understand
0:04:40 > 0:04:43# And not let go of my hand... #
0:04:43 > 0:04:45La Roux's hit, In For The Kill, peaked at number two
0:04:45 > 0:04:49in the UK singles chart, bringing them massive success.
0:04:49 > 0:04:52They've gone on to receive countless Brit Award nominations,
0:04:52 > 0:04:56an NME Award, and they're in demand on the British festival circuit.
0:04:56 > 0:04:57I really like this song.
0:04:57 > 0:04:58It's all electronic
0:04:58 > 0:05:00and it makes you want to dance and move.
0:05:00 > 0:05:03I like it because it's actually modern,
0:05:03 > 0:05:05unlike the others. Hallelujah!
0:05:05 > 0:05:07# And don't let go of my hand. #
0:05:09 > 0:05:14# We get ever so hot
0:05:14 > 0:05:16# Ooh-ooh
0:05:16 > 0:05:18# Whether we like it or not. #
0:05:18 > 0:05:20Good. Don't fade away, keep it going.
0:05:20 > 0:05:22As soon as I said La Roux, In For The Kill,
0:05:22 > 0:05:24they had a really positive reaction.
0:05:24 > 0:05:28It's a great song. It's very popular and they've all heard of it
0:05:28 > 0:05:30# Ooh-ooh
0:05:30 > 0:05:32# Whether we like it or not. #
0:05:32 > 0:05:35Yeah. Good attitude. 'I was really starting to worry'
0:05:35 > 0:05:38we'd never get a good sound out of them, but THAT is singing
0:05:38 > 0:05:40like I have not heard out of them yet.
0:05:40 > 0:05:42# I'm going in for the kill
0:05:42 > 0:05:49# I'm doing it for the thrill Oh, I'm hoping you'll understand
0:05:49 > 0:05:52# And not let go of my hand. #
0:05:52 > 0:05:56But this song isn't a popular choice for today's soloist.
0:05:56 > 0:05:57Singing a modern song
0:05:57 > 0:05:59feels weird, because I don't normally
0:05:59 > 0:06:01sing songs like this,
0:06:01 > 0:06:05and it feels strange, because I normally listen to music theatre.
0:06:05 > 0:06:09There's added pressure for Howard with today's performance test.
0:06:09 > 0:06:10Now, as you know,
0:06:10 > 0:06:14up until now, all the audiences have been getting bigger and bigger...
0:06:14 > 0:06:19and bigger and bigger. This week, it's just one man...
0:06:19 > 0:06:21THEY GIGGLE ..but this man
0:06:21 > 0:06:24is the most important man you are going to sing to,
0:06:24 > 0:06:28because he is from BBC Proms in the Park.
0:06:29 > 0:06:32Later on today, the group must sing La Roux's In For The Kill
0:06:32 > 0:06:36at Warwick Castle in front of the man from the Proms,
0:06:36 > 0:06:41Chief Executive of the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra,
0:06:41 > 0:06:43Mr Stephen Maddock.
0:06:43 > 0:06:45It's a huge event - 40,000 people there,
0:06:45 > 0:06:48who've all paid money to be entertained,
0:06:48 > 0:06:51so all of the acts who take part have got to be
0:06:51 > 0:06:54absolutely at the best level, and they've got to convince everybody
0:06:54 > 0:06:56that they're the best.
0:06:58 > 0:07:01The group is halfway through musical training,
0:07:01 > 0:07:03and there's no-one they need to impress more.
0:07:03 > 0:07:06Things are getting serious, we're looking at Proms in the Park.
0:07:06 > 0:07:09It may only be one man, but this is a really big deal.
0:07:09 > 0:07:12# Ooh, oh-oh! #
0:07:14 > 0:07:15OK, have a seat.
0:07:15 > 0:07:18Gareth has spent the last four weeks building up the group's confidence.
0:07:18 > 0:07:21He now wants them to understand
0:07:21 > 0:07:25exactly the kind of performance expected at Proms in the Park.
0:07:25 > 0:07:28What happens when we get in front of an audience?
0:07:28 > 0:07:30- Do you get shy?- Yeah.- Yeah.
0:07:30 > 0:07:34So, I'm going to show you a little video of...
0:07:34 > 0:07:37your previous performances. THEY GROAN
0:07:37 > 0:07:40# Can you feel it? Can you feel it? #
0:07:40 > 0:07:43Severe stage fright affected their first performance
0:07:43 > 0:07:45in front of Gareth's old school choir.
0:07:45 > 0:07:48# Spread the word and try to teach the man... #
0:07:48 > 0:07:50Are you smiling?
0:07:50 > 0:07:54Yeah? Are you co-ordinated? Keep watching it.
0:07:54 > 0:07:57# Cos we're all the same Yes, the blood inside of me... #
0:07:57 > 0:08:00- That sounds awful.- I know. We need some more work.
0:08:00 > 0:08:02Yeah!
0:08:02 > 0:08:04# I'd be tender. I'd be gentle... #
0:08:04 > 0:08:07Their show tune from the Wizard Of Oz lacked courage...
0:08:07 > 0:08:09- # Regarding love and art. # - Howard.
0:08:09 > 0:08:11Where was the smile?
0:08:11 > 0:08:14# I'd be friends with the sparrows and the boy who shoots the arrows
0:08:14 > 0:08:16- # If I only had a heart... # - Oli?- Yes.
0:08:16 > 0:08:19- Slightly depressed face!- Yeah.
0:08:19 > 0:08:23Jordan, looking a little bit shy, but better.
0:08:23 > 0:08:24# How sweet. #
0:08:26 > 0:08:27# When tears come down... #
0:08:27 > 0:08:31Country could have done with a little more yee-hah!
0:08:31 > 0:08:33# Like falling rain... #
0:08:33 > 0:08:34Falling!
0:08:34 > 0:08:38- # You'll toss around... # - That's better, isn't it?
0:08:38 > 0:08:41- I look like a moron.- You don't look like a moron. Look at it.
0:08:41 > 0:08:46# You'll walk the floor
0:08:46 > 0:08:48- # The way I do... # - Annabel's doing a good job.
0:08:48 > 0:08:52- She's looking straight ahead. - # Your cheatin' heart... #
0:08:52 > 0:08:57- I'm not seeing many smiles though. - # Will tell on you. #
0:08:57 > 0:08:59APPLAUSE Good.
0:08:59 > 0:09:02This is a real wake-up call for the group. They can see
0:09:02 > 0:09:04how their fear is holding them back.
0:09:04 > 0:09:08- Did it have confidence?- No. - Did it have energy?- No.- No.
0:09:08 > 0:09:10Did you look like you enjoyed it?
0:09:10 > 0:09:13- Did you project your performance?- No. - Right.
0:09:13 > 0:09:15We just looked frustrated and angry,
0:09:15 > 0:09:18like something bad had happened, but nothing bad had happened.
0:09:18 > 0:09:23Watching yourself back on video is quite a scary thing,
0:09:23 > 0:09:26so you realise, "Oh, maybe I wasn't as good as I thought I was."
0:09:26 > 0:09:29That's difficult, but we have to keep going, no matter what.
0:09:29 > 0:09:33With some tough lessons learnt, it's time to put them into practice.
0:09:33 > 0:09:35Invest more energy!
0:09:35 > 0:09:37SINGING GROWS LOUDER Good! Smile!
0:09:37 > 0:09:39# Ooh-ooh-ooh... #
0:09:39 > 0:09:42'It's hard, I think, for them to remember'
0:09:42 > 0:09:46just how petrified they were at the beginning.
0:09:46 > 0:09:48They would not sing in front of each other at first.
0:09:48 > 0:09:50And we've got way beyond that
0:09:50 > 0:09:53to them actually starting to make a really solid sound.
0:09:53 > 0:09:57# Oh, I'm hoping you'll understand... #
0:09:57 > 0:09:58Energy!
0:09:58 > 0:10:01# And not let go of my hand... #
0:10:01 > 0:10:04For the first time, I felt like the whole group came together,
0:10:04 > 0:10:07and we stood up and after a discussion
0:10:07 > 0:10:09about what we needed to do, we sang.
0:10:09 > 0:10:10And they were good.
0:10:10 > 0:10:14# I'm going in for the kill
0:10:14 > 0:10:16# I'm doing it for a thrill
0:10:16 > 0:10:21# Oh, I'm hoping you'll understand
0:10:21 > 0:10:24# And not let go of my hand. #
0:10:24 > 0:10:25Beautiful.
0:10:28 > 0:10:31In rehearsal, a newly-inspired Isthaque
0:10:31 > 0:10:33bravely attempts the high notes...
0:10:33 > 0:10:35- OFF-KEY: - # La-la-la-la-la-la-la! #
0:10:35 > 0:10:38LAUGHTER
0:10:38 > 0:10:41..while soloist Howard gets extra coaching from Gareth.
0:10:41 > 0:10:44- Howard, how are you feeling? - A bit nervous.
0:10:44 > 0:10:46OK, well, let's sort out your solo.
0:10:46 > 0:10:4711-year-old Howard,
0:10:47 > 0:10:51one of the youngest in the group, has Tourette's syndrome,
0:10:51 > 0:10:54which causes his body to jerk and move in unexpected ways,
0:10:54 > 0:10:56something he's not always able to control.
0:10:56 > 0:10:59It doesn't stop him loving swimming and the outdoors.
0:10:59 > 0:11:02He's even trekked from one coast of Britain to the other!
0:11:02 > 0:11:06But it does stop him singing in front of others, even his mum.
0:11:06 > 0:11:10Despite his love of musical theatre, Howard is petrified
0:11:10 > 0:11:11people will laugh at his tics.
0:11:12 > 0:11:14# Where... #
0:11:14 > 0:11:16At the first stop on The Big Performance tour,
0:11:16 > 0:11:19Howard plucked up the courage to sing solo in front of
0:11:19 > 0:11:20the rest of the group.
0:11:20 > 0:11:22# Skies above... #
0:11:22 > 0:11:26- When he just sang that, I was like, "Whoa."- Beautiful, isn't it?- Yeah.
0:11:26 > 0:11:29But he's yet to conquer his fear of singing in front of strangers
0:11:29 > 0:11:32who have no idea he has Tourette's.
0:11:32 > 0:11:35# Let's be cold to create heat... #
0:11:35 > 0:11:38Right. We know you can sing. That's a great voice, yeah?
0:11:38 > 0:11:39No problem with that.
0:11:39 > 0:11:41You're a little bit stiff.
0:11:41 > 0:11:43So now we're going to have a boxing match, OK?
0:11:43 > 0:11:45Gareth wants Howard to loosen up
0:11:45 > 0:11:47and start connecting with his audience.
0:11:47 > 0:11:49# Peace
0:11:49 > 0:11:52# Let's be cold to create heat... #
0:11:52 > 0:11:54See if you can land a punch on me.
0:11:54 > 0:11:57# Let's go to war to make peace... #
0:11:57 > 0:11:58Use the punches with the words.
0:11:58 > 0:12:04# Let's go to war to make peace
0:12:04 > 0:12:07# Let's be cold to create heat. #
0:12:07 > 0:12:11I don't care about your tics. An audience isn't going to care.
0:12:11 > 0:12:14What they will be interested in is your voice.
0:12:14 > 0:12:17It's all about what's going on here, yeah? In the eyes.
0:12:17 > 0:12:21In your singing, in your inner confidence, yeah?
0:12:21 > 0:12:23Well done, that's going to be great.
0:12:27 > 0:12:31The electro-pop sound is made from synthesized electronic beats.
0:12:31 > 0:12:35Time for the group to discover if they've got an ear for it.
0:12:35 > 0:12:37This is DJ school.
0:12:37 > 0:12:40SCRATCHING AND SAMPLES PLAY
0:12:42 > 0:12:44This is about you learning how electro-pop
0:12:44 > 0:12:48is layered up with drumbeats and the sounds and the voice.
0:12:48 > 0:12:52We're going to have a competition. We're going to get into teams.
0:12:52 > 0:12:55'They're going to make up their own electro-pop tracks.'
0:12:55 > 0:12:57I think that will be really good for them,
0:12:57 > 0:12:59to get into the style of electro-pop
0:12:59 > 0:13:02and understand how much effort goes into making music,

0:13:28 > 0:13:31the best track. I want you to keep it simple. That means
0:13:31 > 0:13:33the track should have a nice melody, good beat,

0:13:36 > 0:13:39'Meeting a Radio 1 DJ and having him say'
0:13:39 > 0:13:41that singing an electro-pop song is cool,
0:13:41 > 0:13:43I think it's really helpful.
0:13:43 > 0:13:46The competition is on, with a drum kit, a vocoder
0:13:46 > 0:13:48that manipulates the sound of your voice...
0:13:48 > 0:13:51DISTORTED: # I've got the power... #

0:13:52 > 0:13:54- SCRATCHING - ..and keyboard.
0:13:54 > 0:13:57The two groups have 30 minutes to put their track together.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03just enjoying making music together.
0:14:03 > 0:14:06As the group starts experimenting with different sounds...

0:14:13 > 0:14:14You are amazing!
0:14:14 > 0:14:17But everybody knows the most important thing
0:14:17 > 0:14:19about being in a band is the name.
0:14:19 > 0:14:20It's called DJ Stars?
0:14:20 > 0:14:22- BP Stars.- DJ Stars. One of them.
0:14:22 > 0:14:25- I think DJ Stars is good. - Oh, see, see, see? Oh!

0:14:32 > 0:14:36Could somebody sing "A-Class Rhythm" into the vocoder? Chloe? Howard.
0:14:36 > 0:14:38Howard's the electro-pop man.
0:14:38 > 0:14:40Electro-pop has found a new fan.
0:14:40 > 0:14:43A previously-reluctant Howard appears to be changing his tune.
0:14:43 > 0:14:46# A-Class Rhythm
0:14:46 > 0:14:48# A-Class Rhythm. #
0:14:48 > 0:14:52Group Two decides on I Have The Power as their name,

0:14:56 > 0:14:59# Ali-i-i-ive... #
0:14:59 > 0:15:04But when it's Emily's turn, her confidence takes a dive.
0:15:04 > 0:15:05Just a couple of notes, yeah?
0:15:07 > 0:15:10When Gareth first met Emily, she was so timid,
0:15:10 > 0:15:13she could barely sing a simple nursery rhyme.
0:15:13 > 0:15:15# Twinkle, twinkle, little... #
0:15:15 > 0:15:16I can't!
0:15:16 > 0:15:19You just did! You just did!

0:15:24 > 0:15:27Emily is still terrified of sounding stupid when she sings.
0:15:27 > 0:15:30Come on, try it. It'll be fine.
0:15:30 > 0:15:32No-one in this room's going to laugh,
0:15:32 > 0:15:34they're just going to encourage you
0:15:34 > 0:15:36to give it another go until you nail it.
0:15:36 > 0:15:39I was trying to let them know, "Just have fun.
0:15:39 > 0:15:41"Smile. It's not the end of the world, go for it,
0:15:41 > 0:15:44"and if we make a mistake, we'll do it again."
0:15:44 > 0:15:45# She had the power
0:15:45 > 0:15:47# But has thrown it away... #
0:15:47 > 0:15:50Emily, beautiful. That's great.
0:15:51 > 0:15:53'Making our own songs is really cool,'
0:15:53 > 0:15:58because we're learning how to do what pop stars actually do.
0:15:58 > 0:16:01Practice over, it's time for the two bands to lay down
0:16:01 > 0:16:03- their electro grooves.- OK, everyone,
0:16:03 > 0:16:06we're going to go for a take. Any last tips?

0:16:57 > 0:16:59# I had the power
0:16:59 > 0:17:02# But you stole it away
0:17:02 > 0:17:07# Now I can think twice in my everyday life
0:17:07 > 0:17:12# I had the power but you stole it away. #
0:17:12 > 0:17:14Woo!
0:17:14 > 0:17:18With two tracks in the can, it's down to judges Gareth and Tom

0:17:20 > 0:17:24- It's a good start.- It's poppy... Yeah, I like it. I like it.
0:17:24 > 0:17:28We've got A-class rhythm. It even says it in the lyrics!
0:17:28 > 0:17:29Please pick our team. Come on!
0:17:29 > 0:17:32- Yeah, it's quite "up", isn't it?- Mmm.
0:17:32 > 0:17:35I'm going to put a tick by this, is that all right?
0:17:35 > 0:17:36Feels like a tick, yeah.
0:17:36 > 0:17:39Pick our team, pick our team, pick our team!
0:17:39 > 0:17:42- This is catchy.- Is it as good as the other one, though?
0:17:42 > 0:17:44Could you play this on Radio 1?
0:17:44 > 0:17:47Pick my team, cos it's enough that I did drumming, let alone singing!
0:17:47 > 0:17:50- I'm going to, so pick it! - SHE CLICKS HER TONGUE
0:17:50 > 0:17:52I hate breaking hearts, Gareth.
0:17:52 > 0:17:54It's a cruel business, the music industry.
0:17:54 > 0:17:57We're going to have to smash a few dreams today. THEY SIGH
0:17:57 > 0:18:02After some careful deliberation, Tom and Gareth have agreed a winner.
0:18:02 > 0:18:03Take a deep breath.
0:18:03 > 0:18:05GARETH INHALES SHARPLY AND MIMICS A DRUM ROLL
0:18:09 > 0:18:11I Have The Power...
0:18:11 > 0:18:13- ALL: Yes! - ..did it today!
0:18:13 > 0:18:14Well done. Very good.
0:18:14 > 0:18:17This group proved they had the most musicality
0:18:17 > 0:18:19and succeeded in making the best electro-pop track.
0:18:19 > 0:18:22- We won! We won! - SHE SCREAMS
0:18:22 > 0:18:24- SHE SCREAMS - Woo! We won, we won!
0:18:24 > 0:18:26I think you should shake hands with the other team.
0:18:26 > 0:18:30Runners-up A-Class Rhythm still feel like winners.
0:18:30 > 0:18:35We feel like we have won in a way, because we've made our own track.
0:18:35 > 0:18:39It was great that we got to learn about electro-pop music.
0:18:39 > 0:18:42Even though we didn't win, it was a great experience.
0:18:42 > 0:18:46That's the first time I've seen them look excited about making music.
0:18:46 > 0:18:50Now I've seen what they're capable of, I expect that every week.
0:18:50 > 0:18:53And I'm expecting great things from the performance.
0:18:59 > 0:19:03Today is Howard's turn under the solo spotlight.
0:19:03 > 0:19:06And as usual, Gareth wants him to face his fears
0:19:06 > 0:19:08before his Proms test in six weeks.
0:19:08 > 0:19:10So he's brought him to a cafe in Warwickshire.
0:19:10 > 0:19:15This place is full of customers and they've all turned up
0:19:15 > 0:19:17to hear Howard sing.
0:19:17 > 0:19:21The reason that Howard is so nervous about singing in front of strangers
0:19:21 > 0:19:24is that they won't know he has Tourette's,
0:19:24 > 0:19:26so he'll be very, very worried about his tics.
0:19:26 > 0:19:29And there's someone desperate to hear Howard sing - his mum.
0:19:29 > 0:19:33I've never heard Howard sing in front of me
0:19:33 > 0:19:37and he doesn't know I'm here, so it's going to be quite hard for him.
0:19:37 > 0:19:41I'm really scared of singing in front of strangers
0:19:41 > 0:19:43because I don't want them to laugh at me
0:19:43 > 0:19:45about my tics or anything like that.
0:19:45 > 0:19:50Howard's had some quite big setbacks as a result of his Tourette's.
0:19:50 > 0:19:52I hope that this will help him to see
0:19:52 > 0:19:57that the tics shouldn't be an obstacle in his way
0:19:57 > 0:20:01and that he should carry on and do all the things that he's capable of.
0:20:01 > 0:20:04This is Howard's chance to prove to himself
0:20:04 > 0:20:07that his tics don't have to hold him back forever.
0:20:07 > 0:20:09Let's do this. After you.
0:20:10 > 0:20:12You come and stand here, Howard.
0:20:12 > 0:20:13Hello, everyone. This is Howard.
0:20:13 > 0:20:15ALL: Hi, Howard.
0:20:15 > 0:20:17- Are you ready?- Yeah.- Yeah? OK.
0:20:19 > 0:20:22# We can fight our desires
0:20:22 > 0:20:25# Ooh, ooh
0:20:25 > 0:20:27# We're in the...fires... #
0:20:27 > 0:20:30Howard's nerves threaten to get the better of him,
0:20:30 > 0:20:32as he stumbles on his lyrics.
0:20:32 > 0:20:35# We get ever so hot
0:20:35 > 0:20:37# Ooh, ooh
0:20:37 > 0:20:41# And what are feelings without emotions?
0:20:46 > 0:20:47# I'm going in for... #
0:20:47 > 0:20:49But he continues like a true professional.
0:20:49 > 0:20:52# I'm doing it for a thrill
0:20:52 > 0:20:55# Oh, I'm hoping you'll understand
0:20:55 > 0:20:59# And not let go of my hand. #
0:21:00 > 0:21:03APPLAUSE
0:21:03 > 0:21:04Well done!
0:21:04 > 0:21:05Howard has succeeded.
0:21:05 > 0:21:07Take a bow.
0:21:09 > 0:21:13Howard, why don't you tell everyone why you were so especially nervous?
0:21:13 > 0:21:16I was nervous that people would be laughing about my tics,
0:21:16 > 0:21:20my disability. I can't help twitching and making noises
0:21:20 > 0:21:23- and lots of other things like that. - Did it happen then?- No.
0:21:23 > 0:21:27No, it didn't. Does it matter, do you think, that he has Tourette's?
0:21:27 > 0:21:30- Absolutely not. - I really don't think it does.
0:21:30 > 0:21:33You've got such a good voice, you win the audience over.
0:21:33 > 0:21:36- He moved me to tears, I have to say. - Oh, tears!
0:21:36 > 0:21:37LAUGHTER
0:21:37 > 0:21:40- Tears of a good sort. - Very, very, very good.
0:21:40 > 0:21:41Good job, Howard.
0:21:41 > 0:21:45I think Howard found it difficult, clearly.
0:21:45 > 0:21:49But I think he's proved to himself he has got the courage now.
0:21:49 > 0:21:53And hopefully he'll be able to do that more often.
0:21:54 > 0:21:57- Absolutely fantastic. Are you pleased?- Yeah, very.
0:21:57 > 0:22:00- Did you actually enjoy it? - Yeah, I actually had a good time.
0:22:00 > 0:22:03I had a nice time. I just want to do it again.
0:22:03 > 0:22:06I know he made a couple of little fluffs,
0:22:06 > 0:22:08but I thought he was really good.
0:22:08 > 0:22:09He got to the end of the song,
0:22:09 > 0:22:12and I think, most importantly, he enjoyed it.
0:22:16 > 0:22:19It's back on the road, as the group heads closer to
0:22:19 > 0:22:23that all-important performance in Warwickshire.
0:22:23 > 0:22:27With so much pressure on how they do today, preparation is crucial,
0:22:27 > 0:22:29as these celebrities will testify.
0:22:29 > 0:22:31I think for me to warm up for a show,
0:22:31 > 0:22:35I like to know what the crowd is, what kind of vibe they're on,
0:22:35 > 0:22:37what kind of music they like, so I can prepare myself
0:22:37 > 0:22:41and give them one of the best shows they've seen...in their life.
0:22:41 > 0:22:44Before every singing performance,
0:22:44 > 0:22:48I always do a full vocal warm-up,
0:22:48 > 0:22:51so scales and arpeggios.
0:22:51 > 0:22:55And often I quite like to sing through a song,
0:22:55 > 0:22:59or a couple of songs, that I'm about to perform.
0:22:59 > 0:23:02I have four songs that I always sing,
0:23:02 > 0:23:05just on my iPod, and I go over and over again.
0:23:05 > 0:23:09And I do my make-up and I get the costume on
0:23:09 > 0:23:11and that really helps you prepare for
0:23:11 > 0:23:13what you're going to go out and do.
0:23:13 > 0:23:15I call my nan sometimes.
0:23:15 > 0:23:17- "Hi, Nan. I'm going on stage." - "Well, we love you, love.
0:23:17 > 0:23:20"Have a good show and tell us how it went." I like all that.
0:23:20 > 0:23:23A bit of support from wherever you can get it.
0:23:25 > 0:23:27Warwick Castle.
0:23:27 > 0:23:31This week's performance venue was built over 1,000 years ago.
0:23:31 > 0:23:34And while this place has played host to many a battle and siege,
0:23:34 > 0:23:37it's also played host to Girls Aloud and JLS.
0:23:37 > 0:23:40I've never actually been to a proper castle,
0:23:40 > 0:23:43and it's just really big and we're doing a performance here.
0:23:43 > 0:23:46I love history. I think this castle's a "me" kind of place.
0:23:46 > 0:23:48And I'm really excited to be here.
0:23:48 > 0:23:54Kings, queens, dukes and duchesses have all been entertained here.
0:23:54 > 0:23:57But no-one more important than today's special guest.
0:23:58 > 0:24:01Mr Proms himself, Stephen Maddock.
0:24:01 > 0:24:04I've worked with some of the world's greatest acts,
0:24:04 > 0:24:06people who can command a big stage,
0:24:06 > 0:24:09know what the audience is looking for, and how to deliver it.
0:24:09 > 0:24:12At Proms in the Park, that's what you've got to do.
0:24:12 > 0:24:15It's a huge event - 40,000 people there.
0:24:15 > 0:24:18So all of the acts who take part
0:24:18 > 0:24:20have got to be absolutely at the best level.
0:24:23 > 0:24:27A successful electro-pop act has composure and inner confidence.
0:24:27 > 0:24:30The group can't afford to fall apart today.
0:24:30 > 0:24:33The man coming from the Proms has expectations.
0:24:33 > 0:24:36He wants to see a good show.
0:24:36 > 0:24:39So I really hope that they just...get it right.
0:24:39 > 0:24:43The stage is set. Have the group learnt from their past performances?
0:24:43 > 0:24:48Or will their nerves get the better of them once again?
0:24:48 > 0:24:50# We can fight our desires
0:24:50 > 0:24:54# Ooh, ooh
0:24:54 > 0:24:57# But when we start making fires
0:24:59 > 0:25:04# We get ever so hot
0:25:04 > 0:25:07# Ooh, ooh
0:25:07 > 0:25:10# Whether we like it or not
0:25:13 > 0:25:19# Let's go to war To make peace
0:25:19 > 0:25:25# Let's be cold To create heat
0:25:26 > 0:25:32# I hope in darkness We can see
0:25:32 > 0:25:37# And you're not blinded by the light from me
0:25:39 > 0:25:42# I'm going in for the kill
0:25:42 > 0:25:46# I'm doing it for a thrill
0:25:46 > 0:25:50# Oh, I'm hoping you'll understand
0:25:50 > 0:25:53# And not let go of my hand. #
0:25:56 > 0:26:00They're finally starting to perform together as a group.
0:26:00 > 0:26:03Can the man from the Proms see their potential?
0:26:03 > 0:26:06I'd have to be honest and say they're not quite ready
0:26:06 > 0:26:09for Proms in the Park yet. It's a work in progress.
0:26:09 > 0:26:14The singing is very nice, but it's about the whole performance.
0:26:14 > 0:26:16So in terms of really convincing me
0:26:16 > 0:26:19that they're ready to walk out and face that big crowd,
0:26:19 > 0:26:21there's still some work for Gareth to do.
0:26:21 > 0:26:25I think I've done well because I came in at the right times,
0:26:25 > 0:26:29I sang at the right times, and I sang in tune.
0:26:29 > 0:26:32I think that it was the best performance we've done
0:26:32 > 0:26:34because we really showed him how we can sing
0:26:34 > 0:26:36and how we can enjoy what we're doing.
0:26:36 > 0:26:38I still think that they could do better.
0:26:38 > 0:26:41I just feel like when we get into the performance,
0:26:41 > 0:26:45it just gets a little bit quieter, a little less energy than in rehearsal.
0:26:45 > 0:26:48But there's confidence coming. But I still expect more.
0:26:48 > 0:26:51I still feel that they could go the extra mile.
