0:01:53 > 0:01:56- Do you not...? Can you say "th"? - He can. He absolutely can.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07Even Gareth is feeling the strain.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10What I'm really scared about is that moment when we go out

0:02:10 > 0:02:12and there's 15,000 people.

0:02:18 > 0:02:23Today, The Big Performance tour bus is heading south to London.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26Nothing compares to this city when it comes to music.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28It's home to some of the best venues,

0:02:28 > 0:02:30festivals and talent in the world.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34Over the last few weeks the group have learned so much about music,

0:02:34 > 0:02:36so much about performance,

0:02:36 > 0:02:39but this week the style of music is very challenging

0:02:39 > 0:02:41and they'll have to bring all of that together

0:02:41 > 0:02:43and pull off something really special.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46So far Annabel, Katie, Chloe, Chris,

0:02:46 > 0:02:49Oli, Howard, Emily, Miriyah and Isthaque

0:02:49 > 0:02:52have each tried out for that all-important solo spot.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55This style of music that he's going to have to sing

0:02:55 > 0:02:56is a real challenge.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59I think when I tell the group what the music is this week,

0:02:59 > 0:03:01I think they'll be horrified.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04And with Emily still injured, the group is one person down.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11Hi, everyone. ALL: Hi!

0:03:11 > 0:03:13Another day, another stop on The Big Performance bus

0:03:13 > 0:03:17and guess whose solo it is this time?

0:03:17 > 0:03:19It's you, Jordan.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22# Yeah, solo, I'm ridin' solo

0:03:22 > 0:03:24# I'm ridin' solo I'm ridin' solo... #

0:03:24 > 0:03:26My favourite type of music is R&B

0:03:26 > 0:03:30and right now I like Jason Derulo's Ridin' Solo.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32My biggest passion is football.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34I like singing but rapping's more my thing.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36# Ridin' solo, solo. #

0:03:36 > 0:03:40- How are you feeling, Jordan? Not too nervous?- A little bit.- Let's go.

0:03:40 > 0:03:45Gareth has brought them to the prestigious Royal Academy of Music,

0:03:45 > 0:03:49a classical music college, producing stars Sir Elton John,

0:03:49 > 0:03:51Katherine Jenkins, Myleene Klass,

0:03:51 > 0:03:53and our very own Gareth Malone.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56This is the Royal Academy of Music, it's where I studied

0:03:56 > 0:03:59and it's where they teach the kind of music we'll do this week -

0:03:59 > 0:04:01classical music.

0:04:01 > 0:04:05MUSIC: Opening of Beethoven's 5th Symphony

0:04:05 > 0:04:09It's a kind of music that I am really, really passionate about

0:04:09 > 0:04:12and I hope after today, you're going to be as well.

0:04:12 > 0:04:13Let's go.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17Classical music is the bedrock for all other musical styles.

0:04:17 > 0:04:22Without it there would be no pop, rock or hip hop.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25All styles that are in the charts now

0:04:25 > 0:04:27have all come from classical music.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29A lot of great hip hop tracks

0:04:29 > 0:04:32and R&B tracks are samples from classical music,

0:04:32 > 0:04:34so it can be used in a cool way.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38Jay-Z, Kanye, everyone's using big massive strings and violins

0:04:38 > 0:04:40in their tracks. They're cool.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43I'm cool, I'm using strings in my music, so...

0:04:43 > 0:04:47Because of that, classical music is cool.

0:04:48 > 0:04:49Gareth has a hard task ahead -

0:04:49 > 0:04:51changing the perceptions of this group.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54I like hip hop and R&B,

0:04:54 > 0:04:58but I don't listen to classical music.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01I don't think classical music could be cool,

0:05:01 > 0:05:03or for young people at all.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06Their faces fell and they looked horrified.

0:05:06 > 0:05:08I'm looking forward to showing them

0:05:08 > 0:05:10that this kind of music is really exciting.

0:05:10 > 0:05:15Welcome, everyone, to the Duke's Hall in the Royal Academy of Music.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17The song that you're going to learn today

0:05:17 > 0:05:19is called Danny Boy.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21# Oh, Danny Boy

0:05:21 > 0:05:26# The pipes, the pipes Are calling... #

0:05:26 > 0:05:30Danny Boy is a folk song written 100 years ago,

0:05:30 > 0:05:33and is widely considered to be an Irish anthem.

0:05:33 > 0:05:35It's been covered by many artists,

0:05:35 > 0:05:37including classical boy band G4.

0:05:37 > 0:05:41# And all the roses falling... #

0:05:41 > 0:05:45Everything we've done up to this point has been easier for them

0:05:45 > 0:05:49because it's been rock or pop - even country was easier than classical.

0:05:49 > 0:05:51I think for them it's a big leap.

0:05:51 > 0:05:55I really, really, really, really, really, really hate classical.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59Who still feels that classical music might be for... I don't know,

0:05:59 > 0:06:01old, posh people?

0:06:01 > 0:06:02A couple of you.

0:06:02 > 0:06:04Well, I've got someone for you to meet

0:06:04 > 0:06:07who I think disproves that.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10Gareth wants to prove that classical singing

0:06:10 > 0:06:12can be appreciated by a younger audience

0:06:12 > 0:06:16and hopes this teenage star will do the trick.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19I've got for you today Faryl.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21APPLAUSE Hello, how are you, all right?

0:06:21 > 0:06:25- Good, thank you.- Good to see you. This is everybody, so Faryl...- Hello!

0:06:25 > 0:06:28# Somewhere far away

0:06:28 > 0:06:32# There's a soldier boy Who dreams a dream of home... #

0:06:32 > 0:06:33Faryl Smith shot to fame

0:06:33 > 0:06:36when she appeared on Britain's Got Talent

0:06:36 > 0:06:38singing Ave Maria at only 12 years old.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41# To the ones who sleep alone... #

0:06:41 > 0:06:47# Ave

0:06:47 > 0:06:53# Maria... #

0:06:53 > 0:06:58Three years on, and 15-year-old Faryl has already made two albums,

0:06:58 > 0:07:01with her debut being the fastest-selling solo classical album

0:07:01 > 0:07:03in British chart history.

0:07:03 > 0:07:08When she sang, she sounds like Susan Boyle or someone else like that.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10It's amazing.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14- # In hora... # - Faryl is just like them,

0:07:14 > 0:07:16she's a couple of years older than them,

0:07:16 > 0:07:20she's learning, she's trying, she's enjoying classical singing,

0:07:20 > 0:07:25and I think that proves to them that it is OK to sing this kind of music.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27# Amen. #

0:07:29 > 0:07:31How old are you again?

0:07:31 > 0:07:3215, just turned 15.

0:07:33 > 0:07:35Having sung Danny Boy in the past,

0:07:35 > 0:07:39Gareth hopes that Faryl can give his young singers some useful advice

0:07:39 > 0:07:40on how it should be performed.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43# Oh, Danny Boy

0:07:43 > 0:07:46# The pipes, the pipes Are calling... #

0:07:46 > 0:07:49Usually classical singers, when they go on they're quite posh,

0:07:49 > 0:07:53everyone expects them to be well spoken and things like that,

0:07:53 > 0:07:55and when I go on stage, a 15-year-old girl,

0:07:55 > 0:07:58I do like to kind of have fun when I'm on stage.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01# Oh, Danny Boy

0:08:01 > 0:08:06# Oh, Danny Boy I love you so. #

0:08:06 > 0:08:09If you just think that you're just picking it up off the floor

0:08:09 > 0:08:12as if it's easy like... # 'Tis I'll be here... #

0:08:12 > 0:08:14..as if you're just throwing the note away...

0:08:14 > 0:08:18Imagine that it's coming out the top of your head, really go for it.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22It's really interesting, when you did that, it just...really went.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24Because she was relaxed, you let the sound go.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27Another top tip is if we do a bend.

0:08:27 > 0:08:31So you go... # 'Tis I'll be here... #

0:08:31 > 0:08:33Yeah? Really big. Ready, and go.

0:08:33 > 0:08:37# 'Tis I'll be here... #

0:08:37 > 0:08:38# Oh, Danny Boy... #

0:08:38 > 0:08:41Tips over, Faryl heads to the back of the hall

0:08:41 > 0:08:44to make sure they are projecting their voices far enough.

0:08:44 > 0:08:49# From glen to glen And down the mountain side... #

0:08:49 > 0:08:53I think despite their initial feeling of, "What is this kind of music?"

0:08:53 > 0:08:57I think I'm turning them around, changing their minds, and if I can,

0:08:57 > 0:08:59it will give me great personal pride.

0:08:59 > 0:09:06# Oh, Danny Boy, oh, Danny Boy I love you so. #

0:09:06 > 0:09:10Like I said earlier, just make sure that it all flows really well

0:09:10 > 0:09:12but, to be honest, it sounds really nice,

0:09:12 > 0:09:15when I was standing up there, it sounds really good.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17Great! Well, thank you very much.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20- Thank you.- I think we should give her a massive round of applause...

0:09:25 > 0:09:29Today, Gareth faces his hardest task so far -

0:09:29 > 0:09:32teaching Jordan to sing a classical solo.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36To ease his nerves, Gareth's decided not to tell him that this afternoon

0:09:36 > 0:09:39he'll be performing a style of music he hates

0:09:39 > 0:09:41in front of a potentially hostile crowd.

0:09:41 > 0:09:43- Hi, Jordan.- Hi.

0:09:43 > 0:09:45- How are you?- All right.- Yeah?

0:09:45 > 0:09:48- Are you nervous, or...?- A little bit.

0:09:48 > 0:09:5112-year-old Jordan comes from North London

0:09:51 > 0:09:53and lives with his mum and three sisters.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55Football is the love of his life,

0:09:55 > 0:09:58and when he's not following his favourite team, Arsenal,

0:09:58 > 0:10:01he's winning medals for his local club, Croham Manor.

0:10:01 > 0:10:05Jordan loves music, but it's all about rapping in his neighbourhood,

0:10:05 > 0:10:08which means he has zero confidence when it comes to singing.

0:10:08 > 0:10:11# Oh, Danny Boy

0:10:11 > 0:10:15# The pipes, the pipes are calling

0:10:15 > 0:10:21# From glen to glen And down the mountain side... #

0:10:21 > 0:10:24Because of your Stoke Newington accent,

0:10:24 > 0:10:26we get... # Oh, Danny Boy... #

0:10:26 > 0:10:28"dih" pipes, you sing sort of "dih",

0:10:28 > 0:10:31- and you need to hear "the", yeah? - The...- The.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34Gareth has touched on one of the toughest obstacles

0:10:34 > 0:10:37in teaching a cool rapper to sing classical - diction.

0:10:37 > 0:10:40When you're singing a song, it's about being very clear,

0:10:40 > 0:10:44so that every single person can hear every single word.

0:10:44 > 0:10:48It's like you're telling a story, you're not just singing a song.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50- Just read those words out. - "Oh, Danny Boy,

0:10:50 > 0:10:52"the pipes, the pipes are calling."

0:10:52 > 0:10:56That sounded like a shopping list. THEY LAUGH

0:10:56 > 0:10:57When Gareth first met Jordan,

0:10:57 > 0:11:01it was clear that this dude was more used to listening to hip hop

0:11:01 > 0:11:02than singing classical.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05# All I do is hurt you again... #

0:11:05 > 0:11:09- What do your mates think about your singing?- Where I'm from,

0:11:09 > 0:11:13we don't sing, we just, like, listen to rap music and that.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16Since The Big Performance tour began,

0:11:16 > 0:11:18Gareth has been trying to teach Jordan

0:11:18 > 0:11:20to stop rapping and start singing.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22- # It was just a fling before... # - Jordan...- Yeah?

0:11:22 > 0:11:24..you are speaking.

0:11:25 > 0:11:30# Oh, Danny Boy The pipes, the pipes... #

0:11:30 > 0:11:33Jordan's performance is seriously lacking energy,

0:11:33 > 0:11:36so Gareth thinks that football might be the answer.

0:11:36 > 0:11:40..Because I think that singing is very like playing football, yeah?

0:11:40 > 0:11:44Yes? Because there's the ball.

0:11:44 > 0:11:45So you're going to look at the goal,

0:11:45 > 0:11:49- and then what are you going to do with your energy?- Kick the ball?

0:11:49 > 0:11:51You're going to put the energy into the ball,

0:11:51 > 0:11:53- and where's the energy going to go? - In the goal?

0:11:53 > 0:11:55Pow, straight out, yeah?

0:11:55 > 0:11:57That's why it's like football -

0:11:57 > 0:12:00you're taking your breath, your energy,

0:12:00 > 0:12:02and you're sending it out to the crowd.

0:12:02 > 0:12:09# Oh, Danny Boy, the pipes, The pipes are calling... #

0:12:09 > 0:12:11When Gareth said singing was a bit like football,

0:12:11 > 0:12:13I was thinking, "That's weird."

0:12:13 > 0:12:17But when he showed me that you put energy into the football,

0:12:17 > 0:12:20do it to singing, I kind of got it,

0:12:20 > 0:12:24cos it made me sing loud, and so everyone can hear it.

0:12:24 > 0:12:30# 'Tis you must go and I must bide. #

0:12:30 > 0:12:33And he scores! Brilliant!

0:12:39 > 0:12:41Classical music is a refined style

0:12:41 > 0:12:44that requires its performers to have good posture,

0:12:44 > 0:12:47pronunciation and, most importantly, manners,

0:12:47 > 0:12:51something that Gareth feels the group have not yet mastered.

0:12:51 > 0:12:55So far they've perfected the art of ignoring their audience,

0:12:55 > 0:12:56looking bored,

0:12:56 > 0:12:58admiring the floor,

0:12:58 > 0:13:02forgetting to smile,

0:13:02 > 0:13:03and mumbling their words.

0:13:05 > 0:13:09So Gareth has brought in someone to help with this week's style.

0:13:09 > 0:13:13Liz Brewer, who is a professional elocution and etiquette teacher,

0:13:13 > 0:13:16she's going to help you to get the skills you need

0:13:16 > 0:13:17for the performance later on.

0:13:17 > 0:13:21For any classical performer, first impressions are key,

0:13:21 > 0:13:24which is something Liz wants this nervous group to understand.

0:13:24 > 0:13:28I wonder if you could possibly do me the honour

0:13:28 > 0:13:30of standing up one by one,

0:13:30 > 0:13:35and just telling me exactly who you are.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38Hi, I'm Katie and I love animals.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41- That's what I read here. - I've nothing else to say!

0:13:41 > 0:13:44You've ALL got something else to say.

0:13:44 > 0:13:46What do you love about life?

0:13:46 > 0:13:50- I don't know, um... - There must be something.

0:13:52 > 0:13:56- I'm Jordan and I like... - Let's try it again. Sit down.

0:13:56 > 0:13:57ALL LAUGH

0:13:57 > 0:14:00I'm Oli and I'm very scared of standing up in front of

0:14:00 > 0:14:02very upper-class ladies.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04Do you know why you feel nervous?

0:14:04 > 0:14:07- Um...- Because you're thinking about it.

0:14:07 > 0:14:11They're so consumed with being cool and what the other kids think.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13What they've got to do is learn

0:14:13 > 0:14:17to put all those thoughts aside and to be able to talk

0:14:17 > 0:14:19and feel proud of who they are.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22The way you speak is all part and parcel

0:14:22 > 0:14:28to do with how you perform as a classical singer.

0:14:28 > 0:14:31So Liz gets them to chose a topic to talk about

0:14:31 > 0:14:33and asks Gareth to record it.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36Then I went to this other school, my primary school,

0:14:36 > 0:14:37and everybody said I speak posh.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40The group needs to understand how they sound

0:14:40 > 0:14:43when they don't speak properly and don't use clear diction.

0:14:43 > 0:14:45- Good. Shall we play it back to her?- Absolutely.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48"I went to this other school, my primary school,

0:14:48 > 0:14:50"and everybody said I speak posh."

0:14:52 > 0:14:54All the time there's repetition,

0:14:54 > 0:14:57and you speak too fast.

0:14:57 > 0:14:58Four years ago...

0:14:58 > 0:15:02Let's see if this week's soloist can do any better.

0:15:02 > 0:15:04Shall we have a look?

0:15:04 > 0:15:08"In my school I have four buildings,

0:15:08 > 0:15:13"and one of dem, like, was there since,

0:15:13 > 0:15:17"like, maybe 40, 40 years ago."

0:15:17 > 0:15:21What is all this "dem" and do you not...? Can you say "th"?

0:15:21 > 0:15:23He can, he absolutely can.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26What is it about "th" that you don't like?

0:15:26 > 0:15:29- Cos, like... - "Cos, like, cos, like..."

0:15:29 > 0:15:31- Cos...- Because. - CHILDREN LAUGH

0:15:31 > 0:15:33Because... It's not funny.

0:15:33 > 0:15:36- CHILDREN LAUGH - 'I don't normally speak like that,'

0:15:36 > 0:15:39I normally, like, miss out maybe the T,

0:15:39 > 0:15:42and it's, like, really weird,

0:15:42 > 0:15:46cos I've never done anything like speaking like that before.

0:15:46 > 0:15:50I'm not saying that they need to start to speak like Liz.

0:15:50 > 0:15:53What I am saying is that when you're in a performance situation

0:15:53 > 0:15:55you have to act confidently,

0:15:55 > 0:15:57pretend you're the most confident person in the world.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59It's about giving them a life skill.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04But the lesson isn't over yet.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07What Liz was saying was making sense to me,

0:16:07 > 0:16:09but I think that everybody else

0:16:09 > 0:16:12was sort of feeling a bit freaked out by her.

0:16:12 > 0:16:18I talk fast but not like too fast because I can understand myself.

0:16:18 > 0:16:21She's all posh and she talks like this...

0:16:21 > 0:16:24Gareth has brought them to one of London's finest hotels,

0:16:24 > 0:16:28a perfect place to put into practice their newly learned behaviour.

0:16:28 > 0:16:33This afternoon we are going to take tea in a very exclusive hotel,

0:16:33 > 0:16:36and I'm hoping that our behaviour is going to be so refined

0:16:36 > 0:16:40that even the Queen herself would be impressed. Follow me.

0:16:44 > 0:16:47Afternoon tea is a very British tradition,

0:16:47 > 0:16:51usually taken between three and five o'clock in the afternoon,

0:16:51 > 0:16:55consisting of sandwiches, cakes and, of course, tea.

0:16:55 > 0:16:59I am enjoying afternoon tea and thank you all for joining us.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02It also requires manners and best behaviour.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04Isthaque, how are you finding your cake?

0:17:04 > 0:17:08- It's quite nice but I keep on dropping it on my fork.- Oh, OK.

0:17:08 > 0:17:10- So excuse me for that. - You are excused.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13The cake that I had, it had pink icing on the top,

0:17:13 > 0:17:17and it had like little flowery sprinkles on it,

0:17:17 > 0:17:19and it was delicious.

0:17:19 > 0:17:22Having a delightful time is all well and good,

0:17:22 > 0:17:24but there's a more important lesson to learn.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27I would rather like to have one conversation

0:17:27 > 0:17:29involving everybody while we're having tea,

0:17:29 > 0:17:33as that's what one does when one has tea - one has conversation.

0:17:33 > 0:17:36I personally think that our behaviour on stage is disgraceful.

0:17:36 > 0:17:39- Do you?!- We look down at the floor,

0:17:39 > 0:17:43we don't stand up or present ourselves neatly,

0:17:43 > 0:17:45we all look ratty, dirty,

0:17:45 > 0:17:48like someone's just picked us off the street.

0:17:48 > 0:17:52- I think we should try a lot harder, and it's a disgrace.- Yes!

0:17:52 > 0:17:57I completely agree with you. I think "ratty" is maybe a little unfair,

0:17:57 > 0:17:59but it really does make a big difference

0:17:59 > 0:18:02if you think about yourself with respect,

0:18:02 > 0:18:06and especially when you're doing a classical music performance,

0:18:06 > 0:18:10it's as simple as imagining that you would be excellent company

0:18:10 > 0:18:13for the Queen of England, and having that kind of authority

0:18:13 > 0:18:15will really help your performance.

0:18:15 > 0:18:16They did behave beautifully,

0:18:16 > 0:18:20and that's the first time that I've seen them draw themselves upright

0:18:20 > 0:18:24and speak with confidence and take time and listen to each other.

0:18:24 > 0:18:27If they get on stage and they don't sing with clarity

0:18:27 > 0:18:30and with confidence and real poise,

0:18:30 > 0:18:32the performance just simply doesn't work.

0:18:32 > 0:18:36Good. That, I'm afraid, is the end of afternoon tea.

0:18:36 > 0:18:39Thank you very much. Shall we? Off we go.

0:18:43 > 0:18:45With Gareth suitably impressed

0:18:45 > 0:18:48that the group have a handle on classical etiquette,

0:18:48 > 0:18:50there's only one thing left for them to do -

0:18:50 > 0:18:53find out exactly where they'll be performing later.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56They still have no idea where we're performing, and I hope

0:18:56 > 0:18:59they'll be really excited when they see the football arena,

0:18:59 > 0:19:01and not fall to pieces.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05OK, everybody, come with me.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09This is the Madejski Stadium,

0:19:09 > 0:19:10home to football team Reading.

0:19:11 > 0:19:16This afternoon there will be 15,000 people in here

0:19:16 > 0:19:19and you are going to perform in front of them.

0:19:20 > 0:19:22The stadium looks very big, and a bit scary.

0:19:22 > 0:19:242,000 was a struggle for me,

0:19:24 > 0:19:27so I don't know how I'm going to cope in front of 15,000.

0:19:27 > 0:19:31We need to show them that we really, really mean business,

0:19:31 > 0:19:35and we need to sing better than we've ever sung in our entire lives.

0:19:35 > 0:19:39Football crowds more than likely aren't into classical music,

0:19:39 > 0:19:42so I don't think they'll be too happy about us singing.

0:19:42 > 0:19:46I've heard that the fans can be quite hostile at times,

0:19:46 > 0:19:49because they're here to see their match, not to see us sing,

0:19:49 > 0:19:51and they might boo us.

0:19:51 > 0:19:53The group might feel intimidated,

0:19:53 > 0:19:57but all eyes will be on this week's soloist.

0:19:57 > 0:19:59- Jordan...- Yeah?- ..you're the soloist.

0:19:59 > 0:20:01ECHOING: IT'S JUST YOUR VOICE...

0:20:01 > 0:20:03in this massive stadium.

0:20:03 > 0:20:07But before he can let the reality of the challenge ahead sink in,

0:20:07 > 0:20:09Gareth has one more thing for Jordan to do.

0:20:09 > 0:20:12Jordan, everyone who does a solo has to do what?

0:20:12 > 0:20:16- A solo challenge.- That's right, and your solo challenge is in there.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18- Who do you think's in there? - My family?

0:20:18 > 0:20:21It is, it's your entire family.

0:20:21 > 0:20:23How will they react to you singing classical music?

0:20:23 > 0:20:28I think they're going to be shocked, cos I don't sing classical music.

0:20:28 > 0:20:30Jordan never sings in the house at all,

0:20:30 > 0:20:32unless it's one of those pop,

0:20:32 > 0:20:36hip hop, rap musics, and then that's it.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:20:40 > 0:20:42It's just friends over there,

0:20:42 > 0:20:46my mum, my granddad, my nan,

0:20:46 > 0:20:48and my sisters and my auntie.

0:20:48 > 0:20:50It's going to be embarrassing.

0:20:50 > 0:20:55Jordan, stand tall, be a gentleman, make your family proud.

0:20:57 > 0:20:59For Jordan this is huge.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02Not only has he never sung in front of his family before,

0:21:02 > 0:21:07but this style of music is completely out of his comfort zone.

0:21:07 > 0:21:14# Oh, Danny Boy The pipes, the pipes are calling

0:21:14 > 0:21:22# From glen to glen And down the mountain side

0:21:22 > 0:21:29# The summer's gone And all the roses falling

0:21:29 > 0:21:37# 'Tis you, 'tis you must go And I must bide

0:21:37 > 0:21:44# But come ye back When summer's in the meadow

0:21:44 > 0:21:51# Or when the valley's hushed And white with snow

0:21:51 > 0:21:55# 'Tis I'll be here

0:21:55 > 0:22:00# In sunshine or in shadow

0:22:00 > 0:22:04# Oh, Danny Boy, oh, Danny Boy

0:22:04 > 0:22:09# I love you so. #

0:22:16 > 0:22:21I had never, ever dreamed of Jordan singing classical music at all.

0:22:21 > 0:22:25All Jordan's concerned about is football, football,

0:22:25 > 0:22:27football and more football.

0:22:28 > 0:22:31My little sister started crying!

0:22:31 > 0:22:35It was, like, nice that she appreciates me.

0:22:35 > 0:22:38He's come such a long way,

0:22:38 > 0:22:41the boy who raps now singing classical music.

0:22:41 > 0:22:44I'm really proud of him and so is his family,

0:22:44 > 0:22:45which is wonderful.

0:22:45 > 0:22:47SHE CRIES

0:22:50 > 0:22:53With only one hour till kick-off,

0:22:53 > 0:22:56Gareth has some last-minute advice for the group.

0:22:56 > 0:23:00This is a really big and important performance for you.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04I think you need to remember your classical etiquette.

0:23:04 > 0:23:08Remember to stand tall, be really confident,

0:23:08 > 0:23:11be polite to your audience by smiling at them

0:23:11 > 0:23:13and putting on a really good show.

0:23:13 > 0:23:15But most importantly,

0:23:15 > 0:23:18when we do a classical performance we need to look the part.

0:23:18 > 0:23:20So I'm going to go and get into my tails,

0:23:20 > 0:23:23and I've got a little surprise for you, Jordan,

0:23:23 > 0:23:26cos I've got an outfit for you as well.

0:23:26 > 0:23:27CHILDREN LAUGH

0:23:27 > 0:23:30Pick up your bags, I'll see you later. Off you go.

0:23:35 > 0:23:39As the group heads off to get changed, the fans start to arrive.

0:23:42 > 0:23:44I'm thinking of what my family

0:23:44 > 0:23:47said earlier cos they gave me a lot of support

0:23:47 > 0:23:49and they told me to do it and go for it,

0:23:49 > 0:23:50so I'm going to go for it.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58What I'm really scared about

0:23:58 > 0:24:02is that moment when we go out and there's 15,000 people there.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08That's the moment when your stomach drops away,

0:24:08 > 0:24:10you feel sick in your heart.

0:24:13 > 0:24:17If they can pull this off, it will be something...just wonderful.

0:24:20 > 0:24:24What on earth will this potentially hostile crowd

0:24:24 > 0:24:26make of the group's classical performance?

0:24:26 > 0:24:30Will they dish out the kind of abuse usually reserved for referees?

0:24:36 > 0:24:40Can Jordan embrace this unlikely choice of music

0:24:40 > 0:24:41and impress the fans?

0:24:41 > 0:24:44# Oh, Danny boy

0:24:44 > 0:24:49# The pipes, the pipes are calling

0:24:49 > 0:24:56# From glen to glen and down the mountainside

0:24:56 > 0:25:04# The summer's gone and all the roses fallen

0:25:04 > 0:25:12# 'Tis you, 'tis you Must go and I must bide.

0:25:12 > 0:25:19# But come ye back when summer's in the meadows

0:25:19 > 0:25:26# Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow

0:25:26 > 0:25:34# 'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow

0:25:34 > 0:25:38# Oh, Danny boy, oh, Danny boy

0:25:38 > 0:25:44# I love you so. #

0:25:44 > 0:25:47APPLAUSE

0:25:52 > 0:25:55And the north London rapper hits the back of the net.

0:25:55 > 0:25:56Well done!

0:25:56 > 0:25:59Having overcome his initial embarrassment,

0:25:59 > 0:26:02he belted out a classical solo

0:26:02 > 0:26:05in front of a stadium full of football fans.

0:26:05 > 0:26:10We did it! High-fives all round. Really, really, really brilliant.

0:26:10 > 0:26:13Normally when I go to a football stadium,

0:26:13 > 0:26:15I'm either playing or watching a game.

0:26:15 > 0:26:18But to sing at a football stadium was really weird

0:26:18 > 0:26:20and it was also exciting.

0:26:20 > 0:26:22- How are you feeling?- All right. - That was really good.

0:26:22 > 0:26:25The group seem to be taking everything in their stride,

0:26:25 > 0:26:29but remarkably it's Gareth who's really feeling the pressure.

0:26:29 > 0:26:33The tension before that was just unbelievable, in the corridor,

0:26:33 > 0:26:36just thinking, "How is this going to go?

0:26:36 > 0:26:38"What's the reaction going to be like?"

0:26:38 > 0:26:42And the relief afterwards, I am exhausted! But really happy.

0:26:44 > 0:26:45After you, Jordan.

0:26:49 > 0:26:52All of the group have now had their chance to impress Gareth

0:26:52 > 0:26:56and sing their way into the solo spot at Proms In The Park,

0:26:56 > 0:26:58so how does he rate Jordan's chances?

0:26:58 > 0:27:02That, for Jordan, was a mega challenge. Absolutely enormous,

0:27:02 > 0:27:05it was the last solo, but he had the furthest to go.

0:27:05 > 0:27:09I now have to choose someone to do that solo at Proms In The Park.

0:27:09 > 0:27:11I think Jordan's got a high chance.

0:27:11 > 0:27:15Getting the right person for that kind of environment,

0:27:15 > 0:27:17and that song, is absolutely crucial.

0:27:22 > 0:27:26The group is put to the test with an 80-piece orchestra...

0:27:26 > 0:27:30I was like, "OK! This seems much more than I expected!"

0:27:30 > 0:27:34They perform live to 8 million people on national radio...

0:27:34 > 0:27:37- Good morning, children!- Morning!

0:27:37 > 0:27:39You must be extra nervous?

0:27:39 > 0:27:43And Gareth has a very big announcement to make.

0:27:43 > 0:27:49The person who is going to be singing solo at Proms In The Park is...
