0:00:02 > 0:00:04Six inspiring, young singer-songwriters...

0:00:04 > 0:00:05I'm really passionate about song writing.

0:00:05 > 0:00:09Whenever I get back from school, I start to write new songs.

0:00:09 > 0:00:11..and award-winning choirmaster Gareth Malone...

0:00:11 > 0:00:14Ah! Did you feel the difference?

0:00:14 > 0:00:17..team up with the music industry's most influential...

0:00:17 > 0:00:19Really, really deliver those lyrics to the audience.

0:00:19 > 0:00:23..to prepare for a big performance of historical significance.

0:00:23 > 0:00:26Everyone, get under your desks immediately!

0:00:26 > 0:00:29When there was an air raid, they would've probably thought,

0:00:29 > 0:00:30"Am I going to die now?"

0:00:30 > 0:00:33After weeks of fine tuning their musical skills...

0:00:33 > 0:00:35Yeah, I loved it!

0:00:35 > 0:00:37..and building up their World War I knowledge...

0:00:37 > 0:00:40There are big rats in this trench.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43..have any of them written a song worthy of commemorating

0:00:43 > 0:00:45one of the biggest events in history?

0:00:45 > 0:00:48This is something we'll remember the rest of our lives,

0:00:48 > 0:00:50so I just don't want to mess it up.

0:00:52 > 0:00:53Today,

0:00:53 > 0:00:57the kids find final inspiration for their World War I songs...

0:00:57 > 0:01:01- He was 19. - I can't believe he was so young.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03..they make waves on the radio...

0:01:03 > 0:01:06That would be welcome in the Live Lounge any day.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09..and one song is picked for the big performance.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12The song we have chosen is...

0:01:43 > 0:01:46It is the final week at Music Headquarters.

0:01:46 > 0:01:52The six young songwriters are hard at work on their World War I songs.

0:01:52 > 0:01:53In just 24 hours,

0:01:53 > 0:01:55they will each have to perform what they've written,

0:01:55 > 0:02:00and only one of their songs will be chosen for the big performance.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03It would be amazing to know that my song had been chosen

0:02:03 > 0:02:05and I'd be performing it in Belgium.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07It would be fantastic.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10It's the thing I would dream about - my song,

0:02:10 > 0:02:14something I've written, to be represented in such an amazing way.

0:02:14 > 0:02:18One of our songs is going to represent the nation. That's just...

0:02:18 > 0:02:21It's like it's untrue. It's like a dream, really.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24I'm really looking forward to hearing your songs.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27And I know that it is going to be a very difficult decision.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29But I will not be making that decision on my own.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31I'll have two people to help me.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35Judging the songs with Gareth will be two people

0:02:35 > 0:02:36from the music industry.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39The first person who is going to come and join me on the panel,

0:02:39 > 0:02:41making the decision, is...

0:02:43 > 0:02:44Katy B!

0:02:48 > 0:02:51That's right, it's me, Katy B!

0:02:51 > 0:02:54I will be heading to Music HQ later.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56I started writing songs when I was 14,

0:02:56 > 0:03:00and I've been lucky enough to have a number one selling best album.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02So, Katy B is coming to help me make my decision.

0:03:02 > 0:03:03There is one more person,

0:03:03 > 0:03:08and that person is one of the most influential people in music today.

0:03:08 > 0:03:09And they have sent you a message.

0:03:09 > 0:03:13Hi there, I'm Jake Gosling, and I have produced Ed Sheeran

0:03:13 > 0:03:16and Paloma Faith and I've worked with One Direction.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19And I'm coming to hear your songs. So I will see you very soon.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24Jake Gosling co-wrote Ed Sheeran's number one album

0:03:24 > 0:03:27and has produced records for numerous stars.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31He is a man who really knows the technical side of music.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33He is coming to hear your songs.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35In less than 24 hours,

0:03:35 > 0:03:37two of the biggest names in the music industry

0:03:37 > 0:03:39are coming to help me decide

0:03:39 > 0:03:41which song is going to represent the nation.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43There is a lot of pressure.

0:03:43 > 0:03:47To impress me, Gareth and Jake, the kids must get the right

0:03:47 > 0:03:50tone for the World War I commemorative event in Belgium.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55So before they put the finishing touches to their songs,

0:03:55 > 0:03:59Gareth is taking the singers to one last World War I location.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03Brookwood Military Cemetery was the final resting place

0:04:03 > 0:04:06for hundreds of soldiers who fought in the war.

0:04:06 > 0:04:10It's the perfect place for the songwriters to reflect on what

0:04:10 > 0:04:11they have written.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14This is Brookwood Cemetery, which is

0:04:14 > 0:04:17the largest war grave in this country.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20It is perhaps not what you'd expect. I don't know how you feel about it.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22But you can hear the bird songs, the sun's shining,

0:04:22 > 0:04:25the graves are beautifully kept. Immaculate here.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27There is something rather beautiful,

0:04:27 > 0:04:29something rather still about this place.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31Is it what you expected?

0:04:31 > 0:04:36It's quite overwhelming to, like, see all of the graves just lined up.

0:04:36 > 0:04:40This place is kind of like a very big respect cos it is showing them

0:04:40 > 0:04:45that we care so much that we've made this whole place for them.

0:04:45 > 0:04:47It does feel respectful, doesn't it?

0:04:47 > 0:04:50This is your last chance to reflect on your songs.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53So go around, have a look at the graves, have a think about whether

0:04:53 > 0:04:57you have written something that is a fitting tribute to these people.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02Around ten million men were killed fighting in World War I.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07The bloodshed finally came to an end in 1918 when,

0:05:07 > 0:05:11after a series of rattles, the German forces were defeated.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16Thousands of men returned home to Britain as heroes.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20And it was sworn that the soldiers who died on the battlefield

0:05:20 > 0:05:22would never be forgotten.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27It is a sobering place to be,

0:05:27 > 0:05:29but I think it will help everyone

0:05:29 > 0:05:33understand the sacrifice that was made in the First World War.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37It says Ernest Alfred Hadley.

0:05:37 > 0:05:38He was 19.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40I can't believe he was so young.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45That would be like my brother going to war, and that's really weird,

0:05:45 > 0:05:46hearing that.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50- Oh, look, this one was only 15. - Yeah.

0:05:50 > 0:05:56- He's only one year older than you. - I know.- And he went to war and died.

0:05:56 > 0:06:00This boy could've had, like, 60 or maybe even 70 years ahead of him.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02That's really sad.

0:06:02 > 0:06:06To join the British Army, you had to be at least 18 years old.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08But many chose to lie about their age

0:06:08 > 0:06:10so that they could fight for their country.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13He died on the 22nd of October, 1918.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15If he had just survived, like, three weeks,

0:06:15 > 0:06:18then he would have made it to the end of the war.

0:06:18 > 0:06:21The bottom bit says, "A loving son."

0:06:21 > 0:06:26It's really nice that they all have such personal messages behind them.

0:06:26 > 0:06:29For one songwriter, there is

0:06:29 > 0:06:31a headstone of particular significance.

0:06:31 > 0:06:36He has the same name as my great-great-granddad, John Barber.

0:06:36 > 0:06:41- Whoa.- 'Middlesex Regiment, 28th of October, 1918, age 33.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44'Ever remembered by his adoring wife and children.'

0:06:45 > 0:06:47Learning about his relative's role

0:06:47 > 0:06:49in the war made a big impression on Ben.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52That's him. 100 years ago.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55It looks like one of those photos you see in a history lesson.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57And now it's actually, like, real life, that...

0:06:57 > 0:07:00That could've been me, that's my relative.

0:07:01 > 0:07:05Now he has found the grave of a soldier who shares the same name.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08- Do think it is actually him? - I don't know.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10Obviously, I don't know because, like,

0:07:10 > 0:07:12it could just be a huge coincidence.

0:07:12 > 0:07:18In fact, records show that Ben's ancestor was one of the lucky ones.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20Not only did he survive the war,

0:07:20 > 0:07:23but he lived into his 70s and had 13 children.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30When we first came in, I saw a dozen and I thought,

0:07:30 > 0:07:32"Oh, yeah, that's it."

0:07:32 > 0:07:36But there's just endless amounts as you go on into the cemetery.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40Each of them was a different person, had a different life.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42The care that has been put into these grave stones, like,

0:07:42 > 0:07:45they're all carved really well and everything.

0:07:45 > 0:07:49And I think that's the kind of care we need to put into our songs.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53I genuinely think that coming here has changed everything.

0:07:53 > 0:07:57Which song can stand up and represent the nation

0:07:57 > 0:08:00and sum up how we feel that the First World War?

0:08:00 > 0:08:02It's a very big decision.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11Whichever World War I song is chosen will be

0:08:11 > 0:08:15sung by the kids at an international event in front of the royal family.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18So far, the group have only performed at HQ,

0:08:18 > 0:08:21so Gareth wants to help prepare them for the pressure.

0:08:21 > 0:08:26Here we are, this is Broadcasting House, home of BBC Radio One.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28ALL: Whoa!

0:08:28 > 0:08:31Radio One is where some of the biggest names in the music

0:08:31 > 0:08:33industry have performed their hits.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36Hello, good morning. You are listening to BBC Radio One.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38Today, it is the turn of our songwriters.

0:08:38 > 0:08:42They will be performing for superstar DJ Dev Griffin.

0:08:43 > 0:08:45- Hi, Dev.- Hey, what is up, guys?

0:08:45 > 0:08:48Welcome. How's it going? Is it quite exciting to be on Radio One?

0:08:48 > 0:08:49ALL: Yes.

0:08:49 > 0:08:51What kind of people have you had in here?

0:08:51 > 0:08:53What's your coolest people so far?

0:08:53 > 0:08:55Oh, man, we've had everybody.

0:08:55 > 0:08:59Will Ferrell, Ne-Yo... We've had Harry Styles in.

0:08:59 > 0:09:03Anyone who's anybody who makes music or is in film has been

0:09:03 > 0:09:04to Radio One at least once.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06And now it's us.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09They have decided to sing Fly Away,

0:09:09 > 0:09:12an up-beat pop song they wrote for Eliza Doolittle.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15# Everything's gonna be OK

0:09:15 > 0:09:18# It'll get better from here

0:09:18 > 0:09:22# What's the point in worrying

0:09:22 > 0:09:25# It'll be all right

0:09:25 > 0:09:28# Use your wings to fly away

0:09:28 > 0:09:32# Down the path to a better day

0:09:32 > 0:09:35# Shed your worries Spread your wings

0:09:35 > 0:09:39# Out of winter The sunlight springs

0:09:39 > 0:09:41# Out of winter The sunlight springs. #

0:09:44 > 0:09:46Woo! That was really good.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49I tell you what, that would be welcome in the Live Lounge any day.

0:09:49 > 0:09:51That was really good, guys. One thing I did notice,

0:09:51 > 0:09:54though, is that body language is quite important.

0:09:54 > 0:09:56When I stand and I am doing my show in there,

0:09:56 > 0:09:59I'm very much, you know, hands out and about and stuff.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02It just makes me feel like I can maybe project a little bit more.

0:10:02 > 0:10:03If you shy away a little bit,

0:10:03 > 0:10:05if you've got your hands in your pockets,

0:10:05 > 0:10:08it might take away a little bit from the performance, you know?

0:10:08 > 0:10:10You definitely want to stand confidently.

0:10:10 > 0:10:12Do you ever get nervous when you're about to go live on air?

0:10:12 > 0:10:15Every single show, every single time, just before I go on-air,

0:10:15 > 0:10:17I get the butterflies in my stomach a little bit.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20Do you have any advice for dealing with that?

0:10:20 > 0:10:22Well, I would definitely say this to you guys.

0:10:22 > 0:10:24When you perform in front of a crowd,

0:10:24 > 0:10:27most of the people want you to do well.

0:10:27 > 0:10:29Nobody is out there wanting you to fail or wanting you to mess

0:10:29 > 0:10:33up or maybe hit a bum note. Most of the people are rooting for you.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36They're already fans before you've even started.

0:10:36 > 0:10:38It's great feedback from DJ Dev

0:10:38 > 0:10:41and another amazing experience for the young songwriters.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45Well, we've just been the Radio One and met Dev

0:10:45 > 0:10:47and performed a song in front of him.

0:10:47 > 0:10:51And it's like it's just a dream, really.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55I think he was impressed. He did like our song, which was good.

0:10:55 > 0:10:56That was, like, so cool!

0:10:56 > 0:11:00I just want to go back in there and do that again. It's amazing.

0:11:00 > 0:11:02We were right in the room were some of the biggest

0:11:02 > 0:11:04stars in the world have been and performed their own music.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07And I think our song, it stood up.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10They did a good job, they held their own. I'm proud of them.

0:11:16 > 0:11:19To inspire their song writing for the last five weeks,

0:11:19 > 0:11:23the group have been immersed in all aspects of the First World War,

0:11:23 > 0:11:28from life in the trenches to a 1914 school lesson.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30Back at The Big Performance HQ, it is

0:11:30 > 0:11:35the last chance for the young musicians to work on their tracks.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38Soon they will each have to perform their songs,

0:11:38 > 0:11:41and then one will be chosen for the group to sing in Belgium.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44Everyone is making the final tweaks to their songs,

0:11:44 > 0:11:46hoping that that will make the difference.

0:11:46 > 0:11:49I think they've all realised that they really want this.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52I'm really, really, really nervous.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54Probably the most nervous I've ever been.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57I think my song's got quite a good chance.

0:11:57 > 0:11:58Well, I think everybody's has.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00If they call out my name, if my song was chosen,

0:12:00 > 0:12:01I think I'd feel so happy.

0:12:01 > 0:12:05I know, if I mess this one up, I mess the whole thing up.

0:12:05 > 0:12:09And it's not one of those things where I can just start again.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12This is it, this is your final performance,

0:12:12 > 0:12:14where you sing your song that you've worked so hard on.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16You really have put a bit of yourself into those songs,

0:12:16 > 0:12:18which I really appreciate.

0:12:18 > 0:12:20You were all picked because you are great songwriters

0:12:20 > 0:12:24and you are great singers, but I can only take one song.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27I just want each one of you to sing your songs to the best

0:12:27 > 0:12:30of your ability. Good luck, everyone.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32The song for me that is going to

0:12:32 > 0:12:36get it is the song that seems to make history leap out at you

0:12:36 > 0:12:38and make you really feel like you are proud, like,

0:12:38 > 0:12:41you want to respect the soldiers, like, you want to be part of it.

0:12:41 > 0:12:43That's the song I'm looking for.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46To help Gareth make his big decision

0:12:46 > 0:12:49are two guest judges from the music industry.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51The first is me, Katy B.

0:12:51 > 0:12:55I'm hoping to bring my experience as a songwriter to the panel.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57I'd really just like to see someone

0:12:57 > 0:13:01who yet is connected to the lyrics, is connected to

0:13:01 > 0:13:02the performance,

0:13:02 > 0:13:05who kind of isn't worrying too much about what is going on around.

0:13:05 > 0:13:10Joining us at Music HQ is Jake Gosling, a multiplatinum music

0:13:10 > 0:13:13producer who has worked with One Direction and Ed Sheeran.

0:13:13 > 0:13:18When I first heard about this, I was like, "This is a massive challenge."

0:13:18 > 0:13:20So I'm... You now, I feel for them.

0:13:20 > 0:13:24I'm like, "This is going to be quite an incredible thing to hear."

0:13:30 > 0:13:33It's a very tough thing that I'm asking them to do.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36- What makes a good song for you, Katy?- I love to hear a story.

0:13:36 > 0:13:40I love having different parts of the song, like visually,

0:13:40 > 0:13:43someone taking on a journey. I love that.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45Jake, you work with some of the biggest stars in the music

0:13:45 > 0:13:47industry, what makes a song stand out for you?

0:13:47 > 0:13:49For me, it's just all about the connection.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52You've got to have that connection with the audience,

0:13:52 > 0:13:53with the listener.

0:13:53 > 0:13:55- I'm feeling nervous on their behalf now.- Yeah.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57- OK, shall we get the first one in? - Let's do it.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00First up is 12-year-old Sid,

0:14:00 > 0:14:02one of the most creative musicians in the group.

0:14:04 > 0:14:05In the past,

0:14:05 > 0:14:08he has sometimes struggled to take his song writing seriously.

0:14:08 > 0:14:13- Nobody is going to cry? Just Sid. - I'm sorry!- You can't carry on?

0:14:13 > 0:14:15I'm concerned that he can sometimes be a bit silly

0:14:15 > 0:14:17and kind of mess around.

0:14:18 > 0:14:22Will his World War I song have the sincerity we are looking for?

0:14:25 > 0:14:29# I hope you know

0:14:29 > 0:14:31# What they did for us

0:14:31 > 0:14:34# I hope you know

0:14:34 > 0:14:38# And understand

0:14:38 > 0:14:41# So look at us now

0:14:41 > 0:14:44# United by what we faced

0:14:44 > 0:14:47# Just look at how

0:14:47 > 0:14:51# In the end we still embraced

0:14:51 > 0:14:53# They built our future

0:14:55 > 0:14:57# In their time

0:14:57 > 0:15:01# So look at us now

0:15:02 > 0:15:05# And don't let it go to waste

0:15:05 > 0:15:08# Oh, yeah

0:15:08 > 0:15:13# Don't let it go to waste. #

0:15:14 > 0:15:18THEY CHEER

0:15:21 > 0:15:25- Nice, wasn't it? - He's got a beautiful voice.- Yeah.

0:15:25 > 0:15:27My performance went really well

0:15:27 > 0:15:29and I think I really did the song justice.

0:15:29 > 0:15:31It was my best performance so far.

0:15:31 > 0:15:33- Good start.- Great start.- Good.

0:15:33 > 0:15:37Next up, it's one of the most experienced performers, Jasmine.

0:15:37 > 0:15:39When she first met Gareth,

0:15:39 > 0:15:42her knowledge of World War I left a lot to be desired.

0:15:42 > 0:15:47I think it lasted for 37 days.

0:15:47 > 0:15:4837 days?

0:15:48 > 0:15:52- Uh...- No, it didn't, it was four years.- Oh.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55Has she learnt enough to write a song that fits

0:15:55 > 0:15:56the historic occasion?

0:15:58 > 0:16:01# Soldiers fought for us

0:16:02 > 0:16:06# And risked their lives for us

0:16:06 > 0:16:09# And hope was all they had

0:16:09 > 0:16:12# To get by

0:16:12 > 0:16:15# To get by

0:16:15 > 0:16:18# The war ends

0:16:18 > 0:16:19# The peace came

0:16:19 > 0:16:23# And the poppies grow

0:16:23 > 0:16:27# From loudness comes silence

0:16:27 > 0:16:32# Now we'll head home

0:16:32 > 0:16:34# The war ends

0:16:34 > 0:16:36# The peace came

0:16:36 > 0:16:39# And the poppies grow

0:16:40 > 0:16:44# From fighting comes friendship

0:16:44 > 0:16:48# Now we'll head home. #

0:16:51 > 0:16:53- Very nice, yes!- Beautiful.

0:16:55 > 0:16:57I'm really happy with my performance,

0:16:57 > 0:16:59I think it went really well.

0:16:59 > 0:17:01I think it sounded really professional.

0:17:01 > 0:17:03It did sound really pro, yeah.

0:17:03 > 0:17:05It sounded really crafted.

0:17:05 > 0:17:07Facing us next is Molly,

0:17:07 > 0:17:11a classically trained singer with a flawless voice.

0:17:11 > 0:17:15In her past performances, she has struggled to show emotion.

0:17:15 > 0:17:17I think your voice is so lovely.

0:17:17 > 0:17:20- Sometimes I look at you and you look quite serious.- I don't mean to be.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23The thing is, I love singing, but I concentrate

0:17:23 > 0:17:26and I just forget to show it on my face.

0:17:26 > 0:17:30Will her World War I song be moving enough for such an important event?

0:17:33 > 0:17:38# Soldiers marched away

0:17:38 > 0:17:42# Families hoping they would be safe

0:17:42 > 0:17:47# At Flanders Field and the Somme

0:17:47 > 0:17:51# Now the poppies still stand strong

0:17:52 > 0:17:55# Four years went by

0:17:57 > 0:18:01# Flags painting the skies

0:18:01 > 0:18:05# The tears will dry

0:18:05 > 0:18:10# We will stand together

0:18:10 > 0:18:13# Friendship and unity

0:18:13 > 0:18:18# One community

0:18:18 > 0:18:25# We move forward as one. #

0:18:25 > 0:18:27- Yay!- Well done, Molly.

0:18:27 > 0:18:29Yeah, it went quite well.

0:18:29 > 0:18:33I think I could've done better, but I think I did OK.

0:18:33 > 0:18:37- I really liked some of these lyrics a lot.- Yeah, me too.- Really clever.

0:18:37 > 0:18:39Yeah, I thought the same.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42Ben is the next young talent to put his commemorative song to the test.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45He is a charismatic performer,

0:18:45 > 0:18:48but his fidgeting on stage has been a worry to Gareth.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51Ben, you can't seem to stand still for a second. It's just like...

0:18:51 > 0:18:54You've just burnt the bottom of your feet or something.

0:18:54 > 0:18:59Can he keep his composure now when it really counts?

0:18:59 > 0:19:01# Sun or rain, does it matter?

0:19:01 > 0:19:05# They both lead to pain

0:19:05 > 0:19:07# Front or behind, does it matter?

0:19:07 > 0:19:11# There's nowhere to hide

0:19:11 > 0:19:14# Throw your things into that trench

0:19:14 > 0:19:17# And smile your face away

0:19:17 > 0:19:19# Always laugh and never cry

0:19:19 > 0:19:23# And hope today's the day

0:19:23 > 0:19:26# Today's the day that we can say

0:19:26 > 0:19:28# That the war's finally over

0:19:28 > 0:19:31# Today's the day that we will sail

0:19:31 > 0:19:34# Towards the Cliffs of Dover

0:19:34 > 0:19:40# Let's take a moment now just for one thing to remember

0:19:40 > 0:19:43# Serve your duty well

0:19:43 > 0:19:47# And our respect will never end. #

0:19:47 > 0:19:49Great. Really good.

0:19:49 > 0:19:51Feeling so good.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54I just want to do it again and again and again and again and again.

0:19:54 > 0:19:55It was actually so fun.

0:19:55 > 0:19:59- I love that chorus.- Because it kind of had that swing to it.

0:19:59 > 0:20:01Yeah, it's really nice.

0:20:01 > 0:20:05Molly from Huddersfield has an amazingly powerful voice.

0:20:05 > 0:20:09But in front of Conor Maynard, she was one of the singers who

0:20:09 > 0:20:11struggled to remember the words and melody.

0:20:11 > 0:20:14Guys, uh, did that go perfectly?

0:20:14 > 0:20:16It was really awkward, forgetting the words,

0:20:16 > 0:20:20but, um, yeah, I think we did well to carry on.

0:20:21 > 0:20:25If she forgets her lyrics here, her song won't stand a chance.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35# Once there... # Oh, can I start again?

0:20:35 > 0:20:40The nerves have got to Molly. Can she pull it together?

0:20:40 > 0:20:44# Where once was war

0:20:44 > 0:20:47# Now there's peace

0:20:47 > 0:20:50# The battle is over

0:20:50 > 0:20:53# The friendship has won

0:20:53 > 0:20:57# The tides, the mud

0:20:57 > 0:21:03# Now the poppies blossomed path

0:21:06 > 0:21:09# Their lives were taken

0:21:09 > 0:21:12# They fought, they fell

0:21:12 > 0:21:14# Stand up

0:21:14 > 0:21:16# Be proud

0:21:16 > 0:21:19# They were all our heroes

0:21:19 > 0:21:22# The light, the peace

0:21:22 > 0:21:26# We walk ahead as one. #

0:21:26 > 0:21:28Well done, Molly.

0:21:28 > 0:21:32- I love it.- Gutsy performance.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34Because I had to start again,

0:21:34 > 0:21:38I think it went quite badly, to be honest.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41I feel a bit, like, emotional, sort of thing.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43- Yeah, it had the drama to it.- Yeah.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46Last but not least, it is 11-year-old Sam,

0:21:46 > 0:21:49the youngest of the songwriters.

0:21:49 > 0:21:52Learning about World War I has had a big impact on him.

0:21:52 > 0:21:56It's quite sad cos it's, like, the dad writing to his son.

0:21:56 > 0:22:00He doesn't know what it will be like in France when he's fighting.

0:22:00 > 0:22:04But has he been able to turn his experience into a song that

0:22:04 > 0:22:06reflects the time?

0:22:06 > 0:22:10# On French soil now, rifle in hand

0:22:10 > 0:22:14# Fighting for my country

0:22:14 > 0:22:17# My country that I had

0:22:17 > 0:22:20# To leave behind

0:22:23 > 0:22:26# Those who fought in war

0:22:26 > 0:22:32# Shall all come together

0:22:32 > 0:22:35# Soon the war will end

0:22:35 > 0:22:40# And there will be peace in every nation

0:22:41 > 0:22:44# And I hope in time

0:22:44 > 0:22:50# That they will remember the soldiers that fought and fell

0:22:53 > 0:22:55# In the Great War. #

0:22:55 > 0:22:59- Well done.- Yeah!- Well done.

0:23:00 > 0:23:03I really sort of felt like he got into character there.

0:23:03 > 0:23:05- Yeah.- Yeah. Don't you think?

0:23:05 > 0:23:08All of the songwriters have done themselves proud.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10But now it is out of their hands.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13OK, the moment of truth, it's decision time.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16Gareth can only choose one of the six songs for the group to

0:23:16 > 0:23:20perform at the World War I commemoration in Belgium.

0:23:20 > 0:23:21What about this one?

0:23:21 > 0:23:25I really liked parts of it, but just not all of it.

0:23:25 > 0:23:29Definitely the lyric at the end, I felt, didn't quite fit, did it?

0:23:29 > 0:23:30How about him?

0:23:30 > 0:23:33- I just see great potential in him. - Yeah, me too.- Great ability.

0:23:33 > 0:23:35There was a really sort of unusual melody,

0:23:35 > 0:23:37which I thought was really beautiful.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39This is not an easy decision.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42Because I think a lot of the songs had very, very strong elements.

0:23:42 > 0:23:45I do feel a sense of responsibility to choose the right song.

0:23:45 > 0:23:47Is there one song for you that leaps out?

0:23:47 > 0:23:50I'm sort of torn between two.

0:23:50 > 0:23:54- I know what one I like.- Yeah?- Yeah. - You're there. Where are you?

0:23:54 > 0:23:57Do you know what? I am leaning towards this.

0:23:57 > 0:23:59HE SIGHS

0:24:01 > 0:24:03Now it is just a question of making that decision.

0:24:03 > 0:24:07- I've got a feeling this with that whole chorus...- You can feel it?

0:24:07 > 0:24:10- I can feel it. - Yes, I think that's it.

0:24:10 > 0:24:12I think we've made a decision, and I think it is a good decision.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15- Thank you.- Yep. - Good work, team.- Good work.

0:24:15 > 0:24:16OK, come back in.

0:24:17 > 0:24:21Weeks of hard work and now it has all come down to this -

0:24:21 > 0:24:24which song will be representing the nation?

0:24:26 > 0:24:28Firstly, can I say, thank you very much.

0:24:28 > 0:24:30We all really enjoyed the performances

0:24:30 > 0:24:33and I think for all of us it was actually a really difficult decision.

0:24:33 > 0:24:38- Really nice.- Yeah, I was so blown away just by everyone's talent.

0:24:38 > 0:24:41The music in general was really, really,

0:24:41 > 0:24:44really strong and I enjoyed every single performance so much.

0:24:44 > 0:24:48You've gone away, you've written these songs, lyrics, melodies,

0:24:48 > 0:24:51you worked really hard, so well done.

0:24:51 > 0:24:53I felt really proud of you.

0:24:53 > 0:24:56I know where these songs started and I know how far they've come

0:24:56 > 0:24:59and how much crafting and working that it's taken.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01Really pleased. And thank you.

0:25:01 > 0:25:03Right.

0:25:03 > 0:25:04It's crunch time.

0:25:06 > 0:25:08The song we've chosen is...

0:25:16 > 0:25:19..Stand Up Be Proud, by Molly.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22Well done!

0:25:22 > 0:25:25Congratulations, well done. A fantastic song, well done.

0:25:27 > 0:25:31I just can't believe my song is going to represent the nation.

0:25:31 > 0:25:32It's just beyond words.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35I just can't even describe how I'm feeling right now.

0:25:35 > 0:25:40Sometimes you hear a song and you can just imagine it in the occasion,

0:25:40 > 0:25:42and I could really tell that

0:25:42 > 0:25:45when Molly sang that song, that everyone is going to get behind it.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47It's the right decision.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed, but I am also really,

0:25:50 > 0:25:53really pleased for Molly, cos her song really, really deserves it.

0:25:53 > 0:25:57The experience with Gareth and everybody has been amazing.

0:25:57 > 0:26:00It has been the best thing that has ever happened to me.

0:26:00 > 0:26:03Thank you so much!

0:26:03 > 0:26:07I am really excited about the next part of the adventure and I'm

0:26:07 > 0:26:09just glad that we're all going to be able to sing together again.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11Very well done, Molly.

0:26:11 > 0:26:15I think yours just picked it because it's an anthem and it feels really

0:26:15 > 0:26:19strong, and we all had an instinctive emotional reaction to that.

0:26:19 > 0:26:20So very, very well done.

0:26:20 > 0:26:22And of course now, it is no longer just about you,

0:26:22 > 0:26:26it becomes our song, and we're all going to sing it together.

0:26:26 > 0:26:27Very, very exciting.

0:26:27 > 0:26:30Now as a very special treat for all the hard work we've done,

0:26:30 > 0:26:33Katy is going to sing her single Still.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36THEY CHEER

0:26:42 > 0:26:45# You chose the simple life

0:26:45 > 0:26:48# My love was way too much for you

0:26:48 > 0:26:49# To bear

0:26:49 > 0:26:53# And left our world to end right there

0:26:55 > 0:26:58# But I still hear you whispering

0:26:58 > 0:27:00# My name

0:27:00 > 0:27:04# Surely there's a part unchanged

0:27:04 > 0:27:07# How could you be so far away

0:27:07 > 0:27:10# When I still seek your face

0:27:10 > 0:27:15# Like it was only yesterday

0:27:15 > 0:27:18# And although you're out of sight

0:27:18 > 0:27:20# Would you still be the same

0:27:20 > 0:27:23# If I was next to you tonight

0:27:25 > 0:27:28# Still

0:27:28 > 0:27:31# Still on my mind now

0:27:31 > 0:27:33# Still

0:27:33 > 0:27:38# You still know how to make me feel

0:27:38 > 0:27:41# How come these wounds...? #

0:27:41 > 0:27:43'The songwriters have achieved so much,

0:27:43 > 0:27:45'but there is still work to be done.

0:27:45 > 0:27:49'Next time, they perform Molly's song together at the commemoration

0:27:49 > 0:27:52'of one of the biggest events in world history.'

0:27:52 > 0:27:55Having the young generation singing there, singing about the future,

0:27:55 > 0:27:58singing about hope that comes out of such a terrible

0:27:58 > 0:28:00time in our history, I want to get that right.

0:28:00 > 0:28:03So I feel a great responsibility, actually.

0:28:03 > 0:28:06# You're still on my mind now Still. #
