0:00:33 > 0:00:35by millions of people.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38..in front of the royal family and the Prime Minister?

0:00:38 > 0:00:40Break a leg.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43Can they do their own song justice with the world watching?

0:00:43 > 0:00:46If we get it wrong then there's no going back.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48This is their Big Performance.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03just as the soldiers did 100 years ago.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06Looking back on the white cliffs of Dover,

0:01:06 > 0:01:08it kind of feels like we're in their shoes now.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10And the singers step into the spotlight

0:01:10 > 0:01:13for the greatest challenge of their lives.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55Gas, gas, gas!

0:01:55 > 0:01:58..to inspire their song-writing.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01- He was 19. - Can't believe he's so young.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03And last time...

0:02:03 > 0:02:05# Stand tall

0:02:05 > 0:02:06# Be proud... #

0:02:06 > 0:02:08..after a tense final...

0:02:08 > 0:02:11Stand Up, Be Proud, by Molly.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14Molly's song was chosen for the group to perform

0:02:14 > 0:02:16at the commemoration in Belgium.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20I think yours just pipped it because it's an anthem.

0:02:20 > 0:02:24Now they must all come together and get it note perfect

0:02:24 > 0:02:26for their Big Performance.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29OK, everyone, we are going to Jake Gosling's studio.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32He's going to help us rehearse and to record the song

0:02:32 > 0:02:35so we can have a listen back to see how it's sounding.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38# And we danced all night to the best song ever... #

0:02:38 > 0:02:41Jake Gosling is a superstar music producer.

0:02:41 > 0:02:45He was a judge helping to pick Molly's song and has worked with

0:02:45 > 0:02:48pop royalty One Direction and Ed Sheeran.

0:02:48 > 0:02:52It's going to be really cool to be in a professional environment

0:02:52 > 0:02:55where so many amazing songs have been created.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57ALL: # Stand up

0:02:57 > 0:02:59# Be proud... #

0:02:59 > 0:03:01More used to writing pop tracks,

0:03:01 > 0:03:04the singers will need to learn to perform in a very different style.

0:03:04 > 0:03:09# We walk ahead as one. #

0:03:11 > 0:03:15It's not ready. It's not ready.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19At the moment they're singing it like kind of wannabe pop stars.

0:03:19 > 0:03:20# They are... #

0:03:20 > 0:03:24It's horrible. It's got to be very clean, very clear and very simple.

0:03:24 > 0:03:25It's a very...

0:03:25 > 0:03:28very direct message in this song and that's got to come through

0:03:28 > 0:03:30loud and clear.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33This is not about them. It's not "all about me"

0:03:33 > 0:03:38which a lot of singing is. This is about history.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41The group are going to perform in Belgium

0:03:41 > 0:03:44at the Saint Symphorien Cemetery.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47They will be part of a ceremony to mark of 100 years

0:03:47 > 0:03:50since the outbreak of World War I.

0:03:50 > 0:03:54During The Great War, 17 million people lost their lives

0:03:54 > 0:03:57in a conflict that lasted over four years.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00So it's vital that the group's performance is respectful

0:04:00 > 0:04:04and appropriate for the occasion.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06Follow me.

0:04:09 > 0:04:13- Hello, Jake.- Hey. Welcome to Sticky Studios.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16This is definitely a different type of spot.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18It's weird to think so many,

0:04:18 > 0:04:22like, really famous people have been where we're standing.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24We once had One Direction down here

0:04:24 > 0:04:26and all the paps were hiding in the bushes over there.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29I've told them to keep away today, obviously.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33Well, enjoy it. I'll let you guys get on and I'll see you in a bit.

0:04:33 > 0:04:34Right.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37The main thing that we're lacking at the moment

0:04:37 > 0:04:41is the right sort of emotional look in our eyes.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44We've got to make sure that the text, the words that you've come up with

0:04:44 > 0:04:47are really, really clear and we're getting that message across.

0:04:47 > 0:04:52It's 100 years since World War I began and you, the next generation,

0:04:52 > 0:04:55are saying to everyone we should stand up and we're proud

0:04:55 > 0:04:58of everything that those soldiers did for us.

0:04:58 > 0:05:04It feels, like, beyond words to have my song represent this whole nation.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07But I don't think it's really my song - it's all of our song.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09There you go, just plonk yourselves down there.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13The group will be singing live on TV in front of millions of viewers,

0:05:13 > 0:05:17so Gareth needs to be sure that they sound like a commemorative choir

0:05:17 > 0:05:19rather than pop stars.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21And three, four.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23- ALL:- # Stand up

0:05:23 > 0:05:24# Be proud... #

0:05:24 > 0:05:27Yeah, you're "Pr-pr-rah."

0:05:27 > 0:05:28# Stand up

0:05:28 > 0:05:30# Be proud. #

0:05:30 > 0:05:32Really important, Molly, you don't swoop.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35- ALL:- # Every generation

0:05:35 > 0:05:36# Standing... #

0:05:36 > 0:05:38I'm going to stop you one more time.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40It's not every genera-TION.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43It's # EVERY generation... #

0:05:43 > 0:05:46Does the make sense? You've got the emphasis the wrong way round.

0:05:46 > 0:05:50It's # EVERY generation... #

0:05:50 > 0:05:54As the songwriter, Molly sings the first line.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56Hi, come on in. How you doing?

0:05:56 > 0:05:59So it's up to her to set the right tone for the occasion.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01# Where once was war... #

0:06:01 > 0:06:04- Just say to me "where once was war." - Where once was war.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07Say it really clear like I'd never heard it before.

0:06:07 > 0:06:08Where was once war.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11Just explain to me the words, just say them.

0:06:11 > 0:06:12"Where once was war..."

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Where once was war, now there's peace.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17The battle is over, now friendship has come.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20The dirt, the mud, now the poppies blossom.

0:06:20 > 0:06:23Yeah, that's not...explaining it to me.

0:06:23 > 0:06:27- I mean, "Where once was war, now there's PEACE."- Oh, right.

0:06:29 > 0:06:33- # Where once was war... # - Tell me.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36- # Now there's peace... # - Tell me.

0:06:36 > 0:06:40# The battle is over

0:06:40 > 0:06:43# Friendship has come

0:06:43 > 0:06:47# The dirt, the mud

0:06:47 > 0:06:51- # Now the poppies blossom... # - Yes!

0:06:51 > 0:06:53Good. Listen...

0:06:53 > 0:06:56I think...I really get the emotion when you do that.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58Because you're really clearly telling me the words.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00It's a very simple song, this.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02There's a clear message about standing up and being proud.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05And that message has got to come across.

0:07:05 > 0:07:07And if they're just sort of singing for themselves,

0:07:07 > 0:07:10that doesn't make it to the audience.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14But the singers don't seem to have picked up on Gareth's concerns.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17I'm feeling really confident about heading off the Belgium and

0:07:17 > 0:07:20doing our performance because the rehearsals are going really well.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22'We sound pretty good at the moment'

0:07:22 > 0:07:25because we're just working on it, we're absolutely making it perfect.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27Come on in.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29Gareth wants them to hear what he can,

0:07:29 > 0:07:31so it's time to hit the studio.

0:07:31 > 0:07:32Right.

0:07:32 > 0:07:36OK, everyone, you get one chance in Belgium,

0:07:36 > 0:07:39so we're going to have one chance here. Just going to do it once

0:07:39 > 0:07:42and then I want you to come in and have a listen to how you sound.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45So, your first chance to hear yourselves as a group, properly.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47- ALL:- # Stand up

0:07:47 > 0:07:49# Be proud

0:07:49 > 0:07:52# They are all our heroes

0:07:52 > 0:07:54# For light

0:07:54 > 0:07:58# For peace... #

0:08:00 > 0:08:03It's all going well until Molly misses her cue.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06Come in, sit on the sofa, and let's have a listen.

0:08:06 > 0:08:08'# For light

0:08:08 > 0:08:12'# For peace

0:08:12 > 0:08:18'# We walk ahead as one. #'

0:08:18 > 0:08:20Ben, Molly, what did you think?

0:08:20 > 0:08:24well, I think it went well but there's always areas

0:08:24 > 0:08:26for improvement, and there is area for improvement.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28As a whole I think we did really well

0:08:28 > 0:08:32and my little bit that I forgot, I actually totally forgot about it.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34This is what concerns is me

0:08:34 > 0:08:37is everyone seems very cool about this so far

0:08:37 > 0:08:38and everyone's relaxed.

0:08:38 > 0:08:42I keep asking you how you're feeling about it - "Oh, yeah, totally fine."

0:08:42 > 0:08:44"Yeah, it's going to be great."

0:08:44 > 0:08:48And then we get to it and I say, "Right, it's now."

0:08:48 > 0:08:51And that's when it goes wrong. And that's what has to not happen.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54You have to get your head in the game.

0:08:54 > 0:08:56It's just making sure all those details are there.

0:08:56 > 0:09:00Once you've got it and rehearsed and rehearsed it, then you enjoy it,

0:09:00 > 0:09:04you know, and make it that performance that it needs to be,

0:09:04 > 0:09:08- get that emotion across. - It's not as easy as it looks, is it?

0:09:08 > 0:09:10Gareth's been tough on the group

0:09:10 > 0:09:13because he knows how good they can be.

0:09:13 > 0:09:18BEATBOXING

0:09:21 > 0:09:24In order to sound like a choir, they need to look like one.

0:09:24 > 0:09:26'Hello, everyone. I'm so sorry I can't be there

0:09:26 > 0:09:30'but today I'm conducting at the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32'It's not long now till we all go to Belgium

0:09:32 > 0:09:34'and I'm really excited about it.

0:09:34 > 0:09:37'In order to help you get ready I want you to have the right posture,

0:09:37 > 0:09:41'the right attitude. You are going to have...a ballet lesson.'

0:09:41 > 0:09:43ALL TALK OVER EACH OTHER

0:09:45 > 0:09:49The English National Ballet has been training ballerinas

0:09:49 > 0:09:51for almost 65 years.

0:09:51 > 0:09:54So where better for the group to learn some poise, grace and elegance

0:09:54 > 0:09:58than from award-winning dancer, Barry Drummond?

0:10:01 > 0:10:03Gareth mentioned that often you guys look a bit

0:10:03 > 0:10:06more like a pop group which obviously isn't exactly

0:10:06 > 0:10:08appropriate for the performance you're going to be giving.

0:10:08 > 0:10:11Ballet is going to be a really good way for you guys to give

0:10:11 > 0:10:12a more sophisticated performance.

0:10:12 > 0:10:16So if you want to go and get yourselves ready, we'll get started.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21We are going to start with the demi plie.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23Down and up,

0:10:23 > 0:10:25and two.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28I think we all kind of need to make sure we're focused

0:10:28 > 0:10:30and I think ballet might help us with that.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33Very good. Everybody looking straight forward,

0:10:33 > 0:10:34don't look down.

0:10:34 > 0:10:38Keep your shoulders and your hips nice and still, try not to fidget.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41My biggest weakness is probably fidgeting at the moment

0:10:41 > 0:10:44because I always move my ankles

0:10:44 > 0:10:47and fiddle with my shirt or anything so I need to stop doing that.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52Although one of the most confident performers in the group,

0:10:52 > 0:10:56Ben's expressive style has always concerned Gareth.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58I move my hands a lot because I'm a guitar player.

0:10:58 > 0:11:02And I jump around a lot because I used to be in a band.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04But he became more focused

0:11:04 > 0:11:07when learning about the role of his ancestor during the war.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10Finding out about my great great grandfather made me

0:11:10 > 0:11:13feel very proud because, to know that he was helping out in the war,

0:11:13 > 0:11:15I felt more connected to World War I.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20With only days to go until the Big Performance,

0:11:20 > 0:11:24will he be able to keep his cool on the biggest stage of his life?

0:11:24 > 0:11:28I think the hardest thing about the performance will be standing still

0:11:28 > 0:11:30because I will be very nervous.

0:11:30 > 0:11:34Barry has a ballet exercise to help fix his fidgeting.

0:11:34 > 0:11:36We are going to do a balance on one leg,

0:11:36 > 0:11:38but on what's called demi pointe,

0:11:38 > 0:11:41which is basically the balls of your feet.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45Yes, and then take your arms into first position.

0:11:45 > 0:11:46HE SIGHS

0:11:46 > 0:11:47HE LAUGHS

0:11:47 > 0:11:49That's good, that's good.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52As soon as you wobble, you're going to fall over.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55Really, really hold your stomach muscles.

0:11:55 > 0:11:57That's pretty good, that's pretty good.

0:11:57 > 0:12:01The more still that you are, the easier it is to balance.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03Almost. I think it needs a bit of practice

0:12:03 > 0:12:06but I think it's something that is going to be good for you to work on.

0:12:06 > 0:12:07PIANO PLAYS CLASSIC MUSIC

0:12:07 > 0:12:09Step behind, side, front.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11Step behind, side, front.

0:12:15 > 0:12:16MUSIC STOPS

0:12:16 > 0:12:19Well done, guys. That was really, really great.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22I can already see a really massive difference in the way you

0:12:22 > 0:12:24hold yourselves, your posture.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27I'm sure you guys are going to do a really, really great job.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29THEY CHEER

0:12:31 > 0:12:33PIANO PLAYS

0:12:42 > 0:12:43The day has finally arrived,

0:12:43 > 0:12:47the singers are heading to Belgium for their Big Performance.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50But they're minus someone very important.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54Gareth has a prior engagement as he's conducting

0:12:54 > 0:12:58the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall and will be joining them tomorrow.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01- Hello, everyone! ALL:- Hello.

0:13:07 > 0:13:08- ALL:- Yes!

0:13:08 > 0:13:11You're going to have a very important rehearsal.

0:13:11 > 0:13:14That rehearsal is your chance to prove to everyone

0:13:14 > 0:13:15that you can do it.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18Make sure you use that time, you concentrate,

0:13:18 > 0:13:20you take on board everything that everyone says to you,

0:13:20 > 0:13:24and you try your very hardest to react to that.

0:13:24 > 0:13:25Good luck.

0:13:25 > 0:13:26See you later, bye.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28- ALL:- Bye!

0:13:30 > 0:13:32Before this whole experience, if somebody had told me

0:13:32 > 0:13:36I was going to be performing on live TV in front of Royals,

0:13:36 > 0:13:40representing the nation, I wouldn't have believed them.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43Accompanying the group on the next leg of their trip, will be

0:13:43 > 0:13:46Gareth's right hand man, musician Max Cooke.

0:13:46 > 0:13:52# Explosions... #

0:13:52 > 0:13:56He's worked with superstar Leona Lewis and was a key member of

0:13:56 > 0:13:58Ellie Goulding's band for four years,

0:13:58 > 0:14:02touring with her all over the world.

0:14:02 > 0:14:06Having spent years on the road, he knows how important it is

0:14:06 > 0:14:09to practise every chance you get.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13# We walk ahead as one. #

0:14:13 > 0:14:17Just hear that chord going on in your head and sing around it.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23The group have made it to Dover and spirits are high.

0:14:25 > 0:14:27Belgium here we come!

0:14:27 > 0:14:29CHEERING

0:14:32 > 0:14:35I think the kids are all very excited. My one

0:14:35 > 0:14:38concern is that they don't get carried away with that

0:14:38 > 0:14:40and take their eye off the ball.

0:14:42 > 0:14:46But as the mainland disappears from view excitement turns to reflection.

0:14:48 > 0:14:52The kids are reminded of the journey the soldiers took 100 years ago.

0:14:53 > 0:14:58The thought of not coming home - that's it, that's your home,

0:14:58 > 0:15:01you've left that now, now you're going on to the future.

0:15:01 > 0:15:04It's kind of scary to think - what's ahead?

0:15:09 > 0:15:13All of our songs were adding up to leaving and going off to the war

0:15:13 > 0:15:16and actually seeing, looking back on the White Cliffs of Dover

0:15:16 > 0:15:20it kind of feels like we're in their shoes now.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24Molly's thoughts are with her great great grandfather

0:15:24 > 0:15:26who was a despatch rider on the home front.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33I am connected to World War I so I think I'm going to be

0:15:33 > 0:15:36thinking about him while I'm singing the song.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46The group will perform at the unique SaintSymphorien cemetery

0:15:46 > 0:15:47in Belgium.

0:15:47 > 0:15:51It was built by the Germans during World War I as a resting place

0:15:51 > 0:15:54for German and British soldiers killed at the Battle of Mons.

0:15:55 > 0:16:00Over 500 men are buried here, including Private John Parr,

0:16:00 > 0:16:03the first British casualty of the Great War.

0:16:03 > 0:16:06It's the only cemetery to honour men who fell from both

0:16:06 > 0:16:07sides of the conflict.

0:16:13 > 0:16:18Looking round this place this seems like so many people to die.

0:16:18 > 0:16:23Walking on to the site for the first time is overwhelming for everyone.

0:16:23 > 0:16:26I never thought we would be this close to them.

0:16:26 > 0:16:28It's, erm, quite daunting.

0:16:29 > 0:16:32When Jasmine arrived at Big Performance HQ

0:16:32 > 0:16:35she was one of the strongest singers.

0:16:35 > 0:16:38# Want to get out in the world... #

0:16:38 > 0:16:41But no World War I history buff.

0:16:41 > 0:16:45Right back in my auditions I got off to a really bad start with Gareth

0:16:45 > 0:16:48because I said that the war lasted for 37 days.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51- No, it didn't, it was four years.- Oh.

0:16:51 > 0:16:55A spell in the trenches made the reality of the conflict hit home.

0:16:55 > 0:16:58They had to be doing this just for our country.

0:16:58 > 0:17:01I think I've improved a lot in my knowledge

0:17:01 > 0:17:03and it will help me a lot.

0:17:05 > 0:17:08SINGING

0:17:08 > 0:17:11The performance is broadcast live on BBC TV

0:17:11 > 0:17:14so the technical rehearsal is to check sound levels

0:17:14 > 0:17:17and camera angles as well as lighting.

0:17:17 > 0:17:19SINGING

0:17:24 > 0:17:27The group have never experienced anything like it before.

0:17:27 > 0:17:30It's really exciting knowing that there's so much cameras and

0:17:30 > 0:17:32it's going to be broadcast on national TV.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35All of the camera crew, all of... like

0:17:35 > 0:17:39these lighting effects, it makes us feel very important.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43And Max fears it's all a bit distracting.

0:17:43 > 0:17:47I worry that the spark might get lost in, in the frenzy,

0:17:47 > 0:17:51the-the... when they've done it really at their best

0:17:51 > 0:17:54it's, it's moving and it's alive and today was more about -

0:17:54 > 0:17:57"Oh, who can hear what? Where am I supposed to be looking?"

0:17:57 > 0:17:59And, hopefully, things will even out

0:17:59 > 0:18:02and we'll get the best of all of the ways it's been.

0:18:10 > 0:18:11The day has arrived

0:18:11 > 0:18:13and the countdown has begun to the Big Performance.

0:18:15 > 0:18:20In just a few hours my song is going to be heard by millions of people.

0:18:20 > 0:18:21It's just amazing.

0:18:21 > 0:18:25It's live TV, it's going out in loads of different countries.

0:18:25 > 0:18:27Um, so if we get it wrong then there's no going back.
