0:01:01 > 0:01:03Welcome to The Dengineers.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06Today, we're in Orpington to surprise a boy named Ben.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09Ben is massively into survival, so we're going to build him

0:01:09 > 0:01:13an amazing survival theme den in his back garden.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16Oh, this is right up my street. We're talking camp fires,

0:01:16 > 0:01:18nature watching, adventures.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20Oh, oh! Maybe we'll see a lion or a tiger!

0:01:20 > 0:01:22Oh-oh!

0:01:23 > 0:01:25Likes to get carried away, that one!

0:01:29 > 0:01:32Let's meet today's Dengineer.

0:01:32 > 0:01:33I'm Ben.

0:01:33 > 0:01:37I'm 11 and I really need help from the Dengineers.

0:01:37 > 0:01:41Ben lives with his mum Jen, nine-year-old brother Archie,

0:01:41 > 0:01:44seven-year-old sister Millie and dad Neil.

0:01:44 > 0:01:48My dad's a vicar and because of this we've had to move round loads.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51I've lived in seven different houses

0:01:51 > 0:01:53and had to go to four different primary schools.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55This move has been the hardest one,

0:01:55 > 0:01:58cos I've had to leave loads of friends behind.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02I'd love a survival theme den that I could hang out in

0:02:02 > 0:02:04and watch all the nature in my garden.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07It would be brilliant if the Dengineers could come and help me.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10Well, Ben's in luck because the Dengineers are going to come

0:02:10 > 0:02:13and help him and he doesn't even know it yet.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20So right now, we're actually outside Ben's house

0:02:20 > 0:02:23and he's got no idea that me and Lauren are here.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25Nor has he got any idea that the whole Dengineers team's here

0:02:25 > 0:02:30and he hasn't got any idea that he's about to have his dream den made.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33It's so exciting, but he's going to walk right past us.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35I hope we don't get caught.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37(Come on, let's go!)

0:02:37 > 0:02:39'Ben's parents are in on the act.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42'And his dad is going to take Ben out to the shops,

0:02:42 > 0:02:46'so that we can get in the house and get ready for the big surprise.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50'He has no idea that we're hiding just round the corner.'

0:02:50 > 0:02:51He's literally right there.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55They're going, the door's shut.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58They're going now, they're leaving now.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00- Keep down. Keep down. - They're in the car.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03- This way, they've gone. - They've gone.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05- They've gone. - Shall we go and make this happen?

0:03:05 > 0:03:08- Yeah, let's go. - Come on. The coast is clear.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12Let's go over here.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15'With Ben only out for one hour, it's a race against time

0:03:15 > 0:03:19'for the Dengineers to get ready for this survival style surprise!

0:03:19 > 0:03:23'The team need to rig all their secret cameras in the house

0:03:23 > 0:03:25'and guard them...'

0:03:25 > 0:03:26Yeah, there you go, you got the look.

0:03:26 > 0:03:30'..get the crew camoed up and hidden in the bushes.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33'And me and Lauren need to pitch a survival tent

0:03:33 > 0:03:34'in the back garden to hide in.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43'All this is done and finished just seconds before Ben gets home.'

0:03:43 > 0:03:46OK, what did you get?

0:03:46 > 0:03:49'Right, Mum, it's over to you to get Ben out into the garden.'

0:03:49 > 0:03:51- He's coming out the door. - Is he?- Yeah!

0:03:51 > 0:03:56If you just go round there and have a look cos it's around the fence.

0:03:59 > 0:04:00- Hello.- Hello.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02- It's Ben, right?- Yep.- Hello.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05Hello. My name's Lauren. This is Mark.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08- We're from CBBC's The Dengineers. - Really?!

0:04:08 > 0:04:10- How are you doing?- Good.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13We are here to tell you that you, Ben, are going to get to

0:04:13 > 0:04:16- build your very own dream den!- Yes!

0:04:16 > 0:04:18THEY CHEER AND LAUGH

0:04:18 > 0:04:20- How does it make you feel? - Really excited.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22We've been literally hiding hidden cameras in trees.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25The camera crew and the Dengineers have been hiding everywhere.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28- Amazing.- We can't spend too long talking about it

0:04:28 > 0:04:30because we've got a den to build and if you want it to be amazing,

0:04:30 > 0:04:33it won't be easy so shall we get this show on the road?

0:04:33 > 0:04:35- Come on, let's do it!- Yeah. - Yeah?- Let's go.- Come on.

0:04:35 > 0:04:36We'll get you a bandanna!

0:04:36 > 0:04:39I felt so excited when they came out of the tent.

0:04:40 > 0:04:41Hello!

0:04:41 > 0:04:44I am so excited about getting my dream den made!

0:04:44 > 0:04:46Amazing!

0:04:46 > 0:04:49It's just a once in a lifetime chance. It'll just be amazing.

0:04:53 > 0:04:57Our first port of call is the Dengineers' mobile HQ,

0:04:57 > 0:05:01which has some mega cool technology to get this den on track.

0:05:01 > 0:05:02Are you ready?

0:05:02 > 0:05:05This is our chance to find out a bit more about what Ben

0:05:05 > 0:05:08wants his survival theme den to be like.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11So here we are, Ben. Welcome to the Dengineers' mobile HQ.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14In here, we're going to download everything that you've got

0:05:14 > 0:05:19in your mind onto this and work out exactly what you need for your den.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21- Shall we have a little look?- Yep.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24I like this one cos it's all the survival gear.

0:05:24 > 0:05:28Maybe something in the side of a hill here, or, like, underground.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30- Underground, oh! - Something like that.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33So we're talking, like, kind of greens and stuff...

0:05:33 > 0:05:35- Yeah. Yeah, like... - ..because we don't want...

0:05:35 > 0:05:37- ..no people to see, like, what it is!- Yeah.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Or maybe, like, it's coming up from the ground

0:05:40 > 0:05:42where we could watch animals.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45This is actually genuinely proper cool.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48Ben's mood board is all about his den being a camouflaged

0:05:48 > 0:05:52hideout where he can watch the nature in his garden.

0:05:52 > 0:05:57It's a survivalist's dream and we've got just the designer for the job.

0:05:59 > 0:06:03Sege has been in the building biz for 36 years,

0:06:03 > 0:06:07and he's a legend in the den building world.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10Sege knows what Ben wants his survival den to be like and

0:06:10 > 0:06:15if anyone can make his den dreams come true it's this guy.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20What we're going to do, in true survival fashion,

0:06:20 > 0:06:23we're going to dig down and build you a survival pit.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26And what we're going to do is we're going to make it even more

0:06:26 > 0:06:29camouflaged cos we're going to give it a grass roof,

0:06:29 > 0:06:31- a turfed roof, OK?- Ah.

0:06:31 > 0:06:33What we'll also do is we'll give you observation.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36- Rather than windows, we'll give you observation holes.- Yeah.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39- So you can see what's going on at any one time, how's that sound?- Wow!

0:06:39 > 0:06:41It's amazing!

0:06:41 > 0:06:44This is going to be the ultimate survival den.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46It will be tall with hatched windows

0:06:46 > 0:06:49and the roof will be covered in turf.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52The Dengineers will dig down to create the underground bunker and

0:06:52 > 0:06:57the earth from the hole will be used to form a slope going up to the den.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01The inside will be a proper survival haven that Ben can

0:07:01 > 0:07:05use for nature watching and planning his adventures.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08Ben's mum and dad don't own this house, so we've had to get

0:07:08 > 0:07:12special permission from the church to build the den.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15The first thing we have to do is put up a massive screen,

0:07:15 > 0:07:18so that none of Ben's family can see what's happening.

0:07:18 > 0:07:22The fact that we can't see what's going on is exciting

0:07:22 > 0:07:25but it definitely makes me feel nervous.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27Do I trust Ben? Um...

0:07:27 > 0:07:28HE LAUGHS

0:07:28 > 0:07:31He's got tonnes of idea and which one he goes with will be

0:07:31 > 0:07:34fascinating to see how it works out.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39Now it's time to start the build, and Sege has brought

0:07:39 > 0:07:40in some special help.

0:07:42 > 0:07:46These guys are ground workers and, using their digger, are going to

0:07:46 > 0:07:49dig the foundations that will then support the structure

0:07:49 > 0:07:52and dig the hole that will become Ben's underground bunker.

0:07:55 > 0:08:00Even though Ben is only 11 years old, as a special Dengineers treat,

0:08:00 > 0:08:02he's going to get to have a go at operating the digger...

0:08:02 > 0:08:06under Frank's close supervision of course!

0:08:08 > 0:08:11I was quite nervous cos I thought I could press the wrong thing

0:08:11 > 0:08:12and it'll just go straight into the pit.

0:08:12 > 0:08:14There you go!

0:08:14 > 0:08:16You're a natural!

0:08:16 > 0:08:19I can't believe I just drove that digger, it was amazing and working

0:08:19 > 0:08:22with all that machinery and...

0:08:22 > 0:08:24I might want to do that when I'm older!

0:08:24 > 0:08:27- What did you think of that, then? - That was amazing!

0:08:29 > 0:08:32While the rest of the foundations are going down, I thought

0:08:32 > 0:08:35it would be a good opportunity to have a brew and a chat with

0:08:35 > 0:08:39Ben's mum and dad about why this den is so important to Ben.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42So, Mum and Dad, thank you very much for the brew, I thought we'd come in

0:08:42 > 0:08:44and have a little chat in here,

0:08:44 > 0:08:47because you've got quite an interesting job. Tell us about that.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50Well, I'm a vicar, so I'll lead a church

0:08:50 > 0:08:54and so that's why we've moved here as part of the new church.

0:08:54 > 0:08:56And how many times have you moved then,

0:08:56 > 0:08:58cos obviously you have to follow the job?

0:08:58 > 0:09:01- It's about seven houses that he's lived in.- Seven houses!

0:09:01 > 0:09:03That Ben's lived in. We've lived in a few more!

0:09:03 > 0:09:05What kind of effect does that have for Ben?

0:09:05 > 0:09:08It's not ideal, cos you make friends

0:09:08 > 0:09:11and then you have to start again somewhere else,

0:09:11 > 0:09:15so he's made the best of it, but it's a bit of a challenge sometimes.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19Obviously, we're making for him an amazing, amazing den.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21How much do you think he deserves that?

0:09:21 > 0:09:25You feel bad, as parents, you know, uprooting them from good friendships

0:09:25 > 0:09:28and, you know, it's not their job and they've got to follow us around.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31And so it feels so nice to be able to give him

0:09:31 > 0:09:35something really good that is just his!

0:09:36 > 0:09:38This den is clearly going to mean a lot to Ben,

0:09:38 > 0:09:43so it's really important that we make it as good as possible.

0:09:43 > 0:09:45Things are going well so far

0:09:45 > 0:09:49and the Dengineers have started putting up the main structure

0:09:49 > 0:09:53of the den and it seems that Ben is mesmerised by the walls.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55I just thought it would just be plain-like walls,

0:09:55 > 0:09:57but this looks amazing!

0:09:59 > 0:10:01Wow!

0:10:03 > 0:10:07To be honest it's, like, all fitted together exactly.

0:10:07 > 0:10:10These walls are made out of slab wood, which is

0:10:10 > 0:10:14what's cut off the round tree trunk, leaving just the bark.

0:10:14 > 0:10:18And it's often the part of the tree that goes to waste.

0:10:18 > 0:10:19Wow!

0:10:23 > 0:10:27OK, Ben, I can now tell you what this bit is for, shall I?

0:10:27 > 0:10:30- Yeah.- This is a lot of roof as you can clearly see!- Yeah.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33And you've been wondering what's going to happen here, haven't you?

0:10:33 > 0:10:35- And you really want to know what that hole is, surely?- Yeah.

0:10:35 > 0:10:37Well, that hole is a secret escape for you,

0:10:37 > 0:10:39- only you can come out of that hole. - Wow!

0:10:39 > 0:10:42But here's the thing... Because this is where the soil comes in.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44- That's what I was thinking. - You're thinking now.

0:10:44 > 0:10:47- Yep.- So we're going to get all the soil back here...- Yeah.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50..and going to have it all going up this low roof and then we're going

0:10:50 > 0:10:53- to turf it, so it looks like it's embedded into the ground.- Yeah!

0:10:53 > 0:10:56- How cool's that?- Amazing!

0:10:56 > 0:10:59But moving all that soil is a job for tomorrow as it's time

0:10:59 > 0:11:03for the Dengineers to pack up on a busy first day of the build.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06As they seal the den so that it's weatherproof overnight,

0:11:06 > 0:11:09Ben takes some time to take in his new domain.

0:11:10 > 0:11:12My den's looking really good!

0:11:12 > 0:11:15I really like the wood and how it feels

0:11:15 > 0:11:19and I won't be able to sleep tonight cos I'll be, like, so excited

0:11:19 > 0:11:22and waiting to see what's going to happen tomorrow!

0:11:33 > 0:11:37Need to find the right direction home, but no compass to hand?!

0:11:37 > 0:11:39That classic problem!

0:11:39 > 0:11:42Well, now you can fix it with one simple solution.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44It's the paperclip-compass hack.

0:11:44 > 0:11:50It's easy. All you need is a leaf, paperclip and a puddle.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53Take the paperclip, straighten it out, and bend a piece off.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58Ask an adult for help if you're struggling.

0:11:58 > 0:12:02Rub the end of the paperclip against your clothing several times.

0:12:02 > 0:12:06Place the leaf in the puddle, put the paperclip on top, and the end

0:12:06 > 0:12:10you've rubbed will eventually point north.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12Let's see if this works.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16Wow, that's incredible!

0:12:16 > 0:12:18Now, which way back to the den?

0:12:24 > 0:12:27There's still loads to do to the exterior of the den

0:12:27 > 0:12:31and it's going to take a lot of work.

0:12:31 > 0:12:35I am absolutely 100% relying on the whole Dengineers team to make

0:12:35 > 0:12:38sure they get some real hard graft in.

0:12:38 > 0:12:42That's what I'm depending on today.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45The Dengineers need to move two tonnes of earth that was dug

0:12:45 > 0:12:50up from the hole and put it in place, sloping up to the den.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53That's the weight of nearly 25 grown-ups and it's such

0:12:53 > 0:12:58a massive job that even Sege is getting his hands dirty.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01To be quite honest, I felt guilty just watching

0:13:01 > 0:13:04so it's not like me getting my hands dirty.

0:13:04 > 0:13:05I'm not used to it!

0:13:07 > 0:13:08I'm not used to it at all.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11With all the soil in position,

0:13:11 > 0:13:14it needs compressing down so that it doesn't move.

0:13:14 > 0:13:16And there's only one thing for it.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19Come on, then, everybody up, let's do it!

0:13:20 > 0:13:22Wow!

0:13:24 > 0:13:26That's it, jump it down, pat it down.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28Hard as you can, that's it!

0:13:28 > 0:13:31And stop, stop, stop, stop. Why are we the only ones doing it?

0:13:31 > 0:13:34Why aren't any of those doing it, Ben?

0:13:34 > 0:13:35Yeah!

0:13:35 > 0:13:37Even the crew are being forced to help

0:13:37 > 0:13:40and they rarely like to break a sweat.

0:13:40 > 0:13:42Go on, that's it, everybody in!

0:13:42 > 0:13:43Fantastic!

0:13:48 > 0:13:51OK, job well done, chaps. Thank you. Thanks.

0:13:51 > 0:13:53With the soil in place, Ben won't see the den now

0:13:53 > 0:13:57until the big den reveal in a couple of days' time.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03While the rest of the team crack on with the den, I've got

0:14:03 > 0:14:06a really, really nice treat for Ben.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09I've got my friend and his ultimate hero here to give him

0:14:09 > 0:14:12some top survival tips. It's only Mr Steve Backshall.

0:14:12 > 0:14:13- Hello, mate.- Stevie, how are you?

0:14:13 > 0:14:17- Really good. Good to see you again. - Good to see you. Nice to see you.

0:14:17 > 0:14:19Steve is the ultimate nature lover and adventurer

0:14:19 > 0:14:21and he's Ben's number one hero.

0:14:23 > 0:14:25'Whilst Steve hides in the long grass,

0:14:25 > 0:14:28'Ben's got no idea that he's about to meet his idol.'

0:14:28 > 0:14:31- So you're probably wondering why we're here?- Yeah.

0:14:31 > 0:14:34OK, well, we want you to have the best survival den ever,

0:14:34 > 0:14:37so I've got someone who's a friend of mine

0:14:37 > 0:14:41to give you some tips and there's probably no-one better.

0:14:41 > 0:14:42He's somewhere around here.

0:14:42 > 0:14:44Steve, can you come out?!

0:14:46 > 0:14:48HE GASPS

0:14:48 > 0:14:50- Who's that?- Steve Backshall.

0:14:50 > 0:14:51- Steve, meet Ben.- Hello, Ben.

0:14:51 > 0:14:52- Ben meet Steve.- Hello.

0:14:52 > 0:14:55- Nice to meet you. How are you? - Yeah, good.- Fantastic.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58I've been hearing an awful lot about your den, it sounds fantastic.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00Right, Steve, what is the plan?

0:15:00 > 0:15:02So what I'd really like to do, Ben, would be to show you

0:15:02 > 0:15:05the kind of den that I spend most of my life in,

0:15:05 > 0:15:07and hopefully that shall give you some ideas.

0:15:07 > 0:15:11- Are you ready for this?- Yeah. - Come on, let's go into the woods.

0:15:13 > 0:15:15Steve's going to show Ben how he builds a simple den

0:15:15 > 0:15:19that he sleeps in while he's away on expeditions.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22Right, the beauty of the kind of den that I'm going to show you is you

0:15:22 > 0:15:26could put it up just about anywhere, so all I need is two good trees.

0:15:26 > 0:15:28This one and that one will do perfect

0:15:28 > 0:15:30- and I'm going to put a hammock up between the two of them.- Yeah.

0:15:30 > 0:15:32And then a tarpaulin to cover it up.

0:15:32 > 0:15:35So, I want you to do what's called lark's footing it

0:15:35 > 0:15:39around the tree, so that's going to go around the tree,

0:15:39 > 0:15:43and then it's going to feed through that there like that.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46And it'll pull tight and this sling will grip onto the tree.

0:15:46 > 0:15:48- OK.- Can you do that for me?- Yeah.

0:15:48 > 0:15:52Do exactly the same with the three there.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55This is right up Ben's street!

0:15:55 > 0:15:59But Mark's defo not a natural with the knots!

0:16:04 > 0:16:07I'm quite proud of meself!

0:16:07 > 0:16:09Clip that in over there.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12And this onto there.

0:16:12 > 0:16:14- Right, Ben, do you want to climb in? - Yeah.

0:16:14 > 0:16:17I'm always a little bit worried, getting this hammock out

0:16:17 > 0:16:19when I've been on a long jungle trip cos

0:16:19 > 0:16:20I don't know what I'm going to find in it.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23There could easily be a tarantula or a scorpion or something

0:16:23 > 0:16:24- lurking inside!- Wow!

0:16:24 > 0:16:26STEVE LAUGHS

0:16:26 > 0:16:29- So we need a shelter over the top to make sure it doesn't get wet.- Yep.

0:16:29 > 0:16:31That's my next job!

0:16:31 > 0:16:33Right, if you grab that...

0:16:33 > 0:16:36Steve covers the hammock with a sheet of waterproof material.

0:16:38 > 0:16:40And after it's been pegged into the ground using sticks

0:16:40 > 0:16:42from the woods...

0:16:42 > 0:16:43Right...

0:16:43 > 0:16:47..this becomes the perfect place to sleep overnight.

0:16:47 > 0:16:49'But before we head back to our den,

0:16:49 > 0:16:52'Steve's got a few more survival tips for Ben.'

0:16:52 > 0:16:55The important thing to remember is that most animals you're going

0:16:55 > 0:16:58- to want to watch have much better senses than we do.- Yeah!

0:16:58 > 0:17:00So the birds will have better eyesight

0:17:00 > 0:17:03and the mammals will have better senses of smell and hearing.

0:17:03 > 0:17:06So when you're inside, if you want to watch things, you've got to be

0:17:06 > 0:17:08very, very quiet, you've got to make sure that you're not

0:17:08 > 0:17:11wearing really strong aftershave or perfume or anything like that.

0:17:11 > 0:17:13- Yeah.- And even if you're only looking out through

0:17:13 > 0:17:16a very small hole, if you've got your camera or your binoculars or

0:17:16 > 0:17:18- anything like that, don't move it around...- No.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20..because the sun will reflect off the glass

0:17:20 > 0:17:22and the birds will see it and they'll fly away.

0:17:22 > 0:17:25Ben, I think we're ready to continue to build this dream den.

0:17:25 > 0:17:26What do you reckon, Steve?

0:17:26 > 0:17:28I think that there's one last tool that

0:17:28 > 0:17:31every naturalist should have.

0:17:31 > 0:17:33A good pair of binoculars.

0:17:33 > 0:17:37So that is a little present for you to get started on your den.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39- Thank you!- Good luck!

0:17:40 > 0:17:42I'd never dream I would meet Steve Backshall

0:17:42 > 0:17:46and, like, just building a den with him was amazing.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48My jaws aching, I've been smiling so much!

0:17:48 > 0:17:50- And that is some autograph, right?! - Yeah!

0:17:50 > 0:17:52- There you go.- Ah, look at that.

0:18:01 > 0:18:05Back on site, the Dengineers are turfing the roofs of Ben's den.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10This turfing is essential to make sure the den is camouflaged.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14To blend something into nature,

0:18:14 > 0:18:16survivalists have to think about three things.

0:18:18 > 0:18:21One, shape - straight lines and angles should be avoided,

0:18:21 > 0:18:25which is why Sege has designed this gentle slope.

0:18:25 > 0:18:29Two, shine - a few things in nature have a natural shine,

0:18:29 > 0:18:32so the windows will have slab wood shutters rather than glass.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37And three, colour - we're using the same shades of browns

0:18:37 > 0:18:40and greens that are found in this part of the garden.

0:18:42 > 0:18:46And Sege has designed something else to help Ben stay hidden!

0:18:46 > 0:18:47I'm so excited!

0:18:47 > 0:18:50We've just finished installing my favourite bit of kit.

0:18:50 > 0:18:52It's a periscope.

0:18:52 > 0:18:55This will enable him to study the wildlife without frightening

0:18:55 > 0:18:57the animals. Absolutely fantastic!

0:18:57 > 0:19:01With the periscope installed and the exterior now fully camouflaged,

0:19:01 > 0:19:05Ben's den is really starting to come together.

0:19:05 > 0:19:09Sit. Paw. Yeah!

0:19:09 > 0:19:12As Ben has found himself once again in a new house in an area

0:19:12 > 0:19:17where he doesn't know anyone, he's thankful for his best mate Barney.

0:19:17 > 0:19:19Aw, you're so cute.

0:19:19 > 0:19:21Barney is such an important part of Ben's life

0:19:21 > 0:19:26and it is crucial that he's catered for within the den.

0:19:26 > 0:19:29So Sege has designed him his very own den kennel,

0:19:29 > 0:19:33built to the same spec as Ben's survival den.

0:19:33 > 0:19:34It's so cool!

0:19:34 > 0:19:38Oh, Sege, I can't believe it, you've built me my very own den

0:19:38 > 0:19:40- and just the right size, too! - It is actually, isn't it?

0:19:40 > 0:19:44- I should put a little light on there for you as well.- I know, I love it.

0:19:44 > 0:19:46- So we know when you're in and when you're out.- Thanks so much!

0:19:46 > 0:19:50Actually, this is a fantastic little dog kennel for Ben's dog Barney.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53- It's a pretty good dog kennel.- It's a pretty good dog kennel, isn't it?

0:19:53 > 0:19:54Love it!

0:19:54 > 0:19:57Ben hasn't seen Barney's special kennel and it'll be a great

0:19:57 > 0:20:01surprise for him when it comes to the big den reveal.

0:20:01 > 0:20:04And we've got another surprise in the form of an awesome

0:20:04 > 0:20:06upcycle project.

0:20:12 > 0:20:17Sege has gotten hold of an old 1960s kitchen cabinet.

0:20:17 > 0:20:20The owner was going to chuck it, but Sege has got plans to turn it

0:20:20 > 0:20:23into a cool survivalist storage space to go in Ben's den.

0:20:26 > 0:20:29Sege wants the cabinet to be camouflaged so the Dengineers are

0:20:29 > 0:20:33going to paint the whole thing green like the rest of the den interior.

0:20:34 > 0:20:37Then they fix it into position inside the den

0:20:37 > 0:20:41and put some cool rope handles on it.

0:20:41 > 0:20:44Then it just needs some paint touch ups to properly blend it

0:20:44 > 0:20:45into the den.

0:20:46 > 0:20:51And there you have it. From an old 1960s kitchen cabinet

0:20:51 > 0:20:54to a cool survivalist storage and work station.

0:20:56 > 0:20:58While the upcycle project's being installed,

0:20:58 > 0:21:01Lauren's been keeping Ben busy in the kitchen.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04- Ah, look at these.- Oh, wow!

0:21:04 > 0:21:05Urgh, they look so gross. Look at them!

0:21:05 > 0:21:07'To get fully into the survival theme,

0:21:07 > 0:21:10'I've brought some dried edible insects,

0:21:10 > 0:21:12'which we're going to try and get some unsuspecting

0:21:12 > 0:21:14'taste tasters to eat!'

0:21:14 > 0:21:17Which one shall I have, you can choose one for me?

0:21:17 > 0:21:18- You rotter, are you kidding?- No!

0:21:18 > 0:21:21- Are you actually kidding?- No!

0:21:21 > 0:21:22BEN LAUGHS

0:21:22 > 0:21:24That was actually an evil laugh as well,

0:21:24 > 0:21:26did you hear that? "Mwa-ha-ha."

0:21:26 > 0:21:29When survival enthusiasts go on expeditions,

0:21:29 > 0:21:33they often have to eat whatever they can find in order to survive.

0:21:33 > 0:21:35And although they look disgusting,

0:21:35 > 0:21:38insects are a great source of protein.

0:21:38 > 0:21:39One! Go!

0:21:40 > 0:21:42Oh!

0:21:42 > 0:21:44I don't like it!

0:21:45 > 0:21:46Urgh, it's horrid!

0:21:46 > 0:21:49It's dry!

0:21:49 > 0:21:51Very dry! Oh, man!

0:21:51 > 0:21:52Good effort from Lauren there!

0:21:52 > 0:21:54Oh, no!

0:21:54 > 0:21:55Now for Ben's family!

0:21:55 > 0:21:58- ALL:- Dad, Dad, Dad, Dad, Dad, Dad!

0:21:58 > 0:22:01Yeah!

0:22:01 > 0:22:03Oh, urgh!

0:22:03 > 0:22:05Oh, this is grim.

0:22:05 > 0:22:08- ALL:- Mum, Mum, Mum, Mum!

0:22:08 > 0:22:09CHEERING

0:22:09 > 0:22:11LAUGHTER

0:22:11 > 0:22:12Down it goes!

0:22:14 > 0:22:16'And there's one more person who needs one of these

0:22:16 > 0:22:18'not so tasty treats.'

0:22:18 > 0:22:20Sege!

0:22:20 > 0:22:21Yeah?

0:22:21 > 0:22:24- We've got some lovely, delicious bugs for you to eat.- Oh, really?!

0:22:24 > 0:22:26- Yep! Are you going to go for it? - Go on, Sege.

0:22:26 > 0:22:29- I had that one. - You've had this one?

0:22:29 > 0:22:31Yeah, it was really nice. REALLY nice.

0:22:31 > 0:22:35- ALL:- Sege, Sege, Sege, Sege, Sege, Sege!

0:22:37 > 0:22:39Urgh!

0:22:39 > 0:22:40Done it!

0:22:40 > 0:22:42Very well done, Sege. He did well there, didn't he?

0:22:42 > 0:22:45- A round of applause for Sege! - Thank you very much. Thank you.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48'But these guys can't stand around snacking all day.'

0:22:48 > 0:22:49Are you sure?

0:22:51 > 0:22:53'The big den reveal is looming

0:22:53 > 0:22:56'and the Dengineers still have a lot to do.'

0:22:58 > 0:23:01The team is operating at absolute full speed to get this den

0:23:01 > 0:23:02done in time.

0:23:05 > 0:23:06Not good.

0:23:07 > 0:23:09This is really to the wire,

0:23:09 > 0:23:12but a final sweep means Ben's den is good to go!

0:23:25 > 0:23:30'Four days ago this was an empty and neglected corner of Ben's garden.

0:23:30 > 0:23:34'But the Dengineers have succeeded in creating an amazing survival den

0:23:34 > 0:23:37'for Ben and a place for him to call his own

0:23:37 > 0:23:39'after all his moving around.'

0:23:41 > 0:23:43'The slab wood walls,

0:23:43 > 0:23:45'turfed roof

0:23:45 > 0:23:47'and hidden windows and doors

0:23:47 > 0:23:50'make the den camouflaged and hidden in the garden.

0:23:50 > 0:23:56'It looks awesome and Ben can't wait to see it for the first time.'

0:23:56 > 0:23:57I'm so excited to see my den,

0:23:57 > 0:24:01cos, like, I haven't seen it for the past two days, so I'm just,

0:24:01 > 0:24:05like, wondering what they've done to it and I'm just really excited.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08Ben, come and have a look at your den!

0:24:08 > 0:24:11Whoa!

0:24:11 > 0:24:12That's amazing!

0:24:12 > 0:24:14- What do you think?- It's great!

0:24:16 > 0:24:18I didn't think it would be this good.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21I'm really thankful for what the Dengineers have done for me.

0:24:21 > 0:24:23It's just an amazing den in my back garden.

0:24:23 > 0:24:26- Whoa!- What's that?

0:24:26 > 0:24:29A doghouse for Barney.

0:24:29 > 0:24:31- It's amazing.- Barney's den.

0:24:31 > 0:24:35- Ben's den.- Yes!- I didn't see that. - You've got one each.

0:24:35 > 0:24:37'I think the Dengineers have made it better than I wanted it.'

0:24:37 > 0:24:39They've just made it, like, amazing.

0:24:39 > 0:24:43They've made every single detail and they won't miss out anything!

0:24:45 > 0:24:47Whoa!

0:24:47 > 0:24:49That's amazing!

0:24:50 > 0:24:53Oh, I love this. Like, I've got my own bed with camouflage.

0:24:55 > 0:24:57I wonder what this...? Oh, this is like...

0:24:57 > 0:24:59Whoa, this is a periscope.

0:24:59 > 0:25:02'It's going to change my life having a den in my garden'

0:25:02 > 0:25:04cos I'm going to have, like, loads of people round to visit

0:25:04 > 0:25:07and have a go in it and, like, pretend I'm camping

0:25:07 > 0:25:09and out in the wild.

0:25:09 > 0:25:11Oh, that's cosy, that, underneath here.

0:25:11 > 0:25:13Ah, look at this.

0:25:13 > 0:25:15Yes, that's amazing!

0:25:15 > 0:25:17- That is incredible.- Yeah.- Wahoo!

0:25:17 > 0:25:19So cool.

0:25:19 > 0:25:21And look at that!

0:25:21 > 0:25:22- Hello!- Yeah, that's great.

0:25:22 > 0:25:24Stevie B's in the house.

0:25:24 > 0:25:27It was brilliant when I met Steve Backshall because it's just

0:25:27 > 0:25:30like meeting one of your heroes. You never think it's going to happen.

0:25:30 > 0:25:33Oh, look how you close the windows. Look.

0:25:33 > 0:25:35Whoa! That's amazing!

0:25:35 > 0:25:37I really like my den. I like every single part of it.

0:25:37 > 0:25:39What's it like down there?

0:25:39 > 0:25:40It's really good.

0:25:43 > 0:25:45Ben, do you absolutely love that or what?

0:25:45 > 0:25:46Yeah, I love it.

0:25:46 > 0:25:48So what does this mean?

0:25:48 > 0:25:51- This den is done!- Done!- Yes.- Yes.

0:25:51 > 0:25:54'Ben clearly loves the amazing details that Sege has

0:25:54 > 0:25:57'put into the inside of his den.

0:25:57 > 0:25:59'The periscope,

0:25:59 > 0:26:01'upcycled cabinet,

0:26:01 > 0:26:03'and underground bunker have made this

0:26:03 > 0:26:06'the ultimate survivalist's dream.'

0:26:06 > 0:26:10'Ben loves it, but what will his family think?'

0:26:10 > 0:26:11Come and see the den!

0:26:11 > 0:26:13Come on!

0:26:13 > 0:26:15- Oh, my goodness.- Oh, wow!

0:26:15 > 0:26:16Ooh, look at that.

0:26:16 > 0:26:19- What do you think? - It's amazing! Look at it.

0:26:19 > 0:26:21Ben in his den!

0:26:21 > 0:26:24When we walked round the corner and saw the den for the first time,

0:26:24 > 0:26:26I think we just felt a bit overwhelmed.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29- That is brilliant. Wow.- Cor!

0:26:29 > 0:26:31I'm astonished cos it's so good and, like,

0:26:31 > 0:26:34it blends in with our back garden.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36- Amazing. Go on, check it out. - Go on, go and have a look.

0:26:36 > 0:26:38- Get in there.- Go and see it.

0:26:38 > 0:26:41The den is so incredible and it looks so natural with all the trees

0:26:41 > 0:26:45around and stuff. Yeah, it looks as though it's always been there.

0:26:45 > 0:26:46Oh, wow!

0:26:46 > 0:26:49I didn't think it would be that good.

0:26:49 > 0:26:50I thought it would just be normal.

0:26:50 > 0:26:52What's this? Ben, what's this?
