0:00:32 > 0:00:34This den is done!
0:00:38 > 0:00:41Merry Christmas!
0:00:46 > 0:00:47Whoa!
0:00:47 > 0:00:48Who-o-o-a!
0:00:54 > 0:00:56I love the seaside.
0:00:56 > 0:00:58Sun, sea, ice cream.
0:00:58 > 0:01:00- Christmas jumpers!- What?
0:01:00 > 0:01:03That's right, Joe, today I bring glad tidings because we're about to
0:01:03 > 0:01:06surprise a girl who loves all things Christmas.
0:01:06 > 0:01:07Does she...
0:01:07 > 0:01:10# Wish it could be Christmas every day? #
0:01:10 > 0:01:13- Wow, you can actually sing, can't you?- Thanks.
0:01:13 > 0:01:17Actually, she does, and I've heard there's a giant Christmas present around here that we can hide in.
0:01:17 > 0:01:19- Let's go.- Let's find her.
0:01:19 > 0:01:23Today's Dengineer is nine-year-old Astrid from Brighton.
0:01:23 > 0:01:26Please, Dengineers, I love Christmas so much that having it once a year
0:01:26 > 0:01:27just isn't enough.
0:01:30 > 0:01:32Christmas just isn't Christmas
0:01:32 > 0:01:37without snow and it hardly ever snows in Brighton, which is rubbish.
0:01:37 > 0:01:39Where's the snow?
0:01:39 > 0:01:40Being a seaside town,
0:01:40 > 0:01:44we're much more used to heatwaves than freezing cold weather.
0:01:44 > 0:01:49There's less than a 1.5% chance of us getting snow down here and that's
0:01:49 > 0:01:50less than five days a year.
0:01:51 > 0:01:55When it does come along, it's a really magical event for her.
0:01:55 > 0:01:58This white fluffy stuff comes from the sky and suddenly transforms
0:01:58 > 0:02:02everything into what Astrid would call a winter wonderland.
0:02:03 > 0:02:06And Astrid also wants a place to get creative.
0:02:06 > 0:02:09She's really passionate about art and craft,
0:02:09 > 0:02:14and her skills for a girl of her age are really noticeable.
0:02:16 > 0:02:17Please, Dengineers,
0:02:17 > 0:02:19I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
0:02:19 > 0:02:22and you can make my dreams come true.
0:02:22 > 0:02:25Don't worry, Astrid, that's exactly what's going to happen.
0:02:25 > 0:02:27You just don't know it yet.
0:02:27 > 0:02:29So here's how it's going to work.
0:02:29 > 0:02:33Astrid's dad Dave is in on the surprise and he's bringing Astrid
0:02:33 > 0:02:36and the rest of the family down here to Brighton Pier
0:02:36 > 0:02:37for a little after-school surprise.
0:02:37 > 0:02:39Once they're on the pier,
0:02:39 > 0:02:41they're going to come across this massive present,
0:02:41 > 0:02:42which we're going to be in,
0:02:42 > 0:02:45ready to jump out and give Astrid the surprise of her life.
0:02:45 > 0:02:49I am so excited and a little bit nervous.
0:02:50 > 0:02:52The Dengineers team spring into action
0:02:52 > 0:02:56to set up our hiding place and rig the secret cameras.
0:03:00 > 0:03:03With Astrid on the pier, we need to get this surprise wrapped up.
0:03:08 > 0:03:10- I'm nervous.- I'm excited.
0:03:10 > 0:03:13Merry Christmas!
0:03:13 > 0:03:16Oh, my goodness!
0:03:16 > 0:03:19- Hello.- Hello, Astrid.
0:03:19 > 0:03:21Hi. My name is Lauren.
0:03:21 > 0:03:22I'm Joe, hello.
0:03:22 > 0:03:25And we're from CBBC's The Dengineers.
0:03:25 > 0:03:28Astrid, we're here to tell you that we're going to be
0:03:28 > 0:03:32making your dream Christmas-themed den.
0:03:32 > 0:03:34You can have a bit of festive fun every day, Astrid.
0:03:34 > 0:03:38Well done, Astrid. Let's get this den started.
0:03:38 > 0:03:40I'm so excited.
0:03:40 > 0:03:42I had absolutely no idea.
0:03:42 > 0:03:45I never thought the Dengineers were going to come.
0:03:45 > 0:03:49Seeing her get surprised was the best thing ever.
0:03:49 > 0:03:53We've had to keep it a secret for so long and now it's just amazing that
0:03:53 > 0:03:56it's not a secret any more and she's just ecstatic.
0:03:56 > 0:03:58It's straight to The Dengineers Mobile HQ,
0:03:58 > 0:04:00which is ready and waiting,
0:04:00 > 0:04:04packed with technology to bring Astrid's Christmas den to life.
0:04:05 > 0:04:08Astrid, welcome to the Dengineers Mobile HQ.
0:04:08 > 0:04:11It's in here that we're going to take all of those Christmassy ideas
0:04:11 > 0:04:13and start designing your den.
0:04:13 > 0:04:15And remember, mate, it's your den, all right?
0:04:15 > 0:04:19So if you see anything that you want, just grab it and throw it up there. Is that all right?
0:04:19 > 0:04:20Yeah, sounds really cool.
0:04:20 > 0:04:23Well, get stuck in. What pictures do you like the look of?
0:04:23 > 0:04:29Well, I really like this one because snowing is usually what you think of
0:04:29 > 0:04:31when you think of Christmas.
0:04:31 > 0:04:32I like all the blues.
0:04:32 > 0:04:35- Nice.- We like a bit of blue, yeah.
0:04:35 > 0:04:38Have you thought about what you'd like the outside of the den to look like?
0:04:38 > 0:04:40- Oh!- Wow.
0:04:40 > 0:04:42That's like a proper grotto, isn't it?
0:04:42 > 0:04:45- Yeah.- Do you know what, that looks exactly like Lapland,
0:04:45 > 0:04:47where Father Christmas lives.
0:04:47 > 0:04:50Where he actually is all of the time.
0:04:50 > 0:04:53I like the look of this.
0:04:53 > 0:04:55OK, so Christmassy drinks.
0:04:55 > 0:04:57They are the best.
0:04:57 > 0:04:59- Yeah.- Cinnamon.- Yeah, nutmeg.
0:04:59 > 0:05:01Nutmeg, caramel.
0:05:01 > 0:05:03All that stuff, right up my street.
0:05:03 > 0:05:06I'm going to need somewhere to do my art because I love art.
0:05:06 > 0:05:10Keep looking through, see if there's anything else you like.
0:05:10 > 0:05:13I like this and this.
0:05:13 > 0:05:16- Glitter.- You cannot have Christmas without a bit of glitter.
0:05:16 > 0:05:19- Perfect.- The Christmas tree
0:05:19 > 0:05:22because that's where you usually find all your presents.
0:05:22 > 0:05:25Yeah, I mean, you can't have a Christmas den without a Christmas tree.
0:05:25 > 0:05:30I really like this because if you've just been in the snow, you need
0:05:30 > 0:05:32somewhere to get warmer.
0:05:32 > 0:05:35- That will make it look so cosy, won't it?- Yeah.- Very exciting.
0:05:35 > 0:05:37I like this one.
0:05:37 > 0:05:38- Oh.- Wow.
0:05:38 > 0:05:41It kind of looks like where Santa would sit.
0:05:41 > 0:05:43You can't have a Christmas tree without decorations.
0:05:43 > 0:05:46Tinsel! I think it looks incredible.
0:05:46 > 0:05:47There is so much going on,
0:05:47 > 0:05:49we've never done anything like it, have we?
0:05:49 > 0:05:53We've never done anything like this. But Astrid, it's your den.
0:05:53 > 0:05:55Are you completely 100% happy?
0:05:55 > 0:05:57Mm-hmm, definitely.
0:05:57 > 0:05:59Ready to start building?
0:05:59 > 0:06:01- Yes.- Let's do it. - Let's get cracking.- Yes.
0:06:01 > 0:06:05Astrid's mood board says Christmas with a capital C.
0:06:05 > 0:06:09She wants a traditional log cabin with her very own tree.
0:06:09 > 0:06:11There needs to be a cosy fireplace
0:06:11 > 0:06:13where she can curl up with a hot drink
0:06:13 > 0:06:15and somewhere to do her arts and crafts.
0:06:16 > 0:06:20This den is going to jingle all the way, so we need a designer who can
0:06:20 > 0:06:22bring some serious sparkle.
0:06:22 > 0:06:24It's Maral.
0:06:24 > 0:06:27This awesome architect loves a challenge.
0:06:27 > 0:06:29She'll be ho-ho-hoping to impress Astrid
0:06:29 > 0:06:32with a spectacular Christmas creation.
0:06:34 > 0:06:37Are you ready to see your design?
0:06:37 > 0:06:38- There we are.- Wow.
0:06:38 > 0:06:40It looks amazing.
0:06:40 > 0:06:44So I've come up with a little log cabin decorated with everything
0:06:44 > 0:06:47to do with Christmas, so we have kind of deep reds,
0:06:47 > 0:06:50greens and a little bit of brown for the log cabin.
0:06:50 > 0:06:53You can see that the log cabin over here,
0:06:53 > 0:06:57I'm covering it with these pieces of cut logs as if the whole cabin has
0:06:57 > 0:06:59been made out of logs.
0:06:59 > 0:07:03In this corner of the den I propose that you will have a little desk so
0:07:03 > 0:07:05you can do your arts and crafts.
0:07:05 > 0:07:09- That would be amazing.- Do I get a thumbs-up for the design? Can we begin?- Definitely.
0:07:09 > 0:07:12Yes! Let's do it.
0:07:12 > 0:07:16Maral has come up with the ultimate festive fun pad.
0:07:16 > 0:07:18The outside of the den will be built to look
0:07:18 > 0:07:19like a traditional log cabin
0:07:19 > 0:07:22and Father Christmas will even be trying to make an entrance
0:07:22 > 0:07:24via the chimney.
0:07:24 > 0:07:27Inside there will be a cosy fireplace to curl up by
0:07:27 > 0:07:29and an arts and crafts station for Astrid
0:07:29 > 0:07:31to create her very own decorations.
0:07:34 > 0:07:37It's day one and we have arrived with everything needed
0:07:37 > 0:07:40to build Astrid the den of her dreams.
0:07:40 > 0:07:44But before work can begin, there is a very old shed to get rid of.
0:07:44 > 0:07:47And there's nothing the Dengineers love more than a little bit of
0:07:47 > 0:07:49demolition.
0:07:58 > 0:08:02Off to a smashing start, fellas. Keep it up.
0:08:02 > 0:08:04Wa-hey!
0:08:05 > 0:08:06I'm really excited,
0:08:06 > 0:08:08the Dengineers have just arrived
0:08:08 > 0:08:12and hopefully everything will go well with my den.
0:08:12 > 0:08:16As we take over the garden, work can begin on the den.
0:08:22 > 0:08:24Ready for that one?
0:08:24 > 0:08:28So things are well under way here at the den this morning.
0:08:28 > 0:08:30The shed has gone, the base is going down,
0:08:30 > 0:08:34there's all sorts that the team need to crack on with to...
0:08:34 > 0:08:35..today. What is that?
0:08:35 > 0:08:38- What's going on there? Oh, hello. - Hello, there, you all right?
0:08:38 > 0:08:41- Hello, what's your name?- My name's Ross.- Ross, nice to meet you.
0:08:41 > 0:08:42Are you the electrician, Ross?
0:08:42 > 0:08:46- I am the electrician.- You could say there's a Ross-ell in the bushes!
0:08:46 > 0:08:48Do you get it? Do you need a hand with anything?
0:08:48 > 0:08:49Yeah, if you can get down there,
0:08:49 > 0:08:51- I'll pass the cable down to you. - Yeah, sure.
0:08:51 > 0:08:54- There we go.- You got that?
0:08:54 > 0:08:56Yeah. And what's this for, then?
0:08:56 > 0:08:59It's going to feed the den, the electric for the den.
0:08:59 > 0:09:00Oh, I see.
0:09:04 > 0:09:06We've never done a Christmas den before
0:09:06 > 0:09:09and Maral is feeling the pressure.
0:09:09 > 0:09:11Although I'm very excited, I'm a little bit nervous
0:09:11 > 0:09:13because Christmas is very important
0:09:13 > 0:09:15to many kids and many families,
0:09:15 > 0:09:18so it's very important for us to get this right.
0:09:22 > 0:09:23This looks pretty big.
0:09:23 > 0:09:26You've got a history of doing big dens.
0:09:26 > 0:09:29I don't know what you mean! It's big but it's not too big.
0:09:29 > 0:09:31It's still going to feel quite cosy.
0:09:31 > 0:09:33Now that the Dengineers are up and running,
0:09:33 > 0:09:36the time has come to politely ask Astrid's
0:09:36 > 0:09:40mum and dad to get out of their own back garden. I love this bit.
0:09:40 > 0:09:42This is the moment where Astrid gets to kick you out.
0:09:42 > 0:09:45- Oh, my.- Oh, dear.- Do you want to tell them to sling their hook?
0:09:45 > 0:09:47The Dengineers only.
0:09:47 > 0:09:50- OK! Go!- Get out of here!
0:09:50 > 0:09:51See you guys!
0:09:51 > 0:09:53We'll look after it, it'll be fine.
0:09:53 > 0:09:55It's very tempting to peek but having said that,
0:09:55 > 0:09:58we're all up for the surprise, so...
0:09:58 > 0:10:01As much as we do want to take a peek,
0:10:01 > 0:10:04we're happy to wait because we don't want to spoil anything
0:10:04 > 0:10:05for the final day.
0:10:05 > 0:10:10The Dengineers need to get the whole framework of the den up today,
0:10:10 > 0:10:13even the roof, and as it's a big den, it's a big job.
0:10:15 > 0:10:18Yes! Christmas presents, all for me!
0:10:18 > 0:10:20Whoa, whoa.
0:10:20 > 0:10:21What do you mean? Not even one?
0:10:21 > 0:10:22Oh, we're just kidding. Here.
0:10:22 > 0:10:25- This one's for you.- Brilliant! What's it going to be?
0:10:25 > 0:10:26Is it going to be a pair of trainers?
0:10:26 > 0:10:28Maybe it's going to be some kind of tablet.
0:10:28 > 0:10:30Let's have a... What's that?
0:10:30 > 0:10:32- It's a roller.- I suppose you want me to do some painting today,
0:10:32 > 0:10:35- do you, Maral?- You promised you'd help.- Right, then.
0:10:35 > 0:10:36In that case, guys...
0:10:36 > 0:10:38Let's roll! Come on.
0:10:38 > 0:10:40Yeah!
0:10:40 > 0:10:43What are we painting, guys?
0:10:43 > 0:10:46We are painting the decking that's going to go outside of the den.
0:10:46 > 0:10:49We're going to create a veranda which is just like a little porch
0:10:49 > 0:10:51and it's going to be really colourful and festive
0:10:51 > 0:10:54so that's why we're painting it green.
0:10:54 > 0:10:55Actually, it matches my top
0:10:55 > 0:10:57and it's a nice contrast to yours.
0:10:57 > 0:10:59Lauren, I'm not quite sure what you're wearing.
0:10:59 > 0:11:01No, I'm not festive right now.
0:11:01 > 0:11:05I really should have planned ahead and got some kind of gold.
0:11:05 > 0:11:07You should have checked in with us.
0:11:07 > 0:11:08I didn't think this one through.
0:11:08 > 0:11:11To put me in more of a festive mood,
0:11:11 > 0:11:14I'm off to find out why Christmas means so much to Astrid
0:11:14 > 0:11:15from her mum and dad.
0:11:15 > 0:11:18How much does Astrid love Christmas?
0:11:18 > 0:11:20I'd say she's pretty obsessed.
0:11:20 > 0:11:23Yeah, she absolutely loves Christmas.
0:11:23 > 0:11:26Always has. Throughout the year, she's always talking about it.
0:11:26 > 0:11:29So like, I start planning it maybe in October,
0:11:29 > 0:11:30but when does Astrid start planning?
0:11:30 > 0:11:32Oh, early Jan.
0:11:32 > 0:11:34- Early Jan.- He's not joking.
0:11:34 > 0:11:38She loves the tree, to the extent where we have to have two because
0:11:38 > 0:11:41she has her own ideas about decorating the tree,
0:11:41 > 0:11:45which are kind of somewhat different to my ideas about decorating.
0:11:45 > 0:11:47OK, so what would you decorate the tree as?
0:11:47 > 0:11:49It would probably be quite tame.
0:11:49 > 0:11:50So, dainty baubles.
0:11:50 > 0:11:52What would Astrid go for?
0:11:52 > 0:11:55All manner, all manner of decorations.
0:11:55 > 0:11:57Like Christmas has actually thrown up on a tree?
0:11:57 > 0:11:59- Yeah, pretty much.- Tinsel.
0:11:59 > 0:12:02Her version of Christmas involving everything.
0:12:02 > 0:12:04So this is going to be so special for her, then, to have that den?
0:12:04 > 0:12:07- Yeah.- It's like having Christmas Day all the time.
0:12:07 > 0:12:08Yeah.
0:12:08 > 0:12:10Now that the decking boards are dry,
0:12:10 > 0:12:13Astrid takes charge of fitting them to the base.
0:12:17 > 0:12:20The back panels of the den need to go into position.
0:12:20 > 0:12:22It takes a lot of people to lift each one,
0:12:22 > 0:12:24as they are made from solid timber,
0:12:24 > 0:12:27but Astrid is on hand to make sure they go in exactly the right place.
0:12:27 > 0:12:32The framework of the den is shooting up and Astrid's log cabin starts to
0:12:32 > 0:12:36take shape and the Dengineers are drilling for all they are worth.
0:12:43 > 0:12:44Well,
0:12:44 > 0:12:47this looks incredible.
0:12:47 > 0:12:48That is the main frame up.
0:12:48 > 0:12:52- But you guys are here just in time because the front wall is going to go up.- Yeah!
0:12:52 > 0:12:54And you get to see it.
0:12:55 > 0:12:57Three, two, one, here we go.
0:12:58 > 0:13:00Wow!
0:13:00 > 0:13:02- That's awesome.- Pretty cool.
0:13:02 > 0:13:04Yoo-hoo!
0:13:04 > 0:13:06But we have a problem.
0:13:06 > 0:13:10The den is completely open to the elements and rain is on its way.
0:13:10 > 0:13:15So the Dengineers have to go up a gear to make the den watertight.
0:13:17 > 0:13:22As the last roof panel goes into place, the rain arrives,
0:13:22 > 0:13:24which means soggy Dengineers.
0:13:30 > 0:13:32I am very pleased with what we've achieved today.
0:13:32 > 0:13:35The roof wasn't on completely and we needed to put the felt on,
0:13:35 > 0:13:38particularly because the floor on the inside hasn't been stained
0:13:38 > 0:13:41and it's not waterproof so we didn't want to get any damage to it.
0:13:45 > 0:13:48It's day two of the build and the weather
0:13:48 > 0:13:50is really messing the Dengineers about.
0:13:50 > 0:13:54We've just come back this morning and it's been raining overnight,
0:13:54 > 0:13:58nonstop, heavy rain and wind, so everything is damp.
0:13:58 > 0:14:01It's going to affect our workflow this morning quite a lot.
0:14:04 > 0:14:09Does it fit? Oh, hey! We like that.
0:14:12 > 0:14:15To you.
0:14:15 > 0:14:17Things are starting to brighten up for the Dengineers
0:14:17 > 0:14:21and I want to find out more from Maral about her log cabin design.
0:14:21 > 0:14:23Oh, Maral,
0:14:23 > 0:14:24I see you brought me a nice little snack.
0:14:24 > 0:14:26- Thank you.- It's not for eating.
0:14:26 > 0:14:28- Oh.- It's for demonstration purposes.
0:14:28 > 0:14:30OK. Don't touch it. What's it all about?
0:14:30 > 0:14:34So this is very similar to Astrid's Christmas den and one of the main
0:14:34 > 0:14:36features is actually the pitched roof.
0:14:36 > 0:14:37So what's a pitched roof?
0:14:37 > 0:14:39A pitch of the roof, basically,
0:14:39 > 0:14:43is the way we measure the steepness of the slope of the roof,
0:14:43 > 0:14:45so Astrid's den actually has a 30 degree angle,
0:14:45 > 0:14:47which is typical of log cabins.
0:14:47 > 0:14:49So why don't we just use, like, a flat roof?
0:14:49 > 0:14:50It would be easier for all of us,
0:14:50 > 0:14:52wouldn't it, if we just put a flat roof on it, right?
0:14:52 > 0:14:55It would be a lot easier but here's a flat roof.
0:14:55 > 0:14:58- Uh-huh.- If there was a lot of snow falling onto a flat roof,
0:14:58 > 0:15:02it would be a lot of weight to carry and there wouldn't be anywhere for
0:15:02 > 0:15:05the snow to melt or for the water to go to.
0:15:05 > 0:15:06It's just going to sit there right on top.
0:15:06 > 0:15:08It's just going to sit there like this.
0:15:08 > 0:15:10- OK.- And if we add a bit of pressure...
0:15:10 > 0:15:12Oh. So we don't want that.
0:15:12 > 0:15:15The roof just collapses. There is a lot of weight to it.
0:15:15 > 0:15:19With the pitched roof over here, if we have the snow that's falling...
0:15:22 > 0:15:24The gravity will pull it down.
0:15:24 > 0:15:25- It is, isn't it?- Gradually.
0:15:25 > 0:15:28It's just falling really, really softly rather than going through.
0:15:28 > 0:15:30Exactly.
0:15:32 > 0:15:33Maral has designed Astrid
0:15:33 > 0:15:36a traditional log cabin with a pitched roof
0:15:36 > 0:15:38at an angle of 30 degrees.
0:15:38 > 0:15:42This means Astrid's roof is not too steep or too shallow,
0:15:42 > 0:15:45which will allow snow and rain to fall off gently.
0:15:50 > 0:15:54Last night's heavy rain has stopped some of the wood circles
0:15:54 > 0:15:57from sticking properly, so a repair job is needed.
0:15:57 > 0:15:58I'll put some glue on.
0:15:58 > 0:16:02- There we go.- Could you put one there?
0:16:02 > 0:16:04- Yeah.- Perfect.
0:16:04 > 0:16:07There's nothing worse than watching stuff dry so I've set up a very
0:16:07 > 0:16:11special treat for Astrid involving her favourite thing in the world.
0:16:12 > 0:16:14Astrid, nice to see you.
0:16:14 > 0:16:17We know how much you love snow but you can't rely on the British weather.
0:16:17 > 0:16:21So Lauren and the Dengineers thought it would be a good idea for your
0:16:21 > 0:16:22den-day-out for me to dress like this
0:16:22 > 0:16:24and I'll take you for an ice cream.
0:16:24 > 0:16:27I'm called Frosty the Joe-Man.
0:16:27 > 0:16:28- What do you reckon?- Mmm...
0:16:28 > 0:16:31Oh, yeah, you're not into that, I can understand.
0:16:31 > 0:16:35Well, good job we've got something much more exciting planned
0:16:35 > 0:16:37and it all happens in there.
0:16:40 > 0:16:45I've brought Astrid to visit the world leaders in winter special effects.
0:16:45 > 0:16:48They're been working their magic for over 30 years
0:16:48 > 0:16:50on some of Hollywood's biggest films
0:16:50 > 0:16:54including Harry Potter, James Bond, even Star Wars.
0:16:54 > 0:16:57There's "snow" doubt about it, this is going to be brilliant.
0:16:59 > 0:17:00We're meeting Andrew,
0:17:00 > 0:17:02a snow wizard who can create
0:17:02 > 0:17:04all sorts of special effects for the big screen.
0:17:04 > 0:17:06So this is all real snow?
0:17:06 > 0:17:08No. None of this is real.
0:17:08 > 0:17:09It's all artificial.
0:17:09 > 0:17:11If you want it winter, we can make it.
0:17:11 > 0:17:14- Can you make it snow? - Yeah, we can make it snow.
0:17:14 > 0:17:16How about that?
0:17:16 > 0:17:20- What?- Whoa! This is just like real life!- It's amazing.
0:17:20 > 0:17:22And not even chilly!
0:17:22 > 0:17:24Look.
0:17:24 > 0:17:27It's just bubbles and they just disappear after a while.
0:17:27 > 0:17:29Wow.
0:17:29 > 0:17:34Foam is just one of over 100 different types of artificial snow and ice made here
0:17:34 > 0:17:38and they use all sorts of materials, including paper, wax,
0:17:38 > 0:17:40biotextiles and plastics.
0:17:40 > 0:17:42I'm going to show you something really cool.
0:17:42 > 0:17:47Polymer snow. We just put this dry powder inside of here, add the water
0:17:48 > 0:17:51and it starts to become snow.
0:17:51 > 0:17:54- Look at that.- Wow, that's amazing.
0:17:54 > 0:17:56Oh, it feels great.
0:17:56 > 0:17:58- It feels amazing.- Oh, yeah.
0:17:58 > 0:18:00Chuck a bit of snow sparkle on that.
0:18:00 > 0:18:01Exactly, I think a bit of ice sparkle,
0:18:01 > 0:18:03a bit of snow sparkle on the top.
0:18:03 > 0:18:05We've got Christmas on our hands.
0:18:06 > 0:18:09Dressing snow on movie sets is a skilled job
0:18:09 > 0:18:12and Andrew shows us how to give trees the wow factor.
0:18:12 > 0:18:14- Go on.- Hold it upwards.
0:18:14 > 0:18:16Here you go, mate.
0:18:16 > 0:18:18Bring it this way a little bit.
0:18:18 > 0:18:21And you sort of aim it up so it comes down like real snow?
0:18:21 > 0:18:24Yeah, we want it to be as natural as we can make it.
0:18:24 > 0:18:26You're doing a great job there, Astrid.
0:18:26 > 0:18:27And that's just paper?
0:18:27 > 0:18:29Just paper and water. Look.
0:18:31 > 0:18:33So we can make snowballs with it if we want to.
0:18:35 > 0:18:38This type of snow is safe to use in outdoor locations because it's
0:18:38 > 0:18:43biodegradable and it can be easily cleared up using air blowers or water hoses.
0:18:43 > 0:18:46Would you like to work as a snow technician?
0:18:46 > 0:18:48Yeah, probably.
0:18:48 > 0:18:51Covering a tree is one thing but what happens when you need to cover
0:18:51 > 0:18:53a space the size of a football pitch?
0:18:53 > 0:18:55You bring out the big boys.
0:19:00 > 0:19:04If we want to do falling snow, big style like they do in the movies,
0:19:04 > 0:19:06then this is what we use.
0:19:06 > 0:19:09Look, they're so big, those cannons.
0:19:09 > 0:19:12This is the biggest effect we can do for falling snow.
0:19:12 > 0:19:14Wow. I'm not going to lie,
0:19:14 > 0:19:17I think this might be the best thing that's ever happened.
0:19:17 > 0:19:22I've had a brilliant time and I love snow and this place has more snow
0:19:22 > 0:19:24than I could ever imagine.
0:19:24 > 0:19:27She's snow mad. Could leave her there all day. She wouldn't mind.
0:19:27 > 0:19:29Don't think she'd notice.
0:19:33 > 0:19:37It's "snow joke" building dens, and Dengineer David has a confession to make.
0:19:37 > 0:19:40We couldn't get enough cladding for the inside,
0:19:40 > 0:19:43so we've managed to cover the whole building, but not the interiors.
0:19:43 > 0:19:45- I'll get on it.- OK?
0:19:45 > 0:19:46Thank you.
0:19:46 > 0:19:50Log cladding is the material that Maral's using to cover the den
0:19:50 > 0:19:54inside and out, and extra is needed to finish the inside.
0:19:55 > 0:19:56So while the Dengineers wait for a delivery,
0:19:56 > 0:19:59it's all hands on deck to get the outside painted.
0:20:07 > 0:20:10Finally, it's arrived.
0:20:10 > 0:20:15But the holdup means that the team are under pressure to get the inside
0:20:15 > 0:20:17of the den finished before the end of the day.
0:20:21 > 0:20:23The Dengineers are on it,
0:20:23 > 0:20:26I have no doubt that we will finish on time.
0:20:26 > 0:20:30The last pieces of cladding go into place and after a quick sweep around,
0:20:30 > 0:20:32the inside of the den's ready for tomorrow.
0:20:32 > 0:20:34Bring on the decorations.
0:20:34 > 0:20:36Look at that beauty.
0:20:36 > 0:20:38- Beautiful floor, isn't it? - Yeah!
0:20:46 > 0:20:50It's day three of the build and today the Dengineers officially
0:20:50 > 0:20:52bring Christmas to Astrid's den.
0:20:52 > 0:20:55It's all about the details.
0:20:55 > 0:20:57Maral's adding a snow-covered top to the porch,
0:20:57 > 0:21:00and a stone effect wallpaper on the fireplace.
0:21:00 > 0:21:05From now on, Astrid won't be able to see her den until the big reveal,
0:21:05 > 0:21:07but that doesn't mean she can put her feet up,
0:21:07 > 0:21:10as Maral's keen to put her art and craft skills to good use.
0:21:15 > 0:21:18Astrid, I've got an idea for an upcycle with this piece of plywood
0:21:18 > 0:21:20that is a bit left over from the den.
0:21:20 > 0:21:23So we're going to paint it gold with this really nice gold paint that we
0:21:23 > 0:21:27have here, and then we're going to stick these cardboard tubes that I've
0:21:27 > 0:21:29painted white into a shape of a Christmas tree.
0:21:29 > 0:21:33- Cool.- And all of these are going to be little storage
0:21:33 > 0:21:35for all your arts and craft stuff.
0:21:35 > 0:21:37Cool.
0:21:37 > 0:21:39It's a really pretty colour.
0:21:39 > 0:21:42- Quite Christmassy?- Yeah, it's really festive.
0:21:45 > 0:21:48Right, let's bring it over, and just do the edge.
0:21:48 > 0:21:50Only a little bit, doesn't need much.
0:21:50 > 0:21:53Astrid helps Maral create a Christmas tree shape
0:21:53 > 0:21:55with the painted tubes.
0:21:55 > 0:21:57Put some of these small ones in between.
0:21:57 > 0:22:00Yeah, I'm pleased with that.
0:22:00 > 0:22:01Should we stick them down? Great.
0:22:05 > 0:22:08Great, if you just stick one last piece.
0:22:08 > 0:22:09Perfect.
0:22:09 > 0:22:12Just like Father Christmas and his elves,
0:22:12 > 0:22:15Maral puts the whole team to work, painting the den.
0:22:15 > 0:22:18And it's all worth the effort as Maral and Astrid
0:22:18 > 0:22:20have got a treat for the Dengineers.
0:22:20 > 0:22:22Everyone, you've done so great today,
0:22:22 > 0:22:24I think you deserve some Christmas lunch.
0:22:24 > 0:22:27ALL: Here, here.
0:22:30 > 0:22:32ALL: Merry Christmas!
0:22:32 > 0:22:34- Hey!- Hey!
0:22:36 > 0:22:38After a well-deserved rest,
0:22:38 > 0:22:41Dengineer David's found something blocking the chimney...
0:22:42 > 0:22:45..and those boots aren't moving anytime soon.
0:22:45 > 0:22:49One of my favourite things at Christmas is putting up the decorations
0:22:49 > 0:22:52and Maral has got shedloads of them.
0:22:52 > 0:22:55We've got a Christmas tree on the door.
0:22:55 > 0:23:01- What more could you want? - All the noise the Dengineers have been making,
0:23:01 > 0:23:03I think they've worked really hard today.
0:23:03 > 0:23:07I am really excited to see what it looks like.
0:23:07 > 0:23:08Today has gone so well.
0:23:08 > 0:23:12We have had the weather on our side and we've had all the team here
0:23:12 > 0:23:14helping out. So it has gone really, really well.
0:23:14 > 0:23:17I can't wait to see Astrid's face tomorrow when she sees her den for
0:23:17 > 0:23:20the first time with all the trimmings.
0:23:20 > 0:23:23'Twas the night before Christmas...
0:23:23 > 0:23:25I mean, the night before the big reveal.
0:23:25 > 0:23:28And there is just one more sleep until Astrid sees her finished den
0:23:28 > 0:23:30for the very first time.
0:23:34 > 0:23:37It's finally here, the day of the big reveal,
0:23:37 > 0:23:38and in just a matter of hours,
0:23:38 > 0:23:41Astrid is going to get to see her Christmas den for the first time.
0:23:41 > 0:23:45Yeah, and we have got a surprise lined up that's going to make all of
0:23:45 > 0:23:47her dreams come true - we're going to make it snow.
0:23:47 > 0:23:49We're actually going to make it snow!
0:23:49 > 0:23:52Yeah, we are. But before the special effects team arrives,
0:23:52 > 0:23:53there is still loads to do.
0:23:55 > 0:23:56- Wow.- It's Christmas!
0:23:57 > 0:23:59- It's Christmas.- This is amazing.
0:23:59 > 0:24:01Shh! She doesn't know yet.
0:24:01 > 0:24:02It's so good.
0:24:02 > 0:24:05- Do you want to come and see inside? - Yes! Let's have a look.
0:24:05 > 0:24:08- It looks incredible! - Actually magical.
0:24:08 > 0:24:10- It's quite Christmassy, isn't it? - Oh!- We've gone all out.
0:24:10 > 0:24:14Maral, the detail on this is incredible.
0:24:14 > 0:24:16- Yeah.- I don't know how you've done it.- I'm glad you like it.
0:24:16 > 0:24:18- I love this.- She's melted chocolate.
0:24:18 > 0:24:20It's actually melting right now.
0:24:20 > 0:24:21I'm so happy. Can I do it?
0:24:21 > 0:24:23Yeah, yeah. Not all of it, though.
0:24:24 > 0:24:25Argh!
0:24:25 > 0:24:27Oh, no.
0:24:29 > 0:24:32Hot! It's hot.
0:24:32 > 0:24:33There is one last present for the den -
0:24:33 > 0:24:37a show-stopping miniature log cabin in gingerbread
0:24:37 > 0:24:40- from local cake-maker, Faye. - That's amazing.
0:24:40 > 0:24:42It looks just like the den.
0:24:42 > 0:24:45Now that the finishing touches are in place,
0:24:45 > 0:24:49the "elf 'n' safety" officer has turned up to inspect the den.
0:24:49 > 0:24:53- Santa will be pleased.- Fingers crossed he gives it the thumbs-up.
0:24:53 > 0:24:54Jingle jangle, look at them dangle.
0:24:54 > 0:24:56Ah. Measure here. Hey-hey!
0:25:00 > 0:25:03All that's left to do now is make it snow, make it snow,
0:25:03 > 0:25:05make it snow.
0:25:08 > 0:25:10Are you ready to have a go?
0:25:10 > 0:25:13- I'm up, I'm up.- So as soon as you do that, the snow will come on.
0:25:13 > 0:25:16When you go like this, they'll kill the snow.
0:25:16 > 0:25:17Got it! Snow!
0:25:17 > 0:25:20Yes! Look at that!
0:25:20 > 0:25:21Give me more snow!
0:25:23 > 0:25:25Don't do my side!
0:25:25 > 0:25:28- Look at me!- Kill the snow!
0:25:28 > 0:25:30No! Don't!
0:25:30 > 0:25:33As the final few snowflakes fall into place,
0:25:33 > 0:25:37Astrid still has no idea it's going to snow for the reveal of her
0:25:37 > 0:25:39Christmas den.
0:25:46 > 0:25:52Astrid wanted a den where it's Christmas 365 days a year and the
0:25:52 > 0:25:54Dengineers have created just that.
0:25:54 > 0:25:56Where the old garden shed and wall once stood,
0:25:56 > 0:25:59there is now a beautiful log cabin.
0:25:59 > 0:26:02Astrid has got a cosy fireplace to curl up by,
0:26:02 > 0:26:06space to do her arts and crafts, and a snack station for treats.
0:26:06 > 0:26:10But will she be blown away with her den and the fact it's snowing in her
0:26:10 > 0:26:12own back garden?
0:26:15 > 0:26:17Look at this!
0:26:17 > 0:26:20- It's amazing.- Is everybody ready to see the den?
0:26:20 > 0:26:27- ALL:- Yes!- Let's count down. Five, four, three, two, one!
0:26:27 > 0:26:29MERRY CHRISTMAS!
0:26:29 > 0:26:32Oh, my goodness.
0:26:32 > 0:26:33What do you think?
0:26:33 > 0:26:35It's amazing.
0:26:35 > 0:26:37Do you think Maral has done a good job?
0:26:37 > 0:26:39- Definitely.- I'm glad you like it.
0:26:39 > 0:26:41It's amazing, isn't it?
0:26:41 > 0:26:43You haven't seen nothing yet, wait till you get inside.
0:26:43 > 0:26:46- Do you want to have a look? - Shall we go for it?
0:26:46 > 0:26:48Wow. That is so cool.
0:26:48 > 0:26:50- What do you think?- Do you like it?
