0:01:40 > 0:01:45- Hi, I'm Rehab.- And I'm Adam.- Today, we're going to be lock-keepers.

0:01:45 > 0:01:46- BOTH:- Let's go!

0:01:46 > 0:01:50This is the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

0:01:50 > 0:01:56When a boat needs to go up or downhill, along a canal or a river,

0:01:56 > 0:01:58a lock is used to help them.

0:01:58 > 0:02:02On each side of the lock, there are gates that let the water get

0:02:02 > 0:02:06in or out, which helps the boats go up and down.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09And the lock-keeper looks after the canals.

0:02:09 > 0:02:13They welcome and help boaters travel along them.

0:02:13 > 0:02:17Darren will be showing us what we need to do.

0:02:17 > 0:02:21We need to listen very carefully, so that we stay safe.

0:02:21 > 0:02:26Would you like to go to the locks so you're nice and safe?

0:02:26 > 0:02:28I'd love to, and are you going to help?

0:02:28 > 0:02:29Yes.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35So, we're going to open this ground paddle,

0:02:35 > 0:02:39which allows the water to come out underneath the boats,

0:02:39 > 0:02:41and raises them slowly and gently -

0:02:41 > 0:02:45- and safely, which is the main thing. - Do the boats come up fast?

0:02:45 > 0:02:48Not if we do it nice and gently, just nice and steady

0:02:48 > 0:02:51and make sure they don't get banged about.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53Darren is turning the paddle.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57First, we set the water levels just right.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59So, we just do three turns.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01Put our safety hook on,

0:03:01 > 0:03:04and then have a look and make sure there's not much going in.

0:03:04 > 0:03:08Cos if you put it in too quickly and bash them about,

0:03:08 > 0:03:10they start going, "Don't bash me about!"

0:03:12 > 0:03:14Oh! Shall I help you?

0:03:14 > 0:03:16- No!- Sorry!

0:03:16 > 0:03:20'We open the gates for the boat to go through.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22'Two narrow boats can fit into this lock.'

0:03:22 > 0:03:24Come on through!

0:03:27 > 0:03:29This boat needs to go up the hill.

0:03:29 > 0:03:33Now it's time to close the gates and let the water into this lock.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Darren closes the paddle.

0:03:35 > 0:03:40So the boat is on the same level as the next part of the canal.

0:03:40 > 0:03:44And off it goes to the next part of the lock.

0:03:45 > 0:03:50The locks need to be looked after so they can be used for a long time.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53These locks are over 240 years old.

0:03:53 > 0:03:57We'll need these because you'll help me oil and grease the gates

0:03:57 > 0:04:01- and the paddles.- Thank you, Darren. - You're more than welcome.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04There you go, nice big bit of grease for you.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08I'll turn, you get the grease on. That's it, get it all over.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Easier to use, is that. Fantastic job.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13What is that big brush for?

0:04:13 > 0:04:17This is a greasing brush that we use to grease

0:04:17 > 0:04:21this type of gearing, so we can keep far away and not get it all over.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26That's it. Bit down here, as well.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29- Is that enough grease now, Darren? - That's plenty.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33We need to run the gearing up and down once, to make sure

0:04:33 > 0:04:36it's all running beautiful for the future.

0:04:36 > 0:04:38Oh, look at that! Lovely jubbly!

0:04:40 > 0:04:44- Like it were brand-new. Thank you very much.- You're welcome.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08We're not here just for fun, we're here for more jobs!

0:05:08 > 0:05:11You guys want to come and give me a hand?

0:05:11 > 0:05:14We're scraping the green moss off the wall.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18This helps to keep the canal clear and tidy.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21- Adam, what's been the best part of your day?- Scraping.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25Rehab, what's been the best part?
