0:01:36 > 0:01:38Let's go!

0:01:38 > 0:01:41- Hi, my name's Leo. - And my name's Natalia.

0:01:41 > 0:01:45- Today we're going to be Foley artists.- Let's go!

0:01:45 > 0:01:47A Foley artist is someone

0:01:47 > 0:01:51who makes and records everyday sound effects

0:01:51 > 0:01:57that are added to movies, television and radio shows.

0:01:57 > 0:02:03This is Barnaby. He's an expert at making the recording sound effects

0:02:03 > 0:02:08that have been used in lots of famous movies and TV shows.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11Hello, Let's Goers. Welcome to my Foley studio.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14Why do some movies need extra sound effects?

0:02:14 > 0:02:17Adding sound effects helps us to enjoy the movie more

0:02:17 > 0:02:20and some cartoons don't have any sounds at all

0:02:20 > 0:02:23- so we make them up. - What do you do in the studio?

0:02:23 > 0:02:26This is where we record most of the sounds.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29Can me and Leo help you record some sounds today?

0:02:29 > 0:02:30Yeah, that's a great idea.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34We've got a film that we need to make some sounds for. Will you help?

0:02:34 > 0:02:36- Yes.- Yes.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39So, Let's Goers, Foley is all about listening.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43We have to concentrate and think about what sounds we need to make.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45Cue the movie.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47It's a bird flapping its wings.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51People walking through the snow.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55It's a roaring fire.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Those pigs are eating lots of dirt.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02So we need to make sounds for all those clips?

0:03:02 > 0:03:06That's right and I'll show you where we need to start. Come on.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08Welcome to the props store.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11Is this where you keep all your things to make the sounds?

0:03:11 > 0:03:15That's right, Leo. Who can remember what sounds we need to make?

0:03:15 > 0:03:20- Birds flapping wings and a pig eating.- That's right.

0:03:20 > 0:03:24Let's have a look and see if there's anything we can use to make them.

0:03:31 > 0:03:35This doesn't sound like a bird.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37No, that won't do.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40Natalia, why don't you give those gloves a flap?

0:03:40 > 0:03:44And, Leo, why don't you give that wet cloth a squeeze?

0:03:45 > 0:03:47These sound like birds' wings.

0:03:49 > 0:03:53Barnaby, this sounds like a pig eating.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55So we've got all the props we need.

0:03:55 > 0:03:59Let's get in the studio and record some sounds.

0:03:59 > 0:04:01We're recording, Natalia.

0:04:06 > 0:04:08Is the sound being recorded there?

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Yeah, it's being recorded on the microphone.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14We're going to record the fire next, Natalia.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20All the way. That's right.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27Oh, I can hear it through this.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31It sounds like he's walking in snow.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34Now all the sounds have been added,

0:04:34 > 0:04:36we're going to watch the movie again.

0:04:36 > 0:04:40Hopefully we've been good Foley artists today.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45It sounds like you're flapping.

0:04:46 > 0:04:50Wow! It sounds like they're walking through snow.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55Wow! Very cool.

0:04:57 > 0:04:58That's your one.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03That sounds so funny!

0:05:03 > 0:05:06We are such good Foley artists.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09Well done, you two. That was brilliant.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11# The Let's Go Club. #

0:05:11 > 0:05:13Let's go!

0:05:13 > 0:05:16What incredible sounds Leo and Natalia made

0:05:16 > 0:05:19and you'd never guess they weren't the real thing.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22Now it's quick trick time and today, inspired by movies,

0:05:22 > 0:05:25we're going to make a two-page animation.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29For this you'll need a pencil, a crayon and a pad of paper.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32Think of something to draw with something you can change.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34I'm going to draw a face.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37Now, I don't want to draw on the top sheet of paper.

0:05:37 > 0:05:39I want to turn this over.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42I'm going to draw on the second sheet of paper.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44Now I'm going to draw a clown face

0:05:44 > 0:05:48and I'm going to give him a really big smile.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50There's his hat.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52Lovely. Bobble on there.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55Lots of hair.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59Now you don't have to draw a clown face. You could draw anything.

0:05:59 > 0:06:04Now when you've finished that, turn the first piece of paper back over.

0:06:04 > 0:06:08This time I'm going to trace over my clown face, but change one thing.

0:06:08 > 0:06:13Instead of giving him a happy face, I'm going to give him a sad face.

0:06:16 > 0:06:18After you've done that, take your pencil

0:06:18 > 0:06:23and roll the top piece of paper around your pencil like this.

0:06:26 > 0:06:27And watch this.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31Happy, sad, happy, sad, happy, sad, happy, sad, happy, sad.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35There you have it. A simple but brilliant two-page animation.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38Did you see his face moving? That's my first movie

0:06:38 > 0:06:41and I didn't even have to say, "Lights, camera, action!"

0:06:41 > 0:06:43That's your quick trick done.

0:06:43 > 0:06:47Why don't you have a go and send us a video of your animation?

0:06:47 > 0:06:48We would love to see it.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51Grab a grown-up and go to the CBeebies website

0:06:51 > 0:06:53and click on the Let's Go Club.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55Everyone's got a favourite film.

0:06:55 > 0:06:56Next time you watch yours,

0:06:56 > 0:07:00wait until the very end and you'll see lots of names going by.

0:07:00 > 0:07:04These are the people who made the film like the dolly grip,

0:07:04 > 0:07:07the spark, the gaffer and their jobs are...

0:07:07 > 0:07:11Oh, I'm going to need some help with this.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13# The Let's Go Club. #

0:07:13 > 0:07:15# I have a question

0:07:15 > 0:07:18# Have you ever watched till the end of a movie

0:07:18 > 0:07:21# And noticed a long, long list of names? #

0:07:21 > 0:07:23Mmm-mm.

0:07:23 > 0:07:28# I can tell you what those names are at the end of a movie

0:07:28 > 0:07:31# Who are they? Time to find out. #

0:07:31 > 0:07:32Let's go!

0:07:32 > 0:07:36# The list of names at the end of every film you see

0:07:36 > 0:07:41# Is called the credits and it shows what people do

0:07:41 > 0:07:46# Some of the jobs on that list have really funny names

0:07:46 > 0:07:49# I'll explain some of them to you. #

0:07:49 > 0:07:50Please do.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54# A Foley artist records the noises that make a film sound cool

0:07:54 > 0:07:59# They use vegetables and dustbin lids and sometimes gravel too. #

0:07:59 > 0:08:01# And what about grips or key grips?

0:08:01 > 0:08:03# Are they the same as hair grips?

0:08:03 > 0:08:09# No, they move equipment on the set and there's lots of that to do.

0:08:09 > 0:08:14# So many people that work to get a movie made

0:08:14 > 0:08:18# From writing scripts through to finding funny props

0:08:18 > 0:08:23# Clapper loaders, food stylists, stagehands and more

0:08:23 > 0:08:27# The work is hard, it never stops. #

0:08:27 > 0:08:32# So can you tell me more about those names at the end of movies?

0:08:32 > 0:08:37# Who are they? I'd really love to know more. #

0:08:37 > 0:08:40- # Well, a boom operator records the sound.- What this kind of boom?

0:08:40 > 0:08:46# No, a boom moves a microphone close to the sound a film must get.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48# A dolly grip moves cameras.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50- # What this kind of dolly?- No!

0:08:50 > 0:08:55# A dolly is a special cart that wheels the cameras around the set/

0:08:55 > 0:09:00# And a Best Boy helps the person in charge of all the electrical stuff.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04- # Can a Best Boy be a girl, though? - Of course they can, you bet.

0:09:04 > 0:09:10# We have found out what some people do when they're making movies

0:09:10 > 0:09:12# Amazing

0:09:12 > 0:09:15# Cool information to know! #

0:09:16 > 0:09:18# The Let's Go Club. #

0:09:18 > 0:09:19Let's go!

0:09:19 > 0:09:22I'm going to be singing that song all day now

0:09:22 > 0:09:26and I think if anyone's the Best Boy around here, it's me.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28- Hello there.- Hello.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30- What's your name?- I'm Rocket.

0:09:30 > 0:09:34Hello there, Rocket. Have you come to show us a Super Skill?

0:09:34 > 0:09:37- That's right.- Go on, then, show us some moves, Rocket.

0:09:37 > 0:09:42SHE HUMS A TUNE

0:09:42 > 0:09:44Look at those dance moves.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47Good job, Rocket. What do you think of that, guys?

0:09:47 > 0:09:49- Good.- Good.

0:09:49 > 0:09:53- And this lady here is Julia. Hello, Julia.- Hi, Let's Goers.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56Have you all got your puppets?

0:09:56 > 0:09:59I've got mine as well. Looking good.

0:09:59 > 0:10:03Julia, you bring Rocket to life, so where do we start?

0:10:03 > 0:10:06It's best to start with a simple puppet so like you've got

0:10:06 > 0:10:09with balls on a string with eyes drawn on.

0:10:09 > 0:10:11Makes it easier while you're practising.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14- Have you given your puppet a name? - Max.- Max, great.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16- Cookie.- Very good.

0:10:16 > 0:10:17- Amber.- Very nice.

0:10:17 > 0:10:21So next thing you need to think about is your puppet's expressions.

0:10:21 > 0:10:25Look at each other's faces and copy some expressions.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28- You can use other people's faces? - Absolutely, yeah.

0:10:28 > 0:10:32Give it a go with your puppets and let's see some of your expressions.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34Oh, very excited. Very nice.

0:10:34 > 0:10:38Can we maybe try a bit of sad?

0:10:38 > 0:10:41Once you've got your expressions sorted, what do we do now?

0:10:41 > 0:10:45Next you need to think about who your puppet's talking to.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48So it needs to be looking at the person it's talking to.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50We call that an eye-line

0:10:50 > 0:10:54and make sure it's looking at the person or puppet it's talking to.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56- Hello, Bob.- Hello, Martin.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58So, Julia, how do we put on a show?

0:10:58 > 0:11:02Very important, the audience has come to see your puppet.

0:11:02 > 0:11:06They haven't come to see you, so put your arm really up high in the air

0:11:06 > 0:11:10and then hide behind something so that you won't be seen.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13Now that we've got the expressions and know we have to hide,

0:11:13 > 0:11:16should we get behind this chest and give it a go?

0:11:16 > 0:11:20That's a great idea! Let's see your groovy moves!

0:11:20 > 0:11:22- ALL:- Boo!

0:11:22 > 0:11:25- I'm Cookie.- I'm Amber.- I'm Max.

0:11:25 > 0:11:29- ALL:- We're all Let's Go Clubbers.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32Oh, what a great Super Skill.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35- Thanks, Julia. Thank you, Rocket.- Thanks.

0:11:35 > 0:11:39Now it's time to pop some corn, take your seats and dim the lights

0:11:39 > 0:11:43because Let's Goer Ellie-May is putting on a home cinema premiere.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46- Er, Martin.- Yeah.- I wonder if there'll be a red carpet?

0:11:46 > 0:11:49Me too.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51# The Let's Go Club. #

0:11:51 > 0:11:53Let's go!
