0:00:02 > 0:00:04This is The Let's Go Club, but mini!
0:00:04 > 0:00:07Expect making, exploring, supersizing, dancing,
0:00:07 > 0:00:10fact-finding and laughing.
0:00:10 > 0:00:12We've only got a few minutes,
0:00:12 > 0:00:16so get ready for more fun from The Let's Go Club.
0:00:16 > 0:00:22Fact fans, today we're finding out all about computers and robots.
0:00:22 > 0:00:25Silicon chips, whirring cogs,
0:00:25 > 0:00:28circuits, wires, nuts and bolts,
0:00:28 > 0:00:31beeps and bleeps, data banks,
0:00:31 > 0:00:35super brains, mechanical cranks,
0:00:35 > 0:00:38tapping keyboards, swiping screens,
0:00:38 > 0:00:41bytes and bits and laser beams.
0:00:41 > 0:00:44Let's get to those facts.
0:00:44 > 0:00:49First up, one of the first ever robots was a steam-powered pigeon.
0:00:49 > 0:00:52What a lot of hot air!
0:00:52 > 0:00:56A clever man from Greece called Archytas wanted to learn more
0:00:56 > 0:01:01about how birds fly, so he built a robo-bird.
0:01:01 > 0:01:05The robot pigeon could fly the length of two football pitches.
0:01:05 > 0:01:08The only problem was that once it landed,
0:01:08 > 0:01:12the pigeon couldn't take off again to fly home.
0:01:12 > 0:01:14It had run out of steam!
0:01:14 > 0:01:18Next, the very first computer was heavier than an elephant.
0:01:18 > 0:01:21ELEPHANT TRUMPETS That's a weighty fact!
0:01:21 > 0:01:25The computer was called Colossus and was as big as a bus.
0:01:25 > 0:01:28TOOT-TOOT! But only a few people knew
0:01:28 > 0:01:31about Colossus because it did top-secret jobs -
0:01:31 > 0:01:35cracking codes and finding out spy information.
0:01:35 > 0:01:38(Shh! Don't tell anyone.)
0:01:38 > 0:01:42Next, there are robots on the planet Mars.
0:01:42 > 0:01:44That is out of this world!
0:01:44 > 0:01:49The robots are called Mars Rovers and took months and months
0:01:49 > 0:01:51to get to the Red Planet.
0:01:51 > 0:01:56Their job is to do experiments so that we can learn more about Mars
0:01:56 > 0:01:59and find out if anything lives there.
0:01:59 > 0:02:04Just one problem - no-one has worked out a way to get the robots back,
0:02:04 > 0:02:07so they're stuck on another world forever.
0:02:07 > 0:02:10It's a good job robots don't get lonely!
0:02:10 > 0:02:15And finally, in South Africa, traffic lights are called robots.
0:02:15 > 0:02:17Let's put the brakes on.
0:02:17 > 0:02:20Back in the olden days policemen organised the traffic,
0:02:20 > 0:02:25telling cars when to stop and when to go using hand signals.
0:02:25 > 0:02:28Then electric traffic lights were invented.
0:02:28 > 0:02:30They replaced the real policemen,
0:02:30 > 0:02:34so people started calling the lights "robot policemen".
0:02:34 > 0:02:39And, over time, this name was shortened to just robots.
0:02:39 > 0:02:43That's red, amber and green for go-bot. Fact.
0:02:45 > 0:02:47You can join The Let's Go Club too.
0:02:47 > 0:02:50Grab a grown-up and head to the CBeebies website.
0:02:50 > 0:02:56There are songs to sing, things to make and do, and CBeebies Radio too.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59Remember, we're the club that never closes.
