0:00:02 > 0:00:03DOG BARKS
0:00:03 > 0:00:04CAT MEOWS
0:00:05 > 0:00:10I'm Stacey Dooley, and I adore animals of all shapes and sizes.
0:00:10 > 0:00:13But sometimes, just like us, our furry friends get sick.
0:00:13 > 0:00:16Thankfully, when they do, they can come to places like this,
0:00:16 > 0:00:20where amazing vets will go that extra mile to fix them up.
0:00:21 > 0:00:22Hello!
0:00:22 > 0:00:25Meet rookie vet Rory.
0:00:25 > 0:00:26Oh, I do love a friendly rabbit.
0:00:26 > 0:00:28It smells like dog sick.
0:00:28 > 0:00:29Ugh!
0:00:29 > 0:00:31Every pet's best friend, Cheryl.
0:00:31 > 0:00:33Hello!
0:00:33 > 0:00:35THEY LAUGH
0:00:35 > 0:00:37Ow! That really hurt!
0:00:37 > 0:00:39The coolest vet in town, Cat.
0:00:39 > 0:00:41Come on, honey.
0:00:41 > 0:00:44Well, that's fine, you just sweep the floor while you come on in.
0:00:44 > 0:00:46And always caring gentle James.
0:00:46 > 0:00:48Aren't you gorgeous?
0:00:48 > 0:00:50- GEESE HONK - Oh, you can see what I mean!
0:00:53 > 0:00:55They're the vets with the pets factor.
0:01:03 > 0:01:05Coming up on today's show...
0:01:05 > 0:01:08vet Cheryl performs a vital face-lift...
0:01:08 > 0:01:09Hello, Jabs.
0:01:09 > 0:01:10..on this poorly pug.
0:01:10 > 0:01:13Once we take away a skin fold, we can't put it back.
0:01:13 > 0:01:15PIG OINKS We catch up with James...
0:01:15 > 0:01:16They're very loud!
0:01:16 > 0:01:17..at his animal-packed home.
0:01:17 > 0:01:20It does hurt when they go for you, I have to say.
0:01:20 > 0:01:24And vet Rory is under pressure to make sure this little piggy...
0:01:24 > 0:01:26- 180, 190.- That's fine.
0:01:26 > 0:01:28..survives a risky anaesthetic.
0:01:30 > 0:01:32But first, we kick off in Essex with Cheryl.
0:01:33 > 0:01:35Morning!
0:01:35 > 0:01:37Cheryl loves dogs of all shapes and sizes.
0:01:37 > 0:01:39Hello!
0:01:39 > 0:01:43But the pooches she treats the most are popular pedigrees.
0:01:43 > 0:01:45Do you want to come home with me? He says, "Yes!"
0:01:45 > 0:01:49Pomeranians, shih-tzus, and French Bulldogs.
0:01:49 > 0:01:52DOG SNEEZES Bless you!
0:01:53 > 0:01:54Come on, Jabba!
0:01:54 > 0:01:58And one of Cheryl's favourites is booked in today. A pug called Jabba.
0:02:00 > 0:02:02He belongs to 13-year-old Kelan.
0:02:02 > 0:02:04Oh, you're very ticklish, aren't you?
0:02:04 > 0:02:07And this passionate pug has a heart of gold.
0:02:10 > 0:02:13Jabba can get really friendly. Even with cats.
0:02:13 > 0:02:16I mean, I know that cats are, like, rivals to dogs,
0:02:16 > 0:02:17but he's extremely friendly.
0:02:20 > 0:02:23It's easy to see the inspiration behind Jabba's name.
0:02:23 > 0:02:26But that's where the sinister sci-fi similarity ends.
0:02:28 > 0:02:31This friendly pug is no intergalactic gangster...
0:02:32 > 0:02:34he's 100% Jedi.
0:02:36 > 0:02:39HE WHIMPERS But right now, he's feeling a little
0:02:39 > 0:02:40on the dark side.
0:02:42 > 0:02:45The wrinkly folds above his nose are rubbing together and
0:02:45 > 0:02:47irritating his skin,
0:02:47 > 0:02:50which is driving poor Jabba round the bend.
0:02:50 > 0:02:51Jabbies!
0:02:51 > 0:02:52Oh, you're so heavy!
0:02:52 > 0:02:56Cheryl and Mum Julie have tried everything to soothe his skin.
0:02:56 > 0:02:58You rub in there and I'll do his face.
0:02:58 > 0:03:00- But with nothing working... - Good boy.
0:03:00 > 0:03:03..it's time for some serious action.
0:03:03 > 0:03:04THEY LAUGH
0:03:06 > 0:03:08Jabba the pug is having a face-lift.
0:03:10 > 0:03:13Not the type that some of these Hollywood stars get.
0:03:13 > 0:03:17He needs those excess folds of skin removing to stop them rubbing
0:03:17 > 0:03:19together, which should fix the problem for good.
0:03:22 > 0:03:23It has to be done.
0:03:23 > 0:03:29It's not because I want him to look good, cos I think he's gorgeous,
0:03:29 > 0:03:30but it's better for Jabba.
0:03:31 > 0:03:35But with the day of the op here, Julie's nerves are jangling.
0:03:37 > 0:03:39Come on, Jabba.
0:03:39 > 0:03:40Oh, Cheryl, he wants to go out!
0:03:40 > 0:03:43I know. That's because you're worried, so he's worried.
0:03:43 > 0:03:45- So, stop being worried! - I'm not, I'm fine.
0:03:45 > 0:03:47Yeah. You're going to be fine.
0:03:47 > 0:03:48Hello, Jabs!
0:03:48 > 0:03:51Julie and Jabba have been coming here for a while now,
0:03:51 > 0:03:53and I can tell she's really worried about him.
0:03:53 > 0:03:56But he must be feeling really uncomfortable,
0:03:56 > 0:03:58so she's doing the best thing.
0:03:58 > 0:04:01So, when he's asleep, we'll decide how much to take away,
0:04:01 > 0:04:04but we really want to remove all of that rubbing.
0:04:05 > 0:04:08But as well as the excess skin around his face,
0:04:08 > 0:04:12Cheryl has noticed this pug is getting a bit podgy.
0:04:12 > 0:04:15- I don't give him any other food. - You sure? No-one else?- I swear.
0:04:15 > 0:04:18Oh, well, he has had a bit of cheese.
0:04:18 > 0:04:19THEY LAUGH
0:04:20 > 0:04:22OK, well that's something else.
0:04:25 > 0:04:30- It's just like us, OK? We are what we eat.- But, Cheryl, he's a big pug.
0:04:30 > 0:04:32He is a big pug, but he has definitely put on weight.
0:04:32 > 0:04:34What have you been eating, Jabba?
0:04:34 > 0:04:35Carrots!
0:04:35 > 0:04:37Carrots?! Cheese!
0:04:37 > 0:04:40I'm a believer in everything in moderation,
0:04:40 > 0:04:43but too many treats are just going to make Jabba even fatter.
0:04:44 > 0:04:48Come on, then. Whoa! He knows. He says, "I'm off!" Oh, Jabba!
0:04:49 > 0:04:52You're making me cry, now, Cheryl.
0:04:52 > 0:04:54- I'll look after him.- I know. - Don't cry. And it is the best thing.
0:04:54 > 0:04:58- I know, you're the best, I love you.- Thank you.
0:04:58 > 0:05:00Have a lovely day. See you later.
0:05:01 > 0:05:02Come on, Jabba.
0:05:09 > 0:05:12It's a bit emotional. I didn't think I'd be like this.
0:05:13 > 0:05:14I know he's in good hands.
0:05:16 > 0:05:19I dunno, it's just hard to explain, really.
0:05:20 > 0:05:22Good boy. You are heavy, aren't you?
0:05:26 > 0:05:30Join us later when Julie's precious pug has a life-changing operation.
0:05:41 > 0:05:42DOG BARKS
0:05:42 > 0:05:45But next, we're in London with Rory.
0:05:45 > 0:05:48- He's the new kid on the block... - That looks really weird.
0:05:48 > 0:05:51..who gets to help loads of pint-sized pets.
0:05:51 > 0:05:52That's nice, isn't it?
0:05:54 > 0:05:57There's something so cute about little furry animals.
0:05:57 > 0:05:59- Hello!- Hi.- How are you?
0:05:59 > 0:06:03And the patient needing his help today is this gorgeous little
0:06:03 > 0:06:04guinea called Lolly.
0:06:06 > 0:06:08Lolly's owner Tom is at school.
0:06:10 > 0:06:13So, Mum Sarah has brought her in to see Rory.
0:06:13 > 0:06:15When we arrive in the room, she squeaks,
0:06:15 > 0:06:17and when she hears the fridge door, she squeaks,
0:06:17 > 0:06:20and there's a real communication going on.
0:06:22 > 0:06:25That's because Princess Lolly is on a seafood diet.
0:06:26 > 0:06:29She sees food...
0:06:29 > 0:06:30LOLLY GASPS ..and she eats it.
0:06:32 > 0:06:34Yippee!
0:06:34 > 0:06:37Though recently, this greedy guinea's love affair
0:06:37 > 0:06:40with all things veg has come to an abrupt end.
0:06:44 > 0:06:47She's developed these nasty sores on her face,
0:06:47 > 0:06:49which is making her favourite hobby rather painful.
0:06:50 > 0:06:54So, today, Rory and vet nurse Lucinda will need to put her
0:06:54 > 0:06:56under so they can get a closer look.
0:06:57 > 0:07:00And they've got some simple tricks to keep this little piggy
0:07:00 > 0:07:02warm throughout the procedure.
0:07:02 > 0:07:05So, Lu's just prepping what we call "hot hands".
0:07:05 > 0:07:06We fill plastic gloves with warm water,
0:07:06 > 0:07:09and it's just a nice way of keeping little furries warm.
0:07:09 > 0:07:12We are always looking for ways to be thrifty at the vets,
0:07:12 > 0:07:16and it's amazing what you can do with a simple surgical glove.
0:07:25 > 0:07:28But doing a procedure like this on small animals like Lolly is
0:07:28 > 0:07:29no laughing matter.
0:07:29 > 0:07:31- It's all right. - LOLLY SQUEAKS
0:07:31 > 0:07:34I know, sweetie. Oh, sweetie, it's OK.
0:07:34 > 0:07:36There we go. That's all it is.
0:07:36 > 0:07:38Guinea pigs are really fragile creatures.
0:07:38 > 0:07:41It only takes the tiniest little thing for their heart to stop
0:07:41 > 0:07:43or for them to stop breathing under anaesthetic.
0:07:43 > 0:07:46- She's getting a little bit sleepy. - Yup. There we go.
0:07:47 > 0:07:51It will be down to Lucinda to make sure Lolly's heart is ticking
0:07:51 > 0:07:52properly.
0:07:52 > 0:07:54- 180, 190.- Yeah, that's fine.
0:07:54 > 0:07:57- OK, just get her on her back. - Come on, little one. Right over.
0:08:00 > 0:08:02So, for everyone, the pressure's on.
0:08:06 > 0:08:10Stay with us to see what Rory finds lurking around Lolly's lips.
0:08:10 > 0:08:13It looks as if there's some sort of infection around the mouth.
0:08:13 > 0:08:17There we go, look at that. That can't be too comfortable.
0:08:17 > 0:08:21And vet James has a helping hand to give this gorgeous calf his
0:08:21 > 0:08:22own personal ID.
0:08:22 > 0:08:24OK. Right. Squeeze...now!
0:08:28 > 0:08:31But first, it's back to Essex with Cheryl.
0:08:32 > 0:08:36Jabba the pug is about to undergo some major facial surgery.
0:08:37 > 0:08:40And head nurse Jade is on hand to keep Jabba calm before
0:08:40 > 0:08:41he goes under the knife.
0:08:45 > 0:08:48Jabba? Jabba? Jabba, are you going to have a face-lift?
0:08:48 > 0:08:49Yeah.
0:08:49 > 0:08:51Jabba might not look too happy about it,
0:08:51 > 0:08:56but he needs this surgery to remove excess folds of skin on his
0:08:56 > 0:09:00face, to stop them rubbing together and causing painful irritation
0:09:00 > 0:09:01under those wrinkles.
0:09:03 > 0:09:04And with him sedated,
0:09:04 > 0:09:08Cheryl can have a proper look at the infected area without him wriggling.
0:09:08 > 0:09:11So, this is the skin fold that we're talking about.
0:09:11 > 0:09:14And it's so folded, it gets all infected in here.
0:09:14 > 0:09:17Look at his nose, it's all scabby and sore.
0:09:17 > 0:09:18Look how bad it is.
0:09:20 > 0:09:23Facial surgery on pets is pretty specialised stuff.
0:09:23 > 0:09:26SHE SIGHS So, Cheryl's feeling the pressure.
0:09:27 > 0:09:30It's quite a difficult procedure to make him still look cute and
0:09:30 > 0:09:34make him look like a pug, but make him so he doesn't get sore.
0:09:36 > 0:09:39This is one of the most challenging operations I've ever done,
0:09:39 > 0:09:42and because of another issue with pugs,
0:09:42 > 0:09:44they have a lot of trouble breathing,
0:09:44 > 0:09:48which means that putting them under anaesthetic is even more risky.
0:09:51 > 0:09:54I really like Jabba. He's very sweet.
0:09:54 > 0:09:56I'm quite nervous. Nervous for Jabba.
0:09:58 > 0:09:59Yeah, you happy?
0:10:01 > 0:10:03Time to make the first incision,
0:10:04 > 0:10:06and there's no room for error.
0:10:07 > 0:10:10Once we take away a skin fold, we can't put it back.
0:10:10 > 0:10:13So, we have to be really, really careful,
0:10:13 > 0:10:16and you don't know until you do it how it's going to look.
0:10:17 > 0:10:20- PARROT SQUAWKS - If you're squeamish, look away now!
0:10:20 > 0:10:24But if you can bear to watch, Cheryl's carefully removing a strip
0:10:24 > 0:10:28of skin about the length of a finger from each side of Jabba's face.
0:10:30 > 0:10:32What do you think, Jade?
0:10:32 > 0:10:34Just another little half a centimetre, I think, down.
0:10:34 > 0:10:36Yeah, I think so.
0:10:36 > 0:10:38Definitely don't want it to not be enough.
0:10:39 > 0:10:41- MACHINE BEEPS - Yeah.- Yeah, that's it.
0:10:41 > 0:10:43That's the one. Cool.
0:10:44 > 0:10:47But it's only when the sections are stitched back together that
0:10:47 > 0:10:50Cheryl will know if she's got her measurements right.
0:10:50 > 0:10:52We're nearly done and it's looking great,
0:10:52 > 0:10:56and he still looks like a pug, which is just really good as well.
0:10:56 > 0:11:00If ever I needed a face-lift, I'd definitely ask Cheryl to do it.
0:11:00 > 0:11:01Thanks, Jade.
0:11:01 > 0:11:04Time to bring this precious pug back round.
0:11:04 > 0:11:06Oh, he looks so good.
0:11:06 > 0:11:07Oh, Jabba.
0:11:11 > 0:11:13Oh, Jabbie, you look like E.T.!
0:11:18 > 0:11:20I love pushing myself like this.
0:11:20 > 0:11:23And even if I say so myself, that's a pretty good face-lift.
0:11:25 > 0:11:28Cheryl's done such a good job preserving that sad pug face.
0:11:28 > 0:11:31The only thing he's down in the mouth about now is that
0:11:31 > 0:11:32cheesy blue collar.
0:11:34 > 0:11:37And we'll be back later to see how Jabba's getting on.
0:11:43 > 0:11:45Ooh, so cute!
0:11:45 > 0:11:48Now it's over to Bristol with vet James.
0:11:50 > 0:11:54Here he comes. Good boy. Shall we go for a little wander?
0:11:54 > 0:11:55Eh? Where are you?
0:11:56 > 0:11:58At home in the Somerset countryside,
0:11:58 > 0:12:03James kicks off his day exercising his faithful friend Olly.
0:12:03 > 0:12:05Good boy! Good boy.
0:12:05 > 0:12:08But this playful Labrador isn't the only animal around here that
0:12:08 > 0:12:11needs his attention in the morning.
0:12:11 > 0:12:13PIG SNORTS
0:12:13 > 0:12:16- Hu-Hu. - There's some hungry Kunekune pigs,
0:12:16 > 0:12:19a henhouse full of impatient chickens...
0:12:19 > 0:12:24- They're very loud!- ..and a gaggle of really grumpy geese.
0:12:24 > 0:12:26It does hurt when they go for you, I have to say.
0:12:26 > 0:12:28C'mon, gossies. Come on.
0:12:28 > 0:12:32I have always loved animals, and since probably about the age
0:12:32 > 0:12:35of seven, I had my heart set on being either a farmer or a vet.
0:12:35 > 0:12:39And, living somewhere like this, I get the best of both worlds.
0:12:40 > 0:12:41See, this is what they do.
0:12:42 > 0:12:43Oi! Oi!
0:12:46 > 0:12:47GEESE HONK AGGRESSIVELY
0:12:49 > 0:12:54They don't take any prisoners. They are... Go away! You monkey.
0:12:54 > 0:12:55Here, look. Have some food.
0:12:57 > 0:13:00But it isn't all just goosing around.
0:13:00 > 0:13:02Can I have my rake back, please?
0:13:02 > 0:13:06Occasionally, James gets to work his vet-y magic on the locals.
0:13:08 > 0:13:11So, look at these!
0:13:11 > 0:13:13- In a nearby field...- Hi!
0:13:13 > 0:13:17..this herd of Devon Red cows belonging to James's neighbour have
0:13:17 > 0:13:18just had calves.
0:13:18 > 0:13:21Aww, look. Aren't they fab?
0:13:24 > 0:13:27Puppies and kittens are so cute, but for me,
0:13:27 > 0:13:31a baby calf is the top of the baby animal league table.
0:13:33 > 0:13:36And it's this five-day-old cutie that needs his attention today.
0:13:36 > 0:13:39After a calf is first born, there's a few things that we need to do,
0:13:39 > 0:13:43and one of those is to actually put an ear tag into their ear,
0:13:43 > 0:13:46which is essentially a little bit like having their ears pierced.
0:13:46 > 0:13:48And the tag that we use has then got a number on it,
0:13:48 > 0:13:50which then identifies each cow to each herd.
0:13:50 > 0:13:52But he won't be working alone today.
0:13:53 > 0:13:58This herd will one day belong to the owner's 12-year-old son, Seb.
0:13:58 > 0:13:59- Hi, Seb!- Hello.- How are you?
0:13:59 > 0:14:01So, he's keen to lend a hand.
0:14:01 > 0:14:02He's quite a big calf, isn't he?
0:14:02 > 0:14:06- We've named him Hercules because he's so big.- Have you, already?
0:14:07 > 0:14:10With Mum safely shepherded out of the way,
0:14:10 > 0:14:12James and Seb can get to work.
0:14:12 > 0:14:14Right, let's get our kit ready.
0:14:14 > 0:14:16This isn't just a first for Hercules,
0:14:16 > 0:14:18it's a first for Seb, too,
0:14:18 > 0:14:20so James is going to show him the ropes.
0:14:20 > 0:14:22We need to make sure it's one really firm action,
