0:00:04 > 0:00:08I love pets and hate it when they're ill or injured.

0:00:08 > 0:00:11When they are, help is at hand at places like this,

0:00:11 > 0:00:14with amazing vets going above and beyond to make them better.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18Meet rookie vet Rory...

0:00:18 > 0:00:19Oh, I do love a friendly rabbit.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21It smells like dog sick.

0:00:21 > 0:00:23Eurgh!

0:00:23 > 0:00:25..every pet's best friend, Cheryl...

0:00:25 > 0:00:27Hello. Mwah!

0:00:28 > 0:00:31Ow! That really hurt!

0:00:31 > 0:00:33..the coolest vet in town, Cat...

0:00:33 > 0:00:35Come on, honey. That's fine.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37You just sweep the floor while you come on in.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40..and always caring, gentle James.

0:00:40 > 0:00:41Aren't you gorgeous?

0:00:41 > 0:00:43Oh! Don't attack me!

0:00:47 > 0:00:49They're the vets with The Pets Factor.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58Coming up on today's show...

0:00:59 > 0:01:01..vet Cat meets her match...

0:01:02 > 0:01:04..a feisty feline called Butterfly...

0:01:04 > 0:01:06CAT HISSES

0:01:06 > 0:01:09..Rory's forced to operate on Coco the Doberman,

0:01:09 > 0:01:11in search of a swallowed sock...

0:01:11 > 0:01:12We don't really know what we're going into,

0:01:12 > 0:01:14so it's all a bit up in the air.

0:01:14 > 0:01:18..and Cheryl helps a bulldog puppy with a serious case of the sniffles.

0:01:18 > 0:01:22He has some green gunge coming from his left nostril.

0:01:22 > 0:01:23Did it just start this afternoon?

0:01:23 > 0:01:25Literally just this afternoon.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29But first, we're in Sheffield with Cat the vet.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33For more than ten years,

0:01:33 > 0:01:35thousands of pets have walked through these doors,

0:01:35 > 0:01:38all hoping to be fixed up by Cat and the team...

0:01:38 > 0:01:40Are you hiding from me now?

0:01:40 > 0:01:42Yes!

0:01:42 > 0:01:44..and every one has their own unique character.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48We see them all here - happy pets...

0:01:49 > 0:01:51..reluctant ones.

0:01:52 > 0:01:54A lot of the time, they're just nervous.

0:01:57 > 0:02:01But sometimes, they are downright stroppy.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05Butterfly's not a fan of the vet's.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09But recently, she's been a bit of a regular.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13But unlike an actual butterfly...

0:02:14 > 0:02:15..this moggy is a real bruiser.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20She spends her days outside, getting up to all sorts of mischief.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25One day, she came home with a very nasty cut on her tail,

0:02:25 > 0:02:27so her owners took her straight to the vet's,

0:02:27 > 0:02:29where she was bandaged up.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34Now she's recovering at home with her family...

0:02:34 > 0:02:36her feline friend Gadget...

0:02:36 > 0:02:37MEOW!

0:02:37 > 0:02:38..Jack the terrier...

0:02:38 > 0:02:40MEOW!

0:02:40 > 0:02:43..and not forgetting Snakeyo the snake.

0:02:44 > 0:02:49Poor Butterfly is banned from going outside until her tail is better,

0:02:49 > 0:02:52and that's making this adventurous moggy miserable.

0:02:52 > 0:02:56For her, being inside, she's not particularly keen on it.

0:02:56 > 0:03:00She's being very vocal at the moment, meowing,

0:03:00 > 0:03:01and sometimes hissing at us.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05She's been more grumpy than usual.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08Well, best of luck with this one, Cat.

0:03:10 > 0:03:11A week after her accident,

0:03:11 > 0:03:15Butterfly is booked in to check if her nasty wound is healing properly.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17Hi, Butterfly.

0:03:17 > 0:03:18Hello, my love.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21Bless Butterfly. She is a bit of a handful.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24So we're going to need to sedate her

0:03:24 > 0:03:26so she's not scared or angry when I touch her tail.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28But that does mean we're going to have to inject her,

0:03:28 > 0:03:30and I'm not sure how that's going to go.

0:03:33 > 0:03:34Be brave!

0:03:35 > 0:03:37SHE HISSES

0:03:37 > 0:03:39OK. There we go. I know.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42I've dealt with hundreds of cats who are stressed and anxious

0:03:42 > 0:03:44because they're in a strange place.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46Right, let's pop you back, babes.

0:03:46 > 0:03:47But you do have to be careful.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49I quite like my face the way it is.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51BUTTERFLY YOWLS

0:03:51 > 0:03:52Ooh!

0:03:52 > 0:03:54In you go. There you go.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58No, stay there. Yes, I know.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00Cool.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03Give her five minutes, and she'll be much more sleepy.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08And Cat's right. Five minutes later, and this moggy is groggy.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10Time to find out how that tail is healing.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12So, little Butterfly, let's see

0:04:12 > 0:04:16what's going on underneath your dressing.

0:04:16 > 0:04:17PARROT SQUAWKS

0:04:17 > 0:04:19If you're squeamish, look away now!

0:04:21 > 0:04:23It might look a bit scary,

0:04:23 > 0:04:27but, actually, her tail's healing really, really well.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29What we're looking for

0:04:29 > 0:04:32is that the tissue is really pink and healthy

0:04:32 > 0:04:35and that there's no nasty yellow bits or any crusty bits

0:04:35 > 0:04:37that could indicate infection.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40We're just going to use some water and some antiseptic

0:04:40 > 0:04:41to give it a good scrub.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48Lovely. Clever little Butterfly.

0:04:48 > 0:04:52Now the wound is clean, Cat can put Butterfly's dreaded bandage back on.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55I'll keep my fingers crossed that one day,

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Butterfly might let us change her dressing, conscious,

0:04:58 > 0:04:59but we shall see.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04A couple of hours later,

0:05:04 > 0:05:07it's clear that day might be a way off

0:05:07 > 0:05:09and Butterfly has her "cattitude" back.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11BUTTERFLY YOWLS

0:05:11 > 0:05:12Go on, in there!

0:05:12 > 0:05:14Don't worry, Butterfly.

0:05:14 > 0:05:15It's time to go home.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17Here she is!

0:05:17 > 0:05:19And one look at her owner,

0:05:19 > 0:05:22and this ferocious feline turns into a pussycat.

0:05:22 > 0:05:23BUTTERFLY PURRS

0:05:23 > 0:05:26Stay with us, as Cat attempts the impossible...

0:05:26 > 0:05:28Thank you. Cheers, bye.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30..a bandage-change on a wide-awake Butterfly.

0:05:33 > 0:05:34Hee-hee-hee-hee-hee!

0:05:37 > 0:05:39DOG BARKS

0:05:39 > 0:05:41Next, we're with Rory in South London.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47Most of the patients Rory sees are cats and dogs.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52But that suits him just fine.

0:05:52 > 0:05:53Am I a cat person...

0:05:53 > 0:05:55MEOW!

0:05:55 > 0:05:56..or a dog person?

0:05:56 > 0:05:57WOOF! WOOF!

0:05:57 > 0:05:58Hmm.

0:05:58 > 0:06:00CLOCK TICKS

0:06:00 > 0:06:04I love them both, but I think I'd have to say dog person.

0:06:04 > 0:06:06Hello, how's it going?

0:06:06 > 0:06:09I think the dog is my spirit animal.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12They're so cheeky and curious.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14Oh, OK! Hi. Yeah!

0:06:14 > 0:06:17But sometimes, a dog's curiosity can get the better of them.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22Puppies will eat anything, and Coco is no exception.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24SLURP!

0:06:24 > 0:06:27But she seems to have an extra special favourite dish -

0:06:27 > 0:06:29stinky socks.

0:06:31 > 0:06:33And she's only gone and swallowed one whole.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38This time, it's never come back out.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41So it's vet Rory to the rescue.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46So, Coco seems to really like dirty socks,

0:06:46 > 0:06:48and we need to get it out.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51She was in the vet's just over a week ago

0:06:51 > 0:06:53after eating a DIFFERENT sock...

0:06:53 > 0:06:54Hey, trouble.

0:06:54 > 0:06:56..but luckily, that one came out the other end.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58Right, time for another IV.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00This time, she's not so lucky.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03Up we go.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05The thing about something like a sock

0:07:05 > 0:07:07is they can be really tricky to find.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10It could be in her stomach, it could be in her intestines.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12We just don't know.

0:07:12 > 0:07:14Are you going to be so good? Yeah!

0:07:14 > 0:07:16First up, an X-ray.

0:07:16 > 0:07:17It won't show the sock itself,

0:07:17 > 0:07:20but should help point Rory in the right direction.

0:07:20 > 0:07:21Oh, you're so clever!

0:07:22 > 0:07:24X-rays.

0:07:26 > 0:07:30And the X-ray has shown some areas that don't look quite right.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33There's some odd places, especially round the colon,

0:07:33 > 0:07:36and some of the intestines are quite lumpy and bumpy,

0:07:36 > 0:07:39where they should be really smooth.

0:07:39 > 0:07:42Rory thinks the sock is stuck in her intestines.

0:07:42 > 0:07:43It's all going to be OK, isn't it? Yeah.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46So the only option now is surgery.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49This one is going to be a biggie.

0:07:49 > 0:07:50Time for my lucky hat.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52This is a pretty serious surgery.

0:07:52 > 0:07:54We don't really know what we're going into,

0:07:54 > 0:07:55so it's all a bit up in the air.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59I'm not going to lie to you - this is really nerve-racking.

0:08:01 > 0:08:02Squeaky bum time!

0:08:04 > 0:08:07And I simply cannot do surgery in shoes.

0:08:08 > 0:08:10I have to be comfortable.

0:08:10 > 0:08:12Best not let Coco get a whiff of those socks, Rory.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17Join us later on a stomach-churning hunt...

0:08:17 > 0:08:20Oh, oh, crikey, that's awful!

0:08:20 > 0:08:23..when Rory delves deep inside this Doberman...

0:08:23 > 0:08:24Oh, you silly dog!

0:08:26 > 0:08:28..and vet Cat calls in the cavalry...

0:08:28 > 0:08:29THEY SQUEAL

0:08:29 > 0:08:31..to help bandage Butterfly's tail.

0:08:31 > 0:08:33BUTTERFLY YOWLS

0:08:33 > 0:08:35SNAKE HISSES

0:08:35 > 0:08:37DOG YAWNS LOUDLY

0:08:37 > 0:08:39But next, we're with Cheryl in Essex.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44Come on in, girls. Hi!

0:08:44 > 0:08:48Puppy patients are usually a joy for Cheryl and her team.

0:08:48 > 0:08:49Good boy!

0:08:50 > 0:08:51They're all escaping!

0:08:52 > 0:08:54I love puppies!

0:08:54 > 0:08:55Good puppy.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57Most of them are in

0:08:57 > 0:08:59for their first health checks and vaccinations.

0:09:01 > 0:09:05But sometimes, more worrying cases come through the door.

0:09:05 > 0:09:09Jane has a litter of nine French bulldog puppies at home,

0:09:09 > 0:09:11but there's one she's become concerned about.

0:09:17 > 0:09:18Come in with the puppy.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23Little Gaz is not even four weeks old.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25You're beautiful, aren't you?

0:09:27 > 0:09:29But he's looking under the weather.

0:09:29 > 0:09:30So, what have you noticed?

0:09:30 > 0:09:34He has some green gunge coming from his left nostril.

0:09:34 > 0:09:37All the other puppies are absolutely fine - it's just him.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40OK. You can never be too careful with puppies, cos obviously,

0:09:40 > 0:09:42they go downhill so quickly.

0:09:44 > 0:09:46A runny nose might not seem like a big deal,

0:09:46 > 0:09:48but for a puppy this young,

0:09:48 > 0:09:50it could be an early sign of pneumonia,

0:09:50 > 0:09:52which could be really serious.

0:09:54 > 0:09:56We don't want to take any chances,

0:09:56 > 0:09:59so I was going to recommend us taking a quick X-ray of him,

0:09:59 > 0:10:03just so we can make sure he doesn't have any early signs of pneumonia,

0:10:03 > 0:10:06cos, obviously, that would change our treatment.

0:10:06 > 0:10:08We'll do that now. I know!

0:10:11 > 0:10:14Because Gaz is so young and vulnerable...

0:10:14 > 0:10:15Come on, handsome.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18..Cheryl doesn't want to sedate him for the X-ray.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22Little Gazza. We're going to just tape him,

0:10:22 > 0:10:24so hopefully he stays in position.

0:10:24 > 0:10:26"No," he says, "I'm not going to."

0:10:26 > 0:10:28You want to go that way round instead?

0:10:28 > 0:10:29Sticky tape.

0:10:30 > 0:10:34A vet's secret weapon for dealing with wriggly puppies.

0:10:34 > 0:10:35X-ray.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40Such a good puppy! Was that scary?

0:10:41 > 0:10:45This quick chest X-ray will show up pneumonia straightaway.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48So it's the best way to diagnose the problem.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50So, this is his chest.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53That's his heart, and these are his lungs.

0:10:53 > 0:10:57So, if he had pneumonia, we would see a large patch of white.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00So, is little Gaz OK, Cheryl?

0:11:02 > 0:11:03No pneumonia.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06Perfect heart, no broken ribs, no trauma.

0:11:06 > 0:11:08Everything looks perfect.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11I think you're going to be OK, Gaz.

0:11:12 > 0:11:13Aren't you?

0:11:15 > 0:11:17Such good news that Gazza's OK.

0:11:17 > 0:11:19Looks like it's just a runny nose.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24Cheryl cleans up Gazza's little nose...

0:11:24 > 0:11:26Oh, you don't like that?

0:11:26 > 0:11:28Good puppy.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31..before taking him back to his owner, Jane.

0:11:31 > 0:11:32Here he is.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35It's good news. X-ray's completely perfect.

0:11:35 > 0:11:36No sign of pneumonia.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38You're lucky.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44With lots of TLC and regular checks...

0:11:44 > 0:11:46- Thank you very much.- No worries.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48..little Gaz should grow into a tough puppy.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54See you later.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58MEOW!

0:11:58 > 0:11:59SHE LAUGHS

0:11:59 > 0:12:00MEOW!

0:12:00 > 0:12:02WOOF!

0:12:02 > 0:12:05Back to Cat in Sheffield and that mardy moggy.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08Butterfly, flutter by this way!

0:12:11 > 0:12:13Previously, Cat hasn't dared change her tail bandage

0:12:13 > 0:12:15without sedating her.

0:12:15 > 0:12:16Stay there. Yes, I know.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20But today, she must be feeling brave.

0:12:20 > 0:12:21How's she doing?

0:12:21 > 0:12:23Er, not happy.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26She's going to try and change Butterfly's dressing

0:12:26 > 0:12:29while this feisty cat is wide awake.

0:12:29 > 0:12:31- MEOW! - Oh!

0:12:31 > 0:12:32I mean, you do like to be

0:12:32 > 0:12:34quite dramatic about the whole thing, don't you, darling?

0:12:34 > 0:12:36She's going to go for the shoulder.

0:12:36 > 0:12:40Are you going to go up? She likes to be up high, doesn't she, I hear?

0:12:40 > 0:12:43The problem is, it still sticks out behind you.

0:12:43 > 0:12:44Oh!

0:12:46 > 0:12:49Removing a bandage like this should be a pretty simple job,

0:12:49 > 0:12:51but we ARE dealing with Butterfly.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56Charlotte, do you want to come round the other side?

0:12:56 > 0:12:57I know.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00Here's chief cat-wrangler Charlotte and her trusty towel.

0:13:00 > 0:13:02BUTTERFLY YOWLS

0:13:02 > 0:13:05- Calm down!- I think it might take more than that, though.

0:13:05 > 0:13:07BUTTERFLY YOWLS

0:13:07 > 0:13:09Oh, dear! Oh, dear!

0:13:09 > 0:13:12Don't take it out on poor Charlotte.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14You will find nobody braver than a vet nurse

0:13:14 > 0:13:16in the face of an angry cat.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18BUTTERFLY YOWLS

0:13:18 > 0:13:21They are all that stands in between us vets and a mauling.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24Well, we're only trying to help, aren't we?

0:13:24 > 0:13:28But finally, Butterfly allows her to get her hands on that tail.

0:13:28 > 0:13:30There. Good girl.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32So, they always look a bit sticky and disgusting

0:13:32 > 0:13:33when you take them off.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36- Yeah.- But this is beautiful, beautiful healing tissue.

0:13:37 > 0:13:41It's definitely on the mend, but the battle's not over yet.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44Cat still has to get a fresh bandage on.

0:13:44 > 0:13:46I'm not sure I can watch!

0:13:46 > 0:13:48THEY SQUEAL

0:13:50 > 0:13:52Butterfly, this is enough.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55Right, do you know what? I'm going to go and get a little mask for her

0:13:55 > 0:13:56so she can't see where she's going.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00This mask might make Butterfly look like a superhero,

0:14:00 > 0:14:04but it's going to keep her safe and calm for the dressing.

0:14:04 > 0:14:06So, we're going sheepies today.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09You know, we really should see if they do ones with butterflies on.

0:14:09 > 0:14:11THEY LAUGH

0:14:13 > 0:14:15Right, then, my sweet.

0:14:15 > 0:14:16There we go.

0:14:16 > 0:14:18It's a result for vet Cat...

0:14:18 > 0:14:19Free the beast!

0:14:19 > 0:14:21..whose bravery has paid off.

0:14:22 > 0:14:25- We'll see you soon. Thank you. - Bye-bye.

0:14:25 > 0:14:27She's not that bad.

0:14:27 > 0:14:30There's a lot of drama when it comes to Butterfly,

0:14:30 > 0:14:31but generally, it's fine.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40She's so fluffy!

0:14:40 > 0:14:44Back to Rory in South London and that dog Coco, who swallowed a sock.

0:14:48 > 0:14:54This daft Doberman has developed an unhealthy taste for socks.

0:14:54 > 0:14:56And one is now stuck somewhere inside her.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01Assisted by nurse Andy and new-qualified vet Blaze...

0:15:01 > 0:15:04- Are we happy?- Yeah.- Ready to go?

0:15:04 > 0:15:05..Rory's going in.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09PARROT SQUAWKS

0:15:09 > 0:15:11If you're squeamish, look away now.

0:15:11 > 0:15:13So, let's see what we're dealing with.

0:15:15 > 0:15:18Ooh, well, there's something straightaway.

0:15:18 > 0:15:19What is that?

0:15:22 > 0:15:25Coco's small intestine looks red and swollen,

0:15:25 > 0:15:27so Rory thinks it's clear where the sock is.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30Massively thickened there and a completely different colour.

0:15:32 > 0:15:35Now he has the difficult job of cutting a hole

0:15:35 > 0:15:37in the small intestine wall.

0:15:37 > 0:15:39Oh, you silly dog!

0:15:39 > 0:15:40You silly, silly dog!

0:15:40 > 0:15:42It's time to remove it, I think.

0:15:44 > 0:15:49And it doesn't take long for Rory to start pulling the huge sock out.

0:15:49 > 0:15:50Oh, yeah!

0:15:54 > 0:15:56Ha-ha! Amazing!

0:15:58 > 0:15:59I'm not using that sock!

0:16:01 > 0:16:03Now the sock is out,

0:16:03 > 0:16:06Rory and his team must flush the organs with saline

0:16:06 > 0:16:07and stitch Coco up.

0:16:09 > 0:16:12Coco's owner has got a bit of work to do

0:16:12 > 0:16:15with training her not to eat smelly socks.

0:16:15 > 0:16:18Or any socks, for that matter.

0:16:18 > 0:16:19OK, that's her done.

0:16:21 > 0:16:23Time to have a look at this.

0:16:23 > 0:16:24Oh, gross!

0:16:26 > 0:16:28Oh, it stinks!

0:16:29 > 0:16:31Oh, crikey, that's awful!

0:16:36 > 0:16:37I'm going to be sick!

0:16:39 > 0:16:43That has got to be one of the worst things I have EVER smelt.

0:16:43 > 0:16:45Oh, know. I can smell it, still!

0:16:45 > 0:16:47It's caught in the mask.

0:16:49 > 0:16:51Four hours after the operation...

0:16:51 > 0:16:53Hey, sweetie.

0:16:53 > 0:16:54..Coco is ready to go home.

0:16:56 > 0:16:58And she's looking very sorry for herself.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04Coco's really sleepy, still,

0:17:04 > 0:17:07but she's got lots of pain relief on board, so she's nice and comfy

0:17:07 > 0:17:10and she'll be going home this evening for some TLC on the sofa.

0:17:13 > 0:17:15I know! Tell me about it!

0:17:17 > 0:17:22# I just wanna be part of your symphony

0:17:22 > 0:17:25# Will you hold me tight and not let go?... #

0:17:25 > 0:17:27After an anxious day waiting,

0:17:27 > 0:17:30owner Carl and his daughter Scout have come to take Coco home.
