0:00:58 > 0:01:02Cheryl's under pressure to perform major surgery on a very old pet.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04I'm really nervous about this.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06I would hate for anything to go wrong.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11Vet Cat helps a dog who's partial to eating pants.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14The washing basket's always there, isn't it, Perce?

0:01:14 > 0:01:16Just right for a snack if you're feeling hungry.

0:01:17 > 0:01:21And Rory's patient gets in a bit of a flap.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23I know, I know, I know.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27First, let's join Cheryl in Essex.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29Hello!

0:01:29 > 0:01:33Cheryl's always inundated with loads of different animals.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35Rabbits.

0:01:35 > 0:01:36Dogs.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39Cats.

0:01:39 > 0:01:40Foxes.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44No matter what animal, big or small...

0:01:44 > 0:01:45How is she? She's good.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49..if they need help, we'll do everything we can.

0:01:51 > 0:01:52Relax, relax.

0:01:54 > 0:02:00From routine operations to severe problems, Cheryl treats them all.

0:02:00 > 0:02:04Aren't you so cute?

0:02:04 > 0:02:07And booked in with her today is Jessie the Jack Russell.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10It might not look like it,

0:02:10 > 0:02:13but this chirpy terrier needs some serious surgery.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15- Shall we have a cup of tea? - JESSIE BARKS

0:02:16 > 0:02:18Jessie is a granny in dog years

0:02:18 > 0:02:22and owner Karen knows that there's nothing this old girl likes more

0:02:22 > 0:02:24than a nice, soothing cuppa.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28She has one every day.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33Is that nice?

0:02:33 > 0:02:35Despite Jessie's old age,

0:02:35 > 0:02:36she's no doddery doggie.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42And can give any young pup a run for their money.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46But recently something has been slowing her down.

0:02:50 > 0:02:51Yes.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54Jessie has developed two huge growths on her belly.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58Say please. Say please.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01They've been growing for months and now the larger one

0:03:01 > 0:03:03is as big as a grapefruit.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05Give me your paw.

0:03:05 > 0:03:06Good girl.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09She needs them removing, and fast.

0:03:09 > 0:03:13We know it will make her so much more comfortable not having this big

0:03:13 > 0:03:14thing underneath her.

0:03:14 > 0:03:18It's a risky operation, but a risk worth taking.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20She has got plenty of life still left in her.

0:03:20 > 0:03:25There are many more cups of tea left for her to drink, yes.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27Hopefully Cheryl's got the kettle on.

0:03:29 > 0:03:30Hello, Jess.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33- JESSIE WHINES - I know.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35It does seem like she knows, doesn't it?

0:03:37 > 0:03:38She's putting a brave face on it

0:03:38 > 0:03:41because that's what Jack Russells do,

0:03:41 > 0:03:43but you can tell she's nervous.

0:03:43 > 0:03:47Although there are lots of risks taking Jessie to surgery,

0:03:47 > 0:03:50the size of her lump means we are left with no other choice.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54I'll do everything, obviously, that we can,

0:03:54 > 0:03:56and fingers crossed everything will go well.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00I want to say to you, "Oh, she'll definitely be fine,"

0:04:00 > 0:04:02but there are a lot of risks and...

0:04:02 > 0:04:05- I know.- She might not be fine, you know?

0:04:06 > 0:04:09Now Karen has to wait all day until she hears

0:04:09 > 0:04:11how Jessie's surgery has gone.

0:04:13 > 0:04:15I'll see you later.

0:04:15 > 0:04:19While Cheryl faces one of the riskiest operations she's ever done.

0:04:19 > 0:04:23Bye-bye, baby.

0:04:23 > 0:04:28You're quite heavy for a little dog, aren't you?

0:04:28 > 0:04:30I'm really feeling the pressure,

0:04:30 > 0:04:33but I have to just keep reminding myself

0:04:33 > 0:04:36what a difference the surgery is going to make to her.

0:04:36 > 0:04:40Join us later as Jessie undergoes a life-changing operation.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52DOG BARKS

0:04:52 > 0:04:54Next, we're with Rory in south London.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56She trusts me, don't you?

0:04:56 > 0:04:59He sees all sorts of animals in the practice.

0:04:59 > 0:05:01Oh, wow, look at him!

0:05:01 > 0:05:03And not just cute, furry ones.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05I'm still waiting for the day

0:05:05 > 0:05:08someone brings me a giraffe or an elephant or something.

0:05:08 > 0:05:10Well, he's in luck today.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13His next patient is a little out of the ordinary.

0:05:13 > 0:05:15Meet Doris the chicken.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18Hi, Doris, how are you today?

0:05:20 > 0:05:25Owner Meg and dad Ian know that even chickens need check-ups.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27Still important to take the chickens to the vet

0:05:27 > 0:05:30cos they're like any other animal, they still need to be looked after.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35But Doris is not your average chicken.

0:05:35 > 0:05:39For starters, back at home her best friend is Lola the cat.

0:05:41 > 0:05:46She is very unique cos lots of other chickens you'll see,

0:05:46 > 0:05:52they're very chickeny, but she'll run around the garden,

0:05:52 > 0:05:53rolling around in mud.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58And when she thinks nobody's looking,

0:05:58 > 0:06:01Doris has a very naughty habit...

0:06:01 > 0:06:02DORIS CLUCKS

0:06:02 > 0:06:09..of sneaking into the kitchen and getting her beak into Lola's grub.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11Doris!

0:06:11 > 0:06:13And when she's finished poaching Lola's breakfast...

0:06:15 > 0:06:18..she gets cracking with everyone else's.

0:06:18 > 0:06:20Doris has been laying yummy eggs for years and years.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26Fried, boiled, scrambled or sunny side up.

0:06:28 > 0:06:30And that's no yolk.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33But something is up because this old bird hasn't laid for months.

0:06:33 > 0:06:39And to add to her woes, she's losing her feathers.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41Doris seems very out of sorts,

0:06:41 > 0:06:45but hopefully Rory knows exactly what's wrong.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52Doris, please.

0:06:52 > 0:06:56Chickens make really, really lovely pets, but unlike a dog or a cat,

0:06:56 > 0:06:58you don't cuddle them all the time

0:06:58 > 0:07:01so it's quite easy to miss if they're not well.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04Yep, doesn't look like Doris is the cuddling type.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07I know. You don't want to come out. I know you don't want to come out.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09There we go. Well done.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11Let's have a little listen to her ticker.

0:07:14 > 0:07:15Perfect.

0:07:15 > 0:07:17Do you want to have a listen? Pop those in your ears.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22- Cool.- It's really quick, isn't it?

0:07:22 > 0:07:24I think she's kind of nervous.

0:07:24 > 0:07:25Yeah, definitely.

0:07:25 > 0:07:29Also, generally, the smaller the animal,

0:07:29 > 0:07:30the quicker the heart rate.

0:07:30 > 0:07:34For an old bird, she's definitely got a good chicken ticker!

0:07:34 > 0:07:37But what about those scruffy feathers?

0:07:37 > 0:07:39Doris's feathers look a complete mess.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41But don't worry, that's completely normal.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44Once a year, chickens change their feathers and that's called moulting.

0:07:44 > 0:07:46You can see where her lovely new little feathers

0:07:46 > 0:07:48- are coming through, can't you?- Yeah.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50Doris seems to be in good shape,

0:07:50 > 0:07:54but Rory still needs to bottom out why she's not laying.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00Join us later when things get messy.

0:08:00 > 0:08:01Oh, look at that.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04Bit of a protest from Doris.

0:08:04 > 0:08:08She doesn't want to come to the vet again.

0:08:08 > 0:08:09And in Sheffield,

0:08:09 > 0:08:12we meet the hungry hound with a taste for forbidden foods.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15She was eating a whole box of grapes.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24Back to Essex with Cheryl and Jessie the Jack Russell.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27Hi, Jessie.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29Jessie is an old dog

0:08:29 > 0:08:31who's young at heart.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34But she is being slowed down by a series of nasty growths.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39She's got two huge lumps on her belly

0:08:39 > 0:08:42which are making her feel totally rubbish.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45And now she's booked in for a life-changing surgery

0:08:45 > 0:08:47to have them removed.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50I'm really nervous about this cos she's so well,

0:08:50 > 0:08:52I'd hate for anything to go wrong.

0:08:52 > 0:08:54The longer Jessie's under anaesthetic,

0:08:54 > 0:08:57the more risk she has of not making it.

0:08:57 > 0:09:00You've got to be really brave for one scary needle.

0:09:00 > 0:09:02Good girl, good girl. There you go.

0:09:03 > 0:09:07So it's really important that we do this operation as quickly as we can,

0:09:07 > 0:09:10to just get those lumps removed.

0:09:10 > 0:09:11It is such a big lump.

0:09:13 > 0:09:17Now Jessie is safely under,

0:09:17 > 0:09:20the team wastes no time in getting her into theatre,

0:09:20 > 0:09:22and Cheryl and vet nurse Sarah

0:09:22 > 0:09:25get straight to work on removing the larger lump.

0:09:25 > 0:09:27This one's the one giving her pain.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32This huge growth doesn't want to budge, and to make matters worse,

0:09:32 > 0:09:36there's a big vein that Cheryl has to carefully cut around.

0:09:36 > 0:09:37Massive, isn't it?

0:09:37 > 0:09:39Absolutely!

0:09:41 > 0:09:43But that's not the only problem.

0:09:43 > 0:09:45Just a little bit worried about her heart rate.

0:09:45 > 0:09:48Cos it's... It's dropping.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51The stress of surgery is already proving too much

0:09:51 > 0:09:54for Jessie and her heart rate is plummeting.

0:09:55 > 0:09:57Every second counts.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00Sometimes, I feel like I can't work fast enough

0:10:00 > 0:10:04when a patient's in distress, but my experience has taught me

0:10:04 > 0:10:07to keep a cool head and focus on the task.

0:10:07 > 0:10:10But after some skilful surgery...

0:10:10 > 0:10:12Time for that big moment.

0:10:12 > 0:10:16..Cheryl successfully removes the larger of the two lumps.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19- PARROT SQUAWKS - If you're squeamish, look away now!

0:10:20 > 0:10:22Yep, it doesn't look pretty.

0:10:22 > 0:10:24- It's horrible, isn't it?- It's huge.

0:10:25 > 0:10:29But it's fascinating if you fancy a career as a vet.

0:10:30 > 0:10:31For anyone else...

0:10:33 > 0:10:35..it's safe to open your eyes again.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39That's a much better-sounding heart rate, isn't it?

0:10:39 > 0:10:40- It's better now, yeah.- Good.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42And with the worst over,

0:10:42 > 0:10:45Jessie's body almost instantly starts to recover.

0:10:47 > 0:10:49The larger lump was a challenge,

0:10:49 > 0:10:51but the smaller one comes off in seconds.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54Wow, that was a lot easier, wasn't it?

0:10:54 > 0:10:57This one's more cosmetic than anything else.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01The wounds are stitched and Jessie heads off to recover.

0:11:01 > 0:11:03It's really important now to keep her warm.

0:11:04 > 0:11:06Just make her comfortable now.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09And sit with her until she's fully awake.

0:11:09 > 0:11:10Good girl.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13I'm so relieved she survived the surgery.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15I just hope she makes it through recovery.

0:11:17 > 0:11:18Stick around to see how Jessie gets on

0:11:18 > 0:11:20now those lumps have been removed.

0:11:26 > 0:11:28Wow, that was a snog.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31Let's go to Sheffield to see Cat the vet.

0:11:32 > 0:11:36The city's pets are always getting themselves into a pickle,

0:11:36 > 0:11:39especially when it comes to eating things they shouldn't.

0:11:39 > 0:11:40Try not to worry. As soon as we've got him here

0:11:40 > 0:11:44and we've made him sick, he'll be absolutely fine, OK?

0:11:44 > 0:11:47There is no end to the strange things pets will eat.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49The dog had eaten a child's doll.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52Ask any vet, we all have a tale to tell.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55The X-ray was awesome because it just looked like it was pregnant.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59There was just a tiny little baby floating about in it.

0:11:59 > 0:12:01Golf balls, toys, hair elastics.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03Sometimes I think I've seen it all.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07Well, this might be a new one.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10Owner Danny is here with Percy the King Charles spaniel,

0:12:10 > 0:12:13who has acquired a taste for something rather unusual.

0:12:13 > 0:12:17He's ate a pair of pants before in the past and he's done it again.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19Can't believe you've eaten some more pants!

0:12:19 > 0:12:21Don't be embarrassed, Percy.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23No-one's judging you here.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25Would you like a biscuit to wash those pants down?

0:12:25 > 0:12:29Would you?

0:12:29 > 0:12:32At some point or other, potentially in the past fortnight,

0:12:32 > 0:12:36he's eaten a pair of pants, or a bit of a pair of pants.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38The washing basket's always there, isn't it, Perce?

0:12:38 > 0:12:42Just right for a snack if you're feeling hungry.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45It sounds funny, but it could be really serious.

0:12:47 > 0:12:49We might even have to operate.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51So how has he been tummy-wise?

0:12:51 > 0:12:53Any vomiting? Any diarrhoea?

0:12:53 > 0:12:56Everything's fine, eating, toilet, exactly the same.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59Everything's fine. He has been sick once but that's because he's been

0:12:59 > 0:13:00trying to eat grass.

0:13:00 > 0:13:02Is there anything Percy doesn't eat?

0:13:02 > 0:13:05If something gets stuck in the intestinal system,

0:13:05 > 0:13:08so in the guts themselves, you will always see signs.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11There will be vomiting, there will be pain,

0:13:11 > 0:13:14so I think he's going to be fine, yeah.

0:13:14 > 0:13:15I think so.

0:13:17 > 0:13:19If Percy had got something stuck,

0:13:19 > 0:13:21we would definitely know about it after two weeks,

0:13:21 > 0:13:24so I'm fairly confident that he's pooed them out.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30Looks like it's a lucky escape for Percy the pants eater.

0:13:30 > 0:13:33You really should quit that habit, though, Percy.

0:13:34 > 0:13:38Sometimes, though, pets eat human food that can be really dangerous.

0:13:38 > 0:13:42Coffee, chocolate, grapes and raisins can all be fatal,

0:13:42 > 0:13:45so we need to see those pets as soon as possible.

0:13:48 > 0:13:50Cue Coco, a Labrador with a big appetite

0:13:50 > 0:13:54who's making a reluctant trip to the vets.

0:13:54 > 0:13:59This is Coco and today she was eating a whole box of grapes,

0:13:59 > 0:14:01which is really bad for dogs,

0:14:01 > 0:14:05so we're just coming in to see for her to be made to be sick.

0:14:07 > 0:14:10Eva and Coco are only too familiar with the process.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13This hungry hound has an impressive track record.

0:14:13 > 0:14:14She did it on Christmas Day,

0:14:14 > 0:14:19she unwrapped my sister's really fancy chocolate that she got

0:14:19 > 0:14:20and was really, really sick,

0:14:20 > 0:14:25and she's eaten Royal icing once and her poo was blue,

0:14:25 > 0:14:28so she likes food and doesn't really mind

0:14:28 > 0:14:30if it will cause her harm or not.

0:14:32 > 0:14:33Coco knows the drill.

0:14:33 > 0:14:35It's an injection to make her sick,

0:14:35 > 0:14:39then nursing assistant Emily has the lovely job of making sure nature

0:14:39 > 0:14:40takes its course.

0:14:43 > 0:14:47Hopefully it will dissolve, come up and she'll just vomit.

0:16:44 > 0:16:46as that's the sign they're not well,

0:16:46 > 0:16:48and may also be why they're not laying eggs.
