0:00:03 > 0:00:05I'm Stacey Dooley and we are back
0:00:05 > 0:00:08for another series of The Pets Factor,
0:00:08 > 0:00:10checking in with awesome vets
0:00:10 > 0:00:12helping sick pets get back on their paws
0:00:12 > 0:00:16again and the best part for me is I get to hang out with loads of
0:00:16 > 0:00:18cool animals, like these guys.
0:00:21 > 0:00:23Meet passionate pet lover, Cheryl.
0:00:23 > 0:00:26And that is how she broke it in the first place.
0:00:27 > 0:00:31The biggest softie of them all, gentle James.
0:00:31 > 0:00:34Hello Stu. Come on, come for a little swim.
0:00:35 > 0:00:38The vet who talks to the animals, Cat.
0:00:38 > 0:00:40You are a snorty pig!
0:00:40 > 0:00:42Oh, no, don't eat the tape measure.
0:00:42 > 0:00:45And the one with all the best moves, Rory.
0:00:46 > 0:00:49Look at that... Oh, wow, that was a snog!
0:00:52 > 0:00:54They're the vets with The Pets Factor.
0:01:01 > 0:01:03Coming up on today's show -
0:01:04 > 0:01:07James's patient, Ziggy, has a poorly tail,
0:01:07 > 0:01:09which is giving him plenty to bark about.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11Oh, no!
0:01:11 > 0:01:12ZIGGY BARKS
0:01:12 > 0:01:14CAT MEOWS
0:01:14 > 0:01:17Rory has a worrying emergency on his hands.
0:01:18 > 0:01:19I'm concerned.
0:01:21 > 0:01:23Good morning. Morning.
0:01:23 > 0:01:26And vet, Cat, helps some hero dogs to save lives.
0:01:26 > 0:01:27You're such a good boy, aren't you?
0:01:30 > 0:01:33First, we're off to Bristol to catch up with James.
0:01:33 > 0:01:34Hey!
0:01:36 > 0:01:40Gentle James always has a smile and a cuddle for the animals that come
0:01:40 > 0:01:42- to see him.- Good boy!
0:01:42 > 0:01:45There is nothing that brightens up my day more than a waiting room
0:01:45 > 0:01:47full of waggy tails. I love it.
0:01:47 > 0:01:48We all do.
0:01:52 > 0:01:54And James's patient today is loving
0:01:54 > 0:01:57the attention he's getting at the practice.
0:01:57 > 0:01:59Hi, there, have you got Ziggy?
0:01:59 > 0:02:01Hello. Aren't you sweet?
0:02:01 > 0:02:03Hi. Hello.
0:02:03 > 0:02:05Oh, yeah, hello.
0:02:07 > 0:02:10This lazy lurcher loves lying about on the sofa,
0:02:11 > 0:02:14but when Ziggy hears "walkies",
0:02:14 > 0:02:17it really gets his tail in a spin and he's ready for take off.
0:02:19 > 0:02:22Unfortunately, though, it sometimes gets him into trouble.
0:02:22 > 0:02:23BIRD SQUAWKS
0:02:25 > 0:02:28And a recent walk in the woods was no exception,
0:02:28 > 0:02:30but this time it's serious.
0:02:30 > 0:02:31ZIGGY YELPS
0:02:31 > 0:02:34So, it's off to the vets to see if they can fix it.
0:02:35 > 0:02:39Right, so, do you just want to tell me what's been going on?
0:02:39 > 0:02:41Yep. He went in the woods yesterday.
0:02:41 > 0:02:42Didn't realise till I got home.
0:02:42 > 0:02:43- Yeah.- Blood everywhere.
0:02:43 > 0:02:45So does he have a very waggy tail?
0:02:45 > 0:02:47- Yes.- He smacks it against things and then...
0:02:47 > 0:02:50Yeah. It's quite a common problem that we have with dogs with quite
0:02:50 > 0:02:53thin skin and a very waggy tail basically,
0:02:53 > 0:02:54so every time the tail hits up
0:02:54 > 0:02:56against a wall or a chair or something it...
0:02:56 > 0:02:59Oh, hello. Hello. Hello.
0:02:59 > 0:03:03Every time it hits against something, it causes a wound.
0:03:03 > 0:03:06What you doing up there?
0:03:06 > 0:03:07Hey?
0:03:08 > 0:03:11It's a case of a dog who's happy for his own good.
0:03:11 > 0:03:14He's wagged his tail so much that it just won't heal.
0:03:14 > 0:03:16And the solution to this might seem a little bit drastic.
0:03:17 > 0:03:21I'm going to suggest that we actually amputate his tail tip,
0:03:21 > 0:03:24which I know sounds a little bit extreme but as soon as you get a cut
0:03:24 > 0:03:25there, one wag of his tail...
0:03:25 > 0:03:27And it's not pleasant for him because
0:03:27 > 0:03:31he's constantly got a wound there that hurts.
0:03:31 > 0:03:32Ah, poor Ziggy,
0:03:32 > 0:03:33it's not quite as bad as it sounds
0:03:33 > 0:03:37because I'm only taking a small portion of his tail,
0:03:37 > 0:03:39but I'll still make sure he's plenty to wag.
0:03:39 > 0:03:41See you later.
0:03:41 > 0:03:44You be good! Don't be naughty.
0:03:44 > 0:03:46Did you hear that, Ziggy? "Don't be naughty."
0:03:47 > 0:03:48I'm sure he won't be.
0:03:51 > 0:03:53Ziggy, naughty?!
0:03:53 > 0:03:54- No way!- Come on Zigs.
0:03:57 > 0:03:59Just give your little bottom a push.
0:03:59 > 0:04:00There we go. That's it.
0:04:02 > 0:04:06But did anyone mention he doesn't like to be on his own?
0:04:09 > 0:04:11He's going to bark the house down, I think, isn't he?
0:04:15 > 0:04:17Wow, Ziggy!
0:04:17 > 0:04:18Chatterbox!
0:04:19 > 0:04:23Ah, Ziggy! He's not in any pain, but
0:04:23 > 0:04:26I think he just wants some attention.
0:04:26 > 0:04:29It looks like it's going to be a lively morning at the practice.
0:04:32 > 0:04:33That was bliss!
0:04:33 > 0:04:35I might go for a little nap.
0:04:35 > 0:04:39Don't worry, Ziggy, you'll be getting plenty of attention soon.
0:04:48 > 0:04:50Come on, big man!
0:04:50 > 0:04:53Next, we're off to see Rory in South London.
0:04:53 > 0:04:55Hello, guy.
0:04:55 > 0:04:59Although he works at a small practice, some days can be nonstop.
0:04:59 > 0:05:00This must be Betty.
0:05:02 > 0:05:03Hello.
0:05:04 > 0:05:06I'm still a growing lad and if I get
0:05:06 > 0:05:09a spare five minutes all I want to do is eat.
0:05:09 > 0:05:10And my favourite sandwich?
0:05:10 > 0:05:13Salami, salad and salt and vinegar crisps.
0:05:14 > 0:05:16Mmh...crisp sandwich!
0:05:18 > 0:05:20It defo needs a bit of mayo on that, though.
0:05:24 > 0:05:27But tonight there's no time to even think about food...
0:05:28 > 0:05:31..as an emergency case has just come through the door.
0:05:31 > 0:05:33- There we go.- This must be Ruskin.
0:05:33 > 0:05:34Yeah, that's Ruskin.
0:05:34 > 0:05:38Owners Olivia, Amy and their mum Rebecca have brought in Ruskin,
0:05:38 > 0:05:40who's feeling awful right now.
0:05:43 > 0:05:46Like every cat, when Ruskin's got to go...
0:05:47 > 0:05:49..he's got to go.
0:05:49 > 0:05:52And although Ruskin is always busting,
0:05:52 > 0:05:55he's been struggling to do his business.
0:05:55 > 0:05:58So, he needs to make another little visit to Rory at the vets.
0:06:00 > 0:06:01- What's going on?- He's not happy.
0:06:01 > 0:06:03Oh, matey.
0:06:03 > 0:06:05He was sick a couple of times.
0:06:05 > 0:06:07I think just not really himself.
0:06:07 > 0:06:09OK, sweetie.
0:06:09 > 0:06:11Ah, you're so petrified, aren't you, sweetie?
0:06:11 > 0:06:14Honestly, he's frightened of his own shadow.
0:06:14 > 0:06:16This is all just too much.
0:06:16 > 0:06:18He's got quite a large bladder.
0:06:18 > 0:06:20I'm actually going to try and express that.
0:06:20 > 0:06:22If I can just pop him over to you,
0:06:22 > 0:06:26just put a hand on him to make it him a bit for comfortable.
0:06:26 > 0:06:29Ruskin's bladder feels really hard and swollen,
0:06:29 > 0:06:31so Rory thinks it's time to give him
0:06:31 > 0:06:33a gentle squeeze to help get the wee out.
0:06:33 > 0:06:36This is probably going to go all over my hand.
0:06:36 > 0:06:43- I know! I know!- Despite pressing on his bladder, nothing is coming out.
0:06:43 > 0:06:45I'm concerned...
0:06:45 > 0:06:47- OK.- ..that he may be blocked.
0:06:47 > 0:06:49- OK.- OK, he might have a blocked bladder.
0:06:50 > 0:06:52One more time, fella.
0:06:54 > 0:06:55RUSKIN MEOWS LOUDLY
0:06:55 > 0:06:58- I'm sorry. I'm sorry. - Still nothing.
0:06:58 > 0:07:01The situation is becoming really serious.
0:07:02 > 0:07:04If I can't unblock him,
0:07:04 > 0:07:06he needs to go to an emergency out-of-hours service.
0:07:06 > 0:07:08- Oh, my God. OK. - So it's quite serious.
0:07:08 > 0:07:11Hopefully, we're going to be able to do something now.
0:07:11 > 0:07:16OK? He is nice and strong, but we need to get his bladder unblocked.
0:07:16 > 0:07:19If I don't get that wee out of him super quickly,
0:07:19 > 0:07:20his bladder could burst.
0:07:20 > 0:07:22Or, those toxins could all build up,
0:07:22 > 0:07:24go back into his blood and poison him.
0:07:25 > 0:07:26Is that sore?
0:07:27 > 0:07:30I am determined not to let this happen to Ruskin.
0:07:32 > 0:07:34Later, Rory needs backup...
0:07:34 > 0:07:36- Zo?- Yeah.- Can I grab you, please?
0:07:36 > 0:07:38..to save this desperately ill cat.
0:07:40 > 0:07:42And James gears up for some messy surgery.
0:07:42 > 0:07:45Tails bleed a lot.
0:07:45 > 0:07:47So, we kind of have to act quite quick.
0:07:48 > 0:07:50Yeah!
0:07:50 > 0:07:55But first, let's see what's in store for vet, Cat, in Sheffield.
0:07:55 > 0:07:57Cat always has a cool head when it
0:07:57 > 0:08:00comes to sorting out the city's poorly pets.
0:08:00 > 0:08:03And then you wrap her up, like a little piggy parcel!
0:08:05 > 0:08:08There you go. It's like feeding a baby!
0:08:08 > 0:08:09Good girl!
0:08:10 > 0:08:15In this job, you need to think on your feet and expect the unexpected.
0:08:15 > 0:08:18But today the waiting room is full of healthy dogs
0:08:18 > 0:08:23who aren't here because they need help, they are here to help others.
0:08:23 > 0:08:27So, we're here this morning because the pet blood bank are visiting and
0:08:27 > 0:08:31they're a charity who come and see us at the practice once every month
0:08:31 > 0:08:34and they collect blood from our patients.
0:08:36 > 0:08:38The doggy donors here today probably
0:08:38 > 0:08:41have no idea of the amazing job they are doing.
0:08:41 > 0:08:44Cat, on the other hand, couldn't do without them.
0:08:44 > 0:08:46We have emergencies all the time at the practice.
0:08:46 > 0:08:49And sometimes, just like humans,
0:08:49 > 0:08:51dogs need to be given blood to make them better.
0:08:51 > 0:08:54I just want to order some pet red blood cells, please.
0:08:56 > 0:08:59When this happens, we call the charity
0:08:59 > 0:09:01and blood arrives within the hour.
0:09:01 > 0:09:02It's a real life-saver.
0:09:05 > 0:09:09And one of those life-savers is Hannah's dog, Tops the Greyhound.
0:09:09 > 0:09:13He's just one of the many regular donors at the practice.
0:09:13 > 0:09:15When Tops donates blood,
0:09:16 > 0:09:18I think it's quite heroic.
0:09:18 > 0:09:22And his family have a special reason to be so proud of him.
0:09:22 > 0:09:26Our previous dog, Dusty, received some blood.
0:09:26 > 0:09:31Dusty had a big operation to remove a tumour in his lung and without the
0:09:31 > 0:09:35blood, basically, he wouldn't have survived the operation.
0:09:35 > 0:09:37Now Tops is helping others like Dusty
0:09:37 > 0:09:40and he's been giving his blood for two years.
0:09:42 > 0:09:43Tops absolutely loves it.
0:09:43 > 0:09:45He really enjoys it.
0:09:45 > 0:09:46He's laid back.
0:09:46 > 0:09:49When they actually do the procedure, he's almost dropping off to sleep.
0:09:49 > 0:09:51He's so relaxed.
0:09:51 > 0:09:52He's fantastic.
0:09:54 > 0:09:56- Good morning.- Morning.
0:09:56 > 0:09:57Hi, Tops.
0:09:57 > 0:10:00Today is Top's seventh donation and it looks like
0:10:00 > 0:10:01he can't wait to get started.
0:10:01 > 0:10:05Well, he's quite an expert at it now, isn't he?
0:10:05 > 0:10:09You're all set, ready to go, aren't you Tops?
0:10:09 > 0:10:10Ah, well done!
0:10:11 > 0:10:13Tops knows the drill.
0:10:13 > 0:10:15It's up on the table for a cuddle.
0:10:15 > 0:10:18So, we just have to clean his skin so that it's nice and sterile.
0:10:18 > 0:10:21He doesn't even notice the needle going in.
0:10:21 > 0:10:23You're such a good boy, aren't you?
0:10:23 > 0:10:26Now Tops gets to lie back and chill out.
0:10:29 > 0:10:32So, we take just under a pint of blood.
0:10:32 > 0:10:36Tops' is speeding along nicely at the moment.
0:10:36 > 0:10:39Each bag of blood that Tops gives can be donated to four dogs.
0:10:39 > 0:10:44So far he's saved at least 28 lives, which I think is incredible.
0:10:45 > 0:10:48And Tops isn't the only hero here today,
0:10:48 > 0:10:5011 dogs have come to the practice,
0:10:50 > 0:10:55potentially saving 44 of their doggy pals.
0:10:55 > 0:10:57Hi! How is he doing?
0:10:57 > 0:10:58Was he very brave?
0:10:58 > 0:11:01Pretty much slept the whole way through the donation.
0:11:01 > 0:11:05- Chilled out boy.- Having a lie on a lovely comfy bed and look at this,
0:11:05 > 0:11:07a massage.
0:11:07 > 0:11:09It's like spa treatment.
0:11:09 > 0:11:11He'll want to stay here all day.
0:11:11 > 0:11:14He's absolutely loving this.
0:11:14 > 0:11:17# We could be heroes... #
0:11:17 > 0:11:19Who's a good boy?
0:11:21 > 0:11:23It's all in a day's work for Tops
0:11:23 > 0:11:25and he knows the best bit is still to come -
0:11:25 > 0:11:31a tasty snack, a new toy and a cool neckerchief.
0:11:31 > 0:11:33It's amazing thing that your dog can do, isn't it?
0:11:33 > 0:11:36And as you can see, it doesn't take...it doesn't take much.
0:11:36 > 0:11:38- It's not difficult, is it?- No.
0:11:38 > 0:11:39It doesn't hurt, even.
0:11:39 > 0:11:42Does it make you proud of him, to think how many lives he's saved?
0:11:42 > 0:11:43- Yeah.- Yeah.
0:11:52 > 0:11:54Mate, hey! I'm talking to you.
0:11:55 > 0:11:58Time to get back to Bristol with James and Ziggy.
0:11:58 > 0:11:59ZIGGY WHINES
0:11:59 > 0:12:04This noisy lurcher is about to have the tip of his poorly tail removed,
0:12:04 > 0:12:06after cutting it in the woods.
0:12:09 > 0:12:11A bit of sleepy juice there. Hopefully you'll go a bit more calm.
0:12:13 > 0:12:16And now Ziggy is out for the count, the team are ready to go.
0:12:16 > 0:12:19- Are you ready to chop off a tail? - I'm ready to chop off the tail.
0:12:21 > 0:12:25Without surgery, Ziggy will always be in pain with his wounded tail,
0:12:25 > 0:12:27so the best option is for James to remove some of it.
0:12:27 > 0:12:30But that's not as simple as it sounds.
0:12:30 > 0:12:33The most important thing for this is
0:12:33 > 0:12:36to get my initial incision the right shape.
0:12:37 > 0:12:41So, it needs to be neat and it needs to heal as quick as possible.
0:12:43 > 0:12:45If James doesn't get this right, though,
0:12:45 > 0:12:48Ziggy might have to have further surgery
0:12:48 > 0:12:50to trim even more of his precious tail.
0:12:50 > 0:12:55Tails bleed a lot, so we kind of have to act quite quick.
0:12:55 > 0:12:57Otherwise, the whole theatre just gets covered in blood.
0:12:59 > 0:13:02- PARROT:- If you're squeamish, look away now!
0:13:07 > 0:13:08I've got a few vessels that I've...
0:13:10 > 0:13:12It's already starting to bleed quite a lot, as you can see.
0:13:15 > 0:13:17James needs to stem the blood flow quickly...
0:13:19 > 0:13:21..using forceps to clamp the vein.
0:13:21 > 0:13:23You just end up with so much blood.
0:13:24 > 0:13:26With the blood flow stopped,
0:13:26 > 0:13:29he can safely remove the damaged section of Ziggy's tail.
0:13:29 > 0:13:31This is precision work.
0:13:31 > 0:13:35You can take it off, but you definitely can't put it back on.
0:13:35 > 0:13:36Moment of truth.
0:13:40 > 0:13:42There we go. That's our little tail.
0:13:45 > 0:13:46With the damaged tip removed,
0:13:46 > 0:13:49James now makes sure Ziggy's new-look tail
0:13:49 > 0:13:50will make him the envy of his friends.
0:13:50 > 0:13:53What we don't want him to do is to go out and bash his tail and
0:13:53 > 0:13:55then everything is all opened back up again.
0:13:58 > 0:13:59Done.
0:14:01 > 0:14:03And that's a "tail" with a happy ending!
0:14:03 > 0:14:05JAMES LAUGHS
0:14:06 > 0:14:07That's good, he can wake up.
0:14:09 > 0:14:11I'm going to need your earplugs again, I think.
0:14:12 > 0:14:15I think everyone is going to need their earplugs.
0:14:15 > 0:14:18Enjoy the peace while you can,
0:14:18 > 0:14:22because it's not long before Ziggy is ready for his grand finale.

0:14:47 > 0:14:50I think it's time for Ziggy leave the building.
0:14:51 > 0:14:52Here he is!
0:14:54 > 0:14:56Oh, there you go!
0:14:56 > 0:14:57- How are you?- That's all he wanted.
0:14:57 > 0:14:59How are you? Has he been noisy?
0:14:59 > 0:15:02Well, I mean, I'd be lying if I said he's been sitting in his cage all
0:15:02 > 0:15:05quiet, don't get me wrong. I think he's ready to come home.
0:15:06 > 0:15:09Off you trot, Ziggy. Rest your new tail,
0:15:09 > 0:15:12and you might want to give those vocal cords a rest as well.
0:15:19 > 0:15:21Excuse me, will you come down, please?
0:15:22 > 0:15:24Let's head back to London to see how
0:15:24 > 0:15:26things are going with Rory and Ruskin.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33- Zo?- Yeah.- Can I grab you, please?
0:15:33 > 0:15:37Poor Ruskin, the four-year-old cat, is bursting for a wee.
0:15:37 > 0:15:39But hasn't been able to get it all out.
0:15:40 > 0:15:42He is very, very, very nervous.

0:15:44 > 0:15:46RUSKIN MEOWS
0:15:46 > 0:15:48It's OK.
0:15:48 > 0:15:52Rory and vet nurse, Zoe, are having one more go at gently squeezing his
0:15:52 > 0:15:54belly to force the wee out.
0:15:55 > 0:15:58This is definitely a job for vets only.
0:15:58 > 0:16:00When a cat can't go to the toilet properly,
0:16:00 > 0:16:02you know you're in trouble.
0:16:02 > 0:16:04- RUSKIN MEOWS - Sh-Shh-Sh.
0:16:04 > 0:16:07So if I can't get Ruskin to pee by pressing on his belly,
0:16:07 > 0:16:09the only other option is a risky surgery.
0:16:11 > 0:16:15But it looks like Rory's persistence is starting to payoff.
0:16:15 > 0:16:17- Oh, he's done a wee...- Yeah?
0:16:17 > 0:16:18Great. Well, that's really good news.

0:16:31 > 0:16:34That wee absolutely stinks,
0:16:34 > 0:16:37but I cannot tell you how relieved I am to see it.
0:16:37 > 0:16:38Look what mess you've made, eh?
0:16:38 > 0:16:43That was all you. And poor Ruskin, he must be feeling so much better.
0:16:43 > 0:16:46Time to deliver the good news to his anxious owners.
0:16:46 > 0:16:48I've managed to make him pee.
0:16:48 > 0:16:50He's actually chilled out a huge amount as well.
0:16:50 > 0:16:51I think he was a little bit sore...
0:16:51 > 0:16:53- Was he in pain? - ..a little bit sore in there.
0:16:53 > 0:16:56- Poor Ruskin.- I've just completely emptied his bladder manually.
0:16:56 > 0:17:00- OK.- And he did cover the floor, of course, but that's fine.
0:17:00 > 0:17:01I'd much rather him do that.
0:17:01 > 0:17:03Give him lots of love, girls.
0:17:04 > 0:17:06- Poor Ruskin.- He's feeling a little bit better.
0:17:06 > 0:17:08I think you can see, he's still sort of terrified.
0:17:08 > 0:17:10- Yes.- I think he is actually...
0:17:10 > 0:17:12Not in pain.
0:17:12 > 0:17:15Ruskin has been through a lot and he must be exhausted,
0:17:15 > 0:17:17but with the help of some pain relief,
0:17:17 > 0:17:18he'll be back to normal in no time.
0:17:18 > 0:17:20MUSIC: Passport Home by JD Cooper
0:17:26 > 0:17:27I'll tell you what, that's a busy end to the day,
0:17:27 > 0:17:29but I'm so relieved that that wasn't blocked.
0:17:29 > 0:17:32If that had been blocked, we'd have been in trouble and we'd be
0:17:32 > 0:17:34here till gone ten o'clock.
0:17:38 > 0:17:41Well done, Rory, mate, that is some top vetting.

0:18:21 > 0:18:23- Oh!- That looks great, doesn't it?
0:18:23 > 0:18:24I'm so pleased with that.
0:18:24 > 0:18:28It's healed up brilliantly, and it's not going to split open again,
0:18:28 > 0:18:29which was always the worry.
0:18:30 > 0:18:34Now James is happy, he can remove Ziggy's stitches.

0:19:17 > 0:19:18Now, remember Ruskin,
