0:00:03 > 0:00:06I'm Stacey Dooley. I'm mad about animals,

0:00:06 > 0:00:09so it's upsetting to see them sick or injured.

0:00:09 > 0:00:12But when they are, help is at hand at places like this,

0:00:12 > 0:00:16where amazing vets work their magic to help make them better.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18Hello!

0:00:18 > 0:00:20Meet passionate pet lover Cheryl...

0:00:20 > 0:00:25And that is how she broke it in the first place.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27..the biggest softie of them all, gentle James.

0:00:27 > 0:00:29My name's Julie.

0:00:29 > 0:00:31Come on, Swanny, come for a little swim.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35..the vet who talks to the animals, Cat...

0:00:35 > 0:00:37You are a snorty pig!

0:00:37 > 0:00:39Oh, no, don't eat the tape measure.

0:00:39 > 0:00:42..and the one with all the best moves, Rory.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46Oh, look at that. Oh, wow, that was a snog.

0:00:49 > 0:00:51They're the vets with The Pets Factor.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01Coming up on today's show...

0:01:01 > 0:01:04Cat the vet helps a hungry hound who's piling on the pounds...

0:01:04 > 0:01:09Because you're not able to exercise him, he is getting too big.

0:01:09 > 0:01:10..it's a testing time for Rory...

0:01:10 > 0:01:12- ALL:- Hi, Rory!

0:01:12 > 0:01:13..when he goes back to school...

0:01:13 > 0:01:16Oh, sweetie! OK, you volunteered yourself.

0:01:16 > 0:01:20..and James needs a steady hand to perform a very delicate procedure.

0:01:20 > 0:01:25One slip now and my needle is going to go straight into his eye.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27First, we're in Sheffield with Cat the vet.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30Hi, guys, you all right?

0:01:30 > 0:01:33She treats animals of all shapes and sizes.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35Oh, it's not that bad.

0:01:35 > 0:01:39- From wriggly rats... - Hang on, hang on, hang on, hang on. - ..to humongous hounds.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41The small animals are cute,

0:01:41 > 0:01:43but sometimes they can be hard to keep hold of.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45Oh, you are a wriggly wriggle. Eh...

0:01:45 > 0:01:47Right, come back.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51I like the big chunky ones, who aren't going to give me the slip.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55So she'll have no trouble with today's patient.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57Winston is a bruiser of a British bulldog,

0:01:57 > 0:02:00and the latest addition to Michael's family.

0:02:00 > 0:02:01He's 11 months.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04Got him from RSPCA Sheffield five months ago.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06Yeah, he's one of the family!

0:02:06 > 0:02:09But this much-loved pet is eating them out of house and home.

0:02:10 > 0:02:14Like his namesake, the old Prime Minister, Winston Churchill,

0:02:14 > 0:02:17this bulldog is British through and through.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20He loves all things British.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22Especially the food.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24But that big appetite comes at a cost.

0:02:27 > 0:02:31He's piling on the pounds and that's hurting his dodgy hips,

0:02:31 > 0:02:32making him clumsy...

0:02:32 > 0:02:33CRASH!

0:02:33 > 0:02:35..and the size of a small house.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42Hopefully vet Cat can help this big boy out.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46Winston! Come on, then! Let's have you. Good boy!

0:02:46 > 0:02:47Just from watching him walk,

0:02:47 > 0:02:51it's really clear that Winston's weight is holding him back.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54Bless him, he's not the most elegant of movers.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56He's not very good on them, is he? He's really quite pottering.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58- It's mostly his back legs.- Yeah.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00And he's a bit slobbery.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03I'm covered in Winston's slime already! We've only just met.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05Right, let me listen, see if I can hear your heart

0:03:05 > 0:03:07amongst all that panting.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09I know.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12He's got a double whammy, really, because he's got these bad knees.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15- And a bad hip.- And he's got bad hips as well, hasn't he?

0:03:15 > 0:03:17Because you're not able to exercise him,

0:03:17 > 0:03:19- he is getting too big, isn't he? - Yep, big boy.

0:03:19 > 0:03:23If he can lose weight, life will get easier on his joints.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26If he doesn't do well on these legs, then we are going to be looking at

0:03:26 > 0:03:28something like hip replacements, aren't we,

0:03:28 > 0:03:30- which is a really big surgery.- Yeah.

0:03:31 > 0:03:35Hip replacement surgery is a major operation.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37And Winston's got his dodgy knees as well,

0:03:37 > 0:03:41which means he can't exercise, so he has got to go on a diet.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45Have you come in to see our nurses about his weight?

0:03:45 > 0:03:47- No.- That may well be something that's really,

0:03:47 > 0:03:50really worth your while, is to come see them, they'll weigh him,

0:03:50 > 0:03:53they'll measure him, they'll give you calorie requirements.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56Owner Michael has already been holding back on those treats,

0:03:56 > 0:04:01because last time Winston was weighed, he was a whopping 33 kilos.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05He's down to 31, so he's making steady progress.

0:04:05 > 0:04:09Keep going, because he is losing weight and that is going to be the

0:04:09 > 0:04:13key to his treatment, really, above and beyond everything else.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16Oh, Winston, don't slobber on your new pal.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19Anyway, he'll be back in a few weeks to see whether his new diet

0:04:19 > 0:04:20does the trick.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30Come on, big man!

0:04:31 > 0:04:33Next, we're with James the vet, in Bristol.

0:04:35 > 0:04:39The team here work round-the-clock to help the city's pets.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41But when energy levels are low...

0:04:41 > 0:04:42Thank you very much.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44..they have a secret weapon.

0:04:44 > 0:04:45Cake!

0:04:45 > 0:04:48- ALL:- # Happy birthday to you! #

0:04:48 > 0:04:52The ability to bake a good one is an essential skill in this practice.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54Yay!

0:04:54 > 0:04:57And the best thing about having 38 members of staff

0:04:57 > 0:04:58is that we get 38 birthdays!

0:05:02 > 0:05:05And someone else with a birthday looming is Ollie the rabbit.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08So, the last thing on his wish list is a trip to the vets.

0:05:09 > 0:05:14He'd much rather be celebrating his seventh birthday doing his favourite things.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18Chilling in front of the telly box and munching on, yup,

0:05:18 > 0:05:21you guessed it, bananas.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25He's bananas for bananas all right, but poor Ollie isn't seeing them

0:05:25 > 0:05:27in their full golden glory.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30Cos there's something wrong with one of his eyes.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33He needs to see James at the vet's.

0:05:33 > 0:05:35Get it?

0:05:35 > 0:05:39Owner Tanya has spotted a faint mark on the surface of Ollie's eyeball.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42- It's quite hard to see just with the naked eye, isn't it?- It is. Yeah.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45- You've done well to spot that.- How I've noticed it sometimes is when

0:05:45 > 0:05:48- light's caught it a certain way... - OK.- ..and it's started to look

0:05:48 > 0:05:50just like he had a little flat spot.

0:05:51 > 0:05:53Ollie might have scratched his eye on a piece of hay

0:05:53 > 0:05:57and it hasn't healed, so now there's an ulcer.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00I can help, but it's not particularly pleasant.

0:06:00 > 0:06:03What we're going to do is put some local anaesthetic into the eye,

0:06:03 > 0:06:06and then with a very sharp, fine needle, I'm just going to scratch

0:06:06 > 0:06:09the surface of his eye. And what we're really doing with that

0:06:09 > 0:06:13is to try and stimulate the surface of the eye to start healing again.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16If he is a little bit nervous with that, we might actually be safer

0:06:16 > 0:06:19to give him a very light sedation so that he doesn't move at the wrong minute.

0:06:19 > 0:06:20He has had a sedation before.

0:06:20 > 0:06:23- Has he?- And he didn't come out of that very well at all.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25- Did he not?- He was wobbly for hours and hours and hours.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27It's 36 hours before I could get him to eat.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31- Oh, really?- Yes, so obviously it's very difficult.

0:06:32 > 0:06:34This is a tough call.

0:06:34 > 0:06:38Sedating Ollie might put his life at risk, but if he's awake

0:06:38 > 0:06:41and he gets stressed, he might jump.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44Not ideal if I have a needle near his eye.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46I'm going to borrow him off of you, then, OK?

0:06:46 > 0:06:49All right? Don't worry, we'll take really good care of him.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56Poor Tanya. Gosh, I hope Ollie is brave today.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01The first thing James needs to do is put some dye in Ollie's eye

0:07:01 > 0:07:04so he can get a better look at his ulcer.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06We've got some bright green fluorescence

0:07:06 > 0:07:09that indicate that the surface of the eye has been damaged,

0:07:09 > 0:07:11which is why it's glowing so bright green.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16Now he can see where the problem is, time for some anaesthetic drops.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19We're going to make sure this guy is totally numb.

0:07:19 > 0:07:20Ollie shouldn't feel it,

0:07:20 > 0:07:23but he will see me coming towards his eye with a needle.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25If he jumps, that would be a disaster.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30I hope you've got a steady hand, James.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33If you could have the eye just facing me, that would be great.

0:07:33 > 0:07:35Stay with us to find out.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44Hey, are you there? I'm talking to you.

0:07:45 > 0:07:49Back to Sheffield now, with vet Cat and weighty Winston the bulldog.

0:07:49 > 0:07:51That's a good boy.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53The excess baggage this big boy is carrying is

0:07:53 > 0:07:57affecting his hips and making even walking a struggle.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02Winston's dodgy joints are only going to get worse if he carries on

0:08:02 > 0:08:03piling on the kilos,

0:08:03 > 0:08:06so we've got to get on top of this problem and quick.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09Michael's been trying to keep Winston's munching in check

0:08:09 > 0:08:11for the past week.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14So hopefully those scales will be tipping in the right direction.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17- Right, Winston, it's your turn. - Come on, sweetheart!

0:08:17 > 0:08:19Can we go on the scales?

0:08:19 > 0:08:21Nurse Ashley's here to weigh Winston.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23Has he continued to fight the flab?

0:08:23 > 0:08:24Come on, then.

0:08:27 > 0:08:3030...1. No, 32.2.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32- OK, come on, then.- Good boy.

0:08:32 > 0:08:33The scales aren't lying.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36Winston's weight has bounced back up by a kilo,

0:08:36 > 0:08:37in just a week.

0:08:39 > 0:08:41So, he should be around 27 kilos.

0:08:41 > 0:08:45He currently is 32.5, so he's, you know,

0:08:45 > 0:08:485.5 kilos overweight.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50- That's what's sitting on his back end.- Back legs.

0:08:50 > 0:08:54Which is where we don't want, and we want to try and avoid it.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57This is not good.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59Winston's weight is heading in the wrong direction.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02It should be going down and it's actually going up.

0:09:03 > 0:09:04Time for a wake-up call.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07I want you to pick this up.

0:09:07 > 0:09:11- This is how much he weighs - overweight.- Heavy, yeah.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13For every kilo that he's overweight,

0:09:13 > 0:09:16it's the equivalent to a stone for a human.

0:09:16 > 0:09:20So, you know, he's looking at being 5st overweight.

0:09:20 > 0:09:22So, we want to try and reduce that.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25I didn't think he was that much overweight, but you do spoil

0:09:25 > 0:09:27your dogs, don't you?

0:09:27 > 0:09:30But nurse Ashley has some special food...

0:09:30 > 0:09:31Good boy.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34..that should help to get this greedy bulldog back on track.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36So, this food is a weight loss food.

0:09:36 > 0:09:40It's also got all your joint supplements in it as well,

0:09:40 > 0:09:43which helps to reduce inflammation that's in his bones,

0:09:43 > 0:09:47which therefore helps him to be walking better.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53- Your task is to lose some weight! - Yes!- Yes!

0:09:53 > 0:09:56It's been a tough weigh-in for this hunky hound.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58- See you later.- Bye!

0:09:58 > 0:10:01But Michael's confident that he can help Winston win his battle of the bulge.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04Yeah, you've got to start looking after him now, losing his weight,

0:10:04 > 0:10:08more exercise, less food, healthier food.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10He'll be running about soon again.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17Stick around to see how Winston's waistline measures up.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19Oh, no, don't eat the tape measure,

0:10:19 > 0:10:21I know you're hungry but that's excessive!

0:10:23 > 0:10:26And it's the moment of truth for James and Ollie the rabbit.

0:10:26 > 0:10:30This is the delicate bit now, so let's go really careful.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34Yeah!

0:10:34 > 0:10:36Time to see Rory in London.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41Rory's grown up surrounded by pets,

0:10:41 > 0:10:44so loves it when families bring theirs in to see him.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46Look at his back, you see it's really flaky?

0:10:46 > 0:10:49- Wow!- How do you guys think you're going to get on putting drops

0:10:49 > 0:10:52- in those eyes at home?- Uh... - Good answer.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55They say never work with children and animals,

0:10:55 > 0:10:57but that sounds right up my street!

0:10:57 > 0:10:58Nice.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01I'm a big kid at heart, and I obviously love animals.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04Oh, you're just adorable.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07So, today he's swapping the routine of the surgery...

0:11:08 > 0:11:10..for a chance to go back to school.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13- Hi, guys, how are you doing? - ALL:- Hi, Rory!

0:11:13 > 0:11:17The pupils here already look after the school's resident rabbits:

0:11:17 > 0:11:19Nutmeg, Caramel and Toffee.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23But the latest additions to the register

0:11:23 > 0:11:27are these four adorable chicks that hatched just three weeks ago.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29Oh, how cute!

0:11:30 > 0:11:33When chicks are this new, they're really vulnerable,

0:11:33 > 0:11:35so it's really important to check them over today

0:11:35 > 0:11:38and make sure the pupils are looking after them just right.

0:11:38 > 0:11:39Who wants to come and grab one?

0:11:40 > 0:11:43The chicks are currently living in this nursery box,

0:11:43 > 0:11:47until they grow big enough to be put outside in a coop.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50First things first, they need a weight check.

0:11:50 > 0:11:52So, they are 440g.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54who can work out how much one weighs?

0:11:54 > 0:11:56- Um...- 110.- Exactly.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58That's really, really good.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01Well, that's an A* in Maths and top marks for the chicks.

0:12:01 > 0:12:05So, let's start with this little sleepy one, shall we?

0:12:05 > 0:12:08But how well will they cope with a hands-on vet check?

0:12:08 > 0:12:10- Hello.- Ooh!- Look at her.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14The way to look at their wings is just, really gently,

0:12:14 > 0:12:17put your fingers underneath, like that, and pull them out very,

0:12:17 > 0:12:19very gently. And you can see all those feathers

0:12:19 > 0:12:21are looking really, really nice.

0:12:23 > 0:12:24When you're looking after chicks,

0:12:24 > 0:12:28you have to be incredibly gentle, as these babies are so fragile.

0:12:30 > 0:12:31Next thing to check is their eyes.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34They're nice and clear, and also they're not watering,

0:12:34 > 0:12:38they're not crying, because if they're crying, something could be wrong, yeah?

0:12:39 > 0:12:42Not all kids are lucky enough to have animals at home, so having them

0:12:42 > 0:12:45at school's a really nice way of getting hands-on experience

0:12:45 > 0:12:47and learning how to look after them.

0:12:49 > 0:12:52Rory wants to check the heart condition next.

0:12:52 > 0:12:54But his first patient is losing her patience.

0:12:54 > 0:12:56Tell you what, she's getting a little bit stressed out,

0:12:56 > 0:12:59so why don't we trade her for one of her friends?

0:12:59 > 0:13:01Oh, sweetie. OK you volunteered yourself, that's fine.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04Let's have a little listen. So, their hearts are going really,

0:13:04 > 0:13:07really quickly. How fast do you reckon a chick's heartbeat goes?

0:13:07 > 0:13:09How many beats do you reckon it does per minute?

0:13:09 > 0:13:1250? 20?

0:13:12 > 0:13:14- 51?- 51.

0:13:14 > 0:13:15- 60.- 60.

0:13:15 > 0:13:16- 150.- 200.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18High five. 200.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21That's nearly twice as fast as these guys' tickers.

0:13:23 > 0:13:25So far, Rory's checked the chicks' heads...

0:13:25 > 0:13:28# Shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes! #

0:13:28 > 0:13:30Toes next.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32When you put your finger underneath them,

0:13:32 > 0:13:34they should grab onto your finger, they should be able to.

0:13:34 > 0:13:36Oh, hello sweetie, she's just going to fall off.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39They should be able to just grab on and balance.

0:13:39 > 0:13:40Just like that.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45So, the chicks have all passed with flying colours.

0:13:45 > 0:13:49Now it's up to these guys to help them grow into big feathery hens.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52I will make sure they're clean and healthy,

0:13:52 > 0:13:54and I'll keep looking after them.

0:13:54 > 0:13:57I'm gonna look after all the pets in the school,

0:13:57 > 0:14:01and teach them how to be strong.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04And you never know, I might have inspired some vets of the future.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13Excuse me, can you come down, please?

0:14:13 > 0:14:14LAUGHTER

0:14:14 > 0:14:16Let's head back to James in Bristol.

0:14:18 > 0:14:21It's this banana-loving bunny's birthday.

0:14:21 > 0:14:23but that hasn't got him out of coming to the vets.

0:14:24 > 0:14:28James is attempting to deal with a nasty ulcer

0:14:28 > 0:14:30in Oliie the rabbit's eye.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33I've got to scratch the surface of his eye with a sharp needle

0:14:33 > 0:14:35to encourage new tissue to grow.

0:14:35 > 0:14:38If you could have the eye just facing me, that would be great.

0:14:38 > 0:14:40But this is going to be really difficult.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42Ollie has to be awake whilst I do it,

0:14:42 > 0:14:44and he has to stay totally still.

0:14:46 > 0:14:48OK.

0:14:48 > 0:14:52James has numbed Ollie's eye, so he shouldn't feel a thing.

0:14:52 > 0:14:56But if he does flinch, genius James has a cunning plan.

0:14:56 > 0:14:59What we're going to do is just put this needle through the tip of the

0:14:59 > 0:15:04cotton bud very gently, so that just the very tip of the needle pokes

0:15:04 > 0:15:08through, so that then when I scratch onto the surface of the eye,

0:15:08 > 0:15:10if Ollie does suddenly move,

0:15:10 > 0:15:13hopefully, it means that the needle won't go any further

0:15:13 > 0:15:16than the end of this cotton bud.

0:15:16 > 0:15:20Now, obviously, this is only a job that trained vets can do.

0:15:20 > 0:15:25This is the delicate bit now, so let's just go really careful.

0:15:25 > 0:15:29Because one slip now and my needle's gonna go straight into his eye.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34If you're squeamish, look away now!

0:15:41 > 0:15:43Aw, he's being so brave.

0:15:43 > 0:15:47- He's thinking this is a rubbish birthday present.- Yeah.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49It seems gruesome but, left alone,

0:15:49 > 0:15:52this could get worse, and Ollie could risk losing his eye.

0:15:54 > 0:15:57But this brave bunny has a vet with nerves of steel.

0:15:57 > 0:15:58He's done it.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02Look at that. What a good boy!

0:16:02 > 0:16:04My heart's really going.

0:16:04 > 0:16:05- Pressure.- I know!

0:16:05 > 0:16:07Phew! Thank goodness.

0:16:09 > 0:16:12So it's three cheers all around for birthday bunny Ollie, and owner

0:16:12 > 0:16:14Tanya will be chuffed to bits, too.

0:16:16 > 0:16:18- OK.- Thank you very much.- Nice to see you, no worries, take care.

0:16:18 > 0:16:21- Good luck, Ollie.- Thank you. - Bye!

0:16:21 > 0:16:24I really didn't want him to have sedation. It's...

0:16:24 > 0:16:27like I said, they don't react very well to it at all,

0:16:27 > 0:16:30but he seems to be perfectly happy, doesn't he?

0:16:32 > 0:16:34So, time to head home for a slice of birthday cake -

0:16:34 > 0:16:36banana birthday cake, of course.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48Back to Sheffield now to see vet Cat

0:16:48 > 0:16:51and Winston the beefy British bulldog.

0:16:52 > 0:16:56Five weeks on, he's back with owners Michael and Lesley

0:16:56 > 0:16:58for his big weigh-in.

0:16:58 > 0:17:01- Look at that.- Hi, Winston!

0:17:01 > 0:17:05Hello, big man! So, thank you ever so much for bringing him in

0:17:05 > 0:17:06for his weight check today.

0:17:06 > 0:17:10Let's get him on the scales and see what they say.

0:17:10 > 0:17:11Winston knows the drill,

0:17:11 > 0:17:14and hopefully this time it's going to be V for victory

0:17:14 > 0:17:16for this very British bulldog.

0:17:16 > 0:17:20- Lovely. So, I think we're going just about 31 kilos, aren't we?- Yeah.

0:17:20 > 0:17:22- That's brilliant.- He's a good boy.

0:17:24 > 0:17:28Yay! This is great news. Winston has lost a whole kilo,

0:17:28 > 0:17:31so hopefully his weight will continue to head in the right

0:17:31 > 0:17:33direction - down instead of up.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35Have you noticed a difference in him?

0:17:35 > 0:17:38Yeah, he's running more, up and down stairs every two minutes,

0:17:38 > 0:17:42- chasing kids.- It just shows you, doesn't it, that something as simple

0:17:42 > 0:17:44as losing weight has such an impact on absolutely everything.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48Where he's losing the weight is important, too.

0:17:48 > 0:17:50Time to take your measurements, Winston.

0:17:50 > 0:17:52Oh, no, don't eat the tape measure!

0:17:52 > 0:17:55I know you're hungry but that's excessive!

0:17:55 > 0:17:58Also, his chest has gone down a couple of centimetres.

0:17:58 > 0:17:59- That's excellent.- Good boy.

0:17:59 > 0:18:01Right, now, the big one, the tummy.

0:18:03 > 0:18:06That's amazing, four whole centimetres.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08- Has he lost?- Less on his abdomen.

0:18:08 > 0:18:10- Good boy.- Wonderful.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13Not only are we giving Winston a better quality of life,

0:18:13 > 0:18:16we're giving him the chance of a longer life as well.

0:18:16 > 0:18:19Yeah! You are a treasure, aren't you?

0:18:19 > 0:18:22Thank you very much. Lovely to see you.

0:18:22 > 0:18:24Thanks ever so much for bringing him in. Thank you!

0:18:27 > 0:18:29Slimming down has turned a weary Winston...

0:18:29 > 0:18:31Good boy!

0:18:31 > 0:18:34..into the boisterous chap that he should be.

0:18:34 > 0:18:35Oh, much different dog.

0:18:35 > 0:18:37He's enjoying it, he's running, he's chasing people.

0:18:37 > 0:18:41He never did it before, because his legs would pack up.

0:18:41 > 0:18:43But, yeah, now he's enjoying it, running about.

0:18:43 > 0:18:45So, love him to bits.

0:18:50 > 0:18:51Ah, good old Winston.

0:18:51 > 0:18:56He's strutting his stuff now and well on his way to fighting fit.

0:18:56 > 0:18:57Hey!

0:18:57 > 0:19:00And if you're wondering how Ollie the rabbit is doing...

0:19:01 > 0:19:04..he's hoppily back at home with his owner, Tanya,

0:19:04 > 0:19:07and his eye is fully healed.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10He's so happy now, he just seems to be bouncing around all the time,

0:19:10 > 0:19:14he's into everything, he's just sort of seemed so much more relaxed.

0:19:16 > 0:19:19And he finally got those banana-y birthday treats.

0:19:22 > 0:19:24Next time on The Pets Factor...

0:19:24 > 0:19:28..James throws was a party for gentle giant puppy Derek...

0:19:28 > 0:19:31I can't quite get my head around the fact that he's already so big!

0:19:33 > 0:19:35..and Cheryl treats a tiny hamster...

0:19:35 > 0:19:37He's so cute, he doesn't bite.

0:19:37 > 0:19:38..who needs a big operation.

0:19:38 > 0:19:40It's really, really, really hard to stitch the skin,

0:19:40 > 0:19:42because it's so paper-thin.
