0:00:02 > 0:00:05I'm Stacey Dooley, and I love animals,
0:00:05 > 0:00:09which means I cannot resist when it comes to little pups like this.
0:00:09 > 0:00:13But sometimes, just like us, our four-legged friends get sick.
0:00:13 > 0:00:17Fortunately, when they do, they can come to places like this,
0:00:17 > 0:00:21where amazing vets work their animal magic to make them better.
0:00:21 > 0:00:24Meet passionate pet-lover Cheryl.
0:00:24 > 0:00:27And that is how she broke it in the first place.
0:00:27 > 0:00:31The biggest softie of them all, gentle James.
0:00:31 > 0:00:32Hello, Stu!
0:00:32 > 0:00:35Come on, come for a little swim!
0:00:35 > 0:00:38The vet who talks to the animals, Cat.
0:00:38 > 0:00:40You are a snorty pig!
0:00:40 > 0:00:42Oh, no, don't eat the tape measure!
0:00:42 > 0:00:45And the one with all the best moves, Rory.
0:00:45 > 0:00:46HE SINGS
0:00:46 > 0:00:49Oh, look at that. Oh, wow! That was a snog.
0:00:52 > 0:00:55They're the vets with The Pets Factor.
0:01:01 > 0:01:04Coming up on today's show...
0:01:04 > 0:01:08Vet Cat assists with some serious dental work on adorable Daisy.
0:01:08 > 0:01:11So, it's just you and me, Daisy, all right?
0:01:11 > 0:01:12OK!
0:01:12 > 0:01:15James gets up to speed with a canine champion.
0:01:15 > 0:01:18Good girl. Weave, weave, weave, weave, weave, weave, weave!
0:01:18 > 0:01:19Good girl!
0:01:19 > 0:01:23And Cheryl operates on an abandoned kitten in need of a home.
0:01:23 > 0:01:26Hello, Trinity! Isn't she cute?
0:01:26 > 0:01:27Aww! Trinity!
0:01:29 > 0:01:32First, let's head to Sheffield to see Cat the vet.
0:01:34 > 0:01:36If there's one thing the pets here know,
0:01:36 > 0:01:39it's that coming to the vets can be a lot of fun.
0:01:39 > 0:01:40Well done, Bonnie.
0:01:42 > 0:01:45Our puppy parties are the highlight of our week.
0:01:45 > 0:01:47There you go.
0:01:47 > 0:01:49But they're also a great way
0:01:49 > 0:01:53to show our patients that coming to the vets isn't so scary after all.
0:01:54 > 0:01:57And one dog who's certainly not afraid of coming to the vets
0:01:57 > 0:02:00is Daisy the Cavalier King Charles spaniel.
0:02:00 > 0:02:02Hello! Hello!
0:02:02 > 0:02:04She's been coming here for ten years,
0:02:04 > 0:02:08and today she's back with best pal Freddie and owner Lynne.
0:02:08 > 0:02:09When the practice first opened,
0:02:09 > 0:02:12Daisy came to their first puppy party.
0:02:12 > 0:02:16But I think she's remembered it cos she's always enjoyed coming.
0:02:16 > 0:02:19This pair of spaniels just love hanging out together.
0:02:20 > 0:02:23And fun-loving Daisy is a real sweetie.
0:02:24 > 0:02:26But the minute she opens her mouth,
0:02:26 > 0:02:29Daisy's not as sweet smelling as her name suggests.
0:02:30 > 0:02:35This hound has a serious case of bad breath-eitis.
0:02:35 > 0:02:36Hi there, Daisy.
0:02:36 > 0:02:40Vet James is her dentist today, and it looks like a big job.
0:02:40 > 0:02:43So Daisy's having some teeth extracted.
0:02:43 > 0:02:46You don't know how many, do you, until...?
0:02:46 > 0:02:50I don't know how many, but we can quite safely say that these ones
0:02:50 > 0:02:53- up here are going to be extracted cos they're quite loose.- Right.
0:02:53 > 0:02:55So it's going to be four at least,
0:02:55 > 0:02:58- and there might be others that we don't anticipate.- OK.
0:02:59 > 0:03:03Like many small dogs, spaniels like Daisy are prone to dental problems.
0:03:04 > 0:03:06I'm just going to have a little listen to her heart
0:03:06 > 0:03:08and just check the rate and the rhythm.
0:03:08 > 0:03:12But to add to her woes, Daisy also has a serious heart defect
0:03:12 > 0:03:16which makes this routine procedure a really big deal.
0:03:16 > 0:03:21Her heart condition does increase her risk under the anaesthetic.
0:03:21 > 0:03:23There is, unfortunately, a real chance that she could
0:03:23 > 0:03:25potentially die under the anaesthetic.
0:03:25 > 0:03:29It is a low risk if we do things very carefully,
0:03:29 > 0:03:32and we'll do everything we can to make it as safe as possible for her.
0:03:32 > 0:03:34- Right.- OK?- OK.
0:03:35 > 0:03:37It's really tough for Daisy's owner Lynne,
0:03:37 > 0:03:39but she's doing the right thing.
0:03:39 > 0:03:42Daisy's in pain now, and the longer we leave it,
0:03:42 > 0:03:44the more dangerous the surgery is going to be.
0:03:47 > 0:03:50But Cat and James will take special care of her today
0:03:50 > 0:03:53and monitor her anaesthetic extra closely.
0:03:53 > 0:03:57- Well done, Daisy. - Good girl.- You brave dog!
0:03:57 > 0:03:59You little treasure.
0:03:59 > 0:04:01Look at that - not a drop was spilt.
0:04:01 > 0:04:04She is definitely one of the best behaved patients that I have.
0:04:04 > 0:04:07We've taken care of her for many, many years now.
0:04:07 > 0:04:09Look how well you're doing, my love.
0:04:10 > 0:04:13And Cat has an inventive plan to keep her patient as safe as possible
0:04:13 > 0:04:15through surgery.
0:04:15 > 0:04:17We put the little space boots on their feet
0:04:17 > 0:04:19to help to keep them warm.
0:04:19 > 0:04:22When a patient is under an anaesthetic, it's very easy for
0:04:22 > 0:04:24their body temperature to drop and they can get too cold,
0:04:24 > 0:04:27which means that sometimes the anaesthetic is more difficult
0:04:27 > 0:04:29or they spend longer coming around.
0:04:29 > 0:04:30So we like to keep them really toasty
0:04:30 > 0:04:32cos it really helps their recovery.
0:04:34 > 0:04:36With cat making sure Daisy's heart rate is stable,
0:04:36 > 0:04:40James needs to work fast so they can bring her back round
0:04:40 > 0:04:41as quickly as possible.
0:04:46 > 0:04:47HE CHUCKLES
0:04:48 > 0:04:49MEOW!
0:04:49 > 0:04:50Come on, big man!
0:04:52 > 0:04:54Next, we're in Bristol with James.
0:04:56 > 0:04:57That's good, he can wake up.
0:04:57 > 0:04:59He's the vet everyone wants on their team.
0:04:59 > 0:05:02- You look like Noddy. - LAUGHTER
0:05:02 > 0:05:05And he treats all his patients like superstars.
0:05:05 > 0:05:06Here we go, here we go.
0:05:06 > 0:05:09- Oh, hello!- LAUGHS:- Aww!
0:05:09 > 0:05:11But today, he's leaving the practice
0:05:11 > 0:05:14to go and meet some rather remarkable dogs.
0:05:14 > 0:05:16There's nothing I like more than a super pet,
0:05:16 > 0:05:19the ones that have that something extra special.
0:05:19 > 0:05:22And these guys are pretty special indeed.
0:05:26 > 0:05:28Oh, look! Who is this?
0:05:28 > 0:05:30- BARKING DROWNS OUT SPEECH - Aww!
0:05:33 > 0:05:37These amazing doggie athletes train every single day
0:05:37 > 0:05:39to compete on assault courses like this,
0:05:39 > 0:05:41which test their agility and speed.
0:05:47 > 0:05:49They are a totally amazing.
0:05:49 > 0:05:50Blink and you miss them.
0:05:50 > 0:05:53They are like Olympic gymnasts on four legs.
0:05:55 > 0:05:56Hello, hello.
0:05:56 > 0:06:00Trainer Lucy is hoping that little Flooey will be a future champion.
0:06:00 > 0:06:03So she's a little bit wriggly and a little bit excitable.
0:06:03 > 0:06:05- She's very cute.- But she's very cute. She's ten weeks old.
0:06:05 > 0:06:07- Ten weeks?- Ten weeks old.- Oh, look!
0:06:07 > 0:06:10And she's - hopefully - our new little agility champion,
0:06:10 > 0:06:12a little star in the making.
0:06:12 > 0:06:16But it's agility queen Pixie who needs help hanging onto her crown.
0:06:19 > 0:06:21Pixie is no ordinary dog.
0:06:21 > 0:06:22She's a true champion...
0:06:23 > 0:06:25..with a cupboard full of trophies.
0:06:28 > 0:06:30But, to stay at the top of the pile,
0:06:30 > 0:06:32this speed machine needs to stay injury free.
0:06:35 > 0:06:38So she's off to the vets for a watery work-out.
0:06:40 > 0:06:41Or, to be more exact,
0:06:41 > 0:06:45an underwater treadmill session with hydrotherapist George.
0:06:45 > 0:06:48How's she been getting on lately at home?
0:06:48 > 0:06:49Pixie has been absolutely fantastic.
0:06:49 > 0:06:52We've got a few events coming up so just working on her fitness, really,
0:06:52 > 0:06:55so just getting her ready for her competitions.
0:06:55 > 0:06:57Pixie has got a hectic schedule coming up.
0:06:57 > 0:06:59It's a huge moment in her career.
0:06:59 > 0:07:02- Good girly. Up you go. Yeah, well done, missus!- Good girl.
0:07:02 > 0:07:05She has got to be the fittest she's ever been.
0:07:08 > 0:07:11That's a smiley face. Good girl.
0:07:13 > 0:07:15They have to be little mini athletes, basically,
0:07:15 > 0:07:19so it's really, really important I keep her fit.
0:07:19 > 0:07:21And going over sort of lots of the jumps and all the twists
0:07:21 > 0:07:24and turns, if she hasn't got a really good strong core, it just
0:07:24 > 0:07:27makes it harder for her and it just puts her at risk of injuries.
0:07:29 > 0:07:32From a vet's point of view, this is the best and, probably,
0:07:32 > 0:07:34the safest workout that Pixie can do.
0:07:34 > 0:07:37Plenty of exercise, she's not going to hurt herself,
0:07:37 > 0:07:39and she's absolutely loving it.
0:07:41 > 0:07:44She looks really, really good, really healthy.
0:07:44 > 0:07:45Pixie is obviously a true champion.
0:07:45 > 0:07:47She is not fazed by this work-out,
0:07:47 > 0:07:49and she's taking it all in her stride.
0:07:52 > 0:07:54Her heart rate was 80 before we started
0:07:54 > 0:07:57and she's just done some exercise in there,
0:07:57 > 0:07:59about three minutes walking, and it will still the same,
0:07:59 > 0:08:01so she's really, really fit.
0:08:01 > 0:08:02So she's done very good.
0:08:03 > 0:08:05Session over.
0:08:05 > 0:08:06Oh, well done!
0:08:06 > 0:08:10Pixie's ready to shake off the opposition and take on the world.
0:08:12 > 0:08:17Later, James' nerves are jangling when he takes charge of the champ.
0:08:17 > 0:08:19My heart's really going for it. I really feel...
0:08:19 > 0:08:22I'm feeling the pressure that I've got to achieve.
0:08:22 > 0:08:24And the pressure's on for vet Cat and James
0:08:24 > 0:08:27to get Daisy through some serious dental work.
0:08:27 > 0:08:30It's really important that we get the balance right between
0:08:30 > 0:08:33her being asleep and comfortable under the anaesthetic,
0:08:33 > 0:08:35but also her heart coping OK.
0:08:38 > 0:08:40Oh, yeah!
0:08:40 > 0:08:43Next, we're off to Essex to see who Cheryl's helping today.
0:08:44 > 0:08:46Oh, you're safe now!
0:08:48 > 0:08:50Nearly half of all the patients she sees are cats.
0:08:50 > 0:08:52You are beautiful.
0:08:52 > 0:08:55I love them all. I just love cats so much.
0:08:57 > 0:08:58Well, today is Cheryl's lucky day,
0:08:58 > 0:09:01as she has a brand-new feline patient to see.
0:09:01 > 0:09:04Hello, Trinity! Isn't she cute?
0:09:04 > 0:09:06Aww! Trinity!
0:09:06 > 0:09:09- Can you believe she was just dumped? - No.
0:09:10 > 0:09:13It was the run-up to Christmas and all through the house,
0:09:13 > 0:09:16no creatures were stirring, not even a...
0:09:16 > 0:09:19- Meow!- A kitten?!- Meow!
0:09:19 > 0:09:22AS MOUSE: "Eh, hello, what about me?!"
0:09:23 > 0:09:28Unbelievably, this cute kitty was just left on someone's doorstep.
0:09:28 > 0:09:31Luckily, she was rescued by the RSPCA,
0:09:31 > 0:09:33and now it's time for her to see vet Cheryl
0:09:33 > 0:09:36to get ready for her forever home.
0:09:38 > 0:09:40Aww, she's so cute.
0:09:40 > 0:09:43Do you think somebody bought her and then didn't want her?
0:09:43 > 0:09:45Or did...? Was she a stray?
0:09:45 > 0:09:47Good girl, Trinity. Oh, don't worry!
0:09:47 > 0:09:49Scary, scary clippers!
0:09:49 > 0:09:51She's lively.
0:09:52 > 0:09:55Today, this wriggly little kitten is getting neutered,
0:09:55 > 0:09:58which means Cheryl will remove her reproductive organs
0:09:58 > 0:10:00the uterus and ovaries.
0:10:00 > 0:10:02Trinity is such an adorable little kitten...
0:10:02 > 0:10:04- Good girl!- Good girl!
0:10:04 > 0:10:06..and really full of life.
0:10:06 > 0:10:07So brave.
0:10:09 > 0:10:12But it's really important that we do an op to stop her having babies.
0:10:12 > 0:10:15So one cat, if it hasn't been neutered,
0:10:15 > 0:10:18can produce up to 52 kittens in one year,
0:10:18 > 0:10:22because if one cat has kittens, then those kittens can have kittens,
0:10:22 > 0:10:24and then those kittens can have kittens.
0:10:24 > 0:10:29And we see so many unwanted stray kittens, just like Trinity.
0:10:30 > 0:10:34Now Trinity is fast asleep and her belly has been shaved
0:10:34 > 0:10:35and vacuumed...
0:10:36 > 0:10:38..she's ready for theatre.
0:10:38 > 0:10:41Aww, I really want to get Trinity's operation over and done with
0:10:41 > 0:10:45as quickly as possible so that I can see her bouncing around again.
0:10:45 > 0:10:47You and me both, Cheryl.
0:10:47 > 0:10:48The faster Trinity gets sorted,
0:10:48 > 0:10:51the quicker she'll find a new loving home.
0:10:53 > 0:10:55Meow!
0:10:58 > 0:11:00Hey, I'm talking to you.
0:11:00 > 0:11:03Time to catch up with vet Cat and Daisy in Sheffield.
0:11:05 > 0:11:07This lovable Cavalier King Charles spaniel
0:11:07 > 0:11:09is having some rotten teeth removed.
0:11:09 > 0:11:11- Very good girl!- That's great!
0:11:11 > 0:11:13But because of her heart condition,
0:11:13 > 0:11:16vet Cat is on hand to keep her under close observation.
0:11:16 > 0:11:18So it's just you and me, Daisy, all right?
0:11:18 > 0:11:21But this is not going to be a pretty sight.
0:11:21 > 0:11:24Squawk! If you're squeamish, look away now.
0:11:29 > 0:11:33They are quite loose, so there's not really a lot of work to be done.
0:11:33 > 0:11:36These teeth are trying to work their way out anyway.
0:11:37 > 0:11:40It makes our job easier to extract the teeth,
0:11:40 > 0:11:43but it does mean that there's been a problem for a while.
0:11:43 > 0:11:46No wonder Daisy's breath has been smelly - her teeth
0:11:46 > 0:11:49are so bad they're practically falling out by themselves.
0:11:50 > 0:11:53With the rotten ones removed, James cleans the others to try
0:11:53 > 0:11:56and prevent any more extractions like this.
0:11:57 > 0:11:59OK, missus, over we go.
0:12:01 > 0:12:03And as he gets to work on the other side,
0:12:03 > 0:12:06Cat keeps a careful eye on Daisy's anaesthetic.
0:12:06 > 0:12:10It's really important that we get the balance right between
0:12:10 > 0:12:13her being asleep and comfortable under the anaesthetic,
0:12:13 > 0:12:15but also her heart coping OK.
0:12:15 > 0:12:18So, that's why she's being really closely monitored
0:12:18 > 0:12:20to make sure we get that right.
0:12:21 > 0:12:24We don't want her anaesthetic to be a long one,
0:12:24 > 0:12:26so the quicker we are, the better, really.
0:12:27 > 0:12:28Luckily for Daisy,
0:12:28 > 0:12:32it's only taken 15 minutes to remove her four bottom teeth.
0:12:32 > 0:12:35Right, then, Daisy, we'll give it a quick blast
0:12:35 > 0:12:37and clean off all the polish.
0:12:37 > 0:12:39Well done, James. Super speedy!
0:12:41 > 0:12:43I am so pleased Daisy pulled through.
0:12:47 > 0:12:50Top teamwork, guys. Time to go home, Daisy.
0:12:50 > 0:12:52And someone's been lost without you.
0:12:52 > 0:12:57- Freddie's been really subdued.- Yeah. - Not been bouncy at all.
0:12:57 > 0:12:59We're not used to him being quiet.
0:13:02 > 0:13:04Here she is!
0:13:08 > 0:13:11Daisy's back! Look!
0:13:16 > 0:13:18Oh, I love a good doggie reunion.
0:13:18 > 0:13:22Did you miss her today?
0:13:22 > 0:13:23There you go, Dais - you can go home now.
0:13:33 > 0:13:35Excuse me, can you come down, please?
0:13:35 > 0:13:38Let's get back to Bristol with James and Pixie.
0:13:40 > 0:13:44Her regular hydrotherapy treatments have helped keep her injury free
0:13:44 > 0:13:46and looking competition ready.
0:13:46 > 0:13:48- How are we doing? - Really good, thank you.
0:13:48 > 0:13:51- Oh, I just could not resist coming out to see you.- Thank you.
0:13:51 > 0:13:53Now, should we have a little look, see her in action?
0:13:53 > 0:13:56- Yes, come on.- OK. Let's go. - Let's go. Let's go.
0:13:56 > 0:13:58Are you ready?
0:13:58 > 0:14:01OK, go, go! Tunnel, tunnel!
0:14:06 > 0:14:08Good girl!
0:14:08 > 0:14:10Weave, weave, weave, go, go, go! Go on! Yeah, beautiful!
0:14:10 > 0:14:12Good girlie.
0:14:14 > 0:14:15Good girlie.
0:14:15 > 0:14:18She's such a talent. Good girl, Pixie.
0:14:18 > 0:14:21- She really enjoys it.- Do you think she would let me have a go?
0:14:21 > 0:14:23- Erm, I think you could... - Would you let me have a go?

0:14:36 > 0:14:40- So I turn my shoulders...- Yeah. - to make her know which way to go?
0:14:40 > 0:14:43Yeah, absolutely. So she'll move with me when I start moving around.
0:14:43 > 0:14:45- So, can you see how she follows? - Yeah.
0:14:45 > 0:14:47So she likes to follow the direction that I'm going in.
0:14:47 > 0:14:50- She's kind of a pre-trained dog, if you like...- OK.
0:14:50 > 0:14:52..so she will help you out, definitely.
0:14:52 > 0:14:54I think I know who's going to be in charge here,
0:14:54 > 0:14:56and they've got four legs, not two!
0:14:56 > 0:14:59My heart's really going for it. I really feel...
0:14:59 > 0:15:01I'm feeling the pressure that I've got to achieve.

0:15:21 > 0:15:23Who's a clever girl?!
0:15:23 > 0:15:25You do have to be quite fit for it, don't you?
0:15:25 > 0:15:27- You have to be a little bit fit for it.- Yeah.
0:15:27 > 0:15:28I mean, if I can do it, it just goes to show
0:15:28 > 0:15:31- anybody, really, can do agility with a dog.- Absolutely.
0:15:31 > 0:15:33- What a great hobby.- Yeah, get your dog out there and have the go.

0:15:50 > 0:15:55Little kitten Trinity was abandoned on a doorstep just before Christmas.
0:15:55 > 0:15:57She's dreaming of finding a permanent loving home.
0:15:59 > 0:16:01But first, she needs an operation called neutering
0:16:01 > 0:16:04to stop her having unwanted kittens.
0:16:04 > 0:16:07Trinity is a really feisty little kitten, and this whole experience
0:16:07 > 0:16:10at the vet might be a little bit traumatic for her,
0:16:10 > 0:16:13but I think she'll forgive us pretty quickly.
0:16:15 > 0:16:16MACHINERY BEEPS
0:16:16 > 0:16:21Generally, there's no problems after they have their neutering operation.

0:16:27 > 0:16:29Cats are amazing for that, aren't they?
0:16:29 > 0:16:31In, like, two hours she'll probably be jumping...
0:16:31 > 0:16:34She'll be, like, tearing around, desperate to eat something,
0:16:34 > 0:16:35climbing up the front of her kennel.
0:16:37 > 0:16:40It doesn't take long for Cheryl to finish the operation

0:16:42 > 0:16:45- Wonderful.- Yeah. - No complications.

0:16:50 > 0:16:53She'll be up and about in a minute.
