0:00:02 > 0:00:04I'm Nigel.

0:00:04 > 0:00:05I'm Michelle.

0:00:08 > 0:00:11'We're going to show you how to turn useless rubbish...'

0:00:11 > 0:00:13What are you going to do with this lot?

0:00:13 > 0:00:15'..into amazing useful stuff.'

0:00:15 > 0:00:17So cool.

0:00:17 > 0:00:19'All here on...'

0:00:22 > 0:00:26Coming up - we meet an artist who makes amazing pictures

0:00:26 > 0:00:27out of old toys.

0:00:27 > 0:00:29We visit someone who wants an idea

0:00:29 > 0:00:32for the toys she's stopped playing with.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35And we show you how to make a disco bottle ball.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38But first, a lookalike lunch from leftovers.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43- Feeling hungry?- Grub's up.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46- Hey, mate. We're testing out a new range of food products.- Yep.

0:00:46 > 0:00:50And you're having some food there, so we wanted you to try our sandwich.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53What d'you reckon? Is he going to fall for it?

0:00:53 > 0:00:54Looks tasty.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57- It does, doesn't it? It looks tasty.- Looks tasty.

0:00:57 > 0:00:58I wonder if these two will bite.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01I've got a new salad, burger and chips. Do you want to try it?

0:01:01 > 0:01:04Yeah.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07It's fake food. It looks quite realistic, don't you think?

0:01:07 > 0:01:09You don't want to eat it, then?

0:01:10 > 0:01:13He's not quite sure, is he? Give it a go.

0:01:13 > 0:01:14Nearly fooled you.

0:01:15 > 0:01:16No.

0:01:16 > 0:01:20And you? How about this lot? They all seem keen.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22- What is it?- Yeah, try it. Try the burger.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24Should have stuck to the healthy option.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27It's fake food. That was tasty.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30I'm going to show you how to make it. Here's how to prank your mates

0:01:30 > 0:01:32out of stuff you have lying around.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35OK, fake food. Let's make it.

0:01:35 > 0:01:36First we need our bread.

0:01:36 > 0:01:41Now, what I've used is a couple of old, clean sponges.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43Cut them into a nice square shape.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45We need some filling for these sandwiches.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47Now I'm making a ham and cheese sandwich.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51Now, I've used old, clean dusters for the ham and cheese.

0:01:51 > 0:01:56Pink for the ham, and I've used yellow for the cheese.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58So, fold your fillings down

0:01:58 > 0:02:03and put them in between your fake slices of bread.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05See that there?

0:02:05 > 0:02:07Next we need to neaten up our sandwich,

0:02:07 > 0:02:11and for this we get a pair of scissors and trim down the fillings,

0:02:11 > 0:02:16making sure we don't cut our fake bread in the process.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19And if you do that all the way around your sandwich,

0:02:19 > 0:02:24what you end up with is something that looks a little bit like that.

0:02:25 > 0:02:30Next, cut our bread into two sandwich triangles.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33Now to make the salad. So for that, what I've done

0:02:33 > 0:02:36is taken an old plastic cup and cut the bottom off.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39And what you're left with

0:02:39 > 0:02:42is something that looks a little bit like that.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44But to make it more tomato-like for our filling,

0:02:44 > 0:02:46you need to paint it red.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48Paint it red both sides, let it dry,

0:02:48 > 0:02:52and you'll get some lovely-looking fake tomatoes.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55Put those in your sandwich.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57Now all we need is a bit of lettuce.

0:02:57 > 0:03:02Now for that, what I've used is some old green plastic bags.

0:03:03 > 0:03:08Tear or cut those up into lettuce-like leaves,

0:03:08 > 0:03:11and place those in your sandwich.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15See, it's looking pretty realistic now.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17Put the bread back on top,

0:03:17 > 0:03:20and there we have a good-looking sandwich.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23All we need is something to put it in.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26So how's about one of these?

0:03:26 > 0:03:29Save one of your old sandwich containers.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31It's perfect for fake food.

0:03:31 > 0:03:37Put your sandwich inside the old sandwich container,

0:03:37 > 0:03:40and you should end up with something a bit like this.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43Now, if you don't want to make a sandwich,

0:03:43 > 0:03:46what you could do is make something else.

0:03:46 > 0:03:50A fake burger and chips which is made out of old sponges,

0:03:50 > 0:03:54and then for the lettuce again I've used old green plastic bags.

0:03:54 > 0:03:56Or if you're feeling really exotic,

0:03:56 > 0:04:00then you could make yourself some fake sushi.

0:04:00 > 0:04:04Now for this, I've used black plastic bags.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08And then for the rice inside you can use this -

0:04:08 > 0:04:11some springy old fruit packaging.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14So there you have it. Fake food.

0:04:14 > 0:04:15Want to try?

0:04:48 > 0:04:50Did you know that three million tonnes of waste plastic

0:04:50 > 0:04:53is produced every year in the UK?

0:04:53 > 0:04:58And that's about the same weight as 7,500 jumbo jets full of people.

0:04:58 > 0:04:59That is a lot of waste.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02Well, I know someone who never wants to throw anything away,

0:05:02 > 0:05:05and she wants to make something fantastic out of plastic.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11Meet Eliz. She never throws anything away.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14She keeps her old books, she keeps her old clothes

0:05:14 > 0:05:19and she's even kept hold of her old toys, including the broken ones.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22So, Eliz, tell me - what's your dilemma?

0:05:22 > 0:05:24I've got so many toys from when I was little,

0:05:24 > 0:05:28but I just don't throw them away because I feel sorry for them.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31- So you're quite attached to your toys?- Definitely.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34Well, I know someone who does amazing things with toys.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37So to give you some inspiration, take a look at this.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50My name's Jane Perkins, and I work as an artist using found materials

0:05:50 > 0:05:52including plastic toys.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11I find a lot of my materials at car boot sales.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16I know just what I can do with these.

0:06:20 > 0:06:22These would be good.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26And this would be perfect

0:06:26 > 0:06:28I don't know what that is. Oh, it's a camera, I think.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31Someone's getting rid of these, but they're like treasure to me.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38This is a really exciting box.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43Right, I've got everything I need. Time to go and start some work.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49One of the most important things is to plan your design before you begin.

0:06:49 > 0:06:51I'm working on a portrait at the moment,

0:06:51 > 0:06:55and I'm going to continue using some of the things we found this morning.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58I'm looking for pinks and for clear white,

0:06:58 > 0:07:00and I'm looking for black and white.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03So that's the bull I found, which is fantastic.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09There's a big cat, and black beads are always useful.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13I'm always looking for cheap plastic beads to use for backgrounds.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16Bits of shell from a little necklace.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20There's a saddle that I found.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23This horse is lovely, but too big for the picture I'm making at the moment.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25If you use something that's too big,

0:07:25 > 0:07:27it'll dominate the picture and jump out at you,

0:07:27 > 0:07:29so you have to keep things to the right scale

0:07:29 > 0:07:32for the size of the picture you're making.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34These are going to be fantastic.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37When I start a picture, I start off with a photograph

0:07:37 > 0:07:39and I gather together all the colours

0:07:39 > 0:07:42that I think will be suitable for that picture.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45So I've gathered together a box full of pinks and whites and blacks.

0:07:49 > 0:07:51I'm using a hot glue gun to stick the pieces on.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53The glue gets extremely hot,

0:07:53 > 0:07:58and I have to be very careful not to burn my fingers when I'm using it.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00I put the larger pieces on first

0:08:00 > 0:08:03to make them equal around the picture,

0:08:03 > 0:08:06and then I fill in the small gaps afterwards at the end.

0:08:10 > 0:08:12I put a lot of things on upside down or at strange angles,

0:08:12 > 0:08:14so that when you look at the picture

0:08:14 > 0:08:17you don't immediately recognise what it is.

0:08:19 > 0:08:22I tend to put things on in random places.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24I'll just pick something up and think, where can I put that?

0:08:24 > 0:08:26And then put it wherever it fits.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28So I'm not terribly organised about it.

0:08:35 > 0:08:39As a child I was always making things, toys and puppets and sewing,

0:08:39 > 0:08:44and I never threw anything away. I couldn't bear to throw it away.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47So this kind of work is amazing, it's brilliant for me.

0:08:47 > 0:08:48I absolutely love it.

0:08:52 > 0:08:54I like using plastic toys

0:08:54 > 0:08:57because they come in such a variety of shapes and colours.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59I use everything exactly as it's found.

0:08:59 > 0:09:00I never add any colour to anything.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06So I'm just going to put on the last few pieces,

0:09:06 > 0:09:08and then I can reveal my picture.

0:09:12 > 0:09:16So here it is. My portrait of Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19I hope it inspires you to do something with your old toys.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30It's incredible how Jane made that portrait

0:09:30 > 0:09:33with all those old, unwanted toys.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36And that's inspired me to make something amazing for Eliz.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38We just need some of Eliz's toys and a family photo.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42Where were you there?

0:09:42 > 0:09:45- On holiday. I can't even remember taking that picture.- Very sweet.

0:09:45 > 0:09:49What we're going to make is a toy picture frame

0:09:49 > 0:09:51- Up for that?- Yeah.

0:09:51 > 0:09:54Now, it's simple. We're going to start by putting your picture

0:09:54 > 0:09:56in the middle of a piece of old cardboard.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58Now, this is quite thick cardboard,

0:09:58 > 0:10:01because what we want to make sure is that the cardboard

0:10:01 > 0:10:03takes the weight of all the toys that we're putting on it.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06And what I'd like you do to just with a pencil

0:10:06 > 0:10:09- is draw around your picture.- OK.

0:10:09 > 0:10:11Because this is going to create our frame, basically.

0:10:11 > 0:10:13How old were you on this picture?

0:10:13 > 0:10:16I have no idea. I look like I'm about seven, maybe.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19You look really cute. So we'll put this to one side,

0:10:19 > 0:10:22and then what I want you to do is just draw another square

0:10:22 > 0:10:25- just a few millimetres in from this one inside it, OK?- OK.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28And that just means that when we cut it out,

0:10:28 > 0:10:31your picture is just not going to fall straight through the hole,

0:10:31 > 0:10:33so it just needs to be slightly smaller.

0:10:34 > 0:10:36This is good teamwork, hey, Eliz?

0:10:36 > 0:10:38Yeah. Teamwork is very important.

0:10:38 > 0:10:42That's it, perfect. Now cut it out.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44So a good tip to create a hole in the cardboard,

0:10:44 > 0:10:46because it is quite thick.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49Grab yourself a pencil and a bit of sticky tack.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54I'm just going to push this at the back and push my pencil through.

0:10:54 > 0:10:59It just saves your fingers as well. And now we can start cutting it.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02It is quite tough, so you just have to bear with it.

0:11:02 > 0:11:06Probably worth getting someone to help you with this bit.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10Perfect. So you can just pop this bit out now,

0:11:10 > 0:11:13and then you've got your picture frame.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16Jane Perkins mentioned that it's all about planning your design,

0:11:16 > 0:11:20so we really need to think about what kind of theme we want on it.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23Now, with your plastic toys you've got loads of blues and yellows,

0:11:23 > 0:11:26so I was thinking maybe a kind of beach theme.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29- You know, sea, sand, sun. Sounds good?- Yeah.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32So how about we draw a nice big sun in this corner,

0:11:32 > 0:11:35and this section can be the sand.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43Now, obviously this is something that we've chosen to do,

0:11:43 > 0:11:46but you can literally do whatever you fancy.

0:11:46 > 0:11:49It might be you do, I don't know, a park theme or a rainforest theme.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51Just depends what kind of toys you've got

0:11:51 > 0:11:52as to what you can go for.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55Whilst that's drying, let's have a look through these toys

0:11:55 > 0:11:58and pick out some colours that we think are going to work.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00So let's pick out some yellow bits.

0:12:00 > 0:12:01There's some there.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03Yeah, let's get a dinosaur on there.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06These would be quite good for the rays of the sun,

0:12:06 > 0:12:09if we kind of stick them out. Orange is good as well,

0:12:09 > 0:12:11like the different kind of tones in the sun.

0:12:11 > 0:12:16Also these old track bits might be quite useful because it's curvy.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18Yeah. What about the ducks?

0:12:18 > 0:12:21- The only thing with something like this is it's quite big.- Yeah.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24Too big for our picture, unless you've got a giant frame.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27So maybe the duck will be good to save for something a bit bigger.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29- Starfish, yeah. - Starfish, that's cool.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36I think our picture frame is just about dry.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38We can start planning where everything will go on.

0:12:38 > 0:12:40We could use the tracks,

0:12:40 > 0:12:44- because they're quite good for the waviness, aren't they?- Yeah.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47Sun, let's do the sun.

0:12:47 > 0:12:49We can put these building blocks on again,

0:12:49 > 0:12:53because it just makes it more 3D, doesn't it?

0:12:53 > 0:12:54We should use some cars, maybe.

0:12:54 > 0:12:57Yeah, we could use the yellow car there.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00- Those are yellow and orange.- Yeah.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07- OK, I think that's our design done. Are you happy?- Yeah.

0:13:07 > 0:13:09I think we've done a good job.

0:13:09 > 0:13:13All that's left to do now is stick them down, which is another fun bit.

0:13:13 > 0:13:16So I'll grab some glue. It needs to be pretty strong, obviously,

0:13:16 > 0:13:17to keep all the toys secure.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20Keep on sticking and leave it to dry.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23Remember that old bit of cardboard that we put aside earlier.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26Exactly the same size as your picture frame.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29Put some double-sided sticky tape or glue on three sides of it

0:13:29 > 0:13:33and stick this to the back of your picture frame.

0:13:33 > 0:13:35Now you're leaving one side unstuck

0:13:35 > 0:13:38because obviously you want to be able to slide your picture in.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41So you can actually make sure your picture stands up.

0:13:41 > 0:13:43I've just got another old bit of cardboard.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45I've just folded a flap here like this

0:13:45 > 0:13:49and put some sticky tape or glue on it, whatever you fancy.

0:13:49 > 0:13:53This is going to stick onto the back just like that.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56So the last thing to do, and obviously the most important,

0:13:56 > 0:14:00is to put our picture into the frame.

0:14:00 > 0:14:02So in the side that we've not stuck down,

0:14:02 > 0:14:06you're just going to slide your picture in like so.

0:14:06 > 0:14:07Position it in the middle,

0:14:07 > 0:14:11and there you have your very own toy picture frame.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13- What d'you reckon? - Yeah, it's really cool.

0:14:13 > 0:14:15It's cool, isn't it?

0:14:17 > 0:14:18Perfect.

0:14:18 > 0:14:20And if you don't fancy making a picture frame,

0:14:20 > 0:14:23you know those slightly bigger toys that I showed you earlier?

0:14:23 > 0:14:26Well, you could use them, stick them to an old jam jar lid,

0:14:26 > 0:14:29paint it and you've got your very own cool container

0:14:29 > 0:14:33that you can store loads of bits and pieces in.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36Or how about creating your very own unique T-shirt,

0:14:36 > 0:14:40customised with all your old plastic toys? Very cool.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54To make a toy picture frame, here's what you do.

0:14:54 > 0:14:58Stage one - cut out two identical pieces of old card

0:14:58 > 0:15:01that are big enough for your frame. Make sure they're thick enough

0:15:01 > 0:15:04to support the weight of a whole load of plastic toys.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11Stage two - draw around your photo.

0:15:11 > 0:15:13Take it away and draw a slightly smaller rectangle

0:15:13 > 0:15:15within the shape left by the photo.

0:15:15 > 0:15:19Cut out the smaller rectangle and keep the card for later.

0:15:20 > 0:15:23Stage three - give your frame a lick of paint.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25You can match or complement

0:15:25 > 0:15:29the colours of the old toys you're going to use.

0:15:29 > 0:15:31Stage four - get your old toys and stick them on,

0:15:31 > 0:15:34then just leave them to dry.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38Stage five - on your other piece of card,

0:15:38 > 0:15:41glue or tape three of the sides and stick this to the back.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44Leaving one side unstuck means you can slide your photo in.

0:15:44 > 0:15:47Using the spare card from the inside of the frame,

0:15:47 > 0:15:49make a stand and attach to the back.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55Stage six - put your photo inside the frame.

0:16:03 > 0:16:08Still to come: We meet an artist who transforms food into amazing art.

0:16:08 > 0:16:10And we show you how to make a pencil pot

0:16:10 > 0:16:13out of a milk carton and some old pencils.

0:16:13 > 0:16:15But first, Totally Famous.

0:16:15 > 0:16:18Introducing Pablo Picasso.

0:16:18 > 0:16:22Totally famous for selling and losing more paintings than any other artist.

0:16:23 > 0:16:27Pablo Picasso was a Spanish artist who loved to experiment.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30He started a style called cubism

0:16:30 > 0:16:34where he painted every single angle of an object in the same picture.

0:16:34 > 0:16:38Like this one. Er...it's supposed to be a guitarist.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41Using the cubist style,

0:16:41 > 0:16:46Picasso churned out over 50,000 pieces of art in his lifetime,

0:16:46 > 0:16:50including epic paintings like Guernica about the Spanish Civil War

0:16:50 > 0:16:54and recycled sculptures like Head of a Bull.

0:16:54 > 0:16:57People snapped up his work and he made lots of money,

0:16:57 > 0:17:01meaning he could paint all day and party all night.

0:17:03 > 0:17:05The only problem was,

0:17:05 > 0:17:09because he was making so much art there was more to steal,

0:17:09 > 0:17:15and over a thousand of his pieces of art mysteriously went missing.

0:17:15 > 0:17:19Today people are still desperate to get their paws on a Picasso,

0:17:19 > 0:17:22which means he's now become the only artist in history

0:17:22 > 0:17:25to have both lost the most paintings and sold the most.

0:17:26 > 0:17:30So let's hear it for the art world's biggest winner and loser -

0:17:30 > 0:17:32the totally famous Pablo Picasso.

0:17:41 > 0:17:44Today we're going to make a milk carton pencil pot.

0:17:44 > 0:17:48Using an old plastic milk carton and a load of old pencils.

0:17:49 > 0:17:51You can put anything in them.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54Your keys, your money, even your jewellery.

0:17:54 > 0:17:56First you get an old, clean milk carton

0:17:56 > 0:17:58and you cut it in half.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07Now you're going to get some double-sided tape

0:18:07 > 0:18:10and stick it round the carton.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13You need two pieces, you stick one round the top

0:18:13 > 0:18:16and one round the bottom.

0:18:18 > 0:18:22The next thing you do is you get some old pencils.

0:18:22 > 0:18:24Me and Michelle don't use these ones any more.

0:18:24 > 0:18:28And you just stick them around the carton.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31Stick the pencils quite close together.

0:18:33 > 0:18:36What will you put in it, Michelle?

0:18:36 > 0:18:39Er, maybe jewellery. What are you going to put in yours, Nigel?

0:18:39 > 0:18:42- Baby pandas. MICHELLE:- Huh?

0:18:42 > 0:18:46And there you have it. Your own milk carton pencil pot.

0:18:46 > 0:18:49To put all your bits and bobs in.

0:18:49 > 0:18:51NIGEL: Including baby pandas.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54The best thing about making the milk carton pencil pot

0:18:54 > 0:18:56is you can store loads of things in it.

0:19:26 > 0:19:29What can you make from a big bag full of rubbish?

0:19:29 > 0:19:31Just have a look at this.

0:19:31 > 0:19:33Whoa! That's a lot of plastic bottles.

0:19:33 > 0:19:37I'm going to show you how to make something really funky for your room.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40Wicked. I can't wait to see what's going to happen.

0:19:40 > 0:19:43You'll need a load of plastic bottles, an old ball,

0:19:43 > 0:19:48newspaper, thick string or rope,

0:19:48 > 0:19:51PVA glue, double-sided tape,

0:19:52 > 0:19:55paint and strong glue.

0:19:58 > 0:20:00We're going use it to make one of those.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03- They are wicked. - Disco bottle balls.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06You can hang them up to impress your mates if you're having a party.

0:20:06 > 0:20:09I bet the light reflects really well from it as well, doesn't it?

0:20:09 > 0:20:11They look amazing when the light hits them.

0:20:11 > 0:20:13- So the first thing you need is a ball.- OK.

0:20:13 > 0:20:15An old ball, find it anywhere.

0:20:15 > 0:20:18And we need to stick old newspaper to it with PVA glue.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21- Easy. I love that.- Simple. Do you reckon you can do that?

0:20:21 > 0:20:24- Yeah, I can do that.- Go on, then.

0:20:24 > 0:20:27Cut the paper into small pieces before gluing.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30The paper will help the bottles stick to the ball.

0:20:31 > 0:20:35OK, so once we've got our ball that's been covered in newspaper,

0:20:35 > 0:20:38what we need to do is we need to paint it a nice colour.

0:20:38 > 0:20:41I've chosen some silver paint.

0:20:41 > 0:20:42Oooh, silver, nice.

0:20:42 > 0:20:44We're going down that bling route.

0:20:44 > 0:20:48- Yeah, it's kind of space-agey, isn't it?- It is.- Intergalactic.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51If you're not into intergalactic bling silver like Michelle and I,

0:20:51 > 0:20:53you can use a different colour.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00- Look at that.- Shiny, that.- Shiny.

0:21:00 > 0:21:04Now, the next thing we do is attach our key bottle to it.

0:21:04 > 0:21:06- I see.- Now this is our key bottle

0:21:06 > 0:21:08because we've tied a bit of string around it.

0:21:08 > 0:21:13- So this one needs to be stuck on with some strong glue.- Yeah.

0:21:13 > 0:21:17This is the bottle you're going to use to hang your disco ball up.

0:21:17 > 0:21:19You need to use strong glue

0:21:19 > 0:21:22as this bottle will take all the weight of the ball.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24- Normally it takes about two to three days.- OK.

0:21:24 > 0:21:27- Joke. You're going to be all right. - You what?

0:21:27 > 0:21:29See you in a bit, yeah?

0:21:29 > 0:21:31See you in a little bit.

0:21:31 > 0:21:34Only kidding. It should take about 20 minutes to dry.

0:21:34 > 0:21:37Now for your other bottles, you can also use strong glue,

0:21:37 > 0:21:40- but for us, we've got some double-sided tape.- Ah, clever.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43And we're going to use that.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46You stick your other bottles as close as you can together

0:21:46 > 0:21:50using the double-sided tape.

0:21:50 > 0:21:53- Oh.- See, it's already starting to take shape.- Yeah.

0:21:53 > 0:21:55It's such a good use for old bottles, isn't it?

0:21:55 > 0:22:00People are throwing these away when they could be creating masterpieces.

0:22:00 > 0:22:02I'm placing the bottles very close together,

0:22:02 > 0:22:05but you can vary the spacing or use different colours

0:22:05 > 0:22:07to make your ball unique.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10Once you're halfway through, it should look like this.

0:22:10 > 0:22:13- Ooh, yes.- See that? It's starting to take shape already.

0:22:13 > 0:22:15- Yep.- Once you get them all on

0:22:15 > 0:22:20then you have your finished bottle ball like those over there.

0:22:20 > 0:22:24Since plastic bottles come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colours,

0:22:24 > 0:22:27there are many ways to make your disco ball match your style.

0:22:28 > 0:22:31If you can't find, you know, a medium-sized ball,

0:22:31 > 0:22:34you could use a smaller ball, you could use a big ball.

0:22:34 > 0:22:36The neon on one down at the bottom, that's a tennis ball.

0:22:36 > 0:22:40And then the one on the far left there with the gold core,

0:22:40 > 0:22:43that's a football inside that one.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45- You have impressed me. - There you go. Your going to want one.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48I'm trying that out, I'm hanging one in my room. That's it. Done.

0:22:48 > 0:22:50Bottle balls.

0:22:50 > 0:22:52Perfect to get the party started, let's get it.

0:22:58 > 0:23:00CHOMPING

0:23:00 > 0:23:01BURPS

0:23:01 > 0:23:04- Nice moves, Vin.- Thanks, Min. Do you know that in the UK

0:23:04 > 0:23:09we throw away enough plastic bottles each year to circle the Earth twice.

0:23:09 > 0:23:12All the more reason to make a disco bottle ball,

0:23:12 > 0:23:15then we can dance AND reuse our old bottles.

0:23:15 > 0:23:18No one wants to watch you dancing, Min.

0:23:18 > 0:23:22Hey! I can dance with anyone. I danced with an old sink once.

0:23:22 > 0:23:24- Really?- Yeah - we did a tap dance!

0:23:35 > 0:23:37So, Nige, what are we doing here?

0:23:37 > 0:23:40Are we looking for some nice food for you to cook me for dinner?

0:23:40 > 0:23:42No, it's not all about feeding you.

0:23:42 > 0:23:47We're here to see an artist who is amazing with food.

0:23:47 > 0:23:48Come with me.

0:23:49 > 0:23:52- Hi there, Carl. - Hi, Nigel, how you doing?

0:23:52 > 0:23:54Yeah, good to see you. This is Michelle.

0:23:54 > 0:23:57- Hi, nice to meet you. - So, what are you doing here?

0:23:57 > 0:23:59Something a little bit strange.

0:23:59 > 0:24:02I'm looking for food in order to make a picture.

0:24:02 > 0:24:03Food to make a picture?

0:24:03 > 0:24:06Where would you start on something like that?

0:24:06 > 0:24:09Well, you've got to look at food in a completely different way.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12For example, this is curly kale.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15You might see it looks like some cabbage-y, vegetable-y thing,

0:24:15 > 0:24:20but to me, I see trees and bushes I could make using these leaves.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22- Here, for example, it's a red onion.- Yep.

0:24:22 > 0:24:25But also, if you put a nut underneath it,

0:24:25 > 0:24:28it becomes like a hot air balloon flying through the sky.

0:24:28 > 0:24:31- Looking at food in a completely different way.- Absolutely.

0:24:31 > 0:24:33So what other foods do you use?

0:24:33 > 0:24:35We've got vegetables here. Do you use anything else?

0:24:35 > 0:24:38I've made seas out of smoked salmon.

0:24:38 > 0:24:40Little villages out of garlic bulbs.

0:24:40 > 0:24:44The possibilities are endless, and food is such an amazing thing.

0:24:44 > 0:24:47It's such great organic shapes and textures and colours

0:24:47 > 0:24:51that I can do almost any scene in the world.

0:24:51 > 0:24:53Are you working on anything at the moment?

0:24:53 > 0:24:57I've got this idea to do a seascape with rolling waves coming in

0:24:57 > 0:24:59and crashing on rocks.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01So I was thinking about making potatoes for the rocks

0:25:01 > 0:25:04and perhaps some really interesting lettuce if I can find it

0:25:04 > 0:25:06will be the splash of the wave.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09- I think I saw some lettuce over there.- Let's go have a look.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14It's got pretty long leaves, this one, which are quite good.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16I think they'd be nice waves.

0:25:16 > 0:25:19We want to lay them in long straight lines.

0:25:19 > 0:25:21So the stems going horizontally.

0:25:21 > 0:25:23Yeah, yeah, like waves drifting in to shore.

0:25:24 > 0:25:27To me, food's like an artist uses paint on a palette.

0:25:27 > 0:25:31I'm working in three dimensions rather than working on an easel.

0:25:31 > 0:25:32Painting with food.

0:25:32 > 0:25:34We're arranging the food for the camera

0:25:34 > 0:25:36and taking photos as we go along.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41And we have to work fast, as the food will start to go off.

0:25:41 > 0:25:44I remember being at school and using pasta for artwork.

0:25:44 > 0:25:47- Yeah.- But nothing on this scale. - Stick it down to stuff.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50The work is based on people thinking it's a real scene,

0:25:50 > 0:25:54and then double-taking and realising it's actually made out of food.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57And I call this the pleasant deception.

0:25:57 > 0:25:59People actually like to be fooled by it.

0:26:01 > 0:26:03While Carl puts his lettuce seascape together,

0:26:03 > 0:26:07one of his fellow artists is making a pirate ship to sail on it.

0:26:08 > 0:26:10How's it coming along, Paul?

0:26:10 > 0:26:12Hopefully good. You tell me. What do you think?

0:26:12 > 0:26:15It's so impressive. It's really realistic, isn't it?

0:26:15 > 0:26:17My favourite bit is these sails here.

0:26:17 > 0:26:20- It looks like it's moving in the wind.- Yeah, that's right.

0:26:22 > 0:26:24We've lost it amongst the waves. It looks like it's sinking,

0:26:24 > 0:26:27so we need to prop it up a bit.

0:26:27 > 0:26:30- Shark's fin, a bit of mangetout. - Great idea. I love it.

0:26:32 > 0:26:34There you go, guys, it's finished.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36It looks absolutely amazing.

0:26:42 > 0:26:45Don't worry, none of this food went to waste.

0:26:45 > 0:26:47The pigs at the local farm had a lovely lunch.

0:26:47 > 0:26:49And that's us done for today, too.

0:26:49 > 0:26:52We'll see you next time on Totally Rubbish.

0:26:52 > 0:26:56Why don't you have a go at making some fake food?

0:26:56 > 0:26:59Or using your old toys for a picture frame?

0:27:01 > 0:27:03Making a milk carton pencil pot.

0:27:03 > 0:27:06Or creating a disco bottle ball.

0:27:08 > 0:27:11And start collecting driftwood or twigs.

0:27:12 > 0:27:14Scratched sunglasses.

0:27:16 > 0:27:19And old newspaper, plastic bags and leftover balloons

0:27:19 > 0:27:22for next time on Totally Rubbish.
