0:00:01 > 0:00:03I'm Nigel.

0:00:04 > 0:00:06I'm Michelle.

0:00:08 > 0:00:11'We're going to show you how to turn useless rubbish...'

0:00:11 > 0:00:13What are you going to do with this lot?

0:00:13 > 0:00:15'..into amazing, useful stuff.'

0:00:15 > 0:00:16So cool.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18'All here on...'

0:00:22 > 0:00:23Coming up - we meet an artist

0:00:23 > 0:00:27who creates incredible fashion from old plastic bags.

0:00:27 > 0:00:29We visit someone who wants

0:00:29 > 0:00:32to convert her carriers into something cool.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35And we show you how to make a nodding pet

0:00:35 > 0:00:38that would be perfect for your room.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40But first...

0:00:40 > 0:00:42Check it out - one jumping spider

0:00:43 > 0:00:45Do you guys like spiders?

0:00:45 > 0:00:46SHE SCREAMS

0:00:46 > 0:00:48'Apparently not.'

0:00:48 > 0:00:51You look like a tough lad, can you hold my spider for a second?

0:00:51 > 0:00:53'That will be a no then.'

0:00:54 > 0:00:56- Hey, girls, are you scared of spiders? - SHE SCREAMS

0:00:56 > 0:00:58'I'd say very.'

0:00:58 > 0:01:00Are you scared of spiders, girls?

0:01:00 > 0:01:02What? Argh!

0:01:03 > 0:01:06- Yeah, we did well there. - We did indeed.

0:01:06 > 0:01:07Right, I'm going to make it.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10I'm going to show you how to prank your mates out of stuff

0:01:10 > 0:01:12you have lying around.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15So here's how you make your very own jumping spider.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17First, grab yourself a piece of card,

0:01:17 > 0:01:20maybe from an old cereal packet or something like that,

0:01:20 > 0:01:22and then you need to draw your spider on it.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24I think the bigger the better for this one.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26All of his eight legs.

0:01:26 > 0:01:27There we go. Sorted.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29I've got my spider drawn on my card,

0:01:29 > 0:01:31and now all I need to do is cut it out.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33Once you've cut your spider out,

0:01:33 > 0:01:38you'll have something that looks just like that.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40Next, you need to do the spider's head.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43For that, I've got a little tip. Use the bottom of an old egg box -

0:01:43 > 0:01:47make sure you've finished with the eggs - and you're just going

0:01:47 > 0:01:50to cut out the base bit here, this square area.

0:01:50 > 0:01:51It's going to look something like this.

0:01:51 > 0:01:56And that is going to stick on to the front of the spider.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58Then for the back, for the spider's bum,

0:01:58 > 0:02:00grab yourself an old scouring pad,

0:02:00 > 0:02:03something like this you can find under the sink,

0:02:03 > 0:02:06and cut out a circle from it, just like that.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10And this is going to stick right on the back there.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12It just makes it look really effective,

0:02:12 > 0:02:14the spider's nice big back.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17Before you stick them down, you're going to paint them black.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19Start with the spider first.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22Make sure you paint the front and the back, as well,

0:02:22 > 0:02:24cos when it's jumping in the air, you'll see the under side,

0:02:24 > 0:02:26so make sure it's all covered in paint.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29Once you've painted the three sections of the spider,

0:02:29 > 0:02:31you're going to leave them to dry,

0:02:31 > 0:02:34and you'll have three bits, like this.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37And then all you're going to do is stick them on

0:02:37 > 0:02:40to the main base of the spider with some glue.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43So the circular bit is the spider's bum,

0:02:43 > 0:02:46and then this will stick on the top.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50So, once that's stuck down, you'll have something that looks like this.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52It's coming to life already.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55Next, the best bit, you need to make your jumping mechanism.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59This is really, really cool.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02Grab yourself two paperclips, large ones just like that,

0:03:02 > 0:03:05and all your going to do is open them out.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09Pull them apart, like this.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12So, they'll look something like this, OK?

0:03:12 > 0:03:15What you need to do with the ends of the paperclips

0:03:15 > 0:03:19is just bend them down really simply, like that.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24So, they're bent down, and they're bent down.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28What you now need to do is weave the two paperclips into each other.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30So, if you just watch me,

0:03:30 > 0:03:32I'm going to put the white one into the blue one.

0:03:32 > 0:03:36So, these blue legs are going into this hole, like that,

0:03:36 > 0:03:39and then you should be able to pull them both together, like this.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43There you go, and they're nice and secure.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45It's a clever trick, that.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48Right, so let's see if it works.

0:03:48 > 0:03:49Press down on the white bit...

0:03:51 > 0:03:54Perfect. Jumped off the table, it was so good!

0:03:54 > 0:03:57So, this is going to stick on the under side of your spider

0:03:57 > 0:03:59just with a bit of sticky tape.

0:03:59 > 0:04:01Grab your tape...

0:04:01 > 0:04:04stick them down, so they're nice and secure,

0:04:04 > 0:04:07and then the only final thing to do

0:04:07 > 0:04:09is just add a bit more decoration to the spider.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12I've added just some green detail just around the legs

0:04:12 > 0:04:14and on the head.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16And now, obviously, you've got to try it out.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18So, let's give this one a jump.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20Three, two, one...

0:04:20 > 0:04:24Perfect! There you have your own jumping spider.

0:04:24 > 0:04:25If you're not into spiders,

0:04:25 > 0:04:27how about trying a different kind of insect?

0:04:27 > 0:04:30Maybe a cricket or a ladybird, something like that.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32But have a go and get jumping.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09Incredibly it can take up to 1,000 years for a plastic bag

0:05:09 > 0:05:14to decompose on land, and 450 years in water,

0:05:14 > 0:05:16and I'm here to meet someone who wants to do something brilliant

0:05:16 > 0:05:18with her bundles of bags

0:05:20 > 0:05:22Meet Abi. She loves shopping.

0:05:22 > 0:05:26If she could, she'd spend every spare hour buying things.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29So, she has hundreds of shopping bags.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36She's got loads of use from the things she has bought,

0:05:36 > 0:05:38but what about the bags?

0:05:38 > 0:05:40So, Abi, what's the deal, how can we help?

0:05:40 > 0:05:42Well, I've got too many plastic bags

0:05:42 > 0:05:44and they're all just stored up at home.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47OK, and is it true that I hear you're into fashion?

0:05:47 > 0:05:50I love shopping and clothes.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52So, too many plastic bags and you love shopping.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55Well, I know someone who can make a bit of bling

0:05:55 > 0:05:58out of all of your old plastic bags. Check this out.

0:06:03 > 0:06:04I'm Adnan Bayyat.

0:06:04 > 0:06:06I'm a designer who works predominantly

0:06:06 > 0:06:08with recycled materials.

0:06:08 > 0:06:12Today, I'm going to show you how to make a dress from plastic bags.

0:06:14 > 0:06:19This is a wedding dress I made from 25,000 pieces of jigsaw

0:06:19 > 0:06:22and 5,000 metres of shoelaces.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25This dress is made from Clingfilm,

0:06:25 > 0:06:27and it was worn by Lady Gaga herself.

0:06:28 > 0:06:32Before I start making a dress, I always tend to make a design.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35I've got some ideas which I've come up with earlier,

0:06:35 > 0:06:38and I've been really inspired by the idea of swirls.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43Don't worry, this sketch can really be quite a rough starting point,

0:06:43 > 0:06:44it's just a scribble.

0:06:46 > 0:06:48Now that I'm ready to do my dress,

0:06:48 > 0:06:51I've found some plastic bags around the house.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54Roll it about three times, that's all you need.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57Now I need to cut this plastic bag into strips.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00What I usually use for a measure is my finger.

0:07:00 > 0:07:04Make sure you have enough of the plastic bags before you start.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06If you're making a design with orange plastic bags,

0:07:06 > 0:07:08you don't want to run out halfway through.

0:07:11 > 0:07:12The finger rule.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17For the next stage, I'm going to need a hula hoop

0:07:17 > 0:07:22and I've placed 14 drawing pins equally apart to form the loom.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26I'm just looping all of these together

0:07:26 > 0:07:28so I've got enough to go around the hula hoop.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36Now I'm going to show you how to weave.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39Loop it under, make a knot, you go over the first one,

0:07:39 > 0:07:41under the next one.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46Once you reach the end of the strip, you need to attach

0:07:46 > 0:07:50a different colour, and then over and under all the way around.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57There you have your swirly pattern.

0:07:57 > 0:07:58Tie off all of these loose ends

0:07:58 > 0:08:01so that the weaving that we've done doesn't fall apart.

0:08:01 > 0:08:02Tie your swirls together.

0:08:02 > 0:08:05As you're doing this, you'll realise that thinner

0:08:05 > 0:08:08plastic bags are a lot easier to work with, as they're more flexible.

0:08:08 > 0:08:12You should end up with something like this.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16What I'm going to show you now is a technique

0:08:16 > 0:08:20that makes this into a fabric so it's a lot stronger and wearable.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23Your iron has to be on a very, very hot temperature.

0:08:23 > 0:08:28'And remember, always get a grown up to help you when using one.'

0:08:28 > 0:08:31Once you're happy that your swirls have cooled, you can pick them up

0:08:31 > 0:08:34and see the end result - very sturdy and solid.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37Using all of these sections, I am going to create

0:08:37 > 0:08:38the front of the dress.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53I'm attaching the clasps to make sure that the dress holds together.

0:08:55 > 0:08:59Ta-dah! There you go, this is how I turn a load of plastic bags

0:08:59 > 0:09:01and bin liners into a dress.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09And here is my friend Jo wearing the dress.

0:09:12 > 0:09:14- Do you like it? - Does it look good?

0:09:14 > 0:09:15It looks fantastic.

0:09:19 > 0:09:24Adnan used 250 orange bags and 60 bin bags to make his fabulous dress,

0:09:24 > 0:09:28and it's perfect inspiration for how we can help Abi.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30Are you ready to find out what we're going to do with

0:09:30 > 0:09:32- all of your plastic bags?- Yes.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35We're going to make a plastic bag belt.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37That sounds awesome.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39OK, I'm going to show you how we do it.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42The first thing we need to do is to get some old card like this.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45You might get it from an old cardboard box

0:09:45 > 0:09:46or something like that.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49Cut it into a long strip like this that might look good

0:09:49 > 0:09:53- as sort of as a half belt, demi-belt thing.- Yeah.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57Cut off the corners to add a little flare.

0:09:57 > 0:09:58Beautiful.

0:09:58 > 0:10:02Now, the next thing we need to do is we need to put some holes

0:10:02 > 0:10:04all the way down the edges.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07To make our holes, we're going to use a hole punch, like this.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15- And then you have to do the other side, as well.- OK.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18And, while you're doing that, I'm going to go onto the next part,

0:10:18 > 0:10:21which is getting our plastic bags that you've collected.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25One of Adnan's top tips is to make sure

0:10:25 > 0:10:28you've got enough plastic bags, and we need to cut them into strips.

0:10:28 > 0:10:31Now, these strips are going to come out a bit like this,

0:10:31 > 0:10:35and that's what we're going to use to thread into the holes.

0:10:35 > 0:10:37Got that, Abi?

0:10:37 > 0:10:39'Just lay a bag out and cut down its length.'

0:10:40 > 0:10:43'Your strips should be roughly two centimetres wide.'

0:10:45 > 0:10:48As you can see, I've cut lots and lots of strips here.

0:10:49 > 0:10:53What we're going to do is we're going to use a big plastic needle,

0:10:53 > 0:10:57like this, and we need to thread our plastic bag strips through it.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04Once we've threaded our needle, you can do any kind of stitching

0:11:04 > 0:11:07in these holes, but I'm going to show you a few different styles.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10The first one - the needle goes through the hole.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13Pull it all the way through to the end...

0:11:13 > 0:11:16and then we are going around the outside,

0:11:16 > 0:11:18under, and through that hole again.

0:11:23 > 0:11:27That's it. So it looks like it just goes round and round.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29How often do you go shopping, Abi?

0:11:29 > 0:11:32Probably every weekend.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35- Every weekend?- Yeah.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38And do you buy things every time, or do you sometimes just go to look?

0:11:38 > 0:11:41Erm, I buy things every time. Clothes mainly.

0:11:41 > 0:11:45- Are you going to wear your new belt, too?- Of course.- OK.

0:11:45 > 0:11:50What we need to do now is to cut the excess bits off...

0:11:50 > 0:11:52and stick them down.

0:11:55 > 0:11:57- Starting to look good, yeah? - Yeah.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00OK, next we're going to choose another colour.

0:12:00 > 0:12:03- What colour would you like?- Blue.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05Blue? OK. Blue next.

0:12:06 > 0:12:08Thread it exactly as we did before.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12Instead of going round the outside this time,

0:12:12 > 0:12:15- let's go across the middle.- OK.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18Now, when you have run out of plastic bag like this,

0:12:18 > 0:12:21all you need to do is cut it,

0:12:21 > 0:12:24put some sticky tape there,

0:12:24 > 0:12:25stick it down,

0:12:25 > 0:12:27get another strip of blue,

0:12:27 > 0:12:29then you carry on where you left off.

0:12:29 > 0:12:31So, you would have gone through there.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37- Have you got a brother?- Yes.

0:12:37 > 0:12:39Is he doing any cool things?

0:12:39 > 0:12:43Yeah, he's actually doing a marathon in a couple of days.

0:12:43 > 0:12:44- Is he?- Yeah.

0:12:44 > 0:12:48- That's cool. Are you going to go and see him?- No.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51- Why not? - I'm going shopping with my friend.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54Shopping, of course. You're going shopping?!

0:12:54 > 0:12:58- Yeah.- He understands, yeah? - Yeah, I think.

0:12:58 > 0:12:59Sorry, bruv.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01We're sewing our colours diagonally,

0:13:01 > 0:13:05but have fun coming up with your own patterns.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08So, now that we have our belt, it's time to make the ties

0:13:08 > 0:13:11for the end and we use these three holes that we made on each end.

0:13:11 > 0:13:15So, you take those three, and I'm going to take a blue one,

0:13:15 > 0:13:18an orange and a yellow.

0:13:18 > 0:13:20Take your strands and fasten three of them

0:13:20 > 0:13:23through the holes at each end of your belt.

0:13:23 > 0:13:29So, now all we need to do is to plait these three strands that we have,

0:13:29 > 0:13:32and they're going to make a beautiful little tie for us.

0:13:32 > 0:13:36Take one of the outside strands into the middle.

0:13:36 > 0:13:40Then take the other outside strand and also put it into the middle.

0:13:40 > 0:13:42Now you have a new set of outside strands.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44Keep going and this makes a plait.

0:13:47 > 0:13:51So, once you've plaited your ties, all you need to do

0:13:51 > 0:13:54is tie a knot in the end, chop this end off...

0:13:55 > 0:13:58So, there you have it - a plastic bag belt.

0:13:58 > 0:14:00Do you want to try it on?

0:14:01 > 0:14:04Put that around your waist.

0:14:04 > 0:14:06And tie it off here.

0:14:07 > 0:14:10- Boom. What do you think? - It's amazing. I love it!

0:14:12 > 0:14:14Why don't you give it a go?

0:14:15 > 0:14:19To make a plastic bag belt, here's what you have to do.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22Stage one - measure out your card and cut it out.

0:14:26 > 0:14:30Stage two - get a hole punch and punch along the edge of your card.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36Stage three - take your plastic bags and cut them into strips.

0:14:39 > 0:14:43Stage four - using a needle, weave your bag thread through the holes.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49Stage five - you can experiment with colours

0:14:49 > 0:14:51and patterns to create your own design.

0:14:52 > 0:14:56Stage six - plait three strips of plastic bag together

0:14:56 > 0:14:57to make the belt ties.

0:14:57 > 0:14:59Tidy up the ends by tying a knot.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09Still to come - we help a graffiti artist

0:15:09 > 0:15:12breathe new life into a skate park.

0:15:12 > 0:15:16And we show you how to make a cool easel out of old lolly sticks.

0:15:16 > 0:15:17But first, Totally Famous.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21Introducing Bridget Riley,

0:15:21 > 0:15:25totally famous for making us see art in a very different way.

0:15:25 > 0:15:29Bridget Riley became famous in the 1960s, when she developed

0:15:29 > 0:15:33a new style of painting called optical art, or "op art".

0:15:35 > 0:15:37Here she used black and white patterns

0:15:37 > 0:15:40and shapes to play tricks on our eyes.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43Whoa! Feeling sick yet?

0:15:43 > 0:15:45The public loved it.

0:15:45 > 0:15:48Op art was cool, and Bridget Riley became Great Britain's

0:15:48 > 0:15:51number one art celebrity.

0:15:51 > 0:15:53Soon, her eye-popping patterns started appearing

0:15:53 > 0:15:57on everything from furnishings to fashion.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59But this made Bridget very angry.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02She felt her patterns had been pinched and threatened to sue.

0:16:03 > 0:16:06So, a law was passed to protect her designs.

0:16:06 > 0:16:10She then continued pushing the boundaries of op art,

0:16:10 > 0:16:14experimenting with colour and filling whole rooms with her work.

0:16:14 > 0:16:17She even decorated a hospital with a pattern

0:16:17 > 0:16:19designed to relax the patients.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22Today, her paintings are shown all over the world.

0:16:22 > 0:16:24So, look out for the totally talented

0:16:24 > 0:16:26and amazingly eye-popping Bridget Riley.

0:16:36 > 0:16:39Today, we're going to make a lollipop stick easel.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42Which you can use as a place setting for your parties.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48First, you get four lolly sticks,

0:16:48 > 0:16:51but now you only need two of them

0:16:51 > 0:16:55and you get one down, diagonally, and then you get the other one

0:16:55 > 0:16:58and put it just touching each other on that bit.

0:16:58 > 0:17:02Then you glue the top there.

0:17:02 > 0:17:08And then you just stick it on and hold it down and wait for it to dry.

0:17:12 > 0:17:16You need the third lolly stick on its side

0:17:16 > 0:17:20pointing upwards, like this, so you can put the paper on it.

0:17:22 > 0:17:24It's made an A shape.

0:17:25 > 0:17:27Now we leave the glue to dry.

0:17:28 > 0:17:32The next thing you need to do is you need to get your fourth

0:17:32 > 0:17:36lolly stick and bend it a tiny, tiny bit.

0:17:36 > 0:17:39So, snap it, not so it breaks off, but just like this.

0:17:39 > 0:17:44Put some glue just at the top of the back of the A, just like that.

0:17:44 > 0:17:50And, finally, you get the bend of your lolly stick

0:17:50 > 0:17:53and stick it where you've put the glue.

0:17:53 > 0:17:55And then you just leave it to dry.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58You need to eat a lot of lollies to make this.

0:17:58 > 0:18:01What's your favourite flavour lolly, then?

0:18:01 > 0:18:03I quite like strawberry lolly.

0:18:03 > 0:18:05What's your favourite flavour?

0:18:05 > 0:18:07Mango and lemon.

0:18:07 > 0:18:08I wish I said mango now.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12They're dry now, let's paint them.

0:18:12 > 0:18:16I'm going to paint mine red, cos my favourite lolly is strawberry.

0:18:16 > 0:18:17I'm going to paint mine green,

0:18:17 > 0:18:19because my favourite colour's green.

0:18:22 > 0:18:24(Did I get paint on my shirt?)

0:18:27 > 0:18:29I've finished. Now let's leave it to dry.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35Now our easels are dry, all we have to do is

0:18:35 > 0:18:37write our names on a piece of card.

0:18:41 > 0:18:44There you have it - your very own lollipop stick easel.

0:18:44 > 0:18:47All ready for your party.

0:18:47 > 0:18:49I like how you've written your name.

0:18:52 > 0:18:55The best part about making a lollipop stick easel

0:18:55 > 0:18:58is that you can really impress your guests at a party.

0:19:24 > 0:19:27What can you make from a bin bag full of rubbish?

0:19:27 > 0:19:29Just have a look at this.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32Ooh! What are you going to do with this lot?

0:19:32 > 0:19:33Well, I'm going to show you

0:19:33 > 0:19:36how to make something really cool for your room.

0:19:36 > 0:19:39'You'll need a couple of crisp tubes...

0:19:39 > 0:19:41'four pennies,

0:19:41 > 0:19:43'a wooden stirrer,

0:19:43 > 0:19:44'a glue stick,

0:19:44 > 0:19:46'some old wool or string,

0:19:46 > 0:19:48'a piece of old card,

0:19:48 > 0:19:50'scissors, tape,

0:19:50 > 0:19:53'a bit of old newspaper,

0:19:53 > 0:19:55'and some paint.'

0:19:55 > 0:19:58We are going to make a nodding dog!

0:19:58 > 0:19:59No way, you're having a laugh.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02- You're going to make that out of this?- Yeah, man.

0:20:02 > 0:20:04- With this rubbish? - Yeah, it's so simple.

0:20:04 > 0:20:07It's amazing. OK, let's do it.

0:20:07 > 0:20:10So, first of all, grab yourself a couple of old crisps containers.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13One in tact, one cut in half.

0:20:13 > 0:20:17Next thing you need to do is cut four holes in one side...

0:20:17 > 0:20:19- All right. - ..of the crisps container

0:20:19 > 0:20:21and this is going to be for where our legs go.

0:20:22 > 0:20:25You can just use a pencil to kind of punch it through.

0:20:25 > 0:20:29A pencil's quite good, cos it's circular so it just keeps that...

0:20:29 > 0:20:31Yeah, that's working, I think I'm through.

0:20:31 > 0:20:34For the legs all you need to do is get some rolled up newspaper,

0:20:34 > 0:20:38roll it into a tube and then just stick it with sticky tape.

0:20:38 > 0:20:40Like these.

0:20:40 > 0:20:42Oh!

0:20:42 > 0:20:44I did it already, I'm thinking ahead, you see?

0:20:44 > 0:20:46You're all prepared, you are.

0:20:46 > 0:20:48'Just push the rolled newspaper into the holes

0:20:48 > 0:20:52'and your nodding dog's body will be ready to stand.'

0:20:52 > 0:20:54So, obviously, we want some detail on our dog,

0:20:54 > 0:20:56we want to give it some good facial features.

0:20:56 > 0:20:58'So, on an old piece of cardboard,

0:20:58 > 0:21:01'maybe you've got a cereal box, you're going to draw your features.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04'My dog will have pointy ears, round eyes,

0:21:04 > 0:21:07'a big smile and, of course, four paws.

0:21:07 > 0:21:09'But feel free to come up with your own design -

0:21:09 > 0:21:11'the options are endless.'

0:21:11 > 0:21:12So, you just cut all those out

0:21:12 > 0:21:14and cos this guy takes a bit of time,

0:21:14 > 0:21:17I'm going to show you what they look like when they're cut out.

0:21:17 > 0:21:20So, you've got your four paws, your mouth,

0:21:20 > 0:21:23your eyes and your two spiky ears.

0:21:23 > 0:21:25- Once you've got all those cut out... - Yeah?

0:21:25 > 0:21:28..what you're going to do is paint everything.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31So, you want to paint your body with your legs

0:21:31 > 0:21:33- and you want to paint your head... - OK, cool.

0:21:33 > 0:21:37Then, once it's dry, it'll look something like this.

0:21:37 > 0:21:40I've got my four paws already stuck on there.

0:21:40 > 0:21:44And, for the face, I've got my eyes already stuck on, and the ears.

0:21:44 > 0:21:45So, we've got the mouth here,

0:21:45 > 0:21:48and I've done a bit more detail with the mouth.

0:21:48 > 0:21:50Black marker pen, got his little teeth in there.

0:21:50 > 0:21:53- Teeth in.- Missing a nose. - Shall we get that on there?

0:21:53 > 0:21:55Let's get that on there, you go for it.

0:21:55 > 0:21:57- Just glue that up.- Yeah.

0:21:57 > 0:21:59Just stick the mouth to it. Simple.

0:22:01 > 0:22:03- That's good.- It's lovely.

0:22:03 > 0:22:06So, how do we get our little head-bobbing going on?

0:22:06 > 0:22:09This is the business, this is what makes it,

0:22:09 > 0:22:12it's that, it's the whole...

0:22:12 > 0:22:14HE BEATBOXES

0:22:14 > 0:22:17So, you need to get yourself an old wooden stirrer.

0:22:17 > 0:22:21- OK.- Four pennies, two on either end of the stick,

0:22:21 > 0:22:24and then I've just attached them with some sticky tape.

0:22:24 > 0:22:26- All right. - So they're nice and secure.

0:22:26 > 0:22:30In the middle of the stick, I've just tied some old wool.

0:22:30 > 0:22:32A double knot so it stays secure.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35Just stick it under here in between the two ears,

0:22:35 > 0:22:36so it's nice and central.

0:22:36 > 0:22:39Get your body, and feed these pennies

0:22:39 > 0:22:42- underneath here like this, yeah. - Yeah.

0:22:42 > 0:22:46And then, with your string, you're just pulling it taut,

0:22:46 > 0:22:49stick this down with sticky tape here...

0:22:49 > 0:22:52and then you've got your nodding mechanism.

0:22:52 > 0:22:55- Nice, well done. - It's really simple, isn't it?

0:22:55 > 0:22:58It is a lot easier than I thought it was going to be.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01Some finishing touches, like a collar and spots,

0:23:01 > 0:23:02really make him look great.

0:23:02 > 0:23:05And if dogs aren't your bobbing pet of choice,

0:23:05 > 0:23:09you can easily modify the design to make a cat or a mouse.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22Well, at least we've now got something to do

0:23:22 > 0:23:24with all these crisp containers.

0:23:24 > 0:23:26I know. And to think we throw away

0:23:26 > 0:23:29over 3 million tonnes of food packaging every year

0:23:29 > 0:23:32when we could be making things like that.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34That's a pretty scary number of nodding dogs!

0:23:34 > 0:23:37I knew a dog once - he really stank.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39How did you stop him smelling?

0:23:39 > 0:23:42I got him to hold his nose.

0:23:42 > 0:23:44THEY LAUGH

0:23:46 > 0:23:48DOG HOWLS

0:23:48 > 0:23:50It wasn't that bad.

0:24:03 > 0:24:05Michelle, there you are.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07- What time do you call this? - I've been looking for you.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10- Yeah, yeah, yeah. - So, what are we doing here?

0:24:10 > 0:24:13Basically, I'm just covering this wall in some old white paint

0:24:13 > 0:24:15cos we're going to create something really, really special.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18We're going to bring a whole new lease of life to this old skate park

0:24:18 > 0:24:22and there's a guy who's absolutely wicked who'll help us do it.

0:24:22 > 0:24:24But, because you arrived late, you can take that.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27Here's the rest of the paint, and there's still a bit

0:24:27 > 0:24:29to finish over there, so do you want to crack on?

0:24:36 > 0:24:38- Hey Squirl, you all right? - Hello, how's it going?

0:24:38 > 0:24:40- Good, yeah not bad. - All right, guys?

0:24:40 > 0:24:42- All right, mate. - I've done the whole wall.

0:24:42 > 0:24:44- Wicked.- It's finished.- Already.

0:24:44 > 0:24:47So, Squirl, this is our space that we want to transform.

0:24:47 > 0:24:49Have you got any ideas how we can jazz it up

0:24:49 > 0:24:51and make it look a lot better?

0:24:51 > 0:24:53Well, it's quite a sort of old, gnarly, old place,

0:24:53 > 0:24:55so I think we need to really brighten it up,

0:24:55 > 0:24:56get some characters in there,

0:24:56 > 0:25:00make them really, really lively, make it a bit more friendly in here.

0:25:00 > 0:25:02Sounds great. Can we get involved? Can we help you out at all?

0:25:02 > 0:25:05Sure, yeah, there's loads of stuff that you can do.

0:25:05 > 0:25:09- Brilliant, go team. Well, let's get cracking then.- Wicked.

0:25:10 > 0:25:12The first thing I need to do

0:25:12 > 0:25:15when I get to the wall is start sketching out using the spray paint

0:25:15 > 0:25:18and getting an outline on everything.

0:25:18 > 0:25:21Then I go in and start putting in block colour

0:25:21 > 0:25:24in the sketch lines that I've done, start filling in loads

0:25:24 > 0:25:25and loads of different colours,

0:25:25 > 0:25:28not too similar ones next to each other.

0:25:29 > 0:25:31It's not easy, it's a big old wall.

0:25:33 > 0:25:36This is looking really good, I'm loving the colour.

0:25:36 > 0:25:38I'd quite like something this on my bedroom wall, actually.

0:25:42 > 0:25:45- How's it going, Michelle? - Good, yeah.

0:25:46 > 0:25:50It's amazing how it goes from a small design on a piece of paper

0:25:50 > 0:25:52to this massive piece on the wall.

0:25:57 > 0:25:59What's this stage we're doing here?

0:25:59 > 0:26:02Just getting loads of highlights and lowlights into it,

0:26:02 > 0:26:04some shadows and depth,

0:26:04 > 0:26:07making the characters a bit more curved so they're not so flat.

0:26:10 > 0:26:12So, this is LJ.

0:26:12 > 0:26:14LJ, is it fair to say that you kind of run this place?

0:26:14 > 0:26:17- Yeah.- So what kind of things do people get up to here?

0:26:17 > 0:26:20We get people rollerblading, skateboarding, scooters, BMXs -

0:26:20 > 0:26:22any sort of extreme sport, really.

0:26:22 > 0:26:24Well, as you can see, we've kind of taken over a bit

0:26:24 > 0:26:27and what do you think of what the guys are doing so far?

0:26:27 > 0:26:29I'm really enjoying it. I like the colours,

0:26:29 > 0:26:31it's nice and vibrant and makes the park look more alive.

0:26:31 > 0:26:33- So we've got thumbs up from LJ? - Yeah.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36- I'm going to crack on back to work. See you later, mate.- See you.

0:26:38 > 0:26:40It's all about the finishing touches,

0:26:40 > 0:26:42getting the really fine detail in at the end.

0:26:42 > 0:26:46You can't just leave half done, so you need to make sure those

0:26:46 > 0:26:49last bits are really, really sharp, cos that's what makes the piece.

0:26:56 > 0:27:00So, there you go - an old skate park given a new lease of life.

0:27:00 > 0:27:02Yeah, I feel good after doing that.

0:27:02 > 0:27:04We've brightened the place up a bit.

0:27:10 > 0:27:12Awesome. Nice work.

0:27:12 > 0:27:15Yep, we'll see you next time on Totally Rubbish.

0:27:16 > 0:27:20So, why don't you have a go at making a scary jumping spider...

0:27:20 > 0:27:22..weaving a plastic bag belt...

0:27:24 > 0:27:27..building a lollipop stick easel...

0:27:27 > 0:27:29..or putting together your very own nodding dog.

0:27:31 > 0:27:35And start collecting your old takeaway cups...

0:27:35 > 0:27:37..your leftover cardboard...

0:27:37 > 0:27:42..and get hold of an unwanted tie for next time on Totally Rubbish.
