0:01:39 > 0:01:41Let's meet today's two teams.

0:01:41 > 0:01:45ALL: We are the Three Profiteers, and we're going to trade our way

0:01:45 > 0:01:46to the USA!

0:01:48 > 0:01:503 Profiteers are from Kent.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52They're wizards with facts and figures.

0:01:52 > 0:01:54We are the 3 Profiteers.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57We chose this name because we think it's original

0:01:57 > 0:02:00and we aim to make a profit on everything we sell.

0:02:01 > 0:02:02Hi, my name is Henry.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05My friends say I'm competitive, and I hate losing,

0:02:05 > 0:02:07and that's one of the reasons why

0:02:07 > 0:02:09I want to get stuck in to the competition.

0:02:10 > 0:02:14The reason we need Rob on our team is because he's a great bargainer.

0:02:14 > 0:02:15I usually trade

0:02:15 > 0:02:18all cricket stuff, because I'm into cricket.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23Hi, my name's Angus,

0:02:23 > 0:02:26I like coming up with cool new ideas to do with trading.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29For example, I've been growing plants - tomatoes, courgettes -

0:02:29 > 0:02:31and trading them for other produce.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34I think most of us aspire to go into business and trading

0:02:34 > 0:02:36when we're older.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39But 3 Profiteers are up against tough competition.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41Yay-hey!

0:02:41 > 0:02:46ALL: We are Impulse and we are going to trade our way to the USA!

0:02:47 > 0:02:51We are Team Impulse because we feel, to earn that money from business,

0:02:51 > 0:02:53you need the impulse, you need the instinct.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57Impulse are from East London

0:02:57 > 0:03:00and they're convinced they'll be great at the selling.

0:03:00 > 0:03:01To me, Honour's like a knife -

0:03:01 > 0:03:04he's sharp and he cuts

0:03:04 > 0:03:05straight through to business.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08And I like to talk to people a lot.

0:03:10 > 0:03:11Geraint is the person

0:03:11 > 0:03:13who spots the bargains,

0:03:13 > 0:03:15what to do, what not to do.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20I think Jason is like the number-cruncher,

0:03:20 > 0:03:24the mathematician, he knows how to work everything out.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27Hopefully we'll get far in life with business.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30So it's pioneering 3 Profiteers

0:03:30 > 0:03:32taking on Impulse, the deal-makers.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35I'm going to put their trading skills to the test.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39Which team will take the most money and win today's challenge?

0:03:43 > 0:03:46Where are we? A mediaeval castle?

0:03:46 > 0:03:48Hundreds of people on a battlefield, fighting?

0:03:48 > 0:03:52Others dressed up as knights and jesters?

0:03:52 > 0:03:54What's it all got to do with buying and selling?

0:03:54 > 0:03:58Let's reveal today's Trade Challenge to the teams.

0:03:58 > 0:03:59Welcome, everybody.

0:03:59 > 0:04:01Your trading challenge is to set up

0:04:01 > 0:04:06a historical hats and accessories stall at a massive mediaeval fair

0:04:06 > 0:04:09set in the grounds of a 900-year-old castle.

0:04:09 > 0:04:13But first, you've got to buy products for your stall.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16That's why we're here at Party Packs.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19They sell all types of historical hats and accessories,

0:04:19 > 0:04:21from shields to plastic swords.

0:04:21 > 0:04:25There's so much choice here at the fancy-dress warehouse,

0:04:25 > 0:04:28so the teams have to pick the right products

0:04:28 > 0:04:29to sell at the mediaeval skirmish.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35There'll be thousands of people stepping back in time,

0:04:35 > 0:04:39but what will they be interested in buying from our traders' stalls?

0:04:43 > 0:04:45This is your trading fund.

0:04:45 > 0:04:47Please spend it wisely

0:04:47 > 0:04:52and make sure you buy enough good stock for your stall.

0:04:52 > 0:04:58So, what will Impulse and 3 Profiteers spend their £75 on today?

0:04:58 > 0:05:01The first rule of trading is research.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03They now have 15 minutes to decide.

0:05:06 > 0:05:07They're not too badly priced.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11This sword over here, rather than this one.

0:05:11 > 0:05:13These goblets are good.

0:05:13 > 0:05:15THEY LAUGH

0:05:15 > 0:05:17Not the best look for you.

0:05:17 > 0:05:203 Profiteers go straight for the hats.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23So what do you think of these Roman helmets?

0:05:23 > 0:05:25Yeah, shall I try it?

0:05:26 > 0:05:28It's not very comfortable.

0:05:28 > 0:05:32- I think the wizards...- And if we're talking about a mediaeval skirmish.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35The Romans weren't around that much in mediaeval times.

0:05:35 > 0:05:37You're right, Angus. You do know your history -

0:05:37 > 0:05:40the Romans weren't around in mediaeval times.

0:05:42 > 0:05:47I think the axes and the swords will sell really well as a family.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49- I like these swords. - These swords will sell.

0:05:49 > 0:05:54- Swords with shields.- OK. Quite popular, swords.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56So, Henry, what's caught your eye?

0:05:56 > 0:06:00Um, quite a lot of things, but we've enjoyed looking at the axes,

0:06:00 > 0:06:04we think that this is quite fun for five, six-year-olds to play with,

0:06:04 > 0:06:07especially boys. They enjoy those type of things.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12Impulse aren't thinking about what boys would buy.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14Cleverly, they're focusing on the girls.

0:06:16 > 0:06:20- THEY LAUGH - So like, 57p...

0:06:20 > 0:06:24- Are we going to be doing silver too? - We should do silver and gold.- Yeah.

0:06:25 > 0:06:29My top trading tip is, when buying your product,

0:06:29 > 0:06:32consider other people's taste, not just your own,

0:06:32 > 0:06:35because customers love variety and choice.

0:06:37 > 0:06:403 Profiteers are looking at lots of different products.

0:06:40 > 0:06:45Cats might attract adults a little...as a garden feature.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48- Yeah...- Not that it's got much to do with mediaeval times.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51Yes, Angus, plastic cats aren't very mediaeval.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53Will people buy them?

0:06:54 > 0:06:58- Oh no, we definitely have to get these.- Yeah, yeah.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00OK, so these wizard hats...

0:07:00 > 0:07:04There's an attraction for these. However, they are rather expensive.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07- £3...- 86. - I don't think it's worth...

0:07:07 > 0:07:09Whether it's worth the price.

0:07:10 > 0:07:14It looks like both teams think hats will be popular

0:07:14 > 0:07:18at the mediaeval skirmish, but which ones are they going to buy?

0:07:18 > 0:07:21- It's not bad.- I think it looks really attractive.- Yeah.

0:07:21 > 0:07:23- What, so this?- Yeah.

0:07:24 > 0:07:28That's it, enough time looking - now it's decision time.

0:07:31 > 0:07:32Kate runs this warehouse.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35She knows all about the fancy-dress business.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39Impulse and 3 Profiteers have to get the best prices from her.

0:07:39 > 0:07:44In terms of negotiating price, what is your strategy?

0:07:44 > 0:07:46Well, of course, we'll put in a low offer,

0:07:46 > 0:07:49they'll probably go a bit higher than our offer,

0:07:49 > 0:07:53then we'll try and be only a gradual step up

0:07:53 > 0:07:55and see if they'll buy it.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58Give me an example of something that you've seen.

0:07:58 > 0:08:04- Well, the tiara. For the gold one it's about 52p for 10 pieces.- Yeah.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06We're planning to sell it probably at 60p,

0:08:06 > 0:08:09so we get like an 8p-increase in the price.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12Now they've got to negotiate with Kate.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15Remember, they've got £75 to spend.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17They need to haggle for the best prices now,

0:08:17 > 0:08:20so they can take the most money when they sell tomorrow.

0:08:20 > 0:08:22- Hello.- Hi, how are you getting on?

0:08:22 > 0:08:243 Profiteers are up first.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27They go straight for the jesters' hats.

0:08:27 > 0:08:32Would you be willing to sell them for ten for £22?

0:08:32 > 0:08:35The lowest I'll go on these is £2.40 each,

0:08:35 > 0:08:37that would make it £24.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39Are you sure you can't do £23.50?

0:08:39 > 0:08:43- £2.35, isn't it?- 23...- Go on then, I'll do £2.35,

0:08:43 > 0:08:45but that's the lowest I'll go on them.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48- How many do you want? - Ten, please, at £2.35

0:08:48 > 0:08:51£23.50 - that's a lot.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54It's a third of their trade fund on ten jester hats.

0:08:55 > 0:08:59Now for those plastic cats that could be a risky strategy.

0:08:59 > 0:09:05- I would do three cats...- Yep. - ..OK, for £8.50.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07Three cats for £8.40?

0:09:07 > 0:09:09You drive a hard bargain, you guys!

0:09:09 > 0:09:13Go on, then. Three cats for £8.40.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16Please can we have three wizard hats for £11?

0:09:16 > 0:09:20Well, the price was £3.86 and you only want to give me £3.66,

0:09:20 > 0:09:23so let's say £3.75.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27- £3.72?- £3.72.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30- That's lovely, so three of those. - Shall we pay you?

0:09:30 > 0:09:323 Profiteers are haggling over pennies here,

0:09:32 > 0:09:35but every penny counts when it comes to making a profit.

0:09:36 > 0:09:41We'd like to buy the inflatable St George hammer, 20 in all...

0:09:41 > 0:09:46- 20 in all, yes.- ..and we'd like to get an offer of £5.80.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49I'll do them for you for £6, OK?

0:09:49 > 0:09:54- £5.85?- £6 is my best deal. That is a really good price.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57So it's £6 for 20 hammers.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02Now it's the turn of Impulse to negotiate.

0:10:02 > 0:10:05Hi, so how are you getting on? Have you made your choices?

0:10:05 > 0:10:06- Yes.- What are you going for?

0:10:06 > 0:10:09- We've decided on your hero warrior shields...- OK.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12So, tell me, what are you prepared to pay for them each?

0:10:12 > 0:10:16We're planning to, kind of, get 30,

0:10:16 > 0:10:21- but we're planning to only pay for 20 of them.- Oh!

0:10:21 > 0:10:23I'm not sure that's going to work!

0:10:23 > 0:10:27So Jason's tactic is to buy in bulk and get ten for free.

0:10:28 > 0:10:32The price if you buy ten plus is 25p each which is a good price

0:10:32 > 0:10:35because I think you can make a reasonable profit on these.

0:10:35 > 0:10:40We're prepared to buy each one for 20p each.

0:10:40 > 0:10:4320p? Mm, I don't think I can do 20p.

0:10:43 > 0:10:4823p is going to be my absolute rock-bottom price on those.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51- That's like 40p off.- OK. - Does that sound good?

0:10:51 > 0:10:57With that 40p reduction, they buy 30 shields for £6.90.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01Jason, with his head for figures, is still leading the deal-making.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04How much can you do the Viking helmets for, Kate?

0:11:04 > 0:11:10- How many were you thinking about buying?- 15 for the price of 13 or 14.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13He's at it again, wanting freebies for a bulk buy.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16Kate's not playing the game.

0:11:16 > 0:11:21- Well, let's say you can have 15 at 75p each.- Thank you.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26Impulse now launch into their big trade strategy.

0:11:26 > 0:11:31They want to sell girls the idea of being a princess for a day.

0:11:32 > 0:11:36We want to buy both plastic tiaras in gold, and also the silver.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38- Good idea.- 13 each.

0:11:38 > 0:11:41- 13 of each. What did you want to pay for them all together?- £12.22.

0:11:41 > 0:11:46£12.22. That's 47p each... Yep, that's fine. Yep, 47p each.

0:11:46 > 0:11:51That's £12 on 26 tiaras.

0:11:51 > 0:11:53They want to buy rings to go with them.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56We're planning to buy 50 for £4.

0:11:56 > 0:12:00- So you want to buy 50 rings for £4. - Yeah.

0:12:00 > 0:12:03That's making them 8p each,

0:12:03 > 0:12:06which is more than I was going to sell them to you for.

0:12:07 > 0:12:11Oh dear, Impulse didn't see the rings are 6p each

0:12:11 > 0:12:13and they've offered to pay Kate more.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16It says 6p each or 7p each.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20They're 6p each. If you buy ten or more, you can have them for 6p each.

0:12:20 > 0:12:24- So how many did you want to buy? 50? - Yes, please.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27So, 50... That's going to cost you £3 for 50 rings.

0:12:27 > 0:12:28That's absolutely fine.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31Although they offered her a higher price,

0:12:31 > 0:12:34Kate's let them have those rings for 6p each.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37Top Tip to all traders...

0:12:37 > 0:12:41You must know your cost price before going into a negotiation,

0:12:41 > 0:12:44otherwise you could lose out on making a profit.

0:12:44 > 0:12:46# You're hot and you're cold... #

0:12:46 > 0:12:51So, the deals are done. What have each team bought with that £75?

0:12:53 > 0:12:593 Profiteers spent £35 on hats - three wizard and ten jesters.

0:12:59 > 0:13:00That's a lot.

0:13:00 > 0:13:05Buying three plastic cats for more than £8 could be risky.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08And they've gone big on lots of inflatable hammers, flags and axes.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15Impulse want to sell a "princess for a day" idea.

0:13:15 > 0:13:19They ended up spending £20 on tiaras and rings,

0:13:19 > 0:13:23the rest of Viking helmets and warrior shields and swords.

0:13:23 > 0:13:25So it's expensive hats, fit for a king,

0:13:25 > 0:13:29versus everything that glitters, for the princesses.

0:13:29 > 0:13:35Now it's all about who sells the most at the mediaeval skirmish.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38Only one team will win and still be in with a chance

0:13:38 > 0:13:39of trading their way to the USA,

0:13:39 > 0:13:42to become Britain's best young traders.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44Let the battle commence!

0:13:51 > 0:13:53It's the selling day.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57A day of fun and frolics and blood and guts and gore.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01We're at Berkeley Castle in Gloucester,

0:14:01 > 0:14:04where thousands of visitors are dressed up, for a weekend

0:14:05 > 0:14:07of mediaeval fun and battlefield madness.

0:14:09 > 0:14:10Charge!

0:14:10 > 0:14:13But what will people here be looking to buy?

0:14:14 > 0:14:17Well, here we are at Berkeley Skirmish.

0:14:17 > 0:14:18It's big, isn't it?

0:14:18 > 0:14:19ALL: Yes.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22Both teams have exactly three hours' selling time.

0:14:22 > 0:14:26The team that takes the most money wins today's challenge

0:14:26 > 0:14:29and has a shot at one of our semifinals.

0:14:29 > 0:14:35Win that and you'll be trading in our Grand Final, in New York.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37- Are you ready to sell? - ALL: Yes.

0:14:37 > 0:14:39Well, hurry up, then! Time is money! Come on!

0:14:39 > 0:14:41THEY LAUGH

0:14:45 > 0:14:46With just three hours to sell,

0:21:44 > 0:21:45but go a lot down.

0:21:45 > 0:21:50They're selling a lot of things, but does dropping their prices mean

0:21:52 > 0:21:55Shields, only 20p! Only 20p!

0:23:25 > 0:23:29Impulse do have products left. 3 Profiteers have sold out.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32Which team has taken the most money?

0:23:32 > 0:23:36The winners today could get through to the big New York final,

0:23:36 > 0:23:39where they will compete against another team

0:23:39 > 0:23:41to be named Britain's best young traders.

0:23:44 > 0:23:47Your challenge was to sell historical hats and accessories

0:23:47 > 0:23:49at Berkeley Skirmish.

0:23:49 > 0:23:53If your takings are good enough to get you through to a semifinal,

0:23:53 > 0:23:55what will you do differently?

0:23:55 > 0:23:59I think we'll improve our customer services and our tactics.

0:23:59 > 0:24:00We also have to realise

0:24:00 > 0:24:03that there is more than one customer, when it comes to selling.

0:24:03 > 0:24:07And the 3 Profiteers, how do you think you've done?

0:24:07 > 0:24:10I think we did really well out of our £75, making a lot of profit.

0:24:10 > 0:24:12What were your highlights?

0:24:12 > 0:24:16Well, the cats seemed to sell very well, but we didn't buy enough,

0:24:16 > 0:24:18so we were sold out after a while.

0:24:18 > 0:24:19Do you think you've won?

0:24:19 > 0:24:21I think we've got a chance.

0:24:21 > 0:24:23I was quite happy with what we sold.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25Well, I've been watching both teams

0:24:25 > 0:24:27throughout the buying and selling process

0:24:27 > 0:24:29and these are my observations.

0:24:29 > 0:24:33Impulse, you bought some really good stock.

0:24:33 > 0:24:35When you were buying your stock,

0:24:35 > 0:24:39I was concerned that you weren't haggling enough with Kate.

0:24:39 > 0:24:453 Profiteers, you spent your money across lots of different categories

0:24:45 > 0:24:47and I was a little bit concerned about that,

0:24:47 > 0:24:49because I thought you weren't focussing

0:24:49 > 0:24:53on thinking about who would be there at the event,

0:24:53 > 0:24:55and who your target market would be.

0:24:55 > 0:25:00The team that makes the most money wins the challenge

0:25:00 > 0:25:03and has a shot at one of our semifinals.

0:25:03 > 0:25:08Win that and you'll be in our Grand Final,

0:25:08 > 0:25:09trading in New York.

0:25:09 > 0:25:11So, who has won the challenge?

0:25:15 > 0:25:173 Profiteers...

0:25:21 > 0:25:25£98.05

0:25:27 > 0:25:32Impulse, you took...

0:25:36 > 0:25:39..£98 and...

0:25:44 > 0:25:45..15p.

0:25:49 > 0:25:54'So, Impulse look shocked. No wonder - they've just won by 10p.

0:25:54 > 0:25:56'Such a close result.'

0:25:56 > 0:26:00Wow! That was a close one.

0:26:00 > 0:26:05- Well done. I thought you would have won.- Well done.- So close!

0:26:07 > 0:26:08Ten pennies!

0:26:09 > 0:26:15Guys, high five, cos that is a winning result! Well done.

0:26:15 > 0:26:19Henry, is there anything you could have done better?

0:26:19 > 0:26:21I think if we raised our prices a tiny bit,

0:26:21 > 0:26:24but on hindsight, you do think like that if you lost.

0:26:30 > 0:26:35From their £75 trade fund, Impulse took £98.15.

0:26:35 > 0:26:37That's a £23.15 profit.

0:26:39 > 0:26:42Let's look at the leaderboard.

0:26:42 > 0:26:45Impulse are now in first place, in front of the OAPs.

0:26:45 > 0:26:49Remember, only the four winning teams who take the most money

0:26:49 > 0:26:51get through to the semifinals.

0:26:51 > 0:26:55The two best will go on to compete in the grand New York final.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00Trade Your Way To The USA!

0:27:01 > 0:27:05But only one team will be named Britain's best young traders.

0:27:07 > 0:27:10Next time on Trade Your Way To The USA

0:27:10 > 0:27:11there's fruit to be picked...

0:27:11 > 0:27:13Really nice.

0:27:13 > 0:27:15..and haggling to be done...

0:27:15 > 0:27:17- £1.- £1. £1.50?

0:27:17 > 0:27:22..as two teams of traders battle it out at a busy farmer's market.
