0:00:02 > 0:00:05- I'm Imogen.- And I'm Amelia. - BOTH: And we're identical twins.

0:00:05 > 0:00:07And we're 11 years old.

0:00:08 > 0:00:12This summer, we're competing at the National Dwarf Games,

0:00:12 > 0:00:17the UK's biggest sporting event for little people.

0:00:17 > 0:00:21And today, we're competing for the medals at the discus.

0:00:25 > 0:00:30Our next event is throwing something called "a discus."

0:00:30 > 0:00:32'So, we haven't really been throwing much, have we?'

0:00:32 > 0:00:34'No, especially the discus.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38'We're not entirely sure what a discus is.

0:00:38 > 0:00:43'It must be kind of similar to a rugby ball, right?'

0:00:43 > 0:00:45That failed.

0:00:45 > 0:00:46THEY LAUGH

0:00:46 > 0:00:50- What are you doing? - Throwing the discus?

0:00:50 > 0:00:54- Have you ever seen someone throw a discus before?- Yeah, like this.

0:00:55 > 0:00:59- No, that's the javelin. - BOTH: Oh.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02I think you girls are going to need a lot of help with this one.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04I think Riley's right.

0:01:04 > 0:01:09Maybe it would help if we actually found out what a discus is.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16We are here at Loughborough University.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19- To meet Disco Dan! - No, Amelia.

0:01:19 > 0:01:25- It's Discus Dan!- OH! - Look over there. There's Dan.- Oh!

0:01:25 > 0:01:29- So, THAT's what a discus looks like. - How does he throw that far?

0:01:29 > 0:01:33There's only one way to find out. Let's go meet him.

0:01:33 > 0:01:38Discus, not Disco, Dan, is a Paralympic gold medallist.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42He knows that to throw the discus, it's all about using the

0:01:42 > 0:01:46right technique so he's just the man to show us how it's done.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48How can I help you out?

0:01:48 > 0:01:51We're competing in discus but I don't think we're good enough yet.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54Yeah, we need some tips on our technique. Reckon you can help?

0:01:54 > 0:01:56Why don't you come and have a throw

0:01:56 > 0:01:58and I'll see where I can help you out?

0:01:58 > 0:02:01'Go on, then, Imogen. Show us how it's done.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04'OK, how difficult can it be?'

0:02:05 > 0:02:08'Oh. That's not right.'

0:02:08 > 0:02:10'OK, you have a go then.'

0:02:14 > 0:02:16I don't think it's like that either.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19BOTH: We clearly need some help.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22Well, girls, that was a start. I'm just going to give you a few

0:02:22 > 0:02:24tips on how to improve your throw, OK?

0:02:24 > 0:02:28So, first of all, we're going to try and fit our fingers just over

0:02:28 > 0:02:29the edge of the discus.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32That means that when we throw it we can flick it up with the

0:02:32 > 0:02:35fingers and it'll stay nice and flat.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38Second one is to keep your right arm really high.

0:02:38 > 0:02:40We'll be able to get a lot bigger pull and it will be

0:02:40 > 0:02:43a more powerful throw. OK, let's give it a go.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50Wicked. Put your weight under your right leg, that's it.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55- Awesome.- It's very satisfying, throwing the discus.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59- I feel quite impressed with myself. - That was really good.

0:03:03 > 0:03:05Keep your arm up and a nice, big, long pull.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09Yeah, we've got it now. Come on, Imogen.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13Wow. That's a big improvement.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15I thought a huge improvement.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18Because at the beginning I wasn't even throwing it in the

0:03:18 > 0:03:21correct way. Then, it was actually pretty cool

0:03:21 > 0:03:23to actually throw it like that.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26'I think we've got the technique down.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28'But, to be good, we have to be

0:03:28 > 0:03:31'super-strong to throw it really far.'

0:03:32 > 0:03:36We've come to the home of British Gymnastics...

0:03:36 > 0:03:39to meet superstar gymnast Kristian Thomas.

0:03:39 > 0:03:44- Kristian has won gold for Team GB... - at the Commonwealth Games.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47He's got some serious muscles.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50So, you guys would like a bit of help with your upper body strength?

0:03:50 > 0:03:52Yeah, we need to be as fit and strong as possible.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54I've got a few exercises that I think could help

0:03:54 > 0:03:56- Shall we give them a try? - BOTH: Yeah.

0:03:56 > 0:03:57So I was thinking, girls,

0:03:57 > 0:03:59that maybe we could have a go on these rings.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02I'll give you a quick demonstration from the bottom,

0:04:02 > 0:04:03all the way up to the top.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05- Wow! - That is amazing!

0:04:05 > 0:04:07The great thing about the rings is that it uses all

0:04:07 > 0:04:10the upper body strength. You've got the biceps, the triceps,

0:04:10 > 0:04:13the shoulder muscles, the deltoids, so it's absolutely

0:04:13 > 0:04:16brilliant exercise in helping with the discus throw.

0:04:16 > 0:04:20'Oh, my gosh, he's not expecting us to do THAT, is he?

0:04:20 > 0:04:22'It's so high!'

0:04:23 > 0:04:26All right, then, girls, who's going to go first?

0:04:26 > 0:04:29- You.- Amelia, shut up.- You.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32- No, you.- You.- You. - There's only one way to settle this.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34BOTH: Rock, paper, scissors.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37Ha! Boom. You have to go first.

0:04:37 > 0:04:42- And hang onto the rings. How many are we going for?- Three?

0:04:42 > 0:04:48Three, let's go. One, two, three.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50Because of our height, we're physically not as

0:04:50 > 0:04:53strong as other people because, obviously, we're smaller.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56Kristian gave me great advice.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58I do feel more able to throw the discus, now.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01And I know that Kristian wants us to be training

0:05:01 > 0:05:05harder but there's just too much fun stuff to do here!

0:05:10 > 0:05:13Kristian gave us a training programme which we'll try to

0:05:13 > 0:05:18stick to but it's hard to keep to going because we get bored.

0:05:18 > 0:05:22If we want to do well, we're going to have to work on our

0:05:22 > 0:05:25mental stuff as well as our physical strength.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33- We've been practising our strength for discus.- But what we really

0:05:33 > 0:05:36need help with is our mental strength.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39So, we asked Bobby Lockwood for help.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42He told us to meet here with our helmets.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44We have no idea what's in store.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46BOTH: Let's go!

0:05:46 > 0:05:50Bobby Lockwood plays Rhydian in Wolfblood.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53But after his success in the London Marathon,

0:05:53 > 0:05:56we think he's a perfect person to help us out.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58- Hi, Bobby.- Hello.- Hello!

0:05:58 > 0:06:00So, why have we brought our helmets?

0:06:00 > 0:06:02Well, I thought it would be quite

0:06:02 > 0:06:05fun if I gave you two a bit of a challenge.

0:06:05 > 0:06:09And I'm not going to lie, it is quite scary.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11You're going to have to be mentally strong

0:06:11 > 0:06:12to want to get over it and do it.

0:06:12 > 0:06:16What we're going to be doing today is a little bit of a leap of faith.

0:06:18 > 0:06:23Bobby wants us to swing across this three-metre drop.

0:06:23 > 0:06:28- That's three times taller than we are.- We really don't want to do it.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31The thing is, it's going to be all the more fun because you're

0:06:31 > 0:06:32a little bit scared.

0:06:32 > 0:06:34And the more scared you are, the better it's going to feel.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37'But it doesn't feel fun right now.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43'The rest of our family are trying to convince us to do it.'

0:06:43 > 0:06:48No offence, Riley, but I don't trust you at all.

0:06:48 > 0:06:52'When you're as small as us, trust me, this is huge.'

0:06:52 > 0:06:57'Finally, Amelia is braver than me and steps up to give it a go.'

0:06:57 > 0:07:00You're taking that leap of faith.

0:07:00 > 0:07:01One, two, three.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05Took the leap of faith. Look at that!

0:07:05 > 0:07:07APPLAUSE

0:07:07 > 0:07:09Well done!

0:07:10 > 0:07:15- Five!- 'That was really scary, but come on, Imogen. You can do it.'

0:07:15 > 0:07:17- One, two, three, go! - APPLAUSE

0:07:27 > 0:07:30Girls, first off, high fives. That was awesome.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32Was it easier once you saw your sister do it?

0:07:32 > 0:07:35- Did you think oh, I can do that? - A bit, yeah.- A bit.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39I'm proud of you, you proud of yourselves? Proud of each other?

0:07:39 > 0:07:42There you go. And that's the thing, you have each other to, you know,

0:07:42 > 0:07:44you can help each other as you go along.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48- That was so awesome, aren't you glad we did it?- Yeah. It was scary.

0:07:48 > 0:07:53- But wasn't Bobby really nice? - Yeah, he's so dreamy.

0:07:56 > 0:08:00We finally arrived at the National Dwarf Games.

0:08:00 > 0:08:04But one thing we haven't trained for is this horrible weather

0:08:04 > 0:08:06as we prepare for the discus.

0:08:06 > 0:08:10It was quite cold, so it was hard to, like, just think about that one

0:08:10 > 0:08:13thing because there was loads of distractions.

0:08:13 > 0:08:17I was just really hoping I beat my personal best.

0:08:22 > 0:08:26'We all get three throws with the person who throws the

0:08:26 > 0:08:29'furthest getting the gold medal.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31'And I'm up first.'

0:08:32 > 0:08:34Come on, Amelia!

0:08:37 > 0:08:38Well done!

0:08:40 > 0:08:44I felt, like, kind of determined and I tried to, like, try my best.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46Come on, Imogen.

0:08:50 > 0:08:54'That wasn't too bad for our first throw but it's going to take

0:08:54 > 0:08:56'more to beat our rivals.'

0:09:02 > 0:09:06'The competition is fierce as we get to our final throw.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18'That last one was definitely our best,

0:09:18 > 0:09:22'but was it good enough to get either of us a medal?'

0:09:22 > 0:09:24My first throw wasn't that good

0:09:24 > 0:09:26but then my last throw felt really good.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31I was actually really proud of myself because it was

0:09:31 > 0:09:35actually quite tough because there was a lot of people we were against.

0:09:38 > 0:09:40'Yes! Amelia got bronze.'

0:09:40 > 0:09:43'And Professor Flitwick presented it to me.'

0:09:43 > 0:09:46'Amelia, his real name is Warwick Davis.'

0:09:46 > 0:09:47'I know!'

0:09:47 > 0:09:49I'm actually really proud of myself.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52I was just really happy to actually win a medal.

0:09:52 > 0:09:54I got a bronze medal.

0:09:54 > 0:09:58- I'm going to catch up to you soon. - No you're not.- Yeah, I am.- Not.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00Yeah, I am....
