0:01:07 > 0:01:12We'll be going behind closed doors to see City's VIP People

0:01:12 > 0:01:16producing the next batch of Premier League Champions.

0:01:16 > 0:01:20Tucked in to the side streets behind Manchester's Curry Mile,

0:01:20 > 0:01:23Man City's academy started up in 1998

0:01:23 > 0:01:27with the goal of finding and training players of the future.

0:01:31 > 0:01:36Here, a select band of boys between the ages of eight and eighteen

0:01:36 > 0:01:40are taught how to play footie - the City way.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42You've got to be better without the ball.

0:01:42 > 0:01:45And now Man City are Premier League Champions,

0:01:45 > 0:01:49there's a new standard to aim for.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52To win, to win it again, and win it again.

0:01:52 > 0:01:57About to dive into this mix will be Manchester lad Billy O'Brien.

0:01:57 > 0:02:01We'll be following the efforts of Billy and his VIP People

0:02:01 > 0:02:04as he tries to make it as a goalie at Man City.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11Billy's battle to make it at Manchester City has only just begun.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15As well as hard graft, he'll need the help of all his VIP People

0:02:15 > 0:02:18from the goal-keeping coach,

0:02:18 > 0:02:21performance analysis and sports science teams,

0:02:21 > 0:02:24to his team-mates, and even the Man City driver.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28It's only with the 100% support of all these guys

0:02:28 > 0:02:32that he can hope to succeed at the Premiership Champions.

0:02:32 > 0:02:36Billy's long term goal is to be City's first-team keeper.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39If I want to be on that bus, I just have to work my hardest,

0:02:39 > 0:02:41and hope I get my chance and take it, really.

0:02:41 > 0:02:45First he has to become first pick in the under-18 team.

0:02:45 > 0:02:49But there are other goalies fighting for the same spot

0:02:49 > 0:02:51THEY ARGUE

0:02:53 > 0:02:57But Billy's got heart, he's got spirit.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Will that be enough to win a place in the team

0:03:00 > 0:03:05and maybe one day to lift this trophy as a winner?

0:03:08 > 0:03:11I hope to be there one day.

0:03:17 > 0:03:2116-year-old Manchester lad Billy O'Brien

0:03:21 > 0:03:23has just finished his last GCSE.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25'I'm finally leaving school.'

0:03:25 > 0:03:28I can now do what I want to do, and not what I HAVE to do.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31He's walking home from school for the last time.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34- All right, Ma?- All right, baby.

0:03:34 > 0:03:38Billy's ma has been supporting his dream since City's talent scouts

0:03:38 > 0:03:43discovered him playing footy in his own backyard.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45That's where the local team would play, Billy's team.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49It was there he was playing when he was spotted by the City scout.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56A scout is someone who finds good football players for the club.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59And that's just one of the jobs, Billy Hughes,

0:03:59 > 0:04:03the first of City's VIP People does for the academy.

0:04:03 > 0:04:04He ain't no good!

0:04:08 > 0:04:12Billy's employed by Man City to ferry the football players around,

0:04:12 > 0:04:16but he also spots new talent and without the likes of Billy Hughes,

0:04:16 > 0:04:20OUR Billy might never have set foot in the academy.

0:04:21 > 0:04:26A keen footballer himself, Billy works with local youth groups

0:04:26 > 0:04:31and has developed an ability to spot boys with the skills City want.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34You're right, I'm not just a driver!

0:04:34 > 0:04:38I know what I'm talking about and what I'm looking for, for the club.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40They're going to start at the top

0:04:40 > 0:04:43so we've got to do the groundwork, grassroots level.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47But now City are champions, his job just got a lot harder.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52Instead of looking for quantity, we're looking for quality.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55We've got to try and produce talented players

0:04:55 > 0:04:58where you're not spending money going abroad all be time.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00But today he's got his driving hat on

0:05:00 > 0:05:03and Billy drops OUR Billy off for training.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06There's about 140 boys training at the academy.

0:05:06 > 0:05:10It looks decent. Look around the place.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12All right? This is our kit room.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17Like many boys, Billy joined when he was eight.

0:05:17 > 0:05:18This is our gym.

0:05:18 > 0:05:22Where others have been let go, Billy survived and is now just

0:05:22 > 0:05:24two squads below the first team.

0:05:26 > 0:05:30This is Billy's last training session as a schoolboy.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33Just roll it next to this. Billy, you're in first. Show time!

0:05:33 > 0:05:35He'll be training with the next of our VIP People -

0:05:35 > 0:05:39lead goal-keeping coach, Roy Tunks.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42Roy looks after and oversees all of the under-18s keepers

0:05:42 > 0:05:45on City's books, including Billy, and he's helped him

0:05:45 > 0:05:49to progress from schoolboy level and into the under-18s team.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52What Roy says goes.

0:05:52 > 0:05:57Roy played around 800 league and cup games in a 24-year playing career.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59As a coach he's trained Premiership keepers,

0:05:59 > 0:06:02Tim Flowers, Brad Friedel, and Shay Given.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05It's a wonderful, wonderful life. I've been lucky.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07I've done nothing since I left school

0:06:07 > 0:06:11except be involved in football and I recommend everyone,

0:06:11 > 0:06:15if they've got the opportunity, to have a real good go at it.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19He's been at City for 18 months, training 50 to 60 players,

0:06:19 > 0:06:23but the challenge for Roy is turning schoolboys like Billy

0:06:23 > 0:06:27into keepers who meet the club's ever-increasing standards.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31You've got to pitch at a level that they will see success with.

0:06:31 > 0:06:36The idea is to move your hand so you hit the right angle all the time.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38And they have to see that you're pleased with them,

0:06:38 > 0:06:40but they also have to recognise when you're not.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43Go! Good. Take that new angle, Bill.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45We set them challenges at early ages

0:06:45 > 0:06:47to be the best goalkeeper in that session.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50Just drop back for me. Good.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53Let him get there and settle.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55That's good, Billy. That's it.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58That's a great save, by the way.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00Roy seems pleased with Billy's focus.

0:07:00 > 0:07:04Don't let yourself down now. It could be the 89th minute.

0:07:04 > 0:07:08But when Billy gets annoyed at himself for missing a save...

0:07:08 > 0:07:13- Language!- ..Roy has to use his experience to calm him down.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15You're all right, you'll live.

0:07:15 > 0:07:19The ball smashed me right in the face so I got a bit frustrated.

0:07:19 > 0:07:23It's important for Billy's career that he improves his composure...

0:07:23 > 0:07:26Good attitude, well done.

0:07:26 > 0:07:29..but its also important for Roy's career that HE improves Billy.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32What I liked about that is you got straight back onto it.

0:07:32 > 0:07:36Billy needs to improve in every department to get to the next stage.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39The next stage that he's looking to play at, every department

0:07:39 > 0:07:42that he's working on at the moment is better than his.

0:07:42 > 0:07:46To help Billy improve, Roy takes him to see the technology wiz kids

0:07:46 > 0:07:49in City's Performance Analysis department.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53This is our room. These are the cameras we use to film the games.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55That's good.

0:07:55 > 0:08:00Aaron and Andy are in a team who film all the academy team matches

0:08:00 > 0:08:04and by studying this footage, both the outfield players,

0:08:04 > 0:08:07Billy, and the other goalkeepers are able to improve their performances.

0:08:07 > 0:08:11Aaron and Andy studied sports coaching at uni

0:08:11 > 0:08:14where they discovered the hi-tech world of performance analysis.

0:08:14 > 0:08:19They use their knowledge to keep records of every time

0:08:19 > 0:08:22any player touches the ball.

0:08:22 > 0:08:25When Billy kicks a ball out, we press G and that goes into a video.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27Every time he tries to save the ball,

0:08:27 > 0:08:30we press H and that goes into another video.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32These records are then turned into

0:08:32 > 0:08:35Billy's personal compilation of his match performance.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38Seeing yourself is one of the main ways of learning

0:08:38 > 0:08:41so we speed up their learning process, hopefully,

0:08:41 > 0:08:44- to become a better footballer quicker.- Give me two options.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46Yes, there's one. Yes.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50So you just throw the ball over.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52The thing I love about my job

0:08:52 > 0:08:55is when you work with a player one-on-one

0:08:55 > 0:08:58and you can see the player that you picked up six weeks ago

0:08:58 > 0:09:01and through the coaching and the different departments,

0:09:01 > 0:09:04they do become better as a player and a person.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08It's the start of the new season.

0:09:08 > 0:09:12And in order to be closer to training and his team-mates

0:09:12 > 0:09:16Billy's moving out Mum's house and across Manchester into club digs.

0:09:16 > 0:09:20There's just enough time to give his mum an internet lesson.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23- What's the Skype logo? - It's just an S in blue.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26It won't be the same, not having him here.

0:09:26 > 0:09:30The City boys are here to take my son away!

0:09:30 > 0:09:32It's time to say goodbye.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46Billy! Be good.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49# You turned out the lights now I'm paralysed

0:09:49 > 0:09:53# Still stuck in that time when we called it love. #

0:09:55 > 0:09:58- Left at the landing. - As Billy moves into his new digs

0:09:58 > 0:10:01with Man City house parent Paul Priest,

0:10:01 > 0:10:04he comes face-to-face with his first challenge.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07I've been told it's a shoe thing, but I do not...

0:10:07 > 0:10:11I don't know why you do this. Is that right?

0:10:11 > 0:10:12Paul is a mad City fan

0:10:12 > 0:10:16who's been on the club's payroll as a house parent for 11 years.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19He's helped many lads get to grips with the shoe thing,

0:10:19 > 0:10:22including first-team player Micah Richards.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25Micah was with us for nearly five years. He came as a 14-year-old.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27I've lived the dream with Micah.

0:10:27 > 0:10:32My sons say, "Is Micah still your favourite?"

0:10:32 > 0:10:34Obviously.

0:10:36 > 0:10:38Oh, now we're talking.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40I think that's right.

0:10:43 > 0:10:44Billy, are you up?

0:10:44 > 0:10:46Four weeks after leaving school,

0:10:46 > 0:10:50Billy's starting as a full-time goalie.

0:10:50 > 0:10:51To get him in the mood,

0:10:51 > 0:10:54Paul re-enacts City's league-winning moment.

0:10:54 > 0:10:58- Aguero-o-o-o! - BILLY LAUGHS

0:10:58 > 0:11:02- It's the last-minute goal we scored against...- Won the League.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04When we won the League. Bigging it up.

0:11:06 > 0:11:10Everyone's buzzing to be back full-time at the academy.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13It's time to catch up with old friends...

0:11:13 > 0:11:17- Here he is, here he is! - ..and for rivalries to renew.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20Every time he's around, every time he's sat in the background.

0:11:20 > 0:11:21Welcome to the gym.

0:11:22 > 0:11:26City recently bought goalkeeper Angus Gunn from Norwich

0:11:26 > 0:11:29- for a quarter of a million pounds. - The worst guy at the club.

0:11:29 > 0:11:34While Gunny and keepers like him are Billy's team-mates,

0:11:34 > 0:11:37they're all battling for just one spot, and it's this positive rivalry

0:11:37 > 0:11:40that keeps them all at the top of their game.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42Come on! Let's go! Come on.

0:11:42 > 0:11:46To reach his goal of being first-pick keeper,

0:11:46 > 0:11:49- Billy will have to overtake Angus. - I want you to push him.

0:11:49 > 0:11:53I want you to keep checking over your shoulder that he's behind me.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56Billy was fully aware that a club like Manchester City

0:11:56 > 0:11:58were always looking to improve.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02And the club went out and acquired Angus Gunn.

0:12:02 > 0:12:06Billy has risen to the challenge, he's accepted the challenge.

0:12:06 > 0:12:08You love me really.

0:12:08 > 0:12:10- Nah.- You do!

0:12:16 > 0:12:19Come on, Bill! You're late, mate.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22Billy, you should be ready.

0:12:23 > 0:12:27For the next few days, Billy's time is split between Roy

0:12:27 > 0:12:29and the next of our VIP people,

0:12:29 > 0:12:32Al Stewart from the Sport Science Team.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36Working closely with all the back-room staff,

0:12:36 > 0:12:39including goal-keeping coach Roy, Al works with colleagues

0:12:39 > 0:12:41Nathan and Matt from Sport Science

0:12:41 > 0:12:44to assess and improve the fitness of all the players,

0:12:44 > 0:12:46including goalies like Billy.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50Three, two, one. Jump.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52Come on!

0:12:52 > 0:12:55Well done.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57To work in the Sport Science department here,

0:12:57 > 0:12:59you need to have a passion for it.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02You need to really care about improving people's performance.

0:13:02 > 0:13:04Don't let your knees touch my hand.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07'Through that, you have to study to the level'

0:13:07 > 0:13:09that you understand how the body works.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11Lunge, twist, haunch stretch.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15It's the job of Matt, Nathan and Al

0:13:15 > 0:13:18to make Billy move quicker and jump higher.

0:13:18 > 0:13:20Come on, quicker. Quicker in-between.

0:13:20 > 0:13:24One way to do this is by controlling Billy's diet.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26- It's too hard. - Billy needs to lose his body fat.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29As a keeper, he needs to reduce that unnecessary weight.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32It's going to mean he can't jump as high, move as fast.

0:13:32 > 0:13:37Al even organises cooking demos with TV chef Simon Rimmer

0:13:37 > 0:13:40so house parents feed their kids healthy grub.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43What they take into their body massively affects their performance

0:13:43 > 0:13:46and this is really a way of showing them, "You know what?

0:13:46 > 0:13:48"It doesn't have to be difficult."

0:13:48 > 0:13:51If Al and his team can't keep the boys off the sweets and burgers,

0:13:51 > 0:13:54the academy could fail in its goal of producing players

0:13:54 > 0:13:57who can win the Premier League.

0:13:57 > 0:14:01Pretty soon, Roy will be telling team coaches

0:14:01 > 0:14:03which keepers are in form.

0:14:03 > 0:14:07With Billy's rivals Liam and Angus showing solid form,

0:14:07 > 0:14:11it's time for Bill to come up with something special.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16Just get that timing right.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19In this session, Roy wants to see clean handling under pressure.

0:14:19 > 0:14:21We call it one touch, so it's...

0:14:21 > 0:14:25That's all we can hear. But sometimes you can hear a...

0:14:25 > 0:14:28It's bouncing around a bit. That's when the timing's off a little.

0:14:28 > 0:14:32Let's go, Bill. Nice and clean with every one, if you can.

0:14:32 > 0:14:34That's a good start.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36Now he's gone! He's set the standard. Can he keep it up?

0:14:36 > 0:14:40He's going to have a good go! Well done. He's going for a full house.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42Come on!

0:14:42 > 0:14:43Can he get the full house?

0:14:43 > 0:14:45Yes, he can so far.

0:14:46 > 0:14:48Yes! Come on, let's go.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53Come on, last one! Is he going to get it?

0:14:53 > 0:14:55Yes!

0:14:56 > 0:15:00It's a massive display from Billy in front of all his rivals.

0:15:01 > 0:15:05But as Billy leaves, Roy sets him another challenge.

0:15:05 > 0:15:09Take it out there. Don't leave it in here. Take it to the arena.

0:15:10 > 0:15:15So here's the story so far. Lifelong Man City fan Billy O'Brien

0:15:15 > 0:15:19wants to be first-pick goalie in Man City's under-18 team,

0:15:19 > 0:15:22but so do his rivals Liam and Angus.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25City's Sport Science Team are busy keeping Bill fit,

0:15:25 > 0:15:28the Performance Analysis Team are improving his awareness,

0:15:28 > 0:15:30and coach Roy is pushing him in training.

0:19:07 > 0:19:09Out, out, out, out, out...

0:19:35 > 0:19:39Billy draws on his memories of that time to stay focused on his goal.

0:19:41 > 0:19:45'Now I know what it feels like to nearly get a no,

0:19:45 > 0:19:47and that's too much itself to handle.

0:19:47 > 0:19:52It does make you want to work harder and do everything you do perfectly.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56With pre-season matches due to start,

0:19:56 > 0:19:59can Billy pick himself up and do enough to get picked?

0:20:02 > 0:20:06The Sports Science Team are Matt, Al and Nathan

0:20:06 > 0:20:08and another of their key aims

0:20:08 > 0:20:11is to help players like Billy avoid injuries.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16They do this by controlling how hard players train.

0:20:16 > 0:20:20You'll see all the players wearing this. It's got one of these in it.

0:20:20 > 0:20:25Head of Sport Science Matt Cooke uses global positioning satellites

0:20:25 > 0:20:27to keep records of every move the players make.

0:20:27 > 0:20:31For every time you move, this records it.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33Get up!

0:20:33 > 0:20:36As Roy pushes Billy to work harder,

0:20:36 > 0:20:40every jump, every impact, every step Billy takes

0:20:40 > 0:20:44is beamed up to a satellite in the sky, and back to Matt's office.

0:20:45 > 0:20:48Just got the results up of the GPS vest Billy was wearing.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51- Let's go!- We've nearly three miles, which is a lot for a goalkeeper.

0:20:51 > 0:20:55I spoke to Roy this morning. He took that information

0:20:55 > 0:20:57and said today's session has to be a lot lighter.

0:20:57 > 0:20:59For Billy, a lighter training session

0:20:59 > 0:21:02means a visit to Matt's colleague Al...

0:21:02 > 0:21:04Quick as we can, quick as we can.

0:21:04 > 0:21:08..who wants to analyse the way Billy jumps.

0:21:08 > 0:21:11- Hiding?- Al.- Jump test, Bill.

0:21:11 > 0:21:13As the players line up and jump...

0:21:17 > 0:21:19..Al records the jumps

0:21:19 > 0:21:22using a camera that plays back in slow motion.

0:21:22 > 0:21:27What we're looking at is a counter-movement jump.

0:21:27 > 0:21:29When Al watches the jumps back,

0:21:29 > 0:21:32he can spot tiny things that Billy needs to work on.

0:21:32 > 0:21:35As he drops down into the squat here,

0:21:35 > 0:21:37we'll see, you'll notice round about now,

0:21:37 > 0:21:40there is a little rolling of both his knees just there.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43The problem with the knees rolling in is it's a lack of strength

0:21:43 > 0:21:46through his backside muscles, his glutes, we call them.

0:21:46 > 0:21:48A couple of things happened.

0:21:48 > 0:21:50One, he can't produce enough force to jump high

0:21:50 > 0:21:53and two, it just increases risk of injury.

0:21:53 > 0:21:57This is something Bill has to work really hard on as a goalkeeper

0:21:57 > 0:21:59if he wants to make it.

0:21:59 > 0:22:01With the clock ticking to team selection,

0:22:01 > 0:22:04Al's discovery about Billy's glutes

0:22:04 > 0:22:08is passed on to his colleague Nathan Bullock...

0:22:08 > 0:22:10- Nathan!- Afternoon, Billy.

0:22:10 > 0:22:12..who designs an exercise to help Billy jump higher.

0:22:12 > 0:22:17So this exercise here is going to work on glutes.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20It works the muscle as it lengthens out.

0:22:20 > 0:22:23Oof! Looks painful, doesn't it?

0:22:23 > 0:22:25Good. That's it. That's loads better.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28If this isn't hard enough,

0:22:28 > 0:22:30Nathan reminds Billy he's got to do his chin-ups.

0:22:30 > 0:22:34No pressure. How many do you reckon you could do? How many sets?

0:22:34 > 0:22:37- Three. Definitely three. - All on your own?

0:22:37 > 0:22:40Joe Hart would be able to do four sets.

0:22:40 > 0:22:43No pressure, then, Bill. Let's see what you've got.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48- One set.- Time to go again.

0:22:48 > 0:22:49Two sets.

0:22:52 > 0:22:54Under pressure.

0:22:54 > 0:22:55Three sets.

0:22:56 > 0:22:59Are you watching, Joe Hart?

0:22:59 > 0:23:02- This is the sound that he dreads. - WATCH BEEPS

0:23:02 > 0:23:05- Come on, Bill. Final set! - Arms straight.

0:23:07 > 0:23:08Three and a half...

0:23:08 > 0:23:10Any advance on three and a half?

0:23:13 > 0:23:15Come on. Come on.

0:23:17 > 0:23:19Ooh! Three and a half sets.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22That's it, Bill. You're not getting picked.

0:23:57 > 0:23:59bounce back from them

0:23:59 > 0:24:02and now he's on the verge of breaking into one of our teams.

0:24:02 > 0:24:05Colwyn Bay play five divisions down from the Premiership

0:24:05 > 0:24:08in the Northern Conference League,

0:24:08 > 0:24:10but their team of grown men includes some tough players

0:24:10 > 0:24:13and former Premiership stars.

0:24:16 > 0:24:21Colwyn Bay will want to give their fans something to cheer about.

0:24:21 > 0:24:24To win here, Billy and the under-18s

0:25:06 > 0:25:11Billy's expecting the hairdryer treatment at half time,
