0:07:50 > 0:07:57.
0:08:03 > 0:08:08So, my TBR co-star Daniel has been out for another Weekend Download.
0:08:08 > 0:08:12Now, he's trying to catch the perfect wind. Confused?
0:08:12 > 0:08:16Hm, I am. Let's take a look at this.
0:08:16 > 0:08:20Hey, I'm Danny, and this week I've hit the coast for Weekend Download.
0:08:20 > 0:08:24And today I'm going to be flying a kite, but not just any kite.
0:08:36 > 0:08:38I'm George Dufty, I'm 15 years old
0:08:38 > 0:08:42and I'm one of the UK's best youth kite surfers.
0:08:42 > 0:08:44I've been kite surfing for about two and a half years
0:08:44 > 0:08:46and I've been kiting for about three.
0:08:46 > 0:08:49There's loads of reasons why I love kite surfing.
0:08:49 > 0:08:52It's the combination of a lot of my favourite sports,
0:08:52 > 0:08:54like surfing, kite flying,
0:08:54 > 0:08:57skateboarding... And plus you can get really big air,
0:08:57 > 0:08:59and that's one of the best things about it.
0:09:03 > 0:09:05- Hi, George, nice to meet you, I'm Danny.- Hi, Danny.
0:09:05 > 0:09:07So, you're a bit of a kiting expert, yeah?
0:09:07 > 0:09:11Yeah, I'm currently set as second in the Under 19 British Championships.
0:09:11 > 0:09:12That's pretty cool.
0:09:12 > 0:09:15So, that looked pretty dangerous with that big kite.
0:09:15 > 0:09:18- Am I going to be flying about like that?- Not necessarily.
0:09:18 > 0:09:20First of all, we're going to work on a trainer kite,
0:09:20 > 0:09:21which is a much smaller version,
0:09:21 > 0:09:25to get you used to how to fly the kite and where the power is.
0:09:25 > 0:09:27So then, eventually, you can move onto that.
0:09:27 > 0:09:29So, we'll go and get suited then.
0:09:29 > 0:09:30- Yeah.- All right then.
0:09:33 > 0:09:36- Right, talk me through it then. - Well, this is your trainer kite.
0:09:36 > 0:09:40This is a two-metre compared to the nine that we had over there.
0:09:40 > 0:09:43First of all, we've got to lay it out flat, downwind.
0:09:43 > 0:09:45There upwind, that's where the wind is coming from.
0:09:45 > 0:09:46Here's downwind.
0:09:48 > 0:09:50Like this.
0:09:50 > 0:09:52- OK, so...- OK, there we go.
0:09:52 > 0:09:55Here you have got the bridles, which is this bit and this bit,
0:09:55 > 0:09:57which are attached to the kite.
0:09:57 > 0:10:00Now, we'll put it on the ground and then we can lay the lines.
0:10:00 > 0:10:03OK, you need to lay the kite down,
0:10:03 > 0:10:04otherwise it is going to blow away.
0:10:04 > 0:10:07Just grab something heavy, like a shoe.
0:10:07 > 0:10:10You're going to use your shoe, OK.
0:10:10 > 0:10:12Right, let's get the bar.
0:10:12 > 0:10:14You're going to lay the lines upwind of the kite,
0:10:14 > 0:10:16so we just unwind them like this.
0:10:16 > 0:10:17Go on then.
0:10:22 > 0:10:25So, we are ready to launch now. I'm going to hold the kite like this...
0:10:25 > 0:10:28- OK.- ..to get the air in the kite. You run down there and grab the bar.
0:10:28 > 0:10:29OK.
0:10:31 > 0:10:34Step back and pull into your hip.
0:10:34 > 0:10:36- Like that?- Hey!
0:10:40 > 0:10:42All around the side, you've got the least power.
0:10:42 > 0:10:44If you keep it at 12 o'clock,
0:10:44 > 0:10:46it's in a stable position, you should be fine there.
0:10:46 > 0:10:48- OK.- That's really cool.
0:10:50 > 0:10:53Right, so now I've got this relatively down.
0:10:53 > 0:10:56I want to know how to turn, so are you going to show me how to do this?
0:10:56 > 0:11:00- Yeah. So, instead of like a car, which steers like this...- Right.
0:11:00 > 0:11:03..you want to be pulling left and right. So, you pull with your right
0:11:03 > 0:11:07to go right. And to go left, you pull with your left.
0:11:07 > 0:11:09So, really push and pull.
0:11:10 > 0:11:11You can do it without looking.
0:11:11 > 0:11:13It's a skill you need to put the board on your feet.
0:11:13 > 0:11:16So, you got one hand and then you got to put the board on.
0:11:16 > 0:11:17The winds are a lot lighter now.
0:11:17 > 0:11:20If you try to bring up from 12 over to like three.
0:11:20 > 0:11:23- OK.- All right, that's it.
0:11:23 > 0:11:26There you go, that's good. And now to the left. That's it.
0:11:26 > 0:11:29So, you can bring it over to nine over there.
0:11:29 > 0:11:32That's it, that's really cool. And then back over to three.
0:11:36 > 0:11:40If you are looking into getting into any kite sport, best thing
0:11:40 > 0:11:41to do is to buy a small kite.
0:11:41 > 0:11:44Between one or two metres would be really good.
0:11:44 > 0:11:45And with a bar is even better.
0:11:45 > 0:11:48You don't need that much wind to learn to kite,
0:11:48 > 0:11:50but a windy day always helps.
0:11:50 > 0:11:52Giving kiting a go couldn't be easier.
0:11:54 > 0:11:57Get yourself a stunt kite for as little as ten pounds
0:11:57 > 0:11:59and get down to your nearest park to try it out.
0:11:59 > 0:12:01Set it up following its instructions.
0:12:01 > 0:12:03Grip the handles or bar to take off.
0:12:03 > 0:12:05Or you can get a friend to release it for you.
0:12:05 > 0:12:08Bring your hands back down into the flying position
0:12:08 > 0:12:10and try to keep the kite at 12 o'clock position.
0:12:13 > 0:12:15To turn right, pull down right on the bar.
0:12:15 > 0:12:18And to turn left, pull left on the bar. Simple.
0:12:18 > 0:12:22Your goal should be to move the kite in a big figure of eight movement.
0:12:22 > 0:12:25It's just like riding a bike, but without the peddling.
0:12:25 > 0:12:27To land the kite, just bring your bar forward
0:12:27 > 0:12:29and it should drop out of the sky.
0:12:29 > 0:12:32Never launch in high winds and aim to keep your feet
0:12:32 > 0:12:35firmly on the ground, unless you are an experienced flier, of course.
0:12:35 > 0:12:37The smaller your kite, the easier it is to learn.
0:12:37 > 0:12:39George used a harness on his bigger kite.
0:12:39 > 0:12:42You should only attempt to use a practice kite when starting out.
0:12:43 > 0:12:46I cannot believe how much I've learned to just one day.
0:12:46 > 0:12:49And that means that's Weekend Download complete.
0:12:49 > 0:12:53There's just one problem. He didn't tell me how to get it down.
0:12:53 > 0:12:56George! George!
0:12:56 > 0:12:58George, how do we get it down?
0:12:58 > 0:12:59George!
0:13:01 > 0:13:03That looks wicked. Next time the wind's up,
0:13:03 > 0:13:05I'm definitely getting involved in some of that.
0:13:05 > 0:13:09Well done, Daniel. And that is Weekend Download complete.
