0:00:03 > 0:00:06Hey, want to see some jumping dogs?
0:00:06 > 0:00:08Surfing dogs?
0:00:08 > 0:00:10And adventurous high-flying dogs?
0:00:10 > 0:00:12Then you better sit down and shut up because,
0:00:12 > 0:00:16at the doghouse, amazing dog trainer Zak George teaches
0:00:16 > 0:00:18ordinary dogs things you won't believe.
0:00:18 > 0:00:21Welcome to Who Let The Dogs Out?
0:00:21 > 0:00:24# Who let the dogs out? Woof, woof, woof, woof
0:00:24 > 0:00:28# Who let the dogs out? Woof, woof, woof, woof
0:00:28 > 0:00:32# Who let the dogs out? Woof, woof
0:00:32 > 0:00:35# Who let the dogs out? Woof, woof, woof, woof
0:00:35 > 0:00:38# Who let the dogs out? Woof, woof, woof, woof
0:00:38 > 0:00:40# Who let the dogs out? #
0:00:40 > 0:00:42Today, on Who Let The Dogs Out?,
0:00:42 > 0:00:44we're going to see leaping dogs,
0:00:44 > 0:00:46licking dogs and even
0:00:46 > 0:00:48life-saving dogs.
0:00:48 > 0:00:52Plus, three dogs will learn something pretty amazing.
0:00:54 > 0:00:56Today, we'll be seeing dogs walk on two legs.
0:00:56 > 0:00:59When this trick is done right, it looks really impressive.
0:00:59 > 0:01:02What we want our dogs to do is go up on their hind legs.
0:01:02 > 0:01:05They can walk forwards or backwards,
0:01:05 > 0:01:07whatever they're most comfortable with.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11Now, this could be tricky.
0:01:11 > 0:01:16These dogs have to get up onto their hind legs and walk along a course.
0:01:16 > 0:01:18The dog who walks the furthest will win.
0:01:20 > 0:01:24Walking on two legs is all about strength, balance and posture,
0:01:24 > 0:01:25so I'll need three agile dogs.
0:01:25 > 0:01:28I also want to see exceptional communication
0:01:28 > 0:01:30between the trainers and the dogs.
0:01:30 > 0:01:34And that's exactly what I was looking for at the try-outs.
0:01:40 > 0:01:43So, over 400 kids brought their dogs to the try-outs.
0:01:43 > 0:01:45Oh, wow! What a happy-looking dog.
0:01:45 > 0:01:47And they all hoped that Zak would
0:01:47 > 0:01:51take them to the doghouse to learn an incredible stunt.
0:01:51 > 0:01:53So he saw stretching dogs,
0:01:53 > 0:01:54fetching dogs,
0:01:54 > 0:01:57dogs that wanted to please
0:01:57 > 0:01:59- and dogs that did some wees.- No!
0:01:59 > 0:02:02All these dogs and trainers showed up and did tricks just to see if
0:02:02 > 0:02:05Zak would take them to his big fancy doghouse.
0:02:05 > 0:02:08And they didn't even know what stunt they'd end up learning.
0:02:08 > 0:02:13But the thing is, Zak only needed three teams for every stunt, not 400.
0:02:13 > 0:02:17So, in the end, for Zak's two legs challenge, he chose these ones.
0:02:17 > 0:02:20My name is Benedict. My dog's name is Mac.
0:02:20 > 0:02:23- And I come from London.- Why do you want to come to the doghouse?
0:02:23 > 0:02:27I just want to show everyone how great Mac is.
0:02:27 > 0:02:30Ben is 11 and his dog Mac is a 2-year-old miniature schnauzer.
0:02:30 > 0:02:35This red neckerchief is just one in a line of a very sophisticated
0:02:35 > 0:02:37neckwear items that Mac loves wearing.
0:02:37 > 0:02:40I just saw you both mutually connect right there.
0:02:40 > 0:02:41Come on. Good boy.
0:02:41 > 0:02:43Mac also loves attention.
0:02:43 > 0:02:45Benedict, that's good.
0:02:45 > 0:02:48In fact, so much so that when Mac's feeling attention-starved,
0:02:48 > 0:02:52he pretends he needs a wee and he scratches on the door!
0:02:52 > 0:02:54Crafty Mac!
0:02:54 > 0:02:56That was good.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59My name is Rachel. My dog's name is Puzzle.
0:02:59 > 0:03:02- I come from Paisley.- Why do you want to come to the doghouse?
0:03:02 > 0:03:05I like to come here because I love doing things with Puzzle
0:03:05 > 0:03:08and Puzzle loves doing things with me, as well.
0:03:08 > 0:03:12- Is Puzzle wearing glasses?- Yeah. - Whoa!- He's got a T-shirt on, too.
0:03:12 > 0:03:14Rachel is 12 years old.
0:03:14 > 0:03:16Her dog Puzzle is a 3-year-old Tibetan terrier.
0:03:16 > 0:03:18Rachel loves horseriding and,
0:03:18 > 0:03:22if she could teach Puzzle anything, it would be to ride a pony,
0:03:22 > 0:03:24so that they could go riding together.
0:03:24 > 0:03:25- Good boy!- That's pretty cool!
0:03:25 > 0:03:27He can walk on my back as well.
0:03:27 > 0:03:29Rachel has another dog called Quiz.
0:03:29 > 0:03:31So that's Puzzle, Quiz...
0:03:31 > 0:03:34I think there's a theme developing here.
0:03:35 > 0:03:38- Rachel and Puzzle, thank you. - Thank you.
0:03:38 > 0:03:40My name is Sam.
0:03:40 > 0:03:44My dog's name's Rooney and she is a blue merle collie.
0:03:44 > 0:03:46Why do you want to come to the doghouse?
0:03:46 > 0:03:50I want to come to the doghouse because Rooney's really clever
0:03:50 > 0:03:53and I really want to learn more tricks.
0:03:53 > 0:03:57Samantha is 10 years old and her dog Rooney is a 5-year-old border collie.
0:03:57 > 0:04:00Samantha and Rooney are a great little team.
0:04:00 > 0:04:02I want to just do stuff!
0:04:02 > 0:04:05And Rooney tries very hard to please Samantha.
0:04:05 > 0:04:07Rooney is such a teacher's pet.
0:04:07 > 0:04:10Walk tall, walk, walk. Clever girl!
0:04:10 > 0:04:12Samantha's family have got a new puppy.
0:04:12 > 0:04:14Any time the puppy does something naughty,
0:04:14 > 0:04:16Rooney barks to tell Samantha.
0:04:16 > 0:04:18Rooney, you are such a grass!
0:04:18 > 0:04:22Rooney, you are an incredible dog. You are free to go. Thank you.
0:04:22 > 0:04:23Ben and Mac, Rachel and Puzzle,
0:04:23 > 0:04:27and Samantha and Rooney have all made it to the doghouse.
0:04:27 > 0:04:30There, they're going to get two days of heavy-duty
0:04:30 > 0:04:34amazing dog training from Zak and then three weeks to practise
0:04:34 > 0:04:37before going head to head in the two-legged challenge.
0:04:37 > 0:04:41The winner will take home the Who Let The Dogs Out? Top Dog trophy.
0:04:50 > 0:04:53Training day one, and Ben, Rachel and Samantha are about to
0:04:53 > 0:04:55find out what trick they're going to learn.
0:04:55 > 0:04:57- Hey, guys.- ALL: Hi.
0:04:57 > 0:04:59- How are we doing?- Good.- Fine.- Great!
0:04:59 > 0:05:02Today, guys, we're going to teach your dogs how to walk
0:05:02 > 0:05:04on their hind legs.
0:05:04 > 0:05:05Now, how do you feel about that?
0:05:05 > 0:05:07- Excited.- Exciting stuff!
0:05:07 > 0:05:10It's a very difficult thing to do.
0:05:10 > 0:05:14But it just goes to show us what our dogs are capable of.
0:05:14 > 0:05:17Sam, show me what he can do while walking on his hind legs right now.
0:05:17 > 0:05:21- Rooney, tall. Walk, walk, walk. - Tall, look at that. Very nice.
0:05:21 > 0:05:24Not bad at all, Rooney. This should be a walk in the park for you.
0:05:24 > 0:05:27I like that but we have to work on building distance with you.
0:05:27 > 0:05:29Why don't you show me with Puzzle, Rachel?
0:05:29 > 0:05:31I want to see where you guys are.
0:05:31 > 0:05:34- Up, up, up.- Yeah, I'd say that was more like jumping, Puzzle.
0:05:34 > 0:05:37But cool ponytail!
0:05:37 > 0:05:39Puzzle does it with style there. Very good!
0:05:41 > 0:05:43That was good. I liked that. Very nice, very nice!
0:05:43 > 0:05:46OK, Mac and Ben over here.
0:05:46 > 0:05:49- MAC BARKS - Up, up, up, up.
0:05:49 > 0:05:51Oh-ho! Look at that! Nice work. Nice work, Ben.
0:05:51 > 0:05:54Mac, that's not walking. That is called spinning.
0:05:54 > 0:05:57You have a solid foundation.
0:05:57 > 0:05:59What we're talking about doing here is
0:05:59 > 0:06:01not easy, and it takes a lot of skill.
0:06:01 > 0:06:02Not only on your dog's part,
0:06:02 > 0:06:05but on your part when communicating with them.
0:06:05 > 0:06:08Secondly, you have to really build up their muscles
0:06:08 > 0:06:10so they can do a trick like this.
0:06:10 > 0:06:13- Are you guys ready to train? - ALL: Yep.- Let's do it.
0:06:13 > 0:06:15Let's see how long we can get them to stand in one place.
0:06:15 > 0:06:18In other words, don't encourage them to walk just yet.
0:06:18 > 0:06:20- Do have a treat on you?- Yep.
0:06:20 > 0:06:22Oh, that's the good stuff!
0:06:22 > 0:06:24- What is that, chicken?- Yeah.- Nice!
0:06:24 > 0:06:27Let him smell the treat like this.
0:06:27 > 0:06:28Then just bring them up a little.
0:06:28 > 0:06:30Yes, very good!
0:06:30 > 0:06:32Very good. You can click, also, with your clickers.
0:06:32 > 0:06:34Hey, you wonder what a clicker is?
0:06:34 > 0:06:35Well, listen up.
0:06:35 > 0:06:39Dog trainers use a clicker to tell their dog he's done something right.
0:06:39 > 0:06:40They click, give a treat
0:06:40 > 0:06:44and the dog soon learns that a click means that a treat is on its way.
0:06:46 > 0:06:48Puzzle loves those treats. But back to the training.
0:06:48 > 0:06:50Good boy, good boy.
0:06:50 > 0:06:52Hey, Mac's still spinning!
0:06:52 > 0:06:54The spinning is all bonus.
0:06:54 > 0:06:57It's all very nice but try and keep him still right now.
0:06:57 > 0:06:59- Up, up, up.- You know what?
0:06:59 > 0:07:01You can get down on the ground.
0:07:01 > 0:07:03You've got a little dog.
0:07:03 > 0:07:04This is where the magic happens!
0:07:04 > 0:07:07All this standing really helps the dogs to build up
0:07:07 > 0:07:10their back leg muscles so they become strong enough to walk on them.
0:07:10 > 0:07:12Can I practise for second?
0:07:12 > 0:07:14Do you see this movement right here?
0:07:14 > 0:07:18This can be very beneficial, so I've got my hand back, like this.
0:07:18 > 0:07:21It gives them a little area to balance in. And it's easy to pull
0:07:21 > 0:07:24your hand back in order to get them to go on their own.
0:07:24 > 0:07:27Yes. Good. Good, good, good. I'll take that.
0:07:27 > 0:07:29- He's very impatient, isn't he?- Yeah.
0:07:29 > 0:07:31But he's doing very well.
0:07:31 > 0:07:33Let's see how Rachel and Puzzle are getting on.
0:07:33 > 0:07:37Whoops! Puzzle, you are hanging onto Rachel's arm there.
0:07:37 > 0:07:41Try and be a little more involved because you're doing well
0:07:41 > 0:07:44but I want you to just connect eye to eye.
0:07:44 > 0:07:46- Does that make sense?- Yeah.
0:07:46 > 0:07:48- Work on that for a few seconds.- Up.
0:07:49 > 0:07:53Oh, look! Rooney is certainly getting the hang of this.
0:07:53 > 0:07:54Good girl.
0:07:54 > 0:07:55I'll take that. Beautiful!
0:07:55 > 0:07:58I want you to just take a little bit of a break, OK?
0:07:58 > 0:08:01Have your dog get some water.
0:08:07 > 0:08:11Most dogs love a challenge and it's important to encourage them
0:08:11 > 0:08:12to show off their skills.
0:08:12 > 0:08:16Here are some really athletic dogs performing amazing feats of agility.
0:08:18 > 0:08:20Yes! It's time for Olympic dogs.
0:08:21 > 0:08:24This one's doing the high jump.
0:08:24 > 0:08:26This one's doing the low jump.
0:08:29 > 0:08:31And this one just can't be bothered.
0:08:31 > 0:08:35So, just hop on a skateboard if you really can't be bothered
0:08:35 > 0:08:37and, there you are, going nowhere, in style!
0:08:39 > 0:08:41I'm not saying he's cheating but
0:08:41 > 0:08:43isn't that hoop a bit extremely low?
0:08:46 > 0:08:48There are two types of dogs...
0:08:49 > 0:08:50Ball dogs.
0:08:51 > 0:08:53Nice header!
0:08:54 > 0:08:56Top dribbling skills!
0:08:56 > 0:08:58And Frisbee dogs.
0:08:59 > 0:09:00Oh, well held!
0:09:02 > 0:09:04If only we could combine the two.
0:09:04 > 0:09:06Well, who'd have thought it?
0:09:06 > 0:09:07It's a Frisbee ball dog.
0:09:07 > 0:09:09With a bit of dribbling thrown in.
0:09:11 > 0:09:13But for sheer artistic merit,
0:09:13 > 0:09:15it's hard to beat water Frisbee.
0:09:15 > 0:09:17Beautiful dive there.
0:09:19 > 0:09:20And, talking of water, behold!
0:09:20 > 0:09:22Our action hero water dogs.
0:09:23 > 0:09:27This one is the doggy 100cm swimming champion!
0:09:29 > 0:09:32And check out this whitewater-rafting dog.
0:09:32 > 0:09:34Look at him at the front of the boat.
0:09:37 > 0:09:40He also surfs, with a human on the back of his doggy board.
0:09:41 > 0:09:46Hey, hey! Want to see a dog flying through the air?
0:09:48 > 0:09:50Look at that! Pretty impressive, eh?
0:09:56 > 0:09:59Now can you see where you buried the bone?
0:09:59 > 0:10:00No? Still not?
0:10:05 > 0:10:09Keep watching because, coming up, we have life-saving dogs,
0:10:09 > 0:10:13Zak's quick trick and we'll find out who wins the shiny
0:10:13 > 0:10:16Who Let The Dogs Out? Top Dog trophy.
0:10:20 > 0:10:24Back at the doghouse, Ben, Rachel and Sam are training hard.
0:10:24 > 0:10:26Oh, very nice. All of you are doing good.
0:10:26 > 0:10:29That was really good, too, with Puzzle. I just saw that.
0:10:29 > 0:10:31That's quite an improvement in just
0:10:31 > 0:10:34the little while we've been out here already.
0:10:34 > 0:10:37Now let's encourage them to walk along. Does that make sense?
0:10:37 > 0:10:39- ALL: Yeah.- Let's get into it!
0:10:39 > 0:10:41Walking already? Hey, this should be good.
0:10:41 > 0:10:45Yes, exactly like that, Rachel and Puzzle. Beautiful work!
0:10:45 > 0:10:48That's where you want to be. Where's the reward? Get the clicker out.
0:10:48 > 0:10:51Ben is doing exactly what Zak has told him,
0:10:51 > 0:10:54getting down at eye level and communicating with Mac.
0:10:54 > 0:10:58I really like what you're doing, Ben. Go ahead and reward for that.
0:10:58 > 0:10:59Walk, walk, walk.
0:10:59 > 0:11:01Rooney knows what she's doing.
0:11:01 > 0:11:02Wonderful work.
0:11:02 > 0:11:05Rooney, Sam, awesome job!
0:11:07 > 0:11:11Look at this. Very good. Rachel and Puzzle doing a great job. Good.
0:11:11 > 0:11:14And don't rush them, you know. Reward small victories, too.
0:11:14 > 0:11:16That's very important.
0:11:16 > 0:11:21Mac's stopped his spinning but, now, instead of walking, he's jumping!
0:11:21 > 0:11:22- Walk, walk, walk.- Oh, wow!
0:11:22 > 0:11:24Oh, nice steps, Rooney and Puzzle.
0:11:24 > 0:11:27You don't have to stay over here. Come on over here.
0:11:27 > 0:11:28Let's gather round.
0:11:28 > 0:11:31I must say, today, you guys have done exceptionally well.
0:11:31 > 0:11:33We just have to build on that.
0:11:33 > 0:11:36- Do you feel like you're doing really well so far here?- ALL: Yeah.- Good
0:11:36 > 0:11:40Tomorrow, we're going to work on building distance with our dogs
0:11:40 > 0:11:42but, for now, you guys have a lot of practice to do.
0:11:42 > 0:11:46I want you to focus on really building up their muscles,
0:11:46 > 0:11:49keeping it loving and positive, with lots of breaks.
0:11:49 > 0:11:53Rooney, Mac and Puzzle are completely different types of dogs.
0:11:53 > 0:11:55I just can't decide who's got the edge in this one.
0:11:55 > 0:11:58Let's take a look at their mutt measurements.
0:12:01 > 0:12:04This is Rooney, the blue merle border collie.
0:12:04 > 0:12:07They're called this because their coats look blue. Simple.
0:12:07 > 0:12:09Rooney is a supergrass.
0:12:09 > 0:12:12She barks out loud when the family's new puppy does something naughty.
0:12:12 > 0:12:15Collies are clever but, if their trainer is nervous,
0:12:15 > 0:12:17it affects how well they learn a trick.
0:12:17 > 0:12:19Will Rooney hold her nerve?
0:12:20 > 0:12:22Mac, the miniature schnauzer.
0:12:22 > 0:12:26Schnauzers come from Germany, where they used to do farm jobs,
0:12:26 > 0:12:27like hunting rats.
0:12:27 > 0:12:30Wow! I bet Mac's happy he doesn't have to do that any more.
0:12:30 > 0:12:32Mac is a very fashion-conscious dog.
0:12:32 > 0:12:33He likes wearing a neckerchief.
0:12:33 > 0:12:36Schnauzers are strong but they're not very tall.
0:12:36 > 0:12:40The question is, will Mac be able to balance on such small legs?
0:12:42 > 0:12:43Puzzle is a Tibetan terrier.
0:12:43 > 0:12:46They come all the way from China.
0:12:47 > 0:12:50Puzzle attracts loads of attention wherever he goes
0:12:50 > 0:12:52because of his cool, curly coat.
0:12:52 > 0:12:56His favourite person in the world is Rachel and he loves eating treats.
0:12:56 > 0:13:00Tibetan Terriers have very strong back legs so surely Puzzle
0:13:00 > 0:13:04will have no problems at all on two legs when it comes to showtime.
0:13:08 > 0:13:11It's training day two.
0:13:11 > 0:13:13And Ben and Mac, Rachel and Puzzle,
0:13:13 > 0:13:15and Sam and Rooney are making great progress.
0:13:15 > 0:13:18Very good. Very good. OK, guys, come on over here.
0:13:18 > 0:13:22Let's talk about how training's going.
0:13:22 > 0:13:26What's been the most challenging thing for you on this trick so far?
0:13:26 > 0:13:29I think getting her to stop holding onto my arm.
0:13:29 > 0:13:31And is she still doing that to some degree?
0:13:31 > 0:13:32Well, a little bit.
0:13:34 > 0:13:35Well, how did you get her to stop?
0:13:35 > 0:13:39I just lifted my hand up further and I walked faster backwards.
0:13:39 > 0:13:41All right, let's see you, Rachel and Puzzle.
0:13:41 > 0:13:43Tell me how things have been going.
0:13:43 > 0:13:44What has been difficult for you?
0:13:44 > 0:13:46Him holding onto my arm.
0:13:46 > 0:13:49Ohhh! Look at this!
0:13:49 > 0:13:53You got scratched up and you're like, "Whatever."
0:13:53 > 0:13:58Puzzle is so desperate for that treat that he's scratching Rachel.
0:13:58 > 0:14:01But that's getting better now cos I've put my hand a bit higher
0:14:01 > 0:14:02and he's been walking more now.
0:14:02 > 0:14:04So he's not been holding on as much.
0:14:04 > 0:14:06Good boy.
0:14:06 > 0:14:08Now THAT is friendship for you.
0:14:09 > 0:14:11All right, Mac! What's going on?
0:14:11 > 0:14:13- Hey, Ben.- Hi.- How are you?
0:14:13 > 0:14:14Fine, thanks, yeah.
0:14:14 > 0:14:16So you've had a lot of improvement or not?
0:14:16 > 0:14:21Well, before he was occasionally going into a spin but,
0:14:21 > 0:14:25with a different hand movement, when he's walking,
0:14:25 > 0:14:27I've managed to cut that out.
0:14:27 > 0:14:29You had to communicate to him
0:14:29 > 0:14:32- doing something new is what you were looking for.- Yeah.
0:14:32 > 0:14:35Sometimes that can be harder than teaching a trick from scratch,
0:14:35 > 0:14:37so that is really, really good.
0:14:37 > 0:14:40All right! Good job!
0:14:41 > 0:14:45All right, take a break here for a second.
0:14:45 > 0:14:46All the teams are doing well so far.
0:14:46 > 0:14:48I wonder what Zak has in store for them next.
0:14:48 > 0:14:52What I'm going for now is, I want you to have your dogs walk on their
0:14:52 > 0:14:54hind legs from maybe this far away.
0:14:54 > 0:14:58Or a bit further than you're currently doing, whatever that is.
0:14:58 > 0:15:00- Is that clear?- ALL: Yep.
0:15:00 > 0:15:02Let's work on it and I'm going to kind of observe.
0:15:02 > 0:15:05So the dogs need to walk on their hind legs
0:15:05 > 0:15:07without leaning on their trainer.
0:15:07 > 0:15:09That is good enough to participate in the competition.
0:15:09 > 0:15:12But you've got to really work on distance.
0:15:12 > 0:15:15Do a solid sit-stay, just like Rachel and Puzzle are doing.
0:15:15 > 0:15:17Do you guys see what they're doing?
0:15:17 > 0:15:21Sit, stay and then walk back a step and have them do it.
0:15:21 > 0:15:26Rachel's patience is really paying off. Check out Puzzle.
0:15:26 > 0:15:28He's not hanging onto Rachel's arm any more.
0:15:28 > 0:15:29Sit. Stay.
0:15:29 > 0:15:33Sam is trying to work on keeping a distance between her and Rooney
0:15:33 > 0:15:35but Rooney is having none of it.
0:15:35 > 0:15:38She just wants to keep close to Sam!
0:15:38 > 0:15:41What are you using here to reward Rooney with?
0:15:41 > 0:15:44I use the toy to reward and I use the treat to make her walk.
0:15:44 > 0:15:46- Well, that's different than yesterday, right?- Yeah.
0:15:46 > 0:15:49So explain to me why you've changed your strategy there.
0:15:49 > 0:15:52Because she likes the toy and it works better.
0:15:52 > 0:15:55So you're using the food more and then you're using the toy
0:15:55 > 0:15:57as like a jackpot reward, basically.
0:15:57 > 0:15:58Yeah, yeah.
0:15:58 > 0:16:02- Because this is what she loves more than anything.- Yeah, yeah.
0:16:02 > 0:16:04Stay. Stay.
0:16:04 > 0:16:06- Up, up, up. Ohhh. - Oh, that's OK.
0:16:06 > 0:16:10Did you hear that sigh you did just there? Let's talk about that.
0:16:10 > 0:16:14That sigh is so natural and so normal to do and I've done it
0:16:14 > 0:16:18so much when I've gotten frustrated in dog training in the past.
0:16:18 > 0:16:19Shush.
0:16:19 > 0:16:21But do you know what that sigh means?
0:16:21 > 0:16:25Because our dogs hear that. It says, "I'm discouraged right now."
0:16:25 > 0:16:29And our dogs know from past experience that training just
0:16:29 > 0:16:30isn't as fun any more.
0:16:30 > 0:16:33So we have to reach deep to not get discouraged.
0:16:33 > 0:16:37And if we find ourselves getting discouraged, just take a break.
0:16:37 > 0:16:38It's no big deal.
0:16:38 > 0:16:41- Up, up, up. Up, up, up. - That's more like it, Ben!
0:16:41 > 0:16:42And look at the difference in Mac.
0:16:42 > 0:16:46This change of strategy could really help them. Especially at showtime.
0:16:46 > 0:16:48Believe it or not, you know everything
0:16:48 > 0:16:51you need to know to get this trick done.
0:16:51 > 0:16:55Remember, the dog that travels the furthest distance will win.
0:16:55 > 0:16:57It's a matter of working on it every day.
0:16:57 > 0:17:01But make sure you give your dog a day off every once in a while, too.
0:17:01 > 0:17:04All right, y'all, you've got three weeks to go home and
0:17:04 > 0:17:06we'll see you back here at the doghouse for showtime!
0:17:06 > 0:17:08Start practising.
0:17:11 > 0:17:15I just hope they don't put off training until the last week.
0:17:15 > 0:17:17If we're going to see a big improvement,
0:17:17 > 0:17:19they've got to put in a huge amount of work.
0:17:19 > 0:17:23So, here are Zak's five steps to walking on two legs.
0:17:23 > 0:17:27One, encourage your dog to stand up on two legs.
0:17:27 > 0:17:32Two, build towards having your dog stay up there for a few seconds.
0:17:32 > 0:17:37Three, using a reward, urge your dog to take a few steps towards you.
0:17:37 > 0:17:40Four, over time, increase the distance
0:17:40 > 0:17:42your dog can walk on two legs.
0:17:42 > 0:17:44Five, this trick requires muscle strength,
0:17:44 > 0:17:47so train your dog regularly with lots of breaks.
0:17:51 > 0:17:53You don't need to come to the doghouse to teach
0:17:53 > 0:17:55your dog a cool trick.
0:17:55 > 0:17:58Today, we're going to show you how to teach your dog to play dead.
0:17:58 > 0:18:01Come here, Nelly. Very good!
0:18:01 > 0:18:02Look what I've got!
0:18:02 > 0:18:04I know! Turkey.
0:18:04 > 0:18:06Play dead is a really fun trick.
0:18:06 > 0:18:09First, make sure that your dog knows how to lie down.
0:18:09 > 0:18:10Nelly, lie down. Perfect.
0:18:10 > 0:18:13Once they've got that, it's a good idea to kind of encourage them
0:18:13 > 0:18:17to go on their side by luring them with something really good.
0:18:17 > 0:18:19I'm using real meat. That is perfect.
0:18:19 > 0:18:22And I'm going to reward her to let her know I love it.
0:18:22 > 0:18:25Now, once she gets in the final position,
0:18:25 > 0:18:27I'm going to put the command with the actual trick.
0:18:27 > 0:18:29In this case, I'll use play dead.
0:18:29 > 0:18:31Play dead. Yes!
0:18:31 > 0:18:34Initially, I just went for one second of her keeping still
0:18:34 > 0:18:36on the ground to let her know I like that.
0:18:36 > 0:18:38Very good. Come on, back up.
0:18:38 > 0:18:42Yes, good. Here we go. Lie down.
0:18:42 > 0:18:43Stay.
0:18:44 > 0:18:48Play dead. Yes! I went for about two or three seconds that time.
0:18:48 > 0:18:49Good. Come on, back up.
0:18:49 > 0:18:50Let's try it one more time.
0:18:54 > 0:18:57Phasing out the lure so it's less obvious and it looks a lot cooler
0:18:57 > 0:19:01when you can communicate with your dog with more distance.
0:19:01 > 0:19:02Play dead. Yes!
0:19:02 > 0:19:05Now let's try and do it with a little bit of distance
0:19:05 > 0:19:06and see how impressive it looks.
0:19:06 > 0:19:08Nelly, come on, get up.
0:19:08 > 0:19:09Good. Stay.
0:19:09 > 0:19:10Lie down.
0:19:10 > 0:19:12Play dead.
0:19:13 > 0:19:15And that's how you do it. Good girl.
0:19:18 > 0:19:21Throughout history, there have been many tales of dogs
0:19:21 > 0:19:23who put their own lives at risk to save others.
0:19:23 > 0:19:25And they're still at it.
0:19:25 > 0:19:28Here's some of my favourite life-saving dogs.
0:19:31 > 0:19:36Leaping from speeding boats, helping swimmers who get into trouble,
0:19:36 > 0:19:39it's the incredible doggy-paddling lifeguards.
0:19:39 > 0:19:42In Italy, hundreds of specially-trained dogs are saving
0:19:42 > 0:19:44the lives of struggling swimmers.
0:19:44 > 0:19:47Just like a human lifeguard these fearless dogs scramble to
0:19:47 > 0:19:51the rescue, wearing their distinctive red lifejackets.
0:19:51 > 0:19:55These brave lifeguard dogs intuitively know how to swim
0:19:55 > 0:19:58through the safest currents to find the best landing areas.
0:19:58 > 0:20:02And they are perfectly capable of taking life buoys to swimmers
0:20:02 > 0:20:05and towing them back to safety, all on their own.
0:20:05 > 0:20:08But the most amazing thing about these doggy lifeguards
0:20:08 > 0:20:11is that they instinctively know when a person needs help,
0:20:11 > 0:20:14long before their human colleagues do.
0:20:14 > 0:20:16These dogs are truly incredible.
0:20:21 > 0:20:22This is Leo.
0:20:22 > 0:20:25When a fire broke out in this house in Australia,
0:20:25 > 0:20:29this plucky little fellow refused to leave with the rest of the family.
0:20:29 > 0:20:33Leo chose to stay behind in the fire to guard four little kittens
0:20:33 > 0:20:37that were stuck in a cardboard box in one of the bedrooms.
0:20:38 > 0:20:41By the time the firefighters found Leo guarding the kittens,
0:20:41 > 0:20:44he had succumbed to the smoke and heat and was unconscious.
0:20:44 > 0:20:46They rushed him to safety
0:20:46 > 0:20:49and revived the unconscious little dog with a heart massage and oxygen.
0:20:49 > 0:20:54When he came round, Leo was delighted to see the tiny kittens again.
0:20:54 > 0:20:56What a hero!
0:21:01 > 0:21:04Today, it's showtime.
0:21:04 > 0:21:06Three weeks of training ends now.
0:21:06 > 0:21:09This is the biggest challenge
0:21:09 > 0:21:13Mac, Rooney and Puzzle have ever faced.
0:21:14 > 0:21:16There can only be one winner.
0:21:22 > 0:21:24When we first saw Mac, he wasn't walking, so much as
0:21:24 > 0:21:27just spinning around like a ballet dancer.
0:21:27 > 0:21:30But Ben changed his tactics and Mac has made some good progress at home.
0:21:30 > 0:21:33It's been going well and Mac's made some good improvements.
0:21:33 > 0:21:35I've changed the voice command
0:21:35 > 0:21:38and a couple of other body language things, which actually helped.
0:21:38 > 0:21:41Well, I think me and Mac have got a good chance.
0:21:41 > 0:21:44Although Puzzle has naturally strong legs,
0:21:44 > 0:21:46she's been leaning on Rachel's arm.
0:21:46 > 0:21:48Will she be able to walk unassisted at showtime?
0:21:48 > 0:21:52I've stopped him doing that so he's been really good.
0:21:52 > 0:21:56We've been practising every second and third day so he can get a rest.
0:21:57 > 0:21:59At first, Rooney was doing really well and, at home,
0:21:59 > 0:22:03Sam's been using a stick to get some distance between her and Rooney.
0:22:03 > 0:22:05But it's not gone as planned
0:22:05 > 0:22:08because Rooney's now not concentrating on the trick.
0:22:11 > 0:22:14She can get tired quite quickly and I was getting really frustrated.
0:22:14 > 0:22:17But if she did it right I'd give her lots and lots of praise
0:22:17 > 0:22:20and she'd be really happy.
0:22:20 > 0:22:24Today is the big day. It's showtime!
0:22:28 > 0:22:30Who has learned to walk on two legs?
0:22:31 > 0:22:33Who will go the furthest?
0:22:35 > 0:22:39And who will walk away with the Who Let The Dogs Out? Top Dog trophy?
0:22:43 > 0:22:46It's showtime for Mac, Rooney and Puzzle,
0:22:46 > 0:22:48and I can't wait to see how they do.
0:22:48 > 0:22:51Right here is where they'll be walking on two legs.
0:22:51 > 0:22:53And right there is the camera that will determine
0:22:53 > 0:22:55just how far they travel.
0:22:55 > 0:22:59Each dog will be awarded one point for every metre they travel.
0:22:59 > 0:23:01They'll have three chances at this
0:23:01 > 0:23:04but only their best attempt will count.
0:23:04 > 0:23:06First up for showtime are Ben and Mac.
0:23:06 > 0:23:09Whenever you're ready to start, go ahead.
0:23:09 > 0:23:11Hang on, where's Mac's lucky neckerchief?
0:23:11 > 0:23:13Oh, there it is. Phew!
0:23:13 > 0:23:15- Come here.- Mac's first attempt.
0:23:15 > 0:23:19Remember, the further he walks on two legs, the better. Off he goes.
0:23:19 > 0:23:21Confident start.
0:23:23 > 0:23:27Hm, looks like he's doing more jumping than walking. And he's down!
0:23:27 > 0:23:29How far was that?
0:23:30 > 0:23:32Let's have another look.
0:23:32 > 0:23:34Off he goes.
0:23:34 > 0:23:361.75 metres. Not bad.
0:23:36 > 0:23:40Mac has another two goes left and he starts where his last go ended.
0:23:40 > 0:23:43He'll have three attempts but it's only his best that counts.
0:23:43 > 0:23:46So, can he walk further than 1.75 metres?
0:23:46 > 0:23:48Check out Ben's energy.
0:23:48 > 0:23:50That's excellent training.
0:23:50 > 0:23:54Another good walk, but was it as far as his first?
0:23:54 > 0:23:551.75 metres again.
0:23:55 > 0:23:57This is Mac's last attempt.
0:23:57 > 0:23:59Is he going to walk any further?
0:23:59 > 0:24:01Is his lucky neckerchief going to help him do it?
0:24:04 > 0:24:08No spinning, just good walking on two legs.
0:24:08 > 0:24:101.75 metres again!
0:24:10 > 0:24:13Rachel and Puzzle, you're up. You can go on your own time.
0:24:13 > 0:24:16Now Puzzle needs to walk more than 1.75 metres to beat Mac.
0:24:16 > 0:24:20The distance is measured from their hind legs at the point they
0:24:20 > 0:24:24start walking, to the point at which their hind legs are when they stop.
0:24:24 > 0:24:28Oh, nice lift, Puzzle. But did he get the distance?
0:24:28 > 0:24:29Ohhh! 0.75 metres.
0:24:29 > 0:24:31Not good enough to beat Ben and Mac so far
0:24:31 > 0:24:34but he has got another two attempts left.
0:24:34 > 0:24:38He'll need to walk further than that for a chance
0:24:38 > 0:24:40to win the Top Dog trophy.
0:24:40 > 0:24:43Oh, no! Not quite a metre.
0:24:43 > 0:24:45Has the pressure of showtime got to Puzzle?
0:24:45 > 0:24:47This is Puzzle's last try.
0:24:47 > 0:24:50Go, Puzzle!
0:24:54 > 0:24:56Puzzle has a strong stand.
0:24:56 > 0:24:57Just look at those legs.
0:24:57 > 0:25:00But he's not quite walking the distance today.
0:25:00 > 0:25:02That was just 0.75 metres.
0:25:04 > 0:25:06Sam and Rooney, it's your turn. Good luck.
0:25:06 > 0:25:08Can Rooney concentrate
0:25:08 > 0:25:10and listen to Samantha's instructions?
0:25:10 > 0:25:13The distance to beat is Mac's 1.75 metres. Can she do it?
0:25:16 > 0:25:18Oh, look at Rooney go!
0:25:18 > 0:25:19She's amazing!
0:25:19 > 0:25:22Walk, walk, walk.
0:25:24 > 0:25:25Let's see that again.
0:25:25 > 0:25:26That was fantastic.
0:25:26 > 0:25:28But how far did she go?
0:25:31 > 0:25:33Ah! 3.9 metres!
0:25:33 > 0:25:35That beats Mac and Puzzle.
0:25:35 > 0:25:38Can Rooney beat her own score in the next two attempts?
0:25:38 > 0:25:42Tall. Walk, walk, walk, walk.
0:25:46 > 0:25:49That's it. Walk, walk, walk, Rooney.
0:25:49 > 0:25:52Wow! This is unbelievable. Look at her go!
0:25:52 > 0:25:55Rooney is walking right off the course. Even Zak is speechless!
0:25:59 > 0:26:03We had to use another special camera to capture Rooney's massive walk
0:26:03 > 0:26:07because she walked so far off the course.
0:26:07 > 0:26:09This is far! This is really far!
0:26:09 > 0:26:11Eight metres.
0:26:11 > 0:26:14That is beyond!
0:26:14 > 0:26:18Surely Rooney can't beat eight metres in her last try, can she?
0:26:18 > 0:26:20Check her out.
0:26:26 > 0:26:30She looks more like a kangaroo than a dog.
0:26:30 > 0:26:31How far was that?
0:26:31 > 0:26:34Let's have another look at a bouncing kangaroo Rooney.
0:26:34 > 0:26:36Look at her go! This is impressive.
0:26:39 > 0:26:40Six metres. Goo-ood!
0:26:44 > 0:26:48All of you did an incredible job today. Did you enjoy the experience?
0:26:48 > 0:26:51- ALL: Yes.- I was really impressed with all of your progress.
0:26:51 > 0:26:54Ben and Mac, I love your energy. Fantastic!
0:26:54 > 0:26:58It looks like you've done a great job,
0:26:58 > 0:27:00really building that energy with Mac. Wonderful.
0:27:00 > 0:27:04Rachel and Puzzle, really enjoyed watching you all work together
0:27:04 > 0:27:07and I feel like you've grown a bit closer through this whole process.
0:27:07 > 0:27:09- Am I right?- Yeah.
0:27:09 > 0:27:11Sam and Rooney.
0:27:11 > 0:27:12ROONEY BARKS
