0:00:40 > 0:00:44Today on Who Let the Dogs Out? we're going to see colourful dogs,

0:00:44 > 0:00:47fashionable dogs and even some crime-fighting dogs.

0:00:47 > 0:00:52Plus three lucky canines will learn something very unusual.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55Today we are teaching our dogs a back stall.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58If you don't know what that is, listen up.

0:00:58 > 0:01:02What we want our dogs to do is jump on to their trainer's back

0:01:02 > 0:01:05and stay there for three seconds before jumping off.

0:01:05 > 0:01:08We will see how many times they can do this in a minute.

0:01:11 > 0:01:15Because our trainers are young, we need some smallish dogs.

0:01:15 > 0:01:19Nobody wants a St Bernard jumping on their back.

0:01:19 > 0:01:23I'm also looking for dogs that love to jump.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25Let's see what happened at the try-outs.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33Over 400 kids brought their dogs to the try-outs,

0:01:33 > 0:01:38hoping Zak would take them to the doghouse to learn incredible stunts.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41We saw small dogs,

0:01:41 > 0:01:44spinning dogs, singing dogs,

0:01:44 > 0:01:47dogs that were relieved to be there

0:01:47 > 0:01:49and dogs that jumped through hoops to get there.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53These dogs and trainers showed up to see if Zak

0:01:53 > 0:01:55would take them to his fancy doghouse.

0:01:55 > 0:01:59They didn't even know what stunt they'd end up learning.

0:01:59 > 0:02:03The thing is, Zak only needed three teams for every stunt, not 400.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06In the end, for back stall, he chose these ones.

0:02:06 > 0:02:11I'm Anna. This is Alfie, he's a Shetland sheepdog. I'm from Norwich.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14- Does Alfie do a lot of things? - Quite a few, yeah.

0:02:14 > 0:02:15Get started.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18- Anna is 12 and she has two dogs. - Good boy!

0:02:18 > 0:02:22Alfie is two and Anna says he's much cleverer than her poodle.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25Good boy. Down.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27She describes Alfie as 'magnificent',

0:02:27 > 0:02:30which is pretty accurate as he can do 21 tricks.

0:02:30 > 0:02:31Check him out.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34Weave, weave, weave, weave, weave.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36- Good boy!- Terrific.

0:02:36 > 0:02:40You have the touch. That's what you need to be a good dog trainer.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42Zak thought Anna and Alfie were very talented

0:02:42 > 0:02:47and Alfie's desire to learn new tricks means they could easily win.

0:02:47 > 0:02:51- It's been good to meet you. - It's nice to meet you as well.

0:02:51 > 0:02:56My name's Rebecca, this is Petra and we came all the way from Newcastle.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58- Show me some tricks. - OK.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00Come. Sit. Sit.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02Emergency stop, that's very good.

0:03:02 > 0:03:07Rebecca is 12-years-old and Petra, the cockapoo, is two.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09Weave. Good girl.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11That was a really good effort.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14Petra's name is a combination of the initials

0:03:14 > 0:03:16from Rebecca's family names.

0:03:16 > 0:03:20Rebecca and Petra are so good, they often win dog-training competitions.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23- Can you help me with a trick, please?- Yeah.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25Zak thought they were a fun team.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28Though they still have lots to learn,

0:03:28 > 0:03:31Petra jumping made them perfect for the back stall.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33- Good girl! - A back stall!

0:03:33 > 0:03:36Say bye-bye. Good girl!

0:03:37 > 0:03:40I'm Charlie, this is Margot. We are from Winchester.

0:03:40 > 0:03:44I didn't know I was getting entered. My sister entered me. I didn't know.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47Margot is really good, she learns things fast.

0:03:47 > 0:03:48- Go ahead and show me.- OK.

0:03:48 > 0:03:52- Charlie is 12 years old and Margot is two.- Nice!

0:03:52 > 0:03:55- She can go a lot higher. - He describes Margot as bouncy.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58She can jump over sticks as well as hoops.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01- These jumping skills could come in handy.- Up, up!

0:04:01 > 0:04:03Perfect.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05Zak loved Charlie's communication

0:04:05 > 0:04:08and Margot's balancing skills, essential for the back stall.

0:04:08 > 0:04:12- I'm very impressed by your demeanour and you have a great dog.- Thank you.

0:04:13 > 0:04:15So, Anna and Alfie, Rebecca and Petra,

0:04:15 > 0:04:18and Charlie and Margot have all made it into the doghouse.

0:04:18 > 0:04:23They'll receive two days of super Zak-style expert dog training

0:04:23 > 0:04:25followed by two weeks of practice,

0:04:25 > 0:04:29before going head to head in a back stall challenge.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33The winner will take home this - the Who Let The Dogs Out Top Dog trophy.

0:04:39 > 0:04:44- All right, guys. How we doing? - Training day one.- Yeah!

0:04:44 > 0:04:47- Are you ready to train your dogs a trick?- ALL:- Yeah!

0:04:47 > 0:04:51Guys, we are going to teach our dogs how to do the back stall today.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53ALL: Wow! Whoa!

0:04:53 > 0:04:56Now, the thing that I love about this trick is that

0:04:56 > 0:05:00it really builds mutual trust between you and your dog,

0:05:00 > 0:05:02so we have to really get them comfortable up there,

0:05:02 > 0:05:05so they are enjoying the trick. Make sense? Excellent.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08- Do you guys have your currency? - Yeah.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12- What's currency?- Money in treats. - Exactly. You would know about money!

0:05:12 > 0:05:15You strike me as a businessman right here. Excellent.

0:05:15 > 0:05:19All right, so treats or playing or whatever their form of money is.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21- Ready to get into training? - ALL:- Yeah.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24So first thing, you'll notice we have these boxes here.

0:05:24 > 0:05:28We want to get our dogs to get up here and get comfortable.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30Let's just get right into that.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33- Hey, no problems for these three! - We look really good right now.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37Now we already know that Petra can jump on other people's backs,

0:05:37 > 0:05:40but isn't she a bit big for jumping on Rebecca's back?

0:05:40 > 0:05:42Good work. Keep working on it.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45I just want them to get real comfortable hopping on and off

0:05:45 > 0:05:47and then we'll go to the next step in just a moment.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49- Margot, what's this? - No pulling, no pulling,

0:05:49 > 0:05:54because we want our dogs to think, we don't want to have to pull them.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57Margot has proved she's a good jumper, but she is quite small

0:05:57 > 0:06:00and Charlie's a tall lad. Will she be able to jump that high?

0:06:02 > 0:06:04It's very easy to jump on a very stable surface,

0:06:04 > 0:06:08but when you're on the ground... Ultimately you'll be down like this

0:06:08 > 0:06:11and your dog will be on your back. Why are you laughing?

0:06:11 > 0:06:15- Is it really that funny?- Yeah.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18While they're up here, I want you to very subtly move it.

0:06:18 > 0:06:22See how I'm moving it right there? Just enough to get them comfortable.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26Alfie looks cosy indeed! We know that he's an intelligent dog,

0:06:26 > 0:06:28but he's young and full of energy.

0:06:28 > 0:06:30Will he be able to concentrate?

0:06:31 > 0:06:34Good boy! Well done!

0:06:34 > 0:06:39And up! Good girl, Petra.

0:06:41 > 0:06:43- Good girl!- Alfie!

0:06:43 > 0:06:47- Alfie, come here.- Stay. - No, don't listen to Momma!

0:06:47 > 0:06:50- Stay.- You come here, come here. - Stay.- Oh, Alfie, you come here.

0:06:50 > 0:06:54- Stay, stay. - Alfie either adores his trainer

0:06:54 > 0:06:58or he knows who has the turkey pieces.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01Yes, you don't listen to him, do you? Good boy!

0:07:01 > 0:07:05- That is a thing of beauty! - Good girl, you did it!

0:07:05 > 0:07:07OK, I heard a click over here.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09- That was me.- You're using the click,

0:07:09 > 0:07:11- tell me what it means. - It's like a reward,

0:07:11 > 0:07:13telling them they've done something good.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15That's exactly right, Charlie.

0:07:15 > 0:07:17Wondering what a clicker is?

0:07:17 > 0:07:19Dog trainers use a clicky thing

0:07:19 > 0:07:21to tell their dog he's done something right.

0:07:21 > 0:07:23They click, give a treat

0:07:23 > 0:07:26and the dog learns a click means a treat's on its way.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34I was really impressed with our teams today.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37We've seen some real talent and we're about to see some more.

0:07:37 > 0:07:41Here are some dogs who know how to dress for success.

0:07:44 > 0:07:46So, people, this is the question everyone's asking.

0:07:46 > 0:07:50What is the most happening accessory nowadays?

0:07:50 > 0:07:54Is it painting yourself blue...very badly?

0:07:55 > 0:08:00Or painting yourself green...extremely badly?

0:08:01 > 0:08:05Or painting yourself Canadian...rather well, actually.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08Apart from the ears. Eugh!

0:08:08 > 0:08:10Now, once you've got yourself painted,

0:08:10 > 0:08:12the big accessory is to get yourself a hat.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15And those are not hats!

0:08:16 > 0:08:23No, that is not a hat either! That is a handbag. Ohh...

0:08:23 > 0:08:29Now there is a totally happening hat! Very now! Very cool, Jennifer!

0:08:29 > 0:08:34Oh! Oh! Hello! A Johnny Depp hat! That is class!

0:08:34 > 0:08:35That is not.

0:08:35 > 0:08:40That is two black mushrooms on your head.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43That IS cool, that is bling!

0:08:43 > 0:08:45Mm-hm, check it out. High-five!

0:08:49 > 0:08:53Now, he's cool. He is totally cool. He's so cool, he's bored.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55Nice to have a maid, though.

0:08:58 > 0:09:04Who did what to that dog's ears?

0:09:04 > 0:09:05Please!

0:09:07 > 0:09:13Oh! Good Frisbee work! Just stay still, do not move, OK?

0:09:13 > 0:09:15Stay still, stay cool.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18Oh! You moved, you moved!

0:09:18 > 0:09:21It's imaginative, it's ecologically sound,

0:09:21 > 0:09:25but it's still just a bottle top on a dog's head.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30Oh! Oh! Oh, this is the winner!

0:09:30 > 0:09:32Oh, I love this look!

0:09:32 > 0:09:34Oh, look, this is THE dog accessory!

0:09:34 > 0:09:37It's a pair of human hands.

0:09:37 > 0:09:42Oh, this is genius! This is art! This is high art! Total dog cool!

0:09:44 > 0:09:47Still to come, we've got crime-fighting canines,

0:09:47 > 0:09:50Zak's quick trick,

0:09:50 > 0:09:55and we'll find out who wins the Who Let The Dogs Out Top Dog trophy.

0:09:59 > 0:10:01Anna, Rebecca and Charlie

0:10:01 > 0:10:04are about to put their backs into the back stall.

0:10:04 > 0:10:08So, Rebecca, come over here, right here, and get down just like this.

0:10:08 > 0:10:11- And you want to keep your back really flat.- OK.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14Petra, come here. Very nice. Up here, Petra, come on.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17Very good! Yes!

0:10:17 > 0:10:19That's what I'm talking about! Stay.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22One, two, three, get down, come on.

0:10:22 > 0:10:24Amazing! The first back stall!

0:10:24 > 0:10:27That's what we want to see. Let's get cracking. Come on.

0:10:27 > 0:10:31Let's practise. So just get him... Any foot movement...

0:10:31 > 0:10:34Yes, right there. Reward, reward, yes, good. Yes, good, good!

0:10:34 > 0:10:38Down, back flat. Come on, up here. Yes, good!

0:10:38 > 0:10:41Here we go - look at this! Come on, come on, go on, yes!

0:10:41 > 0:10:44Margot's got it! We've got some competition for Rebecca and Petra.

0:10:44 > 0:10:48Having a dog stand on your back like this is one of

0:10:48 > 0:10:50the coolest feelings you could imagine.

0:10:50 > 0:10:52- Look at that!- Hey, look!

0:10:52 > 0:10:56Rebecca and Petra are the first to do a solo back stall.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58You want to work on keeping your back flat there.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01Anna and Alfie are having a spot of bother.

0:11:01 > 0:11:03I just saw that look in Alfie's eyes.

0:11:03 > 0:11:05He's like, "I'm trying really hard

0:11:05 > 0:11:07"to figure out what you're asking me to do here.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10"I'm a bit confused, but I'm willing to do it."

0:11:10 > 0:11:13That is exactly what Alfie is saying. Continue to work,

0:11:13 > 0:11:14he's on the right track.

0:11:14 > 0:11:17I can't believe it! Looking good, Rebecca!

0:11:17 > 0:11:20So how do you feel about training so far? How's it going?

0:11:20 > 0:11:23- It's going really well. - What do you enjoy about this trick?

0:11:23 > 0:11:27That she's on my back. I love it!

0:11:29 > 0:11:32- Oh-ho! Nice work, nice work! - Good girl. The hardest bit

0:11:32 > 0:11:35is just showing how to get her to jump on my back.

0:11:35 > 0:11:37It's hard to show her what to do.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40That is the toughest part of this trick.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45- Have you had any success so far? - It's been going OK.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47He's sort of half climbed, half jumped.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50- Let's work on it.- Alfie!

0:11:50 > 0:11:51I'm going to help you.

0:11:51 > 0:11:53Stay. Yes, good work!

0:11:53 > 0:11:55- You're making progress.- Alfie!

0:11:55 > 0:12:00Looks like Alfie just does not want to learn the back stall today.

0:12:00 > 0:12:03Here we go, look what I found. I've got me an Alfie. OK.

0:12:04 > 0:12:08Yes, stay! Good! All four paws hit your back there.

0:12:08 > 0:12:10That's exactly what we want to do.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12Guys, you're doing a wonderful job.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15Continue to practise for the rest of the day

0:12:15 > 0:12:16and I'll see you tomorrow, OK?

0:12:18 > 0:12:22Just as Zak's leaving, Charlie has a breakthrough! A solo back stall!

0:12:22 > 0:12:26Alfie, Margot and Petra might all be quite small,

0:12:26 > 0:12:28but they're very different dogs.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31Let's take a look at their mutt measurements.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34Alfie is a Shetland Sheepdog

0:12:34 > 0:12:38and Shelties have been around for hundreds of years.

0:12:38 > 0:12:40They're even older than your granddad!

0:12:40 > 0:12:42Alfie's favourite food is sausages

0:12:42 > 0:12:44and his most-loved pastime in the world

0:12:44 > 0:12:46is getting a little tickle under his collar.

0:12:46 > 0:12:50Shelties are clever, so Alfie should have no problems learning this trick

0:12:50 > 0:12:53unless he just wants collar tickles all day.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55Petra is a Cockapoo.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58That's a Cocker Spaniel crossed with a Poodle.

0:12:58 > 0:13:02Petra loves nothing more than licking people's ears

0:13:02 > 0:13:05and her party trick is pinching people's purses from their handbags.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08Cockapoos are often loving and excitable,

0:13:08 > 0:13:11so will Petra have perfected this trick by show time,

0:13:11 > 0:13:14or will she be far too excited at being in the doghouse

0:13:14 > 0:13:16to pay any attention?

0:13:16 > 0:13:18And finally we have Margot.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21Margot is a cross between a Jack Russell and a Border Terrier.

0:13:21 > 0:13:25Margot enjoys eating Charlie's vegetables so he doesn't have to,

0:13:25 > 0:13:28but she also loves listening to him burp the alphabet.

0:13:28 > 0:13:32Border Terriers are energetic while Jack Russells are athletic,

0:13:32 > 0:13:34but will they be going for gold in show time

0:13:34 > 0:13:37and claiming the Top Dog trophy? Only time will tell!

0:13:41 > 0:13:43Day two of back stall training.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46Charlie and Margot and Rebecca and Petra

0:13:46 > 0:13:50have both done a back stall, but Anna and Alfie are still trying.

0:13:50 > 0:13:53- Hey, guys! How we doing this morning?- ALL:- Hi!

0:13:53 > 0:13:58Wow! Let's start with you, Rebecca. Now you had a pretty good yesterday.

0:13:58 > 0:14:02How consistent have you been on having the three-second stay?

0:14:02 > 0:14:04I've been having two treats in my hand -

0:14:04 > 0:14:07one behind it hiding there and one up there,

0:14:07 > 0:14:09so I count to three and then I release the one

0:14:09 > 0:14:13and then I tell her to get off and she gets the one underneath my hand.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16OK, good. I'm going to go on to Charlie and Margot.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19Let's see how they're doing. Charlie, how we been doing?

0:14:19 > 0:14:22- Really well.- Are you surprised at how quickly she...?

0:14:22 > 0:14:24It's amazing how quickly she learned.

0:14:24 > 0:14:26The stages we learned it in were very good.

0:14:26 > 0:14:28Why have you had such quick success with her?

0:14:28 > 0:14:30Er, I guess it's probably her love of eating.

0:14:30 > 0:14:34All right, I'm going to move on to Anna and Alfie over here.

0:14:34 > 0:14:38Good work. Keep it up, man. I'm very proud of you. Looking good!

0:14:38 > 0:14:41Looking very good! I love it!

0:14:41 > 0:14:45No! It can't be! Anna and Alfie are doing a back stall!

0:14:45 > 0:14:47Good boy! Yes!

0:14:47 > 0:14:51Nearly there! Oh, good boy! Well done! Good boy!

0:14:51 > 0:14:54- Anna, how has Alfie been doing? - He's been doing OK.

0:14:54 > 0:14:56He's trying to work out what I'm asking him to do.

0:14:56 > 0:14:59We're making it easier for him to get on my back,

0:14:59 > 0:15:02so when he does it, then I can reward him in a large amount.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05I think that's fantastic. I want to see more if you don't mind.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07OK. Up! Up! Up!

0:15:07 > 0:15:10Look at this. Good.

0:15:10 > 0:15:13Wait a minute - no hands on the ground! Fantabulous!

0:15:13 > 0:15:17That's going to give you an advantage at show time.

0:15:17 > 0:15:22Right now, all of you have all fours on the ground like this

0:15:22 > 0:15:24and you have your dog jumping up.

0:15:24 > 0:15:28If, at show time, you can have your dog jump on your back

0:15:28 > 0:15:32and have your hands off the ground like this,

0:15:32 > 0:15:35you'll get double the points for each jump they pull off.

0:15:35 > 0:15:39- Does that make sense?- ALL:- Yes. - How do you feel about that, Rebecca?

0:15:39 > 0:15:43I'm feeling a bit nervous cos the dog's going to be on our back

0:15:43 > 0:15:46but our hands are off the ground, so it's a bit wobbly.

0:15:46 > 0:15:50It is harder. That's why you'll get more points. Let's practise.

0:15:50 > 0:15:51Let's do it.

0:15:54 > 0:15:57Now Charlie's doing a back stall too!

0:15:57 > 0:15:59Now get down. Lovely!

0:15:59 > 0:16:02Look how high Annie and Alfie's back stall is!

0:16:03 > 0:16:06Rebecca and Charlie have some competition.

0:16:06 > 0:16:08It looks good.

0:16:08 > 0:16:11Look how impressive that is. That's beautiful.

0:16:11 > 0:16:13Good boy! Well done!

0:16:13 > 0:16:14Come on, Rebecca.

0:16:14 > 0:16:18The standing back stall is much more fashionable these days!

0:16:18 > 0:16:20- Good, Rebecca.- Wait.

0:16:20 > 0:16:22This is nice.

0:16:22 > 0:16:24Wait.

0:16:24 > 0:16:25Wait.

0:16:25 > 0:16:27Stay.

0:16:30 > 0:16:32Wow!

0:16:32 > 0:16:34That is incredible.

0:16:34 > 0:16:37It's all happening. Everyone's doing it.

0:16:37 > 0:16:40It's a breakthrough. It's amazing.

0:16:40 > 0:16:42Only on Who Let The Dogs Out.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45Where else are you going to find a do training show like this?!

0:16:45 > 0:16:48I think we have a real competition on our hands right now.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50Showtime will be very interesting.

0:16:50 > 0:16:53You've got two weeks to practise with your dogs.

0:16:53 > 0:16:56Then you are going to come back here for showtime at the doghouse

0:16:56 > 0:16:59and we are going to see which dog takes the Top Dog Trophy.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02Good luck, keep practising. Goodbye.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04ALL: Bye!

0:17:08 > 0:17:11Here are Zak's six tips for the perfect back stall.

0:17:11 > 0:17:15Step one. Get your dog to jump on something steady like a box.

0:17:15 > 0:17:17Step two.

0:17:17 > 0:17:21Make sure your dog is comfortable jumping on and off the box.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24Step three. Test your dog on shakier ground

0:17:24 > 0:17:27by moving the box a little.

0:17:27 > 0:17:29Step four, on all fours, keep your back flat

0:17:29 > 0:17:32and get your dog jumping on and off it.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35Step five. Try doing this while standing

0:17:35 > 0:17:38for a cooler-looking back stall.

0:17:38 > 0:17:41Step six. Practise, practise, practise.

0:17:41 > 0:17:43You'll be a back stall expert in no time.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49Teaching your dog to lie down

0:17:49 > 0:17:52might not seem like the most glamorous thing,

0:17:52 > 0:17:56but it is essential if you ever hope to teach your dog

0:17:56 > 0:17:59amazing tricks like crawl or roll over or play dead.

0:17:59 > 0:18:02We have Nellie here and we are going to use food rewards.

0:18:02 > 0:18:06Come here, Nellie! Look what I got for you.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08Nice work. Sit. Wonderful job.

0:18:08 > 0:18:12Lie down is a really good exercise in lower training.

0:18:12 > 0:18:16What is lower trading? Lower training is a way to put your dog

0:18:16 > 0:18:19in almost any position you can imagine

0:18:19 > 0:18:23by coaxing them down with a treat. Good girl. Up here.

0:18:23 > 0:18:27I am just going to lower her down like this... Down.

0:18:27 > 0:18:32..and say down when she gets there to let her know what she is doing.

0:18:32 > 0:18:34Up. Nice.

0:18:34 > 0:18:38As they're starting to get that, they're starting to understand,

0:18:38 > 0:18:41you can start to phase that into a hand single.

0:18:41 > 0:18:44Down. That's looking wonderful.

0:18:44 > 0:18:47Eventually, you can phase it in

0:18:47 > 0:18:49without using a treat at all. Let's try.

0:18:49 > 0:18:52Come on, get up! Very good!. Stay! No treat.

0:18:52 > 0:18:57Down. Very good! I am going to give her a really good treat that time

0:18:57 > 0:19:00Always let your dog know when they're on the right track

0:19:00 > 0:19:04and give them lots of love. Every dog has to know how to lie down.

0:19:09 > 0:19:12There are over 3,000 police dogs in the UK alone.

0:19:12 > 0:19:14These dogs are so valuable that in some countries,

0:19:14 > 0:19:18they're given police badges and made sworn officers. It is no wonder.

0:19:18 > 0:19:23Here's a look at some of the world's most awesome crime-fighting canines.

0:19:26 > 0:19:32In London, the police air support unit are out in force.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35From the skies, they're looking for a criminal on the run.

0:19:35 > 0:19:38It's a huge area of houses and gardens to search.

0:19:38 > 0:19:43They could be hiding anywhere. But the police have two secret weapons.

0:19:43 > 0:19:48Heat-detecting infrared cameras and an army of sniffer dogs.

0:19:48 > 0:19:52This dog has come up trumps. They've found the wrongdoer.

0:19:52 > 0:19:55They bark to alert the police officer on the ground.

0:19:55 > 0:19:59The criminal was hidden from sight behind some tarpaulin. Sneaky.

0:19:59 > 0:20:01Without the dog's amazing sense of smell,

0:20:01 > 0:20:03he might never have been found.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06Thanks to the sniffer dog,

0:20:06 > 0:20:09the criminal was charged and sent to jail.

0:20:15 > 0:20:18Over to Australia where these dogs

0:20:18 > 0:20:22have the most unusual crime-fighting task in the world.

0:20:23 > 0:20:27They have to watch and guard something you would never expect.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30Penguins! They were promoted from their previous job

0:20:30 > 0:20:33of guarding free-range chickens on a farm.

0:20:33 > 0:20:37These penguins are endangered and fox attacks on their colony

0:20:37 > 0:20:41have reduced the population from 600 to just 10.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49Thanks to the amazing awareness of these dogs,

0:20:49 > 0:20:53penguin numbers have been rising. Success!

0:20:53 > 0:20:57The Australian government is now going to use these sheepdogs

0:20:57 > 0:21:01to protect other endangered marsupials close to extinction.

0:21:01 > 0:21:03Good work. No worries, mate.

0:21:07 > 0:21:12Two weeks of intense training have come to an end.

0:21:12 > 0:21:16This is the strangest competition

0:21:16 > 0:21:21Alfie, Petra, and Margot have ever faced.

0:21:21 > 0:21:23Only one of them will win.

0:21:26 > 0:21:30Rebecca and Petra were the first to do a back stall.

0:21:30 > 0:21:32They've been practising like crazy.

0:21:32 > 0:21:36But could Petra's size affect her speed?

0:21:36 > 0:21:40Training has gone really well. Petra is getting on my back very good now.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43Charlie and Margot have also been training hard.

0:21:43 > 0:21:48They've made lots of progress and sharpened up their act. Look at them!

0:21:51 > 0:21:54At the beginning, she did not know what I was talking about.

0:21:54 > 0:21:57But she is really good now and can jump on and off.

0:21:57 > 0:22:01But disaster has struck for Anna and Alfie.

0:22:01 > 0:22:03In the hours before showtime,

0:22:03 > 0:22:07Alfie seemed to get fed up doing the back stall.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10We saw him master it, showing challenge-winning potential.

0:22:10 > 0:22:12But today is a different story.

0:22:15 > 0:22:18Alfie hasn't been so keen on the back stall.

0:22:18 > 0:22:22He will do it once or twice and then lie down. He's not that keen.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27Will Alfie do the back stall or won't he?

0:22:27 > 0:22:31Can Anna and Alfie beat Rebecca and Petra, and Charlie and Margot?

0:22:32 > 0:22:34It's time to find out.

0:22:38 > 0:22:41First up, Rebecca and Petra.

0:22:41 > 0:22:44Check out Rebecca's stance!

0:22:44 > 0:22:47- Your minute starts now.- Up! Wait!

0:22:49 > 0:22:52No hands on the ground. Three seconds on the back.

0:22:52 > 0:22:55That's a two-point back stall. And that's another two-point.

0:22:55 > 0:22:59If her hands were on the ground, it would have been one point.

0:22:59 > 0:23:00Petra is enjoying this.

0:23:02 > 0:23:05What speed!

0:23:05 > 0:23:09It takes Petra one second to jump on and off again. Brilliant!

0:23:16 > 0:23:1830 seconds left.

0:23:18 > 0:23:19They need to act fast.

0:23:20 > 0:23:23That's another two-pointer.

0:23:28 > 0:23:29And another.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32Oh! Petra's a bit confused. Keep going.

0:23:32 > 0:23:35Nice recovery for two points.

0:23:37 > 0:23:40Quickly, Petra, time's running out.

0:23:44 > 0:23:46Two seconds on the clock.

0:23:46 > 0:23:48Time is up.

0:23:48 > 0:23:50Oh! She's not allowed that last one!

0:23:55 > 0:23:59Up next, Charlie and Margot. Your minute starts now.

0:23:59 > 0:24:02Charlie's starting on all fours.

0:24:02 > 0:24:05A bit risky. Watch out, Margo. Good catch, Charlie.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07Good landing.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12Margo is unaffected. That's it, Charlie, standing up, three seconds.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15That's a two-point back stall.

0:24:20 > 0:24:23Charlie's found his flow and this is fast. Very fast.

0:24:26 > 0:24:29That's another two-pointer!

0:24:35 > 0:24:36And another!

0:24:36 > 0:24:3930 seconds left. This is going to be close.

0:24:39 > 0:24:40Margot, keep going.

0:24:47 > 0:24:50That's brilliant from Charlie!

0:24:53 > 0:24:56Classic back stalls here. Two more points.

0:24:56 > 0:24:58Margot's having fun up there.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03Margot, six seconds left, get on his back.

0:25:05 > 0:25:07Oh, no! Margot slipped up at the crucial moment.

0:25:07 > 0:25:10Very good. That was impressive.

0:25:14 > 0:25:20The moment has arrived, Anna and Alfie's back stall showtime.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22Will they, or won't they?

0:25:22 > 0:25:24Up! Up!

0:25:26 > 0:25:29Come on! Alfie, up!

0:25:30 > 0:25:33It's not looking good for Anna and Alfie. She's lifting him.

0:25:33 > 0:25:36The rules state that Alfie has had to jump on unaided.

0:25:36 > 0:25:40She knows this and so it's no points for this back stall.

0:25:40 > 0:25:42But she is trying hard.

0:25:44 > 0:25:47ANNA SHOUTS ENCOURAGEMENT

0:25:47 > 0:25:50Again, Alfie's not interested, so Anna is picking him up.

0:25:50 > 0:25:53No points, but Anna is not giving up.

0:25:57 > 0:25:59This is a nightmare for Anna.

0:25:59 > 0:26:0330 seconds left and Alfie just wants treats.

0:26:03 > 0:26:07Anna is still showing fantastic enthusiasm though.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11And Anna keeps on going.

0:26:13 > 0:26:15Good boy! Well done! Let's go!

0:26:17 > 0:26:19Let's go!

0:26:19 > 0:26:23Alfie, you have mere seconds left. Concentrate!

0:26:23 > 0:26:26Good for you, Anna, showing real fighting spirit there.

0:26:26 > 0:26:28Stay.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31Time is up. Very good job.

0:26:31 > 0:26:33Talk about heart, you stuck with it.

0:26:33 > 0:26:35I like that.

0:26:39 > 0:26:41You guys did excellent.

0:26:41 > 0:26:45Anna and Alfie, you had a bit of trouble getting Alfie on your back,

0:26:45 > 0:26:49but your attitude towards this whole thing should be commended.

0:26:49 > 0:26:52Rebecca and Petra, not too bad.

0:26:52 > 0:26:55I liked your strategy today. You were really good.

0:26:55 > 0:26:58You assumed one position in order to maximise the jumps.

0:26:58 > 0:27:03An interesting choice. We will see if it helped you or not.

0:27:03 > 0:27:06Charlie and Margot, you guys were on fire.

0:27:06 > 0:27:09That was pretty dramatic.

0:27:09 > 0:27:14However, I can now reveal, with a massive score of 20,

0:27:14 > 0:27:19the winner of today's Who Let The Dogs Out Top Dog Trophy is...

0:27:29 > 0:27:32- Thank you.- How do you feel?

0:27:32 > 0:27:35- Amazing.- Yeah?- But I think we all did really well.

0:27:35 > 0:27:38Yes, I wish I could give all of you a trophy.

0:27:38 > 0:27:41You really did a great job.

0:27:41 > 0:27:45That's all for today. We'll see you next time on Who Let The Dogs Out.

0:27:45 > 0:27:48Good dog!

0:27:51 > 0:27:53I think we did really well.

0:27:53 > 0:27:56I wasn't about the success, more about the relationship.

0:27:56 > 0:27:58We were quite fast and it was quite fluent.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01But Rebecca and Petra are really amazing.

0:28:01 > 0:28:07It feels amazing to be top dog, but I think we all deserve it.

0:28:07 > 0:28:09Howey! I'm top dog!
