0:01:40 > 0:01:44there can only be one Top Dog Trainer of the entire series.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47That means that the competition at the try-outs was tough,

0:01:47 > 0:01:49with everyone desperate to get to the Dog House

0:01:49 > 0:01:51to get their hands on that trophy.

0:01:51 > 0:01:55Charlotte and her dog, Whispa, were the first to secure

0:01:55 > 0:01:56a place for today's challenge.

0:01:56 > 0:02:00I'm Charlotte and my dog is called Whispa, and we're from Warwickshire.

0:02:00 > 0:02:01OK, show me what you got.

0:02:01 > 0:02:02Up.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05'I like doing competitions with Whispa.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07'And I'm a little bit nervous'

0:02:07 > 0:02:08about meeting Zak.

0:02:08 > 0:02:12- Stay. Good girl.- Very nice.

0:02:12 > 0:02:16'I think Whispa would be really good because she's got'

0:02:16 > 0:02:18quite a competitive streak in her.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21Whoa, whoa, she did it!

0:02:21 > 0:02:23Let her know! That was amazing!

0:02:23 > 0:02:25Charlotte and Whispa were great.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27In order to really do well at the Dog House,

0:02:27 > 0:02:30you've got to get it. They do.

0:02:32 > 0:02:36'Hi, I'm Angelina and this is my dog, Jess, and we're from Devon.'

0:02:36 > 0:02:39I'm really excited because my dog, Jess, is with me.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42And I'm not nervous because she is really good.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44That's good, look at that! Yeah!

0:02:44 > 0:02:47Jess loves riding on the back of my horse with me

0:02:47 > 0:02:50because we spent time together, and she loves it.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52Don't get me excited, this would be incredible.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54- Back. Jess, go back.- Take your time.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56Jess makes me really proud all the time

0:02:56 > 0:03:00because she does all of her tricks really good. She never lets me down.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02See if you can get her interested in that.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05I just wanted to see if she would play with a beach ball,

0:03:05 > 0:03:07you've got her balancing on it. Look at that!

0:03:07 > 0:03:08Really, really good.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10And she is a very humble dog trainer.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12She is sincere. Those are my favourite qualities about her.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14They could do very well.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18Most trainers brought one dog to the try-outs,

0:03:18 > 0:03:22but not Rosie - she doubled her chances by bringing two dogs!

0:03:22 > 0:03:25My name is Rosie and this is Dusty and this is Honey.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28But it was Honey who made it through to the Dog House.

0:03:32 > 0:03:33Very good, very good, OK.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35My try-out went quite good.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39With Honey, she was a bit wary of Zak,

0:03:39 > 0:03:41- cos she doesn't really like boys. - I move away, she's comfortable.

0:03:41 > 0:03:45If I get into the Dog House, I would be really happy

0:03:45 > 0:03:47because I wanted to get there.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50I like your energy a lot. Very good.

0:03:50 > 0:03:51Good girl.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54Rosie did a really good job out here - a very good trainer,

0:03:54 > 0:03:55a really well-trained dog.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58Let's hope that keeps up.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04The three trainers impressed Zak so much

0:04:04 > 0:04:07that he has invited them to the Dog House to teach them

0:04:07 > 0:04:09one of his trickiest stunts yet.

0:04:09 > 0:04:14They will need poise and control to master this challenge!

0:04:14 > 0:04:17How are you guys doing today? Are we excited about today?

0:04:17 > 0:04:18BOTH: Yeah. Well, guess what?

0:04:18 > 0:04:26Today you are going to be teaching your dog how to balance on a barrel.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29For this trick, your dogs will have to jump onto a barrel

0:04:29 > 0:04:33and not only balance there, but travel forwards or backwards.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36At showtime, the winner will be the dog that travels ten metres

0:04:36 > 0:04:37the quickest.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43Now, Angelina and Jess, you're smiling over there,

0:04:43 > 0:04:46and I know exactly why. The last time I saw you,

0:04:46 > 0:04:49you were working on already teaching this trick. Have you continued?

0:04:49 > 0:04:53- Yeah.- Oh, boy. Guys, we've got a lot of work to do.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Are you ready to get into training? BOTH: Yeah.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58What I want you to do is I want you to put the barrel right here

0:04:58 > 0:05:00in the base that we have.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02Do you see this? What this does

0:05:02 > 0:05:04is this keeps it very secure so our dogs

0:05:04 > 0:05:06don't get scared when it moves around.

0:05:06 > 0:05:10Now, what is she doing?

0:05:10 > 0:05:12Guys, check this out. We haven't even started training yet

0:05:12 > 0:05:14and she's on it.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18We've got a lot of work to do. Now, Charlotte and Whispa,

0:05:18 > 0:05:19I want to start with you guys.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22We want to encourage her to get up here. You can see we gave this

0:05:22 > 0:05:24some traction to make this a bit easier for Whispa.

0:05:24 > 0:05:25Ooh, that is clever.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28It'll stop the dogs from slipping off the barrel.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31We want to encourage her to just stay up there. We're not going to move it.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34We want her to be really comfortable. Let's start to do that. Look!

0:05:34 > 0:05:37- Very good. Now give a stay.- Stay. - Now show me some genuine,

0:05:37 > 0:05:40- real appreciation for Whispa right now.- Good girl!- Good.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43Whispa is doing well, but the barrel seems just a bit

0:05:43 > 0:05:44too small for her.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47Very nice. Look at her tail wagging. I'm going to go on

0:05:47 > 0:05:48- to Rosie and Honey right now, OK?- OK.

0:05:48 > 0:05:52- Very good. All right, Rosie, how are we doing?- Fine.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55- Let's encourage Honey to get up here. - Up.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59Honey's barrel is certainly not too small for her!

0:05:59 > 0:06:01Is it OK if I move this a bit? Now, give a very clear stay there.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05- Stay.- And signal a stay, good. - Stay.- And now...

0:06:05 > 0:06:07Very good. Now,

0:06:07 > 0:06:09reward that, let her know. It's that timing, remember.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12The second I move that and she's OK with it.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15It's awesome, I love that, thank you very much.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17Continue working on that.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20I'm going to come over here to Angelina and Jess now, all right?

0:06:20 > 0:06:21- How are you doing? - Fine, thank you.

0:06:21 > 0:06:23I've been glancing over here at you

0:06:23 > 0:06:28and you have the most confident smile on your face right now.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31I know Jess is a little bit further ahead in this. OK,

0:06:31 > 0:06:33so, we've got her here, she's on the barrel.

0:06:33 > 0:06:36I think we're ready to take the base away right now.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39Angelina and Jess have already been practising this trick at home.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42I wonder how far they got with their training.

0:06:42 > 0:06:44Whoa, look at this!

0:06:44 > 0:06:48Lean back. Lean back, Jess. Listen, back. Back, back.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50- Look at these guys.- What?

0:06:50 > 0:06:52Angelina and Jess can already do it!

0:06:52 > 0:06:55- Good girl, you did it! - Now, when you do this,

0:06:55 > 0:06:57are you having to walk away from her

0:06:57 > 0:06:58or do you still have to stay with her?

0:06:58 > 0:07:00Well, we're still staying with her

0:07:00 > 0:07:03for a minute to make sure she doesn't lose her confidence.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05OK, very good. I want you guys to continue to work on this.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08Doing very, very well. I'll come back over here to Charlotte and Whispa,

0:07:08 > 0:07:12see how they're doing. We're going to go to the next level with them now.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15It's time to see how Whispa gets on with a moving barrel.

0:07:15 > 0:07:17But because Whispa is bigger than the other dogs,

0:07:17 > 0:07:21she would be more comfortable on a larger barrel. Luckily,

0:07:21 > 0:07:23- Zak has one for her. - If she so much

0:07:23 > 0:07:28as thinks about taking a step, you're going to be there instantly

0:07:28 > 0:07:33- to let her know, "Yes, I love that behaviour out of you."- Yeah.

0:07:33 > 0:07:35Whispa, on. Come on, on.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37You can do it, Whispa.

0:07:37 > 0:07:38Let her know that you like this.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40- Nice and genuine.- Good girl!

0:07:40 > 0:07:42Now, I'm going to go this way a little bit. Watch her feet!

0:07:42 > 0:07:45I want to see you praise her.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47Yes! Good girl!

0:07:47 > 0:07:49That was it! Very good. And she can get down.

0:07:49 > 0:07:51We don't want to ask for too much too early, you know?

0:07:51 > 0:07:54I want to see you do this, but I want to see you hold the barrel

0:07:54 > 0:07:55- and encourage her to get up here. - Yeah.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58- It moves... Feel how easily. - On.- Yeah, there you go.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01- Good. Look at her, look at the legs moving.- Stay.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04All right, I'm going to go over here to Rosie and Honey.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07Now it's Honey's turn to try walking on a wobbly barrel!

0:08:07 > 0:08:11And same thing. Let's go ahead and encourage Honey to get up

0:08:11 > 0:08:13- on the barrel.- Honey, up.

0:08:13 > 0:08:18- Very good. Now, you heard everything I was saying back there, right?- Yeah.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21I'm going to move the barrel slightly. Right there, go ahead.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23Did you see that tiny step with the front legs?

0:08:23 > 0:08:26Walking on a wobbly barrel certainly looks very difficult!

0:08:26 > 0:08:28I want to see more sincere energy out of you.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31- OK.- And I know she's a chill dog,

0:08:31 > 0:08:33but let her know better, show me better communication.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36Continue working. You were doing terrific.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39- Coming back to Angelina over here. - And back.

0:08:39 > 0:08:43- Back.- The others certainly have a lot of catching up to do.

0:08:43 > 0:08:44And back. Good girl, Jess.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46You are good!

0:08:46 > 0:08:49- Are you after my job? - She just loves doing her tricks.

0:08:49 > 0:08:51You know, you hit the nail on the head there.

0:08:51 > 0:08:55- That's why you're successful. - Good girl!- Very nice.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58The most important thing for this stunt is to take baby steps.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01If you want to accomplish anything meaningful or amazing,

0:09:01 > 0:09:04you've got to celebrate those small victories.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06Keep up the good work.

0:09:09 > 0:09:13While those guys are hard at work training, I'm going to watch

0:09:13 > 0:09:17some privileged dogs who really do enjoy the finer things in life.

0:09:19 > 0:09:24For some extremely posh dogs, only the best will do -

0:09:24 > 0:09:27the finest foods,

0:09:27 > 0:09:29the latest beauty treatments...

0:09:31 > 0:09:34..and, of course, first-class travel at all times.

0:09:37 > 0:09:41Working for a posh dog can be really humiliating.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45Posh dogs are often mean to their staff.

0:09:48 > 0:09:52Being posh often means being a little eccentric.

0:09:57 > 0:10:01But when you are posh, frankly, who cares?

0:10:05 > 0:10:09Still to come, Zak teaches Nelly a new trick

0:10:09 > 0:10:13and the teams set themselves up for a balancing bonanza.

0:10:13 > 0:10:17The winner of today's barrel-balancing challenge is...

0:10:21 > 0:10:25Back in the Dog House garden, the girls are busy with their dogs

0:10:25 > 0:10:26and barrels.

0:10:26 > 0:10:29You guys, you are just... Wow!

0:10:29 > 0:10:31You are just blowing my mind right now!

0:10:31 > 0:10:33You're doing incredible with this.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35Although Angelina and Jess have already mastered

0:10:35 > 0:10:38walking on the barrel, there is always room for improvement.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41I think I might be able to make it to the final.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45And I really would like it cos Jess really deserves it.

0:10:45 > 0:10:47She's the best dog to me.

0:10:47 > 0:10:49And if she was a celebrity,

0:10:49 > 0:10:53I'd say she's Mary Poppins cos she's practically perfect in every way.

0:10:53 > 0:10:57- Good, good. Yes!- Good girl! - Very nice.

0:10:57 > 0:10:59Whispa is still very unsteady on the barrel

0:10:59 > 0:11:02and Charlotte is having to give her a lot of support for every step.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04I'm feeling a little bit nervous

0:11:04 > 0:11:07and I think I'll have to work on it a lot,

0:11:07 > 0:11:10but I really hope I can make it through to the final

0:11:10 > 0:11:15because I think Whispa's really good at training and learning new tricks.

0:11:15 > 0:11:19- Come on.- Very good! Now, if she so much as thinks about making a step,

0:11:19 > 0:11:22you're going to let her know that you love that behaviour

0:11:22 > 0:11:24your own special way.

0:11:24 > 0:11:28Rosie seems to have no trouble getting Honey onto the barrel,

0:11:28 > 0:11:32but getting Honey to stay up there is proving much more difficult.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34Our training's been going quite well,

0:11:34 > 0:11:37but Honey keeps jumping off the barrel and going back on.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40I don't think she gets the idea what she's meant to be doing.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43Hey! You keep falling, don't you?

0:11:43 > 0:11:46All right, guys, you have one week to practise.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48I wish you the best of luck and we'll see you then.

0:11:48 > 0:11:49Keep training!

0:11:49 > 0:11:50- Bye!- Bye!- Bye.

0:11:50 > 0:11:56I think I'll just try and do lots of little-and-often training.

0:11:56 > 0:12:00I'll practise, like, all that I can in all my spare time with Whispa.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02I hope that it will be enough.

0:12:02 > 0:12:07They found the tricks a bit hard, but I think she can do it.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10And I feel really confident about it.

0:12:10 > 0:12:16The best part was when he started training. Jess was ahead.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19And the worst bit was when I have to compete against the friends

0:12:19 > 0:12:20I've made.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23Whispa, Jess and Honey are all very different dogs, but let's take a look

0:12:23 > 0:12:27at their mutt measurements and see what makes them tick.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30Whispa is an English cocker spaniel

0:12:30 > 0:12:33and her favourite nibbles are cheese and sausages.

0:12:33 > 0:12:35English cocker spaniels are usually very active,

0:12:35 > 0:12:36and Whispa is no exception.

0:12:36 > 0:12:40She loves to play tennis and bat the ball with her paw.

0:12:40 > 0:12:45But will Whispa put her paws to good use to steady herself on a barrel?

0:12:45 > 0:12:48Next up is Jess, the Jack Russell, whose favourite hobby

0:12:48 > 0:12:51is to ride a pony and do tricks on its back. Amazing!

0:12:51 > 0:12:55She also likes to skip with Angelina and have fun on the garden slide.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58Jack Russells tend to be athletic and fearless,

0:12:58 > 0:13:01so will Angelina and Jess use this to their advantage?

0:13:01 > 0:13:05Honey is a Jack Russell-Chihuahua cross who loves nothing more

0:13:05 > 0:13:08than being stroked and given titbits.

0:13:08 > 0:13:09She competes in agility

0:13:09 > 0:13:11and apparently can balance

0:13:11 > 0:13:13on a giant, wobbly, pink cushion,

0:13:13 > 0:13:16but will that help her to balance on a barrel that is twice

0:13:16 > 0:13:18the size of her?

0:13:25 > 0:13:27One week on and with a place in the quarterfinals at stake,

0:13:27 > 0:13:29our teams are pulling out

0:13:29 > 0:13:31all the stops to be the best barrel balancer!

0:13:33 > 0:13:36You guys are looking unbelievable here!

0:13:36 > 0:13:39Every one of your dogs is on the barrel, they all seem really,

0:13:39 > 0:13:40really comfortable up there.

0:13:40 > 0:13:42Why don't you guys continue to practise?

0:13:42 > 0:13:44I'd like to work with you, Angelina,

0:13:44 > 0:13:46and Jess and see how you guys are doing.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49Angelina and Jess have been ahead from the start,

0:13:49 > 0:13:52how much progress have they made since we last saw them?

0:13:52 > 0:13:53Back, back...

0:13:53 > 0:13:56Oh, wow! Jess looks like she could easily cover ten metres.

0:13:56 > 0:14:00- And back, back...- Beautiful control! - Good girl!

0:14:00 > 0:14:02Ten out of ten for the class favourites!

0:14:02 > 0:14:03Let's try something.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06Try picking up your energy a little bit. Let's see if you can get Jess

0:14:06 > 0:14:08a little more excited.

0:14:08 > 0:14:10Try and get a little happier, a little more energetic.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13- Yes, like that. And let's see what happens.- And back. Good girl.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16- And back. Good girl.- That's it. - And back.- That's very nice.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19Now it looks like you're going a bit faster, doesn't it?

0:14:19 > 0:14:23Very good. Go ahead and reward big right there. That's good.

0:14:23 > 0:14:25My biggest advice to you is if you pick up your energy a bit,

0:14:25 > 0:14:27I think that'll take you to the next level.

0:14:27 > 0:14:29Because you're better than last time.

0:14:29 > 0:14:31I love the kiss right there that you gave Jess.

0:14:31 > 0:14:33Rosie and Honey, come back over here.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36- Show me your progress here. Show me how things have been going.- Come on!

0:14:36 > 0:14:39Honey's quickly and confidently onto that barrel.

0:14:39 > 0:14:41But - oh! - she's quickly and confidently off it again.

0:14:41 > 0:14:44- How far has she gone?- She has gone one-and-a-half metres so far.

0:14:44 > 0:14:46Show me again, please.

0:14:46 > 0:14:50That is a good start but ten metres at showtime is a long way,

0:14:50 > 0:14:51and time is running out.

0:14:51 > 0:14:55Yeah, if you could actually come over here. I don't know, would this work,

0:14:55 > 0:14:57- for you to change your position a bit?- Honey.

0:14:57 > 0:15:00Just try. Very good. Very good!

0:15:00 > 0:15:02Oh, this is good. She's staying up there longer.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05Good. Reward her big. Right there. We saw that she was about to fall,

0:15:05 > 0:15:07so we want to encourage her to balance up there.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09And you can lure her with a treat,

0:15:09 > 0:15:12- but you can also have that authentic connection with her, as well.- OK.

0:15:12 > 0:15:14- Make sense?- Yeah.- OK, Rosie.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17I'm going to let you guys go practise over here. I'm going to bring in

0:15:17 > 0:15:19Charlotte and Whispa. Come on over.

0:15:20 > 0:15:24- Whispa!- Very good. How are you guys doing?- Really well.- Wonderful!

0:15:24 > 0:15:25Go ahead and show me where you are.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28Whispa, on. Whispa, steady.

0:15:28 > 0:15:30Whispa is going a bit too fast.

0:15:30 > 0:15:31Oh, and she's off.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34- Good girl!- Now, I do want to give you some advice here,

0:15:34 > 0:15:37because I notice that Whispa keeps coming off the barrel.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40Let's work on that right now. I want you to slow Whispa down, actually.

0:15:40 > 0:15:41Very good. Now, encourage slowly,

0:15:41 > 0:15:44because right now Whispa is just on autopilot,

0:15:44 > 0:15:47- which sometimes is good. - Come on, steady.- Slow it down.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49- Oh!- Steady.

0:15:49 > 0:15:53- Steady.- Pretty good. If Whispa continues down this path,

0:15:53 > 0:15:55I worry that she's going to get just too into it

0:15:55 > 0:15:58and then she'll keep falling off the barrel, you know what I mean?

0:15:58 > 0:16:02So, it's better to go steady than it is to go super fast. OK.

0:16:02 > 0:16:05Hey, guys, I have full faith in all of you. I'm really impressed

0:16:05 > 0:16:08with you. Keep up the good work, guys, and I'll see you right here,

0:16:08 > 0:16:12- at the Dog House, for showtime, all right? Bye, guys!- Bye!

0:16:12 > 0:16:16The teams have had all the training they are going to get.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19They have one week to perfect their barrel balancing skills

0:16:19 > 0:16:20before showtime.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23With only one quarterfinal spot up for grabs,

0:16:23 > 0:16:24the pressure is on!

0:16:24 > 0:16:28The hardest bit in our training has been making her stay on the barrel.

0:16:28 > 0:16:33I might be in with a good chance if Honey has a lighter barrel

0:16:33 > 0:16:36and she can push it a little bit more.

0:16:36 > 0:16:39I'm going to go like this to help Jess - "Come on! Good girl!

0:16:39 > 0:16:41"Back, back. Good girl."

0:16:41 > 0:16:45Cos it'll make her go a little bit faster so she will enjoy it more,

0:16:45 > 0:16:48and we might be able to get through to the next round.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50I think my training session today went really well

0:16:50 > 0:16:54because now I've got some tips so I know what I need to practise.

0:16:54 > 0:17:00I need to take it back a step and just do it much more slowly.

0:17:00 > 0:17:03Balancing on a barrel is a tricky business and requires

0:17:03 > 0:17:04a lot of training.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07Here are Zak's five steps on how to do it -

0:17:07 > 0:17:12one - encourage your dog to jump onto and stand on a stable barrel,

0:17:12 > 0:17:14two - once your dog is comfortable staying there,

0:17:14 > 0:17:18begin to move the barrel very slightly using your hands,

0:17:18 > 0:17:22three - reward your dog for each bit of progress, but only reward

0:17:22 > 0:17:25and give positive praise when your dog is on the barrel

0:17:25 > 0:17:28to encourage them to want to stay there,

0:17:28 > 0:17:31four - once your dog is comfortable with the barrel moving,

0:17:31 > 0:17:34gradually increase the speed that the barrel moves,

0:17:34 > 0:17:37so you and your dog start to travel some distance,

0:17:37 > 0:17:41five - once your dog has got the hang of it, leave a small gap

0:17:41 > 0:17:44between you and your dog so they learn to balance and travel distance

0:17:44 > 0:17:47on the barrel with your commands only.

0:17:51 > 0:17:53Teaching your dog a trick is fun

0:17:53 > 0:17:55and it makes their quality of life better,

0:17:55 > 0:17:57and that's what having a dog is all about.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59Now, today, I've got Nelly and I'm going to show you

0:17:59 > 0:18:01how to teach your dog to wave.

0:18:01 > 0:18:02Come on in, Nelly!

0:18:04 > 0:18:06Oh, I've got some good treats for you.

0:18:06 > 0:18:09Now, Nelly already knows sit, we're off to a good start here.

0:18:09 > 0:18:11Now, it's best... Look, that's very good.

0:18:11 > 0:18:14It's best if your dog already knows how to shake hands or give you paw,

0:18:14 > 0:18:16or whatever you want to call it.

0:18:16 > 0:18:18That's fantastic, good girl.

0:18:18 > 0:18:21So, once our dog is shaking hands like this, we want to encourage them

0:18:21 > 0:18:23to stay with it. So, watch what I do here.

0:18:23 > 0:18:25May I have your paw, please?

0:18:25 > 0:18:27Very good. Stay.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30Yes. That was good, that was close. Good.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33She's ambidextrous, did you see? That's both paws.

0:18:33 > 0:18:36Stay. Almost. Wait, yes! Good girl.

0:18:36 > 0:18:39Did you see how she inadvertently held her paw up

0:18:39 > 0:18:40for a bit longer there?

0:18:40 > 0:18:42I want her to know I like that. I give her a treat.

0:18:42 > 0:18:44Let's see if we can get it looking real pretty here.

0:18:44 > 0:18:46Nelly, stay. Wave.

0:18:46 > 0:18:49Yes! Good girl!

0:18:49 > 0:18:51And now maybe if I stand up, she might actually

0:18:51 > 0:18:53do it from here. Hey, Nelly, will you wave?

0:18:53 > 0:18:58That was fantastic! Nelly, you are an amazing girl.

0:19:01 > 0:19:06After a hard day of training, some dogs just like to put their paws up

0:19:06 > 0:19:08and relax in front of the TV.

0:19:12 > 0:19:16This is Escondido Dog Home in California where the staff

0:19:16 > 0:19:19have installed some interesting technology -

0:19:19 > 0:19:21Dog TV.

0:19:21 > 0:19:23That's TV just for dogs.

0:19:23 > 0:19:25With TV fitted,

0:19:25 > 0:19:30the pooches are able to spend some quality time in front of the box.

0:19:30 > 0:19:33So, what's on? There's relaxation.

0:19:33 > 0:19:36Too relaxing? What's on the other side?

0:19:36 > 0:19:38Great, wrestling! Not impressed?

0:19:38 > 0:19:42What about doggy soaps? Ignore the baby, it is all about the dog!

0:19:45 > 0:19:47Even the staff love it!

0:19:47 > 0:19:51And apparently, all this relaxation can help the dogs find a new home

0:19:51 > 0:19:53because they're happier and more calm

0:19:53 > 0:19:55when visitors come in to see them.

0:19:55 > 0:19:57So, thanks to the telly,

0:19:57 > 0:20:00the Escondido dogs could soon be running free!

0:20:05 > 0:20:0916 days of intensive training are over.

0:20:09 > 0:20:12It's time for our three trainers to go head-to-head for a place

0:20:12 > 0:20:14in the quarterfinals.

0:20:16 > 0:20:20For two of the teams, the competition ends here.

0:20:20 > 0:20:22I'm quite confident, but the thing is,

0:20:22 > 0:20:25if the other dogs deserve it, then they deserve it.

0:20:25 > 0:20:27But we're going to try our hardest.

0:20:27 > 0:20:29So, who will keep their balance?

0:20:29 > 0:20:32I'm feeling a bit nervous because everybody is doing a bit better

0:20:32 > 0:20:35than me, because they can go farther,

0:20:35 > 0:20:38but Honey can't go as far on the barrel.

0:20:38 > 0:20:40Who will wobble under the pressure?

0:20:40 > 0:20:43I've really enjoyed getting this far and I just love

0:20:43 > 0:20:46spending time with Whispa and teaching her new tricks.

0:20:46 > 0:20:49I just really hope Whispa does her best,

0:20:49 > 0:20:51and that's all I can ask of her.

0:20:51 > 0:20:52It is time to find out.

0:20:52 > 0:20:56It is showtime for our barrel-balancing dogs!

0:20:56 > 0:21:00One by one they will get on their barrels and start rolling their way

0:21:00 > 0:21:01down the course.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04The dog that travels ten metres in the fastest time

0:21:04 > 0:21:07will be one step closer to winning this -

0:21:07 > 0:21:11the very first Who Let The Dogs Out? Top Dog Trainer trophy.

0:21:11 > 0:21:14First up, we have Rosie and Honey.

0:21:16 > 0:21:19Last time we saw Rosie and Honey, they were struggling in training

0:21:19 > 0:21:21and could barely reach 1.5 metres.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24They now have a smaller, lighter barrel to help them face

0:21:24 > 0:21:26the daunting ten-metre course.

0:21:26 > 0:21:30This could be the biggest challenge this team have ever faced!

0:21:30 > 0:21:33Rosie and Honey, whenever you're ready.

0:21:33 > 0:21:35Good girl. Oops!

0:21:35 > 0:21:37Oh, a big wobble!

0:21:37 > 0:21:40That is going to knock Honey's confidence.

0:21:40 > 0:21:42but Rosie is remaining positive

0:21:42 > 0:21:45and gets her straight back on that barrel.

0:21:47 > 0:21:50Oh! Honey really looks unsteady on that barrel.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55But her tail is wagging, so she's still up for the challenge.

0:22:02 > 0:22:06She is off the barrel again, but is keen to get back on there -

0:22:06 > 0:22:08good girl!

0:22:08 > 0:22:12Rosie is remaining terrifically calm and taking it all in her stride.

0:22:14 > 0:22:17Oh, but something is wrong, Honey has stopped wagging her tail

0:22:17 > 0:22:20and she does not want her treat!

0:22:22 > 0:22:24What is Rosie going to do?!

0:22:26 > 0:22:28I think we'll leave it at that, thank you.

0:22:28 > 0:22:30Very nice, very good work.

0:22:30 > 0:22:32And why did you decide to stop there?

0:22:32 > 0:22:35Because Honey was scared and she didn't want to do it any more.

0:22:35 > 0:22:37Yeah, so you made the call.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40She's not into this, I won't make her do anything she doesn't want to.

0:22:40 > 0:22:42Really good call. Nice work. Good job, guys.

0:22:42 > 0:22:45Great effort and a brave decision made by Rosie,

0:22:45 > 0:22:49she was right to put her dog's feelings before the competition,

0:22:49 > 0:22:52but they won't score anything for that attempt.

0:22:52 > 0:22:55Next up, Angelina and Jess.

0:22:56 > 0:22:59Angelina and Jess were already practising this trick

0:22:59 > 0:23:01before they arrived at the Dog House

0:23:01 > 0:23:04and have gone from strength to strength during their training.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07They are bound to be going through to the quarterfinals.

0:23:07 > 0:23:09Angelina and Jess, whenever you're ready.

0:23:09 > 0:23:11On the ball, Jessie.

0:23:11 > 0:23:13And they are off!

0:23:13 > 0:23:15And back. Good girl!

0:23:15 > 0:23:17And back! Good girl. And back! Good girl.

0:23:17 > 0:23:21Listen to the enthusiasm in Angelina's voice!

0:23:21 > 0:23:24Wow, look at those twinkle toes go!

0:23:24 > 0:23:26Jess has not put a paw out of place!

0:23:26 > 0:23:28Come on! Good girl. Back! Good girl.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31Come on, Jessie! Good girl! Come on! Come on, Jess!

0:23:31 > 0:23:35Yes, you can! Come on, Jess! Good girl. Good girl!

0:23:35 > 0:23:38Fantastic! Really, really good.

0:23:38 > 0:23:42Surely that is an unbeatable time from Angelina and Jess!

0:23:42 > 0:23:4518 seconds - unbelievable!

0:23:46 > 0:23:49Next up, Charlotte and Whispa.

0:23:49 > 0:23:51This team have come a long way in their training,

0:23:51 > 0:23:53but when we last saw them,

0:23:53 > 0:23:56Charlotte was finding it difficult to control Whispa's speed

0:23:56 > 0:23:58on the barrel, causing her to fall off.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01This could have a serious impact on their time.

0:24:01 > 0:24:03Charlotte and Whispa, whenever you're ready.

0:24:03 > 0:24:05Whispa, on. Good girl. Steady.

0:24:05 > 0:24:06And they're off!

0:24:06 > 0:24:09Steady, steady! Good girl. Steady, steady, steady.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12A strong start and they have definitely slowed down,

0:24:12 > 0:24:15but a bit too much. Is she going to fall off?

0:24:15 > 0:24:18Steady, steady, steady.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21Oh! But she stayed on. Great composure from Whispa.

0:24:21 > 0:24:25That is it Charlotte, keep Whispa moving on that barrel.

0:24:25 > 0:24:27Steady, steady, steady.

0:24:27 > 0:24:28Steady.

0:24:28 > 0:24:32This is turning out to be a steady and solid performance.

0:24:32 > 0:24:36- Steady. Steady, steady, steady.- Wow!

0:24:36 > 0:24:38Good girl!

0:24:38 > 0:24:40A fantastic display by Charlotte and Whispa.

0:24:40 > 0:24:44Their hard work of keeping Whispa on the barrel has paid off.

0:24:44 > 0:24:48But they were a full eight seconds slower than Angelina and Jess.

0:24:48 > 0:24:51Each of the teams has another attempt, but can anyone hope

0:24:51 > 0:24:53to beat Angelina and Jess?

0:24:54 > 0:24:57Back for more, it's Rosie and Honey.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00And on this attempt, they're determined not to give up.

0:25:03 > 0:25:06It takes them more than three minutes,

0:25:06 > 0:25:07but after a monumental effort

0:25:07 > 0:25:10they are finally approaching the ten-metre finish!

0:25:10 > 0:25:11Oopsies!

0:25:11 > 0:25:13Honey!

0:25:14 > 0:25:17Up, up! Good girl. Go on.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20Wow, they did it!

0:25:20 > 0:25:21Nice work!

0:25:21 > 0:25:23It took them three minutes and 23 seconds,

0:25:23 > 0:25:27but Rosie and Honey showed that barrel who was the boss!

0:25:27 > 0:25:30So, back in the driving seat, it's Angelina and Jess.

0:25:30 > 0:25:33Good girl. And back, back. Good girl. And back.

0:25:33 > 0:25:35Look at the speed of this pair!

0:25:35 > 0:25:38They are steamrolling their way across that course.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41Good girl! Come on! Come on, Jess! Come on! Come on, Jess!

0:25:41 > 0:25:42Come on! Good girl!

0:25:42 > 0:25:45Come on! Good girl. Come on! Good girl. Come on!

0:25:45 > 0:25:48Barrel-balancing supremos to the very end!

0:25:48 > 0:25:50Good girl!

0:25:50 > 0:25:53Amazing! They knocked a whole second off their previous time

0:25:53 > 0:25:56and have done it in 17 seconds!

0:25:56 > 0:26:00Surely that is enough to get them through to the next round.

0:26:00 > 0:26:03It is now or never for Charlotte and Whispa!

0:26:03 > 0:26:05Steady. Whispa, steady.

0:26:05 > 0:26:08They were nine seconds slower than Angelina and Jess last time.

0:26:08 > 0:26:10Come on, you pair!

0:26:10 > 0:26:14Wow, look at the pace of Whispa! They are really whizzing along!

0:26:14 > 0:26:16Steady, steady.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18Steady, steady. Steady.

0:26:18 > 0:26:22Wow, that was fast! But was it fast enough?

0:26:26 > 0:26:31I want you guys to know that all of you did wonderful.
